It is in the early hours of Friday just after (12:00) CAT,Millions of fans and supporters from around South Africa and the World at large are eagerly waiting for Shakes Mashaba's first squad announcement as Bafana Bafana coach since he was named as Gordon Igesund's successor last month. As per usual there is bound to be debates as to who should and shouldn't have been in the squad, and this time it was no different.Big name and on form players are not in the squad (Letsholonyane , Serero , Mabena , Mashamaite...) and others are not in the squad and the doomsayers are at it again saying it will be all "doom & gloom" for Bafana Bafana. The fact of the matter is with a new coach there is bound to be new changes, and drastic decisions have to be made yet again be adressed;one such example is Louis Van Gaal at Manchester United, having had a good pre-season with the Red Devils everyone thought it was going to be an easy win against Swansea but they had another thing com ...

WorldCupResults Iran 0 - 0 Nigeria Iran and Nigeria played out the first draw of the 2014 World Cup as their Group F opener ended goalless. Nigeria dominated possession but created few chances against a disciplined side managed by ex-Manchester United coach Carlos Queiroz. That draw now means Nigeria have not won a World Cup match in nine attempts - the longest streak in the competition. They might need to rethink their strategy against Bosnia-Hercegovina if they do not want that run to continue. Germany 4 - 0 Portugal Thomas Muller scored the first hat-trick of the 2014 World Cup as Germany produced a ruthless attacking display to destroy 10-man Portugal and open their World Cup campaign in style. The 24-year-old, who scored five goals to win the Golden Boot in South Africa four years ago, took his World Cup total to eight with a sensational performance. The Bayern Munich forward dispatched an early penalty, drilled home Germany's third and tapped in a fourth, with centre-back Mats Hummels heading the se ...

