Some amazing previously unseen film from two of Elvis concert performances [Note Elvis with fans mid clip indicating end of the first show] at the Municipal Auditorium, Oklahoma City has been posted on-line by the Oklahoma Historical Society. The film by WKY News features Elvis Presley, Scotty Moore, Bill Black and DJ Fontana and runs for 2:10. In what is excellent quality film, albeit a watermark we see Elvis performing at the Oklahoma City Auditorium on April 19, 1956. Scenes of the crowd [Looking quite sedate!!!], Elvis posing with fans and signing autographs. And Police escorting him out of building and woman chasing car, giving new meaning to 'Elvis has left the building', it is only early 1956 and we see clearly the full impact of Elvis mania is yet to kick in.

Elvis Is Back! is the tenth studio album by Elvis Presley, released on RCA Victor Records in mono and stereo, LPM/LSP 2231, in April 1960. Recording sessions took place on March 20 and April 3, 1960, at RCA Studio B in Nashville, Tennessee. It was Presley's first album to be released in true stereo. It peaked at number two on the Top Pop Albums chart and is listed, along with his debut and From Elvis in Memphis, in the book 1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die. It was certified Gold on July 15, 1999, by the Recording Industry Association of America. The first album by Presley after his military discharge from the army, the first day of its sessions were attended by Presley's manager, Colonel Tom Parker, his assistant Tom Diskin, and representatives from RCA in a show of interest regarding whether or not Elvis still "had it" after two years in uniform. Dennis Coffey remains an unsung hero from the halcyon era of Detroit soul, contributing guitar to landmark records issued on the Motown, Ric-Tic, and Revilot labels in addition to cutting a series of efforts under his own name, most notably the cult classic blaxploitation soundtrack Black Belt Jones. Born and raised in the Motor City, Coffey learned to play guitar at age 13 while visiting relatives in Michigan's Upper Peninsula. Though a fan of country music throughout adolescence, while attending Detroit's McKenzie High he also immersed himself in rock & roll, jazz, and blues, drawing inspiration from guitarists from Chuck Berry to Scotty Moore to Wes Montgomery. Coffey made his studio debut backing little-known rockabilly cat Vic Gallon on "I'm Gone," issued on the singer's own Gondola label. From there he played in a rockabilly duo with vocalist Durwood Hutto, eventually signing a recording contract with Jackie Wilson's manager, Nat Tarnopol. Through Tarnopol, Coffey met Motown owner Berry Gordy Jr., b ...

Elvis Aaron Presley - Elvis Aaron Presley[a] (January 8, 1935 – August 16, 1977) was an American singer, musician, and actor. Regarded as one of the most significant cultural icons of the 20th century, he is often referred to as "the King of Rock and Roll", or simply, "the King". Born in Tupelo, Mississippi, Presley and his family moved to Memphis, Tennessee, when he was 13 years old. His music career began there in 1954, when he started to work with Sam Phillips, the owner of Sun Records. Accompanied by guitarist Scotty Moore and bassist Bill Black, Presley was an early popularizer of rockabilly, an uptempo, backbeat-driven fusion of country music and rhythm and blues. RCA Victor acquired his contract in a deal arranged by Colonel Tom Parker, who was to manage the singer for more than two decades. Presley's first RCA single, "Heartbreak Hotel", released in January 1956, was a number-one hit in the US. He became the leading figure of rock and roll after a series of network television appearances and cha ...

THE 50'S - WHERE ROCK N ROLL CAME FROM Rock and roll dominated popular music in the latter half of the 1950s. The musical style originated and evolved in the United States during the late 1940s and early 1950s, and quickly spread to much of the rest of the world. Its immediate origins lay in a mixing together of various black musical genres of the time, including rhythm and blues and gospel music; with country and western and Pop. In 1951, Cleveland, Ohio disc jockey Alan Freed began playing rhythm and blues music for a multi-racial audience, and is credited with first using the phrase "rock and roll" to describe the music. The 1950s saw the growth in popularity of the electric guitar (developed and popularized by Les Paul). Paul's hit records like "How High the Moon," and "The World Is Waiting for the Sunrise," helped lead to the development of a specifically rock and roll style of playing of such exponents as Chuck Berry, Link Wray, and Scotty Moore. Chuck Berry, who is considered to be one of the pione ...

