Remembering Doris Troy who was born on this day in 1937. Doris Troy (born Doris Elaine Higginsen; January 6, 1937 – February 16, 2004) was an American R&B singer and songwriter, known to her many fans as "Mama Soul". She was born as Doris Elaine Higginsen, in The Bronx, the daughter of a Barbadian Pentecostal minister. She later took her grandmother's name and grew up as Doris Payne. Her parents disapproved of "subversive" forms of music like rhythm & blues, so she cut her teeth singing in her father's choir. She was working as an usherette at the Apollo where she was discovered by James Brown. Troy worked with Solomon Burke, The Drifters, Cissy Houston, and Dionne Warwick, before she co-wrote and recorded "Just One Look", which hit in the US Billboard Hot 100 in 1963. The song has been covered by The Hollies, Major Lance, Linda Ronstadt, Bryan Ferry, Anne Murray, Klaus Nomi, and Harry Nilsson. Her only foray into the UK Singles Chart, "Whatcha Gonna Do About It", peaked at in December 1964. As her solo ...

Sunday May 11th Mother's Day has come and gone but the echoes of a delicious night linger on for us and our dear friends. The audience was full of folks with their moms there for dinner, dancing and the good music we strive to provide. It was a rock and roll party and concert all in one with a slant toward showing appreciation for the moms who have given us all so much. Gar opened the night with Merle Haggard's "Mama Tried" and from there it was all pedal-to-the-metal, heading uphill to the top of the mountain and a no brakes run down into the Valley of Paradise for as long as we and our friends could keep it on the rails. My Black History Moment. My Dad's bio is published. Eddie Williams Based out of New York City, trumpeter Eddie Williams turned in many a soulful performance on nearly two dozen albums of mainstream jazz recorded between the mid-'50s and early '80s. Although not as well known as certain brassmen in soul-jazz and hard bop such as Donald Byrd and Lee Morgan, Williams nonetheless is a presence on certain classic sides in these styles. High points of the Williams recording legacy include a pair of alto saxophonist Lou Donaldson's finest achievements, the appetizing Hot Dog and the humble Everything I Play Is Funky, both released in the decidedly funky year of 1969. More recently, Williams took part in the early-'90s comeback album of soul singer Solomon Burke and also figures prominently in a series of funky compilations, the Blue Break Beats series. The trumpeter also played in Broadway pit bands. ~ Eugene Chadbourne, Rovi Read more:

Just One Look by Doris Troy. Doris Troy's impact on Soul and Pop Music far outweighs her chart entries. Her big, rich, vibrant voice graced recordings by artists as diverse as The Rolling Stones, The Beatles, Solomon Burke, Dusty Springfield, Pink Floyd, Billy Preston, and Maxine Brown, having an impact on singers, particularly in Europe, that can still be heard today. She was a rareity in the early sixties - a singer who wrote her own material (JUST ONE LOOK, WHATCHA GONNA DO ABOUT IT, HOW ABOUT THAT. She was always at the cutting edge. One of the earliest Soul divas, on Atlantic before Aretha, and recording with Kenny Gamble & Leon Huff (I'LL DO ANYTHING) years before the heady days of the Philadelphia sound. Doris was born Doris Higginsen in New York. Her father was a minister, and she went on to sing in gospel groups, having sung in church since a child. In the fifties she joined The Halos, a jazz tinged vocal group, and started writing her own material, scoring her first hit in 1960 - HOW ABOUT THAT ...

Esteemed music journalist Peter Guralnick calls Dan Penn the secret hero of his book Sweet Soul Music, which chronicles 1960s era R&B. Penn, a Nashville resident wrote classics such as “Dark End of the Street,” “I’m Your Puppet,” “Do Right Woman, Do Right Man,” “Cry Like a Baby,” “Sweet Inspiration,” “It Tears Me Up,” “Out of Left Field” and many more. His songs have been recorded by everyone from country acts the Flying Burrito Brothers, Jerry Lee Lewis, Ronnie Milsap, Lee Roy Parnell, Charlie Rich and Hank Williams Jr. to R&B artists Arthur Alexander, Solomon Burke, Aretha Franklin and Otis Redding. Born Wallace Daniel Pennington in 1941, Penn was raised on a small farm in Vernon, Alabama. Penn had excellent ears, and he spent countless nights huddled under his covers listening to the faint sounds of WLAC-Nashville on his transistor radio. He instantly took to R&B artists like Bobby “Blue” Bland, Ray Charles and James Brown, who were all featured on radio personality Jo ...

