Praying for the nations: Indian Ocean ~ 12 Mar 2013   Psalm 18:2 The Lord is my rock, my fortress and my deliverer; my God is my rock, in whom I take refuge.  He is my shield and the horn of my salvation, my stronghold.     Background:  The Indian Ocean is the third largest of the world's five oceans (after the Pacific Ocean and Atlantic Ocean, but larger than the Southern Ocean and Arctic Ocean). Four critically important access waterways are the Suez Canal (Egypt), Bab el Mandeb (Djibouti-Yemen), Strait of Hormuz (Iran-Oman), and Strait of Malacca (Indonesia-Malaysia). The decision by the International Hydrographic Organization in the spring of 2000 to delimit a fifth ocean, the Southern Ocean, removed the portion of the Indian Ocean south of 60 degrees south latitude.   Natural Resources:  oil and gas fields, fish, shrimp, sand and gravel aggregates, placer deposits, polymetallic nodules   Environmental issues:  endangered marine species include the dugong, seals, ...
Sunday 10th - Gordon River Cruise Left Queenstown in time to see a beautiful sunrise (picture 1) bound for Strahan and a 6 hour cruise around Macquarie Harbour and down the Gordon River. Went out through *** s Gate (picture 2) and into the Southern Ocean. Came back through the harbour entrance and headed down the river to view pristine huon and myrtle forest (picture 3). Had a short walk through the forest and saw a tiger snake basking in the sun...enjoyed a buffet lunch and then dropped in at Sarah Island, an old convict island, for a brief history on its harsh conditions. It really was the most amazing day trip! Drove to Cradle Mountain, in the middle of no-where and hence, no internet.today's happenings to follow.

Anti-whaling group Sea Shepherd says the whaling season in the Southern Ocean appears over with the Japanese fleet leaving.
A JAPANESE military ship has joined its whaling fleet in the Southern Ocean, increasing tension between whalers and activists after collisions last week. The 140m-long Shirase icebreaker, operated by the navy and described by activists as "intimidating", arrived near the Nisshin Maru whaling ship and Korean-flagged fuel tanker Sun Laurel in Australia's Antarctic territory early yesterday morning, Sea Shepherd Captain Paul Watson said. Before daylight, it sent a helicopter into the sky above the Sun Laurel, which is being prevented from refuelling the Nisshin Maru by activists who believe it is illegally carrying heavy oil, he said. "They're heavily armed helicopters," Mr Watson told News Limited from the Steve Irwin, one of three Sea Shepherd boats in the area. "They carry three of these big helicopters. "It is intimidating, but we're going to hold our ground and make sure they don't kill any whales." A spokesman at the Japanese Embassy said there were "no factual basis" to the reports and refused to comm ...
A United States appeals court has labelled environmental group Sea Shepherd 'pirates' as their engagement with Japan's whaling boats in the Southern Ocean heats up, so what reaction has there been to that decision from pro-whaling groups?
Lake Hillier, is a lake on Middle Island, the largest of the islands and islets that make up the Recherche Archipelago, Western Australia. The most notable feature of this lake is its rose pink colour. It is such a significant distinguishing feature of the archipelago that air passengers often take note of it. The colour is permanent, and does not alter when the water is taken in a container. The length of the lake is about six hundred meters. The lake is surrounded by a rim of sand and a dense woodland of paperbark and eucalyptus trees with a narrow strip of sand dunes covered by vegetation separating it to the north from the Southern Ocean. The island and lake are thought to have been first charted by the Flinders expedition in 1802. Captain Flinders is said to have observed the pink lake after ascending the island's peak. John Thistle, the ship's master, collected some of the lake's water, which he found to be saturated with salt. Although the source of the pink colour has not been definitively proven ...

