Florence Ada Fuller was a South African-born Australian artist. Originally from Port Elizabeth, Fuller migrated as a child to Melbourne with her family. There she trained with her uncle Robert Hawker Dowling and teacher Jane Sutherland and took classes at the National Gallery of Victoria Art School, becoming a professional artist in the late 1880s. In 1892 she left Australia, travelling first to South Africa, where she met and painted for Cecil Rhodes, and then on to Europe. She lived and studied there for the subsequent decade, apart from a return to South Africa in 1899 to paint Rhodes' portrait. Between 1895 and 1904 her works were exhibited at the Paris Salon and London's Royal Academy. In 1904, Fuller returned to Australia, living in Perth. She became active in the Theosophical Society and painted some of her best-known work, including A Golden Hour, described by the National Gallery of Australia as a "masterpiece" when it acquired the work in 2013. Beginning in 1908, Fuller travelled extensively, li ...

It was announced this week in 1966 that The Seekers would tour South Africa for five weeks later in the year, and also perform in Kenya and Rhodesia, making them the first British-based pop group to visit Rhodesia since the rebel break-away government of Ian Smith had taken power the previous November. Among the group's support acts were the British harmonica virtuoso Tommy Reilly (father of David), comedians Hope and Keen, the sons of Syd and Max Harrison, who'd appeared with The Seekers as the Ugly Sisters during Cinderella's Stockton season. They went on to sold out shows in Johannesburg, Cape Town, Durban, Pretoria, Port Elizabeth, East London and Bulawayo. Then it was on to Rhodesia, before they flew to Nairobi - where disaster struck. With four shows at the Kenya Cinema completely sold out, The Seekers arrived to be greeted by the news that their work permit had been rescinded by the Kenya Immigration Department and their shows had been cancelled. The Seekers were given no official reason for the .. ...

Port Elizabeth's St George's Park staged the First Test to be played outside England or Australia in 1888-89 (England winning by eight wickets) and in 1969-70 hosted the final Test before South Africa's 21-year isolation. It also staged South Africa's first rugby international, also against England, in 1891. In 1896 it witnessed one of Test Cricket's most remarkable games. England's George Lohmann took 7 for 38 in South Africa's first innings and then 8 for 7 in their second as they were bowled out for 30. Situated a block away from Jikeleza, the ground became famous for the enthusiastic band that plays during Tests. The ground has brought mixed fortunes for the South African side. In 1992 they secured a superb win by 9 wickets, Allan Donald claimed 12 for 139, on a pitch that many had said favoured spin bowling and was a fast bowler's nightmare. But in 1997 they lost to Australia by two wickets, after leading by 101 runs on the first innings, as Mark Waugh played one his most valuable Test innings.
When last did you visit this Friendly City? My last visit was about 6 years ago! Donkin Reserve and Donkin Memorial, Port Elizabeth. Port Elizabeth owes its origin and development to the arrival of British settlers in 1820. Sir Rufane Donkin was the Acting Governor of the Cape at the time, and he changed the name of Algoa Bay to Port Elizabeth in memory of his deceased wife, Lady Elizabeth Donkin, who had died at Murat, in Upper Hindustan, on 21 August 1818, before his secondment in South Africa. Shortly after the arrival of British settlers in the Bay, Donkin had a pyramid of stone built on the hill above the harbour, and established a reserve of about 4 hectares around its base. It was declared a National Monument under old NMC legislation on 8 July 1938.

Port Elizabeth (South Africa) (AFP) - South Africa has suspended oil and gas exploration off the east coast following a complaint over the impact of underwater sound pollution on sea life, an official said Thursday. The government-run Petroleum Agency of South Africa (Pasa) halted seismic surveys along a pristine stretch of coast pending discussions between international oil firms and an environmentalist who blew the whistle on the out-of-season tests. "The agency has deemed it imperative to suspend seismic operations until the process of consultation is completed, and a report submitted to the agency this week," spokeswoman Althea Adonis told AFP. After studying the report, Pasa will "apply its mind and decide whether to allow seismic operations to recommence or not," she added. Companies compile a three-dimensional map of the seabed by bouncing sound waves off undersea rock formations to detect deposits. Local environmental consultant Paul Martin complained to Pasa this week over non-compliance with an ...

METHODISTS MOURN TATA MADIBA Statement by the Presiding Bishop of the Methodist Church of Southern Africa, Bishop Ziphozihle Siwa, Johannesburg 6 December 2013 _ The Methodist Church of Southern Africa learns with profound sadness of the death of former President Nelson Mandela. We extend our heartfelt condolences to his wife, Graça, his family, and our entire nation on the loss of the man whose inspirational leadership took South Africa from the depths of despair during the dark days of apartheid into a new era of hope, peace and freedom. Although we are sad and mourn the passing of a father, an icon and world leader we cannot help but celebrate his life as well. As a Church, we have been privileged to be associated with Madiba since the early days of his life when he was educated, first at Clarkebury and then at Healdtown, Methodist educational institutions in the Eastern Cape, both of which were important influences on his life. Indeed, after his time at Clarkebury, the young Mandela said his horizons ...

