Weather on this Day in HISTORY: 1852 - Between January 15th and February 24th a total of 1378 railroad cars were drawn by horses across the frozen Susquehanna River to engines waiting at Havre De Grace, MD. (The Weather Channel) 1932 - Up to two inches of snow whitened the Los Angeles basin of California. The Los Angeles Civic Center reported an inch of snow, and even the beaches of Santa Monica were whitened with snow, in what proved to be a record snowstorm for Los Angeles. (David Ludlum) (The Weather Channel) 1952 - A six day snowstorm was in progress in the western U.S. The storm produced 44 inches of snow at Marlette Lake NV, 52 inches at Sun Valley ID, and 149 inches at Tahoe CA, establishing single storm records for each of those three states. In addition, 24 hour snowfall totals of 22 inches at the University of Nevada, and 26 inches at Arco ID, established records for those two states. San Francisco A jumbled collage of colorful neighborhoods and beautiful views, San Francisco draws those free-spirited types who have an eye for edgy art, a taste for imaginative cuisine and a zeal for adventure. It's really not surprising that songwriter Tony Bennett left his heart here: The city boasts jaw-dropping sights, world-class cuisine, cozy cafes and plenty of booming nightlife venues — there's no shortage of ways to stay busy here. Spend an hour or two sunning yourself alongside sea lions on the bay, admiring the views of the city from Twin Peaks, or strolling along the Marina. And for the quintessential San Franciscan experience, enjoy a ride on a cable car. Often described as Los Angeles' more refined northern cousin, cool and compact San Francisco takes the big-city buzz exuded by its southern counterpart and melds it with a sense of small-town charm. Here, you'll discover a mish-mash of culture flourishing throughout San Francisco's many vibrant quarters. Follow the crowds to the touristy ...

Look who had a fun doggie field trip yesterday to the dog park? Angie, Hallie, Sarah, Isabella, Felix and Simon! All of these wigglebutts are currently looking for their forever homes at Camp Cocker Rescue (in California). Help spread the word because we also need foster homes that are either in the Los Angeles general area, or the San Francisco general Bay Area. We need four more foster homes to get our dogs out of boarding so we can start saving some more new shelter doggies. Go to CampCocker.com to read about the entire adoption process and submit your application online (the foster app is the same as the adoption app, and foster homes are screened with the same high standards). Spread the word, let's get some of these doggies out of boarding and rescue some new ones for 2015! Thank you so much for supporting our little rescue.

HISTORY: The first years of the Rotary Club The first Rotary Club was formed when attorney Paul P. Harris called together a meeting of three business acquaintances in downtown Chicago, at Harris' friend Gustave E. Loehr's office in the Unity Building on Dearborn Street on February 23, 1905.[5] In addition to Harris and Loehr (a mining engineer and freemason[6]), Silvester Schiele (a coal merchant), and Hiram E. Shorey (a tailor) were the other two who attended this first meeting. The members chose the name Rotary because initially they rotated subsequent weekly club meetings to each other's offices, although within a year, the Chicago club became so large it became necessary to adopt the now-common practice of a regular meeting place. The next four Rotary Clubs were organized in cities in the western United States, beginning with San Francisco, then Oakland, Los Angeles, and Seattle. The National Association of Rotary Clubs in America was formed in 1910. On 22 February 1911, the first meeting of the Rotar ...
California in the train business. In 2008, the voters narrowly approved a bond measure to build a High Speed Rail system between Los Angeles and San Francisco for $10 billion dollars. Or at least that's what most of us thought. The promise of matching funds from the Federal Government made it all seem reasonable. The total cost would be, maybe up to $40 Billion when completed, that's only another $10 Billion from us Californians plus $20 Billion of matching Federal money. After the election, the figures magically doubled to $80 Billion and talk of even more. When they got to $120 Billion, the squawk factor got it pushed down by $30 Billion by making them use part of the old (slow) existing track. (So much for the High Speed part). The World Bank estimates this project at $110 Billion, the California HSR claims they can do it for ONLY $69 Billion. Matching Federal funds, that were needed to stimulate the economy in the years following the recession are far less likely to materialize now that we seem to be ...

