'Stupid' Smalling cost United - Van Gaal Manchester United manager Louis Van Gaal said that Chris Smalling's "stupid" dismissal had fatally undermined his side's chances in their 1-0 Premier League defeat at Manchester City on Sunday. Van Gaal: Manchester Derby is “biggest” he’ll manage; Rooney in, Falcao out NBC Sports Smalling was sent off in the 38th minute at the Etihad Stadium after receiving quick-fire yellow cards for trying to block a clearance by City goalkeeper Joe Hart and then scything down James Milner. City eventually prevailed through a 63rd-minute Sergio Aguero strike, leaving the champions six points behind leaders Chelsea and seven points above United, and Van Gaal said Smalling's red card was the turning point. "In the derby you have to be careful. The second yellow card was stupid," he told BBC Sport. "As a player you have to control your aggression. I didn't see the first yellow, but the second you know as a player you have a yellow, so you have to handle it differently. I said ...

Two of world football's finest strikers go head-to-head at the Etihad Stadium on Sunday as Manuel Pellegrini's champions welcome Jose Mourinho's chief contenders English football loses its superstars. Or so it seems, anyway, amid the talent drain to Spain. Yet on Sunday, two goal machines meet, beginning a duel for Premier League glory, the Golden Boot and perhaps even the unofficial title of the world's best centre forward. Luis Suarez, Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Robert Lewandowski and the Manchester United pair of Robin Van Persie and Radamel Falcao are contenders but two of the prime candidates are Diego Costa and Sergio Aguero. The Chelsea target man has made statistically the best start to a Premier League career, with seven goals in four games. The Manchester City poacher has the lowest minutes-per-goal ratio of anyone in the division's history who has struck 30 times or more: he goes just 114 minutes between strikes on average. The predators leading the line at the Etihad Stadium on Sunday are striker ...
Stoke City registered their first Premier League victory in Manchester as Mame Biram Diouf's fine solo effort stunned the champions. Man City 0-1 Stoke Diouf 58′ The Senegal international and former United striker raced 70 yards before slotting under Joe Hart. The hosts could have had a late penalty but Yaya Toure was booked for diving. Stoke had lost all 12 previous league matches at the Etihad Stadium and Old Trafford and manager Mark Hughes will savour this victory at his former club. The odds were stacked against the visitors who had not even scored at Manchester City in the Premier League By contrast, Manuel Pellegrini's men had failed to hit the net in just one of their last 70 home matches and the Chilean started with Sergio Aguero, who had taken just 23 seconds to score off the bench against Liverpool, up front. The Potters had failed to keep a clean sheet in their last 12 league matches but a resolute performance from Hughes's side saw them do just that and Diouf's second-half strike capped a . ...

