A Tip For More Beautiful Nails : Don't cut or manipulate cuticles. Whether you have your nails professionally groomed or do them yourself, the No. 1 recommendation is leave your cuticles alone, says Dana Stern, MD, a dermatologist at Mount Sinai Medical Center in New York City. "The cuticle is the natural barrier to fungus and bacteria -- and once you breach that, protection is lost," she says. This will not only make cuticles look worse -- red, swollen, and ragged -- but may also land you a nasty infection that harms the nail bed and leads to permanent nail damage. And while cutting cuticles holds the most potential for harm, pushing them back can cause problems as well. ~Angi

L.A. Barbers To Use $8.5 Million Grant To Screen Black Men For Hypertension Los Angeles - The head of Cedars-Sinai’s hypertension center will use a $8.5 million grant to help train black barbers to check men for high blood pressure, Cedars-Sinai Medical Center announced today. “Uncontrolled hypertension is one of the biggest health problems facing the African-American community today,” said Dr. Ronald G. Victor, who published a study in 2011 showing that barber shop-based outreach could help save hundreds of lives. Undetected hypertension can surface in the form of heart and kidney damage and lead to strokes and heart attacks. Victor will use part of grant from National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute, to start a new study involving about 20 Los Angeles area barber shops, with the aim of possibly expanding the project, a statement said. ~ City News Service
*** WISDOM for Daily Living... from White Crane Exploring *** Wisdom & Culture this with your friends... \ \ | / / | \ \ | / / THIS WEEKEND IN *** HISTORY JUNE 20 1909 – ERROL FLYNN , Australian actor (d. 1959); What a surprise to most people when the news broke that this greatest of Hollywood womanizers also slept with men. Flynn, of course, had made his reputation on his body and on his magnificent Black Irish good looks, so it made no difference whatever that he couldn’t act his way out of a paper bag. When he smiled that dazzlingly wicked smile of his at the camera, he melted panties and B.V.D.s in darkened theaters all over the world. The actor’s trial for rape during WWII only increased his popularity, thanks to the candid details printed in the daily newspapers, even though by modern standards one would be hard-pressed to know whether the two girls in question had actually been raped or whether Flynn had been engaged in building a secret munitions depot for the Allies. (“And then what did M ...

Torah to Go - Parashat Korah Last summer, I was a chaplain at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center. I spent my summer visiting with patients and helping them through difficult times through prayer, good listening, and finding ways to help them feel more at home. I remember one patient in particular, with whom I spent a great deal of time with during his stay at Cedars Sinai. He was very sick, and while I was with him, received a diagnosis from his doctor that meant he was going to die. The patient chose to go home on hospice, and die with dignity and with his family. He told me later that he treasured our time together because I was the only one willing to acknowledge reality and listen to what he was feeling. When I would sit and talk with him, I felt like I was standing between life and death, trying to hold on to this man's life, while recognizing that he was going to die in the near future. In this week's Torah portion, Korah, we find Aaron, the high priest, in a similar situation. In the aftermath of Korah's ...

Anthem's Obamacare rates to increase less than 10% in California Los Angeles Times by Chad Terhune - June 12, 2014: In the strongest indication yet where Obamacare rates are headed, industry giant Anthem Blue Cross said its California premiums for individual coverage will increase less than 10% on average next year. Health insurance rates in California during the initial rollout of the Affordable Care Act were better than expected, helping boost enrollment to 1.4 million people in the Covered California exchange. But Anthem and some other insurers across the country had previously predicted double-digit rate hikes in 2015 that could hamper future enrollment and renewals when sign-ups start again in November. In a speech Thursday at Town Hall Los Angeles, however, Anthem Blue Cross President Mark Morgan said Californians would fare better than that. He said the age and projected medical costs of new enrollees are in line with the company's expectations thus far. "We will not have double-digit increases in ...
Weather Trigger a Migraine? Annie Hauser Published: When lightning strikes, a migraine might not be far behind, according to a paper published in the journal of the International Headache Society earlier this year. In the study, there was a 31 percent increase in headache incidence whenever lightning struck land within 25 miles of the homes of the headache patients studied. Plus, incidences of new-onset headaches increased by a quarter during lightning strikes. The migraine-headache connection is so strong – and changes in barometric pressure so keenly felt – some patients say they’re like their own meteorologist, said Dr. Joshua Cohen, MD, MPH, an attending neurologist at St. Luke’s-Roosevelt Hospital Center. “We know that in times of weather changes, people with migraines are greatly susceptible to them,” Dr. Cohen explained. “We believe the reason for that is due to changes in barometric pressure.” Barometric pressure is another way of saying air pressure -- the weight of the air pressin ...

