Stolen Valor Act /Other Bills Introduced: The Stolen Valor Act, legislation that would make it a crime to knowingly benefit from lying about receiving a military valor medal was introduced this week by Congressman Joe Heck (R-NV). VFW has been very vocal and intimately involved in the stolen valor debate. The bill, H.R. 253 currently has 63 original cosponsors and was referred for consideration to the House Judiciary Committee, the same panel that approved Heck's bill last year. Violators would face a fine and up to one year imprisonment. For more information or to join the conversation visit our blog at: VFW-supported bills, all of which we advocated for last year were reintroduced this week, they include: **H.R. 303 legislation that would extend full concurrent receipt to all military retirees receiving VA disability pay and their retirement pay---current law provides concurrent receipt on a phase-in schedule for only those retirees rated 50% or above by VA. **H.R. 288 allows dependent children of veter ...

The SV Act attached to the Defense Authorization Act of 2013 which passed the Senate this week. (This is separate from Senate passage of the Webb Bill earlier.) The SV Act is incorporated in the Senate version of the Act now on its way to the house. Below is text from that section: DIVISION F--STOLEN VALOR ACT TITLE LI--STOLEN VALOR ACT SEC. 5011. SHORT TITLE. This division may be cited as the ‘Stolen Valor Act of 2012’. SEC. 5012. FINDINGS. Congress find the following: (1) Because of the great respect in which military service and military awards are rightfully held by the public, false claims of receiving such medals or serving in the military are especially likely to be harmful and material to employers, voters in deciding to whom paid elective positions should be entrusted, and in the award of contracts. (2) Military service and military awards are held in such great respect that public and private decisions are correctly influenced by claims of heroism. (3) False claims of military service or mil ...
Stolen valor act? McGrory on Scott Brown's claim to "serving" in Afghanistan
It appears that the Stole Valor act, which made it illegal to falsly claim to have been awarded high end military awards such as the Medal of Honor or Purple Heart has been repealed because of all things, it infringes on peoples fundamental rights to lie. Every so often I'm actually ashamed to be an american. *** America!.
It's the Stolen Valor Act all over again.
A Wolf That Comes as a Wolf by National Director, Dee on Monday Beware the Democrats' Deceptive Practices and Voter Intimidation Prevention Act of 2011 (S. 1994). If you like the tendentious nit-picking of Politifact, you'll love S. 1994 because it will empower a whole new set of self-appointed fact checkers. But, if you are concerned about politically motivated mischief, you'll see it as a wolf in wolf's clothing, like Senator Grassley (R-IA) does. The First Amendment protects some false speech, as the Supreme Court recently held in finding the Stolen Valor Act unconstitutional. It doesn't protect all false speech, though, and Senate Democrats want to subject more false speech to criminal prosecution. S. 1994, "Prevention of Deceptive Practices and Voter Intimidation in Federal Elections," would make it a federal crime to make knowingly false statements about the time or place of an election, the qualifications of voters, or claims of endorsement within 90 days of a federal election. In order to be a cri ...

Nothing pisses me off more than someone wearing rank and a fake unit patch, then claiming that it's real. Earn the real thing, then ccome and talk to me. E7 rank with an N between the rockers and chevrons? And an SF patch with only 1 bar across it? Yeah, fake as *** People like that are the reason the Stolen Valor Act needs to be enforced. Either that or make it so veterans can beat the *** out of the fakes with no jail time or fines.

Something I dont quite get; Supreme Court repeals Stolen Valor Act,faster than a flash of lightining, saying it goes against 1st Amendment rights. Umm,no. Hence, Stolen Valor. Then, they spend what seems like eons debating *** *** rights to marry. Seriously? This is a no brainer. Pretty sure nothing bad will happen, except 2 people will be happy together.

On Sept. 13th, the House passed the new Stolen Valor Act by a landslide vote of 410-3 (16 not voting). I was surprised - well, I shouldn't have been - that Ron Paul voted against it. My husband served 24 years in the Navy. He worked very hard and earned every award and acknowledgement he got. I don't think it is a "freedom of speech" issue when someone lies about having medals and awards for serving in the military when they did not receive them.

Lawmakers push for new Stolen Valor Act - The Ruptured Duck - Stripes:
article from Airforce Magizine. Valor Cannot Be Stolen By Adam J. Hebert Editor in Chief People lie about the Medal of Honor because it means so much. July 16, 2012, Washington D.C. "I’m a retired marine of 25 years. I retired in the year 2001," said Xavier Alvarez, introducing himself at a 2007 meeting of the Claremont, Calif., district water board. "Back in 1987, I was awarded the congressional Medal of Honor [for bravery during the Iran hostage crisis]. I got wounded many times by the same guy." Alvarez was a compulsive liar, and his story was a complete fabrication. His previous tales had included yarns about him playing hockey for the Detroit Red Wings and marrying a Mexican actress, but it was the Medal of Honor claim that landed him in hot water. His boast violated the Stolen Valor Act of 2005, a law passed to stem a tide of people falsely claiming they had earned military honors. The act sought to uphold the prestige and reputations of those who really had earned awards by putting an end to an e ...

