This morning I woke up in the city that never sleeps! Outside my hotel window on Seventh Avenue taxis are rushing, horns are honking, and the sun is shining directly into my 14th floor window. Two cups of espresso later I am ready to join the rush! I can't wait to get out there and hit all my favorite spots. Shopping for purses in Times Square, grabbing a knish from a street vendor, hitting Strawberry in the Empire State Building. Pick up is at 2:30, so no time to waste! Happy Sunday everybody :-D

From the Herald: Taylor said Wednesday there were no plans to sell the park, only the parcel where the no-longer-used Albany Police Department horse stables were located along Seventh Avenue. But a well-known developer in the area said Friday there was more to that decision. “They tried to auction (that parcel) but found out, as many already knew, they can’t sell it. If the city no longer uses the park, the park will revert back to the family that gave it to the city,” the developer, who asked that his name not be used, said in an email.

New York City steam system From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Steam vapor being vented through a typical Con Edison orange and white stack on Seventh Avenue at West 20th Street. Steam vapor such as this can be caused by a leak in Con Ed's steam system – which heats, cools and provides power for buildings in Manhattan up to East 89th and West 96th Street – or by cooler water contacting the outside of a steam pipe.[1] The New York City steam system is a district heating system which takes steam produced by steam generating stations and carries it under the streets of Manhattan to heat, cool, or supply power to high rise buildings and businesses. Some New York businesses and facilities also use the steam for cleaning, climate control and disinfection. The New York Steam Company began providing service in lower Manhattan in 1882. Today, Consolidated Edison operates the largest commercial steam system in the United States. The organization within Con Edison that is responsible for the system's operation ...

African American Fashion Arthur McGee was influenced by the African and Asian aesthetic, simplistic shapes and attention to detail. According to McGee, “his innovative use of fabric such as men pocketing fabric which he loved to paint ethnic designs on for women’s skirts and dress, and men’s tailoring fabrics for women’s wear”. His customers thought so, his designs were timeless and unique as Mr. Arthur Mitchell of the Dance Theater of Harlem stated, “Arthur’s designs are elegant, great fitting, relaxed with great style that always had the individual wearer in mind. His choice of fine suiting material for two piece outfits always elicits wonderful comments from everyone that sees me in a McGee original”. Arthur L. McGee was born in Detroit, Michigan in 1933. In 1951 at the age of 18 he saw a contest being promoted by the famous Traphagen School of Design on the back of a local paper in Detroit. Political strategising over chai: Source: The Hindu BJP to target a different tea shop in Chennai every day, say party sources Tea drinkers found, much to their disappointment, that the unexpected entertainment at their regular tea stall at Anna Salai was short-lived. The day after The Hindu published a report on ‘Chai pe charcha with NaMo,’ about the BJP’s new campaign strategy at a tea shop on Anna Salai, the entire paraphernalia was gone, and only the usual tea drinkers lingered there. “It was only for a day, Madam. They left with the television screens. We still have some posters that were left behind,” the tea-stall owner and his wife say. “They have probably gone to another tea stall,” the woman ventures, as an afterthought. Quite right, that. According to BJP party sources, the idea is to have a ‘chai pe charcha’ promoting their leader at a different tea shop every day. Angry outburst As with most public hearings of the sort, a recent one conducted by Chennai River Restoration Tru ...

