The Sherrin. On the ball used by the Australian Football League and several leagues playing the game here in Australia and nowadays around the world you will see TW Sherrin. This ball was invented by Thomas Sherrin in 1880 and in 1906 his ball was used to set the standard for Australian Rules footballs ever after. This ball also has the logo of both the Sydney Swans Football Club and also one of the team's major sponsors of the time. These sponsors logos only started appearing on the balls in 2006. Some nicknames for the ball are: The cherry The nut The pill and, long ago maybe, the agat.

JW's AFL POWER RANKINGS: WEEK 16 1. (1) Sydney Swans (12-3) Sydney suffered some kicking jitters and were held reasonably well by the Eagles, but West Coast just couldn't take advantage, suffering one of their 'off' games which sabotaged their top 8 chances all year. Not a good game by Sydney but unlike Hawthorn and Port they got the 4 points. 2. (2) Hawthorn Hawks (11-4) Maybe we should have seen the Hawks losing coming, after all North seems to play extremely well when you throw a top 4 team at them, and they outplayed the Hawks all game even with Gunston's 6 goals. One concern is I believe Luke Breust is playing to break the consecutive goals record, as a couple times faced with difficult shots he made poor decisions to lay them off instead of going for goal. This won't fly this week as they take on the dangerous Crows at Adelaide Oval. 3. (4) Fremantle Dockers (11-4) I really don't have much to say, another victory over a lesser team and again they enjoy the accolades of everyone. With games against G ...

Full time at AAMI Park in the 31st Big Blue, and it has finished all square at 1-1 as Melbourne Victory missed the chance to go second on the ladder. Sydney FC hit the front just minutes on the resumption of play after Joel Chianese tapped in from close range after Victory keeper Lawrence Thomas parried the ball into his path. The tempo of the match increased significantly as the hosts chased an equaliser, and were duly rewarded when James Troisi equalised in the 64th minute. Both teams battled to the final whistle, but could not find a winning goal. Heritier Lumumba and Ben Reid have become swingers, both good back men but both needed to play elsewhere, where does this leave our backline in 2014? We picked up Tony Armstrong from the Sydney Swans he looks at though he could play a key back line role in 2014, but he faces a tough task breaking into the best 22. Nathan Brown has been a key defender, but has to overcome injury issues to play an important regular role on the back line. Locking down on his opponent comes naturally, but the Pies will be hoping he can develop some attacking flair to complement his defensive skills. Jack Frost is trying to overcme injuries, and has looked good at times but finds it hard to hold a permanent position. Corey Gault plays in VFL and is trying to break into the senior back line but can play in a variety of positions. As a defender, he held his own against Joe Daniher and Jesse Hogan, before a groin injury ended his season. Australian of Year 2014: Adam Goodes, Sydney Swans footballer, recognised for anti-racism advocacy and youth work
Bookies expect to see a repeat of this scene in 2014 HAWTHORN is tipped to claim back-to-back premierships in 2014 by TAB Sportsbet, starting the year as favourites ahead of runner-up Fremantle and the Sydney Swans. The Hawks are $4.50 to win their third premiership under coach Alastair Clarkson, with Buddy Franklin's move to the Harbour City thrusting the Swans into equal second along with the Dockers at $5.50. Geelong is fourth in line at $7 and followed by Collingwood, Richmond and North Melbourne at $13. The odds suggest a fight between Essendon, Carlton and West Coast for the final spot in the top eight, with all three clubs at $21 for the flag. Adelaide ($26) is favoured ahead of arch rival Port Adelaide ($34) but not much is expected of Gold Coast or the Western Bulldogs ($101), Brisbane $126, Melbourne or Greater Western Sydney ($501). Superstar Sun Gary Ablett is the early favourite to claim his third Brownlow Medal at $7, ahead of Crow Patrick Dangerfield, Docker Nathan Fyfe, Magpie Dane Swan an ...
