The world’s greatest show has opened in Brazil. But I’m not excited. The talk in her about likely fairytale teams doesn’t include Nigeria. Hisses and sighs rent the air when Super Eagles is mentioned. What you hear are the exploits of Nwankwo Kanu, Austin Okocha, the late Rashidi Yekini, Emmannuel Emenike et al. They also talk about Stephen Keshi but the discussion stops at his feats with European teams because he played just a game at the USA’94 World. They ask how Nigeria dropped to such a laughable level where we are now parading a comity of bench warmers. They still celebrate Daniel Amokachi. Many purists still rate Da Bull as Nigeria’s best player, ahead of Kanu, courtesy of his exploits in England, Belgium and Turkey. They argue that Kanu was skillful, a match winner but he lacked the Da Bull’s guts. Nigeria kissed the USA’94 World Cup bye when Amokachi exited with the injury that nailed his career, they say. The argument can continue but my choice is Kanu. I wish these pundits could w ...
Nigeria defender Elderson Echiejile will miss the World Cup because of a muscle injury. The 26-year-old Monaco player limped out of Nigeria's 0-0 friendly draw against Greece in Philadelphia on Tuesday shortly before half-time. Echiejile underwent a scan where the injury was diagnosed as a muscle tear, which is expected to keep him out for up to three weeks. He will be replaced in the squad by Enugu Rangers winger Ejike Uzoenyi. Coach Stephen Keshi said: "Doctors have said Echiejile will need up to three weeks to recover from the muscle tear but we don't have that type of time to play with so we've taken the decision to replace him." Nigeria face Iran, Bosnia-Herzegovina and Argentina in Group F, beginning their campaign against Iran in Curitiba on 16 June. Revised Nigeria squad: Goalkeepers: Vincent Enyeama (Lille), Austin Ejide (Hapoel Be'er Sheva), Chigozie Agbim (Gombe United). Defenders: Efe Ambrose (Celtic), Godfrey Oboabona (Rizespor), Azubuike Egwuekwe (Warri Wolves), Kenneth Omeruo (Middlesbrough ...

World Cup Shocker: Keshi names Brazil 2014 30-man list, drops Mikel and Moses Super Eagles’ chief coach Stephen Keshi early this morning dropped the bomb-shell after he released a 30-man list as the Super Eagles begin preparations for the 2014 Fifa World Cup in Brazil in June this year. Millions of soccer loving Nigerians however will be shocked to know that two of our most influential/key players have been dropped for the mundial. It can be recalled that Both Victor Moses and Mikel Obi played a huge and significant role in the 2013 African Nations Cup triumph. However former Captain Joseph Yobo and Osaze Odemwingie are back in Keshi's plan for the World Cup. In a statement signed by the Assistant Director (Media) of the Nigeria Football Association (NFA), Ademola Olajire, released this morning, he said the 30 players are expected to report to the US based camp in May, where 23 players would eventually be selected for the World Cup. However, Mr Keshi tried to put fans’ minds at ease, defending his 30- ...
Onduku Backs Home-based To Shine Concordia Chiajna forward, Gomo Onduku is confident Nigeria will rise to the challenge at the Africa Nations Championships (Chan) without several key players who have moved abroad and are therefore, ineligible to play in the competition. The former Bayelsa United player was part of the side that edged past Ivory Coast to qualify, but has since moved to Europe along with Godfrey Oboabona and Sunday Mba. In addition to earlier departures such as Juwon Oshaniwa, Gabriel Reuben, Henry Uche, Izu Azuka, Alhaji Gero, Dele Olorundare, Uche Kalu and Tony Okpotu, key striker Mohammed Gambo has been ruled out due to injury, meaning Stephen Keshi is almost certain to field a weakened team. He admits the missing players would have added more quality to the team, but insists there is enough depth in the squad to make an impact in the tournament. "There is no team that would miss so many of its key players that wouldn't be affected in a way by their absence," Onduku told supersport.com. ...