Wietse van der Werf Dramatic scenes in the Southern Ocean today as some of my friends and fellow crew members currently on the conservation vessel Bob Barker (seen here in the middle) continue to block the illegal whaling factory ship Nisshin Maru from refuelling. Operation Zero Tolerance Update February 22nd, 2013 Not much happening down here in the Southern Ocean since the dramatic incident of road rage by the Captain of the Nisshin Maru. Just heavy seas, blowing snow and freezing temperatures although it is still summer here by the way. Two days ago the Japanese said they were calling a temporary halt to their operations now they say they are not but in fact they have halted their operations. Not a single whale has been killed in a week and none will be killed for sure over the next three days. The Bob Barker and the Steve Irwin are on the tail of the Nisshin Maru and the Nisshin Maru goes East then it goes West then it goes East and so far it has done that nine times. Meanwhile the Sam Simon is tailing the Korean tanker Sun Laurel and they have stopped 160 north of the Nisshin Maru. It is February 22nd which leaves only another six days left in the month and no more than 10 days in March. We know they won’t be killing any whales for the next three days and th ...
The Nisshin Maru Magical Mystery Tour The Japanese sure have a strange way of hunting whales. For the last 51 hours the Nisshin Maru has been going East than West then back East again and then West. Ten times so far covering a total of 168 nautical miles and essentially going nowhere. From 2000 Hours on March 20st until 2300 Hours on February 22 the Nisshin Maru started East then at 2053 went Southwest then at 0130 East again then at 0500 turned around completely to go West until 0830 then back East then at 1240 West again until 0230 a switch to the Northeast for a longer run then at 1200, West again until 1800 an about turn to due East and an hour later West once again. This has to be the most transited section of the Southern Ocean ever. What started out at 79° 55” East brought us back 51 hours later to 76° 56: East. A long transit to nowhere, and for no logical reason. Lots of fuel being burned for nothing. But where the whalers go we follow no matter how weird the course. They may be trying to ...

I'm not often one to yell and rant and rave but the Whaling in the Southern Ocean by the Japanese has to end. Sea Shepherd have been fighting a fight that the Gillard Government should have been fighting. Now it comes out that in Australian Territorial Waters the Japanese Goverment ordered an Australian registered ship out of our own waters. Enough is enough. Help spread the word to the Goverment that everyday Aussies wont stand for this! Repost & share this to show your support of Sea Shepherd and the work they do
And, with the moronic Japanese ICR Whaling fleet making the dumbest possible move in the Southern Ocean, by using their slaughter house factory ship to RAM not just 2 of Sea Shepherd's ships but also ram their own fleet's "rent-a-tanker" in the Costa Rica flagged Sun Laurel; the Whale hunt is OVER! And the Japanese killed less than a dozen whales. Their quota was near 1,000 whales. Sea Shepherd has definitely won a hard fought victory this year. Japanese government has recalled the whaling fleet 18-days early.

Anti-whaling activist group Sea Shepherd claims a Japanese vessel has deliberately rammed its ships in the Southern Ocean.
via Captain Paul Watson Speaking from aboard the Steve Irwin, Sea Shepherd founder Paul Watson told 3 News the Bob Barker was hit “multiple times”. “[It] has lost power, toppled the main mast, smashed up the deck.” Mr Watson says they were hit while trying to stop Japanese whaling vessel Nisshin Maru from refuelling – which he says is illegal in the Southern Ocean. “They’re frustrated we’ve prevented refuelling operations for two days.” A mayday has been issued and the Bob Barker crew have managed to stop water from coming in. Mr Watson says there are about 38 people on board. He also says that in the process of hitting the Sea Shepherd vessels, the Japanese struck the Sun Laurel – a Korean-owned fuel tanker which Mr Watson claims the Nisshin Maru was using to refuel. Mr Watson says the Sea Shepherd crew have been “passed a note in a bottle” by the Sun Laurel crew, “saying they are being held against their will”.

