Okay... I admit it... I'm a complete guitar techie nerd. My latest? Getting rid of the hum/buzz from my single coil Texas Specials... Yeah, I know... go buy some noiseless pickups for between $230 to $300 or more... With all the $ I gotta put out right now as a Dad/Granddad-business owner & a citizen of the new strapped economy, it just ain't gonna happen right now. But, people are noticing the noisy pickups, and my abilities to hide it when the band gets quiet just ain't fast enough to pull my pedals & volumes down. So... I got curious about these "dummy pickups" which it is said that Stevie Ray, Ritchie Blackmore, and others had in their Strats. I did my research and found that I had a leftover humbucker from a Schecter guitar that I replaced. I tore it apart & robbed the coils & got rid of the magnet. I found a way to stack them with a ground shield between them in my control cavity. So one handles my neck & bridge. The other takes care of the reverse wound middle pickup. I also found an ingenious way ...

Well the Ludington gig is over. We packed the trailers and headed home on Sunday. The event was successful in that the new equipment worked flawlessly. The new LED lighting washed the stage with ever changing colors and the new Mackie Thumpers pumped out thunderous, yet very clear and crisp sound. A great sound investment (pun?). We found that most every club in Ludington was light on attendance due to the awesome weather and the packed campgrounds. Also rumor of fireworks and outdoor parties kept many people from traveling to clubs. But we did a great job and had a great time. During our breaks, people had made their way to me to praise us for our sound, vocal harmonies, and our solid looks. Everyone in the band sings and a few of us were dressed like wannabe rock stars. I have a Tim Krekel story. I usta go to concerts alone quite a bit, Delbert McClinton, Tommy Castro, Patty Griffin to name a few, and would walk downtown from my Butchertown home to the Kentucky Center or the Brown Theatre, Stevie Ray's etc. Well, I went to see Crosby & Nash one night in March or April at Whitney Hall several years ago and was walking home down Main Street after the concert, it was a clear, post rain night and the tall buildings and the downtown lights were awesomeness incarnate! As I passed Zena's (one of my fave bars) I heard a fantastic ribbon of music float out and fill those city canyons and I thought to hear the city singing its own song, Louisville's voice, Louisville's soul now. It was a totally magical tripped out moment to look up at that sky and those city lights and have my heart feel Tim's music as a universal song. I was drawn across the street to have a whiskey and a dance to TK and TKO and lifted my glass to Louisville, Steve Ferguson and all the other great musicians wh . ...

A musical force equipped with the soulful vocals of Janis and the guitar slinging skills of Stevie Ray, Carolyn Wonderland reaches into the depths of the Texas blues tradition with the wit of a poet. She hits the stage with unmatched presence, a true legend in her time. “She'd grown up the child of a singer in a band and began playing her mother's vintage Martin guitar when other girls were dressing dolls. She'd gone from being the teenage toast of her hometown Houston to sleeping in her van in Austin amid heaps of critical acclaim for fine recordings Alcohol & Salvation, Bloodless Revolution, and most recently, Miss Understood. Along with the guitar and the multitude of other instruments she learned to play – trumpet, accordion, piano, mandolin, lap steel – Wonderland's ability to whistle remains most unusual. Whistling is a uniquely v ...

TEXAS MUSIC IS LOVED LOU ANN BARTON For FEBRUARY 27th 2014 Lou Ann Barton (born February 17, 1954, Fort Worth, Texas, United States) is an American blues singer based in Austin, Texas since the 1970s.In the early 1970s, she was a member of the Triple Threat Revue, with W. 2nd best part of the Triple H doc? The random appearances of Stevie Ray, Billy Kidman, and... Norman Smiley!
Artist Biography by Stephen Thomas Erlewine With his astonishingly accomplished guitar playing, Stevie Ray Vaughan ignited the blues revival of the '80s. Vaughan drew equally from bluesmen like Albert King, Otis Rush, and Muddy Waters and rock & roll players like Jimi Hendrix and Lonnie Mack, as well as the stray jazz guitarist like Kenny Burrell, developing a uniquely eclectic and fiery style that sounded like no other guitarist, regardless of genre. Vaughan bridged the gap between blues and rock like no other artist had since the late '60s. For the next seven years, Stevie Ray was the leading light in American blues, consistently selling out concerts while his albums regularly went gold. His tragic death in 1990 only emphasized his influence in blues and American rock & roll. Born and raised in Dallas, Vaughan began playing guitar as a child, inspired by older brother Jimmie. When he was in junior high school, he began playing in a number of garage bands, which occasionally landed gigs in local nightclu ...
It's 15 degrees outside this old drafty house and the heat pump can't keep up. I'm on the recliner with Emmitt Smith, Delroy Lindo and Stevie Ray. All three are shivering under our shared quilt. Patsy Cline will not even come out of her blanky to join us. She probably doesn't want to get under the quilt with those smelly boy dogs. This will not last long.
Whether its Stevie Ray about his Pride and Joy, Hank Williams about Dixie, or Waka Flocka about his gun sounds, passion creates good music.