Transfer News: Vincent Kompany hails Manchester City's summer business Vincent Kompany has saluted Manchester City's summer business, with fresh faces acquired and new deals agreed. Four additions have been made at the Etihad Stadium, with Eliaquim Mangala, Fernando, Willy Caballero and Bacary Sagna joining the Premier League champions. Their arrival will help to add depth to a squad already brimming with world-class talent. They will also help to complement key men on Manuel Pellegrini’s books. City have worked hard to ensure that the core of a successful side has been retained, with Samir Nasri, Aleksandar Kolarov, Sergio Aguero and club captain Kompany agreeing contact extensions. It feels like a productive window for those in the City camp, with old and new pulling in the same direction.
PL PREVIEW FOR 17th August Newcastle - Man City 20:45 NST This is the reverse of last season's opening Barclays Premier League fixture when Newcastle United lost 0-4 at the Etihad Stadium. The Citizens have won four and lost none of their last five opening weekend league fixtures, keeping four clean sheets in the process. Newcastle have won just once in the last five seasons in their opening match (D2 L2). The Magpies have failed to score in their last three Barclays Premier League clashes with Manchester City. Man City full backs Aleksandar Kolarov (7) and Pablo Zabaleta (6) assisted more goals than any other defenders in the 2013-14 Premier League. Frank Lampard is the top scoring midfielder in Premier League history with 171 goals, as many as Aguero, Dzeko, Yaya Toure, David Silva and Vincent Kompany combined. Despite winning only two of their opening eight away games last season, City still ended the campaign with 34 road points. Only Liverpool and Arsenal (35) gained more (Man Utd & Chelsea also coll ...
Sergio Aguero insists he is not tempted by a move to either Barcelona or Real Madrid this summer and will stay at Manchester City next season. The two Spanish giants have been linked with a move for the former Atletico Madrid striker as they look to bolster their ranks this summer, but Aguero insists he has no intention of leaving the Etihad Stadium. He said: "There's lots of talk about Real Madrid and Barcelona. It's always the same every year, but the truth is that I'm going to stay at City. I'm very happy and I'm going to continue there." The 26-year-old Argentina international has been a huge hit at City since moving to England from Atletico in 2011, and has helped them win two Premier League titles in three years. MUST HAVE HAD A BIRTHDAY CAKE LOL!
Joe Hart believes Premier League champions Manchester City have now established themselves as one of English football's superpowers. Sheikh Mansour's takeover in 2008 heralded a new era at the club, with global stars such as Sergio Aguero, Yaya Toure and David Silva being brought to the Etihad Stadium. And City's haul of two Premier League titles, the FA Cup and the Capital One Cup in the last three years is evidence for Hart that they are now among the country's footballing elite.
Sergio Aguero has rejected talk he could leave Manchester City this summer, insisting he plans to win more trophies at the Etihad Stadium.
Zabaleta: We're hungry for the title (PA) Monday 28 April 2014 Share Pablo Zabaleta has tipped Manchester City to swipe the English Premier League title in the season's final seconds, just as they did in 2012. Two added-time goals sent the title to the Etihad Stadium two years ago, as Edin Dzeko and Sergio Aguero salvaged a 3-2 home victory over Queens Park Rangers. It meant City claimed their first top flight title since 1968 on goal difference, and after Sunday's unflinching 2-0 win at Crystal Palace, Zabaleta believes Manuel Pellegrini's men are ready for a repeat of 2012. "We know that we've been in this situation two years ago and I think we had been talking about that last week," said Zabaleta, well aware City could now be crowned champions on goal-difference once again. "The most important thing we've learned from that experience was the team spirit to keep fighting until the end. "Whoever ends as the champions, it is because they will deserve it, and we are one of those teams who will fight for it ...
Man City STUMBLE AS EVERTON FAIL: Manchester City were forced to come from behind to earn a 2-2 draw against Sunderland at the Etihad Stadium, but the result put a dent in their title chances and left Gus Poyet's Black Cats six points from safety. Fernandinho's second-minute strike was cancelled out by a second-half brace from Connor Wickham, before Samir Nasri earned a late draw for the hosts. City made their presence felt from the off and when Lee Cattermole was caught in possession, the hosts pounced to take advantage. Sergio Aguero raced to the edge of the Sunderland box, before a sliding a ball into the path of Fernandinho, who fired into the roof of Vito Mannone's goal. Sunderland captain John O'Shea spurned two headed chances and Fabio Borini shot wide of the target having found space in the City box as the visitors failed to seize their opportunities to draw level. Despite City dominating possession throughout the second half, it was Sunderland who snatched the second goal. Emanuele Giaccherini b ...
Sunderland hold City, Crystal Palace cruise Liverpool's position atop the English Premier League table was strengthened on Wednesday when title rivals Manchester City were held to a 2-2 draw at home to bottom club Sunderland. Beaten 3-2 at Liverpool on Sunday, City were bidding to close to within four points of Brendan Rodgers's side in the first of their two games in hand. Fernandinho's 2nd-minute goal at the Etihad Stadium put City on track, but after Connor Wickham scored twice in the last 17 minutes, the hosts needed a fortuitous 88th-minute equaliser from Samir Nasri just to rescue a point. The result left City six points below Liverpool in third place and although Manuel Pellegrini's side still have a game in hand, the title is inching ever closer to Anfield. City were without injured midfielder Yaya Toure, but top scorer Sergio Aguero returned to their starting line-up alongside Alvaro Negredo as Pellegrini made five changes to the team that lost at Liverpool. The hosts made an ideal start, with Ne ...
TOP TEN MOST RICHEST PLAYERS IN EPL There are some well known reports on who is the highest paid player in the Premier League as Wayne Rooney recently signed a colossal £300,000- a-week deal at Manchester United. Of course whilst earning high wages at a club does contribute towards overall wealth, footballers have several other avenues through which they can make money. So here are the 10 richest players currently plying their trade in the English top tier. 10. Sergio Aguero, Manchester City - £24m Arrived at the Etihad Stadium in 2011 for a whopping £38m and is said to earn around £9.6m a year with the Citizens and is midway through a five- year deal with the club. Therefore this fortune is only set to go up - especially if the Argentine can score goals as important as the last minute winner that earned them the title in 2012. 9. Yaya Toure, Manchester City - £25m Aguero's City team-mate now and a midfielder who upon first arriving in England in 2009 from Barcelona was reported to be the highest pai ...

