Cesc Fabregas opened the scoring from the penalty spot after Filipe Luis was brought down by Ricardo Esgaio inside the first ten minutes. Sporting clawed a goal back in the second half through Jonathan Silva, but John Obi Mikel restored the home side's advantage and secured all three points, while Schalke's victory over Maribor meant the Lisbon side did not qualify for the knockout stages of the competition. The Chelsea keeper could be allowed to leave Stamford Bridge in January, with AC Milan thought to be keen on securing his services Petr Cech could be heading for Italy after Arsene Wenger insisted Arsenal are not interested in a January deal. Chelsea keeper Cech, 32, could be allowed to leave Stamford Bridge after losing his place to Thibaut Courtois. That has alerted the Gunners who were keen on signing the keeper before he went to Chelsea and Wenger remains a big admirer. But when recent links to Cech and stories were put to him, Wenger snapped: "no" when asked whether there was any truth in Arsenal signing the Czech keeper. That could leave the door open for AC Milan to make a move for Cech who could command a fee of around £7m with 18 months left on his contract. Real Madrid, Paris Saint Germain and Monaco have all been linked with Cech who remains one of the best keepers in the world. But AC Milan are keen to get him in January and have made an enquiry with Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho currently insis ...

CECH: CHELSEA WILL DECIDE MY FUTURE The Czech international still has two years remaining on his current contract Chelsea goalkeeper Petr Cech has been under heavy speculation regarding his future at Stamford Bridge hence the return of Thibaut Courtois to the club. Courtois, who spent three seasons on loan at Spanish side Atletico Madrid, has removed Cech as Chelsea's first-choice keeper since returning to West London at the start of this campaign, starting in all the Blues' Premier League fixtures this season. The Belgian has also recently signed a new five-year contract at Chelsea, which has increased the chances of Cech making a move away from Stamford Bridge; with both PSG and Real Madrid highly interested in signing the 32-year-old. However, Cech has assured to the media that any decision regarding his future will be made by the club. "As concerns my future at Chelsea, it depends entirely on the club. Petr Cech has indicated that he will leave Chelsea if he remains as the club’s second-choice goalkeeper. The 32-year-old has featured only twice this season, with Jose Mourinho preferring Thibaut Courtois in both the Premier League and Champions League. Cech has been Chelsea’s first-choice goalkeeper for 10 seasons since his arrival from Rennes in 2004 and insists he is not prepared to stay on the bench at Stamford Bridge this term. "I have not spoken to anyone, but I think they know me well enough at the club to know that the situation is definitely not the way I would imagine,” Cech told Czech radio. “With the Euros [in 2016] and the national team in mind, there is no time for me to sit on the bench and not to play. “If the situation will not start to improve for me, then I will want to solve it."

Jose Mourinho hopes Petr Cech stays at Chelsea Jose Mourinho says he hopes Petr Cech will decide to stay at Chelsea despite losing his starting spot to Thibaut Courtois in the opening Premier League victory against Burnley. Cech watched from the bench at Turf Moor as Courtois took to the field. Chelsea went 1-0 down after Scott Arfield opened the scoring, but the Blues came through to win 3-1 in a dominant display. Courtois preferred Despite the reassuring display, the biggest story of the night was Courtois being chosen over Cech. Cech has been Chelsea's first choice goalkeeper for 10 years, but it appears Courtois, who is 10 years his younger, is going to be Mourinho's number one. Attention will now turn to whether Cech will leave Stamford Bridge. With wages of £100,000-a-week and Mourinho needed to shift a foreign player from his squad, the 32-year-old is favourite to be shoved out of the exit door. ith just two years left on Thibaut Courtois' contract, getting the Belgian goalkeeper extended has been a major priority for Chelsea this year. And boy, have we heard about it -- Courtois' future has dominated the transfer talk around the club for months. But there's an even more important Belgian at Stamford Bridge, and he only has three years on his deal. So while we knew that the club was working on a Courtois extension (which should go smoothly now that he's supplanted Petr Cech as the first- choice goalkeeper), it's very gratifying to hear that they're working on a similar deal with Eden Hazard. So says the Telegraph, at any rate: Other than trying to convince Courtois to sign a new contract, Chelsea are also in talks with Eden Hazard over extending his deal that runs until 2017. Hazard, unlike Courtois, is one of the highest-paid players at the club, and extending him would presumably take him up to truly stratospheric wages. But paradoxically, such a deal might actually save Chelsea money, at least ...

José Mourinho - Barcelona misused Cesc Fábregas but Chelsea won’t José Mourinho claimed Cesc Fábregas was misused by Barcelona and hailed his impressive Chelsea debut as confirmation of why the Former Arsenal captain was his first choice midfield target this summer. The £30m signing shone on his first Premier League start for Chelsea as Burnley were beaten 3-1 at Turf Moor with goals from his fellow debutant Diego Costa, Andre Schürrle and Branislav Ivanovic. Mourinho also gave a first Premier League start to the goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois at the expense of Petr Cech but denied the selection would lead to the 32-year-old’s departure from Stamford Bridge. Burnley had taken an early lead through Scott Arfield but, with Fábregas involved in all three Chelsea goals, including an exquisite pass for Schürrle’s second, Mourinho insisted the midfielder would give his team a new dimension this season. “The team played very well but I agree with Cesc being man of the match because he and [Nemanja] ...

Chelsea will tell Petr Cech to find a new club in the final weeks of the transfer window after deciding to make Thibaut Courtois their No.1 this season, Goal can reveal. Jose Mourinho is to put his faith in Courtois at the start of the campaign, spelling the end for Cech at Stamford Bridge following a decade spen as the club's undisputed first choice. Cech will be encouraged to move as Chelsea stand to receive a more significant transfer fee from selling the Czech goalkeeper now than in 12 months, when he would have just one year to ru on his contract. Courtois, who played 90 minutes in goal for the Blues in their final pre-season match on Tuesday night, will get the nod over Cech for Monday's Premier League curtain-raiser against newly promoted Burnley. Central defender Raphael Varane has been unhappy with his playing time and wages at Real Madrid, and a move to Chelsea could be in his future. Reuters As manager Jose Mourinho said earlier this week, possessing two of the best goalkeepers in the world in Petr Cech and Thibaut Courtois is a good problem for Chelsea to have heading into the new Premier League term. The Great One meant it more from a competition standpoint, with the Czech and 10-year Stamford Bridge netminder and budding Belgian 22-year-old pushing each other to greater heights. But now Mourinho’s phrasing has taken on new meaning, with the Blues leveraging the position battle into a possible deal for a young, top-flight defender. Mourinho has been enamored with Real Madrid central defender Raphael Varane well before he brought the French international to the Bernabeu in 2011, and now he could facilitate a move to London with Los Blancos keen on acquiring the 32-year-old Cech for their coming La Liga and Champions League runs, The Express ...
Petr Cech is ready to take up the challenge of competing with Thibaut Courtois for the position of Chelsea's number one goalkeeper, manager Jose Mourinho said on Thursday. Belgian international Courtois, 22, has returned to his parent club following a long-term loan spell with La Liga champions Atletico Madrid and will battle with the Czech keeper for the starting role at Stamford Bridge. Cech, 32, who has been Chelsea's number one for the past decade, is back from the dislocated shoulder he suffered in May and has featured in the pre-season games. "Petr is working hard, he recovered in almost record time from his surgery and he's ready to fight for his position," Mourinho told Sky Sports television.