Description: Krill are shrimp-like crustaceans that are approximately 1 to 6 centimeters long. They live is the ocean, where they feed mainly on phytoplankton. They're near the bottom of the food chain and are eaten by whales, seals, penguins, squid and fish. Commercial fishing of krill occurs primarily in the Southern Ocean and the northern Pacific Ocean along the coasts of Canada and Japan. Krill that are caught are used for aquaculture and aquarium feeds, sport fishing bait or they are eaten as food. In Japan, krill that's caught for food is called okiami. Krill oil, the oil that's found naturally in krill, is extracted and sold as a nutritional supplement. It's sold in some health food stores and online in capsule form. DOSAGE: 1 or 2 capsules per day. Another reason krill oil is becoming popular is because it contains an antioxidant called astaxanthin. The algae that krill eat produces the bright red pigment astaxanthin that gives krill and other crustaceans such as lobster and shrimp their reddish-p ...

A Real Ghost Ship frozen in time In the mid-1800s a strange ship was discovered by Captain Brighton of the whaler Hope in the waters of the Southern Ocean between Australia and Antarctica. In front of the whaler, that ship was slowly floating out of one of the chasms that had opened up in the disintegrating walls of ice. Its decks were wreathed with ice and snow, its sails hanging in tattered and frozen shreds, its rigging broken and rotten, and the vessel itself crushed and splintered, but still she floated. What terrified Brighton’s men was the crew of the wreck-ship in front of them : seven men standing upright and encased in steel-hard ice, like so many statues of stone. On September 22, 1860, Captain Brighton of the whaler Hope entered into his logbook the fact that a whale had been sighted and chase given, but when they had drawn close to the ice barrier, the whale had given them the slip. An hour later Brighton wrote another report that later would stun and mystify all those familiar with the sea ...

After 80 days, 19 hours and 23 minutes alone at sea, Alex Thompson has become the fastest ever Briton to sail solo non-stop around the world, finishing third in the Vendee Globe.  This achievement alone is enough for a story but it is perhaps the route which led him to this podium that is the true reflection of his character.     Thompson's previous attempts to complete a circumnavigation have been subject to incredible bad luck.  In 2004 he retired early with damage to his yacht and in 2008 his boat was unluckily struck by a French fishing vessel as it got to Les Sables d'Olonne three weeks before the start.  He patched it up, but three days into the race Thomson discovered the boat was leaking and he was again forced to abandon. Thomson's boat also lost its keel in the Southern Ocean during the 2006 Velux Five Oceans solo around-the-world race and he was famously rescued by Mike Golding as his boat started to sink.  Despite these setbacks, he has returned again and again, and ultimately achieved h ...

Latest report from the Sea Shepherd Team From Jeff Hansen, Australian Director, Sea Shepherd The four Sea Shepherd ships are underway and have moved into the search pattern. We believe that the whalers should be in the Southern Ocean soon. The four ships have completed their speed tests and are very confident that we will be able to successfully keep up and block the slipway of the Nisshin Maru once we find her. All the ships have been conducting defensive drills to fend off any aggressive maneuvers by the harpoon ships, as experienced by the Bob Barker last year. The new helicopter pilot on the MY Steve Irwin has been training hard and is getting used to flying in these cold conditions. He is very enthusiastic and is willing to fly up to 8 hours a day in search of the whaling fleet. The entire crew of 120 volunteers is very optimistic and prepared to shut down the illegal whaling operations this year. It is 24th of January and it is the first time that no whales have been harpooned this late into the wha ...

