"On one side, new India is saying, if we only adopt western ideas, western language, western food, western dress, and western manners, we shall be as strong and powerful as western nations; on the other, old India is saying, 'Fools! By imitation, other's ideas never become one's own; nothing unless earned, is your own. Does the *** in the lion's skin become lion?'" - Swami Vivekananda

A book has for the first time revealed the foodie side of one of Hinduism's most celebrated gurus. Here we share a dozen facts that make Swami Vivekananda at once a foodie and master chef.
Swami Vivekananda was a Hindu spiritual leader who made a big splash in the US in the late 1800s, and he is still considered the guru to India's Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
By education I am an Englishman, by views an internationalist, by culture a Muslim and I am a Hindu only by accident of birth -- these are the words of Jawaharlal Nehru. But we believe we are Vedantic by education, universal in our views, Sanatan Bharatiya in culture and a proud Hindu as Swami Vivekananda by birth and also by conviction. Vandemataram.

Come out into the broad light of day, come out from the little narrow paths, for how can the infinite soul rest content to live and die in small ruts? Come out into the universe of Light. Everything in the universe is yours, stretch out your arms and embrace it with love. If you ever felt you wanted to do that, you have felt God. - Swami Vivekananda
Unity of Mankind The Qur'an says, "O Men, have fear of your Lord, who created you from a single soul. From that soul He created its mate, and through them, He scattered the earth with countless men and women." (4:1) This shows that men and women have been created from the same substance. Their being physically one, of necessity, demands their spiritual oneness. Making a similar point, the Prophet Muhammad said that all human beings are brothers (Abu Dawud). This gives rise to the concept of a common brotherhood, and without doubt, it is this sense of brotherhood which generates the strongest feeling of oneness and togetherness among different people. That is to say that when all human beings in this world are virtually blood brothers, they must, as this concept necessarily demands, live as brothers in spirit too. Any other way of living is a deviation from the reality. I should like to refer here to an incident which illustrates this point. In 1893, Swami Vivekananda went to Chicago to participate in the ...
Effect of Globalization on Indian society Globalization “Critics of globalization contend that, even if increased trade promotes material prosperity, it comes with a high spiritual and cultural cost, running roughshod over the world’s distinctive cultures and threatening to turn the globe into one big, tawdry strip mall.” Socialization of people for improving business and financial activities across the globe can be referred as globalization. It is not a new phenomenon as people kept searching new places and avenues to increase their business activities as evident by explorations of Vasco-digamma, Columbus and East India Company. Bitter experiences from East India Companies & British rule makes Indian little bit cautious for adventures of globalization. This has been the root cause for delay in liberalization in India. In literary terms, globalization has been defined in several ways as evident from definitions reproduced below. In the initial sense of the term, globalization refers to the spread of ...

Oneness: The Message of India Swami Vivekananda Swami vivekananda return to India and his message Nivedita Raghunath Bhide Swami Vivekananda had the unique advantage of knowing the East as well as the West. He had experienced Samadhi at the feet of Sri Ramakrishna Paramahamsa who personified the spiritual sadhana of man through ages. Swamiji had the best of Western education, had digested all the philosophies including the theology of Christianity. Not only the knowledge but he also got intimately acquainted with the people both learned and uneducated, highly placed and humble folks in India and also in West. Thus he could see the pluses and minuses of each civilization, he could also see that beyond all the identities, pretensions, it was the same humanity which was striving to know the Ultimate whether consciously or unconsciously. He saw that to manage to live up to the complexity of human life man has to have the foundations of his life based on eternal truths of existence. Swami Vivekananda had said, ...