Got this from The Age Mobile app, however the article does not appear their website.. New Years Resolutions (by all AFL Coaches) these selected few are funny... Sydney Swans (John Longmire) To try and resist spending the next 9 years covertly visiting every hip Sydney night spot, every weekend.. Hawthorn (Alice Clarkson) To check before the season starts whether the walls of the MCG coach's box and the roof of the dugout have been reinforced. Gold Coast (Guy McKenna) To consider whether bringing in Campbell Brown as a boxing coach would be a good idea. David Warner is another possibility, however he is probably rooted to cricket. Fremantle (Ross Lyon) Do I want to have a new years resolution? Of course I do... Do I want to tell you what it is? Of course I don't. and just for the *** of it... Bucks. To try to keep the peace by resisting the humming of "La Bamba" when chatting with Heritier Lumumba"

Is there anyone out there after a Sydney Swans or West Coast or Port Adelaide or Melbourne Demons Foxtel Remote.?
The Wash-Up: Melbourne WITH Daniel Cross the latest addition to Melbourne's new look midfield, has the club done enough to improve in the area that left them so uncompetitive in 2013? It averaged just 40 inside 50s in 2013, matching only Greater Western Sydney for the season, with both sides six inside 50s per game off the next worst, St Kilda. The move to get Dom Tyson, who stands at 187cm, and the desire to get Jack Watts around the ball shows that Paul Roos understands you need height and power at stoppages. A quick look at the best combinations shows success starts with power around the ball. That means Max Bailey with Sam Mitchell/Jordan Lewis/Brad Sewell or Shane Mumford with the Sydney Swans' crop of midfielders or Brad Ottens with Cameron Ling or Darren Jolly with Luke Ball giving a team what is needed to get the wheels moving. Taylor Adams would have been a handy pick-up too to address that deficiency but he declared that he didn't want to go to Melbourne before they even had a chance to speak to ...

INDIGENOUS ALL STARS: IT’S TIME TO RECOGNISE The Indigenous All Stars squad has used its final training session before representing Australia in Ireland to call for the first 40,000 years of Australia’s history to be recognised in our nation’s Constitution. The team wore the shirts of the Recognise movement to perform their War Cry to help build support for the referendum within two years. The All Stars will be the first All-Indigenous team to represent an Australian sporting code at senior level overseas since the first cricket team toured England in 1868, more than 150 years ago. Head coach and Sydney Swans champion Michael O’Loughlin is a strong supporter of constitutional recognition. “Every one of the guys in this squad is about to go and represent Australia overseas and defend our nation’s sporting honour in this series,” O’Loughlin said. “And they’re doing that proudly even though their history – the 40,000-year history of Indigenous Australians – isn’t recognised in our n ...

Keep the faith or die trying: AS a diehard Fremantle Football Club supporter it is bitterly disappointing to have to miss my team's first AFL Grand Final appearance. But as luck would have it just wasn't meant to be. With overpriced airfares and scalpers in full swing, I've decided to watch them where it all began in the heart of the port city. So to stop me feeling sorry for myself my editor has allowed me to share my thoughts on the journey - Chris Connolly eat your heart out. After signing up as an inaugural member, I was one of the fans, who in the words of Jon Bon Jovi “kept the faith” but none of my prayers were being answered. Even last Saturday as I watched my team convincingly beat reigning Premiers the Sydney Swans, it was still hard to believe this was my team playing and going into a Grand Final. After all this was the team, that everybody labelled the basket case of the AFL and according to “Ross the Boss,” the baby nobody wanted. I mean between the wooden spoons, various coaches and ...

Hawthorne and Sydney Swans wore their own colours last year. Seems a bit dumb of someone to diss their trademark colour.