Taking on the Vics Atherton Mountaineer Masters swimmer, Colin Hunt, gives his account of competing in the Point Lonsdale and Pier to Pub ocean swims. Point Lonsdale Rip View Swim Classic, Jan 5th The race is over a curving course – after a right dog leg round the first buoy – of some 1.4 km. I did this swim twice before, in 2001 and 2009, but I struggled to finish in 2009, so I’m nervous. There are 1600 starters and, as I launch off in a wave of 300, I decide I won’t go wide for peace and comfort, as in previous swims; instead, I’ll stay on the inside at the first and subsequent buoys to minimise the distance. I encounter a good deal of argy bargy up to the first buoy. However, after that it’s fairly smooth swimming. Don’t even feel the Southern Ocean cold much with my full wet suit. Now the adrenalin kicks in. I force myself to slow down. “Head and chest down, strong push past the hips”: put into practice Kim’s (coach at Atherton Mountaineers Masters) advice, which I know makes me fa ...
The U.S. space agency NASA and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration jointly issued two reports on 2012 world temperatures. NASA ranked last year the ninth-warmest since record-keeping began in 1880, while NOAA found last year was the tenth-warmest. The 2012 global surface temperature, including land and water, was 1 degree F (0.56 degree C) warmer than the 1951-1980 average. NOAA said in its report that most parts of the world were hotter than average over the course of 2012, including most of North and South America, most of Europe and Africa and western, southern and far northeastern Asia. Most of Alaska, far western Canada, Central Asia, parts of the eastern and equatorial Pacific, southern Atlantic and parts of the Southern Ocean around Antarctica were cooler than average, according to NOAA's National Climatic Data Center. Antarctica (i/æntˈɑrtɨkə/ or /ænˈtɑrktɨkə/)[Note 1] is Earth's southernmost continent, containing the geographic South Pole. It is situated in the Antarctic region of the Southern Hemisphere, almost entirely south of the Antarctic Circle, and is surrounded by the Southern Ocean. At 14.0 million km2 (5.4 million sq mi), it is the fifth-largest continent in area after Asia, Africa, North America, and South America. For comparison, Antarctica is nearly twice the size of Australia. About 98% of Antarctica is covered by ice that averages at least 1 mile (1.6 km) in thickness. Antarctica, on average, is the coldest, driest, and windiest continent, and has the highest average elevation of all the continents.[4] Antarctica is considered a desert, with annual precipitation of only 200 mm (8 inches) along the coast and far less inland.[5] The temperature in Antarctica has reached −89 °C (−129 °F). There are no permanent human residents, but anywhere from 1,000 to 5,000 people reside throughout the y ...

Technically they are referred to as tectonic plates, between the 7 major tectonic plates they cover most of the earth's surface except for where a few smaller ones exist. Because they cover such a large area the borders of each plate won't correspond to any specific counrty or reference point that can easily be referred to as a particular plates location. Extremely generalised locations are stated below for the 7 largest techtonic plates. 1. Pacific Plate - covers the majority of the Pacific Ocean 2. Antarctic Plate - covers Antarctica and much of the far Southern Ocean area 3. Indo-Australian Plate - stretches through Indonesia, Australia, New Zealand, Papua New Guinea and on to the Canary Islands 4. Eurasian Plate - covers all of Europe and most of Asia except the Philippines 5. African Plate - covers Africa and much of the surrounding ocean 6. North America plate - Covers North America and Arctic regions 7. South America Plate - covers South America and a large portion of the southern Atlantic Ocean Th ...
Day 15. Margaret River From Beneath. After a nice nights rest we went to the Margaret River Information Centre. From there with map and ultimate passes in toe we headed off to see and have a tour of Cape Leeuwin Lighthouse. This was very impressive as it is also where the Indian & Southern Ocean meet and the south western most point of WA. We then continued on via ice cream shop to Jewel Cave. This cave was very large and the lighting setup inside was done quite well! We then continued north to Lake Cave which as in its name a lake of water within. This has caused what is known at a upside down table formation from two stalactites joining together on the ground then water has washed the ground away causing this hanging table! This cave had two large low hanging rocks which they call headache rock and splitting headache rock. My poor wife forgot about them on return and coped a blow to the head on splitting headache rock giving her a slight concision and dropping her camera back down the cave entrance than ...

I just noticed that today we passed the 200,000 mark for friends to this page. That is amazing and I would like to thank each and every one of you for your support. The update for today is that all our ships are all in the Southern Ocean and we expect the Japanese whaling fleet to arrive in about ten days. It is summer down here but quite cold and the the days are 23 hours long. All the crew are well and looking forward to defending the whales of the Southern Ocean Whale Sanctuary.