A long-term link to Stamford Bridge, the 27-year-old Uruguay international joining Jose Mourinho's side would be dependent on a number of factors, not least Chelsea's need to comply with UEFA regulations. Apart from already having exceeded the quota for foreign players over the age of 21 by one -- with Didier Drogba taking them to 18 -- the London club are also increasingly conscious of financial fair play. It is expected that Czech goalkeeper Petr Cech could move on, however, and that any purchase of Cavani would finally see the long-mooted sale of Fernando Torres. Furthermore, the departure of Romelu Lukaku to Everton brought in 28 million pounds, freeing up more funds. Sources told ESPN FC that Chelsea have been quoted a price of 40 million pounds by PSG for Cavani, and that the player is eager to move to Stamford Bridge -- despite a public declaration that he would prefer to stay in France. There has already been preliminary contact between the London club and the player's camp, although Chelsea are s ...
Mikel may be thrown out of Chelsea Jose Mourinho openly admitted that John Obi Mikel could end his stay at Chelsea FC. The Special One does not have enough squad place for foreigners so either him or other foreign players can be forced out of the club. After signing Dider Drogba the number of foreigners exceed the capacity of abroad players in Chelsea by one so that Mourinho will have to offload one of the players that couldn’t make it to the teams English Premier League squad anyway. John Obi Mikel, Petr Cech and Fernando Torres are among the figures linked with a move away from the English contenders but the weakest link among the three is undoubtedly Obi Mikel. “From the group you are expecting us to have as a squad, I have to send one away because we have one extra foreign player. “So from all these players, if you think all of them have to stay, you are wrong. One of them has to go,” Mourinho said. Despite playing over 200 matches for Chelsea FC Mikel’s time seems to have run out at Stamfor ...

What Does The Future Hold For John Terry? Captain. Leader. Legend. Thibaut Courtois is set to return to his parent club and deservedly get his chance at Stamford Bridge. With all respect I have for Petr Cech, I think Thibaut improved a lot and is ready to be our first choice next season. When it comes to defence, I think Jose should think about saving the same backline quatro next season as they all were stable during the whole campaign. Branislav Ivanovic is safe, he's always performing and will be in plans for the next season. Gary Cahill and John Terry forms one of the world's best centre-back partnership, always stable and have strong understanding, which was maybe the main thing behind our great defensive record. Cech will have to consider options Keeper is facing the axe by Mourinho Chelsea are ready to make current on loan Atletico Madrid keeper, Thibaut Courtois first choice at Stamford Bridge, at the expense of long-serving Petr Cech. I hope Frank Lampard, Petr Cech, can play until retire in Stamford Bridge and become coach in future.
Okay it wasn`t the best ever end- of-season lap of honour carried out by the players at Stamford Bridge on Sunday, following the 0-0 draw with Norwich City, but did it contain a poignant moment? At one stage an official club photographer took a picture of the following quartet - Petr Cech, John Terry, Frank Lampard and Ashley Cole. Now three of those four are out of contract this summer, whilst the fourth; could see his first team place under threat from Thibaut Courtois. Now whilst Jose Mourinho may intimate that he`s confident the trio of Terry, Lampard and Cole will stay did the tears shed by Ashley Cole suggest otherwise? Out of the three who find their contracts up this summer, I`d suggest Ashley Cole is the most likely to go, followed by Frank Lampard and then John Terry. Cole has shown, in the past fortnight, he still has what it takes to operate at the top level and at his age knows he needs regular first team football, something he`s not has under Mourinho in recent weeks. Lampard has had offers ...

Chelsea goalkeeper Petr Cech has told Sky Sports he is fit to play against Atletico Madrid at Stamford Bridge on...
The very attractive Dr Eva Carneiro (Google her), team doctor of Chelsea FC, is clearly a miracle worker and therefore a possible candidate for canonisation. She appears to have brought Petr Cech and John Terry back, if not from the dead, from season ending injuries to be fit to face Athletico Madrid at Stamford Bridge tomorrow. Methinks some more Mourinho magic as well.
SUMMARY OF MATCH REPORT: CHELSEA 1 SUNDERLAND 2 Fabio Borini's 81st-minute penalty consigned us to our maiden league defeat at Stamford Bridge under Jose Mourinho. It was the Portuguese's 78th Premier League game in charge of Chelsea at our home ground. Not only does the loss signal the end of that astonishing run, it also gives Liverpool a huge advantage in the race for the title. We started brightly and took the lead through a Samuel Eto'o volley but our visitors hit back soon after through Connor Wickham after Mark Schwarzer, standing in for the ill Petr Cech, couldn't hold Marcos Alonso's volley. Branislav Ivanovic hit the bar before the interval and Eto'o, Demba Ba and Fernando Torres went close after it but it was Sunderland who returned home with the points after Cesar Azpilicueta felled substitute Jozy Altidore and Borini, on loan from Liverpool, converted with ease. Unlike so often before when we have faced an uphill task at this stadium there was no late reprieve and it was left to Mourinho to c ...
Chelsea 6-0 Arsenal : Mourinho shows Wenger the true master Chelsea produced yet another masterclass performance disgracing Arsenal with a convincing 6-0 victory at Stamford Bridge. If there was any man who knows how to beat Arsene Wenger,it is Jose Mourinho and what a way to do it by spoiling his 1000th games party. In a week that the red carpets were rolled out at the Emirates to celebrate the achievements of Wenger since joining the club in 1996,his big adversary,Mourinho came to once again burst his bubble. Just like they did against Liverpool,Arsenal started the game going two goals behind in the first ten minutes of the match. Olivier Giroud had a magnificent opportunity of putting his side in front but he didn't get much power to his shot as Petr Cech got his hand to the ball to divert out from goal. Almost immediately at the other end of the pitch in a quick counter,Chelsea showed Giroud how to take your chance. Andre Schurrle looked up and saw Samuel Eto'o in space, playing in the Cameroonian who ...

