South Africa, Mozambique To Sign MoU On Tackling Rhino Poaching PRETORIA, April 10 (BERNAMA- NNN-SA NEWS) -- South Africa and Mozambique will sign a memorandum of understanding (MoU) next week in the field of biodiversity, conservation and management which will help in the fight against rhino poaching. The MoU will be signed by Water and Environmental Affairs Minister Edna Molewa and Mozambique's Tourism Minister Carvalho Muaria in Skukuza in South Africa's Kruger National Park. The MoU comes after extensive negotiations between the two countries, and less than a year since their last bilateral meeting. It was acknowledged at the June 2013 meeting that a government-to-government MoU on co-operation in biodiversity, conservation and management fields was required to assist in addressing wildlife crimes, including rhino poaching. "Mozambique is regarded as a priority country for South Africa within the SADC (Southern African Development Community) region and South Africa recognises the need for engaging wit ...

Another African Hunting Story From: Chuck Shook Cat's Dad: After arriving in South Africa I spent five days in Kruger National Park with friends; Raymond Le Clue and wife Vina. Raymond is a South African policeman and they are quite different from the United States police here. Each South African policeman has jurisdiction anywhere in South Africa where the flag is flown. At that time it included South West Africa that is called Namibia today. After a nice rest with my friends, I flew up to Rhodesia where there was a war going on. This was in 1976. Everyone was telling me that I should go see Victoria Falls along the Zambia River. I purchased a ticket when I got to Salisbury, the Rhodesian capital. It was cheaper to buy a ticket in local money rather than purchase it with USA dollars. Anyway, I boarded an old English 2 engine military plane to go to the falls. As we took off the pilot put the plane into a hard left bank and spiraled straight up. I looked around and all of the passengers were military me . ...

10 things to know before visiting South Africa. South Africa -- it's the part of the continent most of us know at least a little about. Now almost two decades removed from apartheid, the country at the bottom of the continent has taken up the place it deserves as one of Africa's top tourist destinations. The country of approximately 52 million people is already well known for Cape Town, Table Mountain, the wine route and game viewing in the Kruger National Park. But there's much more to discover 1. KwaZulu-Natal province inspired one of the world's best-selling albums Paul Simon introduced the world to isicathamiya music, a form of Zulu a cappella, when he teamed up with Ladysmith Black Mambazo for his album "Graceland." Named after the KwaZulu-Natal town they come from, Ladysmith Black Mambazo is but one of hundreds of similar groups that can be seen and heard performing regularly at shows that resemble sporting competitions. Often involving as many as 30 groups, these competitions usually take place in ...

I have started my last week her in Stelles. It’s a very sad feeling knowing I’m going to have to leave this beautiful place that has been my home for the last 5 months. The last trip I did was about a month ago with 3 other ‘crazy chickens’ Monique, Marie and Nadine. We left our precious hometown and flew to Johannesburg (Joburg). At the crack of dawn a bus picked us up at our hotel to drive 6 hours to our lodge in the Kruger National Park. I still remember watching wildlife documentaries on National Geographic with my dad (which annoyed my mum) when I was younger and being amazed by the beauty of the big cats and the wildlife in general. So now many years later, I had a chance to see all of that in real life in a real wild park, a childhood dream come true! When we arrived at the Mohlabetsi lodge after driving along the beautiful Drakensberge mountains, a safari jeep with our guide (Nick) was ready to bring us to our lodge. Already on our way to the lodge we saw a lot of animals like wildebeest . ...

Rhino Wars – the End Game. By David Cook - Environmental Consultant and ex-Deputy Director of the former Natal Parks Board. Opening an emailed wildlife bulletin the other day I discovered that South Africa is currently in a state of war : not just one of those random military adventures to help a troubled state ,such as the CAR debacle, but rather more the defence of our very own sovereign borders against a force engaged in robbing South Africa of one of its most priceless natural assets – and what is even more disturbing – actually losing in the process and rather badly at that! For those who might not be aware the major theatre is the Kruger National Park and the target is the rhino ,or its horn to be more specific. Losses in this flagship park for the past three and a half years total over 1000 rhino , with new records being set each year. Not that Kruger is the only killing field. Here in KZN sporadic strikes by rhino poachers in the various Game Reserves and private ranches has ...
Cape Town - A formal memorandum of understanding aimed at controlling biodiversity crimes like rampant rhino poaching is ready for signing between South Africa and Mozambique. But the signing has been delayed over the past 18 months by Mozambique, although Environmental Affairs Minister Edna Molewa said she did not believe there was any sinister motive. It was partly the result of a new minister being appointed there. Noting that two scheduled meetings had been postponed and that she wished the signing had happened “yesterday”, she said: “It is as urgent as possible.” Molewa was responding to questions at a media briefing on Monday after delivering her budget address in the National Assembly. Many rhino poachers are believed to enter South Africa from Mozambique in the area where the border fence between the Kruger National Park and Mozambique’s Limpopo National Park was removed to allow the development of the multi-national Great Limpopo Transfrontier Park, or peace park. Kruger has borne the b ...

