I have been friends with Dorie since we were in diapers. She has always been like a sister to me. Some of my best memories of growing up on South Main Street here in Batavia are of Dor and I playing Barbies for HOURS ON END...we would take as much time setting up the coolest Barbie house as we would playing. We were living out our dreams playing with those dolls and imagining that someday we would have our own Barbie-loving little girls. That did happen. I have a daughter, Maya, and Dor has three amazing daughters. What we didn't imagine during all those hours of play was one of our little girls being sick. Last year, Dorie's youngest daughter Bri was diagnosed with cancer and had to have her left eye removed. Bri is doing well today--she is cancer free and enjoying being a kid. Dorie and her family have made a commitment to raising money to purchase screening equipment so that all children are checked and more lives can be saved. I am teaching an all-level class on Sunday, April 13th to raise funds and a ...

"Grounds for Thought on South Main Street was not just a coffeeshop, but also a bookstore, where you could purchase used records and books as well as comics. In addition you could sit as long as you liked at one of the big tables, studying, reading, talking with others. Students worked here, but so did young people from the town itself, some of whom were still in high school. The coffee came from the shop’s own roaster near City Park. Sometimes the smell of the roaster wafted all the way to Napoleon Street, where Chiyou and Yukiko lived. Siri had hardly ever had such good coffee, and up till now it hadn’t been particularly important to her. Of course, she had heard predictions of the exact opposite, and hardly anyone bought her stories of this outstanding American coffee." from "We Inheritors," a novel by Angelika Reitzer, BGSU Max Kade Writer in Residence in 2012. (2014, Jung and Jung publishers, Salzburg) The geography has been changed somewhat, but the description of the coffee shop is accurate! (T ...

God Morning, FB friends and Family, first giving honor to God. Thanking him for another day. A day that wasn't even promised. I had a weird morning, couldn't figure out what I wanted so this is what I ate, LOL, it wasn't baked, it wasn't boiled. It wasn't broiled. It was fried, it was (3) little drum wingetts. That was good, not healthy, so for lunch I will have a half pack of oatmeal. Wel. It's that kind of day. Maybe I will walk to dunkin donuts on south Main Street and sit and eat, maybe. Maybe be a junk day. When I think about food I loose my appetite. What kind of day is this. Lord help.

Work could start in spring on health, veterinary center REPUBLICAN-AMERICAN WINSTED -- Construction of Northwestern Connecticut Community College's new allied health and veterinary technology building could begin this spring. Steven Frazier, NCCC's dean of administration, said recently that bids for contractors were to go out this month. Selection of a contractor could take place by the end of the month. The next step is to procure funding from the State Bond Commission, which Frazier said is no guarantee. But if the college does get it construction may start by late spring. The total project cost is $25 million. The Legislature has already approved more than $2 million of that for the design, architectural work and soil testing. Frazier said it will take 16 months to construct the two-story, 24-classroom building on South Main Street, near the entrance ramp for Route 8 southbound. It will replace the Joyner Learning Center, which will be demolished. The new building will be built where the adjacent parki ...

