Raheem Lawal will replace Hope Akpan in the midfield with Ogenyi Onazi and Obi Mikel expected to hold middle against Ephraim Mashaba’s side. Onazi did not take part in Tuesday’s training exercise held at the main bowl of the Akwa Ibom Stadium with reasons for that not revealed. Eagles will welcome back Kenneth Omeruo into the starting line up as he will be replacing Godfrey Oboabona who is out of this encounter due to card offences. Emmanuel Emenike Vs Ikechukwu Uche: Who Should Start For Nigeria ? As the Super Eagles plan to battle the Congolese in a must win match tomorrow, who would be the better option upfront in attack for SE? The Villarreal forward has returned to the Super Eagles squad, but should he usurp the off-colour Fenerbahce man and start against Congo? Stephen Keshi has returned to the dug-out, but he may not be Nigeria's only comeback king for the double-header against the Republic of Congo and South Africa. After 25 games in the wilderness, Ikechukwu Uche has been named in the Super Eagles squad. The Villarreal hitman hasn't featured for the continental champions since the victorious Cup of Nations triumph over Burkina Faso in early 2013. The West Africans are desperate, however, and with star striker Emmanuel Emenike misfiring, Keshi might be tempted to recall Uche to the starting XI for the upcoming fixtures. Should the Big Boss return the veteran poacher (uche) to the first team, or should Emenike be allowed to co ...

Stephen Keshi Sacked By Nigeria Football Federation Nigeria on Thursday sacked Stephen Keshi as national team coach, despite home win against Sudan that kept them in the running to defend the African title. The Nigeria Football Federation said after an emergency meeting that former coach Shuaibu Amodu would take temporary charge before a foreign manager is appointed. The Super Eagles were rock bottom of Group A in qualifying for next year’s Africa Cup of Nations after winning just one point in three matches but a 3-1 win against Sudan in Abuja on Wednesday lifted them to third. Speculation about 52-year-old Keshi’s future has refused to go away since the end of the World Cup finals in Brazil in July, where Nigeria reached the knock-out stages of the competition. Keshi’s three-year deal ran out after the return from South America while he lost the support of players after much-publicised rows with the likes of Emmanuel Emenike, Peter Odemwingie and Ikechukwu Uche. His record of five defeats, five dra ...
Stephen Keshi for SA job, Emmanuel Emenike for Enyeama for big club, bla bla bla. Those rumours.
Stephen Keshi deserves credit The truth of the matter is that all pundits, bloggers and analysts of the beautiful game are just there to theorise and guess. The coaches and the players who do the job are the best placed to make comments, predictions and judgements. Say what you like, Stephen Keshi knows his job. He has been very successful at his job as Head Coach of the Nigerian national team. He has the stats to back up his achievements thus far. A solitary strike by Osaze Odemwigie, following some strong play down the right by the battering ram that is Emmanuel Emenike, was enough for Nigeria to beat Bosnia-Herzegovina. That win knocked out the European side from the group, gave Nigeria four points and broke Nigeria's record of no World Cup win since France '98. A favourable line call had denied Bosnia's Man City striker Edin Dzeko a clear goal but that was probably evened up when the same player clearly handled the ball as he controlled it and turned to take a shot in injury time. Keeper Vincent Enyea ...
Poor outing: Osaze failed to play to instruction says Keshi The no-love-lost relationship between Stephen Keshi and Stoke City wonder-boy Osaze Odemwingie that saw him nearly miss the World Cup is still very much in the team. Osaze had apologized to Keshi before he was recalled to the national team and to the World Cup but Keshi sacrificed Ike Uche, another red-hot Nigerian attacker who scores goals with eyes closed on charges of being ‘technically indisciplined”. And on a night that Keshi’s team were rudderless except for Osaze who brought vim and vitality to the attack, Keshi still threw potshots at Osaze for not playing to instructions. A journalist had complained about the blunt attack of the Eagles but singled out Osaze for bringing fire to the attack when Keshi bared his fangs on the Stoke City player. ‘’No. No, No. Osaze didn’t play well. What he played was not the role I asked him to play”, he said leaving many journalists bewildered. On a night that Emmanuel Emenike was a shadow of ...
