My daughter gave me this book by Sarah Vowell, knowing my interest in JFK assassination books. This book is a first-person account of the author's decision to visit the birthplaces and museums of the Presidents who have been killed in office. Sounds macabre, but it's not. She comes up with interesting stories about not only Kennedy and Lincoln, but James Garfield and William McKinley as well. I now have three more of Vowell's books, all on totally different subjects than this one. She is a regular contributor to NPR's "This American Life", where I think my daughter discovered the author. I recommend the book; the author has kind of a quirky writing style that I enjoyed very much.
Of all the countries the United States invaded or colonized in 1898, Sarah Vowell considers the story of the Americanization of Hawaii to be the most intriguing.
Reading Nick Hornby reminded me of a Sarah Vowell & now that I've remembered about Assassination Vacation, I'm reminding you all to read it.

I have a book suggestion: The Wordy Shipmates by Sarah Vowell. This book is mega-entertaining, as in fun. Sarah is a great writer of entertaining history. And it is also mega-informative, as in the origins of "Church-State Separation; proposed by one of those Marxist-pinko, God-hating, *** thieving, rich-people-jealous, Puritan Ministers just last year, aka the 17th century. A hundred years before the Declaration. I'm speaking here of the founder of Rhode Island; the first colony to declare itself independent of British rule. I'm speaking, here, of Roger Williams, banned from the Massachusetts Bay Colony because the man was too religiously conservative. The man who wandered for quite a time, living with the natives who he thought of as devil worshippers but still put in the time to create one of the first books translating the language of those natives into English and back again. Yes, that man not only believed in the separation of church and state, he had a deep, personal, vested interest in it. ...aft ...

Tank Man, or the Unknown Protester, is the nickname of an anonymous man who stood in front of a column of tanks on June 5, 1989, the morning after the Chinese military had suppressed the Tiananmen Square protests of 1989 by force. The man achieved widespread international recognition due to the videotape and photographs taken of the incident. Some have identified the man as Wang Weilin, but the name has not been confirmed and little is known about him or of his fate after the confrontation that day. Sarah Vowell writes in her 2002 book, The Partly Cloudy Patriot. in regards to the Florida secretary of State Katherine Harris who was likened to Rosa Parks by Christian Science Monitor writer Peter Grier. Miss Vowell writes, "As far as I'm concerned, about the only person in recent memory who has an unimpeachable right to compare himself to Rosa Parks is that Chinese student who stared down those tanks at Tiananmen Square. What happened to the "Tank Man" following the demonstration is not known. Some say he w ...
TOP TEN BEST KEVBOT EXPERIENCES OF 2013. NUMBER 8! THE LUNATIC GRIP OF LAWRENCE BLOCK – I don’t fall for new writers easily. Books, sure. Series, sometimes. But full-on authors? Not generally. Stephen King has been a mainstay since I was twelve. I went through a weird Michael Crichton phase when I was in my early twenties (weird because one of the few books I didn’t read is Jurassic Park). I got hooked on William Goldman (The Princess Bride) and Robert Parker (the Spenser series), on Harlan Coben and Nick Hornby and Dennis Lehane, I still lust for the Dickensian flavor of John Irving, and I remain enthralled by contemporary essayists and memoirists like Sarah Vowell, Chuck Klosterman, Rob Sheffield, Bill Bryson, and A.J. Jacobs. But none have hit me with the immediacy of Lawrence Block. I stumbled upon him while doing research for another book I finished this year (Stephen King Limited), and King’s essay on Block convinced me to pick up the first Matthew Scudder crime novel, Sins of the Fa ...

In Hebrew the name of God is spelled YHWH. Since ancient Hebrew had no written vowels, it is uncertain how the name was pronounced originally, but there are records of the name in Greek, which did have written vowels. These records indicate that in all likelihood the name should be pronounced "Yahweh." Shortly before the first century A.D., it became common for Jews to avoid saying the divine name for fear of misusing it and breaking the second commandment ("You shall not take the name of the Lord, your God, in vain," Dt 5:11). Whenever they read Scripture aloud and encountered the divine name, they substituted another Hebrew word, "Adonai" (which means "Lord" or "my Lord"), in its place. Eventually Hebrew developed written vowels, which appeared as small marks called vowel points and were placed above and below the consonants of a word. In the sixth or seventh century some Jews began to place the vowel points for "Adonai" over the consonants for "Yahweh" to remind the reader of Scripture to say "Adonai" ...