"It's not been an easy period for South African cricket, but I want to thank our fans and commercial partners for their patience and support during this time." The tour will start with two T20 matches to be played at the Wanderers (Johannesburg) and Newlands (Cape Town) respectively and will be followed by three ODIs at Newlands, St George's (Port Elizabeth) and SuperSport Park (Centurion). South Africa Cycle Challenge Earlier this month, 11 cyclists from around the world rode from Port Elizabeth to Cape Town in South Africa as part of GVN's 2013 Cycle Challenge. THIS DAY IN AFRICAN HISTORY Date: 25 September, 1907 On 25 September 1907, the railway line connecting George to Cape Town was opened. This railway connection was a significant infrastructural development, as it allowed for the effective transport of heavier freight loads. It also allowed for easier passenger travel. Until then, the main form of transport had been wagon and ox and cart and horse. Date: 25 September, 1974 The achievement of independence in Mozambique inspired the South African Black Consciousness Movement organisations, the Black People's Convention (BPC) and the South African Students' Organisation (SASO), to organise a 'Viva Frelimo' rally. If Portuguese colonialism could be defeated in Mozambique, so could settler-colonialism in South Africa. The idea was conceived by the SASO president at the time, Muntu Myeza. Date: 25 September, 1977 Steve Biko, anti-apartheid activist and leader of the Black Consciousness Movement in South Africa, was thirty years old and was reportedly extremely f ...
Writing Workshop on Wednesday: Your Truth in Fiction This workshop, for writers, or those who'd like to improve their writing, will be given by writer and actor Lisa Fugard at the ALIF Riad. She describes it as exploring the “alchemical process of taking the ‘stuff’ of one’s life and fictionalising it.” “How far does one go with the act of “making it up”, she asks. “Play with gender, with age, with setting – all the while exploring the emotional dynamic at the heart of the your story. “Write because it’s a secret passageway, a door that swings open to reveal unexplored worlds. It’s a companion and a balm. It will challenge you and provoke you in all the right ways. There is an essential, private relationship between you and the world that is revealed when you sit down with a blank page.” Born in Port Elizabeth, South Africa, Lisa Fugard is the only child of playwright Athol Fugard and novelist and poet Sheila Meiring Fugard. She moved to New York City in 1980 to pursue an actin ...

Somalia's president says he "wants answers" from South Africa after the brutal murder of a Somali man in Port Elizabeth, Al Jazeera has learned. The Somali man, 25-year-old Abdi Nasir Mahmoud Good, was stoned to death on May 30 by a mob. The violence was captured on a mobile phone and shared on the internet. Sheik Mohammed, Somalia's president, called on his South African counterpart Jacob Zuma to "act immediately" to arrest those responsible. Kamal Gutale, chief of staff in the Somali presidency, told Al Jazeera on Monday: "The president has asked Mr Zuma and his foreign minister to look into the matter and investigate the brutal killing and violence." The murder is the latest in a number of attacks on Somali immigrants in South Africa. Police are investigating the death but no one has been arrested. At the time, President Zuma was not aware of the incident and expressed surprise," Gutale said. The South African president promised to look into the matter, he said. But SASA said that the South African gov ...
The Somali government on Monday called on South Africa to protect Somali nationals living in the country after a spate of attacks on foreigners. Residents in a township near Johannesburg rioted against the Somali community last week, while tensions have also flared in Port Elizabeth in the east of the country. The unrest in Diepsloot township came after a Somali shop owner allegedly shot dead two Zimbabweans last week. Somali shop owners in Port Elizabeth have also been targeted. Police have arrested dozens of people and the government in Pretoria has condemned the attacks, which are reminiscent of the wave of xenophobic violence that left at least 60 foreigners dead in 2008. "I appeal to the Government of the Republic of South Africa as a matter of urgency to intervene and contain this unnecessary and unfortunate violence against Somali business communities to preserve peace and stability," Somali Prime Minister Abdi Farah Shirdon said in an open letter to South African President Jacob Zuma. THE Namibian police have brought fresh charges against the 12 South African pilots who were arrested in northern Namibia on Saturday, but had the case thrown out by the Oshakati court on Sunday. Yesterday the pilots were charged with violating Namibian airspace and illegal entry into the country. Police spokesperson, deputy commissioner Edwin Kanguativi said yesterday the pilots had been charged under section 19 of the Civil Aviation Act of 1962. The pilots, one from Margate and the rest from Port Elizabeth, Grahamstown and East London, were on a trip in 12 light aircraft across Botswana and Namibia with eight passengers. It was partly a holiday and partly to raise awareness and funds for the Cancer Association of South Africa (Cansa). One of their group, who has prostate cancer, was too ill but has accompanied the group with his daughter by road. It was because of him the group decided to raise funds. Pictures provided in the meantime show the small two-seater aircrafts surrounded by soldiers. ( By Melan ...