CRYING IN THE CHAPEL This song was written by Artie Glenn. It was a country hit for his son Darrell Glenn in 1953 and later an R&B hit for The Orioles. It was also recorded by The Statesmen. Even Elvis' girlfriend Anita Wood recorded the song in 1957. Elvis recorded it on October 30, 1960 at RCA Studio B in Nashville. It was at the end of a very long and productive day of recording the gospel album "His Hand In Mine". Musicians on the session were: Scotty Moore, Hank Garland and Elvis (all on guitar); Bob Moore (bass); D.J. Fontana and Buddy Harman (both on drums); Floyd Cramer (piano) and Boots Randolph (saxophone). The Jordanaires and Millie Kirkham were the backup vocalists. The song was not included on the "His Hand in Mine" album, the recording log noting that a satisfactory master was not completed. Years later, on April 6, 1965, take 3 was issued as a single with B-side "I Believe in the Man in the Sky". Happy Birthday to "the King". Check out the seminal 54' Sun Studios session for the genius of Scotty Moore on guitar.
Been knocking out these Elvis songs like mad! Learning all these Scotty Moore, James Burton, and Hank Garland licks are a blast! Ready to dominate!
Happy Birthday Elvis! You know a person is special when you identify said person by just using their first name. "The King' or at least "The king of Rock and Roll'...can't we officially give Elvis one of those titles? Before Elvis Presley, what was there? Elvis and his band, Scotty Moore on guitar, Bill Black on bass and D.J. Fontana on drums popularized rockabilly music..a fusion of country and blues. These four guys became the model of what a rock and roll band should sound like...2 guitars, bass and drums. Levon Helm{the former drummer for The Band} said that that original line up was the best live band he ever heard... There was no blueprint for Elvis and his band...they made it up as they went along... A series of TV appearances made Elvis a household name in 1956...rock and roll had hit the airwaves. Music was never the same. As Chuck Berry said "Hail, Hail, rock and roll"! I have written about Elvis before, specifically, his 1968 comeback special. You can find it in the blog history if you are inte ...

MONOPOLY AND SCRABBLE Elvis's two favorite board games. Elvis got together with the Beatles on August 27, 1965, and the five of them played Monopoly. - First Record & Early Gigs On Monday, July 19, 1954, hot off the presses at Buster Williams' Plastic Products plant on Chelsea Ave. in Memphis, came the release of Elvis Presley's first record. It was Sun record number 209 -"That's All Right" backed with "Blue Moon of Kentucky". Producer/Sun Records owner Sam Phillips already had 6,000 local orders. Peter Guralnick in his book "Last Train To Memphis" said, "Ed Leek, a Humes classmate who was premed at Memphis State, described going down to the plant and watching the first records come off the press with Elvis, who was 'like a little kid at Christmas.'" Scotty Moore and Bill Black were the musicians who backed Elvis and they were members of a band called the Starlite Wranglers. In 1951, 18 year-old Richard Penniman, who is already using the stage name Little Richard, makes his first recordings for RCA Camden at the studios of Atlanta radio station WGST. His early attempts imitated the Gospel style of late-1940s Jump Blues artist Billy Wright who was a friend that set him up with the opportunity to record.   In 1951, Johnnie Ray, with the Four Lads as his backup singers, recorded "Cry."   In 1954, two weeks after his appearance at Nashville's Grand Ole Opry, Elvis Presley performs on the Country music radio program, Louisiana Hayride, broadcast live on KWKH in Shreveport. After an enthusiastic reception from the audience, Presley is booked to appear every week for a year at $18 per show. His sidemen, Bill Black and Scotty Moore are paid $12 each.   In 1955, in Oklahoma City, Bill Haley and His Comets and Elvis Presley were the opening acts for country music singer Hank Snow for two shows at the Municipal Auditorium.   In 1957, "Mister Rock and Roll," starring Alan ...

In 1954, in Memphis, rising star Elvis Presley, with backup musicians Scotty Moore and Bill Black, performed on a makeshift stage built on a flatbed truck outside the Katz Drug Store at the grand opening of the Lamar-Airways Shopping Center. Elvis' high school buddy George Klein, emceed the event. Johnny Cash, recently discharged from the Air Force, just married and relocated to Memphis, was in the audience that night. In his autobiography he wrote, "Two or three hundred people, mostly teenage girls, had come out to see him. With just one single to his credit, he sang those two songs over and over. That's the first time I met him. Vivian and I went up to him after the show, and he invited us to his next date at the Eagle's Nest." Thirteen years before his single "The Letter" as a member of the Memphis-based group the Box Tops, John Evans, then 7 years-old, was also in attendance and remembered them "dressed as real weird country musicians with Elvis wearing pink and gray." Referring to Bl ...

