Gauteng, like every other year, far outranks the rest of the provinces in this regard with more than double the amount of Black-on-White murders than were recorded in KwaZulu-Natal. In previous years the order of provinces with the most Black-on-White murders were Gauteng, Mpumalanga, Northwest, Free State, Eastern Cape, Natal, Limpopo, Western Cape and lastly Northern Cape. The Black-on-White murder rate increased drastically for Natal and the Western Cape. White people were murdered by black attackers in 111 cities and towns across the country. Penny Hoets of Future Fact Survey The results reflect the views of all residents of South Africa, other than those living in deep rural areas or communities of fewer than 500 people and are based on a survey of 3,025 respondents, representing 21,6-million adults aged 16 years and over conducted in September 2013. The results show that overall 74% of South Africans deemed e-tolls “A bad idea”. This rose to 82% in Gauteng and the Western Cape and was as high as 95% among residents of the West Rand and 89% in the East Rand who have little option but to use the tolled highways. When results are limited to Gauteng, opposition to e-tolls unites all population groups with more than 80% now saying e-tolls are a bad idea as do 89% of DA supporters and 80% of ANC supporters. Will post the full story in comments below. Do you believe these numbers to be accurate? Of your peer group how many people do you know who still support etolling?

Why? Why? Let's think workable solution this does not work. Plan to share farms with workers on track 2014-06-22 Sharing farms with workers won't work – Johannesburg - Commercial agriculture stakeholders, including farmers, farm workers and Trade Unions, have until April next year to respond to Rural Development and Land Reform Minister Gugile Nkwinti's policy proposals that could see farmers handing over 50% of their land to their workers. According to the Sunday Times, Nkwinti said the land reform plan - which was published last week - was reflective of the ANC policy decision, through the Freedom Charter, to turn away from radical African nationalism and to embrace the concept that South Africa belongs to all who live in it - black and white - and that the land should be shared among those who work it. AgriSA's deputy president Theo de Jager however said that organised agriculture would reject Nkinti’s proposals. He said the move could also lead to massive job losses as farmers could let workers go ...

The programme is supported by KZN Athletics and has contributed R500 000 to over 600 learners since 2012. “This programme has proven hugely successful over the last few years and The Sports Trust is grateful to Nedbank for enabling this initiative to run for a third consecutive year. 2002... Hermanus, Western Cape, South Africa (about 115 kilometers southeast of Cape Town). Great White Shark diving... Steve Watson and Terrance Close clearly showed more intelligence than I as they would not venture into the cage to go below water. For perspective, that shark was almost the length of the boat. When I was in the cage submerged in the water and it swam by me, it was like a silent train... a silent train with enormous sharp teeth. And to be honest, the scariest part of the experience was that tiny boat riding over HUGE waves back into port.

Today, I am pleased to announce the new Western Cape Cabinet that will be sworn in by Western Cape High Court Deputy Judge President Jeanette Traverso on Monday 26, May 2014. This Cabinet is appointed in terms of my delegated responsibilities in Section 42 (2) of the Constitution of the Republic of South Africa. I have made my selection with the following in mind: Over the past five years the DA administration has developed a Provincial Strategic Plan that focused on economic growth and jobs, combatting poverty and providing opportunities for all. We have structured government to deliver on these plans and aligned the budget to implement them. The voters have given us a second term to continue our wo ...

I am a South African and I am a proud supporter and member of the ANC and will continue to be until I die. The people of South Africa have spoken and have made it clear who they want in charge of South Africa. The ANC is the only party that stands for equality. Sadly the Western Cape is still under the rule of the DA, which supports Apartheid and will keep our people in oppression until the day that South Africa will be free as a state. Then only can Palestine become FREE. Our people need to be educated on the realities of what is really happening behind the DA's doors. The DA continue to brainwash people by using the media as their mouth-piece, which is filled with lies and deception. We shall continue with the good and never STOP until the Western Cape is free from the ghost of apartheid! Aluta Continua!!!
Voter turnout across South Africa's nine provinces in Wednesday's election varied depending on the province, according to results from Electoral Commission of SA's national results operations centre in Pretoria on Friday morning. While the overall voter turnout average for the country was 70.89% by 04:39, the lowest was in Limpopo, with 60.56%.The province with the best voter turnout was KwaZulu-Natal, with 75.73%. Voting started late in the country's fifth post-apartheid elections at a number of Western Cape polling stations and in parts of Gauteng on Wednesday. Problems with materials delayed the opening of polling stations in the Rondebosch area in Cape Town, said Electoral Commission of SA (IEC) spokesman Trevor Davids. The late arrival of Ballot Boxes also caused a delay at the Manenberg Community Centre on the Cape Flats. Polling booths were scheduled to open at 7am for South Africa's fifth post-apartheid national and provincial elections.
Why the majority of blacks don’t vote DA Cameron Modisane | Today, 13:08 According to a study, 76 percent of White South Africans vote for the Democratic Alliance (DA). This is not because the DA is the ‘best' party in South Africa, but is because White South Africans identify strongly with the DA. Hence race will always play an important part in our politics and which party we choose to vote into power. The reality in South Africa is that you cannot win the elections unless you have the majority of black South Africans supporting you. The greatest hurdle that the DA needs to climb is the one relating to race. Most black South Africans couldn't be bothered what your track record is in the Western Cape, when there are perceptions of your party being a ‘white party' they simply will not vote for you in their millions. The majority of black South Africans, including the ‘clever blacks'/educated blacks, can hardly identify with the DA. To an ordinary black South African on the street, the FF+/VF+, NP ...