unleashes killer squad on Iran, benches Osaze, Yobo By Bowale Odutola / June 16, 2014 Super Eagles’ boss, Stephen Keshi unleashed a deadly squad on the Persian Stars of Iran in this evening Brazil 2014 World Cup Group F tie at the Arena Da Baixada, Brazil. Lille of France safest pair of hands, Vincent Enyeama, will man the goal for the African Champions while Celtic of Scotland defender, Efe Ambrose, Juwon Oshaniwa, Godfrey Oboabona and Kenneth Omeruo will protect Nigeria’s goal area. Chelsea star, John Obi Mikel, is saddled with the responsibility of controlling the midfield and he will be supported by Lazio’s Ogenyi Onazi and Ramon Azeez. Meanwhile, the Big Boss opted for Victor Moses, Ahmed Musa and Emmanuel Emenike to attack for the Eagles. Stoke City’s goal poacher, Osaze Odemwingie, and the team’s skipper, Joseph Yobo, will start the game from the bench. The match kicks off at 8pm.
Mikel, Emenike Fight: Keshi, Ameobi Wade in By Emameh Gabriel John Obi Mikel and Emmanuel Emenike, both of whom are senior members of the Nigerian Super Eagles went for each other’s throats, two days to the World Cup. However, Head Coach of the team, Stephen Keshi had to play the role of a father in settling a dispute between Chelsea. Aside Keshi, Shola Amoebi, Newcastle forward and the oldest and most experienced among the players, also stepped in, advising his team mates to see need to remain united as the only strength and motivating factors that would guarantee their success in the tournament. The duo of Mikel and Emenike had a bust up following the 0-0 draw against Greece on Wednesday last week, but finally resolved to put the disagreement behind them for sake of the team and the country as they were seen shook hands and hug after a lengthy meeting initiated and chaired the team’s gaffer, Stephen Keshi. As revealed by a source, “Keshi had a family chat with the boys yesterday and in the meeting ...

NIGERIA'S Super Eagles kicked off their 2014 World Cup preparations yesterday with a 2-2 draw against Scotland in London in a game that offered Head Coach Stephen Keshi the opportunity to look at several fringe players. Playing in front of a near capacity crowd of about 20,156, the Eagles scored a last minute equaliser through Uche Nwofor to clinch a draw. Today, the team flies to the US where it will play two more friendlies against Greece and Team USA on June 3 and 7 respectively before heading to Brazil where it will face Algeria in its last warm-up game on June 11. For yesterday's game, coach Keshi did not even name seven regulars on the team list, indicating that their places on the plane to Brazil are already secure. Mikel Obi, Emmanuel Emenike, Vincent Enyeama, Obinna Nsofor, Ogenyi Onazi, Kenneth Omeruo and Ahmed Musa were not named on the team sheet and appear certain to be among the final 23. Returnee skipper Joseph Yobo skippered the team, showing glimpses of his old self, as did Osaze Odemwing ...
Osaze in keshi's 30 man squad Stoke striker Peter Odemwingie and Newcastle forward Shola Ameobi are in Nigeria's provisional 30-man World Cup squad for Brazil 2014. Odemwingie has been recalled to the Super Eagles after ending his feud with coach Stephen Keshi. The pair fell out after Odemwingie was omitted from Keshi's 2013 Africa Cup of Nations squad. Odemwingie, 32, last played for Nigeria in a goalless draw against Rwanda in February 2012. He told BBC Sport: "I made mistakes in the past but I've put all that behind me now. I thank the manager for this chance. "This is good for my career because I am in a better place right now. I just want to make my own contribution to the team and my country." Also handed a recall is Captain Joseph Yobo, 33, who has not played for Nigeria since they won the Africa Cup of Nations in South Africa last year. John Mikel Obi of Chelsea and Liverpool's Victor Moses lead a cast of 19 returning players from the Nations Cup squad despite both struggling for first-team footb ...