What We Learned: An Away Goal, The Only Positive By hnkhan89 • February 27, 2014 BhblI1tCUAA56CV Chelsea settled for a 1-1 draw at the Turk Telekom Arena as an early Torres goal was cancelled out by Aurelien Chedjou’s 65th minute equalizer leaving the tie firmly in the balance and all to play for in the 2nd leg at Stamford Bridge. Chelsea started the game better of the two sides and created chances early on and in the 9th minute grabbed the vital away goal courtesy Fernando Torres’ cool finish from Cesar Azpilicueta’s cut back. Chelsea had opportunities to extend the lead but failed to capitalize. Roberto Mancini made a change as early as the 30th minute to create stability at the back and it worked. In the second half Galatasaray looked a different side and took the game to Chelsea, and scored from the corner courtesy Aurelien Chedjou who took advantage of a misunderstanding between Petr Cech and John Terry. Jose sensing a comeback threw in Obi Mikel to calm the nerves and very much settled for . ...
European Football saw some tense moments as well... In Turkey, visitors' Manager ' The Special One' said in the Press Conference that a team of Azpilicueats would clinch the trophy. The Spaniard prodigy reciprocated well with an assist to the prolific striker Fernando Torres on the 10th Minute. It was pretty tense in the Turk telecom Arena as two of the Galatasaray players, Drogba and Sneijder had been part of Jose Mourinho's camp earlier in their career and they had openly showed their gratitude towards the 'Special One'. Right after the whistle, Turkish attack sprung to the Chelsea half, which they endured thanks to robust defence and rock solid goalie, Petr Cech. Finally, the Cameroon defender Chedjou leveled the score for the home team. The audience erupted in joy. Now all eyes are on the Stamford bridge for the 2nd leg. Let's see who holds their nerve and edges out the adversary.
Neither skipper John Terry, who was rarely troubled by former team-mate Drogba on his reunion with the Blues, nor goalkeeper Petr Cech dealt with Wesley Sneijder's left-wing corner, allowing Chedjou to arrive unattended and convert from inside the six-yard box. How costly that slip proves to Chelsea will be determined in the return leg at Stamford Bridge on 18 March.
Chelsea v West Ham players ratings by West London sport It was a frustrating night for Chelsea at Stamford Bridge, where West Ham defended resolutely to deny them an eighth consecutive win. Here’s how we rated the Blues players in the 0-0 draw. Petr Cech: 7 Didn’t have much to do but produced an important save to keep out James’ Tomkins’ first-half header. Branislav Ivanovic: 7 As determined as ever. He also showed his versatility, both when continuing to bomb forward despite not looking completely comfortable doing so and then when switched to a more defensive role after a second-half reshuffle. Gary Cahill: 8 Calm and composed despite the wet conditions and the physical presence of Andy Carroll. The defender is in excellent form at the moment. John Terry: 7 Also played well at the back. Unlucky not to score with a first-half header from Willian’s corner. Cesar Azpilicueta: 6 Uninspiring but solid enough at left-back before being taken off when boss Jose Mourinho opted for a formation change in ...
Chelsea goalkeeper Petr Cech has been impressed with the progress of in-form forward Willian. The Brazilian arrived at Stamford Bridge from Anzhi Makhachkala in August for £30m and appeared to struggle in the early stage of his Chelsea career. But Willian has improved greatly in recent weeks with impressive performances in the wins over Liverpool and Southampton, where he came off the bench to help the Blues to a 3-0 victory. Willian's form has been so good that two-time player of the season Juan Mata has become a bit-part player this term, and Cech is confident there is more to come from the South American. Cech said: "Yes. You always give players a few months to settle because the Premier League is different to anywhere else. "Questions were raised because he came from Anzhi Makhachkala where he was unlucky with injuries and he didn't play much. "But from day one he has worked really hard. He was waiting for his chance and since the first start you can see he is taking his opportunity. "He has been abs ...
Chelsea 4-4 Aston Villa (2007/08) When Aston Villa came calling on Boxing Day, Avram Grant had been in the Chelsea hotseat for just over three months after Jose Mourinho departed Stamford Bridge under a cloud. It was to be a memorable day for the visitors who had won at Stamford Bridge just four times before in the Premier League era. Shaun Maloney reacted quickest to a John Carew knock-down to put the visitors ahead before Petr Cech let a drive from the Scottish winger slip through his grasp before the interval. Andriy Shevchenko pulled one back for the visitors from the spot after Zat Knight had seen red. The Ukrainian had scored two league goals in the season before the match, but doubled his tally for the campaign with a spectacular effort which flew past Scott Carson. Chelsea’s No7 then put Alex through, with the defender skipping past a Villa challenge before slamming home to give Chelsea the lead after the hour mark. The drama had not finished there though, with Martin Laursen levelling the game ...
Chelsea need striker Romelu Lukaku and goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois back at Stamford Bridge, according to player- turned-pundit Jamie Redknapp. "Chelsea need surgery," Redknapp wrote in his latest Mail Online column . "Jose Mourinho has to get a striker in the transfer window, but that won’t be easy. He can’t keep relying on Frank Lampard and Eden Hazard to get him out of trouble. "A striker has not scored away from home in 19 Premier League matches, for the entire calendar year. That’s not good enough from Fernando Torres, Samuel Eto’o and Demba Ba. It makes you wonder even more why he allowed Romelu Lukaku to leave on loan. "But conceding six goals in two games at Sunderland and Stoke is unacceptable, too. That’s now one clean sheet in 10. Petr Cech looks uncertain. Thibaut Courtois, on loan at Atletico Madrid, looks more and more the long-term future, although they can’t get him back until the summer. That is two Belgians on loan whom Chelsea need back sharpish." ~RJ
Basle 1 Chelsea 0: Champions League match report 26 November 2013 22:04 Basle 1 Chelsea 0: Salah nets at the death... but Mourinho's men still scrape through to knockout stage PUBLISHED: 21:36 GMT, 26 November 2013 | UPDATED: 22:31 GMT, 26 November 2013 The clock above his goal said 10.30pm when Petr Cech was finally beaten. Just as Stamford Bridge it was Mohamed Salah who did it, racing clear behind Branislav Ivanovic to clip a shot over the diving goalkeeper. It was harsh on Cech but Basle had been the better team in St Jakob-Park and deserved the win given to them four minutes from time. The defeat will not live long in the memory. In fact, like Jose Mourinho's new haircut, the best thing that can be said is that in two months it will probably be forgotten. At the death: Mohamed Salah netted against a poor Chelsea side to boost Basle's qualification hopes Heads down: But Branislav Ivanovic, John Terry and John Obi Mikel (left-right) are still through Not good enough: Terry and his Chelsea team-mates lo ...
GOOD MORNING FOOTBALL FANS!! Here are today's headlines: Manchester City plan to buy a new defender in January. Manuel Pellegrini's side have struggled without injured captain Vincent Kompany in recent weeks. Chelsea midfielder Ramires, 26, says he has little interest in a proposed transfer to Real Madrid. Borussia Dortmund are still keen on signing Manchester City striker Edin Dzeko, 27, but do not want to spend more than £15m in replacing Bayern Munich-bound forward Robert Lewandowski. Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich has been so impressed by Thibaut Courtois’ growth and consistent performances that he is makes sure the keeper remains at Stamford Bridge for many years to come. However, Courtois has continuously stated that he has no interest in moving back to London to warm the bench for Petr Cech and went on loan to Atletico Madrid for the third season for two reasons; to guarantee his spot in the 2014 World Cup and because he had unfinished business at Atleti, the club he feels is his home. Carlos Gu ...
Cech: My fault for howler Chelsea goalkeeper Petr Cech said he only had himself to blame after his howler gifted West Brom a goal in Saturday's dramatic 2-2 draw at Stamford Bridge. Stephane Sessegnon had made it 2-1 to Albion when the ball squirmed through Cech's grasp and into the net. And, although Eden Hazard converted a controversial late penalty to rescue a point, the experienced Czech Republic shot-stopper feels the Blues would have won if he had not lost his footing at such a key moment in the match. "There was no indication of us not winning," Cech told his personal website. "However, shortly after the interval we conceded a cheap goal from a corner. "Then we let them go 2-1 up because of my mistake. I lost my footing on the pitch and then I failed to react to the shot properly. It was a cheap goal to concede. "One point is better than nothing, but that doesn't change the fact that we should have won and put the advantage of playing at home to good use."
A brace from Samuel Eto'o guided Chelsea to a second straight 3-0 victory against  FC Schalke 04, in a clinical performance at Stamford Bridge.     After a disappointing 2-0 defeat to Newcastle United on Saturday, Jose Mourinho's side looked to bounce back and take control of Group E, making six changes in their starting line-up. Eden Hazard was the most notable absentee from the entire squad, after being unable to participate in a training session.    Schalke, looking to make up for a comprehensive 3-0 defeat in the reverse fixture two weeks ago, started quickly, coming close twice in the first five minutes. Julian Draxler, one of Europe's hottest footballing properties, dragged a shot just wide of Petr Cech's goal, with Hungarian striker Adam Szalai doing the same a minute later.   Spurred on a raucous set of away fans, the Bundesliga side pressed high up the field and disturbed Chelsea's game-plan. It took the home team 20 minutes to create a shot on target: A free-kick taken by Andre Schurrle - ...
Champions League Round Up; Schalke 04 0 - 3 Chelsea Scorer: Torres 5' 68' Hazard 87' A Fernando Torres double saw Chelsea seize control of Champions League Group E with a 3-0 victory over Schalke at the Veltins Arena in Gelsenkirchen. Chelsea were playing on German turf for the 1st time since winning the 2012 European Cup in Munich and, as then, for large parts of the game had to absorb the pressure applied by their German opponents. On his 100th Chelsea start Torres netted his 38th and 39th goals for the Blues - hitting the bar in between - to take his tally for the season to 4. Eden Hazard scored a breakaway 3rd 3 minutes from time as Jose Mourinho's men joined Schalke on 6 points, moving ahead of their rivals on head to head record ahead of the 6th November clash at Stamford Bridge. Torres put Chelsea in front with a 5th minute header, but the visitors were firmly on the back foot during the rest of the 1st half. Only some marginal offside calls and a spectacular save from Petr Cech to deny Roman Neus ...
Chelsea V Fulham-Match Preview: Friday 20 September 2013 £50m striker Fernando Torres could be set to start up front for Chelsea after the player didn’t even make the match-day squad for Chelsea’s Champions League defeat to Basle on Wednesday. Fulham striker Darren Bent is still suffering with an injury, so Dimitar Berbatov is set to start as Fulham’s only striker at Stamford Bridge. Jose Mourinho comes into the game on the back of two straight defeats, but has never lost a Premier League home game as Chelsea manager. 200 - Petr Cech is making his 200th appearance for at Stamford Bridge, all as a starter.
