Sylvia Woods (February 2, 1926 - July 19, 2012) was an American restauranteur who co-founded the landmark restaurant Sylvia's in Harlem on Lenox Avenue, New York City with her husband, Herbert Woods, in 1962. The Soul Food eatery is a popular gathering place for Harlem residents and tourists not far from the Apollo Theater.
Sylvia's Restaurant, a Harlem soul-food landmark, attracts busloads of tourists from all over the United States and around the world, to the tune of approximately $3.5 million in yearly revenues. Sylvia's is a frequent stop for celebrities and politicians, including world leaders. With the launch of a line of prepared supermarket foods and a new Sylvia's restaurant in Atlanta, the empire of restaurateur Sylvia Woods has expanded to touch the culinary lives of people all over the country. Yet, writes Woods in her Sylvia's Family Soul Food Cookbook, "there's nothing that gives me, and now my whole family, as much happiness as knowing that we are giving each and every one of those people something extra: the gift of love that comes free with every meal." Woods herself has a remarkable story that encapsulates much of 20th-century African-American history. She was born Sylvia Pressley in Hemingway, South Carolina, on February 2, 1926. Her father, Van Pressley, died three days after she was born from the aftere ...

People you would not believe my schedule in the past 24hrs. Yesterday I went to a funeral of one of business partners wife, he cried so hard he died at the casket. Then I was off to the homegoing of my dear friend Mrs. Sylvia Woods (the queen of Soul Food). I then went to Brooklyn because my church had a gas leak, then to the Bronx my godson had a fight and went to jail, then my niece gave birth in Queens. I almost went home to rest and then remembered I had an important business dinner in Manhattan. To top things off this morning I flew out to a Medical Conference; I am now in Rio De Janeiro, Brazil. PRAY FOR ME.

What a Great Tribute today to Ms. Sylvia Woods, the Queen of Soul Food. Rev. Al Sharpton, Mayor Dinkins, Gov. Paterson and many others talked about how great an impact she made on everyone she met. She was kind to everyone, regardless of whether you were someone famous or someone from the neighborhood. Everyone was important to her. She always had a smile and wanted to make sure you were enjoying yourself and had enough to eat. She proved that as long as you had faith and a dream, nothing was impossible. She was someone that I always looked up to and learned a lot from. I feel very Blessed to have known her. Gone but not forgotten!!

Watched 20 minutes of Al Sharpton's eulogy of Sylvia Woods (of the legendary Sylvia's restaurant in Harlem) and it was the most entertaining and interesting part of my day. He talked about the hurdles that Woods' generation had to go through as Afro-Americans, how much she accomplished and mentioned how many young people of color with none of her impediments have not done ANYTHING. It got a good laugh from the congregation.but I think it may be true across racial lines as well.