With less than three months to go until Nigeria’s opening World Cup game against Iran, a number of unanswered questions still exist for Stephen Keshi and his Super Eagles. I, along with many of you, had hoped that the recent international friendly against Mexico would answer some of the issues that linger around the squad and the Big Boss’s approach. Unfortunately, the friendly largely failed to elucidate the watching world on some of the enduring questions that Nigeria face ahead of the World Cup. In fact, it was more a case of “like a bathroom wall, the more you look, the more you see” as, rather than questions being answered, a whole new set of potential problems now swirl ahead of the trip to Brazil. So, KickOffNigeria would love to hear your suggestions on these issues and how you see each of these ‘questions’ panning out. Who Will Score the Goals? Okay, okay, so the immediate answer here should be apparent to everyone. Who will score Nigeria’s goals? Well, Emmanuel Emenike will, right? ...
Vincent Enyeama, John Mikel Obi and Emmanuel Emenike have been selected in Africa's Dream Team for 2013. And the coach is none other than Stephen Keshi! Go Super Eagles!
Nigeria coach Stephen Keshi acknowledges his troop’s sacrifice that hooked Super Eagles qualification for Fifa World Cup Brazil 2014 next summer. The African reigning champion coach just commended Emmanuel Emenike and co who just beat Ethiopia 4-1 on aggregate. “It wasn’t easy. Trying to qualify for
eyond the first round in Brazil The former Super Eagles striker believes that the national team can exceed expectations by making it out of the first round at the World Cup next year By Peter Davis Nov 11, 2013 6:20:00 AM EXCLUSIVE By Peter DavisGuangzhou R&F striker Yakubu Aiyegbeni is confident in the Super Eagles' chances of not just qualifying but getting past the group stages of the 2014 World Cup. “Nigeria will surely qualify for the World Cup and get to at least the second round in Brazil. “Winning the African Nations Cup, Stephen Keshi is doing very well with the national team,” the 30 year old said. The Super Eagles hold a 2-1 advantage after a first leg victory over Ethiopia where Emmanuel Emenike bagged an invaluable brace. pin:231B0D40»» •MGN-AFRICA» The Emenike Juggernaut: In a long time, the Super Eagles have not managed to have a striker that inspires fear in opposing defenders, not only by his sheer presence on the field but also by his ability to rise to the occasion when it is most crucial. But that seems to be changing now with the emergence of Emmanuel Emenike on the scene. Before Emenike appeared there were others who did their bit, but who ultimately didn’t capture the imagination of Nigerians for long enough. Emmanuel Emenike Julius Aghahowa was outstanding when he was the lynchpin of Eagles’ attack but injuries blighted his latter days, Victor Agali at some point was also touted as the next best thing but he only managed 12 matches in total for the national team. Too short a period to be consequential. Ikechukwu Uche was another player that showed promise, never failing to come to the party when needed, but his lot has since diminished, and under Coach Stephen Keshi, he has rarely shown any of his old f ...
We Won By God’s Grace – Onazi As reactions continue flowing round Sunday’s dramatic 2-1 victory of the Super Eagles away to Walya Antelopes of Ethiopia in a World Cup qualification play-off, one of the Nigerian players that made things happen during the encounter, Eddy Ogenyi Onazi has attributed the win to God’s grace on the side of the African Champions. Although several Nigerian soccer followers have easily given the victory to the heroics of Emmanuel Emenike, who struck two individual efforts behind the Antelopes’ goalkeeper to take the Eagles back from the brink of defeat, Onazi insists the turn-around came by virtue of divine intervention for the visiting side. The SS Lazio of Italy midfielder stressed that the victory at Addis Ababa National Stadium was due to divine intervention, not just the battling efforts of all the players or tactical ability of Eagles’ Head Coach, Stephen Keshi. The 20-year-old product of My People FC of Lagos, sponsored by Prophetic T.B. Joshua’s Synagogue Chu ...