WHO TAKES CHARLIE HOME TONIGHT? If the raging favourite Gary Ablett does not win and the odds on offer suggest he will, than who does? History ove the years suggests tha umpires like to crown budding young champions and only vote for older acknowledged champions when their deeda over the year are indisputable. This year apart from Ablett none have stood out, therefore the umpires have an opportunity to vote for a budding young champion. The question is who will it be? The young champ usually comes from a club that is in the top 8. That, is a club that has won 12 or more games for the year. This rules ot at least 11 clubs the only exception is Gold Coast and Ablett. Of the remaining 7 Clubs we can discount Essendon, Richmond and Port Adelaide. The winner will therefore come from Hawthorn, Geelong, Fremantle, Sydney Swans, and Colligwood. The notion that the away team or one team should wear white shorts is outdated. Sydney Swans wear red shorts every week!

from what I remember you were wearing a Sydney swans jersey last year.. please explain
Proud moment - my little bro is the sports psychologist for Freemantle Aussie Rules Football team who just beat last years premiers, Sydney Swans, so now playing in the Grandfinal - he drafted 38 of the 44 players over the last 6 years and his boss said of their last win - it all came down to profiling and the character of the people he had chosen. Petah Gibbs is a Superstar!! . and the best brother one could wish for.
Finals Preview: Fremantle Dockers vs Sydney Swans This Season: Round 8: Sydney Swans 11.4 (70) Fremantle 9.16 (70) Preview: Sydney came here with a loss to the Hawks while beating the Blues the week after, while Fremantle came here with an upset win against Geelong in the Cattery. Sydney are looking to defend their Grand Final victory while Fremantle are looking for their maiden Grand Final appearance. For Fremantle, the time is now, they're firing on all cylinders and at their Patersons fortress, they are in prime position to get to the big dance for the first time in history. They are virtually healthy and rested, and like the Hawks their opponent is on the ropes before they arrive. For Sydney it's Deja Vu, in a similar position to last year, they have to get past a tough team on the road, and they have to do it without Goodes, Mitchell and Tippett. FREMANTLES THREE KEYS TO VICTORY: 1. Make the ground smaller: No I'm not saying magic, but the Dockers are superb at stretching the players throughout the g ...

ESSENDON has recalled Tom Bellchambers in a bid to bolster their ruck stocks against West Coast duo Dean Cox and Nic Naitanui on Thursday night at Patersons Stadium. But exciting young forward Joe Daniher has been omitted from the side with James Hird keen to play "two legitimate ruckman" against the Eagles. Bellchambers hasn't played since being dropped after round 10 and Daniher has been named as an emergency. Courtenay Dempsey has been recalled after missing two games following the brutal hit he copped against the Sydney Swans in round 10 that injured his chest. Heath Hocking is also out of the team with a calf injury. The Bombers are coming off the bye and will again be without veteran defender Dustin Fletcher, who missed the 43-point win over Gold Coast two weeks ago with groin soreness. Michael Hurley has also been named despite hurting his right wrist in the dying stages of the win over the Suns. The Eagles have made four changes with three of them forced. Andrew Embley is out with the one-match su ...
ADELAIDE Despite the week off with the bye, Jared Petrenko (shoulder injury sustained against the Sydney Swans) will still need to pass a fitness test to play against Gold Coast. He trained away from the main group on Monday. Sam Shaw returned to SANFL level at the weekend after booting five goals in the reserves and managed 10 disposals, five marks in defence. Mitch Grigg was Norwood's most prolific with 27 possessions and two goals, rookie Kyle Hartigan was good with 24 disposals and a goal, Jarryd Lyons had 22 touches and kicked a goal. Richard Tambling found plenty of the ball with 33 touches and Sturt teammate Aidan Riley was also good in a losing side with 20 disposals and six clearances. - Harry Thring Brisbane Lions After their upset win over Geelong at the weekend, it's hard to see Michael Voss making any changes to the Lions team to play Hawthorn on Sunday in Launceston. They did field a strong reserves team last week though, and any one of Rohan Bewick, Andrew Raines, Patrick Karnezis or James ...
