Rome in a Day Some people actually try to “do” Rome in a day. Crazy as that sounds, if all you have is a day, it’s one of the most exciting days Europe has to offer. Start at 8:30 at the Colosseum. Then explore the Forum, hike over Capitoline Hill, and cap your “Caesar Shuffle” with a visit to the Pantheon. After a quick lunch, taxi to the Vatican Museum (the lines usually die down mid-afternoon, or you can reserve a visit online in advance). See the Vatican Museum, then St. Peter’s Basilica (open until 19:00 April–Sept). Taxi back to Campo de’ Fiori for dinner. Finish your day lacing together all the famous floodlit spots. Note: This busy plan is possible only if you ace the line-avoidance tricks outlined in my Rome guidebook. Rome in Two to Three Days On the first day, do the “Caesar Shuffle” from the Colosseum to the Forum, then over Capitoline Hill to the Pantheon. After a siesta, join the locals strolling from Piazza del Popolo to the Spanish Steps. On the second day, see Vatican ...

Hi. Many friends have asked me 'how do you do it' but when your WHY is big enough you just do. My WHY is my gorgeous family. I have always had a passion for travel having left home at age 17 to live in Norway as a Rotary Exchange Student. It later became my career. My husband Matty Anderson served in the NZ Navy for 20 years and had sailed to many countries far and wide. After five years of saving for our dream trip, we travelled around the world in 80 days (72 to be precise) with our two children aged four and one years old. It was such an amazing experience that we wanted to do it again.you see, travelling with kids is like a playground with too many rides. You just can't go on them all especially when children don't play ball! We missed out on the Louvre, the Spanish Steps and even the romantic Trevi Fountain at night. 'We have to go back without children' my husband declared. Well, these days the brood don't leave home until age 20 so we'd be knocking on 60 years old, sipping sherry and pushing a zimm ...

Amazing day! Tour of the Vatican this AM. Highlights including seeing Rafael's "School of Athens," the Sistine Chapel, and a bonus unscheduled visit to the Vatican grottos, where we saw tombs of many Popes, including Saint Peter's tomb! This afternoon we visited the Coloseum (where we saw WWE wrestler HHH and his wife Strphanie on a private tour) and Roman Forum, then continued with walking tours of Pantheon, Trevie Fountain, and Spanish Steps. All topped off with a large and run Italian dinner in.a local bistro. Florence tomorrow.
Tonight's episode of The Amazing Race happened like this. The five remaining teams flew from Zurich, Switzerland to Seville, Spain. Once they got there, teams had to take a taxi to L Alameda. La Alameda is known as a statue of both Hercules and Julius Caesar. Once they got the clue, teams had to travel to the Malado Peluqueros for the Road Block. The Road Block was one person had to imitate the Barber of Seville. What it meant was that the person had to shave off a balloon, which was covered in shaving cream. The person had to remove all of the shaving cream in one minute to receive their next clue. Then the teams had to travel to the Real Alcazar. The task found at the Real Alcazar was either Spanish Steps or Running of the Balls. In Spanish Steps, teams have to travel Museo del Baile Flamenco. They have to learn on how to do the Flamenco, once they have chosen a instructor. Then they have to perform it, and they complete it correctly, the teams will get their next clue. In running of the balls, teams ha ...

Apart from Christmas, Easter is the most important date in the Italian year. It is celebrated as a religious and family occasion in much the same way that American families celebrate Thanksgiving. Easter is a favorite time to visit Italy. Shop windows dressed with ribbons and bows and glitter, delicious smells of roast lamb wafting through the doors and open windows of restaurants, the first outdoor dining tables of the year, and azaleas on the Spanish Steps ... what could be better? Good Friday is the most solemn day of the whole of Holy Week in Italy - in fact probably of the whole year. But Good Friday in Italy is nevertheless an amazing and emotional experience - whether or not you're religious. Easter, or Pasqua in Italian, is a festive holiday throughout Italy. Religious parades and celebrations are held in many towns and cities nationwide. A statue of Jesus or his mother Mary is carried in street processions that involve large crowds of people. Easter meals vary, but include eggs, Easter pie, and l ...

Mary and I just returned form a Wonderful Trip - Italy. While there we did the following: Toured the Colosseum and Roman Form, Monument to Victor Emmaneual II, the Pantheon and the Famous Trevi Fountain (yes we did throw three coins in the fountain), and the Spanish Steps. Attended Mass in St. Peter's Bascilca (Mass was in Latin), con-celebrated by about 25 priests, 6 Msgrs, 8 Bishops and 6 Cardinals. Then toured the Vatican Museum, Sistine Chapel and at St Peter's saw the body of Pope John XXIII. Then saw Pope Francis deliver his weekly speech. Assisi - Toured the Basilica of St Francis, where we saw the tomb of St Francis (gave me the chills). Toured a winery - wine tasting of white and red wines with a wonderful Lunch. Siena - a very hilly town, most building built in the 12th and 13th century. In the Basilica is the Preserved head of St Catherine of Siena. She died in 1380. ”See Rome and die." How many of you have heard this expression I wonder? A good number of you would be my educated guess, right? (For the English poet John Keats this well-known adage rather tragically came true, as it did for all those brutally martyred Christians. The house where Shelley died by the way is located just to the right of the Spanish Steps and is now a museum. The Christians themselves, of course, left behind some amazing catacombs on the Appian Way and elsewhere (because they were often forced to extreme methods to hide their religious beliefs) as well as the incredible array of treasures in the magnificent edifices that they built in the city dedicated to their faith.) Well, in reality it actually appears that the correct Italian proverb is "See Naples (Napoli) and die." The idea is that Naples has everything, and when you've visited it you have really lived life to the full; there is nothing more to experience. The saying dates from when Naples was more of a national and cultural centr ...

