When talking about film in the San Luis Valley, you hear about Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade and the Lone Ranger a lot. Those two films may be the most prominent films shot in our area, but the Valley actually has a fairly significant film history behind it. One part of that history is "Where the *** s that Gold", starring Willie Nelson, Delta Burke, and Jack Elam. Those of you who were around the area in the late 80's may remember this made for TV movie, filming around Ferguson's Trestle on the Cumbres and Toltec Railroad leaving Antonito.

rio Grande Rift New Mexico, United States The Rio Grande Rift began its activity about 13 million years ago. It borders the Colorado Plateau and extends through the San Luis Valley between the Sangre de Cristo Mountains and the San Juan Mountains. The northern part of the rift lies near Taos and Albuquerque, New Mexico. The lower portion of the rift is characterized by flat territory, such as the Plains of Saint Augustin. Signs of volcanic activity are abundant along the Rio Grande Rift. An example is the Valles caldera in the Jemez Mountains near Los Alamos. This is one of the largest calderas known and is believed to have formed through the eruption and eventual collapse of a volcano whose output of tephra filled in large portions of the rift in the vicinity of Los Alamos about 1.12 million years ago. Cinder cones in the Valles Caldera area indicate that volcanism was active here only a few thousand years ago. Numerous lava flows are visible along the rift, notably the Malpais lava beds near Carriozo. T ...

Ride The Rockies Day 4 - Pagosa Springs to Alamosa via Wolf Creek Pass (10,850 feet) Big 91 mile ride today, with the tours biggest climb to start the day. The Pass was tough, but worth it. The middle third of the ride was fast and included some of the best scenery we've seen, with a cascading creek down the east side of the pass. Rode through several small towns, who were very welcoming. Monte Vista served us free Baked Potatoes in the town park, which were delicious. (This is in Colorado Spud Country.) The final ride in to Alamosa was pretty tedious; straight and flat. There's a lot more of that tomorrow as we ride north through the San Luis Valley to Salida. Nobody knows what is going to happen to us after that. We are obviously going to have a reroute do to the fires that have blown up the past 24 hours.
Dreaded day 4 of Ride the Rockies is over. 90 miles starting with a climb over Wolf Creek Pass followed by 50 flat and windy miles across the San Luis Valley. Plenty of suffering but the beer and baked potato rest stop were just the thing to power in the final 16 miles in the heat of the day. Now its BEEF and beer at the San Luis Valley Brewing Co. :)
Great Sand Dunes National Park Notice the name of the park is not Average Sand Dunes. In Colorado's San Luis Valley wedged between the San Juan and Sangre de Christo ranges lie North America's tallest sand dunes. The one I summitted is 650 feet above the valley floor. Everything in Colorado is tall except me. I am happy to report I was not turned back by White Death on this hike. Dune Dogs are allowed in this park. Cats are not. They would go insane if they saw this giant litter box. Be safe out there, Cheers from Boulder, Jeff

Mound City, Isle Royale, Badlands, Great Sand Dunes, Yellowstone, Devils Tower, the Medicine Wheel, the San Luis Valley, Black Mesa, Taos, Capulin Mountain, the Ouachita Mountains, the Bay of Fundy, Copper Harbor and more. I had no clue that in the world of the metaphysical these were landmarks. They just seemed cool and interesting.

Karen saw a miracle yesterday. She was following Kelly ( 9 mo. pregnant, scheduled to deliver Tula tomorrow) down a road here in the San Luis Valley. Kelly was driving on a dirt road that has deep irrigation ditches on both side with trees and posts. Kelly hit a patch of gravel, blew out a front tire. The car fishtailed and went into a spin sliding off of the road. Where she landed was in an intersection of another road (spaced 1 mile apart) so instead of going into the ditch, possibly turning over (a common problem on the country roads out here) she ended up sitting on the other road, facing her original road with no damage or harm. Everything looked so natural that Karen drove right past and waved (thought Kelly stopped to make a phone call). 20 feet one way or another and the outcome could have been so different. This was a true demonstration of the protection of our Higher Power of which we are certainly grateful. Kelly is scheduled to check into the hospital this evening. Tula plans to chec ...