Emenike edges Ethiopia, Emmanuel Emenike bagged a brace as Nigeria won 2-1 in Ethiopia in the first leg of their 2014 Fifa World Cup qualifying play-off. The Turkey-based striker equalised midway through the second half with a fierce shot and calmy converted a last-minute penalty in Addis Ababa. Ethiopia, the surprise side among the ten qualifiers for the play-offs, took the lead 11 minutes into the second half through Behailu Assefa. Nigeria host the return match on 16 November in Calabar and a draw will suffice to secure one of the five places in Brazil reserved for African sides. Ethiopia had more possession and opportunities during the opening half only to be let down by poor finishing at the Addis Ababa Stadium. Girma Adane was the chief culprit while Saladin Ahmed had appeals for a goal and a penalty rejected by the referee. Nigeria offered little going forward and the nerves of coach and former Super Eagles skipper Stephen Keshi showed as he constantly checked his watch. The home side favoured shor ...
Nigeria/Ethiopia: Keshi Calls Enyeama, Mikel Obi, 21 Others for Ethiopia Nigeria's Head Coach, Stephen Keshi has named a list of 23 players to battle for shirts ahead of the first leg of the 2014 Fifa World Cup final elimination fixture against Ethiopia's Walya Antelopes in Addis Ababa. Esuene Stadium, Calabar on Saturday, 16th November. Headlining the list are stand-in skipper Vincent Enyeama, England-based midfielders Mikel Obi and Victor Moses, and forwards Brown Ideye and Emmanuel Emenike. Keshi has called three goalkeepers, seven defenders, seven midfielders and six strikers as the Eagles aim for a win in Addis Ababa to make the second leg in Calabar a much easier session.

Yobo Gave Me Eagles Spot – Emenike -Wants National Team Skipper Back Fenerbahçe of Turkey striker, Emmanuel Emenike has come out with a startling revelation that Nigeria’s out-of-favour skipper, Joseph Yobo paved the way for his invitation to the Super Eagles. In a dramatic twist of events, while Yobo has been shut-out of the Eagles’ mainframe, on account of a fall-out with the Head Coach, Stephen Keshi, Emenike continues to wax strong and scored in back-to-back matches this outgoing week, against Malawi and Burkina Faso, in his return to the national team after a bout with injury since the African Cup of Nations semi-final in February. The former FC Cape Town of South Africa, Karabükspor of Turkey and Spartak Moscow of Russia attacker described Yobo as “a senior brother” and credits the former Everton of England defender for scouting him out for an invitation to the Eagles. Rather than appear like and ingrate and fail to put in a word for the one who paved his way into the Eagles, Emenike has ...
Nigeria coach Stephen Keshi has said the goal they conceded against Burkina Faso has warned his team ahead of next month’s World Cup playoffs. The Super Eagles on Tuesday let in a late goal to the mainly home-based team from Burkina Faso after they were coasting to a comfortable 4-0 win inside the Ahmadu Bello Stadium in Kaduna. “Conceding a goal at home could be very dangerous as regards our qualification because an away goal could be very damaging and so we will need to be very careful,” he said. “Sometimes it’s good this way because we have a point of reference and we will make corrections. “In the proper game, we have to be very cautious how we defend and how we play.” He said the friendly against Burkina Faso afforded him the chance to have a closer look at players like Shola Ameobi, Victor Nsofor and James Okwuosa, who are knocking *** the first-team door. “I gave some players the opportunity to play, I wanted to see more of Nsofor, Shola and James,” Keshi said. “It was not a ...

Nigeria, Ethiopia reach WCQ playoffs African champion Nigeria and surprise package Ethiopia reached the final playoffs for the World Cup after winning last-round group games on Saturday. Burkina Faso also kept its World Cup hopes alive by beating Gabon and overtaking Republic of Congo in the race to make the decisive 10-team ties starting next month. Five teams will eventually emerge from the playoffs in October and November to represent Africa in Brazil next year. Nigeria saw off Malawi 2-0 in Calabar through goals early in the second half from Emmanuel Emenike and Victor Moses, ending a tense standoff between the countries in the leadup to the game. Malawi coach Tom Saintfiet reported Nigeria rival Stephen Keshi to FIFA over alleged racist comments ahead of the winner-take-all Group F matchup. Ethiopia won 2-1 over Central African Republic in neutral Republic of Congo to qualify from Group A and eliminate 2010 World Cup host South Africa, which beat Botswana 4-1 in vain. Emmanuel Emenike returned to action on the pitch in a friendly tournament for Spartak Moscow against Shakhtar Donetsk on Sunday. The Nigerian forward who's has been missing through injury since April played the first half of the match that ended 0-0. Nigeria Super Eagles Head Coach, Stephen Keshi will be pleased that his main arrow head is fit again and will be hoping that the Nations Cup top scorer will keep in shape and injury free for the WCQ later in the year.