In the early 1890s, one of the greatest scientists of the western world worked on a challenge thrown at him by one of greatest Indian philosophers. Nikola Tesla, the extraordinary inventor and father of electricity as we know it today, met with Swami Vivekananda – one of the greatest spiritualists of Hinduism. The Indian Swami offered him a treasure trove of Vedic wisdom about the matters of energy and matter, about how the vedic science considered the universe to be charged. Tesla promised the Swami that he would mathematically demonstrate that force and matter could be equated to potential energy in some fashion. In a letter to a friend, dated February 13th, 1896, Swami Vivekananda noted the following: Mr. Tesla was charmed to hear about the Vedantic Prana and Akasha and the Kalpas, which according to him are the only theories modern science can entertain. Mr. Tesla thinks he can demonstrate that mathematically that internal linkforce and matter are reducible to potential energy. I am to go see him ne ...

Why a Hindu girl must not marry a Muslim boy The mysterious death of the Muslim young man Rizwanur Rehman, after his marriage with a Hindu girl Pryanka Todi, has triggered a nationwide debate regarding inter-religious marriage between Hindu girls and Muslim boys. As the matter is still under the jurisdiction of the honourable court of law, one cannot say whether it is a case of murder or suicide. While talking to journalists, Mr Hazrat S M Nurul Rehman kati, the Imam of the Tipu Sultan Mosque of Kolkata, declared it to be a murder and expressed his apprehension that RSS is involved in the crime. But it seems more probable to have a hand of the Islamist terrorist groups in the affair. In a letter written by Rizwanur to an NGO, a copy of which is with the local Trinamul Congress MLA, Javed Khan, Rizwan has been reported to have expressed his decision to desert Islam and embrace Hinduism. In fact, Javed Khan was acting as a mediator between Rizwanur and Ashok Todi, the father of Priyanka. In this context, on ...

Study of Scriptures (Continued) Sri Ramanuja defines svadhyaya as the study of the Vedas with the conviction that they deal with God, His glories and the modes of worshiping Him. The most important part of the Vedas is their knowledge portion, known as the Upani- shads, or Vedanta. The Upanishads deal with the true nature of God and of man, and the goal of human life, which is God-realization, or Self-realization. The Right Attitude toward Scriptural Study A study of the Upanishads is difficult without a teacher’s help. Traditional commentaries are also a great help in understanding the Upanishads. But these commentaries include detailed discussions on opponents’ viewpoints and their refutation, and elaborate reflections on finer aspects of Sanskrit grammar. A scholar certainly revels in the mastery of all these details, but a devotee’s attitude is different: he studies scriptures in order to keep his mind on a higher level, sharpen his power to discriminate between what leads to God and what leads ...

On enquiring, he learnt that a great Indian Saint Shri Swami Vivekananda was on board thesame ship. Â Out of genuine respect and curiosity J.N. Tata decided to pay a visit to the great saint. Swami Vivekananda had of-course heard about the respected industrialist. As the conversation grew J.N. Tata explained that he was on his way to Germany. Â "I have with me sacks of soil : From various parts of India. I am taking these samples of soil to Germany. I wish to know IF Iron can be extracted profitably from any of these districts." said J.N. A story about the finest Education Institute of India from its establishment to current status, a worth read and share !! Indian Institute of Science (Bangalore) is truly the first example of a public-private partnership in this country; an institution, whose evolution over a century is testimony to the robustness of its foundations. The Indian Institute of Science (IISc) was conceived as a ´Research Institute´ or ´University of Research´ by Jamsetji Nusserwanji Tata, in the final years of the 19th century. A long period of almost thirteen years was to elapse from the initial conception in 1896 to the birth of the institute on May 27, 1909. The early history of the Institute is a fascinating chapter in the story of higher education and scientific research in India. The cast of characters in the drama that led to the establishment of the Institute includes, in addition to its charismatic and generous founder J.N. Tata, figures from the pages of Indian history. There is Swami Vivekananda, whom J.N. Tata ...

