The total project cost is $25 million. The Legislature has already approved more than $2 million of that for the design, architectural work and soil testing. Frazier said it will take 16 months to construct the two-story, 24-classroom building on South Main Street, near the entrance ramp for Route 8 southbound. It will replace the Joyner Learning Center, which will be demolished. The new building will be built where the adjacent parki ...

Our Mayflower Camerata Vocal Ensemble had a most enjoyable afternoon today participating in the Middleboro Historical Society Open House and Garden Party celebrating the 200th anniversary of the Ebenezer Pickens House at 93 South Main Street. At several points along the way we sang selections both inside and outside the house, the latter under a tent while about 50 people were enjoying finger sandwiches, scones, and cookies. (We were able to tuck in afterward.) Our selections included three Elizabethan madrigals ("Hark, all ye Lovely Saints" by Thomas Weelkes, "April is in My Mistress' Face" and Sing We and Chant It" by Thomas Morley), 'You are the New Day" by John David and Peter Knight, "Chester" by William Billings, "Simple Gifts" adapted from the setting by Aaron Copland, and "Saints Bound for Heaven" (a Spiritual arranged by Alice Parker and Robert Shaw). Copy of my letter to CT Transit: June 21, 2013 Dear Ms. Bellott, - Omitted my private info - The first incident happened yesterday June 20th, 2013 on the bus to South Main Street at approximately 9:20 am. A young Black woman boarded the bus @ Farmington and Sigourney Streets and proceeded to add a dollar bill and some change into the fare box but apparently she was short a quarter and was frantically looking for it in her purse and sweater but couldn’t find it. The driver got irrated with her and told her, “Oh no it ain’t happening not today, you need exact change if not you have to get off!” She was flabberghasted and looked pitifully around to us, the other people on the bus for help. I felt so bad for her and so embarrassed that I didn’t have a quarter to give her. We all looked at each other and shook our heads not having a quarter. When he told her to get off the bus for a second time adding, “I don’t care if you need a penny it ain’t happening today.” A woman way in the back g ...

"Even when she was a child, she was always walking around with a little doctor's bag or nurse's kit," she said. "My father was a doctor, so I think she got it from him." At the time of her death, she was survived by her mother, Priscilla Bramhall Hodges of West Hartford; her father, Jefferson H. Hodges Jr. of Newington; a brother, Jefferson H. Hodges III of West Hartford; a sister, Kimberly A. Klein of Essex; and her paternal grandfather, Jefferson H. Hodges, of Roanoke, Va. The Place@ The Woodward, 111 South Main Street in Mount Vernon, on Saturday, March 16, at 7 p.m. Andy Cohen to play blues at The Place (MOUNT VERNON) – Andy Cohen travels like a bluesman of yore, packing his instruments from town to town. Like most, he carries a guitar. He might be the only one, though, with a portable acoustic piano. Cohen will be bringing his rare instrument, a dolceola, to The Place @ The Woodward on Saturday, March 16, when he joins acclaimed blues guitarist Noah Shull in a concert of traditional music. Cohen grew up playing the piano, but found it the least portable of instruments. Along the way, though, he heard gospel records by Washington Phillips, who played a pair of zither-like instruments called celestephones. The dolceola, manufactured by a company in Toledo, Ohio, for less than 10 years in the early 1900s, combines zither size and shape with a piano keyboard, giving keyboard players a portable instrument long before electronic keyboards were invented. Cohen's dolceola date ...
Walter Meyer says play up the history of the Town Brook. Slaves were said to have been hidden along the brook & under cover of darkness taken to Talcott House or Gillette house for the Underground Railroad. The Ayers family (prominent in our community in early/mid 1800s, helping to found Passavant Hospital, Ayers bank, Illinois College, Westminster Church) built their first cabin on South Main Street near the Town Brook. Read ideas from Walter & William Meyer on our blog.
I know the following is not a "Rememberance of Downtown Harrisonburg", however it is a new cituation in Harrisonburg that needs citizens to stand up and take our city back from JMU!! First let me disclose that I am a life long resident of Harrisonburg and a JMU graduate. I am not anti JMU, however there have been times that the City of Harrisonburg has let JMU have their way regardless of the long term consiquences. (i.e., "Giving away the olf HHS location at the rock bottom sale price when the City was out of space in our schools and if not used for city schools, could have moved all the city offices to one central location. Allowed JMU to tear down and build at their pleasure with no regard for the effect they are having on the city, etc..) I digress, the reason for this post is a news story on tonights WHSV News at 5:00 and 6:00. Our great and wise City Council memebers just last night approved a proposal to build a Median Strip with a 4 foot high Fence in the middle of South Main Street. Yes I said in ...