Tonight's BPL Fixtures Tuesday, 25 March 2014 21:45 Arsenal vs Swansea Newcastle vs Everton Man Utd vs Man City Preview David Moyes refused to reveal whether any of his injured centre-halves will be available for Manchester United's crunch derby against rivals City on Tuesday. Chris Smalling (hamstring), Jonny Evans (calf) and Rio Ferdinand (back) sat out the 2-0 win at West Ham on Saturday, but manager Moyes was giving no clues away regarding their fitness when questioned on the matter at his pre-match press conference. Winger Antonio Valencia (eye) is a doubt but defender Nemanja Vidic (suspension) and striker Robin Van Persie (knee) are definitely unavailable. Vincent Kompany will return from suspension to bolster City's back-line. Kompany sat out City's 5-0 thumping of Fulham at the Etihad Stadium after his sending-off in the previous week's Premier League win at Hull. Man City PLAN TO SIGN CHELSEA STRIKER.. Etihad Stadium boss Manuel Pellegrini is set to offload Bosnian forward Edin Dzeko and summer signing Stevan Jovetic, who has suffered with injuries all season, could be sacrificed as the Chilean looks to conduct a summer shake-up. Sergio Aguero and Alvaro Negredo will still act as Pellegrini's first choice strike-pairing but the Man City boss will look to supplement the pair with experienced Spaniard Torres. The 29 year old cost Chelsea £50m and has come nowhere near justifying the British transfer record outlay and is now something of a bit-part player under boss Jose Mourinho. Torres has started just 13 Premier League fixtures this term and his overall tally of 19 goals in 102 top tier appearances for the Blues is fairly woeful and one would imagine a Stamford Bridge exit is on the cards. However it seems more likely that the former Liverpool man would seek a move to a club that could offer him regular first team football and a move back to La Liga seems more li ...
GO BARCA GO Manchester City 0-2 Barcelona Last updated 19-Lab-2014 1:13 sn. GMT+3 Manuel Pellegrini criticises referee Eriksson By Phil McNulty Chief football writer at Etihad Stadium Manchester City's Champions League ambitions look all but extinguished after Lionel Messi and Dani Alves gave Barcelona victory in the last-16 first leg at Etihad Stadium. Messi broke the deadlock from the spot in the 54th minute after he was fouled by City defender Martin Demichelis, who was also sent off for a challenge that was initially made outside the penalty area. And despite a defiant response from Manuel Pellegrini's side, Alves delivered what is surely the decisive blow when he exchanged passes with Neymar before sliding a cool finish under City keeper Joe Hart in the final minute. City's supporters applauded their side's efforts at the final whistle but the subdued atmosphere around the ground moments later reflected the brutal reality that the task of recovering this tie is surely beyond them in the second leg at ...
PREVIEW/Analysis/Discussions Man City Vs Barcelona | Etihad Stadium | 19:45hrs. Live Text Commentary to follow at 19:30hrs. Following Jose Mourihno's comments that Man City will face the worst Barca side in recent times, we take a look at the teams' chances below: Barcelona had scored 100 this season by February, the only team in Europe to have bettered that is Man City with 115 goals. Alvaro Negrodo and Sergio Aguero who will miss this game have managed 49 goals between them. Fernandinho has passed fitness test and likely to partner Yaya Toure as double pivot in a 4-2-3-1 formation that is likely to see Samir Nasri in a central role with David Silva at the left. Stevan Jotevic will likely operate in the middle of attack, Jesus Navas at the right wing and Negredo leading the attack. Barcelona is likely to deplore their favorite 4-3-3 set up for another night of passing and possession game of tiki taka. Jordi Alba will contest with Adriano at the left back position with Adriano being a favorite due to his ...
Fernandinho is set to make his Manchester City comeback against Barcelona on Tuesday but Sergio Aguero has been ruled out. Brazilian midfielder Fernandinho has missed City’s last three games with a muscle injury but trained on both days since Saturday's 2-0 FA Cup win over Chelsea, and manager Manuel Pellegrini confirmed he is available for the first leg of the last-16 tie at the Etihad Stadium on Tuesday. "He has a chance because he is in the squad list," Pellegrini told his prematch news conference. "We will see [on Tuesday] who are the 11 starters. He worked without any problems." It means Pellegrini faces a decision whether to bring back the Brazilian or to keep Javi Garcia in the team for the Champions League tie. Aguero is still sidelined by a calf problem which is also likely to keep him out of the weekend's Premier League match against Stoke City. Pellegrini added: "Aguero is not fit. We will see if he can be fit on Saturday but maybe that also is difficult." The Chilean is wary of Spanish champ ...

This match was only going to go one way – at least in the eyes of the pundits – until Chelsea showed everyone else that it was possible not just to beat Manchester City at home, but to come away with a clean-sheet, too. Jose Mourinho’s tactics worked to perfection the last time these two sides met and it will be interesting to see if he attempts the same thing again…and what Manuel Pellegrini has up his sleeve to counter it. The hosts are without injured pair Sergio Aguero and Fernando, while Chelsea face the huge blow of missing Gary Cahill ...

Already this season, both sides have met in both legs of the English Premier League where Fernando Torres's last minutes goal gave Chelsea a 2-1 victory at the Stamford Bridge in the first leg. While Fernandinho, Matija Nastsic and Sergio Aguero are still out injured. Chelsea on the other hand have Fernando Torres back, fit and ready fo ...
Manchester City defender Matija Nastasic (knee) has joined the club's injury list ahead of their midweek Premier League clash with Sunderland. The Serbian is not expected to be out long but misses Wednesday's contest at the Etihad Stadium along with striker Sergio Aguero (hamstring), playmaker Samir Nasri (knee) and midfielders Fernandinho and Javi Garcia (muscle injuries). Key midfielder Yaya Toure is available after escaping retrospective punishment following an off-the-ball incident involving Norwich's Ricky van Wolfswinkel last weekend. Wes Brown will miss out for Sunderland through suspension. The 34-year-old central defender will sit out both Wednesday's visit to Manchester and Saturday's FA Cup fifth-round tie against Southampton after being sent off for the second time this season - a further red card was later rescinded in November - in the 2-0 home defeat by Hull at the weekend. January signing Santiago Vergini is likely to deputise, while fellow defender Carlos Cuellar (hip) and striker Steven ...
Manchester City - Sunderland Preview: Hosts must get back in the goals against bogey team Manchester City can hardly be dubbed goal-shy but they welcome Sunderland on Later after drawing blanks in their last two Premier League games. Manuel Pellegrini's side have caught the eye with a series of pulsating attacking displays in the top flight this season and have scored more goals than anyone else in the division with 68 in 25 games. The Chilean will be keen for his wealth of forward options to rediscover their free-scoring ways against Gus Poyet's men at the Etihad Stadium after a 1-0 defeat at home to fellow title challengers Chelsea was followed by a disappointing 0-0 draw with Norwich City at Carrow Road on Saturday. City's barren run, albeit a minor blip, has coincided with an injury to star striker Sergio Aguero, who missed both games with a hamstring injury. The Argentina international has 15 goals in 17 Premier League appearances this season but will be unavailable again on Wednesday, meaning that t ...
Man City's £600m investment is paying off - bursting their bubble is Mourinho's biggest challenge since returning to Chelsea One of the most interesting figures in Manchester City's recent accounts showed that the club has spent more than £600million on incoming transfers since the Abu Dhabi takeover of 2008. Robinho, Emmanuel Adebayor, Carlos Tevez, Craig Bellamy, Sergio Aguero, David Silva, Yaya Toure. It is an astonishing list of talent. Tonight at the Etihad Stadium is the reason City have invested so extravagantly. A Barclays Premier League game against Chelsea and Jose Mourinho. Second plays third and City have the chance to go top. Is it a shootout for the title? Not quite but it feels like it. City will be without Aguero, who is injured. Manuel Pellegrini has said it will be "difficult" for Fernandinho to be fit for Manchester City’s Champions League clash with Barcelona and that although Sergio Aguero will definitely be out he expects Samir Nasri to be available. • Curtis: Time to start another run City manager Pellegrini stressed there was no chance that top scorer Aguero would recover from a hamstring strain in time to face the Spanish champions at the Etihad Stadium on Feb. 18. "He is working with the physio," he added. "He has started running, but he will not be ready for Barcelona." Midfielder Fernandinho sustained a muscle strain in training on Sunday and sat out Monday's 1-0 defeat to Chelsea.
Pellegrini feels frustration Manchester City boss Manuel Pellegrini felt the 1-0 home defeat to Chelsea was a frustrating match of missed chances. City had 25 shots in Monday night’s Etihad Stadium showdown against their title rivals, but only managed to get three on target in the 90 minutes. The visitors were more dangerous, with a third of their 18 shots testing Joe Hart in the City goal and a further three hitting the woodwork. Even then, City had chances to *** an equaliser at the death as David Silva and Stevan Jovetic both came close to finding a way past Petr Cech. Pellegrini pointed towards the absence of two of his key players – Sergio Aguero and Fernandinho – both of whom were sidelined through injury. “We had clear chances to score at least two goals but didn’t do it, and they had two or three shots against the post,” the Chilean told Sky Sports. “It was a very close game to play against Chelsea without (Sergio) Aguero and Fernandinho. “It’s important to note that we were m .. ...

escape scare, Liverpool win Sergio Aguero scored a hat-trick as Manchester City escaped a huge FA Cup upset by coming from behind to win 4-2 at home to second-tier Watford on Saturday. Beaten Championship play-off finalists last season, Watford went 2-0 up inside 30 minutes through Fernando Forestieri and Troy Deeney to leave free-scoring City at risk of a shock defeat. However, Aguero struck three times in the last half an hour, with Aleksandar Kolarov also on target, to send last season's beaten finalists into the fifth round. With Watford 15th in the Championship, they were given little chance of pulling off an upset at the Etihad Stadium, but they took the lead in the 21st minute when Forestieri beat Costel Pantilimon. It was a reward for the visitors' bold start to the game and nine minutes later they made it 2-0, with Deeney finishing off a sweeping move involving Sean Murray and Ikechi Anya. City manager Manuel Pellegrini sent on defenders Vincent Kompany and Pablo Zabaleta for the second half and ...

The recalled Yannick Bolasie impressed in the 1-0 win at Aston Villa and may keep his place. MATCH PREVIEW Notwithstanding their fully-merited Boxing Day win against Aston Villa, you fear for Crystal Palace at the Etihad Stadium. But, then, you fear for any side visiting Manchester City this season. Yes, Liverpool worried City and the hosts benefitted from one or two controversial decis ...
Yaya leads Messi to City calls Manchester City midfielder Yaya Toure is urging former colleague Lionel Messi to make a switch to the Etihad Stadium. Previously, Messi's Argentina team-mate Sergio Aguero has vocalised his desire to see the double World Player of the Year at City, as did compatriot Pablo Zabaleta. A move for the Barcelona playmaker would, without a doubt, command a world record £100million-plus transfer fee. However, City - who take on Barcelona in the Champions League knockout stages - are one of few clubs who could afford the fee and Messi's wage-bill. Furthermore, City's Barcelona connections are strong with Ferran Soriano and Txiki Begirstain both holding prominent roles at the Catalan club before they moved to Manchester. "If it's to come to City, I hope Messi can leave Barca," Toure told the Manchester Evening News. While striker Aguero, who has partnered Messi in the Argentina team, said: "Yes, he should come to City. Then we'll definitely play together. City should buy him." person ...

