The United States Olympic Committee will bid for the 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Games. The Committee will choose one host city from either Boston, Los Angeles, San Francisco or Washington DC. The International Olympic Committee's deadline for applicants is 15 September 2015, with a decision due in 2017. The last time the USA hosted a summer Olympics was in Atlanta in 1996, although Salt Lake City, Utah, hosted the Winter Olympics in 2002. The US is the third country after Germany and Italy to officially launch a bidding process. At an IOC meeting in Monaco earlier this month, a 40-point action plan was voted on to revamp the sporting showpiece. Potential hosts will find it easier and cheaper to bid under the "Olympic Agenda 2020" reforms and events can be held outside the host country or city. The 28-sport cap for future summer Olympics has been removed - although there will be no changes to the Rio 2016 schedule. - Former England striker Alan Shearer says Thierry Henry "could do most things a footballer ...

July 1914 For five years AT&T had wanted to link the phone lines from one side of the country to the other. They finally found the device that could help them do it: Lee De Forest's "audions," the first vacuum tubes. They placed them along the 3,400 miles of wires connecting one coast to the other. As a voice signal traveled along the wires it naturally weakened. Every time it hit an audion, the signal was boosted. The first trial took place in July of 1914, when the president of the company, Theodore Vail, spoke from one coast to the other -- his voice boosted in Pittsburgh, Omaha, and Salt Lake City along the way. But the big celebration didn't occur until January 25, 1915, at a meeting in San Francisco. Sitting in New York, Alexander Graham Bell said into the phone what he had once said decades before: "Mr. Watson, come here. I want you." But this time Watson, sitting in San Francisco, replied, "It will take me five days to get there now!" Resources: -- Crystal Fire by Michael Riordan and Lillian Hodd ...

"Church Phone" A man in Topeka, Kansas, decided to write a book about churches around the United States (America). He started by flying to San Francisco, and started working east from there. Going to a very large church, he began taking photographs and making notes. He spotted a golden telephone on the vestibule wall, and was intrigued with a sign which read, "$10,000 per minute." Seeking out the pastor, he asked about the phone and the sign. The pastor answered that the golden phone is, in fact, a direct line to Heaven, and if he pays the price, he can talk directly to God. The man thanked the pastor and continued on his way. As he continued to visit churches in Seattle, Salt Lake City, Denver, Chicago, Milwaukee, and around the United States, he found more such phones, with the same sign, and the same explanation from each pastor. Finally, the man arrived in the lovely state of Arkansas. Upon entering a church, behold: he saw the usual golden telephone. But THIS time, the sign read: "Calls: 25 cents"! F ...

Missing the freeway ride on I 80 , here is some insight on the same. August 22, 1986: The final section of the coast-to-coast I-80 (San Francisco, California, to New York City) is dedicated on the western edge of Salt Lake City, Utah, making I-80 the world's first contiguous freeway to span from the Atlantic to Pacific ocean and, at the time, the longest contiguous freeway in the world.
San Francisco psychedelic folk-rock unit It's a Beautiful Day was primarily the vehicle of virtuoso violinist David LaFlamme, born April 5, 1941 in New Britain, Connecticut but raised in Salt Lake City, Utah. After beginning his musical education at age five, LaFlamme later served as a soloist with the Utah Symphony, following an army stint by settling in the Bay Area in 1962. There he immersed himself in the local underground music scene, jamming alongside the likes of Jerry Garcia and Janis Joplin; after his short-lived Electric Chamber Orchestra splintered, LaFlamme also co-founded an early incarnation of Dan Hicks & His Hot Licks before assembling It's a Beautiful Day in mid-1967. The group -- which originally included LaFlamme's keyboardist wife Linda, vocalist Pattie Santos, guitarist Hal Wagenet, bassist Mitchell Holman, and drummer Val Fuentes -- issued its self-titled debut LP on Columbia in 1969, scoring their biggest hit with the haunting FM radio staple "White Bird." Linda LaFlamme left It's a ...

Great News for Utah! AS THE OVERALL U.S. ECONOMY CONTINUED TO RECOVER FROM THE RECESSION IN 2013, UTAH EXPERIENCED A YEAR OF STRONG EXPANSION. Improvements were made to the unemployment rate which dropped by 0.8 percentage points to 4.3%, even as the workforce expanded. forbes.com shows Salt Lake City leading the nation, and Provo-Orem at number 7 for cities with the most new technology jobs created from 2010 through 2013 per 10,000 people. A study conducted by EMSI in the San Francisco market, shows that tech sector jobs have a multiplier of 4.35, meaning, for every tech job created, an additional 3.35 jobs are created elsewhere in the economy. This tech jobs multiplier effect has helped Utah through recovery, stabilization, and now expansion. In addition, Utah continues to receive national recognition for its stability, pro-business environment and high quality of life: • Ranked 2nd by Forbes in “States that will Boom over the next 10 Years” • Ranked 3rd by Forbes in “Best States to do Busines ...

