Who is Saudi Arabia's new King Salman? (CNN) After the death of King Abdullah, Saudi Arabia quickly announced that one of his younger brothers, Crown Prince Salman, was succeeding him. The man taking control of the world's top oil exporter is well established in the Gulf kingdom's corridors of power. Salman, 79, is "a stalwart of the royal family" who is "viewed as a pragmatic and cautious reformer, much like his predecessor," says CNN's Becky Anderson in Abu Dhabi. He has served as defense minister and deputy prime minister of Saudi Arabia, a vital U.S. ally in the Middle East, for years. Like Abdullah, he's one of the dozens of sons of Saudi Arabia's founder, King Abdulaziz. Here are some of the key points about the new ruler. 1: He's an experienced leader Salman was governor of the Saudi capital, Riyadh, for nearly five decades during a period of significant change. "When he became governor in 1963, Riyadh had 200,000 inhabitants — today it has more than seven million," Bruce Riedel, a senior fellow ...

I'm moving to the Middle East next weekend to work in the city of Al-Khobar in Saudi Arabia. I didn't post anything about it over the last year because I wanted to wait until all the details were finalized. For the first year or so I'll spend quite a few months in Abu Dhabi in the UAE completing a lot of training. I'm going to be a field engineer in the oil & gas industry there, working for a "western" company called Schlumberger. I'm very excited to work overseas! Sure, I'd have rather gotten an assignment in Australia or Brazil or Scotland ... but any international assignment right out of school is extremely rare. The truth is, I've always wanted to spend some time in the Middle East. Everyone says "Wow, I'd love to visit Dubai!" and I finally get the chance to! But beyond the well-publicized Dubai, there are many beautiful skylines and landscapes all around that region. Also, there will be more opportunities to move across continents. To my environmentally conscious friends: Please put me out of work! ...
TODAY'S BEEF: where to get a good cup of coffee [sorry Dareen Nassar - you started me off on this rampage]. I mean across the entire Middle East, in a "region" known because of its hospitality and the offer as coffee, I still cannot seem to find a cup of the elusive black gold. Sure I can cross the border into the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and I will find barrels of black gold in the middle of sand dunes, but alas this is not the type of black gold I seek, nor one that can replace my morning substitute, granulated nescafe gold [which is about the most consistent coffee I find]. I have tried coffee in Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Ras al Khamieh, Ajman, Fujariah, Egypt, Lebanon, Kuwait, Qatar, Oman and Bahrain - even here in Jordan and I cannot find a decent brew. I go to a half assed Concession Stand at Town Hall station in Sydney and I can get a good cup of Joe but even in Emirates Palace Hotel, where they charge up to $90 for a cup with gold dust [and trust me, I tried that coffee, it tastes like something they diver ...

From April to as late as Oct. 18 1973, King Faisal of Saudi Arabia had been insistently warning Washington to temper its bias towards Israel. Now he acted. Riyadh announced at 9 p.m. local time on Oct. 20 that it was imposing a total oil boycott against the United States, its closest Western friend. The Saudi action had a domino effect. Abu Dhabi, Algeria, Bahrain, Kuwait and Qatar quickly followed suit, violently disrupting international commerce. The boycott was lifted on March 18, 1974, leaving economies around the world shattered and many individuals living poorer lives, Henry Kissinger (Former US secretary of state and German born Jewish refugee) admitted: "I made a mistake. It increased our unemployment and contributed to the deepest recession we have had in the post World War II period. Skeptics might wonder whether it was a mistake, or wanton disregard of U.S. interests during a passionate effort to help Israel...