“Your Lights are Shinning Brightly.” NASA and NOAA have released some amazing photos of just how brightly Christmas (and Ramadan) lights shine. Miguel Romàn and others gathered their data from the NOAA/NASA Suomi National Polar-orbiting Partnership satellite. After looking at 70 U.S. cities in 2012 and 2013, they found night time lights in suburban areas increased in brightness by as much as 50 percent, while urban areas increase by a little less, between 20 and 30 percent. The researchers focused mainly on West Coast cities in the United States, such as Los Angeles and San Francisco, because cities with heavy snowfall cause light to reflect up, making it seem brighter than it actually is. They also looked at cities in Puerto Rico, known for their long and boisterous Christmas celebrations. Interestingly, they also saw a large increase in Cairo during Ramadan. They actually discovered the holiday phenomenon while trying to explain data discrepencies for light coming out of Cairo. There is a lot of va ...

It is 11:26 PM here. I live half way between Los Angeles and San Francisco. Just returned from an evening stroll. On my walk,I was stopped by a middle aged white man, driving a pick up truck. He asked "can I help you?" I replied "pardon?" He further stated that I "walked over his driveway." I answered, "I live here." (Same complex). He apologised and drove off. It is very dangerous to live in this godamned country. I am certain that if I were Black, he would have further confronted me.

Before I go to sleep I just want to thank The San Francisco Bay Area for 26 years of a career that I'd only dreamed of. My dreams were dashed and minimized in Los Angeles. Always getting rejected on things that had nothing to do with my talent. Never feeling good enough or attractive enough. Well tonight sitting in LA amongst all that beauty and glamour, I felt fulfilled and *** proud of myself for having the courage to leave. And the good sense to realize this thing is about the art and not the industry. Who knows I might have to stay here but I can tell you this I come back with vast experience and the ability to make things happen for myself.

That's on the 24th, then hopefully right after, and if all goes well, I will be chasing Turkey's by Thanksgiving. I am now home in NYC for two beautiful days and Sunday morning head back to San Francisco for 'The Art of Active Networking' at The Box SF and then to Los Angeles for meetings and to do my event on the 19th then back to SF on the 21st and to NYC on the 23rd. In the last 12 days I got to meet over 350 people, give two speeches, see friends that went back to my college days, sit with my family and wait as my Father went through major open Heart Surgery, say goodbye to a dear, talented creative giant and one of my biggest mentors and do some beautiful design work for our Clients. In all this I am re ...
How Racism Created America's Chinatowns Braden Goyette 11/11/2014 Last month, a San Francisco tour guide was caught in a racist rant about the city's Chinatown, berating residents for "eating turtles and frogs" and for not assimilating into American culture. There's an irony to these grievances, considering that Chinatowns in the U.S. sprang up in large part because of anti-Chinese racism, and because of legal barriers that prevented assimilation. At their height, there were dozens of Chinatowns, in big metro areas like Los Angeles and Chicago and in smaller cities like Cleveland and Oklahoma City. You might think of these neighborhoods as places to eat dim sum and buy knickknacks, but the reasons they initially formed are much more complex -- and political. Chinese immigrants congregated together in part because of intense anti-Chinese attacks. Seeking economic opportunity during the Gold Rush and the building of the transcontinental railroad, the first wave of Chinese immigrants arrived in the U.S. in . ...

Farewell America How French Intelligence Wrote a Book about the Kennedy Assassination William Turner He was slight and fidgety, with a wispy mustache and fingertips yellowed by countless Gitanes. He called himself Herve Lamarr, but in the twilight world of intelligence that may not have been the name on his baptismal certificate. The Frenchman had called the day before, long distance, saying he had to see me. It was September 1968, three months after the assassination of Robert F. Kennedy in Los Angeles. I was familiar with Lamarr's project: a book titled Farewell America, which contended that the assassination of John F. Kennedy at Dallas on Nov. 22 was a conspiracy that robbed America of her future. As we sat in the coffee shop of the Fairmont Hotel on top of San Francisco's Nob Hill, I wondered what the great urgency was. Lamarr chitchatted earnestly, but had no punch line. I introduced Lamarr to Jim Rose, who was driving me to the airport to catch a plane for New York. Rose was a pilot who had flown C ...

