(To my fellow Pennsylvanians - that is a nationwide average - PA pays over $35k per year per prisoner). I cannot determine if the cost of public defenders is factored in here - seems not to be. Now. if we made prison more "prison like" (I'm talking about prison - after a defendent is found guilty - not holding facilities while awaiting trial if they just cannot afford bail) maybe we would accomplish two things. 1) Discourage youth from joining the inmate gangs 2) free up some money to educate and train people so that they can get decent jobs and not see prison as a place for free room and board.
