PARIS DRAW DOES NO FAVOURS FOR FRENCH FINAL SHOWDOWN CONTENDERS: The draw for the BNP Paribas Masters, the final tournament of the regular ATP World Tour season, has done no favours for France’s two Barclays ATP World Tour Finals contenders. Richard Gasquet, who holds down the final qualification spot at ninth position in the Emirates ATP Race To London, is just 65 points ahead of his compatriot 10th-placed Jo-Wilfried Tsonga (3,055 points). But the pair could potentially meet on Wednesday in the Paris third round. Gasquet and Tsonga are tied at 4-4 in their FedEx ATP Head2Head series. View Paris Singles Draw | Play ATP World Tour Fantasy Tennis With eighth-placed Stanislas Wawrinka (3,150 points) in the opposite half of the draw, it means that only one of them can qualify for the Barclays ATP World Tour Finals, should Wawrinka win his first match at the ATP World Tour Masters 1000 indoor tournament in the French capital. NISHIKORI: JAPAN'S RISING STAR: The eight top seeds at the Swiss Indoors come from seven different countries, one of which is Japan. Basel offers a fascinating mixture of nationalities. The fact that Asians, who are generally smaller in stature, are playing an ever greater role in tennis is down to Kei Nishikori. After having already been as high as number 11 in the rankings, the 24-year-old is currently ranked 18th, but for several months now he has been on a clear upward trajectory. Two years ago in Basel he reached the final as an outsider and lost to Federer, but now, only two years later, he is already considered to be one of the favourites to win the tournament. Nishikori got off to a winning start by disposing of Marco Chiudinelli. It is possible that he will cross paths with Federer, the man who he beat this year on sand in Madrid, in the quarter finals. In his home country Nishikori, who trains in Florida, is a huge attraction. His first match in Basel was broadcast live on pay-TV channel Gaora i ...
Sheffield’s Jonny Marray is hoping for a strong finish to the season - starting this week at the Swiss Indoors.
’m not done yet, says Federer 21 October Basel, Switzerland - Roger Federer admitted on Sunday that he made serious errors in his planning which have contributed to a disastrous 2013 campaign, but insisted that retirement is not on his agenda. The 17-time Grand Slam title winner has slumped to number eight in the world, his lowest point in more than a decade, and failed to make a final at any of the four majors, a run of disappointments that has led many in the sport to predict the end of the road for the 32-year-old. The Swiss, who split last week with coach Paul Annacone after more than three years, confessed that he could have done things differently. “I played matches that I should never have played,” said Federer, ahead of his participation in his home Swiss Indoors event which starts on Monday. “I should have left in Indian Wells (last March, with back pain) before the quarter-finals against (fellow Swiss Stanislas) Wawrinka. This summer, I should not have tried to play on clay in Hamburg an ...