Germantown slated for European-influenced residential project Local developer targets summer groundbreaking for Gramercy February 13, 2014 by William Williams Nashville-based developer Jim Creason announced today the development of Gramercy, an approximately $5 million neo-traditional row home project for which ground is slated to be broken this summer in Germantown. The building, the units in which will be for-purchase, will be located at the northeast corner of the Seventh Avenue and Monroe Street intersection and within the Germantown Historic Overlay District. Dear friends and family, I can hardly even find the words to describe how amazing this past month and a half has been! I could probably write a book on everything that God has done since I’ve arrived but I’ll try to give just a brief summary. The current school is the biggest school this YWAM base has ever experienced with almost 70 students and with all of the staff there could be 100+ people milling about at any given time. It was a bit overwhelming the first weekend when students were showing up every hour at the bus station or the airport but I’ve truly loved getting to know each and every one of them! There are 13 nations represented and it’s been so fun to see everyone getting to know different cultures and learning bits and pieces of new languages. The first week began with orientation during which the students began sharing their life stories with everyone. It’s always an emotionally tense and draining week for both the students and the staff but it’s amazing to see students begin to s ...
hey everybody! Just want to remind everyone that we're calling it tonight. Which means that we need to pack up and leave by 530 to be able to do soup and stuff while people are still out. we noticed last night and also I noticed during the drive in December that most people go indoors about 8 o'clock. What that means is most homeless go inside till most people go to their homes and then they come out of the woodwork. But we really don't want to hang out until 1:30 in the morning lol so we want to head out to southeast seventh Avenue at the St Francis shelter and do soup and lunches and clothing there. And then we'll head down to Burnside/Hawthorne Bridges.
The New York Renaissance, also known as the Renaissance Big Five and as the Rens, was an all-black professional basketball team established February 13, 1923, by Robert "Bob" Douglas in agreement with the Renaissance Casino and Ballroom. The Casino and Ballroom at 138th Street and Seventh Avenue in Harlem was an entertainment complex including a ballroom that served as the Big Five's home court. Following each game, a dance took place. The success of the Rens shifted the focus of black basketball from amateur teams to professional teams. Initially, the Rens played mostly in Harlem, but by the end of the 1920s, as attendance began to dwindle, the team could be found more often playing on the road, barnstorming across the country out of necessity. The Renaissance are also the topic of the 2011 documentary On the Shoulders of Giants. The Rens were one of the dominant basketball teams of the 1920s and 1930s. The team played its first game on November 3, 1923. That night the Rens played a team of white players ...

For once there is nothing up my sleeve, Just some scars of a life that used to trouble me, I used to run at first sight of the sun, now I lay here waiting for you to wake up. The city outside still sounds like it's on fire, you put on new sheets- the white flag of a Saturday night. I know we stayed up talking in circles, but I like to think the symmetry will keep me close to you. For everyone I'm about to prove wrong? YOU KEEP THE LIGHT ON, You're the only one who knows me better than the truth. So, despite what I've done? I PRAY TO GOD THAT WE CAN MOVE ON, Cause so far you are the best thing that this life has yet to lose. So if you're gonna leave? If you're gonna go? I can't bare to sleep without you in my arms... I know we got caught up slipping through crowds of people and losers- BUT YOU MUST NOT LET THEM TAKE YOU- THEY DON'T KNOW YOU LIKE I DO. Do you remember when we stayed up til the sun stretched the room? I used to blame it on the queens walking down seventh avenue, it's been years now since we ...

Michael, Lit this candle in celebration of the light that shines in my heart in your memory. Even though we had such a short time together, you have forever colored my life with an amazing impression of love and adventure. If it wasn't for you and your generosity I would have not known how to find my way around NYC and hail down that bus in the middle of seventh avenue 8 months pregnant so my family wouldn't miss it 17 yrs ago. I wouldn't have known how smooth a 928S drives;) or the abundance of sharing unconditionally or how to throw an awesome pool party or how to live fearlessly and not hold anything back! You opened my heart and eyes to so much more, I never forget. You live forever in my heart-mind and in those that I share the effects of our time together. With honor and gratitude to your life, HLB

"FOR BY GRACE YOU HAVE BEEN SAVED THROUGH FAITH, AND THAT NOT OF YOURSELVES; IT IS THE GIFT OF GOD." EPHESIANS 2:8 When I was nine years old, I accepted Christ as my Savior and requested membership in the Seventh Avenue Baptist Church. Halfway down the aisle, my legs wouldn't carry me and that's when the pastor's wife, Anna Lee, met me and walked the remaining distance by my side. Fast forward four and a half decades; Anna Lee was dying of pancreatic cancer at the local hospice. I went to visit and pray with her. "You walked with me all those years ago," I told her, "so I'm here to help you make your heavenly journey." When they had Anna Lee's estate sale, I purchased her Victorian cameo, so I would have something to remember her. But on the day I took the brooch to the jeweler to have it made into a slide, it dropped into the heater vent of my car. The cost to retrieve it was prohibitive. "Now i don't have anything to remember my friend by," I told the jeweler. I was inconsolable. "We sell lots of pretty ...

