I just finished an amazing book, & want to share: "Short nights of the shadow catcher," by Timothy Egan. It's a biography of Edward Curtis, who as a self-made person in every sense took on the huge task of photographing, recording, and studying all the native american "families," resulting in 20 intensive books. He died broke, like so many astounding creatives people. What a life he led -- it leaves me stunned all these years later.

Began reading the auto-biography of 19th century Methodist Circuit Riding Minister Peter Cartwright right after I completed the previous work on Francis Asbury. It's interesting to see the transition from 18th to 19th century America through the eyes of these men. It's a truly hard life that these men chose to live. Their hardships endured on horseback over thousands of miles over decades on their own is so similar to what the Longhunter or Mountain Man faced. I understand that these men had the luxury of working among people; however, we're talking many miles of no existing road travels over all sorts of terrain just to find a cramped log home. Just curious: What are you reading this week?

Written on someone else's wall, in response to a remark about Jodie Foster's continued loyalty to Mel Gibson, but true in general: "You will at some point in your life have one friend who does something the rest of the world considers shameful. He may be misunderstood, or it may be something you also consider shameful. But whether you agree with the world or not, your own character can be measured by whether you join the lynch mob. Friendship is not just for when it meets the approval of the group." (This is something I have had to put into practice, more than once.)

I keep looking for any hint that Che Guevara was using his dislike for the US, democracy, and capitalism as a propaganda tool instead of his actual belief. Personally I see his abandonment of religion at an early age as losing a fundamental motivational factor towards ethics. Basically all people need a struggle to bring meaning to their lives. It is our natural need for competition and association. He seemed to lose his focus in his late teens and set out to find this struggle when he tossed away religion. Guatemala seemed to prove the hypothesis for me when he watched the country get overthrown without any particular stance. He also seemed to not take sides in political arguments in school. It was only when he fashioned a straw man out of the US, and particularly the CIA, that he seemed to find himself. For that reason I thought he would be particularly susceptible to manipulation and that gave me the impression that Castro may have self-actualized enough to influence Che. What's the best way to create and know a character? For me it's knowing myself. If I am honest with myself, I can make the lesser aspects and better aspects of myself parts of the character. I can borrow from others I've met in real life, knowing that what interests me about them is some aspect of myself, the human aspects we all share. Once you can be honest with yourself, you can start to create from your own strengths, fears, concerns, and then you can start to expand. A sort of, what if instead of having life as I have it, that this one thing was changed. How would I react. And suppose this aspect of my genetics or enviroment were radically different, what kind of character would I be, and therefore what kind of person is the character I'm creating?

As I was reading the last few pages of West of Rome by John Fante this evening, Peggy had the soundtrack CD from the movie "Shine" playing. "Shine" is one of my favorite movies, based on the Australian pianist (was a child [prodigy), David Helfgott. Helfgott mastered Rachmaninoff's Piano Concerto No. 3 (Rach 3, for short) before having a nervous breakdown later in life. Anyway, hearing the CD in the background prompted me (seguewayed) to read his biography, Love You To Bits And Pieces, which was written by his wife, Gillian Helfgott. I'm glad I had the book waiting for me on my shelf. I love how music will move me to read and vise-versa. Seeing Rach 3 performed in person is on my bucket list. A Short Biography of Birendra Krishna Bhadra Birendra Krishna was born to Roy Bahadur Kalikrishna & Sarala Bala Devi on 4th August, 1905 at a rented house in Ahiritola his maternal home, in north Kolkata. Later they shifted to 7, Ramdhan Mitra Lane, the house bought by his grandmother Yogo Maya Devi. A very enterprising lady,Yogo Maya Devi became a widow with five minor children in early life. She was self-educated and was proficient in English & Sanskrit. She took employment as a private tutor of the Maharani of Nava state of Punjab. Besides free living quarters she was payed Rs. 250/- per month. She took along with her all her five children. It was an act of great bravery for a woman of that period. Birendra Krishna in his memoirs writes-"It was from my grandmother that I first heard Shakespeare in a loud and clear pronunciation. My first lessons in Sanskrit was also from her."