Shrien Dewani has landed in South Africa and will be appearing @ Western Cape High Court this morning .
Media and police are already lining up outside the Western Cape High Court awaiting the arrival of murder-accued Shrien Dewani who flew in, reportedly in private jet, from the United Kingdom on Tuesday morning. Dewani’s arrival in South Africa comes after a long extradition battle on grounds of Dewani’s mental health problems. Dewani’s legal team also raised questions of whether the UK citizen would get a fair trial in South Africa. Dewani stands accused of orchestrating the muder of his wife, Anni Dewani, while the couple were on honeymoon in Cape Town. He allegedly paid a South African man to kill his wife. The two were hijacked in a Cape Town informal settlement, Gugulethu, in November 2012. Dewani was released unharmed but his wife’s body was found shot dead in the abandoned car the following day. Three men have since been arrested and convicted for the murder.
Incitement to genocide is criminal, and taking action to prevent it is not an option, but a legal obligation... In April 7, 1994 in Rwanda a violent began with the Killing of Rwandan President Juvenal Hayarimana, a Hutu, when his plane was shot down above Kigali airport. Later it was heard on Radio, a presenter calling the other group cockroches ''amaphela''. In 100 days of frenzeid horror, almost one million people - a tenth of the country's total population were slaughtered. Here in South Africa, Minister of Sport Fikile Mbalula compared the DA's government of the Western Cape to witchcraft, urging residents to summon the help of tokoloshes. But clearly there's no need for such comments. South Africans must remain vigilant to the signs of impending disaster such as the one that has scarred Rwand's past.

EDITOR'S VIEW: Our politicians often get it wrong or simply don’t do as much as we expect of them. But every once in a while they do something that’s worthy of praise – even if it comes on the eve of an election. So take a bow Ravi Pillay (MEC for Human Settlements and Public Works) Pravin Gordhan (Minister of Finance) Logie Naidoo (eThekwini Speaker) and Yusuf Bhamjee (Umgungundlovu Mayor) for standing up against the proposed changes to the Employment Equity Act. If approved the changes would have dire consequences for minority communities in South Africa, in particular Indian and coloured South Africans in KwaZulu-Natal and the Western Cape respectively. In KwaZulu-Natal it would mean companies with more than 150 workers would have to limit their Indian managers to no more than 2.5 percent – the national percentage of Indian South Africans in this country. Brilliant article by Nikki Venter : ...As most of us are now aware, the Human Rights Commission of South Africa has recently been pushing at the boundaries of freedom of religion and freedom of expression in South Africa. There is a recent case where they have taken on a church in the Western Cape for preaching out of the bible that parents can use moderate spanking as a form of discipline for their children. Korus consists of four members. They come from the small township of Mbekweni in the Western Cape. The boyband has been together for more than a decade(+12 years). Their sound can be described as a mixture of rhythm and blues with a nice blend of soulful harmonies. What makes them unique is the fact that they, at their age average, write and compose their own music through their individual experiences. They make one see the world though the eyes of musicians. They have played shows both corporate and public around the Western Cape, including performing for international and national Woolwoths managing directors. They've had the privilege to perform for the likes of South Africa former President Thabo Mbeki, his temporary successor Deputy President Kgalema Motlante, Philip Green, the duke of Britain Prince Harry, Minister Trevor Manuel, to mention just a few. They've recently shared a stage with house mafias Crazy White Boy. The group is managed and musically produced by Banzi 'Blanka' Mazimela.

I'm not a politician neither am I with the Democratic Alliance (as yet :p) but please all those voting today at ward 48 and 49 please vote for the Democratic Alliance and not the Anc! Two big politicians moved to the Anc from the Da. As citizens we can't always belive the politicians bad mouthing the Da now since they with the Anc. Why did they keep quiet for so long if the Da did such things? All of those allegations are not true and what did the Anc actually do in ward 48 and 49? Nothing constructive at all even tho they are the nations Ruling Party. The Da is the only way for South Africa if you want growth in this country. Look at the Western Cape. That's just enough reason why you should vote for the Da! Don't be fooled and waste your vote! Same people who are voting for the Anc is still complaining every year about service delivery and unfairness!

