CROOZEFM 2015: Hosts Equatorial Guinea and Claude Le Roy's Congo Brazzaville defied the odds to become the first teams to qualify for the quarter-finals of the Africa Cup of Nations on Sunday. The duo were considered the outsiders in Group A when the competition began, but Congo advanced in first place after beating Burkina Faso 2-1 while Equatorial Guinea sunk Gabon 2-0 amid emotional scenes in Bata. After drawing their first two matches at the tournament, the Nzalang Nacional had to beat Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang's Gabon to go through and did so to match their achievement of reaching the last eight as co-hosts in 2012. While Gabon go home, Equatorial Guinea advance to a quarter-final against the runners-up from Group B. A wide open Group B concludes today, when Tunisia need only a draw with DR Congo in Bata to advance, while Zambia, the 2012 champions, must beat Cape Verde to keep alive their hopes of going through. US Open: Djokovic, Murray, Serena sail on Novak Djokovic and Andy Murray stayed on course for a mouth-watering US Open quarter-final showdown as five-time women’s champion Serena Williams stood alone as America’s last singles title hope, AFP reports. But as the heavyweights of the sport eased into the fourth round, the women’s draw was blown open again when Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitova became the fifth top 10 seed to exit in the first week. Kvitova’s misery was shared by American tennis after John Isner and Sam Querrey were both knocked out in the third round leaving the hosts still without a men’s Grand Slam champion since Andy Roddick triumphed in New York in 2003. Djokovic, the 2011 champion, brushed aside Querrey for the eighth time in nine meetings, with a 6-3, 6-2, 6-2 win taking the world number one into the fourth round at a major for the 22nd consecutive time. “Sam is big server, very powerful. Tennis | Wimbledon Kevin Anderson writes Bouchard faces Kvitova for Wimbledon title 05 July 2014, 08:52 Eugenie Bouchard will become an overnight phenomenon and multi-million dollar superstar if she defeats Petra Kvitova in Saturday's Wimbledon final. Exactly 10 years to the day when 17-year-old Maria Sharapova blitzed Serena Williams on Centre Court, the same fate awaits the 20-year-old, the first Canadian in history to reach a Grand Slam singles final. The comparisons between Bouchard and Sharapova are impossible to avoid. Both are tall, blonde and photogenic with the composed and self-confident high-profiles slavishly courted by blue-chip suitors desperate for endorsement. But Bouchard refuses to get ahead of herself. "First and foremost I focus on the tennis. Whatever comes with it, I take in my stride. I know it's part of the job and I appreciate everything that comes with it," said the Montreal native who will pocket more than $3 million if she triumphs on Sunday. Last year's Wimbledon was the most unpredictable in memory. Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal and Maria Sharapova - owners of a combined 10 titles at the All England Club - were all gone by the end of the second round. Five-time champion Serena Williams left in the fourth. Add in the record-equaling withdrawals or mid-match retirements because of health problems. And to cap it all, Andy Murray finally gave Britain the men's champion it had wanted for more than three-quarters of a century. What might 2014 have in store? Here are five things to watch at Wimbledon, where play begins Monday: 'MURRESMO': The pairing of Murray and his new coach, Amelie Mauresmo, was quickly dubbed ''Murresmo,'' and their partnership is sure to draw a lot of notice. For one thing, Murray won the grass-court Grand Slam tournament - the first British man in 77 years to do so - with Ivan Lendl in his corner a year ago. For another, it's unusual for a top male tennis player to be coached by a woman. But Murray was coached for years by his ...