SAUDI ARABIA VS. IRAN: RELIGION, IDENTITY, LEGITIMACY IN A GEO-POLITICAL CONFRONTATION by Glauco D’Agostino " I prefer and wish for some comments from my dear brother and friend Dr. Mohammed Alsulami from Saudi Arabia , who has expertise and better understanding of this particular subject " This article was first published in “Geopolitica. Revistă de Geografie Politică, Geopolitică şi GeoStrategie”, Anul XII, nr. 54-55 (1/ 2014) “Lumea în mişcare” (A World in Motion), Editura “Top Form”, Asociaţia de Geopolitica “Ion Conea”, Bucureşti, 2014. Although written in late March, when the Iraqi situation did not have the current problematics, yet, it offers a stimulant key for an understanding of the ongoing events. The Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates and Bahrein breaking off of diplomatic relations with Qatar on March 5th, shatters political solidarity of the Arab States within the Gulf Cooperation Council, active since May 25th 1981 under the Treaty of Abu Dhabi. Health authorities in the UAE have announced that an 82-year-old man has been diagnosed with the MERS coronavirus infection, the first case to be recorded in the Gulf state. The Emirati citizen who contracted the SARS-like virus suffers from cancer and is being treated in hospital in the capital, Abu Dhabi health authority said in a statement carried by WAM state news agency late Thursday. The authority said that this was the first case to be diagnosed in the United Arab Emirates. In May, France said a 65-year-old man was in hospital after being diagnosed with the coronavirus after a holiday in Dubai. But the UAE health ministry said at the time no cases of the virus had been recorded in the country. Experts are struggling to understand MERS, or Middle East Respiratory Syndrome, which has mostly affected neighbouring Saudi Arabia where 65 cases have been detected, including 38 fatalities. The World Health Organisation announced last week that it had convened emergency talks on the MERS virus. Concerns hav ...

Saudi Arabia Threatens to Lay Siege to Qatar: Cooperation or Confrontation? David Hearst03/09/14 12:57 PM ET Saudi Arabia has threatened to blockade its neighbouring Gulf State Qatar by land and sea unless it cuts ties with the Muslim Brotherhood, closes Al Jazeera, and expels local branches of two prestigious U.S. think tanks, the Brookings Doha Center and the Rand Qatar Policy Institute. The threats against the television station Al Jazeera, Brookings Institute and the Rand Corporation, were made by the Saudi Foreign Minister Saud bin Faisal in a foreign minister's meeting of the Gulf Cooperation Council in Riyadh last week, according to a source who was present. Bin Faisal said only these acts would be sufficient if Qatar wanted to avoid "being punished." News of the threats to shut down the Brookings and Rand Corporation think tanks in Doha will embarrass the U.S. president Barack Obama, who is due to visit Riyadh at the end of month. His Secretary of Commerce Penny Pritzker was in Abu Dhabi on Sunday ...
Break Up in the Gulf What the GCC Dispute Means for Qatar By Bilal Y. Saab MARCH 6, 2014 Qatar's Crown Prince Sheikh Tamim Bin Hamad Al Thani smiles during his arrival for an economic ties visit at Khartoum Airport, December 4, 2011. (Courtesy Reuters) On March 5, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates (UAE), and Bahrain announced that they had withdrawn their ambassadors from Qatar, claiming that Doha had been violating a clause in the Gulf Cooperation Council charter banning interference in the domestic affairs of fellow GCC members. The decision, unprecedented in the GCC’s history, hints at significant changes to come for the GCC and the balance of power in the Gulf. The dispute between GCC members had been simmering for a while, and it was only a matter of time before it boiled over. In December, during a GCC Summit in Kuwait, Riyadh and Abu Dhabi had been close to singling out Qatar for its alleged financing of terrorism in Syria and elsewhere. But, at the last minute, the Saudis pulled the plug to ...