Nigeria coach Stephen Keshi says profligacy in front of goal was a big factor in his side’s exit from the Confederations Cup in Brazil. The African Champions finished next to bottom in their group after a 3-0 loss to Spain in their last game on Sunday. Prior to the defeat, Nigeria beat Tahiti 6-1 and lost 2-1 to Uruguay. “There’s so much anxiety in front of the goal-line when we get there. The good thing is we create chances, but we’re not finishing them,” said Keshi. “That’s something we need to work on. Hopefully it’s going to come quickly.” Nigeria needed to win Sunday’s game to stand any chance of squeezing into the semi-finals, but Spain took the honours through a pair of goals from left-back Jordi Alba and a Fernando Torres header. Nigeria had opportunities to get back into the match but Brown Ideye and substitute Muhammad Gambo both spurned good chances in the second half. Nigeria lost Victor Moses, Emmanuel Emenike and Ogenyi Onazi prior to the tournament, while Nnamdi Oduamadi ...
By JOHN MASTOROUDES: Let me start today by saying that based on what we saw in the 2013 Fifa Confederations Cup, the future is very bright for our dear Super Eagles. Our boys now play as a team which was not the case before. Now, the team is more organized from the defence to the attack. What we need for now is for all the players who are injured to get back into the team. We need Victor Moses and Emmanuel Emenike back in this team. Then there is the need to bring back Shola Ameobi and Victor AAnichebe. All these guys are goal-getters. It’s unfortunate that the technical crew failed to identify the weaknesses in the forward-line before traveling to the Confederations Cup with someone like Anthony Ujah who has little or no international exposure and experience. The Super Eagles’ attack is the weakest link at the moment because in other areas, we look solid. We also seem not to have a good replacement for Ogenyi Onazi in midfield. He could have added more firepower to our midfield. Stephen Keshi include ...
The Super Eagles defeated Tahiti 6-1 on Monday to record Nigeria's biggest score-line in a Fifa senior event but in the process produced a dismal and unprofessional attitude. Super Eagles NEED STRIKERS & FAST: We now know that the two people that made the attack of the Eagles tick at the AFCON in South Africa were Victor Moses & Emmanuel Emenike. Three times, Brown Ideye came face to face with the Tahiti keeper but on all three occasions, he was found wanting. The case of Anthony Ujah was another disappointment as he fluffed his lines, continuing on his display against Namibia last week. Seeing its too late to get any replacements for these two & not knowing why coach Stephen Keshi decided to pick Joseph Akpala over Ikechukwu Uche & Obafemi Martins - It will do the coaching crew a lot of good to start scouting for more potent finishers.
Let the dress rehearsal begin What do you think about Nigeria' performance against Tahiti, how far can they go? Here's what Richard Owubokiri saud in his blog: "Nigeria They are coming out stronger after the memorable Afcon victory. Coach Stephen Keshi is putting together fine players. He is doing a great job. I wonder about Emmanuel Emenike and Victor Moses and what difference their absence could make? Maybe this will help the team as it provides a platform for other youngsters to stake a claim. They may have been destabilised by the drama about slashed bonuses but once they play their first game against Tahiti and get a win, all that will be forgotten and they will enjoy the magic of playing on Brazilian soil. That is the dream of many African players who, like me, are captivated by the spirit of samba and the Brazilian flair. Stephen Keshi is my friend and former teammate and we used to be room-mates in the Super Eagles set-up. We still chat once in a while and it will be a good reunion and a chance t ...
