If you watched and enjoyed the first episode of the new “Cosmos” miniseries, here are some selected titles available to request from the Buffalo & Erie County Public Library regarding the topics and people involved with the show. (Descriptions from the back cover unless otherwise credited) The Pope and the heretic : the true story of Giordano Bruno, the man who dared to defy the Roman Inquisition / White, Michael, 1959- Giordano Bruno challenged everything in his pursuit of an all-embracing system of thought. This not only brought him patronage from powerful figures of the day but also put him in direct conflict with the Catholic Church. Arrested by the Inquisition and tried as a heretic, Bruno was imprisoned, tortured, and, after eight years, burned at the stake in 1600. The Vatican "regrets" the burning yet refuses to clear him of heresy. But Bruno's philosophy spread: Galileo, Isaac Newton, Christiaan Huygens, and Gottfried Leibniz all built upon his ideas; his thought experiments predate the ...

Finished reading Space Chronicles by Degrasse Tyson. Amazing book. Makes me sad we have not left earth orbit since 1972! Makes going to mars seem like a distant dream unless we go to war again. The main reason we went to the moon was to beat the Soviet Union in the space race during the cold war. What an ignoble thing it is that war between super powers is one of the greatest drivers of discovery.
“Unlike other animals, humans are quite comfortable sleeping on our backs. This simple fact affords us a view of the boundless night sky as we fall asleep, allowing us to dream about our place in the cosmos and to wonder what lies undiscovered in the worlds beyond. Or perhaps a gene operates within us that demands we learn for ourselves what awaits us on the other side of the valley, over the seas, or across the vacuum of space. Regardless of the cause, the effect is to leave us restless for want of a plan to discover. We know in our minds, but especially in our hearts, the value to our culture of new voyages and the new vistas they provide. Because without them, our culture stalls and our species withers. And we might as well go to sleep facing down.” — Neil Degrasse Tyson, Space Chronicles: Facing the Ultimate Frontier
My friend Lonnie has inspired me to boast my summer reading list. Some are brand spanking new and some are brand spanking old- some of which I will be revisiting. There is a science, philosophy, and psychology theme mostly in this list. Since some of the books were very short I decided to make it a goal of 20 total books. I'm aiming big- why not? Well, here they are: Feel free to share your lists with me! Title Author/Editor 1. Intuition Pumps and Other Tools for Thinking by Daniel C. Dennett 2. Space Chronicles: Facing the Ultimate Frontier by Neil Degrasse Tyson, Avis Lang (Editor) 3. Exploring Mars: Chronicles from a Decade of Discovery by Scott Hubbard, Bill Nye (Foreword) 4. Consider the Following by Bill Nye 5. The Illustrated A Brief History of Time & The Universe in a Nutshell by Stephen Hawking 6. For anyone who doubts the importance of NASA, global and here at home, I suggest Neil Degrasse Tyson's Space Chronicles, esp. prologue discussion about technologies we now take for granted which resulted directly or indirectly from space innovations, or about why we should be concerned about other countries' control of space, like, uh, China...

Book club meets tonight at 7:00 to discuss Space Chronicles by Neil Degrasse Tyson. New members and guests are always welcome.
Last night, Jon Stewart had astrophysicist Neil Degrasse Tyson on The Daily Show to talk about the his new book, Space Chronicles: Facing the Ultimate Frontier.
In the book Space Chronicles, by Neil Degrasse Tyson, a chapter tells of two spacecraft decades ago are several thousands miles off trajectory. One theory is that al the different elements on the craft, expand and contract on seperate levels. The Heat and the Cold affect everything to a different degree altering the course of the vessels. We are talking about craft only ten in circumfrance that are sent in a different direction than expected because of many tiny elements. Sounds metaphorically like Earth's Societys. Just a little change alters the course. Be a positive change. NO matter how little you are, it makes a difference in the future. Enough philosphy, the microwave beeped, leftover Spaghetti with Sausage, a glass of red wine and some Miles Davis on the Stereo. My present little nudge in Society.
Watched Neil Degrasse Tyson on C-SPAN last night ... need to get his new book, Space Chronicles. He made a lot of sense ... as a nation, we've stopped dreaming ... dreaming of doing the impossible. For those of you old enough, when's the last time you heard any of our leaders challenge us the way Jack Kennedy did when he challenged us as a nation to put a man on the moon by the end of the decade (the 1960's). That notion fostered an entire generation of innovators (Gates and Jobs were something like 12 and 13 when Neil Armstrong uttered his immortal words). He argues that a healthy NASA with a new mandate could reinvigorate our innovative spirit ... I found his argument most compelling.
"There are more molecules in an eight ounce cup of water, than there are eight ounce cups of water in all the bodies of water on earth." Neil Degrasse Tyson, Space Chronicles. What a great book.
On page 52 of 364 of Space Chronicles, by Neil Degrasse Tyson
"Another area of fuzzy thinking out there is the movement called Intelligent Design. It asserts that somethings are too marvelous or too intricate to explain. The contention is that these things defy common scientific accounts for cause and effect, and so they’re ascribed to an intelligent, purposeful designer…..So let’s start a movement called Stupid Design, and we’ll see where that takes us. For example, what’s going on with your appendix? It’s much better at killing you than it is at anything else. That’s definitely a stupid design. What about your pinky toenail? You can barely put nail polish on it; there’s no real estate there. how about bad breath, or the fact that you breathe and drink through the same hole in your body, causing some fraction of us to choke to death every year? And here’s my last one. Ready? Down there between our legs, it’s like an entertainment complex system in the middle of a sewage system. Who designed that?" And added to that, is occasionally I DO blog...lol.not to mention trying to help Penny get her orders out, make videos of her work, so and so forth.I wonder if the other versions of me in those other parallel universe's have more time?
Who is Jamila interviewing tomorrow? That would be Dr. Neil Degrasse Tyson. I've got 30 minutes. Suggestions for questions on US science education policy or his latest book, "Space Chronicles: Facing the Ultimate Frontier?" *If he's done a "Big Think" on the topic, I'm not asking about it.*