Farewell to four Blues Chelsea said goodbye to four players this week when the contracts of Paulo Ferreira, Florent Malouda, Ross Turnbull and Yossi Benayoun expired. Popular veteran Ferreira spent nine years with the Blues, after joining the club as a European champion from Porto in 2004. More silverware soon followed for the Portuguese full-back, winning the first of his three Premier League titles in his debut season. Malouda also claimed his fair share of medals during six years at Stamford Bridge, with his finest campaign arguably coming in 2009/10, when he helped us win our first domestic Double and was voted as Chelsea Players' Player of the Year. Goalkeeper Turnbull spent most of his time as Petr Cech's deputy, playing 19 games and being named on the bench for our successful Champions League and Europa League finals. Israeli international Benayoun's three years as a Blue were hindered by injury, but he returned from loan to make several appearances in the second half of last season. Marko Marin, T ...
Transfer news: Petr Cech can see Wayne Rooney in a Chelsea shirt Chelsea keeper Petr Cech would welcome Wayne Rooney to Stamford Bridge if the ManchesterUnited ace decided to switch. Rooney is being linked with the Blues, Arsenal and Paris St Germain after former United boss Sir Alex Ferguson claimed after hislast home game in charge in May that the striker had asked to leaveOld Trafford for a second time. Cech believes Rooney is a 'fantastic player' and would be a quality addition to the squad if new Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho wanted him in his plans. He told Sky Sports News: "I could see him in a Chelsea shirt. Players can change shirts and obviously he had a fantastic career with Manchester United and sometimes players need new challenges. "Sometimes the consequences arethe way that you are looking for the new challenge and change of the shirt
Paulo Ferreira, Yossi Benayoun, Florent Malouda and Ross Turnbull have been released by Chelsea after their contracts expired, the club have confirmed. Ferreira made 217 appearances in nine years with the Blues, playing a role in three Premier League title wins and the Champions League triumph of 2012. Benayoun arrived in the summer of 2010 as the replacement for Joe Cole but failed to command a regular place in the side, suffering with injuries and spending time on loan with Arsenal and West Ham. Malouda was lured from then-French champions Lyon in 2007 and won domestic and European honours at Stamford Bridge, but spent last season in exile training with the reserves. Turnbull was signed from Middlesbrough in 2009 as a backup goalkeeper to Petr Cech, and made just 19 appearances in four years in West London.
Chelsea: Mourinho's five worst signings Chelsea opinion: A look back at Jose Mourinho's worst buys from his first spell at Stamford Bridge The return of Jose Mourinho to Stamford Bridge has evoked memories of the great team he built during his first reign as he added the likes of Ricardo Carvalho, Petr Cech and Didier Drogba to a team already containing John Terry, Frank Lampard and Claude Makelele. However, these impressive signings have shrouded some of Mourinho's poorer dealings in the transfer market. Here is a list containing five of the the worst. 1. Andriy Shevchenko Former Ukraine captain and AC Milan legend Shevchenko was brought to the Bridge in 2006 for a hefty sum of around £30million. However, the striker failed to produce the form that led to him being awarded the Ballon d'Or in 2004, scoring a measly 22 goals in 77 appearances. Whether the signing was made by Mourinho is questionable - Shevchenko's friendship with chairman Roman Abramovich and Mourinho's initial reluctance to play him sugg ...
Paper Round: Arsenal in shock Fernando Torres move Fernando Torres could make a shock move from Chelsea to Arsenal, according to a report in the Sunday People. The story claims that new Chelsea Jose Mourinho only sees five players in his squad as indispensable and is ready to listen to offers for the rest. That, says the People, is bad news for anyone not named Petr Cech, Ashley Cole, Frank Lampard, Eden Hazard or Oscar. And Arsenal are ready to end Torres's largely miserable time at Stamford Bridge - he would probably command something in the £15-20m range, having cost Chelsea £50m in 2011. If the Spaniard moves across London, he will probably be joined by Gonzalo Higuain, who has seemingly been on the verge of completing a move from Real Madrid for weeks. The delay over confirmation of the Higuain has led to much gallows humour among Arsenal fans desperate to see the club come good on their promise of a summer spending spree. The Sunday Mirror reports on Arsene Wenger's pursuit of a third striker, Way ...
Schurrle delighted to finally seal his £18m move to Chelsea and becomes Jose's first signing (Submitted by Sports Journalist) CHELSEA have completed the signing of German international Andre Schurrle from Bayer Leverkusen for £18million. The 22-year-old winger has signed a five-year-deal and will wear the No 14 shirt at Stamford Bridge. 'I am so happy now I have signed and it is an honour for me to play for this club, with this team and for these great fans,' Schurrle said. 'I am really looking forward to it.' 'We have a great team with some very talented young players. We can all improve ourselves, and under Jose Mourinho I'm confident we can have a really great season. 'For this club, winning titles is always the main objective. We have a great young team with so much quality. 'We are capable of doing well in the Premier League, Champions League and the cup competitions as well, and I hope to play a big part.' Schurrle, who can also play as a striker, is noted for his ability to score spectacularly fr ...
A deep look into Chelsea's number 1 Petr Cech's Career: At the age of just 19 he broke the record for longest time without conceding a goal in Czech league history, stretching his run to 855 minutes. His fine form quickly attracted interest from the likes of Arsenal, though due to problems obtaining a work permit he instead joined French Ligue 1 side Rennes. He only remained with them for two seasons before moving to Chelsea for £7million as one of the early major signings by Roman Abramovich. Cech was the club’s most expensive goalkeeper of all time when he moved to Stamford Bridge, and was immediately made number one by manager Jose Mourinho, keeping out the more experienced and established Carlo Cudicini. His first season with the club was fantastic, as he formed part of a rock-solid Chelsea defence that only conceded 15 goals on the way to winning the Premier League title. During this run he also went a record 1025 minutes without conceding in the league, though this record has since been eclipsed ...
Goal-keeper:- Petr Cech- The Great Cech has been a living legend and Jose Mourinho will surely give him the number one shirt once again as they go for 5 trophies. Even after the head injuries, Cech has been consistent on the world’s top 5 goalies. He will surely be Jose’s number one name on the team sheet. Left Back:- Ashley Cole (another Chelsea living legend), one of the best left back in world football. The 103 winning caps for England have surely proven that the Ash still has life in him. He will be José Mourinho’s preferred left back. Right Back:- Cesar AzpilicuetaCesar Azpilicueta is developing very well and certainly was a bargain buy for Chelsea. He’d play as a preferred right back for Chelsea. He would match well with speed and cross accuracy for that long ball needed for Lukaku and Cavani. Center Back:- Sergio Ramos (interested in joining Jose at Stamford Bridge)- he has made it public that he wants to follow Jose in the Premier League and would surely form a solid defence partne . ...
Trio of coaches accompany Mourinho to Stamford Bridge. There have been some changes in the backroom staff following the appointment of Jose Mourinho as Chelsea manager. The Special One has brought along Rui Faria, Silvino Louro and Jose Morais to Stamford Bridge, and for all but Morais it's their second spell at the club. Steve Holland, Chris Jones and Christophe Lollichon are all holdovers from the previous regime(s). That Lollichon is still around to serve as Petr Cech's personal coach is interesting, considering that Louro has been brought on -- Chelsea will have two goalkeeping coaches next season, which is an unusual arrangement. Otherwise, things are pretty standard. Faria's a fitness coach whose work I'm nowhere near qualified to comment on, and Morais is the man who replaced former Blues boss Andre Villas-Boas as Mourinho's head of opponent scouting, and if his work is anything like the calibre of Villas-Boas when he was in charge of that particular operation, we have a good one on our hands. None ...
Did Chelsea released Ross Turnbull? Various reports claim that Chelsea have released goal keeper Ross Turnbull, however there has been no official statement from the club regarding this matter.Meanwhile the PFA have confirmed that Ross Turnbull is a free agent. This rumour has created a popular belief among Chelsea fans that, ‘Jose Mourinho, who is expected to take charge at Stamford Bridge wanted to bring young goal keeper Thibaut Courtois from Atletico Madrid, so as he can emerge as a suited replacement for Petr Cech. The 28-year-old,Ross Turnbull joined Chelsea back in 2009 from Middlesbrough as a free agent. His current contract will expire at the end of June and there has been no indication from the Blues that might offer a new contract to Turnbull. Ross Turnbull was never a popular figure at Stamford Bridge and he has managed only 19 appearances for Chelsea senior squad. Turnbull was not included in the squad during Chelsea’s USA tour and Jamal Blackman was the third choice after Cech and veteran ...
Steaua Bucharest will take a lead to Stamford Bridge after Raul Rusescu's first-half penalty gave the Romanian side a slender 1-0 victory over Chelsea in the Europa League. Ryan Bertrand's clumsy challenge on Rusescu gave the referee no choice but to point to the spot - and Rusescu drilled the spot-kick under Petr Cech. Chelsea improved after the second half introduction of Juan Mata, with Eden Hazard and Marko Marin each going close late on. Click link to read full story...
Petr Cech "Roberto Di Matteo and Jose Mourinho have earned the right to have their names heard at Stamford Bridge." [B.P]
Chelsea's home truths are telling, says Petr Cech after improved display It was fitting that the most difficult save Petr Cech had to make came late on from an inadvertent header by César Azpilicueta. These days Chelsea tend to be their own worst enemies. But Cech, who tipped his team-mate's misguided clearance over the bar to ensure they clung on for a deserved victory, says the club are coming together to ensure they do not sabotage their season. That, he explains, means everyone must be allowed to tell home truths. The vigorous exchanges that took place between players and staff at Chelsea's training ground last week are not, claims Cech, evidence of a club in turmoil but rather one with a healthy craving for success. For the Czech, who has won three Premier League titles, four FA Cups and a European Cup since arriving at Stamford Bridge in 2004, anyone so fragile as to be destroyed by constructive criticism has no chance of being champion. "We had a lot of success thanks to the honesty and open mind ...
Fans were behind us and left happy, says Cech after muted Benitez backlash Petr Cech is so focused on his job as a goalkeeper that the atmosphere is something of an irrelevance, but he was pleased the Chelsea support left Stamford Bridge content following the 1-0 defeat of West Brom yesterday. Much of the focus was on Rafael Benitez after the Spaniard had hit out at his title of 'interim manager' and criticised the fans for using their energies to insult him, rather than support the team, in mid-week. Perhaps the Blues faithful heeded the message of former Liverpool boss Benitez because - although there were messages for him on banners, chants for his predecessors Roberto Di Matteo and Jose Mourinho and vitriol hurled in the Spaniard's direction - there was plenty of encouragement for the players too. 'I'm so focused on the game that I hardly understand what the people sing or shout or what they do,' Cech told Chelsea TV. 'The main point is the people were here, the stadium was full, they were behind us, ...