Mona Simpson, writing from the point of view of a Pinay nanny in Los Angeles: "My port of entry was San Francisco, because Bong Bong had a cousin in Petaluma. When Luz arrived at the lobby of my Chinatown hotel that was a little rancid, she smelled like a mint... They live far outside. You cannot see other houses from that place--they are alone. The movies we saw in Tagaytay--the Westerns! It is really like that" (57). Girl, don't even.
history of camera: The Committee for Accuracy in Middle East Reporting in America, or CAMERA, was founded in Washington, DC in 1982 by Winifred Meiselman, a teacher and Social Worker. Mrs. Meiselman formed CAMERA to respond to the Washington Post’s coverage of Israel’s Lebanon incursion, and to the paper’s general anti-Israel bias. Joining CAMERA’s Executive Board in the early days were such prominent Washington-area residents as Saul Stern and Bernard White. Win also recruited an Advisory Board which included Senators Rudy Boschwitz and Charles Grassley, Congressman Tom Lantos, journalist M. Stanton Evans, Ambassador Charles Lichenstein, Pastor Roy Stewart, and Rabbi David Yellin. Under Win’s leadership CAMERA created chapters in major cities, including New York, Chicago, Fort Lauderdale, Los Angeles, Miami, San Francisco, Philadelphia, and in 1988 a Boston chapter and office, founded and led by Andrea Levin. Ms. Levin had taught English in inner-city Philadelphia, and later served as associate ...

Oh, America. The Land of the FREE! A majority of settlers and 'immigrants' came from Europe, killed a bunch of Native Americans and took their land. Fortunately the Native Americans taught the settlers to grow crops and survive before taking over. Then, the settlers won the war against the British to get out of taxation without representation. Then, we had a Civil War for slaves to be free. Then, in 1846.the Mexican-American war ultimately brough Texas, New Mexico, California, etc... to the union. We ultimately bought the land for $15,000,000 (Gardsden Purchase) from the Mexican Government. How did we get city names like San Diego, Los Angeles, Santa Fe, Los Altos, San Antonio, San Francisco, etc...? That sounds like Spanish to me. Since then, we took over Alaska and Hawaii and commonwealths like Puerto Rico and Guam. We won WWII and now have over 500 military bases in over 120 countries. We are a nation of immigrants that ultimately took control of a majority of the world. We demand freedom ...

This Is Y Vaccination Is Sooo Important: Here are three of the diseases that have come back due to the anti-vaccine movement: 1. Measles After the measles vaccine was introduced in 1963, incidences of the diseases dropped by 99%. Since then, there have been an average of 60 measles cases per year in the U.S., but that number increased to 222 cases in 2011. Outbreaks have been reported in New York, Boston, Philadelphia, San Francisco and Los Angeles. 2. Mumps An ongoing outbreak at Ohio State University has resulted in 23 confirmed cases, and there was a similar outbreak at New York's Fordham University last month, with over a dozen students affected. Before the vaccine was introduced in 1967, there were 300,000 cases of mumps per year. Although that number sharply declined in later years to 200 incidences per year, in 2006 alone, there were 6,584 cases of mumps. Another outbreak in 2009 led to 3,400 cases. 3. Whooping cough At the height of the epidemic, whooping cough afflicted more than 250,000 children ...
I owe a lot of the direction in my life to The Do LaB and their festival, Lightning in a Bottle. I had gone to Coachella for 6 years in a row at the time and I always thought of it as the end all, best weekend of the year. But it wasn't until a friend dragged me to LIB that I discovered a brand new world of transformational festivals where I truly felt like I was part of a collective consciousness. I had a blissful freakout of sorts because I'd never been to anything like LIB. I wished for all those years at Coachella back so I could have spent them at festivals that were so much more culturally significant. Someone saw my joy filled freakout and said if I liked LIB, I had to go to Burning Man. The Desert Hearts Crew and I went home and bought our tickets to The Burn the very next day, and the rest is history... That's why I'm so very excited to play a double header in Los Angeles and San Diego for The Do Lab this weekend. These guys legitimately changed my life and I can't thank them enough for all that ...