Arab fund buys luxury Greek island resortAn Arab fund including investors from the UAE, Kuwait and Saudi Arabia has reportedly bought a luxury sea-side resort on Greek island Corfu for €400m ($550m). The Greek government’s privatisation vehicle, Hellenic Republic Asset Development Fund, announced last week that the Jermyn Street Real Estate Fund was the preferred bidder to take a majority stake in Astir Palace Vouliagmeni. The Jermyn Street Real Estate fund is managed by London-based AGC, representing investors including from Turkey’s Dogus Group, Abu Dhabi, Dubai, Kuwait and Saudi Arabia. The sale had been subject to approval from the Court of Auditors and a presidential decree supporting the planned development at the site on one of Greece’s most popular tourist islands. According to reports, the investors intend to upgrade the resort’s two hotels, Arion Hotel and Westin Hotel, to six stars and construct 20 luxuryresidences for the world’s most wealthy. Opponents to the development claim it ...

Today's rant, actually an answer to something else. General interest -as usual political, because it is a difficult time we're in, the backlash against an enormous change. In just a few years minority groups and women have way more power, and less educated white men have lost a lot of power. And we have gone back to having a class of economic royalty at the top. The very thing the Revolutionary War overthrew, is back. People like Jamie Dimon and the Kochsucker brothers and various sheiks in Saudi Arabia and Abu Dhabi figured out how to grab billions. At least the Steve Jobs' and Bill Gates' of the world earned their money by bringing something new of great value to the world. That's the new standard of achievement - yes, throwing a football and driving a truck are good, but now a man has to ask himself if he can write some code as well. But anyway, it's no fun to talk about and it's getting worse. Not to mention the re-fighting of the 'Civil War' - funny how the former Confederate states are now the home ...
Baker Creek's Stand was deluged with crowds of people today on the first day of the Global Forum for innovations in Agriculture in Abu Dhabi. Despite the techno-feel of the conference, all of the delegates were visiting our stand en mass and questions were flying..Are these GMO? Why are they so beautiful? Will they grow here? Can we get these seeds in Africa? Do you ship to Saudi Arabia? Irina Stoenescu was sometimes having 5-10 people in line waiting to speak to her about this truly "unique" stand with "real" seeds! It was remarked over and over again by the other exhibitors that our stand was the best attended!!! Everyone one loves natural and it shows! We gave away at least 700 packets of seeds today!

Middle East At its summit meeting in Abu Dhabi, the Gulf Cooperation Council strongly condemned the Babri Mosque demolition. It adopted a resolution which described the act as a "crime against Muslim holy places." Among its member states, Saudi Arabia severely condemned the act. The United Arab Emirates, home to large expatriate communities of Indians and Pakistanis, conveyed a more moderate reaction. In response, the Indian government criticized the GCC for what it regarded as interference in its internal affairs.[citation needed]

THE STATE OF TWO STATE SO CALLED SOLUTION: Secretary Kerry departed Israel today in "high spirits" after an intense two days of meetings with Prime Minister Netanyahu and President Abbas in which they discussed security arrangements for a future peace treaty. Earlier in the week, Israel was officially included into the UN Human Rights Council’s Western European and Others Group (WEOG), despite the fact that some European countries had reservations about admitting Israel into the group before the conclusion of the nine months of Israeli-Palestinian negotiations. Finally, this week we also learned that Israeli President Shimon Peres had addressed an audience of Arab and Muslim politicians, including the son of the King of Saudi Arabia, that convened at the Gulf States Security Summit in Abu Dhabi in the United Arab Emirates two weeks ago. “There was a lot of excitement from both sides from his appearance. Everyone understood that this is something historic: The president of the Jewish State is sitting i ...

Hrh Prince Omar Kiram... BEWARE OF THE FAKE SULTANS OF SULU & SABAH The matter of Royal Succession to be true Sultan or King is based on one Law – namely the Ancient Global Law of Royalty or Law of Succession that is founded on Primogeniture. It started as a law in 5000 BC in Sumeria, Mesopotamia, Egypt, Persia, China, Greece, Rome, etc. Primogeniture: The ancient and medieval custom of allowing the first born legitimate son down to the youngest son to inherit all of his father's properties, estates, wealth, and titles upon the father's death. This law still exists in our modern age. Primogeniture was and is the key issue in determining succession to the royal throne. That is why, in royal sultanates and kingdoms globally (in Sulu and Sabah, Bahrain, Brunei, Jogjakarta Indonesia, Jordan, Kuwait, Malaysia, Morocco, Muscat & Oman, Saudi Arabia, Qatar) or emirates and principalities like Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Sharjah including the kingdoms of Cambodia and Thailand or Empire of Japan and in European kingdoms -- ...