About 2014 elections and newspaper headlines: Anyone notice how subtly the sentiment against the DA, their leadership, or their administrative efforts have been changing in in the headlines of the Western Cape newspapers? Such "soft", barely-supported criticism is what some may call "white propaganda". It's intent is to sow doubt in the mind of the readers about the appropriateness of the subject, in this case the DA. Such actions also would undermine the credibility of the objectiveness of the newspaper, which I hope everyone stops reading real soon. These "reports' have been appearing in the mainstream daily newspapers, in 2 languages and are also echoed on the Internet versions. For example, the headline which claims that there would be a march upon the house of the Western Province's premier, Helen Zille should not be taken lightly at all. Such talk is war talk, similar to the president of South Africa, as an ex military general of the ANC, singing and dancing his song which calls for his machine gun ...
After all is said and done, Dr Ramphele will not be the president of South Africa after the elections - Helen Zille will still be the leader of DA and possibly the Premier of the Western Cape; Lindiwe Mazibuko will be the leader of the DA in parliament and the good Dr an ordinary member of parliament under the leadership of Zille and Mazibuko. So, isn't the presidential candidature a token position?
History of South Africa South Africa at a glance Getting around South Africa Destinations Need to know History of South Africa Between 200 000 and 100 000 years ago, modern humans began to evolve throughout Africa – including South Africa. They became the San, who later met up with south-bound Khoi pastoralists from the north and became known collectively as the KhoiSan. The KhoiSan drifted down into the Western Cape at about the same time (300AD) that early Iron Age groups crossed the Limpopo – whose descendants, about 1 000 years later, formed the African kingdom of Mapungubwe and began to trade with India, Arabia and China. Blood River Monument, KwaZulu-Natal In 1652, Jan van Riebeeck and his 90-strong party arrived from The Netherlands and set up a ship-refuelling station at Cape Town – an important stop both geographically and politically, as it was on the only early trade route from Europe and the Americas to India, the ‘Spice Islands’ of the East Indies, and the East. Call me a Political Prostitute but truth is I got no I believe in party ideologies. If AgangSA is merging with the DA that means its carrying the say mandate as the DA which I refused to be affiliated with 5 years ago. Nothing has changed. DA is a party of the elites. DA in the Western Cape has been a party for the people of; Camps Bay, Clifton, Claremont, Hyde Park And Rondebosch. It does in no way put the interest of people of; Delft, Gugulethu, Khayelitsha, Inyanga and De Doorns. Its sad but its elitism. Nonetheless, Ntate Mills Soko( director of policy) thank you for the good policies you drafted. Rorisang thank you for your field work. The citizens of South Africa continue building. My home AgangSO_Uct, even though our future hangs in the clouds. Thank you and well done on contributions thus far. Let's also continue building.

Madiba: SA’s best player By: Rob Houwing, Sport24 chief writer 2013-12-06 Cape Town - The invitation came to the sports department of my newspaper rather out of the blue: “If you can all be at the University of the Western Cape tomorrow morning, there’s an opportunity to meet Nelson Mandela.” It was 1991, and that relatively early phase of the global icon’s freedom from 27 years of imprisonment under apartheid rule, when he was travelling far and wide in South Africa in goosepimply meet-the-nation initiatives, his charm rubbing off on folk from all walks of life. Hasty reshuffling of prior arrangements or not, this was hardly an opportunity to pass up, so I excitedly made my way to UWC, with several colleagues who had also been lucky enough not to draw the short straws dictating which of us would have to remain behind at the coalface of daily journalism. The occasion was quite literally a “line-up” of Capetonian sportswriters - as if we were the ball-boys and girls at Wimbledon tennis, scutt ...

Resistance Force of South Africa started a war to liberate Western Cape from Uruguay
Are you a descendant of the original European, Indian, Madagascar and Indonesian immigrants that originally settled the Cape Colony before moving north into Southern Africa? Perhaps you are still a resident in the Western Cape treated as a second class citizen in your own land by a government following their own brand of reverse racism? Your choice is to led by a president who seeks to escape justice while plundering your hard earned taxes or the emerging, extreme party of Julius Malema’s Economic Freedom Fighters who see no place for minorities in South Africa. Will our own unique culture developed over centuries be dispersed to the UK, Australia, New Zealand and Canada as South Africa sinks into the abyss? With the end of the rainbow nation in sight where do we go from here? The Cape Republic Party proposes that we return to our original land founded in the late 1400’s and granted full self government in 1872. The number of descendants of the original settlers who started out from the Cape Colony nu ...

This is a messed up country we live in, I mean none of these parties can deliver the promises they make. One can't vote for the DA if they cannot have proper working toilets and what not for the people in the townships of the Western Cape, how can they build houses for the rest of South Africa? The ANC, the last time the ANC was really working was when former President Thabo Mbeki was in power. Now it's just Nkandla Gate, corruption and a minister that is going to use tax payers' money (R25 million) to have Beyonce perform at South AfrICA's 20 years of democracy celebration. Ms Mamphela Ramphele and Agang SA, awesome ideologies, but it's nothing new, because everybody wants to stop corruption, every team has it's rotten apple and I smell mega flop with this new party. EFF, when this party was announced as an official party, I knew then that our country will soon get fNot that is isn't falready. I'm not even going to say anything about the other 400 parties.

African Food Market project Introduction Since 1994 South Africa has seen a marked increase of immigration from African countries with numbers exceeding 250 000 in the Western Cape alone. According to the Department of Home Affairs, South Africa has become the country that globally takes in the most asylum seekers. The 2012 figures indicate 180 0 asylum applications in the last 12 months. (2012-02-08.Western Cape Parliament portfolio committee) There are various reasons for this migration, including: • A strong South African economy drawing economic migrants • Conflict and political unrest on the African continent • Porous borders and a lenient asylum policy model Africa has over 6000 cultural dimensions, with each having a different food preference. Food preferences that become cultural diets are the product of available plant and animal (protein) foods that the immediate environment offers. T . ...