Nigeria face a test of their credentials when they meet a stubborn Iran side in their Fifa World Cup Group F opener at the Arena da Baixada on Monday night. The match should be interesting because this will be Nigeria's chance to secure 3 points, which will give the fans a strong hope of going to the next round. Iran's performance in pre-World Cup friendlies was far from encouraging. After failing to score against Belarus (0-0) and Montenegro (0-0), they finally netted against Angola (1-1). They won against Trinidad and Tobago (2-0). Iran did not qualify in 2010, but Former Manchester United coach Carlos Queiroz, who had also managed South Africa and Portugal before, guided them to finish on top of the Asian Qualifying Group A. The Asians will depend a lot on Fulham winger Ashkan Dejagah, who had a decent English Premier League season. Nigeria defeated Spain 3-2 in the 1998 World Cup. They seems to have an uncanny connection with Argentina as they have been in the same group with the South American giant ...
South Africa fire coach Igesund (AFP) Monday 2 June 2014 Share South Africa coach Gordon Igesund was fired Monday for poor results during his two-year contract. The 57-year-old failed to meet mandates to reach the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations semi-finals and to qualify for the 2014 World Cup in Brazil. Portuguese Carlos Queiroz and Nigerian Stephen Keshi, who will coach Iran and Nigeria respectively at the World Cup, have been linked with the post. Former Real Madrid manager and Manchester United assistant manager Queiroz had a heart-breaking previous spell in charge of South Africa. He successfully guided the country through the 2002 World Cup qualifying campaign only to be axed after a Cup of Nations quarter-finals loss a few months before the global showpiece. A former coach of Mali and Togo, Keshi exceeded expectations last year when he steered Nigeria to the Cup of Nations title in South Africa. "The process of finding a new coach will start after this press conference," said national football associat ...
Since liverpool last won the league Raheem Sterling, Coutinho, Jon Flanaghan, Jordan Henderson and Victor Moses were all yet to be born. Liverpool had only 3 non-British or Irish players in their first team squad. Sir Alex Ferguson wouldn’t win his first trophy with Manchester United for another few weeks (the 1990 FA Cup Final). United finished 13th in the League that year, with just 48 points. Current EPL teams Fulham, Swansea, Cardiff and Wigan were all still in the third division. Milwall, Coventry, Wimbledon and Luton Town were all playing top division footy. Liverpool had just won their 10th League title in 14 years. That was nearly 24 years ago now. Nelson Mandela was elected President of South Africa, and the Apartheid regime was abolished. Nelson Mandela died. Margaret Thatcher resigned as Prime Minister of the UK. The Woods World Cup Countdown 24th : Japan This is a fifth consecutive World Cup for Japan, but they are yet to progress beyond the round of 16. Last time out in South Africa, they were beaten on penalties in the R16 by Paraguay after progressing through a relatively soft group. The Samurai Blues sauntered through AFC qualifying, but given the confederation's status as the weakest in world football, that is hardly an achievement. In a group Colombia, Ivory Coast and Greece, Japan will simply be overmatched in all three games and I expect the best they could hope for would be a tie against either Ivory Coast or Greece, though the prospect seems unlikely. Player to watch: Shinji Kagawa. Known to most watchers of the Premier League, Kagawa has so far failed to nail down a spot in an overcrowded Manchester United attack. Despite this, Kagawa certainly has the ability and tenacity to unlock a defence and win a game.
Netherlands coach Louis Van Gaal who is close to agreeing terms with Manchester United unveiled his provisional 30-man Fifa World Cup squad. with PSG right-back Gregory Van der Wiel and goalkeeper Maarten Stekelenburg notable absentees. Louis Van Gaal has decided against taking a risk with Van der Wiel as he’s been suffering with tendinitis in recent weeks. The absence of the 26-year-old right-back means only eight members of the 30-man squad featured at the 2010 World Cup in South Africa, when the Netherlands lost to Spain in the final. Seven of the 30-man list come from Dutch championship runners-up Feyenoord. Defenders John Heitinga and Joris Mathijsen are also missing but Robin van Persie and Wesley Sneijder are included. Van Gaal recently expressing doubts as to the condition of the Galatasaray playmaker. Who Said We Can't Improvise?? 1- While in England, Liverpool believe they are the most succesful British team because of their Champions League achievements, Manchester United want to be called the most succesful because they have won more league titles in total. Orlando Pirates believe they are South Africa's best ever because of their Champions League crown, Kaizer Chiefs believe their 11 league titles make them the best. 2- For a talented goalpoacher Luis Suarez who is always follwed by controversy for some strange behaviour, there is an equally talented Mabhuti Khenyeza who is always on the wrong side of headlines but knows where the goal posts are located. 3-For a young Mario Balotelli who was oftenly misjudged by people as wayward, there wass an Andile Jali who is young and talented but was often misjudged for a wayward someone. 4-Sir Alex Ferguson said he would rather have a one footed Ryan Giggs than a number of average two footed players. Books of condolence were also set up across the UK including in Brixton, where huge crowds greeted Mr Mandela during his state visit to Britain in 1996, and at City Chambers, in Glasgow, where Mr Mandela visited in 1993, and which awarded him the Freedom of the City in 1981 while a prisoner under South Africa's Apartheid regime. Further crowds gathered at the statue of the former president in Parliament Square to pay their respects and leave gifts. The first tribute at a Premier League match will be at the Manchester United v Newcastle game at 12:45 GMT. The honour will be repeated at six other games on Saturday, two on Sunday, and at the Swansea v Hull match on Monday. On Friday, the Queen led the UK in sending her "sincere condolences" to the family of Nelson Mandela and to the people of South Africa. She said she was "deeply saddened" to learn the news, saying Mr Mandela had "worked tirelessly" for the good of his country, and adding that his legacy was "the peaceful South Africa we see today". Cardiff City striker, Osaze Odemwingie, has stated his desire to represent Nigeria at the Fifa World Cup in Brazil in 2014. The former West Brom striker, who has 55 caps for Nigeria was last involved with the national team about a year ago and has since been overlooked by coach Stephen Keshi. Odemwingie, who made a deadline day move from West Brom to Cardiff City in the summer, wants to join the likes of Gary Medel and Kim Bo-Kyung, whose countries, Chile and South Korea respectively, have both qualified to appear in Brazil. "I was in the Nigeria squad for the last World Cup Finals in South Africa and I would love the chance to go again," Odemwengie told Welsh portal, WalesOnline. Odemwingie believes if he has a massive season for Cardiff City, then he is in with a shout to be recalled by Nigeria to fight for a shirt in the team "Why not? Certainly, I believe I have a chance and when it comes I would be delighted," he said after Cardiff drew 2-2 with Manchester United last weekend. "I haven't been selecte ...

