The Writings of George Washington from the Original Manuscript Sources, 1745-1799. John C. Fitzpatrick, Editor. George Washington to George Washington Snyder, September 25, 1798 [Note 7: Of Fredericktown (now Frederick), Md.] Mount Vernon, September 25, 1798. Sir: Many apologies are due to you, for my not acknowledging the receipt of your obliging favour of the 22d. Ulto, and for not thanking you, at an earlier period, for the Book8 you had the goodness to send me. [Note 8: Proofs of a Conspiracy &c, by John Robison.] I have heard much of the nefarious, and dangerous plan, and doctrines of the Illuminati, but never saw the Book until you were pleased to send it to me.9 The same causes which have prevented my acknowledging the receipt of your letter have prevented my reading the Book, hitherto; namely, the multiplicity of matters which pressed upon me before, and the debilitated state in which I was left after, a severe fever had been removed. And which allows me to add little more now, than thanks for you ...

Mandatory registration of existing rifles?? When politicians are on the right track they take their time to get things right. When they are trying to make huge changes and restrictions to peoples rights based on emotions because facts tell an inconvenient truth not aligned with their agenda, they need to rush like they are tonight. This is sickening.

Executive orders have been put into place that allow the president to declare martial law, suspend the constitution, and disallow the ability of Congress to review such actions for a period of six months. The reasons for declaring martial law no longer need to be defined. Orders have been put into place that not only severely limit our privacy, but remove other controls designed to protect us from abuse by our own government.

OK my fellow gun owners. What are your thoughts on universal backround checks? Backround checks for every gun sale. The idea would be to keep guns out of the hands of criminals and crazies. This would include all sales including gun shows. Possibly even private sales. I have always considered this as a possibility. I dont see the down side. Unlike the gun grabber " Law abiding gun owners have nothing to fear" line, I dont see a problem with this. Your thoughts?.
I will say one, and only one, thing regarding the incessant posts about the state of this country; regardless of which talking head is "running" our country, we are failing as a people. Discuss.
Water Birth?? I have done a ton of research and I have come to the conclusion that I am going to do and at-home water birth. This is my first pregnancy and my fiancé and I can't afford a midwife, also couldn't find one around our area to begin with and were thinking of having an unassisted birth. We were just wondering if there were any women out there who have done the same and would like to explain their story. I have watched many of these birthing processes and it is absolutely beautiful and so very empowering. Just looking to hear some experiences women have had in unassisted water birthing??? rp by~S

We Know You Can Read. So Can We. By Larry Cebula January 14, 2013 I am so excited to be at Big Annual Conference in my discipline! And now here I am at Session With Very Interesting Title. I have read books and articles by these women and men, so to have them all sitting together is a buffet of scholarly brilliance. And now the woman who is doing research on the very thing I am most interested in is about to give her presentation. This is going to be great! Wait. Why does she have all those papers? No need to panic. Most likely those are handouts, or at worst some notes. She wrote Really Awesome Book That Changed the Field, so she knows what she is doing. There, she is beginning. ... Oh, God, no. She is looking straight down and reading from her paper. I spent 10 hours on airplanes and all my professional-development money for this? Maybe she is just reading the introduction before she shifts to a more conversational presentation? ... No, she is forging into the second paragraph, reading the words out lou ...
*** Ryder) Choosing Your University... My wife our daughter and myself were visiting a prestigious university. During our tour our student guide pointed out the nationally ranked library and state-of-the-art science facilities. The guide told us that the professors were the best in the world. She also recommended applying early to improve chances for admission. “We get so many applicants,” she boasted, “because of the stature of the school.” After the tour, I asked our student guide, “So, why did you choose this school?” “Oh,” she replied matter-of-factly, “my boyfriend goes here.”... }:0)

City used the funds to save 20 jobs in the fiscal year 12 budget.
So, like many of you, I've been thinking a lot about the issue of firearms in our country. Many people that argue for the continuation of our lenient gun regulations say that the constitution, including their second amendment rights, must be protected. And, often, they justify the importance of the second amendment by citing some of our founding fathers who argued that we should be allowed to bear arms in order to protect ourselves from a tyrannical government. However, it seems to me that this argument is contradictory because our government is the most direct expression of our constitution. And what is tyranny anyway? Is it the abolition of slavery? Taxation of wealthy individuals at the same rate of the middle class? Desegregation of schools? Election of a president that 49% of the population didn't vote for? In the end, I think that what makes our constitution so special is that it uniquely well protects the rights that we Americans agree are inalienable--the right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of ...