. The Concept Of Hindu Rashtra K. Surya Narayan Rao, Bangalore, Senior RSS Pracharak I am proud to be a worker Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh, for whom Hindu Rashtra is the cardinal principle. It is a matter of conviction and faith for us. It is our life breath. This concept of Hindu Rashtra is not a creation of R.S.S. Great savants like Swami Vivekananda, Arvinda Ghosh, Lokamanya Tilak, Swatantrya Veer Savarkar, Mahakavi Subramanya Bharati and others have all proclaimed our nation as Hindu Rashtra. Dr. Annie Besant and Sister Nivedita, both accomplished intellectuals from the West, who were attracted by the culture and people of this country, and adopted this country as their motherland, have also acknowledged our nation as Hindu Rashtra. But now political leaders and a section of the media are trying to create some confusion about this Hindu Rashtra belief. Each is interpreting according to his own understanding and background, neither there realising the truth nor keeping an open mind to know what the pro ...

Role of SindhWorkis (Sindhi Traders in foreign countries) in Gadar Revolt & INA under Subhash Chandra Bose Submitted by: Dial V. Gidwani- Sindhu American , American Institute of Sindhulogy Sindhulogy The Sindhi Hindu community uprooted as the result of India’s Partition, now girdles the globe. But then for Sindhi traders, globalization was never a new concept. For decades, well before Partition, Sindhi traders (commonly known as SindhWorkis) had established themselves practically in every city of the world, with larger concentration in Japan, Singapore, Hong Kong, Indonesia and Malaysia; through the Middle East to Africa and Gibraltar, and across Britain and Europe to the U.S. and Latin America. So much was the presence of these Sindhi traders in practically every world city that a dear old lady, whom I had the pleasure of knowing, commented after Neil Armstrong’s dramatic landing on the Moon, “Amazing, he found no one there, not even a Sindhi trader!” This joke was extended by a well known Sin .. ...
A great father... Because of poverty and family responsibilities my father postponed his dreams of becoming a teacher and writer until the age 60. Then he flowered. He travelled throughout India to give talks and published ten books on a variety of topics including Aging, Dying with Dignity and Swami Vivekananda. Some of them are reprinted. He is 80 and with us in Canada for two months to enjoy beautiful summer and also to complete two more books. He showed me that it’s never too late to realize your dreams. He also told me that that he would like to leave the world, the way my mother did. She was a born home maker and died while dusting the furniture. He wants to die while reading or writing.
- Swami Vivekananda Buddha VIVEKANANDA ON LORD BUDDHA He was the only man who was bereft of all motive power. There were other great men who all said they were the Incarnations of God Himself, and that those who would believe in them would go to heaven. But what did Buddha say with his dying breath? "None can help you; help yourself; work out your own salvation." He said about himself, "Buddha is the name of infinite knowledge, infinite as the sky; I, Gautama, have reached that state; you will all reach that too if you struggle for it." Bereft of all motive power, he did not want to go to heaven, did not want money; he gave up his throne and everything else and went about begging his bread through the streets of India, preaching for the good of men and animals with a heart as wide as the ocean.
It is our own mental attitude which makes the world what it is for us. Our thoughts make things beautiful, our thoughts make things ugly. The whole world is in our own minds. Learn to see things in the proper light --swami vivekananda
Swami Vivekananda -- This is the gist of all worship -- to be pure and to do good to others. He who sees Siva in the poor, in the weak, and in the diseased, really worships Siva, and if he sees Siva only in the image, his worship is but preliminary. He who has served and helped one poor man seeing Siva in him, without thinking of his cast, creed, or race, or anything, with him Siva is more pleased than with the man who sees Him only in temples.