DON’T LET US FORGET WHAT THE WOOLWORTHS RACIST POLICY MEANS . . . . NO JOBS FOR WHITES ! pass this round again !! The WAR on Woolworths and what it means admin | September 7, 2012 | 0 Comments by Dan Roodt Something extraordinary is happening in South Africa. Perhaps for the first time since the days of our much-loved and brutally assassinated leader Hendrik Verwoerd who managed to rally both Afrikaners and English-speakers behind him, against the British Commonwealth, the UN and all comers, White South Africans are united in their opposition to an upmarket supermarket chain, Woolworths. You could call it WAR – Whites Against Racism. Since 1994, South Africa has become the country in the world, apart from Zimbabwe, where anti-white racism has been pushed to its absurdest extremes. Woolworths, like many big corporations, have taken to advertising jobs with the proudly stated proviso: “Whites need not apply.” Of course it is not put as bluntly as that, and couched in the Orwellian weirdness of A ...

Subject: FW: Helen Zille's newsletter of today. What a useless government we have Where, in any democracy in the world, can a handful of protestors close down a major urban highway, day after day, without facing arrest? Or, with impunity, blockade an airport; strew faeces in public places, and hurl toilet tanks into oncoming traffic? Where in any democracy can five “protestors” invite the media to watch them hijack a truck, and force the driver to “jack-knife” across a highway, without any consequences? The answer is the Western Cape, the only Province in South Africa where the ANC lost a free and fair election. (Watch the video link here). ANC office bearers openly and regularly announce their intention of “liberating” the province. They have an official name for this project. It is called “Operation Reclaim”. This is ironic, not only because the Western Cape Government was elected by a majority of its voters, but because, according to all official statistics, the poor get much better ser ...
E-tolls will hit a dead end: DA QUINTON MTYALA | 30 September, 2013 00:05 Western Cape transport and Public Works MEC Robin Carlisle is confident that the fight against the implementation of toll roads in the province will triumph in the courts. SAVE & SHARE 0 inShare EMAILPRINT President Jacob Zuma last week signed the Transport Laws and Related Matters Amendment Bill into law, paving the way for road tolling across the country. The DA slammed Zuma for signing the bill while a legal challenge to e-tolling is being considered by the Supreme Court of Appeal. Carlisle said that though the DA subscribes to the concept of "the user pays" it was unfair to tax people for the use of roads they seldom if ever used. He said the ANC and the subsequent DA administrations in Western Cape had spent R200-million on constructing the Chapman's Peak toll road, the cost of which has been borne by users of the road. In May the Cape Town city council won an interdict in the Cape High Court that blocked Sanral from implementi ...