I am considering another trip later this year, but I certainly will not be touring with Globus. Having done three back to back trips in 2013 I will never travel with this group again. They advertise a premium service and charge accordingly. However they deliver a very poor standard tour, particularly if you travel alone. This company charges a significant fee as a "single supplement". The only justification for this fee is to pay the accommodation component of the trip. But the accommodation for singles was often tiny rooms of very poor standard. Often they were converted spaces, that were more suited as storage rooms and broom cupboards. Globus advertises "Free WIFI on all our coaches{" but in 47 days there was 4 hours of WIFI and then it was browsing only, no downloads. Tour hotels were often well out of the City centres, with no arrangements to get into the city for free time. This applied in Rome, Paris and many other places. With few exceptions they struggled to be three star hotels; a long way below ...

As is traditional in Rome, Pope Francis yesterday went to the Spanish Steps to honor Mary on the feast of the Immaculate Conception. Read about it here:
Rome was as wonderful as I had hoped it would be. From it's magnificently adorned churches, to the most simple and cozy cafes, Italy's grandest city sits perched among an ancient history held firmly in place by it's marble pillars of power, love, and horrific tragedy. Yet the dichotomy found in this beautiful country, represented between both the ancient and the new, has the social structure of a banana republic, but continues somehow to thrive. Italy now has the fifth biggest economy in the world, which is a simply staggering achievement in the face of such chronic disorder. If the Italians had the work ethic of the Japanese they could be masters of the planet. Instead they are too busy expending their considerable energies on the pleasurable minutiae of daily life ---on children, on good food, on arguing in cafes, -which is just how it should be. We walked through the gardens of the Villa Borghese, up and down the Spanish Steps, window-shopped along the Via dei Condotti, admired the Colosseum and F ...
Pope Francis PRAYS FOR THE POOR IN THE HEART OF THE SHOPPING DISTRICT IN ROME As Rome's Christmas shopping season officially kicked off on December 8, Pope Francis paid a personal visit to Via Condotti, a street in the heart of the shopping district lined with luxurious stores like Dior, Armani, Prada, Louis Vuitton, and Cartier. He prayed aloud in front of a statue of Mary for people to "never be left indifferent to the cries of the poor," reports The Washington Post. December 8 marks a church holiday honoring Mary, mother of Jesus, known as Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception and it is a papal tradition to offer a public prayer on this day. He lived up to his reputation as the People's Pope, sitting with his chauffeur in the front seat of his Ford Focus as he drove from the Vatican to Rome's Spanish Steps, to pray in front of the statue of Our Lady Of The Immaculate Conception, reports La Stampa. He prayed that Mary would help everyone "to remain listening, attentively to the voice of the Lord," so t ...

Pope Francis' ANGELUS MESSAGE 8th December, Vatican City. “ The Immaculate Conception of Mary is inscribed in God’s plan; it is the fruit of God’s love which saves the world.” Tens of thousands of people took part, on the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception on 8th December for the Angelus of Pope Francis. Today we have started the TRIDUUM of prayers and meditations in preparation for the SOLEMNITY OF THE Immaculate Conception OF THE Blessed Virgin Mary. What does this mystery of our faith situated in Marian dimension signify for us modern Christians? In the Philippines, December 8 being a sunday of Advent, we shall celebrate this solemn MARIAN feast on Monday, December 9. Here in Rome, the Holy Father will still hold it on Sunday, culminated in the evening with the traditional crowning of the statue of the Immaculate Conception which stands on a tall, tall PILLAR at Piazza Spagna {famous Spanish Steps of Rome} It is interesting that the Church on the top most platform of these Spanish Steps is called La Chiesa ai Trinita dei Monti. It is as if it wants to state that the BLESSED TRINITY who is the author of the grandest and most surprising MYSTERY OF CATHOLIC FAITH - the Incarnation of the only Begotten Son, the Word-made-flesh, the Almighty One dwelling among sinners, OVERSEES the execution of this great d ...
Crazy things that happened to me yesterday 1. Did not sleep for 37 hours 2. Ran around Rome and saw the coliseum, the Vatican and sat on the Spanish steps 3. Got upgraded to first class on our flight from Rome to Budapest and enjoyed an amazing meal and Italian wine. 4. Chased down a man in Rome who tried to steal Danny's backpack (it was sitting in Elliot's stroller) and when I caught him, he gave it back to me and said he was sorry (yes I'm that intimidating!)
***TOP TEN FILMS SHOT IN ROME*** While some of the following ten movies may not be the best or most important filmed on the streets of Rome, they are among the best-known to an international audience, and all have Roman sites as their backdrop. **Roman Holiday This classic 1953 romantic comedy follows a bored and sheltered princess who, after escaping her guardians to see Rome for herself, meets and falls in love with American reporter Joe Bradley, played by Gregory Peck. Audrey Hepburn won an Academy Award for Best Actress for her role as the crown princess in the movie, much of which was filmed on Via Margutta near the Spanish Steps. The film launched the young Hepburn as a major international star. Her character was originally written with Elizabeth Taylor in mind but the part was offered to Hepburn after a chance occurrence during her screen test. The camera was left rolling after she gave a subdued performance, capturing her as she came to life while chatting to the film's director William Wyler. **I ...