Trapped Orcas The situation with the trapped Orcas in Northern Quebec is a tragic one but the only hope these whales have must come from the Canadian government. They have the resources. The United States Coast Guard is willing to help but they must be invited by the Canadian government and Canada has not done so. For those asking that Sea Shepherd send a ship, please keep in mind we are three months away. All our ships are in the Southern Ocean. There may not be a Canadian or U.S. icebreaker in range but if there is, it is the only solution. For those who say this is natural, I disagree. These animals are so stressed by lack of food caused by over fishing, global warming and pollution that they have been forced to venture further into unsafe waters just to survive. It is not the ice that is killing them, it is the situation we have created in our oceans that causes these disruptions. I fear that what may happen is what happened to a pod of narwals trapped a few years ago in the ice. The Canadian governme ...
yep. Pete Bethune Captained that ship down to the Southern Ocean with his own crew. Paul Watson: "So we are being sued once again and this time by the shameless Ady Gil. We are trying to reform CITES, trying to police poaching in the Galapagos, trying to stop a gas hub facility in Western Australia that threatens Humpback whales, trying to shut down the Namibian seal slaughter and today while we are struggling through heavy seas on o ...

As in previous campaigns, the conflict between Sea Shepherd and the whalers grows more intense with each engagement and Animal Planet documents the action in the new 12-part series. The issues surrounding whaling in the Southern Ocean are important and complex, and Whale Wars returns once again to capture them in all their intensity, says Marjorie Kaplan, president and general manager of Animal Planet. The majesty of these beautiful creatures and the lengths to which the Sea Shepherds will go in order to prevent whaling has made Whale Wars entertaining yet vital television. The series has become a trademark for the new Animal Planet, and audiences now expect to kick off . ...
Could 2013 be Japan's last year of whaling in the Southern Ocean? This is a real likelihood subject to the International Court of Justice handing down a decision later this year in the ongoing whaling dispute between Australia and Japan. With less than 48 hours to go until rounding Cape Horn, Alex has been enjoying some fast speeds on-board HUGO BOSS: “Good morning from the Southern Ocean! It’s been a fast night on board HUGO BOSS which is reflected in the miles that I’ve gained the three in front. I have slowed a bit this morning as I pass through a weather front, but that should be the last front before heading round Cape Horn. My routing currently has be passing around the Horn at around 06.00 (GMT) on Friday 4th January, this isn’t ideal timing as it will be the middle of the night for me so will be dark which is a little concerning given the current warnings of reported ice in the area. I am very much looking forward to getting around though and out of the Southern Ocean and heading North again - especially as this will be my first solo rounding. The weather once we turn the corner isn’t looking too complicated with consistent trade winds back up to the North Atlantic. Unfortunately, over the next 10 days I’m only due to ...

The Day After Christmas Update: By Paul Watson T'is the day after Christmas and we are at sea, The other three ships are in port. When are the whalers going to come to me? Thankfully their killing season has been cut short. Patiently we wait in the Southern Ocean, The whalers remain in Japan, The crew are overwhelmed with mixed emotion, Eager to confront them but happy they remain on land. Operation Zero Tolerance may be easy this year, If the whalers fail to appear, But I believe they are intent to return I fear So towards confrontation we will need to steer. Though this cause has made me an exile, And stranded me upon the deep blue sea, I will sail for the whales for many a mile, Before they succeed in capturing me. Surrounded I am by this dark blue moving shroud, Content to see the sun rise and set each day, Such peace to be so far away from the hominid crowd, Upon these waters I may be forced to stay. Better to be free upon the sea Than a prisoner in a prison cell, Better to die as someone free Than c ...