Stevie Ray and some Jimi calls for a good night
On Friday's Breakfast show we played Stevie Ray Vaughn – Little Wing. On Monday morning we want to play a song suggested by you . The only stipulation is that it needs to be connected to Stevie Ray. It can be someone he’s collaborated with (and there’s been a few), someone who’s covered his songs or someone he's toured with. So, get your thinking caps on. The connection is entirely up to you. Just make it a good song so we can play it!
Rey Mysterio should've been in that storyline too. Where was Billy Kidman? Kanyon? Stevie Ray? Eddie Guerrero when he was with WCW?

Booker and Lash Huffman are in fact real life brothers who started to wrestle professionally in 1989 in the World Wrestling Alliance owned by Ivan Putski, they soon moved on to the Global Wrestling Federation where they were given the name "The Ebony Experience" and were managed by Gary Hart, they won the tag titles 3-times and were the only team to do so. They made their WCW debut in 1993 as Kane and Kole from Harlem wit Col. Gal on the playground: "Your poor wife with all your traveling, I know when my husband is gone on a fishing trip for two weeks it's just horrible" Me: "Wow, does your husband catch 10 grand while he's gone?" Dad at a kid's Basketball game: "A friend of mine at work plays bass and he's never heard of you." Me: "What kind of a rock has he been hiding under?" Friend of a friend: "So and so is a Doctor who plays guitar and it would really be a thrill for him to sit in with your band" Me: No problem, I've always wanted to do surgery, perhaps we can work out a barter deal" Someone calls and says: "Can you play at such and such...there's very little money but the exposure ...

Once when I was bummed out I wrote this: (You can tell the impact music has on me) The beauty of the blues makes me cry when I’m healthy What will happen when I die? Dickie and Duane’s blue sky, Carlos’ samba pa ti Stevie Ray singing about life by the drop My wake will be a celebration Let the world know: If only they were affected like I was When Burton sings “It feels good even missing you” as I’m lying in my box I dare you to keep a dry eye Even in death I will shudder From the enormous emotion As John Fogerty croons “put a candle in the window” My friends will know That they can’t join me yet for the ultimate sense

Tonight my search for stage time, led me into the heart of the city, to a night club by the name of."Stevie Ray's".Id been there once before, years ago and did the exact samething, but back then, there was no discussion, i asked if they would consider the Comedy thing, they didnt and that was that.I never stepped foot back in that place, until tonight! This place, from the outside sounded as though it was packed from the sound of the music, but when i stepped inside, the visual told a different story. No buisness, but much like the "30RED" place on slow nights, there where musicans on stage performing. So i did my usual routine and walked to the bar and tried to carry on a conversation with the bartender while the noise from the instruments continued to produce sound! And Once again, i was told about a booking guy, but not given an email address this time. This time it was a number. And it seems most of these places want you to email them, and then the communication thing just lingers for days or weeks befo ...