Cape Town - Four men accused of trafficking at least three women across South Africa to Cape Town and sexually exploiting them are being investigated by the police’s Organised Crime Unit. Nwafor Emmanuel Jideoffer, Billy Emeka Amune, Ogechukwu Kingsley Mmaduekwe and Francis Chidiebane Nweke - all originally from Nigeria - appeared in the Cape Town Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday. They have been charged with multiple counts of rape, human trafficking, assault with the intent to do grievous body harm, kidnapping and sexual exploitation. It is alleged the men either recruited or trafficked the three women - who are from Joburg, KwaZulu-Natal and the Western Cape - and used them as sex workers. The women are all under the age of 30. The State alleges that the men lived off the money the women made as prostitutes. More charges are expected to be added against the men. Don't you think Premier Hellen Zille is running the Western Cape as it is still the Old Republic of South Africa??? It's so sad to feel this after so many years of Freedom!!!
Cape Town 'poo wars': Mass arrests in South Africa: At least 180 people have been arrested, some carrying bags of human waste, ahead of a planned protest over the lack of proper sanitation in the South African city of Cape Town. Despite the arrests, some bags of waste were dumped inside some Local Government offices, local media say. Last week, raw sewage was thrown at opposition leader Helen Zille as she toured poor areas of the city. She is premier of Western Cape - the only province not run by the ANC. The PIA's Mohammed Allie in Cape Town says there is no doubt that housing and sanitation are a real problem in Cape Town but many people are asking why these protests have only taken place in Cape Town, when the same issue exists elsewhere in the country. The ANC has distanced itself from the manner of these protests. SAPS LEGAL THREATS AGAINST POPCRU MEMBERS Issued by POPCRU on 04 June 2013 The Police and Prisons Civil Rights Union (POPCRU) has noted with disdain several threats of Disciplinary Action levelled against our members who took part in a march last week. Thousands of administrative staff from the SAPS marched to Police offices in Limpopo, KZN, Mpumalanga, Free State, Northern Cape, Eastern Cape, Western Cape and Gauteng. The employer told the media that these members were embarking on an illegal strike, a statement we refuted repeatedly as these members were taking part in a legal march as stipulated in the Gatherings Act of South Africa. POPCRU will fight tooth and nail to ensure that none of our members are charged or punished for having exercised their democratic right as it’s the intention of SAPS. POPCRU also wants to remind the employer that the several letters they keep sending our members constitute as an illegal act as they are threatening these members without laying any concrete charges. They a ...
"We lost so many young men in South Africa. We experienced a mother and her three children cut up in pieces in Queen's Town Eastern Cape, I witnessed the three young men slaughtered in their sleep in George City, Western Cape, A man of noble heritage, a clergy, a community leader murdered in Mitchel's Plain, Cape Town; the brutal rape and murder of a young (ugub) Somali woman in Uitenhage, Eastern Cape and countless other deaths and destruction of life. The pain, hurt and psychological trauma will remain with me forever. The images of a young man's body lying in cold morgue will haunt me. But in a brief moment today, I felt very happy. I felt loved and cared for. I realized with all the fragmentation I belong to a whole. I felt pride in who I am. All of a sudden, I felt proud to be Somali. May Allah bless you all Somali sisters and brothers who have so passionately responded to the plight of Somalis in South Africa." Mohamed Mohmud
SAPS and crime-gangs cooperate with each other: criminologist Eldrid De Klerk The ‘rumours’ that the SAPS and the gangs in the Western Cape are working together must be investigated: The allegations were made by criminologist kriminoloog Eldred De Klerk, who also recently was very critical about the SAPS using excessive violence in an interview with Al Jazeera TV with the headline ‘Who Polices the Police?” . said this week that ‘gang members are professional people who use their wealth to buy information with government people.’ He says the accusations are rife that SAPS members provide gangs information about the police activities. The Police Minister demands that De Klerk ‘provide proof of the allegations’. article: Al Jazeera: Who polices the police? “As two people die in custody every day in South Africa, we discuss rising police brutality and the issues behind it. The ANC says United States President Barack Obama and his wife Michelle should not accept Cape Town's Freedom of the City award. ANC Western Cape secretary Songezo Mjongile says this is nothing other than a diversion and it would be a pity if Obama accepted the award from a city that doesn't care about the poorest of the poor. Mayor Patricia de Lille reportedly made the decision to honour the Obamas in recognition of their inspirational example. Her proposal was adopted by council last May with 128 councillors voting in favour, four against, and 58 abstaining. The Obamas have reportedly accepted the honour. The couple will pay official state visits to Senegal, South Africa, and Tanzania from June 26 to July 3 to strengthen "conomic growth, investment, and trade. On our Monday phone topic, what do you make of the provincial ANC's statement and the proposed award to the Obama's?
In a speech to the Process Expo at Nasrec this morning, FW De Klerk questioned the tendency to be pessimistic about both South Africa - and Africa. He said that he wanted to address "these Prophets of Doom and Afro-Pessimists in a balanced way". He conceded that South Africa was once again experiencing serious international perception problems. Foreign observers were worried about the role of radical Trade Unions and were also concerned about the Marikana incident and farm strikes in the Western Cape. These developments had a negative impact on foreign direct investment, which had fallen by 43.6% in the past year.  De Klerk said that it was nevertheless important to retain balance in one’s assessment of South Africa - and informed his audience of the progress that had been made since 1994: After decades of isolation South Africa had emerged as a respected member of the international community; the country had experienced 18 years of economic growth - interrupted only briefly by the global  crisis o ...

Russian economist fears ‘failed state’ in SA POSTED BY CBB ⋅ JANUARY 20, 2013 ⋅ 1 COMMENT South Africa is in danger of “tipping over” and becoming a failed state, according to Yuri Maltsev, a Soviet defector and economic adviser to former Russian president Mikhail Gorbachev. INFLAMED: A burning tyre rolls past a police vehicle in Villiersdorp, Western Cape, on Monday. Picture: TREVOR SAMSON Dr Maltsev said on Wednesday that South Africa was at a crossroads and there were dangerous signs of instability, such as the farm protests in the Western Cape, which some see as part of a political attempt to undermine the opposition Democratic Alliance. “The African National Congress (ANC) is a monopoly, and power corrupts,” Dr Maltsev said in an interview with Business Day. He was speaking at a forum organised by the Free Market Foundation. “What worries me is this can be the point of no return … South Africa is at a crossroads and can tip over.” Dr Maltsev was referring to spreading social unr ...
The use of cupping as a therapy for post stroke rehabilitation - by Dr Joy Saville. The following is a guest blog-post in the form of a written interview with Dr Joy Saville, a female cupping therapist from South Africa. Please give us a short introduction about yourself, and in particular how you ended up getting involved with cupping? I studied Complementary and Alternative Medicine (CAM) at the University of the Western Cape and specialized in Unani-Tibb as it is the foundation of conventional medicine, shares roots with African Traditional Medicine and parallels can be drawn between the philosophical principles of Traditional Chinese Medicine and Ayurveda. I was introduced to Cupping therapy whilst studying Tibb. As I had never previously been exposed to CAM I found the system of medicine and the therapies, including cupping therapy, fascinating. Have you researched any illnesses/ conditions with regards to treatment with hijama/ wet-cupping? I have not performed any formal research studies in cupping ...

