Didier Drogba Chelsea to Shanghai Shenhua Didier Drogba left Chelsea last summer as, perhaps, the greatest Stamford Bridge legend of them all having scored the decisive penalty that secured the European Cup for the west London club. The veteran striker opted to run down his contract with Chelsea - and departed in the perfect circumstances - and was courted by a number of Europe's elite when he became a free agent. Despite the offers to stay in Europe, Drogba opted for one final payday and signed for Chinese club Shanghai Shenhua - joining up with Former Chelsea teammate Nicolas Anelka. But things have not exactly panned out as Drogba would have hoped, and reports of financial meltdown and unpaid wages have led to speculation the Ivorian could make a swift exit from China.

Syrians dream of returning home SPORT Didier Drogba & Nicolas Anelka put Chinese football on the map If you ever have reason to seek out a video clip of the moment Didier Drogba arrived in China, make sure you turn down the volume. In scenes reminiscent of Beatlemania, the Former Chelsea striker emerges through the sliding doors at Shanghai airport to be greeted by ear-splitting screams. He is ushered through a vast swathe of Shanghai Shenhua fans, who chant his name, wave the team's flag and compete for a vantage point from which to snap a photo of their new hero. Frank Lampard is in Chelsea contract talks: what is really going on? Lampard's Chelsea deal expires at the end of the season, and he is this month free to agree a pre-contract deal with another side. He is not, despite what some rumours may say, about to leave Chelsea during January: his contract will not let him walk away, and Chelsea will not pay the £4m cost of sacking him. There are strong echoes of what happened last season with Didier Drogba: where the Ivorian held out for the best deal. In Drogba's case, he had already agreed to move to Shanghai Shenhua in January – no such move appears to be on the table for Lampard at this stage. The midfielder, who has now scored three times in a week for Chelsea, has been clear for some time there has been no recent dialogue between him and the club over his future. He says he is only thinking about remaining True Blue, and is desperate to do a deal. On Friday a story broke, saying that he was willing to take a £100k a week pay cut in order to stay. My info ...

Marcello Lippi has recently faced Didier Drogba in China and urged Milan to make him an offer, as “he’d form a great partnership” with Stephan El Shaarawy. The Ivory Coast international is currently training with Chelsea during the close season and could well leave Shanghai Shenhua. “If Robinho and Alexandre Pato really are leaving Milan, then I’d see Drogba doing better for the Rossoneri than Juventus,” Lippi told La Gazzetta dello Sport. “He played against my Guangzhou Evergrande recently and is still a beast. He really makes the difference on the field. “Drogba would be a precious addition to the squad both in Serie A and the Champions League. In technical terms, he’d form a great partnership with El Shaarawy.” However, as with the earlier interest from Juventus, Lippi does see one rather large obstacle. “He didn’t choose to go to China by following his heart or making a footballing decision. It was purely for the money, as he earns €1m per month. Do you think he’d agree to ...
Big money, but is China worth it for Drogba and co? If Frank Lampard is to swap Chelsea for China, he might do well to first consider the colourful experiences of his former team-mates Nicolas Anelka and Didier Drogba. Pay disputes, off-pitch rows and an alien culture have seen many of the foreign stars to have joined the Chinese Super League beating down the door to get out again, sometimes months after arriving, after being unable to settle. Former France striker Anelka became the first genuine world football figure to play in China when he was snapped up by Shanghai Shenhua for a widely reported 175,000 pounds ($283,000) a week 10 months ago. He was joined in Shanghai in the summer by Drogba, who signed for an eye-watering 200,000 pounds a week. But the 33-year-old Anelka quickly saw his move turn sour and is in talks with the club to leave, with reports suggesting Drogba might go with him. Drogba is yet to receive his salary for December because of a boardroom row, said the Oriental Sports Daily, whil ...

QPR manager Harry Redknapp has admitted his openness in bringing Nicolas Anelka to Loftus Road, but he stated that any deal depends on how expensive it will be for the Premier League strugglers. The West London side's first win of the season over Fulham last weekend saw the club move up from the bottom of the league table, but the Rs are still five points adrift of safety even after Redknapp replaced Mark Hughes on the bench. Redknapp believes that the 33-year-old Anelka, said to be departing Chinese club Shanghai Shenhua, could help fire his side to safety, providing the terms suit both the club and the player. "[Anelka] is a player that is of interest to anybody. I think he is finishing in China so he is available," Redknapp told reporters. "He is a top player, so he is a player we would be interested in, but whether we could afford to get anywhere near him, I am not sure."
Ivory Coast captain, Didier Drogba has been highly tipped to win the Confederation of African Football and Globacom African player of the year award for the third time at Thursday night’s expected lavish ceremony in Accra. Drogba faces challenges from compatriot Yaya Toure who powered Manchester City to their first English Premier League title in over four decades in the year under review as well as the Cameroonian, Alexandre Song who began the year playing for Arsenal in England but is now a player of Spanish giants, FC Barcelona. A survey conducted by yours truly in the Ghanaian capital host of the high level awards, has indicated that Drogba is the estimated leading candidate. Many people have tipped the Elephants’ skipper who converted the last and winning penalty with his last kick for Chelsea to win the European Champions’ League trophy for the first time ever back in May, before switching to Chinese side, Shanghai Shenhua. Didier Drogba departure is costing Chelsea, says Neil Warnock Leeds manager Neil Warnock believes Chelsea are paying the price for letting Didier Drogba leave in the summer and is relieved he won’t be starting up front against his side tonight. Chelsea have already missed out on three trophies this season having been beaten in the Community Shield, Uefa Super Cup and Fifa Club World Club Cup and they have also been knocked out in the group stages of the Champions League. Drogba (above) thrived in such big games during his eight years at Stamford Bridge and scored nine goals in major finals, including their success in the Champions League and FA Cup last term. The 34-year-old wanted to stay, but Chelsea refused to give him the two-year contract he wanted and he joined Shanghai Shenhua on a free transfer instead. One of the reasons was so that £50m forward Fernando Torres, who is still struggling to make an impact at the club, could be guaranteed to be first choice striker. Warnock feels that decision ha ...

Word on the street this morning from people within the game, is Nicolas Anelka. He is about 32 now, he has asked to be released from his contract, and it looks like he will buy out his contract with Shanghai Shenhua from China where he earns about 12 Million euros a season. Not the type of player to ask to pay to leave, as we all know. Does he want a few last stabs at Europe with Celtic? This came from an ex Celtic player. Apparently the talks are in advanced stages, and he could play Champions League in the last 16 I am not 100% on this but to hear this from who I did, seems to fit with news today Anelka is trying to buy out his contract in China. I think this would be a great signing for Celtic; wages would not be a problem as he doesn’t need the money, and although he can be thought of as a money mercenary in football, but what a place to finish his playing days, as he still has playing days in him Watch this space. Rumour just now, but a strong one, would anyone in the Celtic fan base be in favour o ...