TODAY IN HISTORY: 1970 The end of an era that was only just beginning. South Africa completed their first series whitewash with a thumping victory over Australia in Port Elizabeth. Their 4-0 triumph was made up of four huge victories: 170 runs, an innings and 129 runs, 307 runs, and 323 runs. But South Africa would not play another Test for 22 years, after apartheid brought about their isolation, and nobody will ever know just how good this team - which included Barry Richards, the *** Eddie Barlow, Denis Lindsay and Mike Procter - could have been. In this one, Richards and Lee Irvine made centuries in their final Test innings, Procter took nine wickets, while Peter *** pulled a hamstring and could not complete what turned out to be his last over in Tests. 1974 A triple-century of bewitching brilliance from Lawrence Rowe, in the third Test against England in Barbados. His 302 included 36 fours and a six, and came off just 430 balls. Remarkably, it was his 11th first-class hundred, but the first ...
International Women's Day Celebrating the 8th of March, we had a different initiative in South Africa by contemplating the date with the re-launching of the book V-Women outside the church walls and taking the opportunity to congratulate women from all walks of life with a red rose and a flyer including awareness against abuse. The book relaunch was hosted at Novel Books, at Hobart Grove, in Bryanston and the owners Helen and Sharon welcomed the crowds with great pleasure. The book V Woman was written by Cris Cardoso bringing the teachings of Proverbs 31 to our modern society and focusing on modern women uplifting the values of the past times that are being lost in a our society. It was recorded a signing of 5,188 and an attendance of 6,000 people. The same celebrations were held in Cape Town, Durban, Port Elizabeth and Rustemburg by the Godllywood Family who offered red roses and awareness pamphlets. The purpose was to celebrate great achievements of women today but reinforce the importance of being vir ...

IMBADU MAWABA, I was amazed to hear Cebo reminding me of what I would not like to remember. Cebo and Sakhe have always been a significant part of my life for many years, but they gave space to many other important friends that I have accumulated. Sakhekile Njongo also reminded me and said that "you must also not forget to tell Khaka, Nqaba and Viko that in September 1990 you had to leave George and go to Engcobo via Port Elizabth to apply for your passport Engcobo. You had to go and do this because your Transkei passport got lost on your way to that daunting challenge of job seeking work at Mosgas, Mossel Bay. However, you need not to tell them but let them study it from your own experience that majority of South Africans especially Africans were denied freedom and citizenship in some parts of the country by apartheid government in South Africa. The journey home took many surprising turns, the transport that took you from George to Port Elizabeth (PE) stopped Enjoli, and you knew no soul in that area.
The N2 starts in Cape Town in the Western Cape and runs through the cities of Port Elizabeth and East London in the Eastern Cape and Durban in KwaZulu-Natal to end at Ermelo in Mpumalanga. A BRIEF HISTORICAL LOOK AT THE BIRTH AND EVOLUTION OF INNER WHEEL TOWARDS GLOBAL DIFFUSION Even before 1934, some Clubs were formed in other parts of the world, having heard about the Inner Wheel organisation in Great Britain & Ireland - such as Ballarat (1931), North Sydney (1933) and Bendigo (1933) in Australia - in the following years, more Inner Wheel Clubs formed, for example, the Napier Club (1936) in New Zealand, Port Elizabeth (1938) in South Africa, and Winnipeg (1943) in Canada. From 1945 Inner Wheel continued to expand globally, with the formation of at least 15 Clubs in remote places. Equally, Inner Wheel's penetration into Europe is extremely interesting. The first European Club outside of Great Britain and Ireland was formed at Bergen (Norway) in 1935, thanks once again to Margarette Golding; the second, after ten years, in 1946 at Apeeldom, Holland. The Association began to change from a national organisation to a worldwide organisation, and it was felt that a closer connection was necessar ...
Off to South Africa tomorrow and catch up with my old mates from Larkhall, David Clark and Dougie Hamilton, back 16 March. Looking forward to some warmth Br! See yah!
South Africa v Pakistan, 2nd Test, Cape Town, 4th day South Africa excellent, but not yet great South Africa are undoubtedly the best Test side at present but they still have much to achieve to be considered among the all-time great teams One way of judging how much a series victory means to a team is perhaps by the scale of their celebrations. South Africa's recent ones have involved singing the team song on the pitch. They sang it at Lord's, they did it in Perth and at Newlands, after beating Pakistan. They did not do it in Port Elizabeth, after their resounding triumph over New Zealand. Success over Pakistan is highly valued, as was evident when the squad emerged two hours after the winning runs were scored, dodged the sprinklers that were watering the outfield and formed a huddle on the pitch. They did their thing and left to the sounds of the occupants in one of the hospitality suites chanting, "Happy Birthday," to AB de Villiers, who turned 29 today. The result gave South Africa breathing room at th ...
S15 Preview - Round Two, Part Two History will be made when the Southern Kings host the Western Force in their first ever Super Rugby match in Port Elizabeth on Saturday. The debutants’ road to Super Rugby has been a tumultuous one, filled with political potholes and littered with controversy. The Eastern Cape franchise feel theirinclusion in the Southern Hemisphere’s pre-eminent provincial tournament is long overdo, while those in Lions’ country - and several other regions of South Africa - believe the decision is devoid of merit. It’s been the major talking point in South Africa since it was confirmed last August, but the time for talk is over. On Saturday, it’s put up or shut up time for the Kings, an opportunityfor the newcomers to silence the critics and prove they belong. Quintin van Jaarsveld looks at Saturday’s matches! Hurricanes v Blues (Westpac Stadium, Wellington - When you talk about a new-look side, no team have undertaken a greater facelift than the Blues. A new coach (John Kirw ...
Reuters) - "Blade Runner" Oscar Pistorius put on his artificial legs and walked across his bedroom before firing four handgun rounds into the locked bathroom door, killing his cowering girlfriend in cold blood, prosecutors said on Tuesday. Reeva Steenkamp, a law graduate and model, died after being hit by three rounds, prosecutor Gerrie Nel said. Pistorius wept uncontrollably in court as Nel outlined details of a shooting that has gripped South Africa and the millions around the world who saw the double amputee's track glory as the ultimate tale of triumph over adversity. Scores of mourners gathered in the coastal city of Port Elizabeth for Steenkamp's funeral, where the mood was one of grief tinged with anger at the loss of "an angel". In Pretoria central magistrate's court, defense lawyer Barry Roux disputed the murder charge, saying the facts surrounding the shooting in the early hours of Thursday were unclear. "All we really know is she locked herself behind the toilet door and she was shot," he told ...