For the third straight year, Maria Sharapova will play in the French Open final. The seventh-seeded Russian again lost the first set Thursday, but again managed to turn things around, beating Eugenie Bouchard of Canada 4-6, 7-5, 6-2. Sharapova will face fourth-seeded Simona Halep of Romania in Saturday’s championship match. Halep reached her first Grand Slam final by defeating 28th-seeded Andrea Petkovic of Germany 6-2, 7-6 (4). Sharapova won eight of the last 10 games against Bouchard, and has won 19 straight three-set matches on clay the last three at Roland Garros after losing the first set. “I would love to win those matches in two sets, but I always feel like I put in the work to be ready to play whatever it takes,” Sharapova said. “If it takes three hours to win the match in three sets, I will be ready for that.” Sharapova completed a career Grand Slam by winning the French Open in 2012, but lost to Serena Williams in last year’s final. Champions Williams and Nadal face tough opposition at Roland Garros 2014 The world's top ranked tennis players compete at Roland Garros, also known as the French Open. This year, reigning champions Serena Williams and Rafael Nadal face tough opposition from the likes of the Chinese Li Na and Swiss Stanislas Wawrinka who both respectively won the Grand Slam Australian Open in January. Roland Garros is the second of the four Grand Slam tournaments on the annual tennis calendar and the premier clay court tennis tournament in the world.
SERENA, Venus Williams HAVE BEEN OUTCLASS FROM THE French Open: Serena and Venus Williams could have met in the third round at Roland Garros, but, surprisingly, neither made it out of round two on Wednesday. After Venus Williams was eliminated by Slovakia's Anna Schmiedlova in three sets on Chatrier Court to start the second round, top-seeded Serena Williams was stunned by Spain's Garbine Muguruza. Schmiedlova, in her second French Open and fifth Grand Slam event, pulled off a 2-6, 6-3, 6-4 victory over Venus for her first-ever win against a top-30 opponent. The shocker then came about an hour later on Court Lenglen, as Muguruza took full advantage of an abnormally sloppy Serena in a 6-2, 6-2 triumph. Muguruza's best result in five previous Grand Slam events was a fourth-round loss to Agnieszka Radwanska at the Australian Open earlier this year. It wasn't Serena's earliest exit at Roland Garros. She was bounced in the first round two years ago by Frenchwoman Virginie Razzano, then rebounded by completely ...

Defending champion Serena Williams also progressed with a win over French youngster Alize Lim. Aussie fans will be pleased as Sam Stosur won her first round clash but Ash Barty and Nick Kyrgios unfortunately bowed out. :)

At the French Open, Serena Williams hopes to tie the record for Grand Slam titles.
The French Open always presents a unique test. The second major of the season is the only one contested on clay, which requires a different skill set. It also starts a very busy stretch that continues through Wimbledon and the U.S. Open. Players are focused on setting a positive tone they can build from in the months ahead. Rafael Nadal and Serena Williams were the stars who accomplished that goal last year with triumphs at Roland Garros. It was Nadal's eighth French championship and Williams' second. The tennis tours arrived in the capital of Spain with doubts and questions. Two weeks later, they leave the capital of Italy with a sense of order that seems both traditional and renewed. Serena Williams, Novak Djokovic, and Rafael Nadal started the clay swing slowly, but they’ll head to its final event, in the capital of France, in their familiar positions as Grand Slam favorites. These days, nothing stays unsure for long in tennis. Here’s a review of Madrid and Rome, in the form of report cards. The grade reflects a player's performance at both tournaments. As always, I can't write about everyone. If you see anyone missing, please supply your own assessment. * Serena Williams Even as Serena announced that she was pulling out of her Madrid quarterfinal with a thigh injury, she said she was already “recovering fast.” She wasn’t kidding. The world No. 1 got down to business in Rome and wiped away any doubts that we, or at least I, might have had about her desire or fitness for a French Open repea ...