Update on Dave Heller: Hi everyone, Spoke to Dave this morning. First of all, there is no signs of cancer. He was informed previous by a physician who misinterpreted prior tests that were inconclusive. Dave has been in Cedars-Sinai Medical Center for the past number of days undergoing many tests. Yesterday he endured an Endoscopy. This is where a tube is put down his throat into the stomach. The doctors didn't find anything at all. Dave has also had a number of MRI's that to date have not shown the doctors the cause of the pain and the exact area that is troubling him. It is believed to be between the Gall Bladder and Pancreas. The physicians are running many tests on Dave to try and determine what the source and location of this ailments are. His phone number at the hospital is: ((310) 423-5906. 20th century From 1900 to 1926 there was no distinct Jewish neighborhood.[3] 2500 Jews lived "downtown" which in 1910 was described as Temple Street (the main Jewish Street) and the area to its south. In 1920, this was described to include Central Avenue. Smaller groups lived in the University, Westlake, and wholesale areas. Except for University, these areas steadily declined between 1900 and 1926. In 1900 two Jewish community historians stated that "there were far too few Jews to form a definitively Jewish district."[5] In 1900 there were 2,500 Jews. This increased to 5,795 Jews in 1910, 10,000 in 1917, 43,000 in 1923, and 65,000 in the mid-1920s.[6] In 1902 the Kaspare Cohn Hospital (1902-1910), which later became Cedars of Lebanon Hospital (Melrose/Vermont), and eventually Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, was established in Angelino Heights. From 1902-1905 it treated tuberculosis sufferers from Eastern sweatshops, until rich neighbors forced them to stop treating TB patients. [3] In 1906 the Sinai Temple ...

Ernest Borgnine, left, as the title character in "Marty," with Betsy Blair. More Photos » By ANITA GATES Published: July 8, 2012 Ernest Borgnine, the rough-hewn actor who seemed destined for tough-guy characters but won an Academy Award for embodying the gentlest of souls, a lonely Bronx butcher, in the 1955 film “Marty,“ died on Sunday in Los Angeles. He was 95. His death, at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, was announced by Harry Flynn, his longtime spokesman. Mr. Borgnine, who later starred on “McHale’s Navy” on television, made his first memorable impression in films at age 37, appearing in “From Here to Eternity” (1953) as Fatso Judson, the sadistic stockade sergeant who beats Frank Sinatra’s character, Private Maggio, to death. But Paddy Chayefsky, who wrote “Marty” as a television play, and Delbert Mann, who directed it (it starred Rod Steiger), saw something beyond brutality in Mr. Borgnine and offered him the title role when it was made into a feature film. The 1950s had emerged ...

6 Things that Lead to Dangerously High Blood Pressure High blood pressure, also known as hypertension, is no joke. When blood pressure, the force of blood against artery walls, goes up, the heart has to work overtime to pump blood throughout the body. This can lead to dangerous health complications. While some blood pressure risk factors are unavoidable, such as genetics, there are habits that many people have that may significantly raise their risk of hypertension. One of the main concerns with having high blood pressure is that it paves the way for atherosclerosis, the hardening of the arteries. This, in turn, can lead to stroke, heart attack or other cardiac incidents. According to Dr. Prediman K. Shah, the director of cardiology at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, “high blood pressure gives you a twofold to fourfold increase in your risk of stroke or heart attack.” The Mayo Clinic states that besides heart attack and stroke, high blood pressure can lead to other issues, including insomnia, sexual dysf ...