Once in a while I encounter something that nails everything Live Unbound stands for. Take the time to read it, I promise it's worth it! "For most of my life, I followed a safe path. I remember in vivid detail the moment I began the journey. A few months out of college, I stood on the corner of Seventh Avenue and Bleecker Street in New York City wearing pastel-blue balloon trousers. I lingered at the intersection peering deep into my future, contemplating the choice between the secure and the uncertain, between the creative and the logical, the known and the unknown. I dreamed of being an artist and a writer, but inasmuch as I knew what I wanted, I felt compelled to consider what was “reasonable” in order to safeguard my economic future. Even though I wanted my best friend once referred to as “the whole wide world,” I thought it was prudent to compromise. I told myself it was more sensible to aspire for success that was realistically feasible, perhaps even failure-proof. It never once occurred to b ...

Les Aaron I came back fromVietnam and arrived in San Francisco before the Summer of Spring andeventually migrated back to New York's Greenwhich Village where I was living before I went overseas for five years. The changes were manifest, the folk movement had returned after the Blackballing of the 50's and I ran into Dave van Ronk holding court at my favorite deli on Seventh Avenue and Bleeker.I had known Dave since childhood and didn't know that he was already recognized as the Mayor of Greenwich Village; for Dave, as modest as he was, would never draw my attention to himself. It was good being back. A number of people were making names for themselves. My friend, Ted Jones had made the cover of Time magazine, Richie Havens was performing at Pandora's Box, Tiny Tim was at the Vanguard, and everywhere you looked, the Village was swinging. My hangout was Figaros on McDougal where I sat and sipped coffee and looked out on the world while in the background the classical music provided counterpoint. I was still ...

1915-01-12 Margaret Danner, an African American writer, was born on this date in 1915. Born in Kentucky, Danner and her parents moved to Chicago when she was young. When Margaret Esse Danner was in the eighth grade, she wrote her first prize-winning poem, "The Violin." Although it would be many years before her first book of poetry was published, the image and theme of the violin reappeared many times in later works. She attended Loyola and Northwestern Universities and began her association with prominent writers partly through her affiliation with the avant-garde magazine Poetry: The Magazine of Verse, where she eventually became assistant editor. In 1945, Danner won second prize in the Poetry Workshop of the Midwestern Writers Conference. In the early 1960s she moved to Detroit to become poet-in-residence at Wayne State University where she established Boone House, an arts center for children. In collaboration with poet Dudley Randall, he and Danner published "Poem Counterpoem" in 1966, a volume of Bla ...

The site at 99 Seventh Avenue South in Greenwich Village today houses the Garage restaurant, but seventy-five years ago, it was home to the Nut Club. The building was constructed in 1919 as a garage after the lot was cleared for the southward extension of Seventh Avenue in 1917.
At certain times I have no race, I am me. When I set my hat at a certain angle and saunter down Seventh Avenue, Harlem City, feeling as snooty as the lions in front of the Forty-Second Street Library, for instance. So far as my feelings are concerned, Peggy Hopkins Joyce on the Boule Mich with her gorgeous raiment, stately carriage, knees knocking together in a most aristocratic manner, has nothing on me. The cosmic Zora emerges. I belong to no race nor time. I am the eternal feminine with its string of beads... ~ Zora Neale Hurson, ‘How It Feels to Be Colored Me’

JM: I think it was the 4th of July, 1958. I was sitting around in Philly with nothing to do, and decided to go to New York and see what the guys were doing there. I started walking up Seventh Avenue and saw Small's Paradise, which had a sign in the window: "The Jazz Messengers." I went in and sat at the bar while they were playing, and after the set, Art comes over to me and totally out of the blue says, "Would you like to work for me?" And I said, "Yeah!" And that was it! I still don't understand that to this day. Maybe someone in the band said something to him, but he just walked right up and asked me. I told him I was playing Fender bass guitar with a rock band, but that didn't seem to phase him. But I played upright bass with the Jazz Messengers, although a couple of times I let him hear me on the Fender.