MARTIN LUTHER KING - THE FATAL SHOT CAME FROM A DIFFERENT DIRECTION In Memoriam: Ted Wilburn, the author of the piece which follows, passed away this morning, June 17, 2002. He had the courage not only to ask questions, but to find the answers when nobody else would. UPDATE! BREAKING: FLORIDA MINISTER SAYS THAT HIS FATHER, NOT JAMES EARL RAY, WAS THE "TRIGGERMAN" IN THE ASSASSINATION OF DR. MARTIN LUTHER KING JR. On April 4, 1968, while standing on the balcony of the Lorraine Motel, Dr. Martin Luther King was assassinated. The official story is that a single man, James Earl Ray, was staying at a rooming house located at 422 South Main Street. Click for full size picture In the back of this rooming house was a shared bathroom with a window that looked out onto the swimming pool of the Lorraine Motel. Click for full size picture According to the government, James Earl Ray shot Dr. Martin Luther King from that window. There is, needless to say, no physical evidence to prove this charge. The Place@ The Woodward, 111 South Main Street in Mount Vernon, on Saturday, March 16, at 7 p.m. Andy Cohen to play blues at The Place (MOUNT VERNON) – Andy Cohen travels like a bluesman of yore, packing his instruments from town to town. Like most, he carries a guitar. He might be the only one, though, with a portable acoustic piano. Cohen will be bringing his rare instrument, a dolceola, to The Place @ The Woodward on Saturday, March 16, when he joins acclaimed blues guitarist Noah Shull in a concert of traditional music. Cohen grew up playing the piano, but found it the least portable of instruments. Along the way, though, he heard gospel records by Washington Phillips, who played a pair of zither-like instruments called celestephones. The dolceola, manufactured by a company in Toledo, Ohio, for less than 10 years in the early 1900s, combines zither size and shape with a piano keyboard, giving keyboard players a portable instrument long before electronic keyboards were invented. Cohen's dolceola date ...
Walter Meyer says play up the history of the Town Brook. Slaves were said to have been hidden along the brook & under cover of darkness taken to Talcott House or Gillette house for the Underground Railroad. The Ayers family (prominent in our community in early/mid 1800s, helping to found Passavant Hospital, Ayers bank, Illinois College, Westminster Church) built their first cabin on South Main Street near the Town Brook. Read ideas from Walter & William Meyer on our blog.
I know the following is not a "Rememberance of Downtown Harrisonburg", however it is a new cituation in Harrisonburg that needs citizens to stand up and take our city back from JMU!! First let me disclose that I am a life long resident of Harrisonburg and a JMU graduate. I am not anti JMU, however there have been times that the City of Harrisonburg has let JMU have their way regardless of the long term consiquences. (i.e., "Giving away the olf HHS location at the rock bottom sale price when the City was out of space in our schools and if not used for city schools, could have moved all the city offices to one central location. Allowed JMU to tear down and build at their pleasure with no regard for the effect they are having on the city, etc..) I digress, the reason for this post is a news story on tonights WHSV News at 5:00 and 6:00. Our great and wise City Council memebers just last night approved a proposal to build a Median Strip with a 4 foot high Fence in the middle of South Main Street. Yes I said in ...

Andrea and Amber picked out clothes and some jewelry for child bride to wear at her viewing which will be from 1500 - 1900 (3 - 7 PM) on Monday Feb. 18th at the Angels Camp Memorial Chapel on South Main Street in Angels. We also picked out some photos of child bride for Andrea to do something with for the viewing. D600 The we all had a some fun playing with my new Nikon and a nice "nifty 50" snapping photos without needing flash (mostly of Graysen). I'll post the photos. Andrea took Clayre's obit home so she could get it to the Modesto Bee for me. It was definitely good to have people around who could talk human talk and not doggy talk (which I've been listening to and speaking since niece Barbara left). Pal Dustin's right beside me as I type this and says that his doggy talk always seemed to be OK with me before since we have no one else but each other in the house most of the time now. He's right as usual.

The U.S. will have four fewer downtown department stores this spring, as Macy’s pursues its latest round of real estate reckoning. Houston’s 791,000-square-foot Macy’s store opened in 1947 on South Main Street as Foley Bros. Dry Goods Co. When the Macy’s lease runs out next month, preservationists fear the building will be marked for demolition. Mayor Annise Parker has created the Downtown Retail Task Force — a group of marketing professionals, developers and civic leaders — to find a new location for Macy’s downtown and to seek options for other department stores and major retailers downtown.   Local sources in Honolulu say they expect Lexington Realty to replace the 90,000-square-foot Macy’s store downtown there with offices. The site has a 450-car parking deck that sets the property in great demand. The building originally opened as Liberty House in 1850.   The Macy’s store in Belmont, Mass., which opened in 1941 as a Filene’s, is soon to close. The landlord, Locatelli Properties, ...