Secretos De Los Dermatólogos What she wants to tell you: You could be spending too much time at the nail salon. "Patients often come into the office complaining of an itchy red rash on their eyelids," says Melanie Grossman, MD, a dermatologist based in Manhattan. "And they assume it's from their makeup or cleanser." This condition, called eyelid dermatitis, is also caused by irritants in the air—the most likely culprit being the chemicals from nail polish, polish remover and other products wafting around in the nail salon, Grossman says. How to help her—and you: If it becomes a recurring problem, consider limiting manicures to once every two weeks (and maybe find a salon with better ventilation). What she wants to tell you: Off-label uses of (certain) drugs are fine. Patients don't realize that many common prescription drugs can do double duty. "Antihistamines work for some people with rosacea," says Debra Jaliman, MD, a Manhattan-based dermatologist and the author of Skin Rules. "I've also used Aczo ...

WASHINGTON, DC — The current clinical evidence is insufficient to *** the benefits and risks of taking multivitamins or single or paired nutrient supplements for the prevention of cardiovascular disease or cancer, according to a new statement by the United States Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF). The evidence against the use of beta-carotene or vitamin E is stronger, however, and the agency said these supplements should not be used for preventing cardiovascular events or cancer. "A critical gap in the evidence is the lack of studies of multivitamin combinations in groups generalizable to the US population," the USPSTF concludes. "Targeting research toward individuals who can be identified as high risk for nutrient deficiency rather than the general population may be more productive." Published February 24, 2014 in the Annals of Internal Medicine and chaired by Dr Virginia Moyer (Baylor College of Medicine, Houston, TX), the vitamin review included four randomized, controlled trials and one coh .. ...
Kenya West. I now understand him now. The following tidbit of information clearly shows that Kenya is a spiritual man who is self-conscious about his jaw. Leave him alone and stop "hating." On October 23, 2002, West was in a California recording studio producing music for Beanie Sigel, Peedi Crakk, and The Black Eyed Peas. After leaving the studio at around 3 a.m. in his rented Lexus, he had a near-fatal accident when he was cut off by a car, ran head-on into traffic, and collided with another car near the W Hotel. He was taken to the Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, mentioned in the song as "the same hospital where Biggie Smalls died," and had his jaw wired to his face in reconstructive surgery. Two weeks after being admitted to hospital, he recorded the song at the Record Plant Studios with his jaw still wired shut. The song's title refers to the wires used to hold his broken jaw together. When asked about how the incident changed his music, West stated: Well, the only thing this accident's is saying i ...

