Robert Hall Weir was born on October 16,1947 in San Francisco, California. He had trouble in school because of undiagnosed dyslexia. On New Year's Eve, 1963, 16-year-old Weir and another underage friend were wandering the back alleys of Palo Alto, looking for a club that would admit them, when they heard banjo music. They followed the music to its source, Dana Morgan's Music Store. Here, a young Jerry Garcia, oblivious to the date, was waiting for his students to arrive. Weir and Garcia decided to form a band. Originally called Mother McCree's Uptown Jug Champions, the band was later renamed The Warlocks and eventually the Grateful Dead. Weir played rhythm guitar and sang a portion of the lead vocals through all of the Dead's 30-year career. His unique guitar style is strongly influenced by the hard bop pianist McCoy Tyner and he has cited artists as diverse as John Coltrane, the Rev. Gary Davis, and Igor Stravinsky as influences. Weir participated in the various reformations of the Grateful Dead's member ...

HP mulls legal action on Autonomy fraud claims 20 JAN 2014ADMIN hpHewlett-Packard said it has made decisions on how to address shareholders’ securities fraud claims over its $8.8 billion writedown for its purchase of British software company Autonomy, but wants six more weeks to decide what legal course to pursue. US District Judge Charles Breyer in San Francisco had on September 6 given Hewlett-Packard until Friday to vote on recommendations by a committee of independent directors. The committee was to advise whether the Palo Alto, California-based personal computer and printer company should try to have claims against various officers and directors dismissed, or join the claims in a bid to recoup its losses. In a Friday court filing, Hewlett-Packard said its board has reviewed the recommendations and “made decisions with respect to the actions that it deems to be in the best interests of the company and its shareholders.” It nonetheless said it has agreed with the plaintiffs’ lawyers to keep the ...

A look around the U.S. finds towns and cities busily regulating anything and everything: Plastic bags will be banned in Los Angeles after the first of the year. They're already banned in San Jose, Calif. Austin, Texas, bans both plastic and paper bags from grocery stores. San Francisco tried to ban fast-food meals that came with toys. Forest Park, Ga., in 2011 made it illegal to breastfeed in public a child older than 2. After public protest, the ban was lifted. Cocoa, Fla., makes it illegal to wear baggy pants on city streets. Palo Alto, Calif., makes it illegal to live in your car. And under Section 63-19-2430 of the South Carolina code, it's illegal for a minor under the age of 18 to play a pinball machine.

Why do Universities in the USA cost so much? By Giovanni Carlini Having a walk through Berkeley University, San Francisco, California, comparing the 30,000$ annual university fee with the 35K of Flagstaff University in Arizona, which also comprises food and accommodation, a question arises on why are these costs so absurd? To add another university in the comparison, Stanford, in Palo Alto, south of San Francisco, asks for 60K a year just in fees. In Italy instead, for the private Catholic University in Milan, you pay 3500 euros of fees, whilst Bocconi University requires around 12,000 euros of fees, while a master degree costs 35,000 euros. With these cost the right to education has been abolished, is it worth spending all this money? A year at Berkeley costs 21,000 euros, 4 years of study would amount to 80,000 euros plus accommodation, food and other expenses. Is education’s value 160,000 Euros in 4 years? (with Stanford, double the cost) Are universities all the same? Definitely not! Living many ye ...

I moved to California and have been staying 12 days at Santa Clara. I went Monterey, Stockton, Cupertino, Mountain View, Palo Alto, Menlo Park and San Francisco. A lot of places must be mentioned. These photos are the highlight.
“City Of Angels was a very personal song, obviously, about a specific place: Los Angeles. But it could be … well, when I was a younger kid, it was New York City. That was the place where I went to make my dreams come true, at that time to be a painter, an artist. I was in art school and New York was the place where you went to makes those things come alive. And as I got older, I started studying film and I came out to Los Angeles. But it could be Paris, it could be Shanghai, it could be San Francisco, Palo Alto, anywhere. A place where you go to realize yourself and your dreams.” — Jared Leto about “City of Angels” - notes from VyRT *sonya*