Sea Shepherd Captain Paul Watson speaks to SBS reporter Cassandra Hill about the recent United States court decision which limits its anti-whaling activities in the Southern Ocean.
It is a significant victory for the Japanese whaling industry. If complied with (and it should be as the US-based Sea Shepherd and its flamboyant Captain Paul Watson both accepted the US court’s jurisdiction) the decision will allow Japan to engage in whaling in the Southern Ocean essentially unhind...
Foreign Affairs Minister Murray McCully today announced three appointments to Antarctica New Zealand’s management board. Carolyn Burns, Tony O’Brien and Rob Fyfe will serve three-year terms on the board responsible for managing New Zealand’s programme in Antarctica. “Board members are required to successfully guide New Zealand’s activities in Antarctica and the Southern Ocean. With these new appointments, I am confident the board has the right mix of skills and experience to do so,” Mr McCully says. Professor Burns, a marine science expert, and Mr O’Brien, a media relations specialist, will begin their terms immediately. Mr Fyfe’s term will commence on 1 February 2013, once he steps down as CEO of Air New Zealand. Conservation activist Paul Watson says a US court injunction ordering his Sea Shepherd group to keep away from the Japanese whaling fleet will not deter its Southern Ocean campaign. A US appeals court this week issued an injunction ordering Sea Shepherd and Mr Watson not to physically attack or endanger the whaling ships, and to remain at least 450 metres from them at all times. The order was sought by the Institute of Cetacean Research (ICR), which undertakes the Japanese government's whaling program through a loophole in International Whaling Commission rules that allows whales to be killed for research. The ICR has welcomed the injunction, saying Sea Shepherd has engaged in "violent and unlawful attacks". Mr Watson, the head of the anti-whaling group who is aboard the vessel Steve Irwin, said Sea Shepherd was confused by the decision, but steadfast in its resolve. "We are 100 per cent committed to saving whales down here, that's why we're calling it Operation Zero Tolerance," he told NZ Newswire on Wed ...
Specific Lessons Learned Dead Reckoning: CAPN™ Log data was analyzed to better understand the possible dead reckoning errors introduced by using the last instantaneous GPS COG and SOG to forecast a new position. The GPS receiver was a Globalsat BU-353™ puck connected to the USB port of the laptop computer and hung in the cabin interior next to a portal where it achieved GPS but rarely dGPS. The 325 data points analyzed were all along a westerly trajectory in the South Indian Ocean while experiencing sou' east Trade Winds and a Southern Ocean swell. The course varied as the boat was gybed from time to time. In most instances, a single reefed main and working jib were flown on broad reach but a few times the main had a second reef and the storm jib was up, or the full main was flown without headsail. Wind vane self-steering was used. In general, CAPN™ would record from the GPS each hour the latitude, longitude, course and speed over ground. At the moment each data point was recorded, the wind v ...

COULD the tiny plankton that spends its days bobbing in the chill waters of the Southern Ocean hold the key to solving climate change? Actually, no.
11/36 20121 01:03 S15°11.141 E091°56.010 COG 279T @ 5.4KTS Rough seas due to Southern Ocean swell crossed with storm swells from a low pressure area around 37S° with 4 meter breaking peaks (biggest of passage yet). Rhapsody simply floated atop them. That’s the advantage of a small boat - they are so buoyant they rise up over the waves whereas larger vessels crash through the waves and create tremendous stresses on the hull. It was surprising to see these very large waves above the boat simply slide underneath, most with little more than a whish, others were more emphatic. Wind was at 25kts quartering astern, skies partially cloudy, rain to the north. The ride was better with the double reefs and the speed did not suffer because most of it was surfing. Occasionally, a cross wave slapped the ship and knocked her off course; everything outside got soaked, sounded like a small cannon going off inside. The cockpit was pooped a few times. All portals and Bomar® hatches were dogged; the companionway ...

12 December 2012 09:00 GMT: After another tough, challenging night in the Indian Ocean, Mike Golding has made a strategic decision to angle slightly north in search of an active low pressure system which he hopes should give him a boost down the race track towards the West Australia gate and then on to Cape Leeuwin. Against the leaders, François Gabart and Armel Le Cléach, he has lost some more miles over the last 24 hours and the weather systems – and the resulting sea states – are rather conspiring against Gamesa and the French and Swiss skippers he has been racing against since the North Atlantic. Presently, though, he is anticipating a split with Jean Le Cam [Synerciel] and already there is some 70 miles of separation between the two. Golding is expecting to be well set in the low in about three days time. "At the moment I am going upwind in the Southern Ocean, *** the wind and full ballasted under Main and Solent. I should probably change down but I am getting away with it and the breeze sh ...