And for the snopes fans out there... this will be a pretty piece of legislature if it passes. Short version is - You are a federal agent who wish to enforce a gun control law on a gun and ammunition which has never stepped across state bounds. Poof you are going to jail, going to be charged ... and are no longer a federal agent. Therefore you can not enforce the gun control law. Pretty short and concise if you ask me. To Note: Not saying I agree, not saying I disagree .. it's just going to be interesting to see this enforced if it passes.
On the plus side, I got three movies watched today! Now they can go back to the library when I do.

OBJ's BIRTHDATE? Acolytes of former Nigeria President, Olusegun Obasanjo, plan a two-day long birthday celebration for him despite not knowing his real date of birth.,The group will hold a series of events on January 18 and 19, at his presidential library in Abeokuta in Ogun State. As part of the event, former Ghana president John Kuffour will deliver a public lecture entitled, "Obasanjo in the eyes of history." the former president is also working hard to launch another international foundation to rival that of former US president Bill Clinton to revamp his badly battered international repution after he failed in a bid to stand for third term in office in 2006. President Goodluck Jonathan is recorded on the invitation card as the "guest of honor" in an event that is being viewed as a political gathering of Obasanjo loyalists, but sources close to Obasanjo said Jonathan has not responded to the invitation. Vice President Namadi Sambo has indicated he will attend. Bankrolling the event include some state g ...

CalVet Announces New Coalition to Support California Women Veterans SACRAMENTO – The California Department of Veterans Affairs (CalVet), California Commission on the Status of Women and Girls, and California State Library have formed a coalition to help women veterans connect to their state and federal benefits and the local veterans services available to them. A recent survey of the needs of California women veterans found that many programs available to veterans are unfamiliar to women and as a consequence go underutilized. The statewide survey of more than 900 women veterans, conducted by the California Research Bureau (CRB) of the State Library, is believed to be the first of its kind by any state. The survey was requested by CalVet and the Commission. Five briefs, highlighting data from the survey, are being released this week by CRB and indicate that California’s women veterans experience levels of unemployment, military sexual trauma and mental health concerns at rates higher than reported by n ...

You may already know about this but below is an email via the State Library about the relaunched Register of War Memorials. There’s potential for History students to participate: The Register of War Memorials website was relaunched on the 11th November. This register is a joint project between the Office for Veterans Affairs and the State Library. The project was launched around 10 years ago with the aim of creating an entry for every War Memorial in NSW and to list all the names on the memorials. The register has been created using only community generated content since the beginning. This crowd sourcing has seen the site grow to list 2,208 memorials and around 190,000 veterans names to date. The new site which was designed and created by the Online Information Services team includes expanded fields for collecting more information about the people who are commemorated on the memorials, geocoding and Google map interfaces and a forum for registered users to discuss and share information about the memori ...

Calling ALL Preachers, Pastors, Ministers, Men and women of the cloth... A consultant from the State Library (Dr. Burgin) will be at the library in Nov 15th. He will meet with a focus group from 6:00 – 8:00 that evening. I would like to ask local preachers/pastors/ministers... to attend this meeting. After all, who better understand the issues in our community? The purpose of the interviews is to ask key people in the community what they consider to be challenges in the county and what, if anything, the library can do to help address those challenges. He has already met with the Library Advisory Board, Friends of the Library, the Steering Committee, and several individuals. There are already several common themes being mentioned. Of course there are some things the library can’t do anything about (such as providing local jobs) and some we can (like offering more teen programs after school). Once the interviews and focus groups are complete, the Steering Committee will meet again to discuss the find ...

Really, AMC (and probably other movie theaters)? Frankenweenie is obviously a Halloween movie, and the closest theaters to Muncie you have it playing in on Halloween are in Richmond and Kokomo, with only one showing per theater? WHAT THE HECK?! Now I guess I have to fend for myself with the Ball State library, which doesn't even have classics like The Fly, Poltergeist, or The Omen (A FREAKING GREGORY PECK MOVIE!!!) First society tells me I'm too old to parade around the neighborhood in a costume and get candy. Then this year they happen to slap Halloween right in the middle of the freaking school week. But this is just too far! Play your freaking Halloween-themed movies at least through Halloween! It's just kinda common sense!!!

This young woman from the Bavarian city of Schweinfurt sent me artistic and intimate photographs of her bare breasts, torso and *** I am impressed not only by her beauty but also by her courage. I have written back to her, saying that I would be pleased to receive further such artistic photographs. I also said that if she ever wished to meet me personally for coffee or a meal together, I would be delighted to do so during my next holiday visit to Germany around May 2014.