Weighs Fertility Procedure By SABRINA TAVERNISE FEB. 25, 2014 But a researcher in Oregon, Shoukhrat Mitalipov , has performed the mitochondrial procedure in monkeys successfully and has said it is ready to try in people. Such genetic methods have been controversial in the United States, where critics and some elected officials ask how far scientists plan to go in their efforts to engineer humans, and question whether such methods might create other problems later on. “Every time we get a little closer to genetic tinkering to promote health — that’s exciting and scary,” said Dr. Alan Copperman, director of the division of reproductive endocrinology and infertility at Mount Sinai Medical Center in New York. “People are afraid it will turn into a dystopian brave new world.” He added that the current meeting and discussion was an attempt at “putting together a framework for us to prepare for this genetic revolu ...
Don Knotts, US Army Knotts enlisted in the United States Army after graduating from Morgantown High School and spent most of his service entertaining troops. Knotts earned a bachelor’s degree in 1948 from West Virginia University after returning from service in World War II. Knotts is best known for his portrayal of Barney Fife on the 1960s television sitcom The Andy Griffith Show, a role which earned him five Emmy Awards. He also played landlord Ralph Furley on the 1970s and 1980s television sitcom Three's Company. In 1996, TV Guide ranked him # 27 on its 50 Greatest TV Stars of All Time list. Knotts went on to star in a series of film comedies which drew on his high-strung persona from the TV series: he had a cameo appearance in It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World (1963), and starred in The Incredible Mr. Limpet (1964), The Ghost and Mr. Chicken (1966), The Reluctant Astronaut (1967), The Shakiest Gun in the West (1968), The Love God? (1969) and How to Frame a Figg (1971). Beginning in 1975, Knotts w ...
Back in 1983, the iconic local poet Wanda Coleman anticipated her own death, which she envisioned as "a door thru which i escape/another world." Far from being in fear of this inevitability, the Watts native and lifelong Angeleno embraced it. "When my time comes/i will speak to the night," she declared. And, like her throngs of ardent fans and poetic peers, you had to presume even the night would stop to pay attention, reveling in her every word and late-night confession: "My skin peels off, beneath it soft moist black earth." Coleman passed away at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center after a lengthy illness on Friday, November 22, at the age of 67, leaving behind her longtime husband and fellow poet, Austin Straus, two children, three grandchildren, and a body of work that richly and palpably grappled with the contradictions of life in this city. When the former Wanda Evans emerged as a startlingly frank and fearlessly confrontational poet in the late 1970s, the East Coast literary establishment had little use f ...
Johnnie Ray, 63, 50's Singer Who Hit No. 1 With a Sob in His Voice       Johnnie Ray, a singer whose emotionally uninhibited hit recordings in the early 1950's anticipated the rock-and-roll era, died of liver failure on Saturday in Los Angeles. He was 63 years old.   Mr. Ray, who had entered Cedars-Sinai Medical Center on Feb. 16 and had been in a coma for several days, died at 4 P.M., said a hospital spokesman, Ron Wise.   Mr. Ray, whose performing style earned him the nickname ''Mr. Emotion,'' created a sensation late in 1951 with a two-sided-hit that reached No. 1 on the pop charts. The record, ''Cry'' backed by ''The Little White Cloud That Cried,'' sold more than two million copies.   Overnight, Mr. Ray became a teen-age idol whose popularity at its peak was comparable to the hysteria generated by Frank Sinatra and Elvis Presley, though in Mr. Ray's case, the glory was fleeting.   Rhythms and Emotions     Mr. Ray's singing style, which was iconoclastic in an era dominated by polite crooners, ...

Home Remedies Even Doctors Love By Henrylito Dr. Tacio AFTER celebrating my birthday recently, I came down with a whopping cough caused by the common cold. Like any other self-respecting health journalist, the first thing I did was asked my mother. She recommended several things, but what struck me most was when she suggested making some chicken soup. "Don't take chicken soup for a cold," a friend's wife told me while I was buying ingredients. "It's just an old wives' tale." Not so, according to The Doctors Book of Home Remedies. "Along-time folk remedy is now a proven fact," the book declares. "A cut of hot chicken soup can help unclog your nasal passages." Researchers at Mount Sinai Medical Center in Miami Beach found that hot chicken soup, either because of its aroma or its taste, "appears to possess an additional substance for increasing the flow of nasal mucus." These secretions - what comes out when you blow your nose or sneeze - serve a first line of defense in removing germs from your system, the ...
How massage can benefit your heart By Alex A. Kecskes Regardless of age, massage therapy performed by a skilled and qualified therapist can reduce stress, cause relaxation and enhance feelings of well being. A good massage can stimulate the nerve endings in skin, release endorphins (the feel good hormones) and inhibit the stress hormones cortisol and adrenaline. Blood will circulate more efficiently, blood pressure will drop and heart rates will slow down. A regular massage regimen can reduce the risks associated with stress, such as cardiac arrhythmias (the heart pumps less effectively, so less blood reaches the brain and other vital organs). A number of long-term studies have shown that a consistent massage program can decrease diastolic and systolic blood pressure. And maintaining a healthy blood pressure can contribute to lowering the odds of one having a heart attack. Massage therapy releases contracted muscles and pushes venous blood towards the heart, easing the strain on the heart. In this way, ma ...

Most Germs At School: Cafeteria Table, Computer Mouse Share Follow By DeepDiveAdmin, Fri, October 22, 2010 In the cafeteria, the biggest threat may not be the kid that wants to eat your French fries or what is truly inside a hotdog. A recent study conducted by Dr. Charles Gerba and the University of Arizona in a K-12 school system found that the germiest place at school is the cafeteria table. Researchers from the University of Arizona swabbed classrooms and common area surfaces at six schools in a K-12 school system to determine the relative numbers of total heterotrophic bacteria and coliform bacteria on frequently touched hard, non-porous surfaces. In addition to the cafeteria table, the most contaminated sites include: the computer mouse, which harbored nearly twice as many bacteria than desktops the bathroom paper towel handle water fountain bathroom sink faucets library table and Computer keyboard Of the top eight most contaminated surfaces out of twelve sampled in the schools, six were in common ar ...