Tennis MELBOURNE — China’s Li Na stormed to her second Grand Slam title on Saturday, battling past underdog Dominika Cibulkova to win the Australian Open and give another huge boost to Asian tennis. The 31-year-old fourth seed’s 7-6 (7/3), 6-0 win crowned her the champion on her third attempt after losing the 2011 and 2013 finals, adding to the French Open title she won three years ago. In doing so, she became the oldest winner of the women’s title, surpassing Margaret Court who was 30 when she became champion in 1973. The Chinese star also joins an exclusive list of just seven other players to win a Grand Slam at 30-plus, with her name now in the history books alongside greats such as Martina Navratilova, Billie Jean King, Chris Evert and Serena Williams. “I finally got here,” she said after Evert awarded her the trophy, as she praised her husband Jiang Shan and coach Carlos Rodriguez. “Thanks Carlos. He always believed that I could do well.” The win pushes her one place higher in the wor ...
Li, Cibulkov clash in women’s final China’s Li Na will seek her second major title on Saturday when she faces a first-time Grand Slam finalist, 20th-seeded Dominika Cibulkova, in the Australia Open final. According to SI.com, the path looks paved for the No.4 seed, 31, to finally win the title in Melbourne, after losing the final in 2011 and 2013. She nearly lost in the third round when No. 26 Lucie Safarova sent potential winner a match point “five centimeters” long. But a slew of upsets made her draw much easier; not only did Li’s projected semifinal opponent, No. 1 seed Serena Williams, lose in the fourth round, but other potentially tricky opponents also went down, including No. 6 Petra Kvitova, No. 9 Angelique Kerber, No. 14 Ana Ivanovic and No. 15 Sabine Lisicki. In fact, the 24th-ranked Cibulkova will be Li’s first top-25 opponent this tournament. That’s a far cry from having to play Kim Clijsters in the 2011 final or having to beat Maria Sharapova and then face Victoria Azarenka i .. ...
MELBOURNE, Australia (AP) -- Even in a Grand Slam as unpredictable as this year's Australian Open, the names in the women's semifinals may still prompt head-scratching among casual followers of tennis. With the three biggest stars of the women's game falling one by one - top-seeded Serena Williams, followed by Maria Sharapova and two-time Australian Open champion Victoria Azarenka - the door has opened for a first-time winner at Melbourne Park. Only fourth-seeded Li Na has won a Grand Slam before - the 2011 French Open. Fifth-seeded Agnieszka Radwanska of Poland was the 2012 Wimbledon finalist, but had never been beyond the quarters in Melbourne until she chipped, lobbed and sliced Azarenka off the court in a remarkable display of shot-making on Wednesday. Dominika Cibulkova, a diminutive Slovakian who dispatched Sharapova in the fourth round, has made just one Grand Slam semifinal before, while 19-year-old Eugenie Bouchard is a only playing her fourth major - she didn't even make it out of qualifying at ...

Serena Williams cruises into second round at Aussie Open, seeks 18th grand slam
It's nauseating listening to Chris Evert, a former number one player herself, subtly but relentlessly disrespecting Serena Williams. Instead of explaining to the audience what makes Serena one of the all-time greats, as Steffi Graf, and fellow ESPN commentators Cliff Drysdale and Pam Shriver have done, Serena: 1. "Used to make a ton of unforced errors." 2. "Is 'intimidating' "(but not a brilliant shotmaker, with one of the best returns of serve, ever). 3. "Was not always fit, like she is now." 4. "Doesn't come to the net enough.", but enough to win a bucketful of Grand Slam singles titles. Meanwhile her (white) Australian opponent has: "So much potential." I can go on and on, but at least she's not as bad as Mary Carillo. Okay, now the taped match is over, and this harpy can go back to her nest.

China Open: Serena struggles, Djokovic and Nadal sail through 01 Oct 2013 , Beijing, October 01, 2013 Top seed Serena Williams stumbled her way into the third round of the China Open on Tuesday while men's favourites Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal powered through their opening matches. The world number one Williams at times appeared agitated during her 6-4, 7-5 victory over Italian Francesca Schiavone, shouting at herself over lost points. The American only showed rare moments of her trademark power-play, gaining the upper hand in the first set via a mistake from her opponent, who double-faulted on set point. The top seed Williams was forced to become more aggressive in the second set after her serve was broken in the first game by Schiavone, Italy's first Grand Slam winner, at Roland Garros in 2010, and the current world number 50. As the competition intensified both players' tempers threatened to boil over, with Williams ranting and Schiavone smashing balls into the barriers at the side of the court in ...