Pretoria - Mamelodi Sundowns coach Pitso Mosimane called his team the "Manchester United of South Africa" after they became the third league leaders within four days on Wednesday. Former national coach Mosimane was upbeat despite an unimpressive 2-1 home win over Free State Stars in a Premiership game that came to life only in the second half. "We displayed the character that has made Manchester United such a force in English football," proud Mosimane said at Loftus Versfeld stadium in Pretoria. "My team never loses hope. It would have been easier for them to sit back and settle for a draw with five minutes left.
HIGHLIGHTS ABOUT John Mikel Obi. Mikel's strength on the ball and natural aggression make him an asset for both club and country. Mikel began his career with Plateau United in his homeland before spells with Ajax Cape Town in South Africa and Norwegian side Lyn Oslo. He soon became one of the most sought-after young players in Europe and in 2005 Manchester United beat a host of interested parties to his signature. However, Mikel had other ideas, and despite appearing at a press conference in a United shirt, the midfielder claimed he had been pressured into the move and wanted to move to Chelsea instead. A legal dispute ensued but eventually the Chelsea deal was done, costing the Blues £16 million in a complex judgement that involved money being paid to both United and Lyn. Jose Mourinho was delighted to get his man and Mikel started 24 games and scored twice in his first season, as well as winning the African Young Player of the Year award for a second successive time. The midfielder's development contin ...
Manchester United's Belgian-born Adnan Januzaj could qualify for England in the future by residency. Asked about the issue, Wilshere, 21, said: "If you live in England for five years it doesn't make you English." Wenger told BBC Sport: "I agree with him. I always said also an Englishman should manage the England team." The Frenchman warned that national teams risk replicating clubs, who buy players to represent them regardless of their passport or nationality. Wilshere, who has 10 England caps, said his comments were not in reference to Januzaj, who England manager Roy Hodgson has confirmed he is monitoring. South Africa-born England cricketer Kevin Pietersen responded to Wilshere's comments by asking the Gunners player: "Interested to know how you define foreigner...? Would that include me, [former England cricket captain Andrew] Strauss, [cricketer Jonathan] Trott, [cricketer Matt Prior, [golfer] Justin Rose, [cyclist Chris] Froome, [runner] Mo Farah? "Same difference.. It's about representing your coun ...