Andrea and Amber picked out clothes and some jewelry for child bride to wear at her viewing which will be from 1500 - 1900 (3 - 7 PM) on Monday Feb. 18th at the Angels Camp Memorial Chapel on South Main Street in Angels. We also picked out some photos of child bride for Andrea to do something with for the viewing. D600 The we all had a some fun playing with my new Nikon and a nice "nifty 50" snapping photos without needing flash (mostly of Graysen). I'll post the photos. Andrea took Clayre's obit home so she could get it to the Modesto Bee for me. It was definitely good to have people around who could talk human talk and not doggy talk (which I've been listening to and speaking since niece Barbara left). Pal Dustin's right beside me as I type this and says that his doggy talk always seemed to be OK with me before since we have no one else but each other in the house most of the time now. He's right as usual.

The site has a 450-car parking deck that sets the property in great demand. The building originally opened as Liberty House in 1850. The Macy’s store in Belmont, Mass., which opened in 1941 as a Filene’s, is soon to close. The landlord, Locatelli Properties, ...

He got ideas for its formation from his friend Arfon Roberts of the Llanelli Supporters Club in Wales and the clubs that *** visited on his first All Black tour of the UK in 1963-64. *** and his band of supporters had been on many trips - mostly Ranfurly Shield games - and it was the Taranaki Challenge on 14th August 1965 that was to be the first official away trip of the WRSC as a group. September 7th of that year at Athletic Park saw the birth of the first "Leo the Lion". The costume was made by Mrs Mary Seaton of Johnsonville, who was well known for the costumes she made for the New Zealand Ballet School. We have since had four or five suits made. Leo, with some of the Wellington supporters, did an act with the Taranaki mascot Ferdinand the Bull before the main game, much to the delight of the crowd. In 1969, along with a spec .. ...

We'll take a closer look at why some stores at the mall stayed open, while others closed. Plus, Patrick will let us know how much longer Brianna will be sticking around. In a hypercompetitive market where narcotics are the main commodity in contention, access to territory where it is produced and transported is a key issue in dispute. Drug crops that are used to make heroin and marijuana must be grown, harvested, transported to labs for processing, moved to distribution points, sold to wholesale markets, and purchased at the retail, or street, level. Methamphetamine must be produced with the necessary precursor chemicals and moved along the distribution chain in a similar manner as indigenously grown drug crops. Colombian cocaine and heroin must be received from South America and moved to market. Profit taking is done at each stage of the enterprise, meaning that money laundering is an additional feature of the mosaic war in Mexico. Moving drugs, money, guns, and personnel requires autonomy of action that is only enabled by unfettered access to certain areas— staging points, transit routes, and market destinations. The battlefields of the cartel wars are in essence zone ...
Snow update - the plows are going to pull in from the main roads that they have been constantly fighting with the wind ( and pulling out numerous cars ) and will focus in-town until the wind subsides. Please do not try to use South James Street until tomorrow. It is awful and not passable. We have two contracted end-loaders that are fighting to keep it open and are spending more time pulling out other cars and then each other out. The drivers are going to focus on residential streets. Realistically that will be it for today. Highway 141 is the only option for getting out or into town but IDOT is having a very hard time keeping that open and there are numerous cars that have slid or stalled on the roadway. I have heard that Fareway and Walmart are both closed. Hwy 44 is completely impassable. PLEASE stay off of the roads. After 6:00 tonight I have to pull in the drivers so they can get some rest. They will start out again at 4:00 a.m. There will be staff on site in the case of emergencies. Thank y ...

Now that our South Main Street water tank is back in-service after its rehab/repainting, we will next be performing the same improvements to our Rock Avenue tank. These short term issues, though, are part and parcel with our continuing efforts to bring you the best, cleanest and most efficient water system possible.

What a wonderful time of year it is! Have you seen the lights yet? A great big "you're welcome!" and "THANK YOU!" to Mr. Bensinger for dropping a note in the Daily Chronicle about the Christmas lights on our building! *Note below* Light display full of holiday spirit To the Editor: I wanted to say a special “thank you” to Dr. Donald Miller, D.D.S., of Genoa. After coming back into town from a particularly nasty trip to Chicago, his office on the north side of Main Street (Route 72) at Route 23 south was just the “welcome home” we needed. I was full of “bah-humbug,” which quickly slipped away as I saw the beautiful light display that illuminates his property. Rather than describe it, I ask that you pass by his office any evening and you will find that the trip was worth your efforts. Dr. Miller has been our family dentist for 17-plus years and it’s a nice surprise to realize that someone you thought you knew can welcome so many to our town in such a creative way. Once again, thank you Dr. Mil ...

*** COMMENT *** Here's an interesting look at how Yamaha see their markets changing and developing over the next few years. Note how they are aiming mostly for penetration into markets like India and to both increase sales and push up the value of those sales in South America and south east Asia, which the established and traditional markets of Europe and the US stay static both in terms of sales and value. Note that the UK doesn't feature - that says something about both the size of the UK market for bikes and Yamaha's current sales here too. Full analysis here:
