Tennis | WTA Serena, Ivanovic battle into Cincinnati final 17 August 2014, 07:28 Serena Williams rallied past Denmark's Caroline Wozniacki on Saturday to reach the Western and Southern Open final in Cincinnati where she will face Ana Ivanovic, an upset winner over French Open champion Maria Sharapova. Top-seedEd Williams had to overcome a sluggish start to beat Wozniacki 2-6 6-2 6-4 while Serbian ninth seed Ivanovic eventually prevailed in a rollercoaster 6-2 5-7 7-5 win over the Russian fifth seed that lasted nearly three hours. The Cincinnati tournament is the last of the key tune-ups ahead of the August 25-September 8 US Open, the year's final Grand Slam, where Williams will defend her crown. The day's first semifinal was a rematch of the thrilling quarterfinal in Montreal earlier this month between Williams and Wozniacki that the American won in three sets. Williams looked a pale shadow of herself in the 29-minute first set as she held her serve only once and recorded twice as many unforced errors as ...

Tennis | Wimbledon Kevin Anderson writes Bouchard faces Kvitova for Wimbledon title 05 July 2014, 08:52 Eugenie Bouchard will become an overnight phenomenon and multi-million dollar superstar if she defeats Petra Kvitova in Saturday's Wimbledon final. Exactly 10 years to the day when 17-year-old Maria Sharapova blitzed Serena Williams on Centre Court, the same fate awaits the 20-year-old, the first Canadian in history to reach a Grand Slam singles final. The comparisons between Bouchard and Sharapova are impossible to avoid. Both are tall, blonde and photogenic with the composed and self-confident high-profiles slavishly courted by blue-chip suitors desperate for endorsement. But Bouchard refuses to get ahead of herself. "First and foremost I focus on the tennis. Whatever comes with it, I take in my stride. Tennis | Wimbledon Kevin Anderson writes Sharapova out, Serena in health scare 01 July 2014, 20:04 Maria Sharapova suffered more Wimbledon heartache as the French Open champion crashed to a shock 7-6 (7/4), 4-6, 6-4 defeat against Germany's Angelique Kerber in the fourth round, while Serena Williams quit her doubles match after a health scare. Sharapova famously won Wimbledon aged 17 in 2004, but she has struggled to emulate that feat for much of the last decade and this was another dispiriting experience for the Russian as the ninth seed sealed a stunning Centre Court triumph on her seventh Match Point. The world No 5 arrived at the All England Club fresh from her second Roland Garros title, but she has now failed to make it past the last 16 in seven of her last eight appearances at Wimbledon. "Today could have gone either way, and it didn't go my way," Sharapova said. "Despite the results and the fact that I've lost here and haven't had good results, I still love playing on grass." Kerber, who reached t ...

For the women's I think there could be early exits for Maria Sharapova and Serena Williams again (keep an eye on the page around the third or fourth round for those tips) and the big players for me this year are Eugenie Bouchard, Simona Halep and Petra Kvitova. Kvitova has done it already and she will be tough to beat if she can gain momentum and confidence. Halep is capable on all surfaces and she can go a long way here. Bouchard is the ace in the pack. She is top quality and avoided the faith of other young stars such as Sloane Stephens and Laura Robson by backing up her major breakthrough at the Aussie Open with another big show in Paris. She might just go a step further again this time.
Last year's Wimbledon was the most unpredictable in memory. Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal and Maria Sharapova - owners of a combined 10 titles at the All England Club - were all gone by the end of the second round. Five-time champion Serena Williams left in the fourth. Add in the record-equaling withdrawals or mid-match retirements because of health problems. And to cap it all, Andy Murray finally gave Britain the men's champion it had wanted for more than three-quarters of a century. What might 2014 have in store? Here are five things to watch at Wimbledon, where play begins Monday: 'MURRESMO': The pairing of Murray and his new coach, Amelie Mauresmo, was quickly dubbed ''Murresmo,'' and their partnership is sure to draw a lot of notice. For one thing, Murray won the grass-court Grand Slam tournament - the first British man in 77 years to do so - with Ivan Lendl in his corner a year ago. For another, it's unusual for a top male tennis player to be coached by a woman. But Murray was coached for years by his ...