At the Alamo in San Antonio, then called Bejar, 150 Texas rebels led by William Barret Travis made their stand against Santa Anna's vastly superior Mexican army. On the second day of the siege, February 24, 1836, Travis called for reinforcements with this heroic message:

I can't go to the next Marriage Equality Rally because, ironically, I will be at the wedding of 2 friends of mine who are in a *** relationship. Actually they are just in relationship; the label is only relative in the context I write. The wedding will be legitimate in the eyes of all who are there (& 65% of our population I believe), but not in the eyes of the law. I should share that these 2 friends recently became AMAZING parents for 2 little girls whose natural parents became legally ‘unfit’ to raise them. The fact that these girl’s natural parents are heterosexual, & that my friends willingness to take them into their home saves tax- payer money, points to an obvious hypocrisy. IF marriage becomes legal for *** couples soon, these girls might never grow up to learn about how we discriminate against their new parents—a strange message when my friends have brought nothing but love and stability into their lives & freed them from the disadvantage that too often leads to children becoming so- cal ...

The Rare Collections of the State Library of Pennsylvania contains work from the favorite printer of colonial Brethren, Christopher Saur known for the sign above his door, "For the Glory of God and my Neighbor's Good." He was Ben Franklin's rival. Franklin is known for printing "Heaven helps those who help themselves" complete with an illustration of Hercules in heaven with a war club, a milestone in the history of American comic strips. For some reason Ephrata Cloister chose Saur to print their music. Also in this collection is some of the work of Johnstown native Steve Ditko, the artist who with Stan Lee created Spiderman and Dr. Strange. "With great power comes great responsibilty." You said it Stan.

I had a nice day. We took our students to Citizenship Day at the State Capitol Complex. I was impressed by the resources and organization at this educational event for 8th Graders. It was a learning experience for me too. A student of mine answered all the questions and was knowledgeable about civics. It shocked me and I thought about how subjective expectations can be.I enjoyed the mock legislature by Hi-Y. I got some ideas. I love debate and I may have a way to do it for 8th Graders. As nice and educational as it was, why did I have a nice day? We didn't leave anyone at the Capitol! Mason County had a presence today; there were students from Wahama leading the mock legislature and a former PPMS student was the presenter at the WV State Library. Overall, I felt energized as a teacher.

Had a productive day yesterday at the State Library. Got there at 9:30AM and stayed until they were closing at 4:30PM. Had success on the most part at finding obituaries and articles on family. Found the sale bill for my Grandparent Johnson's auction that my great grandfather Sproul, who was the administrator, put in the Morland newspaper. Had quite a few cattle and horses to sell as well as some farm machinery. Found out the location of where they lived from the sale bill telling where the sale would be located. They sale was only a few weeks after my grandad Sumner passed away from being dragged by a horse(anyway I think that's what happened.) My grandma Jessie and the 3 small children moved to Edmond and then to Beloit, where my grandad's parents lived. Found some small obituaries which, I guess, is better than nothing and probably all they put in back then. Found some other articles in Beloit papers, but due to lack of time to copy, I will save them and go to the Beloit library sometime and look them ...

Kansas Governor Sam Brownback announced the top readers of the Read Kansas Read summer reading program. He and First Lady Mary Brownback hosted the students and their families for a picnic and celebration catered by Freddy’s Frozen Custard & Steakburgers at Cedar Crest on Saturday, August 18th. Read Kansas Read is a summer reading program launched last May by Governor Brownback, the Kansas State Board of Education and the State Library of Kansas. Students across Kansas spent the summer recording the books they read on their reading logs. On August 1st, more than 400 readers turned in their reading logs that listed more than 10,000 books read during the two month period. Two K-12 students from each of the ten State Board of Education districts who read the most number of books were invited to join the Governor and First Lady for the picnic. “What a great summer of reading we had in Kansas. Thanks to all of the students, parents and librarians across the state for taking part in our first summer reading ...

A couple of days ago a neighbor mentioned a fire in our house years ago that killed two men. I knew that there were at least two known fires in our house, one caused by a refrigerator and another a bit more vague but had some info. In doing history research of our 200-year old house I contacted a former tenant who recalls the incident but as a child. Today I went to the state library and looked over some permits and newspaper articles and came up with the facts. It happened on February 25, 1969. An unused gas line (gas light era) was improperly capped off and started leaking. One man lighted a cigarette and blew himself out the back window. The fire officials had another story yet was unsure saying that the men appeared to have tried to put the fire out but caught their own clothes on fire. One jumped through the window outside where a neighbor came to put him out. A woman visiting burned her hand putting the other out. The two men were burned over 90% of their body with one dying a couple days later and ...