LITIGATION & RESOLUTION A handful of bands who participated on the 2013 PI tour, have received no dvd or perhaps have received a dvd with unacceptable video pixelation due to a faulty down converter. This problem has been isolated to the following shows. Phoenix, Las Vegas, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Portland, Salt Lake City and Denver. Following months of deliberation, DEPro has accepted responsibility for the snafu and has offered a settlement which we are expected to receive in the next couple of weeks at which time we will contact all affected bands and issue rebate checks. Once again, sincere apologies for the problem and more importantly for leaving everyone hanging, but seeing as how potential lawsuits were involved, we had to be very careful regarding what was said in public forums. Now that we have a plan for resolution in place, all those affected should expect resolve by the end of January. Questions, comments and concerns may be addressed to my attention. People are posting 25 things people don't know about them. Here's mine: 1. My middle name is Allan. I spelled it "Allen" until my Air Force recruiter told me that my birth certificate said "Allan." Then, when I confronted my mom about the error, she said, "I did a few drugs back then!" 2. I have a broken belly-button. While skating, apparently I fell in a way that tore the tissue. So, now my belly-button looks like it's trying to wink at you. It's half innie and half outtie. SERIOUSLY!!! 3. I've lived in Bossier City, LA; Ft. Worth, TX; Newmarket, England; Spokane, WA; Dallas, TX; Salt Lake City, UT; San Diego, CA; Fallbrook, CA; Costa Mesa, CA; Bellevue, WA; Seattle, WA; San Jose, CA; San Francisco, CA, & Coeur d' Alene, ID. Consequently, I think I recognize someone in EVERY crowd of people. Plus, looking like Opie Taylor, someone in EVERY crowd thinks they recognize me… 4. I've been a 40 year old in a kid's body my whole life. Physically, I've always acted like I'm 17 and invincible. Mentally, I've al ...
Sara Zarr (born October 3, 1970) is an American writer. She was raised in San Francisco, and now lives in Salt Lake City, Utah with her husband. Her first novel, Story of a Girl, was a 2007 National Book Award finalist. She is also the author of Sweethearts and Once Was Lost. All three are published by Little, Brown. Born in Cleveland, Ohio and raised in San Francisco, she earned a degree in communications from San Francisco State University. Zarr grew up as an Evangelical Christian, a faith with which she still associates though she lives in a predominately Mormon community. Her first three manuscripts were never published, but after winning the Utah Arts Council best young-adult novel of 2003, she was able to find an agent who successfully sold Story of a Girl as the first of a two-book deal. Inspired by the kidnapping of Elizabeth Smart and Zarr's Christian roots, Once Was Lost addresses issues of faith, identity and home. The title comes from the hymn Amazing Grace written by John Newton. While the c ...

Anyone else excited for the new Bus system in Fort Collins? It is going to be sweet, now Fort Collins has probably 155,000-160,000 people and has become a solidly mid size city. Fort Collins isn't far off now from Salt Lake City's 189,000 people. Not a big city, but getting to be "Mid Size" now I'd say. So the bus system is going through a major upgrade with new aerodynamic articulated buses called MAX, they run straight from Downtown near the city government buildings, through CSU, and straight past Harmony. I love city infrastructure and planning/engineering of urban development!! I'm like a kid waiting for christmas. Interesting too Fort Collins is low density to the point where it is physically larger than Miami proper, Boston, and San Francisco. And about the same size as Saint Louis or Washington DC in physical size. There is alot of green space and suburban housing outside northern Fort Collins, and most buildings outside the Northern end is pretty low density. The city is developing high rise Loft ...

On our way to St. Louis for a gig after spending a surreal night in the middle of Kansas and an amazing night before that camping and hiking in the Rocky Mountains with Black Bears and mountain lions after going to a gig in Boulder, Colorado. The night before that was in the middle of the desert (near Salt Lake City) and the night before that was in an incredible place-Lake Tahoe is absolutely stunning and I had the most blissful morning swim in Lake Tahoe...before that was San Francisco and before that was Santa Barbara I think...so many different places, people, petrol stations, loos, landscapes, deserts, roads, mountains, lakes, coast, camp sites, hotels, homes, music, fun, disagreements, challenges, special memorable moments, smells, bars, restaurants, gigs

When you think of *** friendly cities, you think of places like San Francisco or New York. The LAST city you might think of is Salt Lake City, Utah, where *** marriage is on pace to be legalized sometime around the year 2547, Which is why this is kind of surprising: According to the U.S. Census Bureau, Salt Lake City has THE highest rate of *** PARENTS for any city in the country. More than 25% of *** or *** couples in Salt Lake City have a child. That's the highest rate in the country. In other words, there are probably FEWER *** couples in Salt Lake City than there are in a place like New York. But it seems the *** couples who ARE there really want families. So, if they only had four *** couples and one has a kid, there's your 25% rate. The other major cities with the highest rate of *** parents are Virginia Beach, Virginia . . . Detroit, Michigan . . . and Memphis, Tennessee. In smaller cities, about HALF of the *** couples in both Visalia and Porterville, California have children. And the ST ...

