Common Core brought to by the democrats and the federal department of education. Expanded in 1977 by The Peanut Jimmy Carter. To the Common Core Curriculum – NUTS! – From the American People Written on Saturday, March 15, 2014 by Geoffrey G. Fisher Common-Core He just couldn’t keep his hands out of this pie – Common Core was doomed from the start for so many reasons, then President Obama handed a presidential anvil to the National Governors’ Association rather than a needed parachute. Now the national educational establishment including Secretary Arne Duncan is heading for the floor of the proverbial canyon just like Wile E. Coyote – meep, meep. The supporters of the Common Core State Standards Initiative seem truly amazed by the blow-back they are receiving from parents, teachers, free-thinking liberals, conservatives and even libertarians who see their worst fears materializing with the sharing of data bases. One troubling new area of regulation: rules for discipline at your children’s schools, so that teachers can no longer kick students who misbehave out of the classroom. They’re relaxing the protocols for punishing even violent kids, compounding fears about classroom safety in a post-Newtown world. New school-discipline guidelines issued last month by Education Secretary Arne Duncan are based on a “framework” recently formulated by the New York-based Dignity in Schools Campaign. Following Dignity’s recommendations, the administration is pressuring schools to keep disruptive minority students in the classroom. The new federal guidelines call for a moratorium on suspensions, now demonized as “racist” because they have a “disparate impact” on black students. They also discourage school authorities from bringing police onto campuses even in some violent cases. “Racial discrimination in school discipline is a real problem today,” Duncan claimed in announcing the new policy. But chances are ...

So CPS is taking the First Lady's Let's Move campaign to heart it seems. Their going to have kids walking before this day is out. Got an email 15 minutes before the end of the school day informing me that because of the anniversary event at McCormick Place the school busing is severely disrupted and several of the routes won't even make it to our school today as a result. Children are calling home to determine if they should double up on other buses that don't serve their route, (thus being dropped off far later than usual), wait at the school until a parent can pick them up, or take the CTA home. Nice to know that all of the officials at the event today like Secretary Arne Duncan, Mayor Rahm Emanuel and others took the time to plan this out so that all Chicago Public Schools children would get home safely after school. Well, at least they got a great photo op, right?
The Common Core State (sic) Standards are the result of hundreds of millions of dollars disbursed in carefully distributed grants from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation accompanied by the threat from U. S. Secretary Arne Duncan to withhold federal funds if individual states did not sign on the dotted line. I looked at two months worth of press citations praising the CCSS –August and September, 2012–and then looked up the Gates money given to those who come to praise CCSS. The list ranges from the American Federation of Teachers ($1,000,000) to the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction ($823,637), from the neo-liberal Center for American Progress ($2,998,809) to the neo-conservative Thomas B. Fordham Institute ($5,711,462). The PTA got money ($2,005,000); so did the National Writing Project ($2,645,593). And so on and so on. He who pays the piper calls the tune, and with money in their pockets, many are eager to sing the Common Core song and eat the funeral meats.

Special Message from ED Secretary Arne Duncan: Resources for Schools to Prepare for and Recover from Crisis All of us who work in education have broken hearts and are haunted by the tragedy visited on the educators, students, and families of the Newtown Public School District and Sandy Hook Elementary School. Whenever a school experiences violence and the lives of children and adults are lost, we struggle to find words to express our emotions and explain how this could have happened. Schools are among the safest places for children and adolescents in our country, and, in fact, crime in schools has been trending downward for more than a decade. Nationwide statistics, however, provide little solace when 20 first-graders and six adults are senselessly gunned down in a small town’s elementary school. Accounts from Sandy Hook indicate that the school’s heroic principal and her staff had safety measures in place and had practiced their emergency procedures. As a result, children’s lives were saved and an ...

Senior U.S. Department of Education staff members are traveling across the country to engage communities in conversation about school reform (P-12), college affordability and completion, and the link between education and jobs. Much of the conversation in other states has centered on topics such as teacher quality, with a focus on teacher preparation, professional development and evaluation. The Arizona leg of the tour will take place this month. Dysart Unified School District was selected to host one of the activities planned by the Department of Education staff. Dysart organized a stakeholder roundtable event in which government, civic, and business leaders will be invited to join educators, parents, and students to add their voices to the national conversation. But I’m optimistic. Along with millions of frustrated students, educators, and parents, I’m committed to a radical reinvention of the system from scratch." -Nikhil Goyal

Mashable: The federal government, book publishers and the technology industry are considering a large-scale effort to push tablets into public schools, raising questions about hidden costs to implement such a program. Apple, Intel and McGraw Hill representatives and other technology and publishing heavy hitters are working with Federal Communications Commission chairman Julius Genachowski and Education Secretary Arne Duncan to figure out effective ways to introduce digital technology into the emerging classroom.
Long Live Paper LAST week, Education Secretary Arne Duncan declared a war on paper textbooks. “Over the next few years, ” he said in a speech at the National Press Club, “ textbooks should be obsolete.” In their place would come a variety of digital-learning technologies, like e-readers and multimedia Web sites. Such technologies certainly have their place. But Secretary Duncan is threatening to light a bonfire to a tried-and-true technology — good old paper — that has been the foundation for one of the great educational systems on the planet. And while e-readers and multimedia may seem appealing, the idea of replacing an effective learning platform with a widely hyped but still unproven one is extremely dangerous. A renowned expert on reading, Maryanne Wolf, has recently begun studying the effects of digital reading on learning, and so far the results are mixed. She worries that Internet reading, in particular, could be such a source of distractions for the student that they may cancel out mo ...

