Friends! Boston was so fabulous today, the whole city, and the world of running had a day of redemption. There were lots of tears of joy and heroics--Meb Keflezighi, a personal hero, became the first American man in 31 years to win the race. Two women broke the incredible 2 hour 20 minute barrier and winner Rita Jeptoo took a third victory. Four women were under the old course record, American Shalane Flanagan pushed the pace that made it happen even though she wound up in 7th. I'm tired and just in from a 6 hour TV broadcast, but honestly, it was the Race of the Century. Boston STRONG! Kathrine

What a wonderful Today's stats: Fastest female race in history (with Shalane Flanagan running the fastest time by a US woman on the course). Meb Keflezighi coming home with an American victory for the first time since 1983 (while wearing Sketchers). Local Craig Leon finishing 12th and the 5th American. There were 10 Americans in the top 20 male finishers. Ryan Hall had his marathon come back (forever and always will be my marathon crush). With all that excitement the most exciting part of the day was getting updates and cheering like crazy for my dad and sister. They are and continue to be my running heroes. They make me so proud each and every day and I am reminded again how lucky I am to be part of my crazy, fun loving, running family. And Jeff Riggin, even if you didn't beat Meb, I still love you! :) Now, what to do until next year...
Meb Keflezighi (San Diego, CA) wins the Boston Marathon!! I really wanted to see Shalane Flanagan win on the female side but she finished a very respectable 7th. She set a new course record, likely due to Shalane pushing the elite women's leading pack so hard for the first half of the race. Meb Keflezighi pulled off an incredible finish and is the first American to win Boston in 31 years. He is almost 39 years old. I think I'm going to head out for a run.

I don't watch much sports. But I get SUPER stoked for the Boston Marathon every year. Last year I was so heartbroken about the bombings and I am suspecting this year will be an epic comeback! And some of my FAVORITE elite runners are going to be tackling the Boston including Desiree Devila, Shalane Flanagan, and Amy Hastings. On the men's team I'm super excited about Meb and Ryan Hall. I'm sad that Kara Goucher isn't going to be competing but it will surely be a fantastic race! Does anyone else nerd out about the Boston?
Pleased to see Shalane Flanagan in lineup RT2014 Boston Marathon international elite field announced.

My number is 7. 7 random facts about myself: 1. I'm a CRAZY cat person. Seriously... I have 4 cats and they're like my children. 2. I love to run. It's my stress relief, and it's actually pretty healthy. 3. But on the contrary, I also love to bake, and I have trouble keeping my hand out of the cookie jar. 4. I love coffee. Sometimes I drink too much, and I can't sleep, but I NEED caffeine. 5. I've met Shalane Flanagan, Dean Karnazes, Mo Rocca, comic Mike Birbiglia, Dr. Ruth, Ron Jeremy, Ben Stein, among others. 6. I'm also a foodie. I can tell you the best restaurants in Muskegon bar none. I also know my way around a kitchen. Even tried to become a chef. That didn't work out. 7. I fought obesity and anorexia and conquered both. Like/comment on this status and I'll message you a number.
For the most part, my story of the 2013 Boston Marathon is very similar to many who have run it before me. From the first time I considered trying to qualify, and thinking "Oh, that won't be that hard," to realizing I may never be able to qualify, to the grueling training it took to become fast enough. But, Boston is the granddaddy of marathons! It is the one all marathoners strive for. Therefore, when I finally qualified, it was a huge relief!!   Once my entry to the marathon was accepted, I decided I would run it as a celebration, not as a race. I wasn't concerned about effort and pace, but just wanted to soak it all in.   Part of that celebration was the expo, which was AMAZING!! My wife (a faithful half marathoner, tempted to run a full some day), and I could not get enough of the expo. It was the best one we'd ever been to. Yes, we tend to geek out on that kind of thing. Who wouldn't get excited about seeing Kara Goucher, Shalane Flanagan, & Meb Keflezighi in person? Oh, and I chatted with Adam Gou ...
Last weekend some American athletes I was rooting for won the U.S. Championships in their events - Alysia Montano, Treniere Moser, Shalane Flanagan, Tyson *** Duane Solomon, Matt Centrowitz, Bernard Lagat, Galen Rupp, Evan Jager. Apparently I forgot the protocol was to run around my neighborhood pee-my-pants drunk, screaming like an a-hole and shootin' bottle rockets. Or maybe that's just for corporate sports?
Ready for day 2 in Des Moines. Can't wait to see Galen Rupp and Shalane Flanagan today
Can't believe I missed Shalane Flanagan and Kara Goucher race the 10,ooo meter Thursday eve and Galen Rupp who got the silver in London. Gonna see them run the 5,000 Sunday though!
RUPP AND FLANAGAN WIN US 10K, by Alfons Juck, EME News Des Moines (USA, Jun 20): Olympic silver medalist Galen Rupp won his fifth national 10 000 m crown in a row in heat and humid weather, biding his time until fewer than 800 meters remained to strike and securing a birth on the IAAF World Championships starting line in 28:47.32. The 27-year-old athlete led Oregon Project teammate Dathan Ritzenhein and Jerry Schumacher-coached Chris Derrick across the line in under 29:00 minutes (28:49.66 and 28:52.25). Fourth Ben True 29:07.26. After a quick opening lap of 72 seconds, Shalane Flanagan was never seriously challenged winning her third USA 10 000 m title by 34 seconds in 31:43.20. For Flanagan, 31, an Olympic bronze medalist, it was her 15th overall national title. Second Jordan Hasay 32:17.34 and third Tara Erdmann 32:24.16. Neither of this two is assured that they will run in Moscow because they have yet to earn either the IAAF „A“ or „B“ (32:05.00) standard for the event. Under USA Track & Field ...
Glory in the Gloaming, Flanagan and Rupp win 10,000m titles, by David Hunter June 20, 2013 Des Moines, Iowa As the shadows lengthened and dusk descended upon the Midwest, distance stars Shalane Flanagan and Galen Rupp closed an exciting opening day of the 2013 USA Outdoor Track & Field Championships by doing what they were expected to do: ringing up impressive wins in the 10,000 meter runs. Flanagan was all business. Undaunted by the 84 degree start temperature and on pace from the starting gun, the American 10,000 meter record holder made it clear there would be no dawdling warm-up laps this evening. After an opening circuit in 71 seconds, only fellow Olympian and training partner Kara Goucher and newly-minted Nike pro Jordan Hasay dared book passage on the Shalane Train. Amy Hastings, a 10,000 finalist in London, headed up a tidy chase pack. By the 3600 meter mark, Flanagan had dispatched all competitors. Her race rhythm – just a smidgen over 5:00 per mile pace – had gapped Goucher who was sli ...