Shields and Yarnell were an American mime team, formed in 1972, consisting of Robert Shields (born March 26, 1951) and Lorene Yarnell (March 21, 1944–July 29, 2010). Shields was born in Los Angeles and graduated from North Hollywood High. At the age of 18, while working as a street mime and performing at the Hollywood Wax Museum, Shields was seen by Marcel Marceau, who offered Shields a full scholarship to his school of mime in Paris. His apprenticeship was short lived as he felt the need to develop his own style and pry mime loose from its artsy pedestal. Shields soon returned to California, working in Union Square, San Francisco. Lorene Yarnell (also a native Angeleno) had become a tap dancer and actress in television shows including, Shindig!, The Carol Burnett Show, and off-Broadway musicals before she met Shields, in San Francisco. She had a rare speaking role as Doctor Irene Janus and her notorious alter ego, "Formicida" on a guest appearance on the Wonder Woman series' which also featured her hus ...

A federal judge has denied Wells Fargo's latest bid to end a lawsuit brought by the Los Angeles city government accusing the bank of discriminatory lending that led to a wave of foreclosures among minority borrowers. In a ruling made public on Monday, U.S. District Judge Otis Wright denied the San Francisco-based bank's motion to have an appeals court decide whether Los Angeles has legal standing to recover damages under the U.S. Fair Housing Act. Wells is one of four banks sued by Los Angeles for allegedly giving minorities mortgage loans they could not afford, causing defaults, lower property values and neighborhood blight. Maya Angelo studied and began writing poetry at a young age, having "fallen in love with poetry in Stamps, Arkansas",[2] where she grew up and the setting of her first autobiography, I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings (1969). At the age of eight, she was raped, as recounted in Caged Bird. She dealt with her trauma by memorizing and reciting great works of literature, including poetry, which helped bring her out of her self-imposed muteness.[3] According to scholar Yasmin Y. DeGout, literature also affects Angelou's sensibilities as the poet and writer she becomes, especially the "liberating discourse that would evolve in her own poetic canon". As a young adult, Angelou had a series of jobs and occupations, achieving modest success as a singer, dancer, and performer. She was a cast member of a European tour of Porgy and Bess in 1954 and 1955 and was a cabaret singer in nightclubs in the San Francisco and Los Angeles Areas throughout the 1950s. While performing at the Purple Onion in San Francisco, due to the ...

Opponents of the Washington Redskins' name have once more made it clear: They're not going to stop and they plan to target more than just football fans with an ad scheduled to run during the NBA Finals. The Yocha Dehe Wintun Nation will run a one-minute ad Tuesday night during Game 3 between the San Antonio Spurs and Miami Heat. The ad, part of the Change the Mascot campaign, will air only in Washington, San Francisco, Chicago, Dallas, Los Angeles, New York and Sacramento. Meanwhile, the Redskins hired a lobbying firm. According to Politico, in the disclosure announcing the hiring of McGuire Woods Consulting in late May, it stated their responsibilities will be "discussions of team origins, history and traditions, Washington Redskins Charitable Foundation and youth sports, activities of Original Americans' Foundation." The Redskins used former political consultant Lanny Davis to combat some of the criticism last year. They've also tried to diffuse some of the controversy by starting a foundation designed ...

Born in Boston of Irish ancestry and raised in Dallas, Jack Nance traveled throughout the country doing children's theater. For eight years, he performed with the American Conservatory Theater in San Francisco. Later, he became involved with avant-garde theater. He first met David Lynch in the early 1970s in Philadelphia while he was performing in a local theater, and Lynch decided to cast him as the lead in Eraserhead (1977). Originally, it was to be a six-week shooting project, but due to budget restrictions and technical complications, the production and filming took nearly five years to complete. Nance relocated to Los Angeles in the early 1980s, where he appeared in unusual and widely praised films that were not always considered mainstream Hollywood. He has appeared in almost every movie by Lynch, including the television series Twin Peaks (1990), usually playing secondary characters or quirky supporting parts. Nance died suddenly and unexpectedly on December 30, 1996 from an apparent internal head ...
The craze that's turned San Francisco and Los Angeles into giant scavenger hunts has reached the Windy City.
Reflecting on my life I have to say that I have been blessed. I have done many different careers that I chose to do, and was successful at them. I went to Culinary School and had the pleasure of training at The Mondrian in West Hollywood; I received training at Sago’s for my pastry portion of my cooking career. I then had the pleasure of selling wine in the late 80’s and early 90’s and it took me to my new residence in San Francisco for 3 years where I lived in the city and dinned out at 5 star restaurants while selling wine. I then moved back to Los Angeles to start my career in Health Care by taking a temp job working at St. Joseph Medical Center, it lead to many more jobs in Health Care. After 6 years and getting laid off I decided to try my hand at acting which had always been a passion and something I did study in school and college. I was blessed to get cast in Mr. & Mrs. Smith. From there I was cast on Disney’s Phil of the Future and then I landed a National commercial for FOX’s Good Day ...