This evening, the Super Eagles will seek to secure the vital three points against the Tahiti National Team to fancy their chances of progressing to the semis at the ongoing Confederations Cup in Brazil. Anything less than this will be like fetching the proverbial ant-infested firewood when they meet Uruguay and later on Spain. Unfortunately, many Nigerians will likely be watching their darling team courtesy of DSTV and the Ghanaian National Tv station (GTV), instead of either the unreliable NTA or inconsistent AIT that have always disappointed the sports fans of the world most populous black nation and the common man in the village. After a lack-luster performance against the Brave Warriors of Namibia last Wednesday in a Brazil 2014 World Cup Qualifier, many Nigerians are expecting the Coach Stephen Okechukwu Keshi's led team to make amends. But their is growing concern especially with unstable camp, bonus 'wahala' and notable absentees like Victor Moses, Emmanuel Emenike, Kalu Uche etc, due to injury. Th ...
* Odds stacked against Nigeria in the Confederations Cup * * By Gabriele Marcotti | Jun 16, 2013 1:06 PM RIO DE JANEIRO -- The fact that they play Tahiti in the opener is probably the last piece of good news Nigeria boss Stephen Keshi received -- and that was a while back. Since then, the Super Eagles have hit road bump after road bump, most of them not of his making. It began April 2, when Emmanuel Emenike was injured playing for Spartak Moscow against Anzhi Makhachkala. Two weeks later, Ruben Gabriel announced he was withdrawing from the Confederations Cup. A week after that, Kalu Uche and Victor Moses also raised the white flag. And on Friday, Ogenyi Onazi, who had suffered a knee injury during Nigeria's World Cup qualifier against Namibia the previous week, was also ruled out. To recap what this all means: Keshi is without his top goal scorer from the Cup of Nations in February (Emenike), an oversized midfield enforcer who was arguably the player of the year in Nigeria last season (Gabriel), a forward ...

Nigeria vs Burkina Faso(Match Report). Alain Traore grabbed a last-gasp equaliser to hand Burkina Faso an unlikely 1-1 draw with Nigeria at the AFCON on Monday. The midfielder, whose selection was a gamble because he was still injured when the squad was submitted, came off the bench to earn his side a morale-boosting share of the points when he converted a cut back from Jonathan Pitroipa. The stalemate followed a 1-1 draw between defending champions Zambia and Ethiopia in the earlier game at Nelspruit's Mbombela Stadium, meaning five of the six games so far at the tournament have ended in draws. It was a cruel lesson for Nigeria who let their domination of the game slip in the closing stages after full back Efe Ambrose was sent off in the 74th minute for a second booking. The Super Eagles paid the prize for squandering chances after Emmanuel Emenike had given them a 23rd-minute lead with a goal that demonstrated the strength of the three-man attack coach Stephen Keshi fielded. Emenike leads Eagles attack Emenike - His power will be crucial vs Burkina Faso Russia-based striker Emmanuel Emenike is set to lead the Eagles charge for goals against Burkina Faso Monday night in Nelspruit. Emenike is preferred to the prolific Ikechukwu Uche, who was the top scorer for Nigeria with three goals in the qualifying tournament for the 2013 AFCON. The Spartak Moscow centre forward has struggled to fire the goals in a green-and-white shirt since he made his long-awaited debut against Sierra Leone in Lagos in February 2011. However, coach Stephen Keshi rates him very highly, even tipping him to match the exploits of the country’s most prolific international striker the late Rashidi Yekini. His power will stand him in good stead against a very physical Burkina Faso, who go by the apt nickname of The Stallions. He is expected to now deliver with the help of the wing play of the tricky Chelsea star Victor Moses and the speed of Ahmed Musa, while Mikel marshals a midfield that also includes Fegor ...
NewsDay sport journalists predicts AFCON winners. Which NewsDay sports writer do you think will get it right? •WELLINGTON TONI SPORTS EDITOR NIGERIA — The Super Eagles have one of the best coaches on the continent and no one has really paid attention to progress made under Stephen Keshi.