I am in charge of hosting and coordinating a handful of co-workers who are flying in from Salt Lake City and San Francisco at the end of the month. I'm working on getting them rooms at the The Clarendon Hotel, but I also need to find a venue downtown to take them and many other co-workers from our Mesa office out to dinner. Usually this would be easy for me, I know and love many downtown restaurants... but the tricky part is that many of them do not drink and are somewhat sensitive to the culture that goes along with drinking. So... my question... What downtown restaurants have something to offer that doesn't revolve around drinking / their drinks. What restaurants are impressive through other means, such as live music or environment? Cherry Blossom? Postino's? Pita Jungle? What else?

I heard he's playing in Nome Alaska at the "Igaloo"--anybody heard of it?? Limited seating of course--Smile--When it was all said and done, that concert and warm weather turned into "The Definition of Insanity ...
Like most Americans at the time, many Mormons held racist views, and exclusion from priesthood was not the only discrimination practiced toward black people. In the late 1800s blacks living in Cache Valley were forcibly relocated to Ogden and Salt Lake City. In the 1950s, the San Francisco mission office took legal action to prevent black families from moving into the church neighborhood.[41] In 1965, a black man living in Salt Lake City, Daily Oliver, described how – as a boy – he was excluded from an LDS-led boy scout troop because they did not want blacks in their building.[42] Mormon apostle Mark E. Petersen describes a black family that tried to join the LDS church: "[some white church members] went to the Branch President, and said that either the [black] family must leave, or they would all leave. The Branch President ruled that [the black family] could not come to church meetings. It broke their hearts."[43] Until the 1970s hospitals with connections to the LDS church, including LDS Hospital, ...

August 29 in History: 1877 Brigham Young, the second president of the Mormon Church, died in Salt Lake City at age 76. 1944 American troops marched down the Champs Elysees in Paris as the French capital continued to celebrate its liberation from the Nazis. 1957 Sen. Strom Thurmond, D-S.C., ended the longest filibuster in Senate history after talking for 24 hours, 18 minutes against a civil rights bill. 1966 The Beatles performed their last concert, at Candlestick Park in San Francisco. 2008 Republican John McCain picked Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin to be his vice-presidential running mate. 2009 Funeral services were held in Boston for Sen. Edward M. Kennedy, who was eulogized by President Barack Obama; hours later, Kennedy's remains were buried at Arlington National Cemetery outside Washington. 2011 In a sign Moammar Gadhafi had lost grip on his country, his wife and three of his children fled Libya to neighboring Algeria.
Mitt's great-great-grandfather was Parley P. Pratt, a rather interesting figure in Mormon history. Pratt was murdered in Alma, Arkansas a bit north-east of Van Buren. I lived in Van Buren in the 1940's and recently visited this charming little town where I spent part of my childhood. I certainly would have visited Pratt's grave site in Alma if I had known of its existence last May though I was surprised to read that when Pratt's family tried to move him to a cemetery in Salt Lake City in 2008 no human remains were found. Not sure which members of his family tried to bring him to Salt Lake - it's a huge clan of descendants that Pratt left behind. He had 12 wives, 30 children, 266 grand children and his living descendants are estimated at between 30 to 50 thousand souls including Jon Huntsman and Mitt Romney. Wow. Pratt's 12th wife was a woman named Eleanor McLean. Pratt converted her to Mormonism in San Francisco but not her husband Hector McLean who didn't take well to Pratt's ruining his marriage. Not ge ...
My Uncle Phil passed away and he was a powerful presence in my life. I recently had shoulder surgery and will not be able to attend the Funeral and Wake this weekend. My thoughts and prayers are with my cousins Tim, Caitlin, Patrick and Michael, their spouses and the 11 children they have among them. My Wonderful Treasure of a sister Colleen will be going to Ogden Utah in support and to Celebrate Phil's life and spend time with the family. I am looking forward to hearing the stories and seeing the photos of all present. Rest in Peace Uncle Phil. Caitlin, Phil's daughter has written this obituary which really says it all. Philip Stephen Kenny Phil quietly closed his book Wednesday, August 8, 2012. He was born October 30, 1927 in Ogden. A 1945 Ogden High School graduate, he served in the U.S. Army’s 11th Airborne Division, Japan, for two years. He attended St. Mary’s College in San Francisco but returned to Salt Lake City to finish his undergraduate work and affiliate with Sigma Chi Fraternity. He ...

Sanctuary city Several US cities have instructed their own law enforcement personnel and other city employees not to notify or cooperate with the federal government when they become aware of illegal immigrants living within their jurisdiction. Many cities, including Washington, D.C., New York City NYC, Los Angeles, Chicago, San Francisco, San Diego, Austin, Salt Lake City, Dallas, Detroit, Houston, Jersey City, Minneapolis, Miami, Denver, Aurora, Colorado, Baltimore, Seattle, Portland, Oregon, Portland, Maine, and Senath, Missouri, have become "sanctuary cities", having adopted ordinances banning police from asking people about their immigration status. Most of these cities claim that the benefit illegal immigrants bring to their city outweigh the costs. Opponents say the measures violate federal law as the cities are in effect creating their own immigration policy, an area of law which only Congress has authority to alter.