Lampard keeps the pressure up on Chelsea board Frank Lampard was once again the star of the show as Chelsea saw off Wigan to end a run of four games without a win. The Blues seemed to have the game sewn up early in the second half when Eden Hazard fired home Cesar Azpilicueta’s cut back to make it 2-0 after a sweeping move had seen Ramires slot home in the first period. Two goal leads have been something of kryptonite for Chelsea recently however, and the more cynical inside Stamford Bridge probably feared the worst when Shaun Maloney beat the offside trap and rounded Petr Cech haul Wigan back into the game.
Late strikes ease Chelsea past Wigan AFP Sunday, February 10, 2013 - 17:55 Football - Premier League Premier League, Stamford Bridge – Chelsea 4 (Ramires 23, Hazard 56, Lampard 87, Marin 90+2) Wigan 1 (Maloney 58) Chelsea held their nerve to bag under-pressure manager Rafa Benitez a crucial 4-1 win over Wigan at Stamford Bridge in the Premier League. Having built themselves into a good position after Ramires rounded off a slick move midway through the first half, and Eden Hazard added a second, panic once again threatened to set in. Shaun Maloney immediately hit back after rounding Petr Cech and finishing from out wide, and Wigan went out in pursuit of an equaliser. They had their moments, but an 87th-minute strike from Frank Lampard, drilled low beyond Ali Al-Habsi, finally settled the contest, and substitute Marko Marin nodded in a rebound in injury time to add further gloss to the scoreline. The score was unflattering to the Latics, but it might have been still worse had it not been for a brilliant d ...
EPL- MATCH REPORT: Chelsea 4-1 Wigan: Chelsea laboured to an ultimately convincing win over relegation-threatened Wigan at Stamford Bridge on Saturday, being eased over the line by a trademark Frank Lampard strike to claim the three points and move back ahead of Tottenham into third place. A livelier Fernando Torres, who replaced Demba Ba in the starting XI, showed good awareness to play Ramires in on goal for Chelsea's opener, before Eden Hazard displayed a cool head to drill the Blues into a two-goal lead following enterprising build-up by Cesar Azpilicueta. A poorly timed offside trap - Gary Cahill the culprit - allowed Shaun Maloney to scamper through and finish beyond Petr Cech but Rafa Benitez's team rallied and finished the job courtesy of Lampard and a late Marko Marin header.
PRE-MATCH BRIEFING: CHELSEA V WIGAN ATHLETIC It is third from top against third from bottom as Stamford Bridge hosts a game after four on the road for the Blues. Club historian Rick Glanvill and club statistician Paul Dutton look closely at this weekend's league fixture… TALKING POINTS Three wins in 10 games is not the Chelsea way and while it may be a challenge to improve with so many regular starters absent through injury or international commitments, improve we must. Any points dropped now could allow Tottenham, at home to Newcastle, to overtake. When the latest players injured are Petr Cech and Demba Ba one wonders whether some sorcerer has a set of voodoo dolls and is sticking pins in the most influential players. Both pulled out of their international matches this week although their availability for the weekend is not yet known. Wigan's lengthy casualty list may shorten ahead of their journey south this weekend while Chelsea welcome Eden Hazard back after suspension. No win was managed in his thr ...
Chelsea are facing a battle to hang on to Thibaut Courtois after Atletico Madrid made it clear they want him for at least another seasonand are ready to offer him a permanent move to the Vicente Calderon in the summer. CECH AND COURTOIS: A CONUDRUM There are problems, and there are so-called ‘first world problems’. You know the drill; which latest technological advancement to purchase, what to do when your wireless internet drops for five seconds, that sort of thing. At Chelsea Football Club, they too face decisions of this nature now and then, and chief amongst them is what to do about their goalkeeping situation. They’re blessed to find themselves in the luxurious position of having a legendary veteran incumbent in Petr Cech, and a world-class youngster in Thibaut Courtois ready to step in and ensure that the gloves are well worn for the best part of the next twenty years. By acting swiftly and astutely in the summer of 2010, the Blues have created a pipeline which is doubtless the envy of clubs worldwide. However, despite the obvious benefits of having a ready-made replacement on their books, the powers that be at Stamford Bridge must manage the coming months and years very delicately to ensure that they take m ...