A Number of Bay Area Housing Markets Setting New Price Records Home prices all across the country are bouncing back sharply from their recessionary lows. In fact, the latest S&P/Case-Shiller report found prices in major cities were up nearly 11 percent in March from the same period in 2012, the biggest year-over-year increase since April 2006. NPR's All Things Considered, in its report on the rise in home prices, said that while this is obviously good news for homeowners, there's still a long way to get back to the market's peak prices of the mid-2000s. But as it turns out, a number of Bay Area cities have already bounced all the way back and are setting new price highs. The strongest price gains have come in San Francisco and the Peninsula, where a severe shortage of listings and a great number of ardent buyers have pushed prices past previous records. In addition to San Francisco, Palo Alto, Cupertino, Menlo Park and Burlingame have all surpassed their 2007 highs. The biggest increase was in Palo Alto, ...

"For years it’s been an open secret – young entrepreneurs & tech-savvy folks who work for the big Silicon Valley conglomerates have been living in San Francisco while commuting down the 101.  After all, does anyone really relocate to N. Cal to live in Mountain View?  Now it appears that many of these people also did not move to the Bay Area to commute.  They’ve started companies in SF proper – not 30 or 40 miles S. on the 101 freeway in Palo Alto or San Jose, traditional epicenters of what’s typically considered S.Valley.  According to the SF Sunday Examiner, SF has been “beating out S. Bay cities for VC, boosting key sectors & creating a hotbed of growing firms.” Software co's, social media, gaming, green tech & biotech are leading the pack of industry sectors attracting the VC $.  Good news for the entire innovative tech industry in the Bay Area (which includes S.Valley & SF): “investors poured nearly $3B into Bay Area co's in the past 3 months – a 100% increase from the 1st quart ...

I lived 15 years in the Bay Area, so I was excited to hear that American Girl is opening a San Francisco store! Although I was a little confused that they are actually putting the San Francisco store in Palo Alto. It is a neighboring city, but still Palo Alto, not SF. Have they done that with other stores? BTW, I've spent some time shopping in Palo Alto and there are some really nice places so I'm sure it will be a great location just a few minutes from SF! Doll Diaries has the scoop.

Super Bowl XIX Part 1: January 20, 1985 in Palo Alto, CA had the makings of a classic. 15-1 San Francisco against 5000 yard passer Dan Marino and the Miami Dolphins. Think Nerds Have No Game? Some Reasons Nerds Make Great Partners. San Francisco Examiner When you think about Silicon Valley usually one of two visions come to mind; 1) money and 2) nerds. Some may ever argue that nerds and geeks are the ones responsible for putting Silicon Valley on the map as a technological "hot spot", and there is even a book aptly named Geek Silicon Valley: The Inside Guide to Palo Alto, Stanford, Menlo Park, Mountain View, Santa Clara, Sunnyvale, San Jose, San Francisco. Many people use the words geek and nerd interchangeably, but there is usually one major distinction between the two. According to Carrie Tucker, author of I Love Geeks, a "nerd" is often a term given to someone who is highly intellectual and knows a lot of diverse information, whereas a "geek" is sometimes known to focus in on a single obsession and then study it in minute detail. Sure, geeks & nerds might not have the best game in town, but they don't necessarily need it either. Here are a few reasons that gee ...
For the 47th straight year, there won't be a home team in the Super Bowl. This is not exactly true; when San Francisco made the Super Bowl in January 1985, the game was played in Palo Alto on the Stanford campus. Close enough to be a home game, just not in the home stadium. Ditto the Rams in Pasadena in 1980. But the Saints losing for the eighth time this year means New Orleans will host the game this year and have a chip on its shoulder with the homeboys not playing. As Mike Florio of said Sunday night, "The commissioner better have his Popemobile when he goes to the Super Bowl this year." He's right: New Orleans will be an unfriendly place, and that's putting it mildly, for commissioner Roger Goodell, with Saints fans certain he went too far in the punishment over the bounty scandal. (In the next few days, we'll see if the supposed neutral appeals officer hearing the player appeals, ex-commissioner Paul Tagliabue, cuts the four players some slack.) Anyway, I thought interim coach Joe ...