Alamosa photovoltaic power plant, is a 8.22 MWp photovoltaic power plant located in San Luis Valley, Colorado, USA. The power plant was developed by SunEdison, sells all output to Xcel Energy, and was completed in December 2007. The plant occupies 83 acres (34 ha) of land, and provided enough power to supply 1400 homes in 2008. This made it the largest producer of photovoltaic power in the United States in 2008. Colorado Xcel customers pay approximately 2% more for electricity to subsidize renewable energy projects. The plant has received some criticism, saying that the amount of land used is large in comparison to the amount of power generated.

1 yr ago. After my not so restful night, we head back to the main road. After about a 2 mile walk back to the highway, we set up at the top of a hill heading North out of Questa. We only sit for a few minutes when two Latino construction workers stop and offer us a ride to Costilla. The ride on the back of their truck was long and boring. The view we saw after the first few minutes, was the same view we saw for the next 45 or so. Flatness with Mountains in the distance. They drop us at a little store (see pic) and they head off to work. I go in and grab us some coffee and a snack. A man approaches me and ask where we are traveling to. I guess our backpacks were a dead giveaway as to our intentions on the hot sidewalk at this out of the way gas stop. We chat for awhile before he offers us a ride to Kansas. I decline. One of the three this week was the second interview with new company in Pagosa Springs. I have a second interview with another hospice client tomorrow, the lady is looking for someone for 3 hours a day everyday of the week, with possible rotating weekends, which could work well for me especially with my grandma duties as they are now. LOL The Pagosa Springs company wants to hear from me tomorrow after I find out if the client accepts me as her CNA. they would like me to also work for them in emergency situations if I am willing to do so for the clients they have in the San Luis Valley, and I am. So the Lord is working in my life right now and I am so thankful for His plans, so all will happen according to His will and I am very peaceful about how things have been "happening". Also, had a wonderful afte ...

Two things that signal that summer is almost over in the San Luis Valley. The Ski-Hi Stampede is over and the chili roasters start showing up. Love the smell of those Hatch New Mexico chilis roasting!! Try tossing in a head of garlic with a sack of chilis. Makes them smell and taste really good. Looking forward to fall. Life is good!!

UFOs, San Luis Valley a potent combination for NatGeo
Sometimes the answer to all life's questions is to drive through the San Luis Valley, with the windows down, as fast as you can go, with Van Halen's Eruption blasting as loud as the speakers can handle. Such was my experience yesterday, and it was good!
A dream flight . . . That's how I remember it. These scenes streamed by, then were lost behind me. I dared not look back or I would miss the next one, and I needed to stay in position, behind Paul, but slightly above his prop wash. There would…

Heading down to Alamosa tomorrow to visit my parents. The long drive through the San Luis Valley, with its landscape of rabbit brush, chico brush, and dark whirlwinds of sand always makes me think of a nuclear test site, like where Bruce Banner's id was released by gamma radiation, giving birth to the Hulk. Or the scenery from "La Planète Sauvage." But then there is Crestone with its stupas, temples, ashrams, and the mystery of the underground bunker known as the Zen Center. And nearby, Spanish treasure and the sipapuni.
I had an epic drive back from the Great Sand Dunes yesterday on Monarch pass, Cottonwood pass and Freemont pass. Cottowood Pass was being rebuilt (sat right next to a CDOT truck carrying a steel vault labeled 'Class 1 Explosives' for 2 hours). Freemont pass was the command post for a small forest fire near Copper Mountain (watched a helio scoop and drop water for 2 hours). San Luis Valley resovoir is empty, Taylor Mountain resovoir is down about 20% and everywhere the trees are either light green or yellow. You know how you can have a really bad day? Colorado is having a really, really bad year.