Match Report: CHELSEA 2-1 ARSENAL Stamford Bridge is smiling once again after two first-half goals proved enough to win this London derby against an Arsenal side who came back strongly after the interval. Juan Mata continued his run of scoring in every game he has started against Arsenal, netting early on, and Frank Lampard was yet again reliable from the penalty spot to double the advantage with quarter-of-an-hour gone of a game played in light snow throughout. Chelsea continued to play well upto the break but couldn't make the most of our chances. When Arsenal increased the tempo of their play after the break, our grip on the game slackened and Theo Walcott pulled a goal back. The Gunners continued to look the better side but it was more a case of pressure on the Blues defence than clear=cut chances, and Petr Cech was only occasionally called into action as our backline stood firm to secure all three points.
I would say that Stamford Bridge has this toxic atmosphere and it has been bubbling up for several years. The tipping point was of course the sacking of Roberto Di Matteo and the appointment of Rafa.” –Chelsea season ticket holder Seb O’Mahoney. Yes, Chelsea fans feel disconnected and alienated from the club. It feels like the club has lost its soul. Stamford Bridge was once a fortress and easily one of the toughest places to play. Any team coming to the Bridge only hoped avoiding defeat at best. Now however, all the teams coming to the bridge believe they can get all three points. Can you blame them? On Wednesday and before the game, Petr Cech was presented with the 400 appearances award, great achievement for a Chelsea great. The man presenting him the award was Chelsea Chairman Bruce Buck, who was jeered by the Stamford Bridge faithful. Why? Simply because Chelsea fans feel Buck and CEO Gourlay are not doing a good job in advising Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich. Bruce Buck and Ron Gourlay are sup ...
Chelsea fans groups have warned of a "toxic" atmosphere at Stamford Bridge following Wednesday's 2-0 Capital One Cup semi-final first leg defeat to Swansea City during which there were recriminations between fellow supporters over the booing of Fernando Torres. In one of the most extraordinary scenes of mass hostility from a home crowd towards their club and manager, the evening started with boos for chairman Bruce Buck when he was introduced on the pitch to make a pre-match presentation to injured goalkeeper Petr Cech. Following that, there was the usual hostility directed at Rafa Benitez which reached a new intensity towards the end of the game but there was also the first signs of mass discontentment with £50m striker Torres which was given voice when he was substituted in the 81st minute for Demba Ba, whose introduction to the game the home support had chanted for during much of the second half. Also contributing to the fraught atmosphere was the discontent over the club's refusal to offer Frank Lamp ...