Pop quiz answer: At Sun Records in Memphis on July 6, 1954, Elvis Presley, accompanied by Bill Black and Scotty Moore, recorded his first commercial single: the blues tune "That's All Right." Arthur "Bib Boy" Crudup had recorded a version of the song earlier in the year. For the "B" side, Elvis turned to a country music favorite, Bill Monroe's "Blue Moon of Kentucky." Two days later, Dewey Phillips played acetate recordings of both songs on his "Red, Hot and Blue" rhythm and blues program on Memphis radio station WHBQ. Listeners flooded the station's telephone switchboard, clamoring to hear it again. Phillips responded by playing the songs a dozen more times that evening -- and Elvis Presley's star was on the rise.

1. Chet Atkins. In my humble opinion Chet is the greatest mind to ever pick up the instrument Chet has inspired some of the greatest player known to man including The Rolling Stone's Keith Richards, The Beatles George Harrison, Tommy Emmanuel, Steve Wariner, Dire Straits Front-man Mark Knopfler, Scotty Moore, Eric Clapton, George Benson and Jeff Beck just to name a few. Chet Atkins himself was heavily inspired by Merle Travis for his own finger style playing with that being said that lead Chet to leave high school in 1942 working jobs as a Discjocky and part-time musician at WNOX-AM in Knoxville. But Chet Atkins story really began around 1947 when he signed a contract for RCA Victor his early recording didn't sell too well Chet later noted " I Sounded Like 2 Bad Guitar Players In The Same Room" but his sound was different and that's what Nashville lacked at the time so this lead him to cutting more records and touring with The Legendary Carter Family. By the mid 1950s Chet had finally made a name for hims ...

**FOR the ELVIS FANS** ~33 Things You Should Know About Elvis Presley~ 1. Even in the South, Elvis was a pretty strange name. "The first time I heard it, I said, 'Weird name,'" recalls Scotty Moore, who played guitar at Presley's first recording session at Sam Phillips's Sun Records. "Sam's secretary wrote it down for me." 2. Elvis had an amazing memory. He'd hear songs on the radio and then sing them immediately. "It seemed like he knew every song in the world," Moore says. "Country, pop, R&B. Elvis had a sponge for a brain when it came to lyrics." 3. He was very polite ... "He was always taught manners," Sam Phillips says. "His mother thought there was no reason to treat people except with great respect. If you didn't say 'yessir' and 'nosir,' that was a cardinal sin." 4. ... But you wouldn't like him when he was angry. "He was real slow to anger," Phillips says. "But once he was angered, pound for pound I don't know of a person who was stronger. I remember one time at the gas station out the ba ...

He was born in Nottingham[1] and attended the Margaret Glen-Bott School in Wollaton[2] which was a precursor to comprehensive schools with grammar and secondary modern streams.[3] He began playing guitar at the age of 13, and with Leo Lyons formed the core of the band Ten Years After in 1960. Influenced by his parents' collection of jazz and blues records, it was the advent of rock and roll that sparked his interest, and guitarists such as Chuck Berry and Scotty Moore provided his inspiration. Lee began to play professionally in 1962, in a band named the Jaybirds, who enjoyed popularity in their native England, but moved on to seek a wider fan-base. They began that year to perform in the Star-Club in Hamburg, Germany, following closely behind The Beatles. There, with Alvin Lee assuming the permanent role of lead vocalist in addition to that of lead guitarist, they began to build a following. It was not until the band moved to London in 1966 and changed its name, first to Jaybird, dropping 'The' and 's' to ...
The history of Heartbreak Hotel    By Spencer Leigh  Published: 24 March 2006    Fifty years ago, on 12 May 1956, Elvis Presley made his UK chart debut with "Heartbreak Hotel". Up until then, the rock'n'roll records in the Hit Parade had been good-time novelties, but Presley's brooding presence and his menacing arrangement changed that. Popular music would never be the same again, but how did Presley come to make such a groundbreaking record?    Elvis Presley started recording for Sam Phillips' Sun label in Memphis in July 1954. Working with two country musicians, Scotty Moore on lead guitar and Bill Black on stand-up bass, the first single was "That's All Right". Selling heavily in the South, Elvis Presley made the US country Top 10 with the hiccuping "Baby Let's Play House" and followed it with an echo-drenched ballad, "I Forgot To Remember To Forget".   The folk singer Tom Paxton recalls an early concert: "Elvis was so new that the promoters didn't know what he was and so the supporting bill wa ...