Shea Butter Body Lotion is coming!!! Shea butter, which is extracted from the nut of the African shea tree, is a rich, cream-colored substance that has natural soothing and moisturizing properties. "The moisturizers present in shea butter are some of the same moisturizers that the sebaceous glands produce," says Jody Levine, M.D., clinical instructor of dermatology at Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York City. Shea butter is full of nutrients, including vitamin A, which has many healing properties and has been known to aid in treating blemishes, wrinkles, eczema and dermatitis, as well as burns and even stretch marks. Shea butter is also packed with antioxidants like vitamin E , as well as polyphenols and phytonutrients. These ingredients make shea butter an anti-inflammatory, which is why it works so well at moisturizing and soothing all types of skin (and can be found in skin and hair products galore). And while pure shea butter is great for hydrating most of your skin (it's commonly used in body ...

New York, NY (PRWEB) October 01, 2013 Early treatment of heart attack patients with an inexpensive beta-blocker drug called metoprolol, while in transit to the hospital, can significantly reduce damage to the heart during a myocardial infarction, according to clinical trial study results published Oct. 1 in the journal Circulation. The study was a collaboration between Centro Nacional de Investigaciones Cardiovasculares Carlos III (CNIC) in Spain and Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai in New York. The study, involving emergency ambulances and seven hospitals across Spain, shows this simple, low-cost intervention strategy with metoprolol could be easily extended throughout the world, to provide significant clinical benefit and could change current treatment p ...

Lack of sleep also affects skin conditions because it increases stress, which boosts the release of cortisol. Sunday while visiting my son in the pediatrics ward at Cedars Sinai Medical Center and delivering our first large donation I was able to meet one of our recipients and her parents. While my husband and I were on the elevator we began chatting with a man going to the same floor. He and his wife had recently transferred their daughter to Cedars and were in that "newbie" phase of learning the lay out. I had a huge bag of puppets, chemo caps, blankets, etc and asked him if he would like to pick something out for his daughter. He excitedly asked me to follow him to her room so I could meet her and her mom. I was apprehensive to say the least, I know the feeling of being the parent of a VERY sick child, so I felt a little fearful and intrusive. I followed him dragging my bag along LOL and am so thankful I did. His lovely 5 yr old daughter is awaiting a kidney transplant. Her mom took bag by bag of items out and urged her daughter to pick something. She finally decided on the one puppet I had almost scr ...

We are raising funds to offset the airfare and travel expenses for his wife, Jerriann and his two sons, Michael and Mitchell! Cedar's Chooses Network by Metal Tier Affordable Care Act – Q&A: Question: It is my understanding that individual carrier networks should mirror on and off the exchange as per previous posts. How do you then explain Cedar-Sanai hospital who is doing just that with their contract through Health Net and are specifying down to plan level what they are accepting. Answer: My read on the Cedars' statement below is that the Health Net network is broader and more inclusive at the Bronze and Catastrophic plan level than are other levels. This is not an on exchange / off-exchange issue. From Cedars Sinai website; "If you choose to purchase your health insurance through the exchange and want the option of receiving full coverage for care provided by Cedars-Sinai Medical Center and its physicians, there are three Covered California plans that will work for you: 1. Health Net Bronze PPO Plan (available to all) 2. Health Net Catastrophic PPO Plan (available to people under the age of 30) 3. Health Net Tribal PPO Plan ...
Avery Schreiber, 66; Jack Burns' Comedy Partner       Avery Schreiber, the portly, mustachioed comedian who struck gold when he teamed with Jack Burns in the 1960s and was a master of both broad and perceptive comedy, has died. He was 66.   Schreiber, who had been in declining health, died Monday of a heart attack at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles.   The comedy team of Burns and Schreiber was best known for its taxicab routine, with Burns as the talkative passenger, a conventioneer who punctuates his marathon sentences with a rapid-fire "Huh? huh? huh?" Schreiber played the long-suffering cabby.     "Avery was my dearest friend and comedy partner for 40 years," Burns told The Times on Tuesday. "He was an extraordinary talent. More than that, he was probably the most gentle, kind and compassionate person I have known."   With his curly black hair, bushy mustache and squinty eyes, the teddy bear-like Schreiber had a face and body made for comedy--as amply displayed in his memorable serie ...
LOSING DOCTORS. Contrary to the promise made by President Obama and other liberals that if you like your doctor, you can keep your doctor, Americans are finding they are unable to do so under Obamacare:just 60 percent of the doctors and 75 of the hospitals that participate in the Blue Shield of California’s group plans will be included in individual plans purchased through Covered California, the state’s new insurance exchange. And among the providers who declined to accept the lower rates were some of the state’s most prestigious — and expensive — hospitals, including Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles and hospitals affiliated with the University of California.