The president of the land has ordered that Ghana's failure to win the ultimate in South Africa should be looked into The President of the Ghana John Dramani Mahama has charged the Ghana FA to find out the cause of the Black Stars' inability to win the Africa Cup of Nations trophy in South Africa, but has assured them of government support.    The Black Stars went to the tournament as one of the pre-tournament favorites but failed to end the nation’s three decades wait of the continental trophy after their shock penalty shoot-out defeat to Burkina Faso in the semi-final.     President Mahama said in his address at a short ceremony to mark the relocation of the seat of government from the Osu Castle to the Flagstaff House that although the team showed resilience in their semi-final game, his government will take keen interest to rebuild the Black Stars.   “This government will work with the GFA to carry out a post mortem on what happened and take the corrective measures to restore ...

Burkina are a very, very good team – Ghana NELSPRUIT, South Africa (AFP) – Ghana, down and out after their shock semi-final loss to Burkina Faso here Wednesday, will pick thermselves up to face Mali in the third-place play-off, assistant coach Maxwell Konadu said. Despair was etched all over captain Asamoah Gyan’s face at the post-match Press Conference following the 3-2 penalty shootout loss to a team ranked 66 rungs below them in FIFA’s world table. The defeat leaves them heading down to Port Elizabeth for the bronze-medal tie on Saturday rather than lining up in Soweto’s Soccer City 24 hours later against Nigeria in the final. Ghana arrived at the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations with high hopes of securing their first title for 31 years, but instead face a repeat of last year when they finished fourth after losing 2-0 to Mali in a play-off. King Nelson Mandela's Image How Long Before Worship Is Required From AfricanCrisis.Org By Shaun Willcock 7-25-4 There are plans to erect a giant statue of Nelson Mandela, 65 metres (over 200 feet) high, in the city of Port Elizabeth, South Africa. This sculpture would be bigger than the Statue of Liberty in New York! Communist countries have loved to idolize their leaders, conferring near-godlike status upon them after their deaths. Historically and officially, Communism despised all religion, but lost no time in creating a religion of its own: the religion of the State itself. And the gods of this State religion were its leaders and founders, to whom the masses were required to pay homage. Vladimir Leninís corpse was set up in public to be virtually adored. Russians in their hundreds of thousands would line up to file slowly and reverently past his see-through casket, to gaze adoringly at his mortal remains. Giant statues of Lenin, Stalin and other Communist 'heroes' were erected all over the vast Sovie ...
The dreams of hosts South Africa and the tiny Cape Verde Islands came to a shattering halt on Saturday when they were knocked out of the African Nations Cup by Mali and Ghana respectively in the quarterfinals. Mali, seeking their first Nations Cup title, kept their hopes alive by beating South Africa 3-1 on penalties, after the match finished 1-1 at the end of extra time, while Ghana, aiming for a long-awaited fifth crown, beat Cape Verde 2-0. South Africa, trying to repeat their 1996 success when they were crowned champions on home soil, were eliminated after losing in a shootout in Durban, while Cape Verde, described by their coach Luico Antunes as "the best team in the competition", lost to two Mubarak Wakaso goals in Port Elizabeth. Ghana will meet the winners of Sunday's clash between Togo and Burkina Faso in next Wednesday's semifinal in Nelspruit while Mali will play either tournament favourites Ivory Coast or Nigeria in the last four in Durban on the same night. Saturday's results, while perhaps s ...
Mauritian referee Rajindraparsad Seechurn has been appointed to take charge of Ghana’s quarter-final clash with Cape Verde at Africa Cup of Nations on Saturday. The 42-year-old, who courted controversy during Ivory Coast’s 3-0 win over Tunisia at the ongoing tournament in South Africa, will handle the game in Port Elizabeth. The Elephants should also have been awarded a penalty toward the end of the first half when Tunisia captain Khalil Chammam handled the ball in the 18-yard area but referee Rajindraparsad Seechurn of Mauritius waved away their appeals.
Appiah chary of youthful Cape Verde. Ghana coach Kwasi Appiah is very much disturbed about facing Cape Verde at the quarter finals of the 2013 Orange Africa Cup of Nations. Appiah said he would have preferred the Elephants of Cote d’Ivoire as Saturday’s opponents for the encounter billed for the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium in Port Elizabeth, other than the surprise packets. “I would have preferred playing against Cote d’Ivoire than Cape Verde because I know much about the Ivorian team. “We are focused for the game and are fully concentrated on the game ahead of us.” The soft-spoken Appiah reckons a tough outing against the Blue Sharks, who have served as the surprise packets of the tournament after qualifying to the next round alongside hosts South Africa, from Group A that also included Morocco and Angola. “Cape Verde has a strong team; defense and attacking wise. They fight for each other and play as a unit.” Despite beating the Islanders by a lone goal in a friendly last November, the Bl ...