In 1902, a professor asked his student whether it was God who created everything that exists in the universe? Student replied: Yes He again asked: What about evil? Has God created evil also? The student got silent... Then the student requested that may he ask a question for him? Professor allowed him to do so. He asked: Does cold exist? Professor said: Yes! Don't you feel the cold dear? Student said: I'm sorry but you are wrong sir. Cold is a complete absence of heat... There is no cold, it is only an absence of heat. Student asked again: Does darkness exist? Professor Said: Yes! Student replied: you are again wrong sir. There is no such thing like darkness. Its actually the absence of light. Sir! We always study light & heat, but not cold & darkness. Similarly, the evil does not exist. Actually it is the absence of love, faith & true belief in God. That student was... Swami Vivekananda...!!!
"Do not stand on a high pedestal and take 5 cents in your hand and say, 'here, my poor man', but be grateful that the poor man is there, so by making a gift to him you are able to help yourself. It is not the reciever that is blessed, but it is the giver.Be thankful that you are allowed to exercise your power of benevolence and mercy in the world, and thus become pure and perfect." -Swami Vivekananda
FREQUENCY AND VIBRATION Nikola Tesla was convinced that everything in the universe, from galaxies to electrons, consists of vibration and frequency. He also felt that everything in the cosmos is connected by a single pervasive “super” consciousness, or one intelligent living organism. “My brain is only a receiver,” he said. “In the universe there is a core from which we obtain knowledge, strength, inspiration. I have not penetrated into the secrets of this core, but I know it exists.” This greatest inventor of the 20th century used ancient Sanskrit terminology to understand natural phenomena. As early as 1891, Nikola Tesla described the universe as a kinetic system filled with energy, which could be harnessed at any location. His concepts during the following years were greatly influenced by the teachings of Swami Vivekananda. Swami Vivekananda was the first of a succession of Eastern yogis who brought Vedic philosophy and religion to the West. After meeting the swami and after continued study ...

When do we feel the need of God? ‘We want everything but God, because our ordinary desires are fulfilled by the external world. So long as our needs are confirmed within the limits of the physical universe, we do not feel any need for God; it is only when we have had hard blows in our lives and are disappointed with everything here that we feel the need for something higher; then we seek God.’ - Swami Vivekananda

Returned yesterday from Mumbai after participating in the Annual celebration of Ramakrishna Math, Mumbai. On 28th June I spoke on Avatarvarishtha Sri Ramakrishna and explained how Sri Ramakrishna - the latest and most perfect incarnation of God according to Swami Vivekananda, killed demons of doubt (Sanshay Rakshas), demon of fanaticism (Dharmandhata Rakshas) and demon of consumerism (Bhogwad Rakshas). On 29th June, during the Spiritual Retreat, I spoke on the significance of Spiritual Retreat, how it gives an opportunity to us to think about the ultimate purpose of life, there was interesting question-answer session towards the end of the Retreat.
HOW TO BUILD SELF-CONFIDENCE 10 - LOVE Love is that magic word which works like a tonic t manifest instant confidence even in a moment . Love makes impossible things possible . Abraham Lincoln , the greatest president of the United States , got that confidence & courage t fight for the abolition of slavery through love . It was his unselfish love for mankind which promoted him t act . His loving heart could not witness the sufferings of human beings who were treated worse than animals . A young Irish woman , Miss Margaret Noble , inspired by the speeches of Swami Vivekananda in London , decided t come t India & help Swamiji in his mission of upliftment of Indian women . What was that force which made her renounce everything & follow Vivekananda t India ? It was her love for India . Swami Vivekananda could instil that love in her heart . This love in her heart for the masses & the women of India gave her great confidence t overcome all obstacles in her way . She served India by starting a school for girls ...

"All power is within you; you are the reservoir of omnipotent power… Awake from this hypnotism of weakness. None is really weak; the soul is infinite, omnipotent and omniscient. Stand up, assert yourself, proclaim the God within you… Teach yourself, teach everyone his real nature, call upon the sleeping soul and see how it awakes. Power will come, glory will come, goodness will come, purity will come and everything that is excellent will come, when the sleeping soul is roused to Self-conscious activity." ~ Swami Vivekananda
Viveka Vaani: For Spiritual & Material well being: Prayer is not a "spare wheel" that you pull out when in trouble, but it is a "steering wheel" that directs the right path throughout. Do you know why a Car's WINDSHIELD is so large & the Rear view Mirror is so small? Because our PAST is not as important as our FUTURE. Look Ahead and Move on. Friendship is like a BOOK. It takes few seconds to burn, but it takes years to write. All things in life are temporary. If going well, enjoy it, they will not last forever. If going wrong, don't worry, they can't last long either. Old Friends are Gold! New Friends are Diamond! If you get a Diamond, don't forget the Gold! Because to hold a Diamond, you always need a Base of Gold! Often when we lose hope and think this is the end, GOD smiles from above and says, "Relax, sweetheart, it's just a bend, not the end! When GOD solves your problems, you have faith in HIS abilities; when GOD doesn't solve your problems HE has faith in your abilities. A blind person asked Swami ...