So, with a little research (about 2 minutes using Google) I have found that if you impersonate an officer of the law you could be charged with a misdemeanor or up to a felony. While the Stolen Valor Act was in effect (signed into law in 2005 by former President George W. Bush but repealed by the Supreme Court on July 28, 2012 because they said it was unconstitutional under "Freedom of Speech") the maximum time in prison for a "Federal Misdemeanor" is one year and that was only if you were wearing the Medal of Honor (our country's highest award). Even if you do not agree with the war in Afghanistan...I only ask that you repost this and ask that your friends and their friends repost this out of respect to the military men that have fought and currently fight. In 2005 President Bush and Congress put in place the Stolen Valor Act. The purpose of this act was to prevent people from wearing things they did not earn. IE. Military uniforms and medals. These 'Fakers' would be given 6 months to a year in prison based on what medals they wore. A similar act was passed before this. 7 years before George Washington was elected as the 1st president he placed the act for the military to be awarded medals based off of the achievements of the person receiving the medal. In addition to this he stated that 'Any persons found to be wearing a medal that has not been earned by that individual will face severe punishment.' On July 2, 2012 the Supreme Court was given an appeal for a case of a California man who pleaded guilty of violating the Stolen Valor Act...Claiming ...

Thousands died for this country, Thousands wounded and awarded a Purple Heart, Medal of Honor Recipients all disgraced by the stroke of a pen. Thanks Supreme Court for ruining our Country.
THOMAS FLEMING: The quashing of the Stolen Valor Act means that in the U.S., politicians who tell self-serving lies about their military service are now protected by law.
Don't know if anyone noticed, because of all the noise re ObamaCare, but in another decision that same day, Alvarez v. U.S., the Supreme Court ruled 6-3 that the Stolen Valor Act, making it a crime to claim military honors falsely, was an unconstitutional infringement on the First Amendment. The defendant, who had lied and claimed to hold a Congressional Medal of Honor, got away with it. Decision is below. Happy 4th of July!
Supreme Court.sounds fancy. these are the brave and diligent men and women who interpret the constitution. i bet its an extremely serious felony to dress in a robe and act like one of them. we (Military), on the other than, bleed for the constitution. but hey, its free speech right? so i just found out it was the Supreme Court repealing of the Stolen Valor Act which led to First Amendment protection for the "god hates *** freaks. unknown to me until now, this act also made it legally wrong to walk around dressed like a Marine, and spewing fake war stories to get a hero's attention from the public. first let me point out that it is quite flattering to have grown men who want to be us so bad theyll lie. must feel great to look at themselves in the mirror while putting on that uniform, not knowing the history, tradition, and regulations to the uniform that make it so unique and special. this is frankly just wrong. we have plenty of laws in place that prove to me that law makers have morality in thei ...
So now that the so called Supreme Court has ruled that the Stolen Valor Act is ,once again, unconstitutional I can come out and tell of my exploits without worry of going to jail. As most of you know I was, am, a Marine and I am an Atomic and Vietnam veteran. That part is the truth. But I bet you didn't know that I was awarded 3 Medal of Honors, 2 Navy Crosses and 5 Purple Hearts and numerous other medals that will take up too much space to name. I can say all of this because those loonies say I can. Love my country. Hate my government.
Obamacare: Approved. My faith in the Supreme Court was restored for a little less than a week... then they struck down the Stolen Valor Act.
Ok.No more Stolen Valor Act. You can claim to have been in the military, served in conflicts, claim decorations and use such claims for monetary gains if you so desire. You cannot, however, claim to be an elected official, judge, law enforcement officer or anyone else in a like position. Hm I guess we vets need to ensure that we all carry around our military ID's, DD-214's and notorized statements from three (3) witnesses to attest who we are. If you will excuse me now I have to catch a plane to Washing-laugh D.C. Me and my fellow judges have several cases to hear.
Stolen Valor. True stories of liars in violation of the Stolen Valor Act. Pretenders, liars and frauds claiming military honors they didn't earn.

'Stolen Valor Act' Shot Down by High Court... Please pray for our Supreme Court !!!
The Stolen Valor Act was overturned by the Supreme Court under the protection of the First Amendment. Before you put on that military uniform or medals that you never earned and tell your lies just remember, you may be protected by the First Amendment but the First Amendment will not protect you from a veteran. Tread wisely. Shame on you America.

Seems that Stolen Valor Act strike dwn is not important enough to talk about
Unbelievable! The U.S. District Court has overturned the "Stolen Valor Act". This Act made it illegal to unlawfully represent yourself as a military service member. The District Court seems to think that if you want to say you are a military member, WHEN YOU ARE NOT, that we would be violating your free speech to stop you. What is really going on??? Read more about the ruling,
SCOTUS ruled against Stolen Valor Act because Obama is impersonating the Commander-in-Cheif & now USCMJ DOES NOT APPLY.

Supreme Court delivers bitter but necessary reversal of Stolen Valor Act
I am extremely troubled by something. After an online encounter with a couple of people regarding the Supreme Court's striking down of the Stolen Valor Act, I did some online looking around - and what is with the disdain for military spouses?
What is everyone thinking about the shooting down Stolen Valor Act?
The overly broad and now unconstitutional Stolen Valor Act should be replaced with legislation that better targets false claims from those who didn't serve.
The Supreme Court just struck down the "Stolen Valor Act", so anyone can claim and go out and buy a CMOH, Silver Star, Bronze Star, Purple Heart, etal and not have to produce a DD214.DISGUSTING!

So, I've been a little bit peeved lately with the Stolen Valor Act being rejected by Congress. If in place, this act would ensure that those who fraudulently represent themselves as serving in a military manner and receiving medals they did not earn would go punished. Congress says this is a violation of our 1st Amendment rights and now these "fakers" will continue to go on and misrepresent themselves at the expense of our true heroes. Medals are earned and not "won", those who have lost and suffered are the true heroes, not some wannabes who bought their medals @ the clothing exchange store on base, e-bay, or some other misleading site. Represent our heroes, write your congressman and tell them how this act needs to be instilled to protect the innocent, the true heroes, and the ones we love! HOOAH!!!