KESHI GETTING BETTER... You have to truly love this beautiful game to stay awake till 2am just to watch a friendly match. Well, I did as I always have done. In my humble opinion, the presence of Mikel Obi, Victor Moses and Emmanuel Emenike hugely aided our Nations Cup win in South Africa. Against CONCAFAF and Olympic Champions, Mexico, Keshi started with Ejide, Efe, Omeruo, Oboabona, Echejile, Onazi, Ogu, Mba, Odumadi, Ideye and Akpala in a somehow tentative 4 -3 -3 formation. The afore-mentioned trio were not in Texas while Enyeama was on the bench! The North Americans started on fire and it was somewhat of a miracle that the match still stood at 0 - 0 after 20 minutes. The trio of Chicharito, Pablo Barrera and De Nigins ceaselessly raided the Nigerian defense with Ejide making one particularly excellent save after the Manchester United goal poacher had rattled the upright. But not for long...the Man U hitman would put his side ahead in 21 minutes. Echejile, criminally unstable in his left back position, ...
By Omari Jackson   Ex- Man U midfielder Quinton Fortune told journalists yesterday that Liberia’s soccer legend, Gorge Weah played a part in his life, and was one of the inspirations that motivated him in his career.   Fortune told journalists at the Mamba Point Hotel in Monrovia yesterday that along with the motivation, he disciplined himself since passion for the game alone could not have gotten him to the height he achieved in his football career.   Fortune is a South African, with 46 caps, including appearances in the1998 and 2002 World Cups and played for Manchester United, Atletico Madrid, Bolton Wanderers and Doncaster Rovers.   “I was determined to play, whether it was for money or not,” he said, “I had the passion for the game and eventually things went the right way for me.”   Fortune left South Africa at the age of 14 for England and while in school played for Tottenham Hotspur junior team.    He said it was because of his passion for soccer as a youth that he saw Liberia’s G ...

If 2012 African Footballer of the Year Yaya Toure thought a change of scenery would bring a change of luck at the weekend, he was sadly mistaken. A week after his Ivory Coast team were bundled out of the Cup of Nations by Nigeria in South Africa, the English Premier League title hopes of Toure and his Manchester City team-mates suffered a massive blow. The title-holders slumped 3-1 at promoted Southampton to fall 12 points behind leaders Manchester United and Toure looked off the pace as he swapped the heat of the South African Highveld for the chill of southern England. ENGLAND EMMANUEL ADEBAYOR (Tottenham) The Togo striker made his belated return to Spurs after Cup of Nations duty when he came on as a substitute in a 2-1 win over Newcastle. Adebayor had frustrated Spurs by returning later than expected and was left on the bench for the first 69 minutes at White Hart Lane even though boss Andre Villas-Boas had no other fit senior forwards. PAPISS CISSE (Newcastle) The Senegal forward was unable to get on ...

SA Hope to record First Win against Angola South Africa are set to ring the changes for the game against Angola as the Africa Cup of Nations hosts look to kick-start their tournament. Bafana Bafana could only manage a goalless draw in their opening game against Cape Verde on Saturday. Consequently, striker Katlego Mphela, returning from a long-term injury, could come in for Lehlohonolo Majoro. Midfielders Kagisho Dikgacoi and Lerato Chabangu are injured, meaning Oldham's Dean Furman is likely to return. Angola, meanwhile, will be reliant on the goalscoring prowess of Former Manchester United forward Manucho. The Real Valladolid striker has scored an impressive 21 goals in 38 international appearances, meaning he will be the dangerman for Angola. Coach Luccio Antunes has a full squad to choose from, with no injuries reported from the goalless draw with Morocco. Angola are looking to record a first-ever win over South Africa in the tournament. Gordon Igesund, South Africa coach: "There is a lot of talk abou ...
It’s not a case of sitting on the fence. I’ve simply failed to dissect the criteria used to pick these great players. The selection process is so consistently undefined. In the 2007/2008 season when Manchester United won both the Premier League and the Champions League, Ronaldo was unstoppable, scoring 44 goals that season. He won the Ballon d’Or consequently. Equally, there wasn’t any dispute when Messi took the 2009 following his treble (La Liga, Copa del Rey and Champions League titles) with Barcelona in the 2008/2009 season. But in the 2009/2010 season when clearly Dutch midfielder Wesley Sneijder and Argentine striker Diego Milito were instrumental in leading Internazionale to a treble, neither of them made it even on the short-list of the final three. In addition, Sneijder was impressive at the 2010 World Cup, leading Holland to the final. Yet, even if Messi underperformed in South Africa, the Ballon d’Or went to him. This made me wonder and while I still follow the proceedings, the Ballon ...
Tough choice on another brilliant summer's day (in most places anyway) ... get out and about in the sunshine or feast on sport from the couch. So what have you been doing? If it's sports watching there has been so much to pick from. What have you been taking in or have you been surfing? There's the NFL play-offs (49ers v Packers at the moment), HRV Cup cricket (Firebirds v Northern Knights), one-day international cricket (Australia v Sri Lanka), A League football (Wellington Phoenix v Wanderers) and rugby union (national sevens). Still to come in the early hours two great English Premier League football encounters (Manchester United v Liverpool and Arsenal v Manchester City) plus later tonight - but only for the brave - the second cricket Test between South Africa and the Black Caps (not pretty at all unfortunately).
HOW AFCON2013 AFFECTED EPL The 2013 Africa Cup of Nations kicks off on January 19 when hosts South Africa tackle Cape Verde in Johannesburg and few sides in the English top flight will have their squads untouched by the competition. Defending champions Manchester City already have a seven-point gap on leaders Manchester United to chase down and their cause will not be helped by the absences of brothers Kolo and Yaya Toure, who play for the Ivory Coast. Yaya, 29, was the driving force behind last season's title success but his absence for the 2012 Cup of Nations coincided with a spell that saw City eliminated from the League Cup by Liverpool, knocked out of the FA Cup by United, and beaten 1-0 by Everton in the league. His elder brother, Kolo, has enjoyed a more prominent role this season, having established himself as the first-choice deputy to centre-backs Vincent Kompany and Matija Nastasic, and City are loath to lose both men. HOW IS YOUR TEAM AFFECTED?