Swimming in Iron pools is essential for the growth of marine phytoplankton. Its availability limits the productivity and carbon sequestration potential of the oceans. However, only dissolved iron is available for plankton growth, and scientists are beginning to discover that a large fraction of the total iron in the oceans exists as tiny solid particles a few nanometers or more across. In the 30 November issue, von der Heyden et al. use high-resolution microscopy and spectroscopy to characterize the distribution of iron particles along two transects of the Southern Ocean near Antarctica. Analysis of the particulate iron reveals strong variation in iron oxidation states and particle mineralogy, which control solubility and bioavailability of iron. Parkinson Takes Down Fanning to Claim Golden Rip Curl Pro Bells Beach Bells Beach, Victoria/Australia (Sunday, April 24, 2011) – Joel Parkinson (AUS), 30, has claimed the 2011 Rip Curl Pro Bells Beach presented by Ford Ranger over compatriot and former two-time ASP World Champion *** Fanning (AUS), 29, in an electric Final in solid six-to-eight foot (2 – 2.5 metre) waves at Bells Beach. The second stop of the 2011 ASP World Title season, the Rip Curl Pro Bells Beach celebrated its 50th year of operation this season and the Southern Ocean delivered one of the best swells in recent history for the world’s best to sink their collective fangs into. Today’s Final ran in front of a capacity crowd at Bells Beach, maxing out as early as 11am with cars lined back to the center of Torquay, and the elite ASP Top 34 delivered in sensational fashion. Leaving little to chance in the highly-anticipated Final, Parkinson opened up with an 8.53 on the first ride of the heat and drove the nail into the coffin with ...
An international commission should protect the ecologically rich Southern Ocean around Antarctica from industrial fishing.
Opposite Behaviors? Arctic Sea Ice Shrinks, Antarctic Grows September 2012 witnessed two opposite records concerning sea ice. Two weeks after the Arctic Ocean's ice cap experienced an all-time summertime low for the satellite era (left), Antarctic sea ice reached a record winter maximum extent (right). But sea ice in the Arctic has melted at a much faster rate than it has expanded in the Southern Ocean, as can be seen in this image by comparing the 2012 sea ice levels with the yellow outline, which in the Arctic image represents average sea ice minimum extent from 1979 through 2010 and in the Antarctic image shows the median sea ice extent in September from 1979 to 2000. ...So apparently there're five oceans, now. The Southern Ocean surrounding Antarctica is a thing, apparently. Way back in My Day, Pluto was a Planet, corporations weren't people and there was the Pacific, Atlantic, Indian and Arctic, and the water surrounding those frosty Antarctic beaches was just the southernmost ends of the former three. Law of Fives, I guess.

"The Southern Ocean accounts for 10% of the world's seas, yet less than 1% of it is "strictly protected" Although often depicted as a frozen region dominated by breathtakingly beautiful but sterile glaciers, Antarctica is bursting with life – but mostly marine life. Below the icy ocean surface, bright-colored seastars, sponges and other bottom-dwelling creatures of all shapes and sizes blanket the seafloor."

This I believe is the biggest threat to our future. Imagine acid rain that kills all the trees. Imagine every waterway full of dead fish. Imagine running inside so you don't get rain burn. If we don't stop pumping carbon into our atmosphere this will happen to the Ocean at an exponential pace. Here is one prepared earlier: Please don't vote for climate change deniers like Tony Abbot.
A little conflicted... I totally agree with the Sea Shepard's defending the whales of the southern ocean from "Japanese scientific whalers", who then sell their catch back in Japan. But saw the new series advertised the other trying to stop the Nordic whalers from their annual catch that they have been doing as part of their culture for 1000's of years, that they split with the towns people, not to make a profit from - is this wrong too? I think it is ok, and would be interested in what do you all think.