Dennis Brutus was born in Salisbury, Zimbabwe in 1924 of mixed parents, who while Brutus was a child migrated to South Africa and lived in Port Elizabeth. Brutus' early education was irregular but his mother introduced him to English Poetry, reading to him from Tennyson and Wordsworth. He eventually entered Fort Hare University as an adult and graduated with a Bachelors of Arts degree. Subsequently, he taught English and Afrikaans for fourteen years in South African high schools. But his active participation in protests against racism and apartheid laws in South Africa led to his dismissal in 1962 and his arrest in 1963.
GHANA, MALI REACH Africa Cup QUARTER-FINALS Ghana clinched top place in Group B of the Africa Cup of Nations with a 3-0 victory over Niger Monday while Mali held the Democratic Republic to a 1-1 draw and finished runners-up. The Black Stars of Ghana stay in Port Elizabeth for a Saturday quarter-final against debutants Cape Verde while Mali face hosts South Africa later the same day in Durban.
LAST CHANCE TO JOIN Queen Mary 2 IN LOCAL PORT Date published 28.01.2013 FOR customers wanting a chance to join Cunard’s flagship Queen Mary 2 in a South African port, the ship’s call in 2014 could be their last chance. “This will be the ship’s fifth consecutive call, and she will probably be replaced on the route by Queen Elizabeth, which... has never been in South African waters,” explained Cunard’s local representative Carol McCarthy, owner of White Star Cruise and Travel. “We plan to make the 2014 Queen Mary 2 voyage the most attractive ever for the local market,” continued Ms. McCarthy, and added White Star had formed an alliance with Pentravel to offer inclusive cruise/fly/hotel packages “at extremely competitive prices for the South Africa market from Southampton to Cape Town and Cape Town to Australia, and we believe this will, for the first time, bring luxury cruising within range of a much larger customer base”.
DEDICATE TO 500,000 PIPO BACK HOME-ANTUNES Coach Lucio Antunes dedicated Cape Verde's historic passage to the Africa Cup of Nations quarter-finals to the inhabitants of his homeland. The debutants' fairytale run continued when beating Angola 2-1 on Sunday to qualify from Group A. "My team and I dedicate this victory to the wonderful people of Cape Verde," said Antunes. "Our objective at this tournament has been achieved. We wanted to reach the quarter-finals." Cape Verde, a nation of ten islands located off the west coast of Africa, were trailing 1-0 with just nine minutes of their final Group A tie left in Port Elizabeth. But the smallest country to ever compete at the Nations Cup staged a dramatic turn around, with late goals from Gege and Heldon, to spark celebrations among the half a million inhabitants back home. South Africa's late equaliser against Morocco, with the match in Durban ending 2-2, also enabled Cape Verde to finish above the North Africans in the table. "Our qualification is crazy. This ...
Igesund proud of Bafana effort Bafana has qualified Siyabonga Sangweni equalised for Bafana Bafana with less than five minutes left on Sunday as the Africa Cup of Nations hosts booked their place in the tournament quarter-finals for the first time in more than a decade with a 2-2 draw against Morocco. "It was a very tough game out there tonight," said Bafana coach Gordon Igesund. "We did what we had to do and achieved our first objective. The next 20 hours we're just going to relax. We can now look forward to our next game. "I'm very proud of the team. I feel very proud because South Africa will also feel very proud." Issam El Adoua fired the North Africans in front after a 10th minute Itumeleng Khune error, before May Mahlangu equalised with an exquisitely curled effort into the top corner with less than 20 minutes remaining. Substitute Abdelilah Hafidi then restored Morocco's advantage in the 82nd minute, before Orlando Pirates defender Sangweni netted his second goal of the tournament, bending in to th ...
February 2: South Africa will probably play DR Congo (or Mali) in Durban, Cape Verde v Ghana in Port Elizabeth... in with a shout
BBC Sport's Nick Cavell in Port Elizabeth: "Cape Verde coach Lucio Antunes runs round the pitch with a national flag as all the players celebrate on the pitch." That is probably the most incredible 10 minutes of tournament football I have ever seen. South Africa and Cape Verde qualify, Morocco and Angola go out. South Africa were always going through with results the way they were but with 10 minutes to go it was Angola joining them, with nine minutes it was Cape Verde, with eight minutes it was Morocco and in the final minute it was Cape Verde again.