Josh Beckett threw only the second no-hitter at CBP yesterday. The first one, of course, was Doc Halladay's no-no vs. Cincinnati in the 2010 NLDS. The last time the Fightins were no-hit was in 1978, by Bob Forsch in St. Louis. Since then, four Phillies pitchers have thrown five no-hitters. Terry Mulholland 1990 vs, San Francisco,(I was there!) Tommy Greene 1991 at Montreal, Kevin Millwood 2003 vs. San Francisco, Doc Halladay 2010 (perfect game) at Florida, and Doc again in 2010 postseason vs. Cincinnati. Dodgers pitchers, both Brooklyn and Los Angeles, have no-hit the Phillies five times. Sal Maglie did it on Sept. 25, 1956. Something else happened that day in Philadelphia, by the way. I was born. Two weeks later, Maglie lost to Don Larsen in a World Series perfect game. The last Dodger to no-hit the Fightins? Sandy Koufax? Well, he did in in 1964 at Connie Mack Stadium, but it was Bill Singer, in 1970, who was the last Dodger pitcher to no-no the Fightins. The last Dodger no-hitter was in 1996 ...
May 12, 2014 PAL's B777s FLY TO US After the recent upgrading of the Philippines to Category 1 rating by the US Federal Aviation Administration, Philippine Airlines (PAL) has deployed its fleet of Boeing 777-300ER aircraft on the non-stop flights to the US mainland – to Los Angeles last May 3 and to San Francisco last May 9. The venerable B747-400 served as the airline's flagship aircraft for almost 20 years. The airline's long-range B777-300ERs are currently utilized on the long-haul flights to Australia, Canada and Europe (London). Born in Watts, Los Angeles, Sylvester James, Jr. developed a love of singing through the Gospel Choirs of his Pentecostal church. Leaving the congregation after being persecuted for his homosexuality, he was an early founder of a group of black cross-dressers and trans women known as The Disquotays, who disbanded in 1970. Moving to San Francisco, he embraced the counterculture and joined drag troupe The Cockettes, eventually producing solo shows heavily influenced by female blues and jazz singers like Billie Holiday and Josephine Baker. During their critically panned tour of New York City, Sylvester left the Cockettes to focus on his solo career. Fronting Sylvester and his Hot Band, he released two commercially unsuccessful albums on Blue Thumb Records in 1973. Gaining new backing singers in the form of Two Tons O' Fun and Jeanie Tracy, he obtained a recording contract with Harvey Fuqua of Fantasy Records. His first solo album, Sylvester (1977), was a moderate success, and was followed by acclaimed disco ...

“Everyone needs to drive up the Pacific Coast Highway from Los Angeles to San Francisco at least once in their life.”
The colored line traces the path of the San Andreas Fault down the Peninsula. (Daly City is to the left and the ocean at the bottom right.) In 1769, Captain Gaspar de Portola was the first European to experience and record an earthquake in California. It happened about 30 miles southeast of Los Angeles. The expedition continued their trip north and eventually found themselves camping in a small, beautiful valley that had a stream flowing through the middle of it. “A beautiful valley,” Portola commented. On Nov. 30, 1774, when Captain Fernando Rivera’s exploratory group was returning from their exploration trip to San Francisco, they stopped in a little valley they named Canada de San Andres Valley (later spelled Andreas) to honor their patron saint, St. Andrew. These men thought it was a beautiful little valley. Eventually, this valley was discovered to have a great more influence on California than anyone could imagine. From the air, it appears to be to have been made from a nice sharp knife cut ...
With 2014 nearing its halfway point, a broad spectrum look at more than 380 markets nationwide confirms home prices jumped 11.3 percent in 2013’s final quarter compared to the year prior. CoreLogic released Tuesday its own quarterly Case-Shiller Indexes, assembled using the company’s proprietary data supplemented with statistics from the Federal Housing Finance Agency (FHFA). The analysis differs from the monthly S&P/Dow Jones Case Shiller Indices in that it covers a wider range of markets over a different time frame. While price percentages nationwide were up by double-digits in Q4, seven cities managed to shoot up into the 20 percent range year-over-year, with Las Vegas leading at 25.6 percent growth. The remaining six cities were all in California: Riverside (+23.8 percent), Oakland (+23.3 percent), Sacramento (+23.0 percent), Los Angeles (+20.3 percent), San Jose (+20.1 percent), and San Francisco (+20.0 percent). The sharp increase comes as no surprise for the region, which has suffered from low ...