Amazing day whale watching--it turns out that the migratory route from the southern ocean runs about ten miles off the beaches of Perth. A mother and calf spent about an hour "in training" about 100 metres from our boat--first slapping their tails, then breaching, then waving their flipper, then more breaching. Between the two, we saw twenty or thirty breaches. I'd mention the perfect weather, but 85 and sunny is just another day in WA :-)

During Friday the frontal system is expected to move across southern and west districts, accompanied by gusty winds and rain areas. Rain will contract to the northeast of the state by early Saturday, then clear as the next high pressure ridge strengthens from the west.

September 18, 2012 The Consequences of Successful Intervention By Captain Paul Watson Photo: Leonard Kötters / Sea Shepherd It is nice to be wanted I suppose, and now it is not just Costa Rica that wants to bring me to their country for the “crime” of saving sharks. On Friday, Japan officially demanded my arrest for the “crime” of saving whales. Apparently the ‘red’ notice has been sent to 190 nations to be on the lookout for me. This is amazing. I have never injured a single person. I have not damaged any property. I have not committed an act of terrorism. I have not stolen any money or sexually assaulted any person. Japan is desperately upset because we have prevented them from killing whales. As for Costa Rica, well Costa Rica could not care less about our shark conservation efforts they are simply acting as a subservient instrument for Japan. Actually, considering the money Costa Rica received from Japan, I think the better term would be to say Costa Rica is acting whorishly with respect ...

Conservation Versus Extinction THE battle between conservation and extinction rages on. Many charitable organizations pressure governments to adopt stricter conservation laws in order to protect endangered species. Recently, for example, various groups met with Chinese officials and won their cooperation in efforts to eliminate the trapping of Asian black bears. These animals had been taken for their bile and gallbladders, which are used in traditional Oriental medicine. International Help To protect a species in one country but hunt it out of existence elsewhere does not bode well for its preservation. Consequently, international agreements have proved timely—and there are many. The Convention on Biological Diversity, the Rio Treaty, came into force at the end of 1993, closely followed by an Agreement on the Conservation of Bats in Europe. The International Whaling Commission added the Southern Ocean Whale Sanctuary to that of the Indian Ocean in an attempt to protect great and minke whales. But perhap ...

The iron stimulates plankton growth, which “binds” carbon dioxide out of the atmosphere, getting rid of one of the gases which warms Earth’s atmosphere. A trial, called Eifex, has been hailed a success, after a bloom of plankton sank 1,000 metres below the ocean, taking with it carbon dioxide. At present, the technique could only be used to “mop up” around a tenth of global carbon emissions — but scientists continue to investigate. (THE HINDU)
Okay, what the *** .. Since when did we get a fifth ocean? I grew up with four oceans and nine planets. It took some time, research, and listening to some really sweet audio forums for me to accept that pluto is now not an obsevred planet.but what the *** on the oceans, Atlantic, Pacific, Indian, and Arctic. That was it. Now they are trying to tell me there is an Anarctic, or Southern ocean. To think, my daughter starts school in a few weeks, what good am I going to be to her studies if I do not even know how many oceans there are... Man no wonder our parents had a hard time helping us.

The blue whale (Balaenoptera musculus) is a marine mammal belonging to the suborder of baleen whales (called Mysticeti).[3] At 30 metres (98 ft)[4] in length and 180 metric tons (200 short tons)[5] or more in weight, it is the largest known animal to have ever existed.[6] Long and slender, the blue whale's body can be various shades of bluish-grey dorsally and somewhat lighter underneath.[7] There are at least three distinct subspecies: B. m. musculus of the North Atlantic and North Pacific, B. m. intermedia of the Southern Ocean and B. m. brevicauda (also known as the pygmy blue whale) found in the Indian Ocean and South Pacific Ocean. B. m. indica, found in the Indian Ocean, may be another subspecies. As with other baleen whales, its diet consists almost exclusively of small crustaceans known as krill.[8]
