Stonewall Inn

The Stonewall Inn, often shortened to Stonewall is an American bar in New York City and the site of the Stonewall Riots of 1969, which are widely considered to be the single most important event leading to the gay Liberation Movement and the modern fight for gay and lesbian rights in the United States.

Heritage of Pride, Inc. (HOP / NYC Pride) is a non-profit organization that plans and produces New York City's official LGBT ( *** *** Bisexual, Transgender) Pride events each year. Heritage of Pride hosts New York City’s Pride events in commemoration of the Stonewall Riots of 1969. The Stonewall Riots were a series of spontaneous, violent demonstrations by members of the LGBT community against a police raid that took place in the early morning hours of June 28, 1969, at the Stonewall Inn in the Greenwich Village neighborhood of New York City. They are widely considered to constitute the single most important event leading to the LGBT Liberation Movement and the modern fight for LGBT equal rights in the United States. Remembering those who fought for LGBT equality at the Stonewall Inn on this day in 1969.
This year’s New York City Pride marks the 45th anniversary of the historic 1969 Stonewall Riots. At 1:20 a.m. on June 28, 1969, police raided the Stonewall Inn, a popular *** dive in the New York’s Greenwich Village. The evening quickly turned from raid to riot, with patrons refusing to hand over identification and fighting back against authorities. Only one known photograph was taken during the night of the riots. It appeared on the front page of the New York Daily News the following day and depicts several homeless youth taking on the police. This event is widely considered the catalyst for the the modern *** rights movement, which has birthed many notable heroes – as well as some notable antiheroes. We couldn’t possibly list them all, but we’ve done our best to compile a diverse list of 45 people — both well-known heroes and everyday folks, with a decided emphasis on the latter (no celebs) — who have made a lasting impression in the ongoing fight for equality. Happy Pride 2014.
The White House Thursday, June 05, 2014 Good afternoon, In this White House LGBT Update, you will learn about the Obama Administration's ongoing efforts to advance equality for the *** *** bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) community. To commemorate LGBT Pride Month, President Obama issued a Presidential Proclamation -- his sixth since taking office -- highlighting the progress we have made and emphasizing the work that remains. In the President's words: This month, as we mark 45 years since the patrons of the Stonewall Inn defied an unjust policy and awakened a nascent movement, let us honor every brave leader who stood up, sat in, and came out, as well as the allies who supported them along the way. Following their example, let each of us speak for tolerance, justice, and dignity -- because if hearts and minds continue to change over time, laws will too. Please feel free to share this news with your colleagues and networks, and please encourage them to sign up for updates. To learn more about the Wh ...

This happened in New York City of all places, the seat of Christopher Street and the Stonewall Inn where a raid on a *** bar in June of 1969 led to events which have put rainbow parades across the globe, we LGBT folk marching proudly through the streets, for over forty years. Why, after all this, would violence suddenly spike? Because in 2013 we are no longer confined to one parade once a year in our larger cities. The 44th Anniversary of the Stonewall Inn-surrection Introduction to a Cautionary Critique I am very encouraged by the Supreme Court's ruling declaring DOMA (the so-called Defense of Marriage Act) unconstitutional according to the Fifth Amendment's Equal Protection clause, and now same-sex couples who legally marry in states that have such rights will receive federal marriage benefits. Also, by throwing the decision on California's Proposition 8 back to the lower court, which had already judged the voter-approved ballot initiative unconstitutional, the Supreme Court has virtually guaranteed same-sex couples in California the legal right to marry. On May 9 of last year, President Barack Obama, in an interview with ABC's Robin Roberts, "came out" for marriage equality, asserting that "same-sex couples should be able to get married." In 2011 I watched when the news broke that the New York State Senate, following the New York State Assembly's lead, had passed a bill legalizing marriage for same-sex couples. I ...