THE Western Cape needs to be "reintegrated" into South Africa and must not continue on its path toward a white "volkstaat", said the African National Congress (ANC) in the province, as it began implementing a fresh campaign to gain support. Speaking during a press briefing on the outcomes of the provincial lekgotla held at the weekend, ANC provincial secretary Songezo Mjongile said on Monday the party stood united. It was ready to lead its supporters in a mobilisation to defeat the DA’s "racist, backward, divisive agenda". "We want to take the Western Cape street by street, township by township, village by village and town by town," he said. The party accused Democratic Alliance (DA) leader and Premier Helen Zille of deliberately excluding blacks and women from top positions in the provincial government. It questioned why the number of voters in "rich white areas in the province … had been significantly increasing over the years while the number of black voters in poorer areas was decreasing". The ANC ...
JOHANNESBURG — South Africa is often called the “rape capital of the world.” This year, as the world celebrates International Women’s Day, South Africans are mobilizing to end this horrifying trend. In recent months, the outrage has grown. These protesters are marching to protest the brutal killing of teenager Anene Booysen. Anene was one of an estimated 64,000 girls and women who are raped every year in South Africa. Her experience was horrifying. She was raped and tortured in her hometown of Bredasdorp in the Western Cape this year. Her attackers literally tore her small body apart. She died shortly after in a local hospital. Troy Martens, the spokeswoman for the Women’s League of the ruling African National Congress party says the brutality of the attack has galvanized the nation. “I think we find ourselves in a very fortunate situation at this moment in rape advocacy and sexual violence advocacy. Because there is so much public attention on it at the moment and there is a pub[lic] sen ...

20 February 2013 The General Secretary Congress of the People 108 Fox Street 6th Floor Metropolitan Building Johannesburg   RESIGNATION FROM COPE   Dear Madame   In 2009 1.3 million voters in South Africa placed their faith in COPE. Those voters have grown weary of the evident general decline in South African society. COPE was seen as viable alternative to the Ruling Party. It would appear that COPE has betrayed the trust of 1.3 million compatriots.   Many of COPE’s present public representatives have no history of a shared plight for equality and therefore COPE seldom tackles the issues relating to the well-being of the public. There is very little visibility at community level. In fact, there is very little activity in communities. I have mentioned in previous communiques  the lacklustre Western Cape “leadership”, that even events affecting the public here in the province goes unnoticed, the unfortunate events in De Doorns was one such example. It leads us to believe that either the leadershi ...

Cape Town - Despite consumers baying for blood, the food researcher who exposed the meat scandal refuses to name and shame the suppliers, retailers and butchers whose products were tested. "The focus of our research was not to name and shame, but rather to force corrective action," said Prof Louw Hoffman, co-author of the shocking study that revealed 68% of processed meat products sold in South Africa contained donkey, goat and water buffalo meat. Hoffman said since the study was conducted in the middle of last year, retailers had already started labelling the products more precisely. "At the time of the study, the practice of incorrect labelling was widespread. Now retailers and butchers have started labelling correctly and are even sending meat samples for verification." For the study meat scientists from Stellenbosch University collected samples for testing from retail outlets and butcheries in four provinces, with the Western Cape being exposed as the worst with labelling. While labelling rules in Sou ...

Recent residential property buying trends in the Western Cape and South Africa as a whole, suggest that a R120 million ultra luxury home on Cape Town’s peerless Nettleton Ridge in Clifton may well attract a buyer from sub-Saharan Africa’s growing list of US dollar billionaires. Located below Lion’s Head, between Nettleton Road and Victoria Road, the home has breathtaking views of the Atlantic Ocean across Camps Bay and Clifton, and clear sight of the Twelve Apostles. This is the view of property entrepreneur Stuart Chait, founder and executive chairman of Cape Town based Land Equity Investments. He says buyers at this level are mainly families from London or one of sub-Sahara’s fast-developing, natural resource-rich, countries like Nigeria, DRC, Congo or Ghana. “Apart from buying property, these are the people who invest in South Africa, create jobs and add significantly to our economy,” he says. According to Chait, World Bank figures show that net capital inflows to sub-Saharan Africa are exp ...

Boycott tips SA for Test series: (the following was reported by News24 and written by Rob Houwing, their chief sportswriter) Cape Town - South Africa’s pace attack will be the essential difference between the sides when the Proteas host Pakistan shortly in a keenly-awaited three-Test series. So says controversial pundit and former England opening batsman Geoffrey Boycott, who lives in the Western Cape. Speaking in his regular “Bowl at Boycs” slot on www.espncricinfo.com on Thursday, Boycott turned around a reader inquiry over whether “the likes of (Pakistan bowlers) Junaid Khan and Saeed Ajmal can hold back South Africa’s run machine of Amla, Kallis and Smith”. He said: “Good question, but I would turn it a different way: can Pakistan’s batsmen hold back the seamers of South Africa? That’s where the crux is; it’s not Pakistan’s bowlers against the South African batsmen. “The South African batsmen are good - there’s Kallis, Amla, Smith, there’s AB de Villiers, who is a fabulous ...

Anglo American Platinum has announced restructuring... Only a matter of time before the Farms in Western Cape do the same - South Africa
Clashes between striking farmers and police mercenary forces erupted in De Doorns, South Africa. Police fired rubber bullets and stun grenades at hundreds of striking farm workers who blocked a highway in the grape-growing Western Cape on Thursday, the first clashes of a year likely to be marked by fractious labour relations. Hundreds of striking workers seeking higher wages and better working conditions again blocked a major highway running through the town of De Doorns, about 100 kms (60 miles) east of Cape Town.