Some things really puzzle me several tennis players win multiple Grand Slams and get no recognition yet just because Andy Murray wins Wimbledon he is worthy of a knighthood I think its totally pathetic, Virginia Wade won the Wimbledon title in 1977 and she was never made a Dame so what is the difference. Serena Williams & Venus Williams have won 5 Wimbledon titles, Rafael Nadal has won 2 Wimbledon titles, Roger Federer has won 7 Wimbledon titles, Maria Sharapova has won 1 Wimbledon title and do they get any recognition just for winning Wimbledon no they do not. If anyone should be knighted it should be soldiers in the army who do a far more important job fighting for their country and risk their lives on a daily basis. Andy Murray stands on a tennis court hitting a ball from one side to the other and gets paid millions just for doing that its totally out of order. Serena Williams has won 16 Grand Slams in Singles, 13 Grand Slams in Doubles, 2 Grand Slams in Mixed Doubles and 4 Olympic Gold Medals (1 in Si ...

After beating the favourite Serena Williams, earlier in the week, Germany's Sabine Lisicki has reached her 1st ever Wimbledon final. Germany's Sabine Lisicki took on Poland's Agnieszka Rdwanska for a place in the Women's final at the Wimbledon tennis Championships. Lisicki's opponent Radwanska came on the court with both thighs heavily strapped to protect muscles which had been working hard in her previous matches. The match went to 3, highly competitive sets with Lisicki taking the 1st 6-3 before Radwanska came back to win the 2nd 6-2. Then, in the 3rd set, Lisicki broke her opponent's serve to go up 8-7 before serving out for victory at 9-7. At Wimbledon in 2011, Lisicki received a wildcard to enter the tournament advancing to the semi finals of a Grand Slam tournament for the 1st time. She beat 3rd seed and recent French Open champion Li Na from China in the 2nd round before eliminated by Russia's Maria Sharapova.
Tennis - Wimbledon Order of play: Tuesday July 2 The order of play for day eight at Wimbledon, featuring all four ladies' quarter-finals. Eight women from eight different countries will walk through the gates of the All England Club on Tuesday harbouring genuine title hopes following a Wimbledon wipeout of the headline attractions. Czech eighth seed Petra Kvitova, Wimbledon champion in 2011, and China's Li Na, French Open winner in the same year, are the only two who know how it feels to win a Grand Slam. After defeat for Maria Sharapova and Victoria Azarenka's injury-enforced withdrawal, Serena Williams was expected to stroll to a sixth Wimbledon title but her fourth-round defeat by German Sabine Lisicki on Monday left the draw wide open. Kvitova takes on 20th seed Kirsten Flipkens of Belgium, a quarter-final debutant at this level, while Li faces fourth- seeded Pole Agnieszka Radwanska who was runner-up here last year. Nadal puts the gentleman in gentlemen's singles LONDON (Reuters) - For Rafael Nadal dignity in defeat is a deeply held belief and, along with his arch rivals, the Spaniard has put the gentleman back into the gentlemen's singles at Wimbledon. Compare that with the catfight that broke out between Serena Williams and Maria Sharapova in the lead-up to the world's most famous tennis tournament. Nadal, who tumbled out of the championships in a straight sets defeat by Belgian journeyman Steve Darcis on the opening day, declined to blame his wounded knee despite persistent questioning at the post-match news conference. He doesn't do excuses. The Spaniard, like Roger Federer, Andy Murray and Novak Djokovic, is a great believer in mutual respect. The leading quartet on the men's circuit do not indulge in slanging matches. That prompted Latvian player Ernests Gulbis to complain in an interview with French newspaper L'Equipe last month that: "Tennis today badly lacks characters... all four of them are boring players. ...

Serena Williams began the defence of her Wimbledon title with a comfortable 6-1 6-3 victory over Luxembourg's Mandy Minella on Tuesday to stretch her unbeaten run to 32 matches. The world number one, playing her first match since winning the French Open, scorched through the first set in 19 minutes, but was given a brief fright at the start of the second when she lost her serve to go 2-0 down. The 16-times Grand Slam winner swiftly regained control, however, breaking in the very next game, before romping away with the match.