Today would not have been possible without them.
It has been said that Garland's death and funeral, held in New York City in June 1969, helped inspire the Stonewall Riots, the flashpoint of the modern *** Liberation Movement. However, some observers of the riots contend that most of those involved "were not the type to moon over Judy Garland records or attend her concerts at Carnegie Hall. They were more preoccupied with where they were going to sleep and where their next meal would come from. In a 2009 interview, *** historian David Carter stated that this connection was based on a mocking reference to the riot by an anti *** writer in the Village Voice the next day. There was certainly an awareness and appreciation of Garland among Stonewall Inn patrons. Because the bar had no liquor license, it was passed off as a bottle club and patrons were required to sign in. Many used pseudonyms and "Judy Garland" was among the most popular. Regardless of the truth of the matter, the Garland/Stonewall connection has persisted and has been fictionalized in Stonew ...

Today I had a choice. I could have chosen to attend my children's Valentine events at their elementary school -- but I chose instead to get arrested in an act of nonviolent civil disobedience to take a stand for LGBTQ equality. You see, we are in the middle of a "movement moment" for LG...BTQ equality -– a fight that has gone on for decades, and that many believe we will inevitably win. The president even mentioned Stonewall during his inauguration speech, but now our challenge is to seize this "movement moment" -- as was done at the Stonewall Inn in 1969. When I first joined this fight, I was a mom working full-time while raising my beautiful young children in the conservative Central Valley region of California. I took action because inequality came knocking on my door -- though I had run from the oppressive environment of my native Mississippi and sought refuge in the gleaming promise of California, I couldn't escape inequality's grip when Proposition 8 passed. Nearly three years ago, we mobilized. W ...

Had a nice time tonight seeing my friends Audrey Luce, Sue Doster, David Schneider, David Gomez and many more at the Heritage of Pride/NYC Pride Volunteer Thank You Party at Stonewall Inn. Then had a fantastic dinner with my even more fantastic Uncle Paul at a great Vietnamese Place on 1st Ave. I don't think I express it enough just how fortunate I am to have an Uncle who is so amazing as him and who really made me realize just how ok and how much life can be as an openly *** man.

"This is a major turning point in the history of American civil rights. No American president has ever supported a major expansion of civil rights that has not ultimately been adopted by the American people and I have no doubt that this will be no exception. The march of freedom that has sustained our country since the Revolution of 1776 continues, and no matter what setbacks may occur in a given state, freedom will triumph over fear and equality will prevail over exclusion. Today's announcement is a testament to the President's convictions, and it builds on the courageous stands that so many Americans have taken over the years on behalf of equal rights for *** and *** Americans, stretching back to the Stonewall Inn in Greenwich Village." ~Michael Bloomberg
Good morning all. Went out yesterday, just to get out of the house. Went to Stonewall Inn with Andy. Met a nice bartender, listened to some good music and drank. Today I am paying for it. Major sinus headache and throat is killing me. Seems like I just can't get rid of whatever infection I have.
Anyone know where I can go to get a *** chicken sandwich? I mean really *** I'm talking Harvey Milk singing "It's raining men" in the Stonewall Inn ***
Well. What a wonderful day spent mostly in Greenwich Village. Lunch at a place called Jekyll and Hyde. It was sort of like Chuck E Cheese for adults that like curious, bizarre, horror themed things. It was a nerdy blast. Stonewall Inn for a few drinks chatting with a very nice bartender, random dinner stop at a place called Garage that was anything but. We scoped out the locations of our two theatre's tomorrow so we know where we're going when it matters tomorrow. There was other things mixed in there but those were the highlights. New York is awesome. Now to sleep--and hopefully not wake up hungry at 2:00 am again--and go on to day three.
The popular monthly stand-up show at the Stonewall Inn will make its Edinburgh Fringe Festival debut Aug. 19th! See website for details:

Olive Garden in Times Square, surprised Harriet White, pizza at Lombardi's, explored Chinatown and got dessert in Little Italy, went to the Guggenheim, looked at the UN, hung out with my cousin, live jazz in a whole in the wall next door to the Stonewall Inn, walking home at 1 a.m. during a lightning show, triumphantly stood before the Cordoba House (inappropriately known as the "Ground Zero Mosque") and reflected on the Bill of Rights and walked around Rockefeller Center. Quite a weekend with Joy Han.