The Health department's plan to run all South Africa's academic hospitals is the only way to give patients the treatment they deserve, says Minister Aaron Motsoaledi. Experts in the health sector hope the centralisation plan will particularly help patients in provinces like North West, Mpumalanga and Limpopo, who are allegedly often turned away from Gauteng hospitals. Currently, South Africa's 10 academic hospitals are run by the relevant provincial health departments. These are Groote Schuur and Tygerberg hospitals in the Western Cape, Steve Biko, George Mukhari, Charlotte Maxeke and Chris Hani Baragwanath hospitals in Gauteng, King Edward VIII Hospital and Inkosi Albert Luthuli Central Hospital in KwaZulu-Natal, Universitas Hospital in the Free State and Nelson Mandela Academic Hospital in the Eastern Cape.(C/Press, pg 8 [Zinhle Mapumulo] 06/01)

Nearly two decades after apartheid ended, South Africa is becoming a de facto one-party state. The liberal opposition—the Democratic Alliance (DA), led by a doughty white woman and former anti-apartheid journalist, Helen Zille—has the right ideas, calling above all for the ANC to respect the constitution. The DA has made electoral gains, climbing to 17% of the vote in the last general election in 2009 and 24% in local elections last year. It runs Cape Town and the encompassing Western Cape Province better than the ANC runs most of the rest of the country. But most blacks see the DA as too white, and still have a deep-seated loyalty to the ANC—whatever its failings—as the party of Mr Mandela and liberation. That still gives the ANC over 60% of the vote. For the foreseeable future the DA has no earthly chance of national power.

Somerset Hospital or now known as The New Somerset Hospital has two unique Qualities. Its one of the oldest if not the oldest hospitals in South Africa. Situated in the Western Cape, Cape Town it rests on Prime property adjacent to the V&A waterfront a Tourist attraction. Far from being a good example from what Government Health institutions should be, Somerset is being robed of Quality standards one would expect a institution of this status and situated at the hub of the Western Province tourist attraction. My identity shall remain anonymous but you may contact me at January.PondersI began my employment at Somerset less than a year ago and I can assure everyone I already can speak volumes about how its inexperienced Management runs such a fine institution to the Ground.
Nelson Mandela is in the hospital, as of this writing fighting a lung infection. I read his memoir “Long Walk to Freedom” a while back. It’s such a page-turner. It was an adventure and a thriller – he was an outlaw (fighting for his beliefs!) and a fugitive. …. It was a tear-jerker – tortured in prison and had a complicated family life. But it was certainly a very inspiring book – How can someone jailed for 27 years come out with a spirit still unbroken?! And the writing style – This man is one of the most eloquent men in the world. Greetings to Cape Town, Western Cape, South Africa
Travel industry courts Chinese consumers As African marketers continue to seek ways of tapping into increasingly affluent Chinese consumers, South Africa’s Fancourt luxury hotel and golf resort has announced the appointment of a PR, marketing and sales company to drive the brand in the Asian market “China is an important growth market for South Africa and, with increasing interest shown in the Garden Route region as part of (Chinese visitors’) itineraries, it makes sense to extend our focus there,” says Fancourt Sales and Marketing Director, Carl Reinders. “The appointment of AfricaCreate will not only assist us in dealing with language barriers, but also in preparing to host Chinese guests.” Fancourt is located in the Western Cape Town of George and forms part of the Garden Route tourist region that extends from Mossel Bay in the west to Storms River in the east. In October, the 613 hectare resort – which is home to two luxury hotels, a spa and features three award-winning golf courses – ...
Class actions in South Africa? The framework has been set for the launching of class action lawsuits within the SA legal system after a landmark ruling was handed down by the SCA last week, says a Mail & Guardian Online report. Legal experts and practitioners have hailed the court's overturning of a 2011 Western Cape High Court decision not to provide a class certificate to litigants seeking a class action legal case against bread cartels found guilty of price fixing in 2007. Premier Foods, Tiger Brands, and Pioneer Foods were all fingered for collusion in setting the price of retail bread in the Western Cape, after then independent bread distributor Imraahn Mukaddam blew the whistle on the trio's crooked activities. The report adds until now, there was no monetary or legal basis in SA for those personally or professionally affected by collusion to be reimbursed or compensated. But Mukaddam *** pes this ruling will change that. ‘This isn’t just about the money. It’s about setting a precedent whereby ...

Western Cape Electorate Under Attack It is becoming clearer by the day that Western Cape citizens are being punished for voting for the opposition. The latest utterances by national government ministers and ANC-provinces are indicative that they mean this province grave harm. Rural unrest, which is growing daily, is promulgated by organisations with one thing in common, an alignment to a certain political grouping. The lack of permanent employees willing to partake is indicative the labour issue is a ruse for a more sinister plot. Today, the Eastern Cape ANC called for a boycott on all South African wine in solidarity with the De Doorns strikers. Firstly, De Doorns is not a wine region. Secondly, how is a boycott going to aid the plight of rural labour, when if heeded, the rural economy would collapse? Thirdly and most importantly, the national government sets the minimum wage, it is applied throughout South Africa, so why is the castigation of farming restricted to the Western Cape? Why are some of the n ...