My 87 year old step mother, Miriam Zatinsky, fell yesterday and broke her left arm. She went to the hospital and was awaiting surgery and then took a turn for the worse this morning, She became unresponsive. She is currently in the ICU at Mt. SInai Medical Center on Miami Beach. She didn't have a stroke but they are trying to see if they can get her to respond to commands again. All good thoughts and prayers welcome. On a practical note, I may be flying to Miami tomorrow and my suitcase is broken. If anyone has a large suitcase they can lend me it would be very much appreciated. Thanks so much, Shana
What is brain hemorrhage? Brain hemorrhage happens when an artery in the brain bursts. This discharge of blood can disrupt the normal circulation to the brain, so it can lead to a stroke, which occurs when part of the brain is deprived of oxygen. Strokes can cause temporary or permanent brain damage. Bleeding within the brain can also raise the pressure inside the skull to dangerous levels. This high pressure in turn can cause the hemorrhage to bleed faster, leading to a vicious cycle of damage within the brain. Subarachnoid hemorrhaging, which recently landed reality-show star Bret Michaels in intensive care, refers to hemorrhages that occur in the tiny space between the brain and the thin tissue that covers the brain. This type of hemmorrhage is rare -- subarachnoid hemorrhaging accounts for just 3 percent of all strokes. Symptoms of a brain hemorrhage include a sudden, severe headache (referred to by doctors as a thunderclap headache), dizziness, slurred speech, vision problems, vomiting, seizures and ...

Hawking Gives Humans 1,000 Years to Escape Earth VOA News April 11, 2013 Famed astrophysicist Stephen Hawking warns that humans will need to go beyond the planet Earth if they are to survive as a species. “We must continue to go into space for humanity,” Hawking told a gathering this week in Los Angeles, California. “We won’t survive another 1,000 years without escaping our fragile planet.” Hawking, 71, has long been a proponent of space exploration. Speaking at a 2008 ceremony marking the 50th anniversary of the U.S. space agency, NASA, Hawking called for a new era in human space exploration, comparable, he said, to the European voyages to the New World more than 500 years ago. “Spreading out into space will have an even greater effect," Hawking said. "It will completely change the future of the human race and maybe determine whether we have any future at all.” Hawking was in Los Angeles this week for an appearance at the Cedars-Sinai Medical Center to see its research on slowing the progre ...

Reality television star Kim Kardashian and rapper Kanye West have named their baby daughter North West, according to a copy of the birth certificate released by the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health on Friday. Kardashian, the 32-year-old star of the TV show "Keeping Up With the Kardashians," gave birth in Los Angeles on Saturday morning, weeks before her expected due date in July. West was with her for the delivery at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center. People magazine said the couple had been considering directional names. Representatives for Kardashian and West could not immediately be reached for comment. Kardashian, who also has a clothing line and endorsement deals, started dating the Grammy-winning rap star in April 2012. She married her second husband, NBA basketball player Kris Humphries of the Brooklyn Nets, in an elaborate ceremony filmed for the reality TV show in August 2011. But the union lasted only 72 days.