Manchester City manager Roberto Mancini admits midfielder Yaya Toure is likely to be unavailable for five weeks due to his Africa Cup of Nations involvement. Moroccan midfielder, Adel Taarabt has lifted the lid on the request from his boss at QPR, Harry Redknapp requesting he ditches the 2013 Afcon. The 23-year-old is at crossroads with featuring for Morocco at the Africa Cup of Nations and staying back in England to save QPR's quest to keep their top flight status. Taarabt is now faced with "a difficult decision." "It's a difficult decision because the manager asked if I could stay. The EPL- A £5billion Beast 13 November 2012 The English Premier League expects to bank a record-smashing excess of £5billion this year from television rights revenue. The money is coming from the domestic market and from the globe’s voracious appetite for English top-flight football. Thanks to the desire of every corner of the globe to see household names like Chelsea and Manchester United in action, the Premier League winners next season are likely to receive a prize of more than £100million. The Premier League has already signed deals with British broadcasters worth £3.018bn, and has also almost completed its negotiations with overseas broadcasters. The league expects to comfortably surpass its previous record of £1.4bn raised abroad, to take the total beyond the wince-inducing £5bn mark. Companies from the US and South America, South Africa and sub-Saharan Africa, China, Singapore and Scandinavia have all already bought the rights to broadcast EPL football. Asia, Australasia, the Middle East an ...

After being absolutely spoilt for sport over the summer, the Premier League is back this weekend and fans will return to cheering on a new multi-million-pound signing rather than those who could go faster, higher, stronger in Stratford. Thanks to Euro 2012, the cricket Test series between England and South Africa, and, of course, the Olympics, the swing of Sergio Aguero's boot which so dramatically won the title for Manchester City just more than three months ago still seems like only yesterday. However, almost under the radar, much has changed in the world of the Premier League and many questions are surrounding the 2012/13 kick-off. Can City defend their title? Will Robin van Persie make the difference for Manchester United? Has Chelsea's spending turned them into contenders? Is Brendan Rodgers the right man for Liverpool? Who will be relegated? In short, welcome back. Roberto Mancini's Manchester City begin the defence of their title by hosting Southampton at the Etihad Stadium on Sunday. The reigning ...

James had gone Awol on trials in South Africa where he distinguished himself in a pre-season friendly game against Manchester United, and was thus unavailable for selection in his teams' 1-0 loss to Shooting Stars of Ibadan last weekend, which saw the former league leaders relinquish their hold at the top and dropping to the third spot behind Kano Pillars, and surprise contenders Lobi Stars. Insiders at the Rangers camp have further revealed that Okwuosa will continue to act as captain of the club for the remainder of the season, as the initial ban imposed on the player has been temporarily lifted, in order to a ...

