On Sept. 13th, the House passed the new Stolen Valor Act by a landslide vote of 410-3 (16 not voting). I was surprised - well, I shouldn't have been - that Ron Paul voted against it. So, with a little research (about 2 minutes using Google) I have found that if you impersonate an officer of the law you could be charged with a misdemeanor or up to a felony. While the Stolen Valor Act was in effect (signed into law in 2005 by former President George W. Bush but repealed by the Supreme Court on July 28, 2012 because they said it was unconstitutional under "Freedom of Speech") the maximum time in prison for a "Federal Misdemeanor" is one year and that was only if you were wearing the Medal of Honor (our country's highest award). I am in no way belittling our police force, but does that make any sense to anyone?

So, if the Stolen Valor Act was rescinded because it imposed on peoples' freedom of speech, does that mean that if I'm ever called upon to testify in court, when they ask me, "Do you swear to tell the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth?" I can say "no" because they are preparing to temporarily take away my freedom of speech? Seems legit to me!!
It should be considered a criminal act for one to falsely claim receipt of a government award of rank or commendation. The Stolen Valor Act must be rewritten as necessary within the framework of the Constitution.- John Hollner

A similar act was passed before this. 7 years before George Washington was elected as the 1st president he placed the act for the military to be awarded medals based off of the achievements of the person receiving the medal. In addition to this he stated that 'Any persons found to be wearing a medal that has not been earned by that individual will face severe punishment.' Funny thing is, he didn't define any of those words because he knew they didn't need further definition. Our faith is our faith. U.S., the Supreme Court ruled 6-3 that the Stolen Valor Act, making it a crime to claim military honors falsely, was an unconstitutional infringement on the First Amendment. So now that the so called Supreme Court has ruled that the Stolen Valor Act is ,once again, unconstitutional I can come out and tell of my exploits without worry of going to jail. As most of you know I was, am, a Marine and I am an Atomic and Vietnam veteran. That part is the truth. But I bet you didn't know that I was awarded 3 Medal of Honors, 2 Navy Crosses and 5 Purple Hearts and numerous other medals that will take up too much space to name. So, I've been a little bit peeved lately with the Stolen Valor Act being rejected by Congress. If in place, this act would ensure that those who fraudulently represent themselves as serving in a military manner and receiving medals they did not earn would go punished. Congress says this is a violation of our 1st Amendment rights and now these "fakers" will continue to go on and misrepresent themselves at the expense of our true heroes. Medals are earned and not "won", those who have lost and suffered are the true heroes, not some wannabes who bought their medals @ the clothing exchange store on base, e-bay, or some other misleading site. Represent our heroes, write your congressman and tell them how this act needs to be instilled to protect the innocent, the true heroes, and the ones we love! HOOAH!!!