Chemeketa! Early history Chemeketa Park was developed in 1925 and 1926 by J.B. Balcomb, a civil engineer from Palo Alto who had acquired a 63-acre (250,000 m2) orchard in the Santa Cruz Mountains. An advertisement in the Sunday, June 20, 1926 edition of the San Jose Mercury Herald lists a "pre-opening sale" of lots "as low as $50.00." Initially, lots were used for vacation cabins. The mountain communities of Chemeketa Park and Redwood Estates, etc., were considered too remote, and too difficult to access, for year-round living. Lots were advertised to Bay Area families as a summer retreat, far from the stress of city living in San Francisco or San Jose. By the mid-1930s, with the improvement of roads and water systems, many residents began occupying their cabins year-round and combining smaller lots into larger parcels. The Balcomb Family and Chemeketa ParkJ.B. Balcomb was killed in an automobile accident in the summer of 1927. His widow and son continued the sale of lots at Chemeketa Park. Balcombs conti ...

Just got back from Palo Alto, now in SOMA District of San Francisco and walking over to right now. Cant wait. Kia Ora. /jim
I’m generally a San Francisco Giants fan but have to tip my hat to Billy Beane’s boy’s across the bay in Oakland. Way to go Athletics! 13 games down in June and then to come back and win the AL West on the last day of the regular season. Talk about a “Money Ball” Story… Okay so going anywhere near the San Francisco this weekend would be an insane adventure…The Giant’s will be playing downtown at AT&T Park, The 49ers will be playing at Candlestick on Sunday, The A’s, by winning the West, are now playing at the Oakland Coliseum, The America’s Cup qualification races are going on out on the Bay, The Navy is in for Fleet Week meaning the Blue Angles are performing overhead on both Saturday and Sunday (Go Navy)... but wait it gets better…Cal is hosting UCLA at the new Memorial Stadium in Berkeley on Saturday afternoon and Stanford is hosting Arizona down in Palo if that wasn’t enough to bring the entire Bay Area transportation system to a grinding halt, San Francisco has d ...
Its my pleasure to announce that I will be composing songs for the upcoming play by Naatak - Naatak presents "Mowgli and I" (in San Francisco & Palo Alto) This is a rendition of Jungle Book and I have been asked to compose Broadway style musical of genre of Lion King. Pismo Beach. Mission? Off-Roading, ATVing, Jet-skiing, Body boarding. San Francisco. Mission? Rally in Central Square. Eat bomb food. Do random stuff. Palo Alto. Mission? BURN THE FARM. The second Weekender of the year - and second in the last week and a half - has arrived. Load up Rocky and the SUV - let's hit the road up to Northern California!
Most of you knew I was going to the San Francisco 49ers vs. Detroit Lions game Sunday night at the stick. Got great seats. Now I'm going to the USC Trojans at Stanford Cardinals in Palo Alto the night before. It's going to be a rough weekend full of good games.
Ok. Scott Mc Kenzie. Did not want do write about him yesterday. San Francisco, Flowers, Hair you know. He sang about the Hashbury of the 60s, which already died in the 60s. Came back to life in the 90s. I was very lucky to enjoy the "Laughter, Love and Music" concert for Bill Graham with more than 300.00 people (unknown to many)- and a lot did not only look like a hippie, they did behave and smell like a hippie! That was in the early 90s. Even the cars parked in the area where authentic and you can still find them at the coastline from Eureka down to Big Sur. Since Ben&Jerry's has a shop right at Haight/Ashbury and a lot of the shops which have been established in the 80s (second wave authentic shops i would say) are gone and replaced by chains the hippie-ish scene Dead Again there but i lives strongly in the whole valley (Santa Cruz, the Hills, even Mtn View etc.) I heard Scotts song once while approaching SFO airport looking at the Bay Area city lights of Fremont, Sunnyvale, Palo Alto ... That has been ...
Good Morning, Condifans 36,743 @ 0300 PDST THE 28TH OF AUGUST, 2012 Two major events are taking place on this day; In the east the Republican Convention in Tampa, and in the west the final curtain will fall on the historic Caesar's Restaurant in San Francicso. At the former, we should have the opportunity to rub shoulders with Condoleezza Rice for perhaps a few magic moments. At the latter we should be surrounded by friends from our career on the San Francisco waterfront who are going to have a Last Luncheon there. The San Fran trip would include a de rigeur visit to Palo Alto. What an irony, Condoleezza in Tampa and we in Palo Alto on the same day! THAT RUSSIAN SUB IN THE GULF. We are delighted to note that the Pentagon reads this column, as they are vigorously denying the incursion. The Russian Defence Ministry neither affirmed nor denied the report, saying the information on the movements of Russian subnarines around the world is classified. Source: IANS/RIA Novosti. A "Bay Tour" of San Francisco starting at Half Moon Bay (KHAF) and ending in Palo Alto (KPAO) in a 1970's Cessna 152. The weather was a little windy that day...
am so sorry to have disappeared so suddenly and completely. Honestly, it has been all I could do to hang on each day. Following my post about our revised itinerary, Maddy and I spent our last night at Santa Barbara. The next day we visited three missions (pictures to come) and ended up as planned at Tripp's aunt and uncle's in Palo Alto. It was late and I was pretty exhausted. While pulling myself up the stairs to my bedroom, I felt a sharp pain rip across my left chest. The next morning, it was just a little sore, but my entive left chest and underarm had turned black and purple. After coming home, I learned I had torn my pectoral muscle and probably lost a pint of blood, which explains why the next day I was unable to do anything at all. Maddy drove us to San Francisco, where we were fortunate to find a room 1 1/2 blocks from the Opera House, where we had tickets to see The Magic Flute. I just could not move, so Maddy went by herself. In the meantime, my pain was not getting any better, so ever ...