10 Tips for Improving Your Wildlife Photography _ South African Wildlife Photographer Morkel Erasmus shares his advice on improving your Wildlife Photography - Ever since digital SLR technology has become more readily available, more and more people have become photography enthusiasts, and more and more photography enthusiasts have started venturing into a genre previously reserved for only a select few…Wildlife Photography. It seems that this field, in conjunction with Landscape Photography, has really seen a huge growth spurt in these last few years…at least as it pertains to the amount of people practicing them as serious hobbyists or budding professionals. This is especially true in my native country of South Africa, where it’s long been many a family’s tradition to visit legendary self-drive safari locations such as the Kruger National Park. Having neighbouring countries like Namibia, Botswana and Zimbabwe also doesn’t affect this trend negatively! Yet, spend some time on your favourite onl ...
South Africa is one of the most beautiful countries in the world. From Cape Town in the south, a funky and old, vibrant and new, colourful and exciting city, to Kruger National Park in the north. This park is rightly renowned for its unparalleled variety of African wildlife and immense size. The West Coast offers you seafood, great water sp orts, and great outdoorts. During spring the landscape is covered in a rainbow blanket of flowers, a show so dramatic that it can easily be described as one of the natural wonders of the world. Something worth reading – are we playing our role in Addo? I believe we are through our “Visual Presence” programme. Let’s keep focusing on prevention. To Dr David Mabunda ( Chief Executive Officer of SANParks in South Africa) Dear Dr David Mabunda As a very concerned South African citizen I’m reading with utter dismay and a feeling of helpless RAGE about another three rhinos who have been killed in the Kruger National Park since the beginning of this year Why don’t Sanparks de...-horn their rhinos to try and save these precious animals. Time is running out for them FAST and the measures being taken up to date does not seem to put a stop to the relentless killings. Many people who own private Game Reserves do de-horn their rhinos and in doing so are saving their lives. I would rather look at a de-horned rhino in the bush than NO rhino at all. Nothing will stop these ruthless killers and syndicates poaching our rhinos and elephants. The eyes of the whole world are upon us – the Big Five in Af ...

South Africa: Reward for Info Leading to Arrest of Poachers The South African National Parks (SANParks) says it will offer a cash reward of R100 000 to anyone who can provide information that will lead to the arrest of poachers and a further R1 million for a successful conviction of a poaching syndicate mastermind. This was announced by SANParks Chief Executive Officer, David Mabunda. on Wednesday. "We are also happy to announce our partnership with South Africa's Crime Line, a ground-breaking initiative that allows members of the public to make anonymous SMS tip-offs on suspected crimes at any time of the day, courtesy of LeadSA, a Primedia and Independent Newspapers initiative," said Mabunda. He also announced that SANParks had appointed a retired decorated army Major General to oversee the overall anti-poaching operations in the Kruger National Park, as part of its tactics to fight rhino poaching. Hoedspruit (Afrikaans for Hat Creek) is a town situated at the foot of the Klein Drakensberg (Afrikaans for "Small Dragon Mountains" range), in the Limpopo province of South Africa, on the railway line from Tzaneen to Kaapmuiden. [edit] Economy The town, while still small, has grown in recent years. Due to its proximity to private Game Reserves and the Kruger National Park, eco-tourism is a major contributor to the local economy. The Hoedspruit Endangered Species Centre engages in research and breeding of endangered species, notably cheetah, African wild dog and black-footed cat.[2] Hoedspruit Air Force Base is a significant contributor to the local economy. The civil Eastgate Airport, which shares the Air Force base's airfield is, as of February 2012, served by South African Express, several charter operators as well as general aviation
Only 32,000 Lions Remain out of 100,000 Roaming Africa in the 1960s The king of the African savannah is in serious trouble because people are taking over the continent’s last patches of wilderness on unprecedented scale, according to a detailed study released this week. A male lion feeds in South Africa's Kruger National Park. The Kruger Park area is one of only ten strongholds left for lions in Africa. National Geographic photo by James P. Blair. The most comprehensive assessment of lion (Panthera leo) numbers to date determined that Africa’s once-thriving savannahs are undergoing massive land-use conversion and burgeoning human population growth. The decline has had a significant impact on the lions that make their home in these savannahs; their numbers have dropped to as low as 32,000, down from hundreds of thousands estimated just 50 years ago. The study, funded in part by the National Geographic Big Cats Initiative, was published online in this week’s journal Biodiversity and Conservation. Some ...
This is John Varty's response to some emails disapproving of rhino horn trade: Hello friends, Thank you to the above for carefully thought out emails. When the National Parks had the auctions of ivory in the 80s, the Kruger National Park had 7000 elephants. The Sabi Sand Game Reserve, where Londolozi is situated, had 5 elephants. Today the Kruger National Park has 13 000 elephants and Sabi Sand can have as many as 1000 elephants in the dry season. This seems pretty successful to me, especially as elephants are beginning to colonize the Transfrontier park into Mozambique. So kindly tell me where the sale of ivory at auctions has fuelled the poaching of elephants in South Africa? The above example suggests the opposite. In the 60's, the Sabi Sand owners introduced White rhino, purchased from Natal Parks. For 50 years we have protected, conserved, bred and paid for our rhino, which is now a sizeable population. Over the years, rhino have died of old age, being killed in fights and died from disease. The horn ...

A Land Of Many Faces - The Republic of South Africa is a land plentiful with all that an exploring traveler can hope and dream of within a vacation. For those who are looking for the bustle of the busy urban life, it offers the cities of both Cape Town and Johannesburg. On the other hand, for those individuals who prefer to hide away from the commotion and flurry, the Karoo plateau offers rocky hills and mountains in which to hide. Yet, those who were expecting to see a vast, expansive desert, they will not be disappointed once they come across the Kalahari Desert.