Nicodemus says to Him, How can a man be born when he is old? Can he enter the second time into his mother's womb, and be born?“Yahusha answered, Truly, truly I say to you, Except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of Elohim. That which is born of the flesh is flesh; and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit. Marvel not that I said to you, You must be born again” (John 3:3-7).If they did not know Him, they were not His children. The apostle Paul, a Hebrew chosen of Yah to be His child, His disciple, and an apostle, wrote this to other children of Yah, believers at Rome:“But you are not in the flesh, but in the Spirit, if so be that the Spirit of Yah dwell in you. Now if any man doesn’t have the Spirit of yahusha, he is none of His. And if Yahusha be in you, the body is dead because of sin; but the Spirit is life because of righteousness. But if the Spirit of Him that raised up Yahusha from the dead dwell in you, He that raised up Messiah from the dead sha ...
An excerpt from a Washington Times article with comment. What exactly are the qualifications for a journalism degree? Is English a part of the program? "Names with the soft consonant “l” or that end in a long “a” — for example, President Obama’s daughter Malia — are more likely to be found in Democratic neighborhoods, while names with hard vowel sounds such as K, G or B — think former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin’s sons Track and Trig — are more popular in Republican communities." Comment: Let me see if I remember my vowels: A, E, I, O, U, and sometimes... K, G, and B? What kind of writer doesn't know the difference between a vowel and a consonant? What a dope! (BTW, nice subtle dig at conservatives by associating them with totalitarians - I'm sure the choice of letters - KGB - was purely coincidental.) Read more:

Calling all English people: why is it an hour and not a hour? Is there a reason? I had an ESL student the other day who was so confused, and I just said: I don't know why, and I hate that answer for them. It's unsatisfying and unhelpful. Let us find out for you: come back next week for the answer. Current Writing Center theories, after said student left: it's because of a breath in Greek that translated into English as an and not a (drawn for me by a co-worker who reads ancient Greek and made sense) and/or "a hour" is now acceptable because it's fallen into standard usage. I call upon your collective amazing insight, especially Megan O'Neill and Joel Davis. After all, Chopin wrote the Story of An Hour, not the Story Of A Hour. Did we miss something really basic?

The Partly Cloudy Patriot by Sarah Vowell, Katherine Streeter (Illustrations) Sarah Vowell travels through the American past and, in doing so, investigates the dusty, bumpy roads of her own life. In this insightful and funny collection of personal stories Vowell -- widely hailed for her inimitable stories on public radio's This American Life -- ponders a number of curious questions: Why is she happiest when visiting the sites of bloody struggles like Salem or Gettysburg? Why do people always inappropriately compare themselves to Rosa Parks? Why is a bad life in sunny California so much worse than a bad life anywhere else? What is it about the Zen of foul shots? And, in the title piece, why must doubt and internal arguments haunt the sleepless nights of the true patriot? Her essays confront a wide range of subjects, themes, icons, and historical moments: Ike, Teddy Roosevelt, and Bill Clinton; Canadian Mounties and German filmmakers; Tom Cruise and Buffy the Vampire Slayer; twins and nerds; the Gettysburg ...

Morning Jolt By Jim Geraghty John Kerry Was For 'Kyrzakhstan' Before He Was Against It From a print news account: John Kerry has suffered his first gaffe as the new US secretary of state, inventing the nation of 'Kyrzakhstan' In an embarrassing slip of the tongue, Mr Kerry last week praised US diplomats working to secure "democratic institutions" in the Central Asian country, which does not exist. The newly minted diplomat was referring to Kyrgyzstan, a poor, landlocked nation of 5.5 million, which he appeared to confuse with its resource-rich neighbour to the north, Kazakhstan. The State Department kindly omitted the error in the official transcript of Wednesday's speech, which Mr Kerry delivered on the eve of his first foreign trip as secretary of state. (So John Kerry said 'Kyrzakhstan' when he meant 'Kyrgyzstan,' a small but strategically important Central Asian nation that has suffered from a vowel drought for many decades. Big deal? Small deal? I'd argue that our assessment of Kerry's intelligence o ...