AFL deputy chief Gillon McLachlan has given the strongest indication yet the League will introduce two byes next season. Some players, including Sydney Swans defender Ted Richards, have lobbied for the AFL to bring in a second bye next year. McLachlan said the AFL was "respectful" of the players' push for two byes but acknowledged such a move might prove unpopular for the football public. In a wide-ranging interview on Channel Seven's AFL Game Day on Sunday, McLachlan also said: • A fixture in which every team would play each other once before determining the run home would come under "strong consideration". • The AFL was "entitled" to have a say in the appointment of the next Melbourne coach. • Any money the AFL puts towards assisting the embattled Demons would come from "some fat" in the League's club future fund. • There is a "strong argument" for Melbourne to receive a priority draft selection. • He believed the ASADA investigation into the Essendon supplements scandal would be completed by ...
EMERGING star Chad Wingard inspired Port Adelaide to the upset of the season, a slogging 18-point comeback victory against the Sydney Swans on Saturday. The Power trailed at three-quarter time but Wingard triggered a late surge as Port won 10.12 (72) to 8.6 (54) at a sodden AAMI Stadium. Port ruined the comeback game of the visitor's prized recruit Kurt Tippett, who kicked a goal in the first minute and finished with two in an ominous debut for his new club. But in wet and windy conditions, Port kicked five goals to two in the last term to stun the Swans and climb into the top eight. Wingard booted three goals, including two in the tense final stanza, while Port's acting captain Brad Ebert, Matthew Broadbent and veteran hard-nuts Dom Cassisi and Tom Logan revelled in the heavy going. The Swans were superbly served by midfielders Josh Kennedy and Jarrad McVeigh and backman Nick Malceski was prominent. But the flag fancies lost ex-skipper Adam Goodes, who was substituted at three-quarter time with an injure ...

West Coast has brought back experienced stars Darren Glass, Beau Waters, Mark LeCras and Josh Kennedy as they endeavour to keep their finals hopes alive with a win over Hawthorn at Etihad Stadium on Friday night. A number of other big guns are also back for round 13, with Jonathan Brown and Brent Moloney returning to the Brisbane Lions side, Harry Taylor back in Geelong's team and Kurt Tippett to line up for the Sydney Swans for the first time. But it's the Eagles who have received the biggest boost at the selection table. Glass, Waters, LeCras and Kennedy are among six inclusions in their team, along with Bradd Dalziell and Patrick McGinnity. Adam Selwood (back) and Josh Hill are both out injured, while Ashton Hams, Jacob Brennan, Brad Sheppard and Jamie Cripps have been dropped. The Hawks have made just one change for the big clash, with Shane Savage replacing Isaac Smith (corked calf). Port Adelaide has lost Travis Boak (finger) and Cameron Hitchcock (ankle) to injury, with Domenic Cassisi and Jasper P ...
WEST Coast rookie Jeremy McGovern has proven he is well and truly over an ankle injury, leading Claremont to a 54-point Foxtel Cup belting of Southport at Patersons Stadium on Tuesday night. McGovern, the son of former Fremantle and Sydney Swans player Andrew McGovern, appeared completely unrestricted by his ankle, kicking three goals in the first half to help the Tigers race away to a commanding 44-point lead by the main break. The imposing 21 year-old led strongly and demonstrated clean hands both in the air and below his knees, finishing with 11 marks among his 15 disposals. Last year's Foxtel Cup (and West Australian Football League) premier looked a class above Southport from the onset, controlling the tempo of the game and restricting their opponent to just one goal in the first half. Southport, to its credit, refused to lie down, grinding out three goals to four in the second half to minimise the damage. Ben Daniher, the 19-year-old son of former Essendon player and Melbourne coach Neale, was busy ...