We used to feed the Flower Children in 1967 (and there were thousand of them), on what we grew in our backyards and little peninsula farms south of San Francisco. I was 11 years old, but I grew tomatoes and potatoes like my grandfather, turned over the lawn in the back yard in Palo Alto. My Mom would take me to Los Altos to a meditation group with a Zen priest from Japan, named Shunryu Suzuki. I went with some teenage neighbor girls to Monterey Pop. But mostly we just grew beans on the fence, and took them and the potatoes and tomatoes North of San Francisco, and in the Panhandle of Golden Gate Park. That's how you made Digger Bean Soup. The people fed the people.

The beautiful Moraga Street Steps (off 16th ave,) in San Francisco is as fun and creative as San Fran is as a place.. Palo Alto home of Stanford U is the sanest community in all my travels.. Its' Energy is like these steps. The reality of San Fran is the reality of every city in USA.. It is 100% dysfunctional.. People dying needless deaths.. Drugs violence rules.. Even in Santa Barbara CA we have gang kids killing each other in broad day light in very rich nice clean streets on Santa Barbara Main drag State St... In San Fran the mission of San Fran is boarded up as this mission area of San Fran ( a tiny city ) is all homeless 10-25 yrs old strung out on drugs sex etc No one works to help these young people they just try to suffocate them out... Humans are NOT rats and deserve so much more in health care, welfare, support from a govt that spend $trillions on killing people around the world... Pentagon and Defense Dept while Not having enough money to take care nor help its'own people.. You do not live in a ...
in the summer of 1986, i was 12, we just moved to Palo Alto in the Silicon Valley, my parents took me to the *** parade in San Francisco, the scene of 500 Harley Davidson female riders is one of the strongest ones i have from that day, i also remember my own ignorance, standing there. today *** parade will pass underneath my house, i am so proud of all my friends of being proud of who they are, the families they created, the love they share, i just hope our "community" will accept yours fully and give you the full rights you deserve, have a lovely day.
Just back from a whirlwind trip to the West coast. First stop Seattle and a visit with Joan and family. Enjoyed the Space Needle, Pikes Place, a "Duck" ride through the city and into Lake Union, and even a bike ride through wine country. Our 3 granddaughters become more precious by the day. On to Palo Alto to see Doris. Loved her cozy cottage. Helped her plant a vegetable garden. Spent one whole day in San Francisco, another in Monterey/Carmel, and once again rode bikes through the Sonoma Valley wine country. Of course did a little tasting. Doris is a great tour guide. Lovely trip but good to be home.