Everton suffer first defeat on home pitch this season in the tenth match in front of his fans. Chelsea in the match of the 20th round have won 2-1 at Liverpool … Three points and victory for Chelsea has secured Frank Lampard, a legendary player of the club from Stamford Bridge, for whom recently there are a lot of talks that the club does not to extend a loyalty to him. Lampard’s two goals turned a head start of Everton in the match, as the hosts took a lead 1-0 by Steven Pienaar goal already in the second minute. The match was open to the end with a lot of chances on both sides, but ultimately goals of Lampard have ruled : first he scored on Ramires assists, and second goal after a “pinball” in Everton´s penalty area. With this victory,Chelsea again get close to Manchester City on four points. Let us say, that in this match Chelsea goalkeeper, Petr Cech, due to an ankle injury has stayed in the locker room at halftime. Match Highlights : Everton – Chelsea 1-2 (Pienaar 2 / Lampard 42, 72)

Chelsea travel to Turin on Monday for a crucial Champions League tie with their season in the balance after a 2-1 defeat at West Bromwich Albion on Saturday prompted a furious dressing-room inquest. Roberto Di Matteo will lead his squad to Italy for Tuesday night’s game against Juventus considering wholesale changes, including potentially dropping striker Fernando Torres and adopting a more defensive approach, as Chelsea seek the draw that will keep their defence of the Champions League alive. Defeat at the Hawthorns extended Chelsea’s winless league streak to four matches, with just two points from 12 since the fateful home defeat to Manchester United that ended in accusations of racial abuse against referee Mark Clattenburg. It is a run of results that will trouble the club’s hierarchy and pressure on the manager will intensify if they do not return from Turin with at least a point. Five days later they host Manchester City at Stamford Bridge and another defeat would increase tensions. Wit ...

Chelsea Captain John Terry has suffered "no significant damage" to his right knee after being injured in the 1-1 draw with Liverpool on Sunday. The 31-year-old is expected to be out for "weeks rather than months," the club added. He had a scan on suspected ligament damage on Monday amid fears he faced a lengthy spell out of action. Terry scored on his return from a four-match ban but was carried off after an accidental collision with Luis Suarez. Terry's goal came in the 20th minute but a collision with the Liverpool striker on 39 minutes forced him to be carried off on a stretcher. He later left Stamford Bridge on crutches with his right knee in a brace. "Today's MRI scans on John Terry's right knee thankfully show no significant damage to the cruciate ligaments," read a Chelsea statement. "Chelsea Football Club's medical team will conduct further tests over the next two or three days once the swelling has subsided to determine how long John will be out, but it will be a matter of weeks not months." Chelsea Manager Talking Nonsense November 1, 2012 70 Comments An incorrect match-defining decision was witnessed at Stamford Bridge on Sunday which likely had a huge impact on the result. Whilst Chelsea resorted to playing the likes of Petr Cech, Juan Mata, David Luiz, John Obi Mikel, Oscar, Eden Hazard and Ramires, United played a team of second string players and youth. In fact, the only player to remain from Sunday’s first choice line up was Rafael Da Silva. “We wanted to show that Sunday’s game was really heavily influenced by the officials,” Roberto Di Matteo said after the game. Chelsea will begin the process of developing Petr Cech's replacement as Stamford Bridge number one next summer!
Capital Cup joy for Chelsea Chelsea came from behind to reach the last eight of the Capital One Cup with a pulsating 5-4 extra-time victory over Manchester United at Stamford Bridge. Just four days after suffering their first Premier League defeat of the season at the hands of the same opposition - when the Reds edged a five-goal thriller - the Blues enjoyed a measure of revenge following another goalfest in West London. However, the Blues had to come from behind three times and needed a last- gasp Eden Hazard penalty to take the match into overtime. United were gifted an opening goal on 21 minutes when Oriol Romeu was robbed by Anderson who set up Ryan Giggs to fire a low curling left foot strike beyond the reach of keeper Petr Cech. Yet the Blues were level from the penalty spot eight minutes later: Alexander Buttner tripped Victor Moses and David Luiz smashed the ball into the bottom left-hand corner of the net although keeper Anders Lindegaard managed to get a hand on it. Javier Hernandez was at his p ...