Jerry Akaminko is an apology of a defender By Raymond Yeboah The fear and spirit surrounding the name of Black Stars in African football was put to shame by Kwasi Appiah and his horrendous defenders on Sunday afternoon in Port Elizabeth, South Africa. Disregarding patriotic analysis by the nation's media is what is killing Ghanaian football. Ghana's opening match against DR Congo vindicates my earlier article, Black Stars squad lacks bite Any good coach will never put Jerry Akaminko in the central role of defence for a crucial tournament as the Africa Nations’ Cup. The guy was more or less a spectator in the defense. True, Ghana do struggle in their opening matches in every major tournament though but this current Black Stars under Kwasi Appiah and his entire technical team is the poorest one I have ever seen. The calibre of the opposition, a DR Congo team that had internal wrangling, all sorts of problems that even made their coach Claude Le Roy resign before changing his mind later, a team that refuse ...

Gaborone targetted for Afcon cup ticket sales In a last gasp effort to improve slow ticket sales of the Africa Cup of Nations, organisers in Rustenburg in South Africa are now targeting football supporters in Botswana who regularly cross the border. The Local Organising Committee is concerned at the slow rate of ticket sales in Rustenburg and Port Elizabeth and, by venturing into Botswana, the organisers hope to push up the attendance figures of the Group D matches that will be played at the Royal Bafokeng Sports Palace. Group D is made up of tournament favourites Ivory Coast, Tunisia, Togo and Algeria. The committee in Rustenburg is to start selling tickets for the tournament in Gaborone today. Stands where tickets will be sold have been set up at the Rail Park Mall in Gaborone. Fans can also buy their tickets at post offices in Gaborone.

Message from the President : EP Cricket Hosting international events is a massive privilege for any city and Port Elizabeth has been very fortunate in that in the last few 2 months we have hosted the New Zealand cricket side in two matches, the Rugby Sevens and now we are a host city for the Afcon cup. This is a huge measure of confidence in the ability of Port Elizabeth to host international events and everyone, our sporting officials, the metro and its people need to embrace these opportunities. The Afcon cup starts this Sunday on the 20th January at the NMB Stadium and affords PE another opportunity to show the rest of South Africa why we believe we should be the preferred sporting destination in this country. I am therefore urging all cricket people in the region to support our soccer family and not only embrace Africa's premier competition but also to go out there and support the event. For PE to be a success, we need PE people to support PE events. Port Elizabeth is hosting some top African sides in ...

South Africa has beaten New Zealand in the second test in Port Elizabeth yesterday by an innings and 193 runs. South Africa's Dale Steyn has taken his 19th five-wicket haul in the first innings. I expect the ODI series to be a lot more competitive.-Lourens
South Africa v New Zealand, 2nd Test, Port Elizabeth, 4th day South Africa wrap up huge innings victory Andrew McGlashan It took South Africa less than a session to complete a crushing innings-and-193-runs victory in Port Elizabeth. Despite more resistance the second time from New Zealand it was only ever a matter of time, and the second new ball hurried the game to a conclusion with Dale Steyn taking his match haul to eight wickets. Although two Tests is barely enough to constitute a series this is still South Africa's first whitewash since 2008. It is nothing less than what was expected, but the professionalism and efficiency of their displays, even taking into account the paucity of the opposition, showed the hunger they have to keep winning and not lose their focus after reaching, and retaining, the No. 1 ranking. BJ Watling and Dean Brownlie, the two shining lights in New Zealand's generally dismal batting, carried their fifth-wicket stand to 98 and both reached gutsy half-centuries, but Jacques Kall ...
Cricket New Zealand show fight against South Africa New Zealand fought bravely to move to 157 for four in their second innings, following on and still 247 runs behind South Africa, at the close of the third day's play in the second Test in Port Elizabeth. Unbeaten pair BJ Watling (41) and Dean Brownlie (44) provided stern resistance and the duo looked relatively untroubled as they added an unbroken fifth-wicket partnership of 73 off 27.2 overs to steer their team to the close of play. Opener Martin Guptill contributed 48 before being bowled by seamer Rory Kleinveldt who went on to have Daniel Flynn (0) caught behind with his next delivery. Kleinveldt ended the day with two for 31 while left-arm spinner Robin Peterson, who accounted for Brendon McCullum (11) and Kane Williamson (11), claimed two for 29. The tourists showed far more determination with the bat than they had in their first innings when they subsided to 121 all out in reply to the top-ranked hosts's 525-8 declared. Watling provided the one shi ...