My *** s Kitchen application cover letter... well, what 51 year old fat chef at the end of his career would not want to work with Gordon Ramsey? I mean come on, the real question is, can a non tattoo'd covered male chef these days actually compete with the likes of ghetto influenced crack smoking counterparts who crave culinary stardom? Is there a place on the team for a chef who not only can cook, but can make dead fish smell as good as Mitt Romney? I was raised by a pack of culinary wild dogs in the wild's of New Jersey. At the tender age of 20, i moved to the San Francisco Bay Area to pursue my career. Palo Alto the capital of Silicon Valley ( and were not talking the type of valley that Pamela Anderson used to carry) was the mecca of fine dinning and corporate greed, i felt at home there. I landed a wonderful job with an old retired mobster running his restaurant that catered to only the CEO's and such of the computer industry( yes Steve Jobs used to be a regular in our private dinning rooms, and yes ...

Quick trip to San Francisco/LA sounds more glamorous if you don't know I'll never leave Palo Alto & a meeting room near John Wayne Airport.
new week, San Francisco, Palo Alto, Redwood City, Livingston as well as Modesto on the schedule of some sort.
Started my day in San Jose, then Palo Alto, to Redwood City & San Francisco! It's beautiful in the Bay!
We had a wonderful day yesterday for Willy's birthday. Got fantastic Caribbean take-out at the BackAYard in Palo Alto, bought some rose bushes (planting them today) along the coast, picked strawberries next to the ocean, saw the sun set from Half Moon Bay, saw the "super moon" rise from Twin Peaks, popped in to say hello to David's parents at their house, started to make a strawberry pie at home last night, but decided to wait until today for that. (So Willy's birthday caked ended up being blueberry pancakes with candles on them, and fresh strawberries!) Not sure Willy totally got the import of it all, but wow was it a perfect day. And David certainly knows how to organize a "staycation" day -- although when you live in San Francisco, it's never a problem to find fantastic places to visit. I need to post some photos -- but I can't find my camera cable to hook up to laptop. :-( May have to run to Best Buy.
For San Francisco Bay Area residents enjoying the Doyle Drive closure for the Golden Gate Bridge, just remember that Memorial Day brings the Dumbarton Bridge Closure between Newark and Palo Alto.
all I wanna know is . . . . Who's commin with me :P WHAT IS THE PROPOSAL? On January 7, 2012, the Philadelphia General Assembly came to consensus on a proposal from the Philadelphia Committee of Correspondence to form a national working group dedicated to conceiving of, and implementing a strategy towards, a National Gathering of the Occupy Movement. This National Gathering Working Group (NGWG) has met seven times via conference call with people from across the country using the InterOccupy system to debate the merits and discuss the logistics of convening a mass convergence of the Movement in one place at one time. Participants have included Occupy activists from Sacramento, Philadelphia, Minneapolis, Asheville, Missoula, Phoenix, Las Vegas, New York City, Houston, Los Angeles, San Diego, Santa Cruz, Palo Alto, Denver, DC, Oakland, Albany, Schenectady, Delaware, Alabama, Chicago, Tampa, San Francisco, Boston, New Hampshire, and Kalamazoo, as well as Canada. After several weeks discussing several location ...