QUEEN EDITTA SHERMAN - Born Edith Rinaolo in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on July 9, 1912. Died in New York City on November 1, 2013. She was 101 years old. She learned the art of portrait photography from her father, who had studios in New Jersey. She married Harold Sherman, a sound engineer and inventor, who was her business partner. When he became blind and later died from diabetes, she took up portrait photography full time in order to be able to bring up her five young children as a single mom. From 1949 until 2010, she lived in Studio 1208 at 881 Seventh Avenue, New York, New York 10019, one of the two towers Andrew Carnegie built alongside Carnegie Hall to provide rental income for the concert enterprise downstairs. Top of the AM to The Real! A Lil something for y'all to chew on today; enjoy! Wallace Thurman Cordelia the Crude (Thurman’s Beit rag zu Fire!!) Physically, if not mentally, Cordelia was a Physically prostitute, meaning that although she had not yet realized the moral import of her wanton promiscuity nor become mercenary, she had, nevertheless, become quite blasé and bountiful in the matter of bestowing sexual favors upon persuasive and likely young men. Yet, despite her seeming lack of discrimination, Cordelia was quite particular about the type of male to whom she submitted, for numbers do not necessarily denote a lack of taste and Cordelia had discovered after several months of active observation that one could find the qualities one admires or reacts positively to in a varied hodge-podge of outwardly different individuals. The scene of Cordelia's activities was The Roosevelt Motion Picture Theatre on Seventh Avenue near 145th Street. Thrice weekly the program changed, and thrice weekly Cordelia woul ...

The following was copied/pasted from the NY Times site, written by Vivian Yee, published today. - This is not an only in New York story. This is an only in Times Square story, in a place where the Beer Man and the Weed Man in a Box can star as the principals; a different Weed Man can serve as the falsely accused; and Alien and the Predator can stand in as the witnesses to a low-rent attack in a high-rent district. More than six months ago, the Weed Man in a Box, or Weed Head to some, began wandering around the pedestrian plaza at 46th Street and Seventh Avenue, a cardboard box on his head and a sign over his chest, cajoling cash from tourists with a simple pitch: “I am the weed man. I’m too sexy for you to see me.” As charming as this tactic may have been to some, his appearance rankled the other creative panhandlers of Times Square, who make their living not by donning Elmo suits or coating themselves with metallic paint, but by simply advertising their need for marijuana, beer or both on handwritt ...

Hugh Bell Photographer Interviewer: Michael Valentine March 6, 2000 Where were you born? New York City. Tell us briefly about your childhood and your parents. We lived on 119th Street. In those days you could move around a lot. You could have an apartment every month if you wanted to. We lived there for a while and then went to 118th Street, then over to Manhattan Avenue, then to 2010 Seventh Avenue. What were the professions of your parents? My father was a probation officer in the family court, which is a New York City civil service job, so there was not much money at all. Amy mother worked in women’s were sewing. At what age did you first become influenced by photography? I think I was about sixteen or seventeen. I looked at these magazines and I decided that I wanted to be a photographer. One shouldn’t underestimate the profoundness of these schlock stores on Bleecker Street. Gagosian started out by selling posters. Many of these framers pay exhorbitant rents and work long hours and for decades have been testing the waters to see what sells and doesn’t sell. Underestimating the tourists either, as being schmoes is self-destructive. They are people with lives from other places who have time and money to visit New York City and visit the Village for a day trip. What is bad about that? Some of them, it is true look at me like I am some charming scenery fixture and I don’t like that since I am trying to cross traffic with my dog and weighted down with heavy packages, worried about paying my deadly bills and debts. They may want to start at the beginning and play with Ethan while I am waiting for a traffic light to change, cars careening down Seventh Avenue, roads blocked and in heavy traffic. The small voices are the ones we must listen to and the honky tonk about New York and lowe ...