It’s an offer that is sure to receive short shrift from Liverpool who will have no intention of selling Suarez and should they feel forced into considering offers for the former Ajax man they will surely only think about selling to non-Premier League sides. Suarez has been in fabulous form this season, netting 14 goals in ten Premier League fixtures and the chance to line-up the Liverpool man alongside Sergio Aguero is no doubt incredibly tempting for boss Manuel Pellegrini it seems like it may prove a bridge too far for the big spending side. Man City spent big over the summer and brought in both Alvaro Negredo and Stevan ...
Southampton 1-1 Manchester City Pablo Osvaldo scored a first-half equaliser to earn Southampton a 1-1 draw against Manchester City. The Italy forward was involved in an post-match melee as injury-hit Southampton slipped to a third consecutive defeat against Aston Villa on Wednesday, but he returned to St Mary's Stadium and grabbed the headlines for the right reasons. An individual effort from Southampton’s big-money signing was brought the home side level after Sergio Aguero continued his purple patch in front of goal in the 10th minute to hand Manchester City an early lead. Manuel Pellegrini's side won at West Brom on Wednesday to record their second win away from the Etihad Stadium in the Barclays Premier League this season, but were unable to build on that result at St Mary’s. Midfielder Victor Wanyama suffered a hairline fracture to his leg and right-back Nathaniel Clyne damaged his pelvis in midweek, meaning Jack Cork and Calum Chambers came in as two of four changes in Pochettino's injury-ravage ...
Barcelona have distanced themselves from reports linking them with a move for Manchester City striker Sergio Aguero. The Argentinian, who joined City from Atletico Madridin 2011, has consistently been touted for a return to Spain since arriving at the Etihad Stadium. Aguero has been in stunning form so far this season, firing 17 goals in 18 matches in all competitions, and both Real Madrid and Barcelona have been tipped to bid for him next year. However Josep Bartomeu, vice-president of the Nou Camp team, insists his side have not sounded out Aguero and claims the forward is happy in Manchester. He told El Mundo Deportivo: "No, we have not had any contact with him (Aguero). I can say that it is an untruth. I do not know nothing, but I do not think Aguero wants to leave Manchester City."
I think this reporter is getting a bit carried away. Aguero has only scored one more goal than SAS! He is comparing minutes played to goals, but SAS don't take penalties. Aguero's double makes him the deadliest striker in Premier League history... but who joins him on the list of top hitmen? Sergio Aguero's nine-minute double against Tottenham made him the most potent striker in the history of the Premier League. The Manchester City hitman has been lethal in front of goal this season - leaving Wayne Rooney, Luis Suarez and Robin Van Persie in his shadow - and when the Argentine scored his second in the 6-0 rout at the Etihad Stadium, he overtook Thierry Henry's goalscoring record. Aguero's individual brilliance, and telepathic partnership with Alvaro Negredo, has made him one of the world's most valuable players and the 25-year-old will be hoping to establish himself as one of the greats at next summer's World Cup. In terms of minutes-per-goal, Aguero is now the hottest striker to grace the Premier Leagu ...
Villas-Boas struggles to explain heavy tottenham defeat Tottenham boss Andre Villas-Boas admits there is "not a lot" he can say after his side's 6-0 defeat to Manchester City on Sunday. Jesus Navas put City in front after just 14 seconds and things went from bad to worse for a lacklustre Tottenham side as the ruthless hosts ran riot at the Etihad Stadium. Sandro scored an own goal before the prolific Sergio Aguero helped himself to a brace. His striker partner Alvaro Negredo then got in on the act with a stunning goal of his own and Navas completed the rout with his second goal right at the death. This was Spurs' fourth Premier League defeat this season and Villas-Boas was baffled by the heavy defeat that. "[It was a] difficult start. Conceding after 15 seconds puts your plans in doubt, it's difficult to take," he said. "I think we had a very good reaction to the [opening] goal, that’s probably the only positive of the game we have. "Everything went bad for us, from being one of the best defences in the ...

Tottenham manager Andre Villas-Boas was embarrassed and ashamed after his side suffered their worst defeat since 1996, slumping to a 6-0 loss at Manchester City. Jesus Navas set the tone for a one-sided afternoon at the Etihad Stadium, scoring after just 13 seconds following Hugo Lloris’ awful mistake. Sandro scored an own goal, with Sergio Aguero netting either side of the interval, before Alvaro Negredo added another and Navas wrapped up a comfortable win in stoppage time as Spurs slipped to ninth in the Premier League. “To lose 6-0 is extremely embarrassing,” Villas-Boas said. “We have high expectations for the season and losing to a rival by that scoreline is always difficult. “A defeat like this tends to stick more to your career than the good things you achieve. “Our game plan, our confidence and motivation was affected after we suffered a goal in 13 seconds. “It is a bad moment. We have to be ashamed of the result.” After spending £108million during the summer, much of it admittedl ...
Sergio Aguero has now scored 30 goals in 39 PL app at the Etihad Stadium
On three previous occasions the hosts had won this fixture by one goal, and that proved to be the case again thanks to Bardsley's 21st-minute strike. Latching onto Wes Brown's clever through ball, the full-back shrugged off James Milner inside of the area before calmly slotting past the onrushing Costel Pantilimon, much to the delight of the home crowd. City came close to equalising via the in-form Sergio Aguero when he headed wide from Aleksandr Kolarov's first-time cross, but Manuel Pellegrini's side endured a majorly frustrating first-half with clear-cut chances limited. Jesus Navas was introduced for the second-half and the winger almost made an immediate impact when his goal-bound effort was blocked on the line by Ki Sun-Yeung. Aguero and substitute Edin Dzeko both tested Vito Mannone as the visitors piled on the pressure, but Sunderland held on to secure Gus Poyet's third win since taking charge. For Pellegrini's men, it was a fourth defeat in six league outings away from the Etihad Stadium this sum ...
Stamford Bridge side want Etihad Stadium ace. Chelsea are reportedly ready to challenge Bayern Munich in the pursuit of Man City striker Sergio Aguero according to TuttoMercato. The West London side are being linked with a stunning 50m (£42m) bid for the in-form Argentine as Jose Mourinho looks to address his stuttering Stamford Bridge strike-force. Mourinho's current quartet of strikers, Demba Ba, Samuel Eto'o, Fernando Torres and Andre Schurrle have scored just three Premier League goals between them this year, indeed loaned out Belgian Romelu Lukaku has outscored them by managing five in five appearances for Everton. Pep Guardiola is apparently keen on bringing 25 year old Aguero to the Allianz Arena but Mourinho may have other ideas though one wonders if Man City would consider any offers for such a pivotal player, especially one who has only recently been tied down to a long term contract. The former Atletico Madrid man has been a massive success since making his £38m move to the Etihad Stadium bac ...