Ayew hamstring concern for Ghana. Ghana midfield star Andre Ayew could miss the Africa Cup of Nations in South Africa this month after injuring a hamstring while training with French club Marseille. Although the seriousness of the problem is not yet known, Ghana officials are insisting the 2011 BBC African Footballer of the Year joins a training camp beginning this weekend in Abu Dhabi. "We have written to Marseille telling them to release the player as we want to check him out ourselves," a spokesman for the 'Black Stars' told reporters in Accra. Ghana are scheduled to play warm-up matches against Egypt and Tunisia in the United Arab Emiratesbefore heading for Port Elizabeth and Group B fixturesagainst the Democratic Republic of Congo, Mali and Niger. The loss of Ayew – a son of former African Footballer ofthe Year Abedi 'Pele' Ayew – would be a massive blow as Ghana seek a first Cup of Nations title since defeating hosts Libya on penalties in Tripoli 31 years ago. Ayew was part of the 'Black Stars' ...
04 January 2013 SHACK FIRES IN PE Greetings of Peace Dear Recipients It is the most unbelievable beginning to a New Year in respect of human tragedy in South Africa; the death toll from road deaths is horrendous; shack fires on New Year's day kill 3 and displace 4000; and now another crisis as 2000 are rendered homeless in a shack fire in Port Elizabeth yesterday. Ford Sierra XR6 Manufactured by: Ford Motor Company of South Africa, Port Elizabeth, Cape Province, Republic of South Africa. Years produced: 1984 - 1992 Price at launch: unknown As the Ford Cortina was replaced by the Ford Sierra, not only in Europe, but also in South Africa, the Cortina XR6 was in 1984 replaced by the Sierra XR6. This was available only as a four door hatchback, and was powered by the same 140 HP 3 litre (183 cu. in.) Essex engine as its Cortina predecessor. However, this engine was coupled to a five-speed gearbox. From 1984 to 1992 most changes to the Sierra were cosmetic, i.e. the introduction of alloy wheels in 1986, different seats, instrumentation and decals. Mechanical differences to the 1986 Sierra were an uprated 5-speed gearbox and a 3.36 differential. Around 1986 to 1987 a factory XR6 Alpina Bi-turbo was produced. This car was endowed with a top sped of 231 km/h (144 mph). (The standard XR6 had a top speed of 203 km/h (127 mph)). In mid 1989 the South African Sierra was given ...

To anybody out there that can assist me. I have a Chev Captiva that has been problematic almost since the day that I bought it beginnin of the year. For some reason, I cannot get the email adresses of any of GM's Directors - cannot get past the regional manager who says he speaks on behalf of GM South Africa. I want the satisfaction of knowing that I wrote to them directly, so no one can claim that "they did not know". So, especially you Port Elizabeth people - can you help? My captiva is and has not been a pleasure. Pure frustratation. Maybe they all are like that or I got the "dud"? Since February, they have replaced the window switch, repaired the door lock, replaced the r'r link rod that had fallen off, replaced the V belt and, believe it or not, replaced the Transmission (less than 20 000 kilos). Thats right - replaced the transmission. Maybe this is acceptable to General Motors?

It was important not to “overreact” to “short-term turbulence” in South Africa’s macroeconomic environment with unnecessary “doom and gloom”, said National Association of Automobile Manufacturers of South Africa (Naamsa) president and Volkswagen Group South Africa MD Dave Powels at the South African Automotive Week held in Port Elizabeth. Referring to the labour unrest seen in recent months, Powels said on Wednesday that it was his job to be realistic, noting that a 2% growth rate in South Africa next year would still have a multiplier effect on new vehicle sales in the country. He said Naamsa’s forecast was for a 6% to 8% growth in new vehicle sales in 2013 over 2012. Powels told Engineering News Online that it was important to remember that South Africa was a “developing economy and a young democracy”. “We are a country in transition.” He said Naamsa understood and accepted that mistakes would be made, and had been made when looking at the recent labour unrest that had plagued es ...

Celebrated 35 years with the Bank today with my co-workers being good enough to post notices around the office of all that was going on in the world in 1977. I asked why there was no mention of the death of Steven Biko to which everyone replied Steven who? "September 77, Port Elizabeth weather fine, it was business as usual, in police room 619". 25 years ago Peter Gabriel wrote this song about Steven Biko who was killed by the police in South Africa 35 years ago. I joined the Bank in September 1977 and will always remember this from the opening words to the song "Biko". Jean and I will be seeing Peter in Las Vegas on October 5th. Do you qualify for a British Passport, or know someone who might qualify? Philip Gamble, who runs our UK Visa and Nationality business here in London, is widely regarded as the world's authority on British Nationality. Philip will be conducting a series of British Nationality Seminars in Eastern and Southern Africa in October. The trip includes seminars in Kenya, Tanzania, Zambia, Zimbabwe, Swaziland and South Africa. The presentations will cover claims to British Nationality and recent Immigration and Citizenship Law changes. From Philip's experience of the subject, this should interest any person who has: A family link to the UK, OR A parent (or grandparent) born in a country that is different to their own country of birth. The seminars in South Africa (in Johannesburg, Pretoria, Durban, East London, Port Elizabeth, Stellenbosch and Cape Town) will also include a presentation on our Passport to Portugal service. This involves a property investment in Portugal, which allows the investor residency in the ...
The only problem in South Africa is Zuma, this boy did not attend the Youth Celebrations in Port Elizabeth because he was scared of being booed and decided to spend the whole month abroad. Now the women celebrate their month and he decide to join them because he benefit a lot from the women. Cde Nelson Mandela and Oliver Tambo would cry if they can be told about this ANC [2007-current] operates...
Just heard I am the top agent for cumulative commission to date for RE/MAX Eastern Cape and Garden Route. I had 7 sales last week and this week I am on nr 4 so far. The ONLY reason for this result is because I only put my trust in God. I believe that we are in this world but not of this world. Do not look at all the negatives because it's easy in the current economic climate to be negative. I am always positive about the future of South Africa and especially Port Elizabeth because I do not look unto men for help . Trust only in God
R60bn investment plan for E Cape 1 June 2007 South Africa's Eastern Cape has launched a public-private initiative that aims to attract R60-billion worth of investment into the largely rural, eastern part of the province over the next 10 years. Planned projects - designed to capitalise on the region's high rainfall and large labour supply - include a new dam for hydroelectric power and irrigation and an agricultural irrigation scheme. A special purpose, government-owned company - Asgisa Eastern Cape Pty Ltd - has been launched to oversee the projects. Eastern Cape Premier Nosimo Balindlela said in a statement last month that the projects driven by Asgisa Eastern Cape would help develop Mthatha into the third major city in the province, after Port Elizabeth and East London. The first "mega-project" will be the multi-billion rand Umzimvubu Basin Water Management project, which will be linked to an irrigation scheme covering a large section of the former Transkei. According to Business Day, a dam will be cons ...