Godfrey Oboabona and midfielder Sunday Mba’s experience will be sorely missed at the African Nations Championship, says former Super Eagles midfield star Moses Kpakor. The tournament taking place in South Africa kicks off on January 11 with Nigeria facing Mali in a Group A tie in Cape Town. Mozambique and South Africa are other Eagles’ opponents in the group of the championship popularly called CHAN. Nigeria qualified for the competition for the first time last year, with Oboabona and Mba instrumental in winning the ticket. Oboabona dumped Akure club Sunshine Stars for Turkish side Caykur Rizespor after the CHAN qualifiers last year while Mba is reportedly set to put pen to paper for a one-year deal at French second division outfit Bastia. And Kpakor believes Nigeria coach Stephen Keshi will missed their services, insisting their presence in the squad would have instilled a lot of confidence in the rookies selected for the competition. “Of course we will miss Mba and Oboabona,” the Algiers ...
Punch 2013: Year of amazing success DECEMBER 29, 2013 BY ’TANA AIYEJINA Nigeria sport review Nigeria began the year on a high and ended it on that note in sports but not without issues as usual, reports ’TANA AIYEJINA Football The average Nigerian sports nay football follower had already given up hope of the Super Eagles winning a third title at the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations in January. With coach Stephen Keshi excluding the likes of Osaze Odemwingie, Obafemi Martins, Taye Taiwo, Joel Obi, Victor Anichebe, Obinna Nsofor, for the likes of Godfrey Oboabona, Sunday Mba, Nosa Igiebor, Juwon Oshaniwa, Azubuike Egwuekwe and several other up-and-coming stars, the likelihood of the squad making any appreciable impact in South Africa was slim. The team did start on a not-too-impressive note, managing draws against Zambia and Burkina Faso in their first two group games of the tournament but that was how bad it got. After a hard-earned 2-0 win over Ethiopia’s Walya Antelopes, there was no stopping the Eagles. ...
FOOTBALL UPDATE:. Coach Stephen Keshi, has said he missed. players like Godfrey Oboabona, Gabriel Reuben. and...
I feel strongly that there is a glaring omission from the list of coaches of the year. I believe it is scandalous that Nigeria coach Stephen Keshi has not been named among the 10 men on the shortlist. That he has stayed in the job for two years, overcoming all the backroom intrigue and Machiavellian moves that a Super Eagles coach must face, itself makes him worthy of a nomination. And then let's look at his record. He led an inexperienced side to the Africa Cup of Nations title in South Africa at the start of 2013 - the first time for 21 years that a black African coach had won the trophy. Before the tournament, he was laughed at for his squad selection, for putting too much emphasis on local players and leaving out established stars such as Peter Odemwingie. Keshi took gambles with little-known players he saw something in and he proved his critics wrong as Godfrey Oboabona, Sunday Mba and others came good at a vital time - indeed it was Mba who scored the winning goal in the final. To win the Nations Cu ...
Kenneth Omeruo By Duro Ikhazuagbe With one leg in Brazil, courtesy of Emmanuel Emenike’s two goals in Nigeria’s 2-1 away victory in Addis Ababa last month, Super Eagles Head Coach, Stephen Keshi, has released a 25-man list of players to prosecute the 2014 World Cup play-off second leg match against Ethiopia on November 16 in Calabar. The good news of Keshi’s list is however the return of Chelsea youth team defender, Kenneth Omeruo, who has been on the sideline following the shoulder injury he suffered during Nigeria’s Confederation Cup campaign in Brazil last June. Keshi is also going to use the squad to prosecute the international friendly against former world champion, Italy at Craven Cottage ground of English Premiership club, Fulham FC, in a high-profile friendly in London barely 48 hours after the Battle of Calabar. Also making his come-back to the Eagles is former Kaduna United star, Reuben Gabriel. The attack-minded Reuben who now plies his trade with Kilmarnock FC in the Scottish league h ...
Super Eagles coach Stephen Keshi has said he expects improvements from his team even though they beat Cote d’Ivoire 4-1 in a CHAN qualifier. And as such, Keshi revealed that he plans to call up at least new three players ahead of the return leg of the CHAN qualifier in Abidjan in a fortnight. The Eagles coach also told MTNFootball.com that it was difficult for the coaching staff to get the players to understand how they wanted them to play against the Elephants of Cote d'Ivoire. Keshi equally expressed disappointment at the poor defending that led to the only goal scored by the Ivorians on Saturday in Kaduna. "We have practised how defenders close down attackers in the box area in training, but unfortunately the defenders didn't do well to defend. It only means we still have a lot of work to do,” he said. "However I must confess that the experience of several players, Sunday Mba, Godfrey Oboabona, Azubike Egwuekwe and even Gambo Mohammed who were at the Confederations Cup, paid off in this game." Kesh ...