Friday 22nd November at Barnsley Rock and Blues... Rockin` blues from PAUL LAMB AND THE DETROIT BREAKDOWN Paul Lamb... Detroit. Few words draw up such emotion and imagery as that one word sentence. It’s really a novel on its own, and it says more about music than most books ever could. One of the things most people forget in this modern era of music is the deep root of blues that comes from Detroit. One man who hasn’t is Paul Lamb and his band The Detroit Breakdown. Paul grew up in Detroit, listening to a mix of great rock radio like Bob Seger, Stevie Wonder, George Clinton and drew from other outside influences like Hendrix and Stevie Ray as he began to play guitar. After travelling the country seeking out his musical soul and playing with the best of the best, Paul has finally found what he was looking for right here at home. Listening to Paul Lamb and the Detroit Breakdown is a musical time capsule. It will take you through the drive and riffs of the 70’s, but also has the modern pulse that come ...

i'm am reading the saddest, most lyrical and poetic dystopian novel right now: The Dog Stars, by peter heller. i'm in its thrall. a sampling: "i play music sometimes.i have to be careful or it sends me back to that place i don't ever want to be again. can't be anything we used to listen to: we were a sucker for the decades old singer-songwriter, climb out of the bottle, country road stuff, whiskeytown to topley to sinead. we loved the Dixie chicks, who wouldn't.we thougth it was heartbreaking then. try playing it on a fine early spring morning with the hangar door open and a single redtail gyring over the warming tarmac: and i remember your honeysuckle scent i still adore i can't believe you don't want me anymore or the sweet wrecked mountain tenor of brad lee folk singing 'hard times...head hung down and homeless, lost out in the rain' i never thought i'd be an old man at forty. what i can play is blues. she was never that into blues. i can salve with Lightning and Cotton, BB and Clapton and Stevie Ray. ...

***R.I.P.*** Stevie Ray Vaughan (Oct. 3, 1954 – Aug. 27, 1990 / died in helicopter crash after a music festival) On 25th August 1984, I went to see my heros at that time, Little Steven (Steven Van Zandt) and The Alarm at the 3. Rockpalast Open Air Festival at the Loreley.Opening act Stevie Ray Vaughan & Double Trouble were unknow to me. They had me on the hook at first second, I entirely fell for Stevie Ray's way of guitar style. Way back then I didn't realize how deep he invaded my musical soul. My dedication to SRV lasts. Should I get Tinnitus some day (God beware) I hope it will sound like his guitar. Official SRV Website: & Info:

I've Got A Mind To RambleBy Susan O'Neil Toad Strangler Live at Stevie Rays and Live In The Rain The first time I had the pleasure of hearing Toad Strangler was at Stevie Ray's. They were on the bill with the bands that gathered one evening to raise money to send Lamont Gillispie and 100 Proof and the Joe Debow duo to Memphis for the International Blues Competition. There were lots of good bands playing at the benefit that evening, the best of the best in Louisville, for sure, so when Toad Strangler took the stage, I was expecting 'good' at the very least. What I got was jaw-dropping, awesome entertainment in the form of a larger-than-life female, harmonica-playing vocalist backed up by a group of music veterans who knew their way around a hard-driving blues groove. I was immediately in love with this group of musicians and knew that I would be digging deeper into the marvel that is Toad Strangler. That evening they delivered a head-bobbing set of originals from their debut CD, Live In The Rain,"and a few ...
Step 1 The most important issue in getting good guitar tone is all in the fingers: the way the guitar is played. 20 players can pick up the same axe plugged into the same amp without changing one knob on anything, and each will get a distinctly different tone. The sound will be similar, but the tone will change; more on the differences will follow. That’s Lesson One; Lesson Two is that every guitar is different. Some guitars are fast as *** others are slow and sweet, and others seem to fight every note you play. A big part of getting the right tone is selecting the right guitar—as is the case with every other instrument. Same goes for the strings. Size matters. Most of the “fat tone” guys like Stevie Ray played big fat *** strings, at least 10s (first string) and preferably 11s, 12s, or as Mr. Stevie Ray Vaughn chose, 13s. Go up in size from, say, 9s to 10s, you will notice a difference—for the better. Tone home A guitar’s ‘sound’ is something identifiable. Just as you can often recogniz . ...

So we had a great rendition of Warren G's "Regulate" a few weeks ago at Nye's. Great song ... more interestingly, a great DUET! Kristen Kuehn and I did a rousing version of "I've Got You, Babe" this week. I love duets! It's so much fun! So I want to get going this duet thing going on Monday's. Pick a duet that you want to do, with me or with someone else. I'll have it ready for you whenever we happen to cross paths. A few others I'd like to try. "Something Stupid" - The Sinatras "All I Need to Know" - Linda Ronstadt and Aaron Neville "Always on Your Side" - Sting and Sheryl Crow "Princess of China" - Chris Martin and Rihanna Any volunteers? We can sing them any Monday you happen to show up. Or after a Stevie Ray's show on a Friday or Saturday night at the Chanhassen Dinner Theater. I always have my music with me. I'm am VERY open to suggestions. Bring it people!