Port Adelaide captain Travis Boak will spend a fortnight on the sidelines after having surgery to repair a dislocated finger on Monday. Boak suffered the injury in the final minutes of Sunday's 75-point win over Greater Western Sydney at Skoda Stadium. Along with the dislocation, scans also found minor ligament damage, according to portadelaidefc.com.au. On Monday night, Boak posted a photo of his injured finger on social networking site Instagram (below), writing: "Not the best looking finger, just didn't want to go back in. Surgery went well. Will be back very soon." Boak will miss matches against the Sydney Swans and Collingwood, before an expected return against Essendon in round 15. The 24-year-old has played every game this season, averaging 25.1 disposals and 4.2 tackles per outing.
REIGNING premiers the Sydney Swans are set to regain injured young guns Lewis Jetta and Sam Reid for Saturday week's clash with Port Adelaide. The Swans are in stellar form, but with Kurt Tippett's 11-game suspension now over there is every chance coach John Longmire will make three changes to the side that belted Adelaide by 77 points. Reid has missed two games due to a quad tear, while Jetta was absent from the rout against the Crows due to a shin issue. "He's going along well now and just needed to unload for a week or two, which he's done and we'll have him running next week leading into the next game," Swans physiotherapist Matt Cameron said of Jetta. Cameron said the club was also upbeat about Reid being available to take on the Power after the mid-season bye. "Sam's been out for a couple of weeks and has now started running this week, which is great," he said. "His rehab plan has him running faster into next week, and we'll make a decision about his training in the second half of the week and wheth ...
THE RETURN of Fremantle stars Matthew Pavlich and Aaron Sandilands remains unclear with coach Ross Lyon saying both need to build their fitness at training before coming under consideration. None of Pavlich, Sandilands or Michael Walters will face the Brisbane Lions this week. Lyon is hopeful Walters will come back against North Melbourne in round 13 but the prognosis for the two key talls is uncertain. "We don't know exactly when they will be back," he said at a press conference on Tuesday. "Hopefully Michael will be available the week after but the other two guys, it's going to be a work in progress. "I can't give you anything definitive." Lyon was happy with the way his captain, Pavlich, was progressing with his recovery from Achilles surgery but said he was still a while away yet. "He's certainly moving along really nicely. We're confident he's going to play in the near term," he said "But he needs to get a training block under him, as does Aaron." Meanwhile, Lyon declared the Sydney Swans the team to ...
DAN HANNEBERY'S run of good form has been recognised by the AFL coaches with the Sydney Swans midfielder moving into outright second in the AFL Coaches' Association Award behind Gold Coast's Gary Ablett after 11 rounds. Hannebery's 42-disposal game against Adelaide was enough to propel him past Essendon's Jobe Watson, who failed to poll in the Bombers' thrilling win over Carlton on Friday night. Swans co-captain Kieren Jack also passed Watson in the overall standings after coaches John Longmire and Brenton Sanderson awarded him eight votes for his 32-disposal effort against the Crows. Remarkably, all six games on the weekend produced a clear choice for the best player afield. Jarrad Waite's seven goals against Essendon, Ablett's 32 touches and two goals in the Suns' win over North Melbourne and Dane Swan's 39 disposals against Melbourne all received the maximum 10 votes from the coaches. It was a good weekend, too, for the Selwood family with Geelong's Joel (29 disposals, two goals) and West Coast's Scott ...
Sydney Swans coach John Longmire says that recruit Kurt Tippett, whose suspension is now over, is a big chance to come straight into the side against Port Adelaide in two weeks time. In other Sydney news, ruckman Shane Mumford is set to miss close to a month with a broken cheekbone. - AFL.com.au

Essendon defender Courtenay Dempsey is still a chance to play this Friday night against the Blues, despite being stretchered off against the Sydney Swans and coughing up blood. Simon Hill and Andy Harper are more biased toward the Socceroos than Paul Roos is to the Sydney Swans
WHO'S HOT: Sydney Swans. The reigning premiers are just starting to tick over and find some of that form that won them the 2012 premiership. They time their run perfectly every year and with a heap of premiership stars still to return and just some bloke called Kurt Tippett, who, no matter what you say, is a terrific player. They are getting better each and every week, and with the likes of Tippett, Rhyce Shaw and Alex Johnson just a few names to return, they are a distinct chance of back to back premierships.