A Carlos Tevez-inspired City are back at Wembley after ruthlessly casting aside Barnsley in a one-sided FA Cup quarter-final at the Etihad Stadium. The brilliant Tevez scored a hat-trick and set up goals for Aleks Kolarov and David Silva in the 5-0 win as the Blues booked their place in the semi-final in emphatic style. On this evidence, nobody will want to draw the Premier League champions - who are still yet to concede a goal in the competition so far - in tomorrow’s draw. Roberto Mancini took the opportunity to rest a number of key personnel for the visit of the Tykes. With Vincent Kompany, Jack Rodwell and Sergio Aguero still side-lined with injury, Javi Garcia, Gael Clichy, Matija Nastasic, Joe Hart and James Milner were all relegated to the bench.
BPL TOP 5 EXPENSIVE TEAMS: 1. Manchester City - £380m Manchester City spent a club record fee to complete the signing of Atletico Madrid striker Sergio Aguero in the summer of 2011 and, after an instrumental role in delivering the title in his first season with the club, the Argentine remains the most highly-valued player on the books at the Etihad Stadium. According to Transfermarkt, Aguero's present market value of £39.5 million places him at the top of Manchester City's rankings, although he is closely followed by fleet-footed Spaniard David Silva. City spent £25 million to acquire Silva from Valencia, and his value has soared since his arrival in Manchester, with the 27-year-old worth 54 percent more now than he was upon arrival almost three years ago. Manchester City have two other players valued in excess of £30 million in Yaya Toure (£31.5m) and Vincent Kompany (£31m), making Roberto Mancini's squad the most valued in the Premier League. 2. Manchester United - £370m On Friday, Sir Alex Fergu ...
Manchester - Manchester City galvanised their grip on second place in the English Premier League and trimmed Manchester United's lead back to 12 points with a 2-0 victory at home to nearest rivals Chelsea on Sunday. After Chelsea's Frank Lampard had seen a penalty saved by England colleague Joe Hart, City prevailed through a pair of fine second-half goals from man-of-the-match Yaya Toure and substitute Carlos Tevez. Although City's chances of retaining their league title remain decidedly slender, they now have a seven-point advantage over Chelsea, who could slip to fourth if Tottenham Hotspur overcome West Ham United on Monday. Both City manager Roberto Mancini and his Chelsea counterpart Rafael Benitez flooded their sides with midfielders at the Etihad Stadium, while Benitez opted to leave John Terry and Fernando Torres on thebench. City deployed Sergio Aguero as a lone striker and although he had to plough a lone furrow, it was the hosts who dominated the firsthalf. Visiting goalkeeper Petr Cech had to ...
EPL Super Sunday PREVIEW: Manchester City vs CHELSEA Pressure will be on both teams when second-placed Manchester City host Chelsea who are third in the league table at the Etihad Stadium on Sunday afternoon. Roberto Mancini's City (15-8-3) trail league leaders Manchester United by 12 points with 12 games of the season remaining, and rumours are beginning to circulate about the manager's future at the club. However, star striker Sergio Aguero is hoping that the squad will be able to take inspiration from their 4-0 win over Leeds United in the FA Cup last weekend and mount a late title challenge. "The boost of winning well against Leeds and getting the Southampton defeat out of our system was just what we needed," said Aguero. "The chances of ending this championship in the best possible fashion have only improved, but we know what we are capable of and have done for a long time. This is a team that always goes for the win in every game. "We've got a squad littered with great players fully committed to the ...

Yaya Toure opened the scoring early on after a powerful run, before Sergio Aguero bagged from the spot to double the lead inside 15 minutes. Carlos Tevez’s early second-half goal and Aguero’s cool finish compounded Leeds’ miserable afternoon, and the 2011 winners will go into the last eight as one of the big favourites. Roberto Mancini rang in the changes, with only five of the starting line-up from the 3-1 defeat at Southampton keeping their place. La Liga giants lead race for Manchester City star La Liga duo Malaga and Sevilla are interested Manchester City striker John Guidetti, according to reports from Sky Sports. The Swedish international has been linked with a loan move to a number of Premier League clubs recently, with first-team opportunities at the Etihad Stadium limited. ... But, a switch to Spain now appears to be most likely, with Malaga and Sevilla both interested in the 20-year-old. City are believed to be willing to allow Guidetti to leave on a temporary basis in a bid to gain match experience. With the likes of Sergio Aguero, Mario Balotelli, Carlos Tevez and Edin Dzeko all competing for a starting spot, the youngster has been pushed aside by manager Roberto Mancini. The player himself is keen on a stint in Spain, although it is thought that a number of Italian sides as well as Newcastle and Sunderland are monitoring the situation. His representatives are believed to be in talks with City to discuss the best option for his developmen ...