Happy Birthday to Venus Williams. Venus Ebony Starr Williams (born June 17, 1980) is an American professional tennis player who is a former World No. 1 and is ranked World No. 30 in singles as of June 9, 2014. She has been ranked World No. 1 in singles by the Women's Tennis Association on three separate occasions. She became the World No. 1 for the first time on February 25, 2002, becoming the first American black woman to achieve this feat during the Open Era. She is credited as changing the women's game and ushering a new, modern era of power and athleticism on the women's professional tennis tour. She is also regarded as the best grass court player of her generation and she is widely considered as one of the all-time greats of women's tennis. Her seven Grand Slam singles titles tie her for twelfth on the all time list, and is more than any other active female player except for her younger sister Serena Williams. Her 22 overall Grand Slam titles consist of seven in singles, thirteen in women's doubles, ...
For the third straight year, Maria Sharapova will play in the French Open final. The seventh-seeded Russian again lost the first set Thursday, but again managed to turn things around, beating Eugenie Bouchard of Canada 4-6, 7-5, 6-2. Sharapova will face fourth-seeded Simona Halep of Romania in Saturday’s championship match. Halep reached her first Grand Slam final by defeating 28th-seeded Andrea Petkovic of Germany 6-2, 7-6 (4). Sharapova won eight of the last 10 games against Bouchard, and has won 19 straight three-set matches on clay the last three at Roland Garros after losing the first set. “I would love to win those matches in two sets, but I always feel like I put in the work to be ready to play whatever it takes,” Sharapova said. “If it takes three hours to win the match in three sets, I will be ready for that.” Sharapova completed a career Grand Slam by winning the French Open in 2012, but lost to Serena Williams in last year’s final. Sean's Report 2014 French Open The second Grand Slam of the year has seen the first major upset with No. 3 seed Stan Wawrinka crashing out in the first round. The Australian Open champion lost to Guillermo Garcia-Lopez 4-6, 7-5, 2-6, 0-6 and dished up 62 unforced errors. Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer easily progressed to the second round each recording straight sets wins. On the women's side Maria Sharapova continued her great form on clay with a 6-1, 6-2 thumping over compatriot Ksenia Pervak. Defending champion Serena Williams also progressed with a win over French youngster Alize Lim. Aussie fans will be pleased as Sam Stosur won her first round clash but Ash Barty and Nick Kyrgios unfortunately bowed out. :)

Last year's finalists Serena Williams and Maria Sharapova share a quarter this French Open! The last 2 Champs in one quarter!.
The draw has been set. The clay has been combed. All of the top players are in Paris. It's time for the French Open to begin. This year, the tournament feels a bit more up in the air than usual. Rafael Nadal still had the best clay season out of anyone, but it wasn't up to his lofty standards. The Spaniard only won one title, and lost in two straight quarterfinals to lower-ranked countrymen. Novak Djokovic beat him in the final of the Rome Masters last week to set up plenty of intrigue between the top two players in the world. On the women's side, Serena Williams is the favorite as always, but there are plenty of other contenders. Maria Sharapova continues her revival on clay, Simona Halep is looking to finally make a big move at a major and Ana Ivanovic has been turning the clock back to 2008, the year she won this tournament. As soon as the draws for major tournaments are released, fans look ahead to which players will be competing in quarterfinals and semifinals. However, this year's French Open will f ...

Maria Sharapova's unending misery against Serena Williams continues... Serena Williams extends her winning streak over Maria Sharapova last night to 15 matches at the 2014 Miami Masters currently holding in Miami, USA. Williams has now won 15 in a row against Sharapova and has won 16 of the 18 times they have played. Both of Sharapova’s wins came during the 2004 season — in the Wimbledon final and the WTA Championship final. Serena Williams rallied to beat Maria Sharapova for a 15th straight time and advance to the final of the Sony Open in Miami. Williams was defending an enviable run against the Russian but found herself trailing 4-1 in the first set before winning five games in a row to take the first set 6-4. Williams then pulled away from a 3-3 tie in the second set to win 6-3 and go through. Sharapova, determined to end years of misery against Williams, started strong with plenty of power but Williams recovered her poise to give back as good as she got with some huge groundstrokes. "It wasn't ea ...

Do you think Maria Sharapova will ever beat Serena Williams?
COMMENTARY: Troubling But Not Surprised. Today, I had the pleasure of watching my favorite tennis player, Serena Williams win the semi-final Sony match in Miami, Fl. This win qualified her to play in the final match Saturday at 12:00 noon. FYI. Ms. Williams is the number female tennis player in the WORLD. I capitalized world for a specific reason. The USA has the female tennis player in the world. However, today while she played Maria Sharapova, a tennis player from Russia, there were a few Americans cheering for Ms. Sharapova. There is no other country in the world that would display this kind of disloyalty to their fellow citizen, no matter what his/her color. Does this surprise me? No, it does not. A person playing their money can cheer for whomever they please. But, in my opinion, it does not say much for Americans. Closing: Ms. Serena Williams is a world class athlete that has built a fortune - beginning with nothing but determination. If this is not the true American way? What else could it be? Ple ...

