US-led coalition launches 39 airstrikes on ISIS in Syria, Iraq The US-led coalition forces said they launched 39 airstrikes against Islamic State (IS, ISIS) militants in Syria and Iraq over the past two days. The Combined Joint Task Force on Friday said it ordered bombers and remotely controlled aircraft to hit 19 targets in Syria and 20 in Iraq. The strikes in Syria destroyed buildings, a staging area, and several fighting positions. In Iraq, airstrikes hit near Al Asad, Sinjar, Mosul, Al Gaim, Baiji, Kirkuk, and Tal Afar, destroying or damaging a rocket system, vehicles, tactical units, and fighting positions, according to the statement. The strikes are the latest attacks conducted under Operation Inherent Resolve, which began in Iraq on August 8 and in Syria on September 26. It is part of the mission to eliminate the radical Islamist group in the region.
The U.S.-led coalition has conducted about 12 air strikes against Islamic State militants in Syria on Monday as well as 10 strikes Iraq, the U.S. military said in a statement. Reuters report: In Iraq, the strikes hit near the strategic northern Iraqi town of Sinjar as well as near Asad, Tal Afar,…
Iraqi Kurds retake more ground from ISIL - Kurdish Peshmerga fighters have reported more gains against the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) group, a day after they broke a months-long siege around the Sinjar Mountains. The Kurds said they had retaken a string of villages to open up the corridor to Mount Sinjar, where thousands ...
Iraqi women targeted for execution by IS The Islamic State (IS) does not make any distinction in terms of sex, sect or race when committing its heinous crimes. IS has recently focused its terrorism on civilian women who are active in politics, human rights, media and medicine. On Oct. 6, IS executed a Turkmen former parliamentarian for the province of Ninevah, Iman Mohammed Younis al-Salman, more than a month after she was abducted from her home in the district of Tal Afar. The militant group refused to hand over Salman's body to her family and instead threw it down a well. Salman was the first woman to enter the parliament for the district of Tal Afar and became a member of the House of Representatives in 2004. She was also the first woman to preside over a civil society organization in Tal Afar — the humanitarian organization Al-Malak — and the first woman journalist in the history of the Tal Afar district. 80 killed by IS in Iraq Militants in Iraq have killed about 80 Yazidis in a village in the north of the country, it has been claimed. A Kurdish official told Reuters that Islamic State (IS) fighters had arrived in the village and demanded they abandon their beliefs. A man from a neighbouring village, who had been told what happened, added: “The Islamic State had spent five days trying to persuade villagers to convert to Islam and … a long lecture was delivered about the subject today.” “The men were gathered and shot dead. “The women and girls were probably taken to Tal Afar because that is where the foreign fighters are.” Another official and a Yazidi politician also confirmed the hour-long “massacre” had taken place. Thousands of Yazidis – people from a minority sect with an ancient religion – have been forced to flee their homes by the IS advance. The extremist group, previously called ISIS, has swept across a large part of northern and central Iraq, taking Mosul and threatening Bag ...

ISIS Sunni militants have reportedly captured two more key border crossings, to Jordan and Syria, in western Iraq. The rebels, who include Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant (Isis) fighters, now control three border crossings in Anbar province, Iraq’s largest. Meanwhile, in the north, reports say the airport in the town of Tal Afar has also fallen to the rebels. The militants’ gains in large parts of western and northern Iraq have alarmed the international community. They have taken four strategically important towns in the predominantly Sunni Anbar province – Qaim, on the Syrian border, and Rutba, Rawa and Anah – in the last two days. Gunmen reportedly captured the border posts of al-Waleed, on the Syrian frontier, and Turaibil, on the Jordanian border, on Sunday after government forces pulled out. The capture of Anbar’s three border crossings means the government has lost control of all its Western borders, the BBC’s Jim Muir reports from Irbil. One tribal leader in Anbar told the BBC that ...
BBC NEWS- Oil price around nine-month high Violence in Iraq has sent oil prices close to a nine-month high. Brent crude fell 27 cents to $114.79 a barrel, after reaching $115.71 on Thursday, the highest since September 2013. Oilfields south of Baghdad, which export at least 2.5 million barrels per day of oil, are still unaffected. But the fighting in the north poses a risk to supplies, while foreign oil companies are beginning to pull out staff. Paul Horsnell, head of commodities research at Standard Chartered bank, said: "The market has priced in existing geopolitical risk." Global spare capacity in oil production is at about 2%, he said, meaning that a spike in demand of more than 2% will outstrip production. Libya comparison Islamist-led militants and pro-government forces are engaged in fierce battles for the Baiji oil refinery and Tal Afar airport in northern Iraq. Baiji, Iraq's biggest refinery, is surrounded by the rebels, who say they have seized most of Tal Afar airport. The fighting comes a day ...
IRAQ UPDATE FROM BAGHDAD ... A lot of this you will not hear on the news. We have HUMINT capabilities that provide our Risk Assessment Managers with this information. Surprisingly, Baghdad has been quiet this week. In previous emails I said that we feel safe here in Baghdad and that is still the case. The ISIL does not have the manpower or the supply lines to support any large scale attack into Baghdad or the airport. We continue to provide PSD security form our clients traveling in Baghdad. The large oil fields down south in Dhi- Qar province (my largest client) is operating at full capacity and has not changed their safety levels. will we ever learn to not be so stupid? Read on and feel free to comment. ~ U.S. SLIPPING INTO IRAN ALLIANCE IN SECTARIAN WAR Secretary of State John Kerry said aloud today what the Obama administration has been hinting for days: The U.S. military may help Iran fight against rival Islamists who are beheading their way through northern Iraq. Yes, that Iran. A country that claims to shoot down U.S. drones might be aided by U.S. drones in a new front of an old war between armies from rival branches of Islam. Reuters reports that Iranian leaders have said they’re open to the idea, paving the way for American air power to be used in support of Iranian ground forces. It would have sounded preposterous just a few weeks ago. But it sounds plausible today, as the city of Tal Afar and its more than 200,000 residents join the list of those conquered by a brutal, growing army seeking to create an Islamist state that spans across the Iraq-Syria border. After taking the Sunni side in the regional sectarian conflict f ...