Lincecum (3-2) left to a roaring standing ovation after pitching a season-high 7 2-3 innings in his first start of eight getting past the sixth. B.J. Upton hit a tying solo homer in the fifth, then was caught stealing on replay review as the potential go-ahead run in the top of the seventh. Upton hit a one-out double and was ruled to have stolen third on a slide below a reaching Pablo Sandoval. Giants manager Bruce Bochy challenged the call by third base umpire Dana DeMuth, and it was overturned in 2 minutes, 7 seconds. San Francisco, coming off a 7-3 road trip to Atlanta, Pittsburgh and Los Angeles, won for the sixth time in seven home games. Atlanta had won three in a row. Well Joe has arrived in America! First stop San Francisco, a visit to Alcatraz and then onto Death Valley, Las Vegas and The Hoover Dam, a helicopter flight over the Grand Canyon, then onto Los Angeles taking in Universal Studios and a basketball game, a lazy day on Venice beach then back home. Phew!! A very fun filled 10 day trip! Why couldn't our school trips be this exciting? A stomach churning ferry crossing to France, with a three night stay in a damp hostel, was all I went on at high school. How things have changed! Thomas and I are missing him already. x

Since the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention first reported the HIV/AIDS epidemic in 1981, rumors have persisted that the deadly virus was created by the CIA to wipe out homosexuals and African Americans. Even today, the conspiracy theory has a number of high-profile believers. South African President Thabo Mbeki once touted the theory, disputing scientific claims that the virus originated in Africa and accusing the U.S. government of manufacturing the disease in military labs. When she won the Nobel Peace Prize, Kenyan ecologist Wangari Maathai used the international spotlight to support that theory as well. Others insist that the government deliberately injected *** men with the virus during 1978 hepatitis-B experiments in New York, San Francisco and Los Angeles. “Mujeres Con Faldas de Serpientes y Talones de Aguila” (Women with serpent skirts and eagle talons) 2014 Curated by Dr. Martina Ayala Theme: “Though we tremble before uncertain futures may we meet illness, death and adversity with strength, may we dance in the face of our fears.” - Gloria Anzaldua The theme for this exhibit is inspired by Coatlicue the feminine diety that comes from Aztec mythology. Coatlicue derives from the Nahuatl language meaning “the one with the skirt of serpents.” The word for serpent is coātl. "Mother Goddess of the Earth who gives birth to all celestial things", "Goddess of Fire and Fertility", "Goddess of Life, Death and Rebirth", and "Mother of the Southern Stars." This show brings together women artists from Los Angeles, San Francisco, Kentucky and Mexico that embody what author Gloria Anzaldua described as the “Coatlicue State” a term used to describe the “internal whirlwind” which “gives and takes away life,” “invoking art,” and that is “alive ...
Is anybody flying to San Francisco or Los Angeles in July after Hillsong Conference?
Demetrie Kabbaz, a dear friend from my younger days, passed away on March 25 in St. Louis. He is a great artist and spent days creating art in St. Louis, San Francisco, New York, Los Angeles and Santa Fe. He had just turned 70. He loved Marilyn Monroe and painted her endlessly. We used to drive through Forest Park in St. Louis singing show tunes and dreaming dreams. Our dreams were so big! Check out the link to his site and do scroll down on page 1 to see the link to collections thing that Love is continuous... Here is a Marilyn called Au Revoir.