A Dangerous Game Peter P – 03/06/2013 PATRICK DANGERFIELD will notch up his 100th game this week against the Sydney Swans on Saturday. When you look at how he plays and his on field ability and how much this young man has achieved, it’s hard to believe he's only just climbing into three figures! Dangerfield was picked at Number 10 in the First Round of 2007 National Draft from the Geelong Falcons (who have an amazing list of superstar AFL players, both past and present including Garry Ablett Jnr, Jimmy Bartel,Luke Hodge and Cameron Ling to name just a few) Dangerfield debuted in Round 20 (win), 2008 against the Bombers, and was the 162nd player to début for the Adelaide Crows in an official game and joined the first kick, first goal club only handballing up until he scored his first goal. Originally wearing number 19 for his first 2 games Dangerfield moved in the number 32 locker vacated by another Crows legend Mark Riccutio in 2009 Dangerfield is one the quickest players to reach the 100 milestone, ...
Watching the Sydney Swans vs. Essendon Bombers footy match from Sydney on t.v...what a great sunday funday! Cheers! :)
RACIAL vilification of AFL players by spectators happens virtually weekly across the competition, says North Melbourne president James Brayshaw. Brayshaw says racial slurs such as the "ape" taunt delivered to Sydney Swans star Adam Goodes by a Collingwood fan at the MCG last Friday night are common. "As the president of a footy club which has wonderful indigenous people playing for us, it's not a one-off incident, it happens way too often," he told the Nine Network's AFL Footy Show on Thursday night. "It's virtually a weekly occurrence, I think across the board. "And I think Adam Goodes what he was doing last Friday was basically putting his hand up and saying: 'Enough. We shouldn't have to in the two hours we run out on an AFL field have to put up with that being said across the fence.' "And I totally agree with him. "I think it's a good stance and we as a code should support it." Brayshaw said players racially abusing each other had been virtually stamped out, but the same thing now had to be done with ...
ALMOST a year ago to the day, David Zaharakis trudged from a training session at Windy Hill, his eyes on the ground, his arm grabbing at his leg. On a light run the day before the Bombers met the Sydney Swans in round 11 last year, Zaharakis kicked a ball and felt a pinch in his quad. He hadn't experienced a soft-tissue tear before, and presumed it was "a normal, little, three-week injury." That hope changed when he entered the rooms. "When I did it I didn't know the severity, so I walked off the track and went inside and tried to kick a ball with the doctor," Zaharakis told AFL.com.au. "I couldn't even kick two metres. The pain in my leg meant I just couldn't kick the ball. From then on the doc didn't really say much and I knew that probably wasn't a great sign. To miss nine weeks was pretty bad." To put it lightly. Before his torn quad tendon, the midfielder was playing the most damaging footy of his career, better than his 2011 best and fairest year. When he returned in round 21, against Carlton, he la ...
Paul Daley gives his Observations about the week.     JUDGMENT is everything in public life. Lose it and you’ll forego much more besides – like respect and maybe office. Judgment equips leaders with the capacity to reflect noble and worthy public sentiment - and to condemn the populist and just plain wrong. ...   The public is not always right. But when it is and the leaders are wrong, the condemnation is swift and harsh.   Example one: Reconciliation Week arrived as autumn turned to winter - and reminded us just how unreconciled we really are. The storm cloud of inequity and casual racism that defines relations between white and indigenous Australia broke with a thunderclap to the nation’s soul thanks, initially, to a 13-year-old Collingwood supporter who racially-abused Sydney Swans player Adam Goodes from the fence.    It might have ended there, with the angry condemnation of a child who didn’t know better and the unwanted focus on a club that has been haunted by the image of another A . ...