Man Utd's Robin Van Persie fires the first Warning Shot at Stamford Bridge, his 25-yard effort flying into the midriff of Petr Cech.
Chelsea v Manchester United (1600) Love or loathe him, when Sir Alex Ferguson speaks, you listen. "I can't understand our defending," he said after his side beat Braga 3-2 on Tuesday. "I can't get to the bottom of it. We certainly make it difficult for ourselves. If you analyse the goals we are conceding they are all different types." So, the greatest manager of the modern era has a problem he can't fix. Cue the sound of alarm bells ahead of Sunday's trip to Chelsea. Of course, not everything is rosy at Stamford Bridge either, with their own midweek performance arguably a season's worst effort, albeit against a highly skilled and long-unbeaten Shakhtar side. As such, this is fascinatingly poised and Petr Cech, a man whose job it is to prevent goals, reckons Sunday will provide plenty. Who'd bet against that? As we wrote in our Champions League preview, when this modern Chelsea take on a good side, both teams tend to find the net and at 4/6 many will bank on that trend continuing. As for United, it's well- ...

Chelsea survive Reading scare Chelsea survived an almighty scare to beat promoted Reading 4-2 in a topsy-turvy Premier League clash at Stamford Bridge. The European champions appeared to be cruising when Frank Lampard converted an 18th-minute penalty to cap a dominant early spell for the hosts. But a Pavel Pogrebnyak header - his first goal for the club - levelled on 25 minutes, with the Championship champions edging ahead soon afterwards when a blunder from Petr Cech allowed Danny Guthrie to open his Reading account. Chelsea were struggling and looked bereft of ideas but, after a smart tactical switch by Roberto Di Matteo midway through the second half, they drew level when another goalkeeping error from Adam Federici saw Gary Cahill net from distance. The West London side then took the lead in controversial circumstances with 10 minutes remaining when an offside-looking Fernando Torres tapped in Ashley Cole's low cross after a lovely passing move. Chelsea goalkeeper Petr Cech signs a new four-year contract which will see him at Stamford Bridge until 2016.
This season's edition of the Champions League was one of the most unpredictable in recent history, as Chelsea fought against the odds to claim their first-ever trophy in Europe's elite tournament, and Goal.com looks back at the outstanding players from 2011-12. Starting between the posts, it was Petr Cech who saved the Blues on numerous occasions, most notably in the semi-finals as the Premier League side proved too stubborn to break down for favourites Barcelona. The Czech denied Messi and Co. over two legs as Roberto Di Matteo's team held on to reach the final. The goalkeeper impressed in the final as well as he denied Arjen Robben from the spot in extra time before coming up big in the penalty shootout to help his team to the trophy. At right-back, few were as effective as Bayern Munich captain Philipp Lahm. Chelsea happy birth day cech petr Petr Cech arrived in 2004 for £7 million, more than all the past goalkeepers in Chelsea history combined, with the task of challenging established number one Carlo Cudicini. He immediately caught the eye with his height, incredible reaction speed and confidence in leaving his goal-line and began his Chelsea career as Jose Mourinho's first choice. He had to be good to keep Cudicini out. A clean-sheet laden first season at Stamford Bridge was statistically the most accomplished by any Chelsea keeper - a run of 1,024 minutes without conceding a goal between December and March set a new English top flight record. By the end of that season he had his first championship medal plus records for the fewest goals conceded and most clean sheets in an English top-flight season, recognised with the award of the Barclays Golden Gloves for 2004/05. Though the 2005/06 version of the Chelsea defence was never quite as watertight as the season before, Petr continued to excel and was a maj ...
Chelsea's date with destiny: the occasion when their Roman empire can finally achieve its aim. Comrade Abramovich fell in love with football when famously watching a Champions League match and everything since arriving at Stamford Bridge has been aimed at the lifting of that famously oversized trophy, the European Cup. He has been within an inch of the post, a slip of Luzhniki sod, and for a time that had looked like his last chance. An ever-revolving cast-list of coaches has been and gone since John Terry's moment of truth in Moscow. Since then, the players who took them to the brink of a dream becoming reality have aged and agued. This was supposed to be a season of rebuilding. A young coach with new ideas was hired to sweep out the old guard. Yet they remain, and Andre Villas-Boas is jobless, only recently reappearing as a possible suitor for the vacant Liverpool position. Frank Lampard, Didier Drogba, Ashley Cole and Petr Cech take their place, but the suspended Terry will not, as penance for his stup ...
PAPISS DEMBA CISSE'S GOAL VOTED GOAL OF THE SEASON.. Yet his second on the night defied such logic. It defied any logic. It did not just bend the rules of physics, it smashed them. In fact, the theories of Isaac Newton might have been vastly different had he been at Stamford Bridge on May 2, 2012, instead of sitting under an apple tree in 17th-century England. One swing of pure talent brought about a goal which fans, commentators and 21 of the players on the pitch had not seen coming two seconds prior; a beauty which arced over a helpless Petr Cech and into the far corner. The swerve still does not look right on replays, but it gave birth to the type of finish that would have fans of any club standing and applauding-by Papiss Cisse
Amidst the chaos that followed Chelsea’s 2-1 victory over Liverpool in the FA Cup final at Wembley, one moment of brilliance had seemingly been forgotten. Papiss Cisse says his goal came at the perfect moment. A stunning double from Papiss Cisse kept Newcastle in the hunt for a Champions League berth with a 2-0 win at Stamford Bridge. The Magpies striker found the net in each half to keep the visitors level on points with fourth-placed Tottenham and all but end Chelsea's hopes of qualifying for Europe's elite via the Premier League. The Blues were quickest out of the blocks and Meireles missed a couple of early chances which the hosts paid dearly for on 19 minutes. David Santon went on a surging run before playing in Cisse, and the Senegalese teed himself up with his first touch to fire a stunning volley past Petr Cech. It took until the 36th minute before the Blues mustered a response with Florent Malouda heading wide from a pinpoint Fernando Torres cross. Long before the young man turned Stamford Bridge into his own personal theatre this week, Jose Mourinho knew all about Leo Messi. In 2003 the floppy-haired 16-year-old made his first senior appearance for Barcelona on the night the Catalan squad travelled to Porto, where they provided the opposition at the ceremonial opening of the spectacular new Dragao Stadium. Mourinho, who had just led the Portuguese club to the first of two consecutive league championships, received at close quarters a glimpse of a talent that would come back to plague him. And it only takes a glimpse to see what makes Messi so remarkable. He may look like the missing fifth member of the Monkees but, as with all great players, his signature is in his silhouette and his movement. Even when he stands still, he is leaning forward. His head is always up, like a gun dog on the scent. He covers the ground fast, a low centre of gravity making him hard to knock off the ball, angling his runs to take him towards goal by the shortest route. On ...