10 Scientific Studies That Prove Consciousness Can Alter Our Physical Material World Nikola Tesla said it best, “the day science begins to study non-physical phenomena, it will make more progress in one decade than in all the previous centuries of its existence. To understand the true nature of the universe, one must think it terms of energy, frequency and vibration.” Swami Vivekananda was Tesla’s mentor, an Indian Hindu monk and chief disciple of the 19th century saint Ramakrishna. Science works best when in harmony with nature. If we put these two together, we can discover great technologies that can only come about when the consciousness of the planet is ready to embrace them, like free energy. I want to make it clear that my intention of presenting this information is to demonstrate that thoughts, intentions, prayer and other units of consciousness can directly influence our physical material world. Consciousness can be a big factor in creating change on the planet. Sending thoughts of love, hea ...

Kasar Devi has history and is a legendary place : Read on--- Kasar Devi first became known when in the 1890s, Swami Vivekananda visited and meditated here and has mentioned his experience in his diaries.. Walter Evans-Wentz, a pioneer in the study of Tibetan Buddhism, who later translated The Tibetan Book of the Dead, stayed here for some time. . Then in the 1930s, Danish mystic Sunyata Baba (Alfred Sorensen) came here and lived here the over three decades, as did Ernst Hoffman, who became Tibetan Buddhist Lama Anagarika Govinda and Li Goutami. This lead to a series of spiritual seekers from the west, visiting them. In 1961, Govinda was visited by Beat poets, Allen Ginsberg, Peter Orlovsky and Gary Snyder. In later history, at the peak of the Hippie movement, the area also became a part of the Hippie trail. Crank's Ridge, colloquially known as Hippie Hill, which lies ahead of Kasar Devi became a popular destination. It became home to several bohemian artists, writers and western Tibetan Buddhists, and eve ...

Today I was in RKM Chandigarh, talking with a maharajji (monk). 2 senior police inspectors stormed in for approach of their superitendent's kid for admission in RKM School. Now the maharajji humbly scolded them off and never forgot to mention to send his 'words' to the superitendent. After I walked out the 2 policemen signalled me near van asking in shock, what 'approach' these men in saffron have? :D I ended up replying, from an ordinary me to the Prime Minister of India are regular devotees of this place. And all devotees, non-devotees are treated equally at its gate. Unless they carry a letter of approach from the Governor General, Swami Vivekananda or the Emperor, Sri Ramakrishna or a Buddha, Christ, Nanak, Mohammad etc - himself; these men in saffron can't be startled or bombed with however big an authority or name. Next moment, the van was speeding at 60 :D :D
HARI OM A LAND OF DEEPENING MORAL VACUUM Vivekanand Jha Author of Delhi Beckons: RaGa for NaMo Modi's development agenda and his dream to elevate India to the level of Jagatguru will remain inconsequential unless India's moral compass is restructured and redefined and the ever widening gap between the two extreme sides of the moral pendulum is successfully bridged. While delivering a memorable speech in U.S.A, Swami Vivekananda had proudly said that while the western forefathers wandered in the forest as barbarians, their oriental counterparts meditated on god and sincerely endeavoured to realise Him. Although Swami Vivekananda sought to portray a positive image of the wretched India through the prism of spirituality, it still satiated his heart that his motherland had the singular distinction of being the moral guardian of the world which taught the world the concept of morality and god. And he greatly succeeded in his mission: selling the moral and spiritual superiority of orientals to the Americans who ...