Qatar seeks to raise its credit rating by two levels to AAA, putting the world's biggest exporter of liquefied natural gas on par with countries including Canada and Norway. Bonds from Qatar and Abu Dhabi, which has the same rating, emerged as a refuge for investors amid Europe's sovereign debt crisis. The cost of insuring Qatar's dollar debt for five years, a measure of credit risk, dropped 45 basis points last year to 82. The contracts declined another 20 basis points this year to 63. Qatar will record a budget surplus of 8.5 per cent of gross domestic product this year, the third biggest among the six- nation Gulf Cooperation Council after Kuwait and Saudi Arabia. The government plans Next Year's budget based oil priced at $65 a barrel. Source: Bloomberg
An inbox message I received from a Muslimah who lived in Saudi Arabia for many years and is now residing in Abu Dhabi. What is it with South African women married to Arab men? I know of quite a few of them having resided in the Middle East for almost 25 years now. Why do these women become so arrogant and unsociable? They act as though they are Arab and far superior than the rest of us. At the end of the day they will never be Arab. A girl I knew from Durban married an Arab man. When she lived in South Africa she was warm and welcoming. We use to hang out together a lot. Now in the Middle East she acts as though she is the cat's whiskers. I need to make an appointment to meet her and when we do meet she is only bragging about her rich in laws, the vacations abroad and her Filipino maids. Why can't these women be proudly South African? Shouldn't we all be proud of our heritage and background?

SOUTHWEST ASIA SO-CALLED ‘THE Middle East’: The Middle East is mostly desert, with high arid mountains to the north. The Mediterranean Sea lies to the west, and towards the south are the Red Sea, Persian Gulf and the Indian Ocean. The fertile land between the Tigris and the Euphrates is the site of the world’s oldest civilisation. Christianity, Judaism and Islam arose in the Middle East. The Rub Al Khali (‘empty quarter’) in Saudi Arabia is the LARGEST sand desert in the world, with dunes as high as 150 metres. This region is scorchingly hot in summer (I have witnessed a 50 degrees centigrade temperature in Abu Dhabi, UAE around the year 2000). The coastal areas are humid and, in the north, the mountains are snow-capped. Oranges, grapefruit, melons, pomegranate and vegetables are grown along the Mediterranean. Date palm trees grow in the oases and places which have some water. The date palm tree has large, feathery leaves and sweet, brown fruits, called dates; each has a hard seed. The date is a ...

Sitting through these presentations at the JCCP International Symposium is a humiliating, sorry humbling experience for me as a Nigerian. The leitmotif of the presentations from such countries as Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, Abu Dhabi, Oman, Malaysia, Indonesia is that they have invested and are continuing to invest massively in oil and gas infrastructure, especially in the downstream (refineries construction, expansion and upgrade). Consequently, all these countries each have expanding refining capacities of millions of barrels per day (Saudi Arabia: nearly 5 million). Nigeria has only 445,000 bpd capacity from only 4 antiquated refineries, that have fallen far behind on technology upgrades. We dwell rather on sharing oil revenue between the three tiers of government, for onward transmission to funding the lifestyle of the elite (including myself, unfortunately).