Great semifinal action tomorrow as the Sony Open goes into the homestretch. Just watched Li Na win against Wozniacki to come through to the semis. Li Na, playing a little more aggressive and effectively coming to the net more than usual, set up a rematch of this year's Australian Open final against Cibulkova. The other interesting semi is Serena Williams and Maria Sharapova. Serena, being the favorite, goes into the match with 14 straight wins over Maria. Seems like all the top players are playing stronger round-to-round and finding their form at the right time.
A rematch of the 2014 Australian Open is set as Aussie Champion Li Na has defeated Caroline Wozniacki 7-5, 7-5 in Quarterfinal action at the Sony Open Tennis Tournament. She will face Aussuie Finalist Dominika Cibulkova in the bottom Semi-Final. World WTA # 1 Serena Williams and Maria Sharapova face each other in the top Semi-Final. Coming up next is ATP World Tour Quarterfinal action between Roger Federer and Kei Nishikori. The winner of that match will face the 2014 BNP Paribas Open Indian Wells Tennis Garden Champion Novak Djokovic.
MIAMI (Reuters) - Defending champion Serena Williams closed in on a seventh Sony Open title with a 6-2 6-2 quarter-final demolition of German Angelique Kerber on Tuesday, a win that came as the Crandon Park tennis facility was locked down due to a bomb scare. Williams' win sets up a semi-final rematch of last year's final against Maria Sharapova, a five-time runner-up on the Miami hardcourts, who advanced with an equally impressive 7-5 6-1 win over eighth-seeded Czech Petra Kvitova. While Williams was shutting down fifth seed Kerber, Miami Dade police were locking down the sprawling tennis complex after a suspicious package was found at the main entrance. Australian Open 2014 Number 1 Serena Williams was the hardcore favorite but that didn't happened due to back injury where she lost in the fourth round. It gets better I believe if my girl Serena goes out earl all the top ladies should go out. What do you know the next round number 3 Maria Sharapova goes out. In the Quarter Finals defending champ world number 2 Victoria Azerenka goes out. Then in the Semifinals world number 5 goes out. That left world number 4 Li Na and world number 20 in the final which Li Na won finally her first title. THE BEST NEWS IS THAT Serena WilliamS IS STILL NUMBER 1 IN THE WORLD. I LOVE YOU Serena WilliamS.

Li, Cibulkov clash in women’s final China’s Li Na will seek her second major title on Saturday when she faces a first-time Grand Slam finalist, 20th-seeded Dominika Cibulkova, in the Australia Open final. According to SI.com, the path looks paved for the No.4 seed, 31, to finally win the title in Melbourne, after losing the final in 2011 and 2013. She nearly lost in the third round when No. 26 Lucie Safarova sent potential winner a Match Point “five centimeters” long. But a slew of upsets made her draw much easier; not only did Li’s projected semifinal opponent, No. 1 seed Serena Williams, lose in the fourth round, but other potentially tricky opponents also went down, including No. 6 Petra Kvitova, No. 9 Angelique Kerber, No. 14 Ana Ivanovic and No. 15 Sabine Lisicki. In fact, the 24th-ranked Cibulkova will be Li’s first top-25 opponent this tournament. That’s a far cry from having to play Kim Clijsters in the 2011 final or having to beat Maria Sharapova and then face Victoria Azarenka i .. ...
Tennis - Indian tennis ace Mahesh Bhupathi has announced that his international tennis league will kick off in November this year, will feature 5 cities and star a host of big names. Bhupathi also said that there will be a player auction in March. The cities that will own the franchises are Mumbai, Bangkok, Kuala Lumpur and Singapore — and a yet to be determined city in the Mid East. Rafael Nadal, Novak Djokovic, David Ferrer, Andy Murray, Serena Williams, Maria Sharapova, Victoria Azarenka, Li Na, Caroline Wozniacki and Sam Stosur are some of the names who have expressed interest in the league. Speaking to The Economic Times, Bhupathi commented, "It's five sets, men's singles, men's doubles, women's singles, mixed doubles, legends singles. No particular order. The home team gets to pick the order on the night of the match. One set, no-ad scoring, tiebreaker at 5-All. The winning team is the one to win the most number of games at the end of the day, not the number of sets." "Owners have the freedom to c ...
It’s refreshing to watch tennis greats Ana Ivanovich and Kim Clijsters talk to each other on CNN. No, this has nothing to do with Ana’s poise and symmetry, nor with Kim’s good natured traits as a playful doting mother. This is about accidental elevation of media interview to art form. Gone must be the typical Q & A format under the guidance of professional reporters. Usually, the typical reporters are unable to fathom the innermost recesses of the heart and mind of the interviewee, their questions merely revolving around run-of-the-mill journalistic templates. Hopefully, the mass media should run similar sessions between Serena Williams and Maria Sharapova who of late figured in muckraking, or between genteel Andre Agassi and Pete Sampras, or between Agassi and wife Stefi Graf. This should provide better dimension to media interviews, elevating the art form to new heights, as the subjects precisely know what to talk about, what to ask, and what not to ask.
Who was named Women's Tennis Association (WTA) Player of the Year for the fifth time in November 2013? 1) Victoria Azarenka (Belarus) 2) Sara Errani (Italy) 3) Maria Sharapova (Russia) 4) Serena Williams (USA) 5) Marion Bartoli (France)
MELBOURNE, Australia (AP) -- Even in a Grand Slam as unpredictable as this year's Australian Open, the names in the women's semifinals may still prompt head-scratching among casual followers of tennis. With the three biggest stars of the women's game falling one by one - top-seeded Serena Williams, followed by Maria Sharapova and two-time Australian Open champion Victoria Azarenka - the door has opened for a first-time winner at Melbourne Park. Only fourth-seeded Li Na has won a Grand Slam before - the 2011 French Open. Fifth-seeded Agnieszka Radwanska of Poland was the 2012 Wimbledon finalist, but had never been beyond the quarters in Melbourne until she chipped, lobbed and sliced Azarenka off the court in a remarkable display of shot-making on Wednesday. Dominika Cibulkova, a diminutive Slovakian who dispatched Sharapova in the fourth round, has made just one Grand Slam semifinal before, while 19-year-old Eugenie Bouchard is a only playing her fourth major - she didn't even make it out of qualifying at ...

Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal and Victoria Azarenka advance Roger Federer produced a magnificent display to beat Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in straight sets at the Australian Open. The 17-time Grand Slam champion beat the Frenchman 6-3 7-5 6-4 to set up a quarter-final with Andy Murray. Rafael Nadal overcame a nasty blister and being called for time violations to beat Japan's 16th seed Kei Nishikori 7-6 (7-3) 7-5 7-6 (7-3). Victoria Azarenka remains on course for a third straight Australian Open title after she beat Sloane Stephens 6-3 6-2. The Belarusian's title hopes were boosted by third seed Maria Sharapova's surprise defeat by Dominika Cibulkova, 24 hours after Serena Williams was knocked out. Jelena Jankovic, the eighth seed, is also out after losing to Simona Halep.

MELBOURNE, Australia - While the past few years on tour may have been dominated by Serena Williams, the opening stanza on each occasion has undoubtedly belonged to Victoria Azarenka. In both 2012 and 2013, as other leading names floundered, it was Azarenka that reigned supreme claiming back-to-back Australian Open crowns. Her quest for title number three begins next week, and she has been handed no favors by the draw. Azarenka, seeded No.2 this time around, meets Johanna Larsson in the first round, and should she safely clear this and her other opening hurdles, could be faced with her semifinal victim from 12 months ago, Sloane Stephens, in the last 16. Long-term rivals Agnieszka Radwanska and Maria Sharapova potentially lurk in the quarter and semifinals, respectively, although neither will be looking too far ahead either. Sharapova is involved in one of the first round's more colorful encounters, taking on Bethanie Mattek-Sands, who arrives in good form, having recently upset Radwanska in Sydney. On the ...
Victoria Azarenka has a tougher quarter than Maria Sharapova does, as it includes 2012 Wimbledon Finalist Agnieszka Radwanska, Sloane Stephens (who eliminated Serena Williams from the Australian Open last year), newly engaged former World # 1 Caroline Wozniacki with a newly signed Babolat contract and Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova, one of the young stars currently being coached by former 3-time Australian Open Champion Martina Hingis. Still, given the draw, expect to see Vika return to the Final for a third year running.