Posted by my good friend Lou Lanza. time to get my vinyls out again! As an engineer I've agreed on these things for years. iTunes and the Death of Liner Notes Got an e-mail the other day from my old friend, Steve Jordan -- one of the greatest drummers on Earth... he's played with everyone from Keith Richards to Sonny Rollins and produced a slew of artists like John Mayer, Solomon Burke and Buddy Guy. Steve asked, "How can NARAS [the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences] nominate an album for best engineered recording and fail to nominate the mastering engineer?" It's a great question: Denying the Grammy to the mastering engineer is the musical equivalent of awarding a Super Bowl ring solely to the victorious quarterback while ignoring the contributions of his receivers and offensive linemen. In the football analogy, it's more difficult to overlook the other players because we see them on tv, hear the announcers mention their names and read about them on the sports page. How many of you readers ...

On this last Sunday in Black History; I would like to place a spotlight in Emily "Cissy" Houston; the mother of the late great Whitney Houston. Cissy is an American soul, gospel singer. She led a successful career as a backup singer for such artists as Elvis Presley and Aretha Franklin, and is now primarily a solo artist, and has won a Grammy Award for her work. She is mother of the late singer and actress Whitney Houston, aunt of Dionne and Dee Dee Warwick and a cousin of Leontyne Price. The youngest of the eight children born to factory worker Nitch and homemaker Delia Drinkard, Cissy Houston started singing as a child. As a five-year-old, she began singing with siblings Anne, Nicky, and Larry in the family gospel act the Drinkard Singers in her hometown of Newark, New Jersey. Houston and nieces Dee Dee and Dionne Warwick who were also Drinkard Singers for a time later sang backing vocals for the likes of Wilson Pickett and Solomon Burke, among others. Started singing with the family gospel group the Dr ...
People who know me know that there's nothing thet I like more than the soulful sounds of Ray Charles, Eddie Hinton, Otis Redding, Solomon Burke, Wilson Pickett, Dan Penn, Donnie Fritts, Aretha Franklin, Candi Staton, Mavis Staples and the like. But never before I've been more excited about the young artists who continue and build on the tradition of southern soul music...artists like St. Paul and The Broken Bones of Birmingham AL, Mingo Fishtrap of Austin TX, Alabama Shakes of Athens AL, Jesse Dee of Boston MA, JJ Grey & Mofro of Jacksonville FL, Vintage Trouble of Los Angeles CA, Eric Lindell of New Orleans LA, Eli Paperboy Reed of Boston MA, Mike Andersen of Aarhus, Denmark and Sam Lewis of Nashville TN. Check 'em out! :-)
Well, I'm on a binge of checking out all the Jay Bellerose I can find. Results: don't waste your time with the Sam Phillips, Solomon Burke or Krauss/Plant records. The Ray Lamontagne, Allen Toussaint and (amazingly) The Union (Elton John/Leon Russell) are winners. But more astoundingly Elton John is apparently doing a trio record with Bellerose and Raphael Saadiq on bass. I don't even know what to make of this, but I'm a little excited ...

Moving in the direction of getting rid of much/most of my stuff... for a start: 1) A pair of Bose bookshelf speakers. Approximately 16" wide, 11" tall each, sound really good, I'm the original and only owner. $50 for the pair. 2) 4-CD Box Set - Atlantic Soul 1959-1975. Still in original shrink wrap (never opened). 82 songs total documenting the history of soul on Atlantic Records; Ben E. King, Solomon Burke, Wilson Pickett, Don Covay, Aretha Franklin, that sort of thing. $50 3) Another 4-CD Box Set - Atlantic Blues 1949-1970. Also still in original shrink wrap, 80 songs total with some very historic blues recordings, ala Professor Longhair, LeadBelly, Ray Charles, Joe Turner and on and on. Also $50 4) I'm guessing I'll have to break this into lots, but figgered I'd mention it just in case. I have about a thousand music CDs to be sold. About half of them are mainstream rock titles with a lot of classic rock to about early 2000s stuff. The rest dance around between jazz (some obscure), Southern gospel, even ...

Hill draws on vintage female rhythm and blues influences such as LaVern Baker, Etta James and Ruth Brown, as well as some of her favorite male singers Otis Redding and Solomon Burke, without being stuck or pigeonholed strictly as a ‘retro’ artist. Her tough vocal style fits with contemporary sensibilities yet evokes all the great female blues shouters of previous decades.