Premier League ROUND UP SATURDAY MATCHES Golden Silva keeps pressure on leaders Manchester City cut the gap to rivals United at the top of the Premier League to four points on Saturday, while Liverpool hit five as they moved level with Arsenal in the hunt for European football. Newcastle's survival hopes were derailed by Reading, who moved out of the bottom three at the expense of Wigan. Roberto Mancini will hope for a favour from Tottenham after Manchester City did their job ahead of United's trip to White Hart Lane on Sunday, beating Fulham 2-0 at the Etihad Stadium. A brace from David Silva ensured pressure was applied by the champions as they attempt to hunt down their neighbours. Mancini does not expect any big-name signings in January, but he was boosted by the return of two important squad members as Sergio Aguero and Samir Nasri took to the bench against Fulham. And the duo were treated to a goal after two minutes, as Silva pounced on Mark Schwarzer's parry after Edin Dzeko had fired at goal. Stev ...
Yet, an interesting sideshow has developed at Manchester City, with Mario Balotelli having a well-publicised bust-up with manager Roberto Mancini in training. As rumours persist that City are considering cutting their losses on the eccentric Italian, GiveMeFootball gives five reasons why keeping the 22-year-old striker at the Etihad Stadium would benefit Manchester City. 1. Undeniable talent If there's one thing we can be certain of, it's that Balotelli is a top quality footballer. He's got 20 league goals in 53 appearances for Manchester City, and bearing in mind that he's fourth-choice striker at a club which boasts the talents of Carlos Tevez, Sergio Aguero and Edin Dzeko, that is a very respectable statistic. Add to that five goals for his national team, 20 goals in the Serie A, and the controversial youngster has started to forge an impressive CV given his age. If that's not enough, then how about the masterclass he provided in the semi-final of Euro 2012, where he single-handedly destroyed tournamen ...

Sir Alex Ferguson: United are ready for City challenge Three years ago, the Blues were just a noisy irritant to the Manchester United boss. Now, with an FA Cup and Premier League collected, City have turned the volume up. And Ferguson is prepared for it. "They're screaming now," he said ahead of Sunday's derby at the Etihad Stadium. "It's great. Challenges are what we're made of. "I've been lucky that, in my time here, I've been involved with great competitions against teams like Liverpool, Arsenal, Chelsea and now City. There are no dull moments. "We don't run from challenges." There does seem something special about this particularly rivalry, though. The pain of that never-to-be-forgotten final day last season, when United were technically champions when their last game was completed at Sunderland, only to have the prize snatched away from them by Sergio Aguero with virtually the last kick of the entire campaign, was more acute for the fans because so many had to face their City counterparts on the Manc ...
LONDON (AFP) – Manchester City went top in the Premier League by crushing Aston Villa 5-0 on Saturday, but third-placed Chelsea have now gone four games without a win after losing 2-1 at West Bromwich Albion. David Silva’s scrappy 43rd-minute goal put City ahead at the Etihad Stadium, before penalties from Sergio Aguero and Carlos Tevez — awarded for handballs by Andreas Weimann and Barry Bannan — made it 3-0. Aguero beat Villa goalkeeper Brad Guzan at his near post to claim his second goal in the 67th minute and Tevez then tapped home the fifth, as City warmed up for Wednesday’s vital Champions League encounter with Real Madrid in style. The result dropped Villa into the bottom three and took champions City a point clear of former leaders Manchester United, who will return to the summit if they win at Norwich City later on Saturday. Chelsea’s early-season momentum appears to have fizzled out completely, after their defeat at coach Roberto Di Matteo’s former club left them four points off .. ...
Roberto Mancini will not face disciplinary action after confronting the referee following his side's controversial 2-2 Champions League draw with Ajax. UEFA have confirmed that the incident was not reported by either Danish referee Peter Rasmussen or their match delegate at the Etihad Stadium. Mancini came onto the field after a stormy final few minutes in which Sergio Aguero had a goal disallowed and Mario Balotelli had a penalty appeal turned down. A UEFA spokesperson said: "Nothing was reported neither by the delegate nor by the referee. No disciplinary proceedings are opened."
I shall make up my OWN question and answer it: St. Marks (West Gorton), Etihad Stadium, 1970, Sergio Aguero, Three.
Joe Hart produced a goalkeeping masterclass as Mario Balotelli's last-gasp penalty earned Manchester City a fortunate point against Borussia Dortmund. The England international produced a host of breath-taking saves at the Etihad Stadium to keep his side in their Group D contest with the German champions. Hart was only beaten in the 62nd minute when substitute Jack Rodwell's awful blind pass allowed Marco Reus to burst through and fire the Bundesliga side into the lead. City had created plenty of openings in an end-to-end first period, but were second best after the interval and only numerous stops from their No.1 prevented the game being over long before the final whistle. And with time running out, referee Pavel Kralovec handed them a lifeline when he penalised Neven Subotic when Sergio Aguero's shot struck his arm from point-blank range, with Balotelli keeping his cool to send the excellent Roman Weidenfeller the wrong way. The score could easily have been 3-3 at half-time,but was not due to the brilli ...