Okay Friends and Family we are having a boat naming contest. I'm in the midst of buying a boat and I need a name for the Coast Guard Registry. Remember, I'm a Jimmy Buffett loving Texas Boy so I'm thinking along those lines. There will be a grand prize of I pick your suggestion or even the one one that I like the most. I'm looking for something that will make people think (no obvious names like Margaritaville) come on, bring on the good stuff. I'm also open to Willie or Stevie Ray names. Let's get creative, I know y'all can do it.

Just watched the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame 2013. Pretty good class for once. I did a little research and wondered who are the *** that control this? Rolling Stone Magazine??? I see where Madonna, The Beastie Boys, The Dells, The Ink Spots, The Flamingos, a few no talent rap artists and several people that have made no impact on the music business worth mentioning are in the Hall. What shocked me was who isn't in. Journey, Chicago, Tower of Power, Kiss, Bad Company, Hall & Oates,The Cars, Cheap Trick, Stevie Ray,Def Leopard,Jethro Tull, Linda Ronstadt, Deep Purple,Yes, Joe Cocker... The list is enormous of deserving groups and artists. I know you can't put everyone in but Madonna and the Beastie Boys ahead of these acts? Fellow musicians, your opinions on this. I know I'm nuts but I ain't stupid!
I have a thing I do with the kids' homework I call "going for the A paper". It is when you go a little beyond the teacher's thinking and poke back at him/her just a bit to let them know you be smarter than they thunk at the time...Stevie Ray's assignment was to place three items or pictures in a bag that END with the letter "X". Here is the result of seeking "the A paper"...
Candy's River House, outstanding Salt Lake based blues rock n roll band, check em out. Thanks for letting me jam some Stevie Ray with you guys last night Jordan! On another musical note, I'll be playing a show with my old band, Perfect Disorder, next Saturday. We'll be opening up for Lita Ford and Slaughter at the Thunder Rock festival. Rumor has that we'll be playing everyone's favorite sock hop two step dance song, Ted Nugent's "Strangelhold." Hello 25 minute guitar solo! I'll do my best, but I'll just say if I don't literally melt your face with that one, I'll figuratively give you your money back. Ha ha see ya there!
Some pretty influential musicians are celebrating their birthdays today. Procol Harum frontman (and buddy of Colin John Greenan) Gary Brooker is 68, Melissa Etheridge is cancer-free at 52, and Noel Gallagher of Oasis is still testy, I'll bet, at 45. Today, Liz, Bill Gruber, and I will be giving you a chance to win a family 4 pack of tickets to watch the Akron Aeros host the Portaland Sea Dogs at Canal Park on Friday, June 7. I'll be giving mine away after nine. Despite their recent performance, Aeros games are the best non-musical entertainiment downtown. Now, for the music we'll hear this morning. We'll enjoy the latest from The Wild Feathers, Capital Cities, Dan Croll, Dawes, Pickwick, and the Dave Matthews Band, plus Summit favorites from The Records, U2, Todd, The Pogues, David Gray, The Cure, Lenny Kravitz, INXS, The Power Station with an apt song for today, Depeche Mode; Captain Beyond will leave us Sufficiently Breathless, we'll get a refreshing cold shot from Stevie Ray, plus we'll hear Mark David ...

Watching Diners Drive-Ins and Dives while listening to Thelonious Monk with John Coltrane. So much better this way. The wife and kids are away at "Girls Night Out" or something like that. Nothing like relaxing in a house that's quiet and peaceful. Time to ruin that. I'm gonna break out my guitars and crank up the Peavey Classic 30 stack. Hello neighbors. Guess I could get away with some Lenny Kravitz style 1970s poses but it's not really my style. Maybe the occasional Stevie Ray blues face as long as no one has a camera. Don't fret Johnny. I'll get back to the more politically-oriented posts in due time.