What album made you stop in your tracks/rock your world/open your mind when you were 14? We are driving from Qatar to Abu Dhabi, through Saudi Arabia, next week. 7 hours give or take a few hours depending on border crossings, and we will have the undivided attention of a 14 year old. I want to play him some albums that he hasn't already heard, while he stares at the vast desert sands. (Which means he is covered on hippie, 70's music. :)) Can't wait to see your recommendations! Thanks!
Every day I get asked about interesting places to visit. People often want to know, ahead of the crowds, where is the next must see destination. It’s a tough job but I’ve taken it on my shoulders to see as many of these places first hand so I can come back and share the stories with you. I like to get off the beaten track and get to know the people and their stories. And so a trip to Oman seemed to fulfill the brief perfectly.   The first question many people asked when I first told them that I was going to Oman was “where’s that?” The second question was “why would you go there?” So let me clear those things up straight away. Oman is an Islamic country located in the Arabian Peninsula. Many people are more familiar with its neighbours, Saudi Arabia, Yemen and United Arab Emirates (home to the bustling metropolis of Dubai and Abu Dhabi).   Oman is known for her rugged natural beauty and fascinating history, and I was determined to debunk the myth that Oman was isolated and un ...

Dubai (/duːˈbaɪ/ doo-BY; Arabic: دبيّ Dubayy, IPA: [dʊ'bæj]) is an emirate within the United Arab Emirates (UAE). A city within the emirate is also named Dubai. The emirate is located south east of the Persian Gulf on the Arabian Peninsula and has the largest population with the second-largest land territory by area of all the emirates, after Abu Dhabi.[4] Dubai and Abu Dhabi are the only two emirates to have veto power over critical matters of national importance in the country's legislature.[5] Dubai City is located on the emirate's northern coastline. Dubai is often misperceived as a country and in some cases, the whole UAE has been described as 'Dubai.'[6] The earliest mention of Dubai is in 1095, and the earliest settlement known as Dubai town dates from 1799. Dubai was formally established in 1833 by Sheikh Maktoum bin Buti al Maktoum when he persuaded 800 members of the Bani Yas tribe, living in what is now part of Saudi Arabia, to follow him to the Dubai Creek by the Al Abu Falasa clan of ...

Chevron Corp. (CVX) is considering using solar energy to produce the steam needed to pump heavy crude from an oilfield straddling Saudi Arabia and Kuwait. Chevron may start a pilot solar plant at the end of 2013, Hashim al-Rifaai, chairman and managing director of Kuwait Gulf Oil Co., told reporters in Abu Dhabi today. Energy from the sun would heat water to create steam, which would then be injected underground to make the heavy oil liquid enough to flow, al- Rifaai said. Solar power would be used in conjunction with burning natural gas for the so-called steam-flood development at the Wafra field in the Neutral Zone, which Saudi Arabia and Kuwait share. Kuwait Gulf is responsible for managing Kuwait’s share, while Chevron operates Saudi Arabia’s interest. Chevron is assessing the use of solar energy as it seeks to free up much-needed natural gas. Kuwait buys the fuel in liquid form at international prices while Saudi Arabia burns crude in its power stations because they don’t have sufficient local ...

This might be a long ride, so buckle up and hold on... This is just an observation, not a statement. I think English is the new Latin... I grew up in Lake Charles, LA, with a Cajun surname, and great grand parents that didn't speak much English. I never did learn to speak much French. Since then, I've covered most of the world on the surface, and some of it twice. Counting air travel, I've just about been all around the world. I won't bore you with the complete list of places I've seen, but I'll have to hit the high spots and the far edges. Africa, once, at Mombasa, Kenya. Australia. So many trips to Singapore, Hong Kong, the Philippines, all over Japan, and just about anywhere in the Pacific and Indian Oceans. Oman, Bahrain, Saudi Arabia, Dubai, Abu Dhabi. (Pardon my spelling.. it's been awhile since I was there...) Aruba, St. Thomas, St. Johns, St. Croix, Jamaica, Puerto Rico. Panama, a few times, once during Carnival. Guatemala. Holland. Thailand, numerous times and locations. I've bee ...