Shocking staff: Pmlive Safm FRIDAY PHONE TOPIC: South Africa is the fastest growing country for infidelity, beating even Italian lovers! And believe it or not, of the top city and suburban infidelity hotspots announced, Randfontein takes number 1 spot. This deceptively unassuming Gauteng town is in fact the cheating epicentre of South Africa, followed by Pretoria, Johannesburg and Port Elizabeth in the Eastern Cape Province in the number 10 spot. Based on an analysis of South Africa's 96,000 members and a survey of over 3-thousand members of AshleyMadison.com, members with the highest number of affair partners are in Durban; the most children - Johannesburg; and the most most single female members - Cape Town. Our phone topic today, what do you make of this survey?

Tony Ehrenreich's proposal to convert the Cape Town Stadium into low-cost housing provokes thoughts of an interesting exercise. Whilst many people sneer at such ideas, my immediate reaction was "GIVE HIM A CHANCE!" Let Cosatu come forward with the plans and the funds and then let the city decide. If the stadium was so poorly conceived, surely there is something to be done with it. My next thought is for somebody else to put forward a counter proposal. What is very clear is that South Africa has paid and is continuing to pay for a sport event which, despite its apparent success as a spectacle, has been a fiscal nightmare. Just a couple of weeks ago I heard that Amazulu had been spirited away from Durban to play their "home fixtures" at Port Elizabeth's Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium? I am tempted to use an ugly epithet here but honestly what is that all about? Before anybody launches into an explanation about finance, I have read the reasons and some of them are reasonable but honestly this is crazy when we ha ...
Steve Biko was one of South Africa's most significant political activists and a leading founder of South Africa's Black Consciousness Movement. His death in police detention in 1977 led to his being hailed as a martyr of the anti-Apartheid struggle. Date of birth: 18 December 1946, King William's Town, Eastern Cape, South Africa Date of death: 12 September 1977, Pretoria prison cell, South Africa An Early Life From an early age Steve Biko showed an interest in anti-Apartheid politics. After being expelled from his first school, Lovedale, in the Eastern Cape for 'anti-establishment' behavior, he was transferred to a Roman Catholic boarding school in Natal. From there he enrolled as a student at the University of Natal Medical School (in the university's Black Section). Whilst at medical school Biko became involved with the National Union of South African Students (NUSAS). But the union was dominated by white liberals and failed to represent the needs of black students, so Biko resigned in 1969 and founded ...

How an Ethiopian slave became a South African teacher Sandra Rowoldt ShellUniversity of Cape Town Bisho Jarsa, trained as a domestic servant, went on to become a teacher When Neville Alexander used to visit his maternal grandmother Bisho Jarsa as a boy, he never suspected the extraordinary story of how she had come from Ethiopia to the South African city of Port Elizabeth. Bisho was one of a group of Ethiopian slaves freed by a British warship in 1888 off the coast of Yemen, then taken round the African coast and placed in the care of missionaries in South Africa. "We were overawed in her presence and by the way she would mumble to herself in this language none of us understood," recalls Mr Alexander, now 74. This was Ethiopia's Oromo language, Bisho's mother tongue, which she reverted to as she grew older. Mr Alexander, who was a political prisoner in the 1960s, sharing Robben Island with Nelson Mandela, is today one of South Africa's most eminent educationists. He remembers his younger siblings asking t ...

AN EVENTS organiser confessed in church to the alleged rape of his 15-year-old cousin. He was released on R300 bail by the East London Magistrate's Court yesterday. His bail conditions set out by the court provisionally restrict him from returning to the Assemblies of God Church in Sydenham, Port Elizabeth, where he reportedly stood up during a service and made the confession to aghast congregants. He later handed himself over to Port Elizabeth police. The court yesterday heard how the alleged rape would never have been reported to the police had the 35-year-old accused not confessed. It is alleged that the accused – who lives with his family on a farm in Colchester and works in PE – sexually molested his male cousin while visiting East London in October last year. The young complainant failed to report the alleged incident. The admissibility of the reported confession will be argued in a trial court. Yesterday, the court heard how the accused had a previous conviction of sexual assault dating back to ...