Superguards protect farms By: Steve Kretzmann, City Press 2012-11-18 18:35 Johannesburg - Farmers in the Ceres area last week hired private security companies to guard equipment and provide back-up for a police force stretched dangerously thin by explosive protests across the Western Cape. But these weren’t run-of-the-mill security guards - they were paramilitary operatives specially trained in handling strike action. Farmers were reluctant to name the companies they had hired, or had been asked by the companies themselves not to mention their names. Some farmers told City Press they had simply been told security had been provided, but had no further details. The guard outside the premises of Dutoit Agri in Ceres, the largest family-owned farming group in South Africa, had the logo of Vetus Schola protection services on his pullover. Of military bearing and with a foreign accent that suggested he may be from the DRC, it did not look as if the the stern guard’s services came cheap. There’s a heading ...
(Cape Town) – Workers in Western Cape Province who help produce South Africa’s renowned wines and fruit are denied adequate housing, proper safety equipment, and basic labor rights, Human Rights Watch said in a report released today. The government of South Africa, along with the industries that employ these laborers, should take immediate steps to improve their working and housing conditions, Human Rights Watch said.2011 Report.

Cape Town is the crime-ridden capital city of the Western Cape. At any one time, there are believed to be around 120 criminal gangs operating in the Cape Flats, and the average murder rate is a staggering 46.15 homicides per 100,000 inhabitants. The township of Nyanga is one of the most dangerous places in South Africa. From April 2011 to March 2012, criminals in the area were charged with 233 murders, 1,046 serious assaults, and nearly 2,000 drug-related offenses. Furthermore, almost every category of violent crime is on the increase. The high crime rate has been blamed on factors like alcohol abuse and high dropout rates. And these problems are exacerbated by unemployment. Subcouncil 14, to which Nyanga belongs, has an estimated unemployment rate of 70 percent. HIV and AIDS is also a major problem in the area. From-

An estimated 5.6 million people were living with HIV and AIDS in South Africa in 2009, the highest number of people in any country.1 In the same year, it is estimated that 310,000 South Africans died of AIDS-related causes,2 reflecting the huge number of lives that the country has lost to AIDS over the last three decades. Prevalence is 17.8 percent among those aged 15-49, with younger adults being particularly affected.3 HIV prevalence among those aged two and older also varies by province with the Western Cape (3.8 percent) and Northern Cape (5.9 percent) being least affected, and Mpumulanga (15.4 percent) and KwaZulu-Natal (15.8 percent) at the upper end of the scale.4 Marking a change in South Africa's history of HIV the South African Government launched a major HIV counselling and testing campaign (HCT) in 2010.5 Since its implementation, the HCT campaign has had a notable impact on the availability and uptake of HIV testing and treatment.

Women's Month 2012 South African Women This month, SmartCape pays tribute to all those heroines who have made it possible for us to enjoy our freedom today. Government officials have called on all sectors of society to unite in a national effort for the advancement of women in all spheres of South African society. August 9 is an annual Public Holiday when citizens of South Africa celebrate the achievements of women, and together they advance women's struggles for empowerment and their rights to full equality. "56 years of women united against poverty, inequality and unemployment" is the focal point of Women's Month 2012. As citizens of the Western Cape with a female premier and female mayor, we feel proud to be at the forefront of the battle for women and to be treated as equal to men. South Africa recently lost two veterans of the march. Albertina Sisulu and Bertha Gxowa were among the group of women who left bundles of petitions containing more than 100 000 signatures at then Prime Minister JG Strijdom' ...
United States Secretary of State Hilary Clinton may be in for a welcome with a difference when she arrives at the University of the Western Cape (UWC) on Wednesday for her talk on strengthening ties between the US and South Africa. Clinton is on an official visit to South Africa, much to the opposition of some civil society organisations. The Workers International Vanguard League (WIVL) was on Tuesday mobilising people opposed to Clinton’s visit to protest at UWC. The group’s Shaheed Mahomed said people should bring along “your old shoes and rotten eggs and posters”. “We starting to mobilize people … the very start of it is to air our views and make it known to the public that it’s not a one-sided story that Clinton can come here and pretend the US are the saviours of Africa whereas they are the death of many people in Africa,” said Mahomed, adding that American companies were exploiting South Africa’s natural resources, which among other effects, was the cause of the high unemployment r ...

For your urgent attention. South AfrICA (Country risk rating: High); 7 August; ANC Youth League threatens mass protests in Cape Town The Western Cape branch of South Africa's African National Congress Youth League (ANCYL) has threatened to block sections of Cape Town's N1 and N2 highways, halting transportation in these areas, should the provincial government, led by the Democratic Alliance (DA), fail to adequately address its grievances. The ANCYL has given Western Cape and DA party leader, Helen Zille, a 7 August deadline to respond to its demands which centre on public service delivery in the city's informal settlements. The Western Cape, where Cape Town is located, is the only administrative province in South Africa governed by an opposition party. However, the ANC continues to garner significant support from residents living in the city's sprawling informal settlements. In Cape Town, much of the ANC's support emanates from the townships of Gugulethu, Khayelitsha, Langa and Macassar, all located near ...