March 17, 1967 -- Warner Brothers issues The Grateful Dead, featuring “Cold Rain and Snow,” “Viola Lee Blues” and “Morning Dew.” The LP produces the band’s first studio outtake: the group effort “Alice D. Millionaire,” inspired by a headline about LSD maven Owsley Stanley. On the cover of [the Dead's] first album, this inscription from the ancient Egyptian Book of the Dead is cleverly encrypted in the artwork - “In the land of the dark, the ship of the sun is drawn by the Grateful Dead.” “The Golden Road (to Unlimited Devotion),” a nugget from the 1967 album, [is a] simple, melodic number [that] reflects the sounds of the day: catchy tunes with over-the-top choruses. Psychedelic “pop” bands were emerging all over the world - London’s Pink Floyd, the Doors in Los Angeles, Lou Reed and the Velvet Underground from New York, the Grateful Dead - and grabbing the attentions and capturing the imaginations of young people everywhere. March 23, 1967 -- San Francisco mayor John Shell ...
Since winning the Gold Medal of the prestigious 5th USA International Harp Competition in 2001, Dan Yu’s lyrical interpretations, profound musicality, and technical mastery have captivated and dazzled audiences across three continents. She has performed solo recitals and chamber music concerts throughout the United States, Europe and Asia, and appeared to great acclaim at Alice Tully Hall, New York, and Wigmore Hall, London. The New York Concert Review hailed her as “a unique and major talent capable of bringing the art of harp playing and the way the world views it to an entirely new dimension…..radiating so much joy…it seems she’s already in a class by herself.” As a recitalist, Dan Yu played in numerous cities such as Paris, Geneva, Zurich, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Seattle, and Atlanta. In 2004 her Asian tour took her to Tokyo, Kobe, Fukui in Japan, and Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, and Shenyang in China. She has been featured twice at the World Harp Congress in Geneva and Amsterdam. Sh ...
Okay, I’m troubled by a new report that crossed my desk this morning. The article is titled, “Growing number of California churches believe homosexuality is not sinful.” The article, from The Sacramento Bee declares that more than 800 churches in California AFFIRM and SUPPORT *** a number that has risen 50% since 2005. Now, the fact that this is California doesn't surprise me, nor does it surprise me that the largest concentration of these churches is found in San Francisco and Los Angeles. Those areas have been *** strongholds” for years. The article further states that three-quarters of “Christian, *** affirming churches in California” belong to five denominations: the Episcopal Church; the United Church of Christ; the United Methodist Church; the Presbyterian Church and the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America. While all churches should be open to having homosexuals attend, since all of us need the gospel, I’m troubled by the use of the word “affirm.” The word “affirm” ...

In the spirit of the Mary McLeod Bethune Council House National Historic Site would like to highlight one of our long-standing partnering organizations, the Association of Black Women Historians (ABWH). In 1977, recognizing the need for a uniquely focused organizational structure within their profession, three Black women historians spearheaded the move to recruit other Black women nationwide. Rosalyn Terborg-Penn, Eleanor Smith, and Elizabeth Parker initiated a series of meetings held in South Hadley, Massachusetts, and in two California cities, Los Angeles and San Francisco. The ABWH constitution outlines four organizational goals: to establish a network among the membership; to promote Black women in the profession; to disseminate information about opportunities in the field; and to make suggestions concerning research topics and repositories. Apart from amendments concerning dues, the constitution has undergone few revisions since its adoption. Starting with the 1979 gathering in New York, ABWH annual ...

We always hear that cannabis smoke causes lung problems but that is simply not true. Copy this link and send it to people every time they quote debunk studies that states such false claims. Also, look up the National Cancer Institute, a federally funded agency that has proved that cannabis smoke can prevent or treat lung cancer. ~John Investigators at the University of California, San Francisco analyzed the association between marijuana exposure and pulmonary function over a 20-year period in a cohort of 5,115 men and women in four US cities. "We hypothesized that there would be a positive association between marijuana use and lung cancer, and that the association would be more positive with heavier use," the study's lead researcher, Dr. Donald Tashkin of the University of California at Los Angeles stated. What we found instead was no association at all, and even a suggestion of some protective effect" among marijuana smokers who had lower incidences of cancer compared to non-users.
