Those fabulous Jewish Comedians. You may remember the old Jewish Catskill comics of vaudeville days: Shecky Greene, Red Buttons, Totie Fields, Joey Bishop, Milton Berle, Jan Murray, Danny Kaye, Henny Youngman, Buddy Hackett, Sid Caesar, Groucho Marx, Jackie Mason, Victor Borge, Woody Allen, Joan Rivers, Lenny Bruce, George Burns, Allan Sherman, Jerry Lewis, Peter Sellers, Carl Reiner, Shelley Berman, Gene Wilder, George Jessel, Alan King, Mel Brooks, Phil Silvers, Jack Carter, Rodney Dangerfield, Don Rickles, Jack Benny, Mansel Rubenstein and so many others. And there was not one single swear word in their comedy. Here are a few examples: *I just got back from a pleasure trip. I took my mother-in-law to the airport. *I've been in love with the same woman for 49 years! If my wife ever finds out, she'll kill me! *What are three words a woman never wants to hear when she's making love? "Honey, I'm home!" *Someone stole all my credit cards but I won't be reporting it. The thief spends less than my wife did. * ...
In 1959 my father and his partner were nominated and won the Grammy for Best Musical Comedy record. As a reference to the times and talents involved, the Best Comedy nominees were Mort Sahl, Lenny Bruce, Andy Griffith, Shelley Berman and Stan Freeberg. In 1985, I played guitar at the Tribute to Steve Goodman, allowing me to play with Arlo Guthrie, John Prine, Ritchie Havens, Daviv Broomberg, Bonnie Raitt, the Dirt Band and my late father. When the recording of that concert won the Grammy for Best Contempory Folk, the musicians involved were all issued ceritificates of participation. I would proudly display mine alongside my father's, but Hobbes peed on it. It's all about perspective.
Chicago's most listenable comedy show clocks in for its fourth year with a tighter format and a revamped playlist. Highlights include Bill Cosby on marriage, Robert Klein on dentists, the Smothers Brothers on the Smothers' mother, Bob and Ray on football half-time shows, Shelley Berman on the Steve Allen show, and Jay Leno on his parents.
...Saw Billy Crystal's "700 Sundays" last night. An amazing performance. A fascinating combination of remembrances and nostalgia with which most baby boomers can identify, combined with the singularly awesome aspects of his life and his family associations (in the world of New York jazz). All of this wrapped up and delivered with Crystal's incredible comedic skill, which last night seemed to bear traces of Sid Caesar, Carl Reiner, Milton Berle, Jerry Lewis, Woody Allen, Shelley Berman, and many others whom I can't recall at the moment. As demonstrated in this show, his two greatest loves outside of his family are comedy and jazz (and the people who make both). How could I not love this show?
Gertrude Stein's last words, according to Shelley Berman, were (approximately), "What was the question"? Funnier with the setup.

Some trivia in the aftermath of the death of Sen. Frank Lautenberg (D-N.J.): -- There are now only two remaining veterans of World War II in Congress: Reps. Ralph Hall (R-Texas) and John Dingell (D-Mich.); -- Assuming Gov. Chris Christie names a Republican replacement, it would be the first time New Jersey had a GOP senator since a previous vacancy was filled: In 1982, after Harrison Williams (D) resigned over his involvement in the Abscam scandal, Gov. Tom Kean appointed Nicholas Brady as a temporary successor. Now you know everything.
Still working, Shelley Berman writes poetry and tends to 'Better Boys' at home.

It is the 100th birthday of Actors' Equity Association. Actors: How did you get your Equity card?
Its that Shelley Berman was Bob Newhart before Bob Newhart was Bob Newhart. Not, like, in any legal sense though.
When I started out, a pretty girl did not go into comedy. If you saw a pretty girl walk into a nightclub, she was automatically a singer. Comedy was all white, older men. It was Jack Benny, Fred Allen, Bob Hope, Shelley Berman, Red Skelton ... even Amos and Andy were white men, which is hilarious if...
Dead Religion or New Life? Philippians 3:1-3 Introduction Many of you know that I love the music of to 50’s and 60’s and on and I also enjoy good comedy like old Jack Benny and Shelley Berman. Jack Benny also made movies. His last movie, "The Horn Blows At Midnight" was a big flop, so they make fun of it constantly. It is said Jack walks past a movie theater showing The Horn Blows at Midnight. He asked the girl at the ticket window if she had sold a lot of tickets. “I haven’t sold one all week” so Jack buys one. Later he confronts the manager “The girl said you are not selling tickets, yet the theater was full?” The manager replied "We rented it out to the morgue this week." Jack says … "You mean they are all dead?" "Yep," said the manager, "but the funny thing is that this movie is so bad that three of them got up and walked out!" May I suggest to you that many people in our churches are spiritually dead, not unlike those in the theater. There is a big difference between a personal relat ...

Marc Maron's *** pod of his interview with Shelley Berman is fab.
Shecky Greene also does a solid Shelley Berman impression. Saw him do it on unsold HBO pilot called The Founders.
In 1961 George Carlin was doing impressions in his act - one of which was Shelley Berman. I'd sure love to hear that.
Today is Monday, Oct. 1, the 275th day of 2012. There are 91 days left in the year. Today's Highlight in History: On Oct. 1, 1962, Johnny Carson debuted as host of NBC's "Tonight Show," beginning a nearly 30-year run; after being introduced to the audience by Groucho Marx, Carson received his first guests, actor-singer Rudy Vallee, actress Joan Crawford, singer Tony Bennett and comedian Mel Brooks. (The same day, Merv Griffin launched a daytime show, also on NBC; his guests were comedian Shelley Berman, opera singer Roberta Peters and journalist Adela Rogers St. Johns.) On this date: In 1861, during the Civil War, the Confederate navy captured the Union steamer Fanny in North Carolina's Pamlico Sound. In 1908, Henry Ford introduced his Model T automobile to the market. In 1910, the offices of the Los Angeles Times were destroyed by a bomb explosion and fire; 21 Times employees were killed.