The killing spree continued yesterday after two men were murdered in separate incidents. The first murder occurred at about 8 am in Seventh Avenue, Malick when Eddy Spencer was gunned down while on his way to work. Spencer, 27, an office assistant and driver at the Water and Sewerage Authority (WASA) was walking along Seventh Avenue when a car pulled alongside him and the occupants opened fire. He was rushed to the Port-of-Spain General Hospital where he succumbed to his injuries. When Newsday visited the area yesterday, residents described Spencer as a respectable person who was very friendly to many in the community. Residents said they heard several gunshots and when they looked out their windows they saw Spencer’s body on the ground. “The youths really have to stop killing each other, this killing thing is too much now,” one resident said. Those who know me or read my reviews will be used to seeing me write up my impressions of live shows attended. You will also be aware that I travel quite some distance to see my favourite musicians perform. The musician that I’ve clocked up the most air miles for is Ellis Paul. He’s reuniting with his former band mates in End Construction Productions to play two benefit shows at Club Passim on 24th February for Stuart Ferguson, a friend who has been diagnosed with multiple myeloma. I can’t be there so won’t be writing a review however I can write a preview…   I first heard Paul’s voice on a sampler album FOLLOW THAT ROAD put out by Philo in 1994 and was smitten immediately – the song was King of Seventh Avenue which to this day remains a favourite. What I didn’t know then (but do now) is that Paul’s early foray into the music business saw him join forces with three other songwriters Jim Infantino, Brian Doser and Jon Svetkey in the collective End Construction Productions. Formed in 1989 ...
Singled out for being White, and Poor by NYC standards.. Hate Crime Committed, Hate Crime Charge Yesterday two incident adding up to a hate crime was realized after I called it in. Yesterday morning while walking onto the Ferry from home I was accosted by two black males, mid to late 20s wearing work boots and jeans, for walking too slow. Last night while in Mc Donalds on Seventh Avenue/34th Street in NYC after watching over a so called friend, a Nigerian African, an unemployed white collar worker and alleged father of a student of a local reputable university in Mc Donalds who with the security officer for no just cause singled me out calling me a *** then making an example of me for no reason within an African circle of peers.perhaps all from Columbia Univ.(?) I just returned from the bathroom and was unsure as to why they were acting like a mob toward me since I did not sleep but stayed watch over my Nigerian friend and his possessions while he rested...so I thought!

Bob Dylan It’s no secret that Bob Dylan has impacted the music industry significantly. At age 71 with a music career spanning five decades and 35 studio albums under his belt, what makes this dynamic poet from the Midwest so successful? When Beatty was pregnant with her Robert, she and Abe moved to an apartment. Five years later they had another son named David. In 1946 Abe was diagnosed with Polio. He was bedridden for six months and in that time he had lost his job. A year later he found work at his brothers’ company, Micka Electric. Mayor Thomas Walter Erwin, Jr. April 1955 - April 1957 Walter Erwin is probably better known for his extensive real-estate transactions than for the two years he was mayor, but he has been good in both politics and business. Born in Dallas, Texas, July 20, 1908, he came to Corsicanaabout 1936 and established the Erwin-Beasley Wholesale Grocery with Lonnie Beasley. He married and brought to Corsicana a most attractive wife, Ruth Peevy of Dallas, and they have three grown sons, Ed, Walter III, and Wilson. He resides at 1441 Oaklawn. With two years prior service as a commissioner, he was 46 years old when elected mayor in 1955. In line with the integration movement, he hired the first *** policeman, Earnest Davis. Construction was begun on the new outfall sewer plant on Postoak Creek. Traffic was becoming heavy on Seventh Avenue, so he widened and repaved ...

We had a community member who couldn't attend her "Neighborhood Gathering" when we were in her neighborhood walk into our office and submit her wishlist for Polson. Her wishes are: • Preserve irreplaceable open space surrounding Polson, much as Missoula is doing with Pattee Canyon, Mount Sentinel, Mount Jumbo, and Blue Mountain. • Set aside patches of open space within the city limits. There are several small wetlands that are especially significant. • Create more neighborhood parks. • Ask the riverfront landowner directly to the south of Riverside Park if she would be willing to sell or donate land to enlarge the park. • Length the Carol Sherick Walking Trail through the vacant fields where the old plywood plant was located, and eventually extend it to the soccer fields on Seventh Avenue and the Kerr Dam Road trail. • Plant more trees at Salish Point. • Extend the wonderful Main Street Project with its flowers, classy street lights, benches, low curbs, etc. to adjacent streets, especially F ...