I had the privilege of watching Ajax Cape Town v Manchester United @ Cape Town (Green Point) Stadium this afternoon. I was in Pretoria in 2010 so it was a first for me - the Fan Walk, the Stadium. We cut it very fine - Hamish Jeppe, Luke Edwards, Rhonwyn Michaels, Delano Chengan and I - we were seated @ 1455 and the game started @ 1500! To add to our stress, Luke's ticket was problematic - and he was initially denied access while we were already in the stadium. Although I'm a diehard Man fan (and have been since the halycon days of George Best), I felt that the ref was biased towards Man Untd. Where there were marginal calls (for a foul or free kick), it always went United's way. Why, even the extra 4 minutes at the end of the match - ostensibily for injury (when United equalised) was very generous - there were hardly any stoppages in the match. Hats off to Ajax - they did Cape Town and South Africa proud with their brand of football. Now why can't we have this calibre of match every month and attract 55 ...

Manchester United started a six-game pre-season world tour with a 1-0 win over AmaZulu before a capacity 50,000 crowd at Moses Mabhida Stadium Wednesday. Federico Macheda scored the winner midway through the first half for the Red Devils, who came closest to increasing the lead just before time when another Italian, substitute Davide Petrucci, rattled the crossbar. It was a closer match than anticipated, with many South Africans believing mid-table AmaZulu would be swept aside by the former European champions even though they were lacking many first choices like Wayne Rooney. Political icon Nelson Mandela, the first democratically elected president of South Africa, was remembered before the kick-off with the teams wishing him a happy 94th birthday in song. United left new signing Shinji Kagawa from Japan on the bench as they started with a mix of experienced stars like captain Rio Ferdinand and young players Robbie Brady, Scott Wootton, Frederic Veseli and Jesse Lingard. The Red Devils were quick into the ...

Manchester United are closing in on a £16million deal to land England and Everton star Leighton Baines. United boss Sir Alex Ferguson made Baines one of his main summer targets and hopes to complete the deal before the end of this week. Fergie views Baines as United’s long-term successor to Patrice Evra at left-back and is hoping to sign him in time to take him on the club’s summer tour of South Africa and China next week. It’s understood United will pay an initial £12m for Baines, which could rise by another £4m depending on add-ons. Toffees boss David Moyes is reluctant to sell Baines, but knows he cannot turn down such a tempting offer or persuade the defender to stay at Goodison Park.

England striker Danny Welbeck has tipped defending world and European champions Spain to beat Italy in Sunday's Euro 2012 final in Kiev. Vicente del Bosque's team are looking to become the first nation to win three consecutive major tournaments, having emerged victorious in Austria and Switzerland at Euro 2008 beforewinning the 2010 World Cup in South Africa. Spain are yet to suffer defeat this time around and beat Portugal on penalties to set up the clash against Cesare Prandelli's team at the Olympic Stadium. "It's hard to look beyond Spain," Welbeck told the Times of India. "They have the experience of winning big tournaments — they've won the last two. And they have fantastic players who know how to play big games." Welbeck was playing in his first tournament for England but they crashed out in familiar fashion at the quarter-final stage after a penalty shoot-out defeat against Italy. Roy Hodgson's team did not lose any of their four matches in normal time, however, and the Manchester United star wa ...
With the exit of England and Portugal from the Euros 2012 Finals, we are glad to announce that none of Man United's exports to the competition sustained any injury that worth any serious trouble. Chris Smalling, Vidic and others are doing just fine and rearing to go for the pre-season preparation in South Africa. We rue the missed penalty of Ashley Young and strongly believe that his worth in the team must not be measured based on a kick that went the wrong way. Up United! Glory, Glory, Manchester United!!!