Manchester City 1-1 Borussia Dortmund: Ice cool Balotelli rescues precious Champions League point for Mancini’s men The Italian substitute and goalkeeper Joe Hart are the heroes for the English champions as they struggle to contain the outstanding Bundesliga holders. For Roberto Mancini, there continues to be no sign of improvement to an increasingly desperate Champions League record. The Italian cut a frustrated figure at Etihad Stadium as Manchester City needed an 89th-minute Mario Balotelli penalty to draw 1-1 against an excellent Borussia Dortmund side.Substitute Balotelli, who had only been on the pitch for eight minutes, stroked home the spot-kick with ice-cool precision after Neven Subotic had been harshly penalised for hand-balling a Sergio Aguero volley. It came after Dortmund had created a glut of excellent opportunities only to be denied by a Joe Hart masterclass in goal. The England No.1 could not prevent Marco Reus giving the visitors the lead after 60 minutes but he was equal to everything ...
Roberto Mancini and Mario Balotelli were involved in a tunnel confrontation after Laurent Koscielny had secured a point with a late equaliser for Arsenal at the Etihad Stadium yesterday. Balotelli, forced to watch last week's Champions League defeat against Real Madrid from the stands at Santiago Bernabeu after being omitted from Mancini's match-day squad, was involved for just five minutes against Arsenal, introduced as an 85th-minute replacement for Sergio Aguero.
After being absolutely spoilt for sport over the summer, the Premier League is back this weekend and fans will return to cheering on a new multi-million-pound signing rather than those who could go faster, higher, stronger in Stratford. Thanks to Euro 2012, the cricket Test series between England and South Africa, and, of course, the Olympics, the swing of Sergio Aguero's boot which so dramatically won the title for Manchester City just more than three months ago still seems like only yesterday. However, almost under the radar, much has changed in the world of the Premier League and many questions are surrounding the 2012/13 kick-off. Can City defend their title? Will Robin Van Persie make the difference for Manchester United? Has Chelsea's spending turned them into contenders? Is Brendan Rodgers the right man for Liverpool? Who will be relegated? In short, welcome back. Roberto Mancini's Manchester City begin the defence of their title by hosting Southampton at the Etihad Stadium on Sunday. The reigning ...
LONDON (AP) It took goal difference to determine the destination of the Premier League trophy, but ending a 44-year championship drought has cemented Manchester City's status as English soccer's emerging force. After enduring relegations and financial chaos while United won 12 of the last 19 English titles, the ''noisy neighbors'' derided by Alex Ferguson finally have something to shout about. And the 70-year-old Manchester United manager will have to get used to it as he puts a brave face on being denied the title for the first time by City. Ferguson insists he can rise to the task of restoring United's long-standing supremacy in English soccer and wrest the trophy from a team owned by Abu Dhabi interests. Sergio Aguero's title-winning goal in stoppage time Sunday against Queens Park Rangers sent ripples around the world, from the Etihad Stadium to the Gulf oil wells that have funded the unprecedented $1 billion rejuvenation of City the last three years. ''It was absolutely incredible,'' striker Carlos T ...

Wayne Rooney's first-half winner proved insufficient for Manchester United as Manchester City's stoppage-time double snatched the Premier League title away from them. - Dejected Ferguson congratulates City United went into injury time at Sunderland leading 1-0 and with City trailing 2-1 to 10-man QPR at the Etihad Stadium. By the time the final whistle sounded at the Stadium of Light City had levelled, but the celebrations on Wearside had barely started when Sergio Aguero saved Roberto Mancini's men at the death to clinch a first title for the Blues in 44 years. United manager Sir Alex Ferguson and his players trudged back to the dressing room knowing they had been so close at the end of a remarkable season, but it was the home fans who stayed behind to cheer their heroes on a day when victory and defeat ultimately counted for little for either club. United might have won significantly more comfortably on the day had it not been for thewoodwork and Black Cats keeper Simon Mignolet, but they could have eme ...
has been charged by the FA for his clash with Manchester City duo Sergio Aguero and Vincent Kompany at Etihad Stadium.
What a spectacular finish to the football season.. I cannot remember one with such a smashing finish. I must declare that if I was a Man City fan I doubt whether I would of still been in the Etihad Stadium when Sergio Aguero finished QPR off. I would probabley of been walking out of the car park when Edin Dzeko got the second Man City goal.

Manchester City snatches EPL crown Sergio Aguero ended Manchester City's 44-year search for a title in extraordinary fashion as two goals in stoppage-time gave Roberto Mancini's men a scarcely-believable 3-2 win over 10-man Queens Park Rangers. The title looked certain to be heading for the red side of the city for the 20th time as Wayne Rooney gave Manchester United a 1-0 win at Sunderland and City trailed 2-1 heading into the last minute. But substitute Edin Dzeko headed an equaliser with 91 minutes on the clock then Aguero fired home three minutes later to send a disbelieving Etihad Stadium into rapture. Knowing a win would almost certainly be enough to end the long wait, City went ahead through Pablo Zabaleta's 39th-minute strike before the home side were stunned by a 48th-minute equaliser from Djibril Cisse. Despite the ridiculous sending-off of former City man Joey Barton on 55 minutes for an elbow behind the play on Carlos Tevez, QPR went ahead through Jamie Mackie in the 66th minute - and looked s ...
Roberto Mancini's side seemed to be destined for second place for much of the afternoon as Queens Park Rangers produced a display of resilience to thwart their opponents. The situation was desperate as the match at the Etihad Stadium moved into injury time. QPR, down to 10 men for the final 35 minutes of the match after Joey Barton's red card, were winning 2-1 and set to become the first side this season to beat City on their own patch. More significantly, Manchester United were winning 1-0 at Sunderland thanks to Wayne Rooney's header - which meant City had to secure victory to win their first title in 44 years. With 75 seconds of the five minutes of injury time elapsed Edin Dzeko fired in to level the match and set the tone for an astonishing finale. And with less than two minutes remaining, Sergio Aguero fired past Paddy Kenny from close range to spark massive celebrations in the stadium. Dramatic twist For much of the afternoon, United looked set fair for their 13th Premier League crown. Rooney's goal ...