agles Trounce Bombers 3-0 -Home-based Squad Settles In Kaduna The home-based Eagles went straight into action on arrival in Kaduna yesterday, as what was initially meant to be a training seeing in The City of Crocodiles turned to a test match against Bombers Football Academy. It was a 3-0 win for the Eagles in their encounter against the 15-year-old outfit, which parades some ex-stars in the Nigerian Premier League. Eagles Head Coach, Stephen Keshi started the game with his probable starting 11, apart from reliable central defender, safe for Godfrey Oboabona, who was rested as a result of knocks he received in training on Tuesday. In just under 50 seconds, Benjamin Francis' brilliant run was neatly converted by Sunday Mba, after a miss by Ebenezer Adefemi and it did not take too long for the second goal to come, this time from the right wing. Solomon Kwambe and Obinna Nwachukwu combined beautifully for big striker Gambo Mohammed to cooly slot in. This was in the fifth minute of play. After the second goal ...

A red flag for Nigeria.Stephen Keshi..must be tossed.. Namibia hold Nigeria to draw Nigeria failed on Wednesday to reach the final round of the 2014 World Cup qualifiers in Africa after a 1-1 draw in Namibia. The African Champions needed a win in Windhoek to take an unassailable four-point Group F lead with one game to spare. However, the Super Eagles had to settle for a point when Godfrey Oboabona equalized seven minutes from time at the Sam Nujoma Stadium. Deon Hotto Kavendji had put the Brave Warriors ahead on 77 minutes as they threatened to avenge a 1-0 loss in Calabar in June last year. A draw was a satisfactory result for Namibia, ranked 30 places below Nigeria in Africa by FIFA, given their chaotic build-up to the qualifier. Swede Roger Palmgren quit as coach on Monday after unspecified death threats, leaving assistants Ricardo Mannetti and Ronnie Kanolelo 48 hours to prepare. Nigeria have nine points after five rounds, Malawi seven, Namibia five and winless Kenya prop up the table with just thre ...

FOOTBALL:- Former Sunshine Stars manager, Gbenga Ogunbote, is relishing the expected debut of the club’s skipper, Godfrey Oboabona, at the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations. Super Eagles supremo, Stephen Keshi, gave Oboabona his international debut against Angola in 2012 and the central defender has since progressed in the set-up. The versatile Oboabona featured regularly as the Eagles qualified for the 2013 Afcon and is at present in Faro, Portugal, as the preparation for the competition continues. “I’m excited that Oboabona is headed for the Afcon. Yobo rates NPL stars high Joseph Yobo has hailed the players who are based at home like Gabriel Reuben and Ejike Uzoenyi for increasing competition in the Eagles. Yobo told MTNFootball.com, "Godfrey Oboabona, Azubuike Egwuekwe, Ejike Uzoenyi and Gabriel Reuben have shown class so far in the Eagles squad. They have brought a healthy competition to the national team." Yobo therefore expressed displeasure with reports in the local media credited to him that the home based players are not good enough. "I am shocked to hear such a report. I spoke to journalists at the FA secretariat and all said was that we need more time together for blending. If I say I am not disappointed, I would be lying,” he said. "I am the captain of this team and as a leader why should I run down my colleagues in public. They all know me, if am not happy about something, I would call the player and tell them" The former Everton of England defender added that Nigerians need not worry because the Eagles would make them proud, stressing ...
Can we imagine England manager Roy Hodgson in training wearing a SuperSport cap, or England winger Theo Walcott wearing national team apparel at Arsenal training pitch? Eagles coach Stephen Keshi wears SuperSport cap on national team apparel in training while his defender Godfrey Oboabona shows off his national team apparel at training with Sunshine FC Akure; even though he's team captain! It leaves one asking: why do we dress indiscipline in flowing garb? But let's not blame Keshi and Oboabona. Let's blame their employers who revel in sheer ignorance.
Captain Joseph Yobo ruled out ofNigeria’s June line up of matches The national team skipper will not be able to recover before the Super Eagles take on Namibia, Malawi and Rwanda next month.