Last but not least: Romney: Well, the primary responsibility for education is -- is, of course, at the state and local level. But the federal government also can play a very important role. And I -- and I agree with Secretary Arne Duncan, he's -- some ideas he's put forward on Race to the Top, not all of them, but some of them I agree with and -- and congratulate him for pursuing that. The federal government can get local and -- and state schools to do a better job. But of course, you just got finished saying that the federal government can't help insurance do a better job, and can't help the private sector do a better job.
“The steady movement to a more fair and just society plays out every day in the classrooms, colleges and universities all across America–and I believe that the only way to achieve equity in society is to achieve equity in the classroom.”—Secretary Arne Duncan, July 14, 2010

I don't know who to vote for. If Obama wins, his education secretary, Arne Duncan will see it as a mandate to continue flushing public education down the toilet. If Romney wins, I expect public education to continue getting flushed down the toilet. Hmmm, which education toilet flusher do I prefer?
The president was addressing a group of 120 current and former NBA stars and other wealthy supporters attending the $20,000 per plate “Obama Classic” fundraiser in New York City. Spotted in the crowd were co-host Michael Jordan and his fiancee, Yvette Prieto, Bill Bradley, Patrick Ewing, Education Secretary Arne Duncan and Walt “Clyde” Frazier. “This is my dream team,” Obama told the group at the top of his remarks. “IT'S VERY RARE I COME TO AN EVENT WHERE I'M LIKE THE FIFTH OR SIXTH MOST INTERESTING PERSON. Usually, people want to take a picture with me, sit next to me, talk to me. … That has not been the case at this event,” he joked. -- This is another example of Obama's self-opinion.

Last week, U.S. Department of Education (ED) Secretary Arne Duncan called on America's youth to take the Stop Bullying Video Challenge. The challenge is for youth to create original 30- to 60-second public service announcements (PSAs) that showcase ways they are taking action against bullying and promoting a culture of kindness and respect in their communities. The PSAs should be informative and entertaining videos that send a positive message to youth about the importance of being "more than a bystander" to bullying in their schools and communities. Full details about the contest, including submission guidelines and rules for eligibility, are available at stopbullying.challenge.gov. The deadline for submissions is 11 p.m. eastern time, October 14, 2012. Youth between 13 and 18 years old are eligible to participate; however, those under 18 years of age must have permission from a parent or guardian. The contest winner will receive a grand prize of $2,000, with the two runner-ups earning $500 each. Sincere ...

A more well-rounded curriculum with less focus on a single test. Higher academic standards and more difficult classwork. Continued cuts to extracurricular and other activities because of the tough economy. Education Secretary Arne Duncan says those are some of the changes and challenges that children could notice as they start the new school year. Several significant reforms have taken place over the past three years. Forty-eight states and the District of Columbia have adopted the Common Core standards, a set of uniform benchmarks for math and reading. Thirty-two states and the district have been granted waivers from important parts of the Bush-era No Child Left Behind law.

This is great news for AP students throughout the country: ED Announces $21.5 Million To Help Low-Income Students Take AP Exams. Several media outlets are covering ED's Wednesday announcement that it is distributing $21.5 in grant money to 43 states "to help low-income high school students pay for Advanced Placement tests." The media is portraying the news in generally positive terms, and reports tend to focus on state-level coverage. The Los Angeles Times (8/2, Blume) reports that California will receive $7.6 million, and notes that the funding, "based on the anticipated number of test-takers and other factors, will provide up to $38 per exam for as many as three exams for each student. The goal is to increase the number of low-income students who can earn scores high enough to qualify for college academic credit." The Times quotes Education Secretary Arne Duncan saying, "Advanced Placement participation is an important element in creating a college-going culture in our high schools. AP courses help stud ...
Mike Huckabee Yet another federal agency is under scrutiny for holding lavish conferences at taxpayer expense. It was just reported that every year, dating back to the Bush years, the Education Department has held an annual four-day conference for about 7,000 federal education officials. Last year, it at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, and this year, it’s set for late November at an upscale resort near Disney World. Average cost to taxpayers: over one-and-a-half million dollars a year. Last year’s speaker was Education Secretary Arne Duncan, who spoke on – get this – controlling college costs. And who knows more about controlling costs than the head of a Department whose budget has more than doubled, from 32 to 71 billion dollars just since 2009? Here’s a suggestion: do we really need 7,000 federal education officials?