Sharapova, Serena mean business in Brisbane After pulling out of the Brisbane International with injuries in recent seasons, Maria Sharapova is aiming to use the season-opening tournament this time as a springboard for her comeback and to see how her new support crew works in competition. Sharapova has only played one match since an early exit at Wimbledon due to a right shoulder injury and has spent months working with her new coach Sven Groeneveld reports AP. She arrived in Australia to prepare for the first major of the season with her boyfriend and fellow professional Grigor Dimitrov, who returns after losing the final here to Andy Murray last season. Serena Williams won the last Brisbane title and is back to defend it, hoping she hasn’t lost any of the momentum from a stunning 2013 season when she won 11 titles including the French and US. Some things really puzzle me several tennis players win multiple Grand Slams and get no recognition yet just because Andy Murray wins Wimbledon he is worthy of a knighthood I think its totally pathetic, Virginia Wade won the Wimbledon title in 1977 and she was never made a Dame so what is the difference. Serena Williams & Venus Williams have won 5 Wimbledon titles, Rafael Nadal has won 2 Wimbledon titles, Roger Federer has won 7 Wimbledon titles, Maria Sharapova has won 1 Wimbledon title and do they get any recognition just for winning Wimbledon no they do not. If anyone should be knighted it should be soldiers in the army who do a far more important job fighting for their country and risk their lives on a daily basis. Andy Murray stands on a tennis court hitting a ball from one side to the other and gets paid millions just for doing that its totally out of order. Serena Williams v Maria Sharapova in the Wimbledon finals...oh wait, that was some other time. Sabine Lisicki v Marion Bartoli...24th ranked n 15th...That's why they play the game!
After beating the favourite Serena Williams, earlier in the week, Germany's Sabine Lisicki has reached her 1st ever Wimbledon final. Germany's Sabine Lisicki took on Poland's Agnieszka Rdwanska for a place in the Women's final at the Wimbledon tennis Championships. Lisicki's opponent Radwanska came on the court with both thighs heavily strapped to protect muscles which had been working hard in her previous matches. The match went to 3, highly competitive sets with Lisicki taking the 1st 6-3 before Radwanska came back to win the 2nd 6-2. Then, in the 3rd set, Lisicki broke her opponent's serve to go up 8-7 before serving out for victory at 9-7. At Wimbledon in 2011, Lisicki received a wildcard to enter the tournament advancing to the semi finals of a Grand Slam tournament for the 1st time. She beat 3rd seed and recent French Open champion Li Na from China in the 2nd round before eliminated by Russia's Maria Sharapova.
Tennis - Wimbledon Order of play: Tuesday July 2 The order of play for day eight at Wimbledon, featuring all four ladies' quarter-finals. Eight women from eight different countries will walk through the gates of the All England Club on Tuesday harbouring genuine title hopes following a Wimbledon wipeout of the headline attractions. Czech eighth seed Petra Kvitova, Wimbledon champion in 2011, and China's Li Na, French Open winner in the same year, are the only two who know how it feels to win a Grand Slam. After defeat for Maria Sharapova and Victoria Azarenka's injury-enforced withdrawal, Serena Williams was expected to stroll to a sixth Wimbledon title but her fourth-round defeat by German Sabine Lisicki on Monday left the draw wide open. Kvitova takes on 20th seed Kirsten Flipkens of Belgium, a quarter-final debutant at this level, while Li faces fourth- seeded Pole Agnieszka Radwanska who was runner-up here last year. "I think it doesn't mean anything," Radwanska said, referring to her role as the high ...

Nadal puts the gentleman in gentlemen's singles LONDON (Reuters) - For Rafael Nadal dignity in defeat is a deeply held belief and, along with his arch rivals, the Spaniard has put the gentleman back into the gentlemen's singles at Wimbledon. Compare that with the catfight that broke out between Serena Williams and Maria Sharapova in the lead-up to the world's most famous tennis tournament. Nadal, who tumbled out of the championships in a straight sets defeat by Belgian journeyman Steve Darcis on the opening day, declined to blame his wounded knee despite persistent questioning at the post-match news conference. He doesn't do excuses. The Spaniard, like Roger Federer, Andy Murray and Novak Djokovic, is a great believer in mutual respect. The leading quartet on the men's circuit do not indulge in slanging matches. That prompted Latvian player Ernests Gulbis to complain in an interview with French newspaper L'Equipe last month that: "Tennis today badly lacks characters... all four of them are boring players. ...
Last Monday, the Wimbledon started at the fabled All England Lawn Tennis Club in London, England. This is the 3rd Grand Slam event for both the ATP/WTA and will run until July 7. For Wednesday, the second round action begins at the Centre Court with featured matches on both the men's and single's event. Crowd darling and third seed Maria Sharapova will also play on Wednesday and face Portugal's Michelle Larcher De Brito. The sportsbook handicappers have installed Novak Djokovic and Serena Williams as the favorites to win the Wimbledon title in their respective events.
