March 20th is INTERNATIONAL EARTH DAY International Earth Day was initiated to make earth inhabitants aware of their responsibility to care for the planet. This care includes environmental and natural resources. International Earth Day was founded by John McConnell, of Davis City, Iowa. In September, 1969, he proposed the establishment of Earth Day to the San Francisco, California Board of Supervisors. After approval, he gained support from many others, including then UN General Secretary, U Thant. In 1970, McConnell wrote an Earth Day Proclamation which was ultimately signed by UN Secretary General U Thant on March 21, 1971. John McConnell lived and wrote about the sustainable future of the earth, including the “77 Theses on the Care of the Earth.” These theses provide the principles for the rejuvenation of the earth and what individuals and groups can do to make a difference. Mark your calendars... Love The Planet will be an exhibitor at San Francisco's Earth Day Celebration on April 19.

Immidearte ReleaseGate Ecology Center Eviction San Francisco, CA: January 7, 2013 The Greenhouse is being threatened today at 3pm by Park and Rec. come help us save it! We are recycling HANCs community centric model to create the Golden Gate Ecology Center - brief history of HANC Haight-Ashbury Neighborhood Council (HANC) has fought a long struggle to keep Kezar Gardens/ HANC Recycling center alive in its present location at 780 Frederick Street. The first Earth Day was in 1970 when national organizations came together in San Francisco- It was decided that recycling centers were needed so we can salvage our cities, and protect our sacred Earth. In 1974 preHANC built two recycling centers in Golden Gate Park, and a picnic permit was granted. The center was run exclusively by volunteers, and under Mayors Moscone and Feinstein it was moved to its current location at 780 Frederick Street. I love how the San Francisco hippies go to Fort Mason to celebrate Earth Day, and left behind a park literally COVERED in trash. Hypocrite much?
An Earth Day memory: I drove into San Francisco for the first time in the spring of 1971. I'd been driving for three straight days from the east coast and had lost track of time. The streets of SF were thronged with people all heading in the same direction, and I asked a pedestrian what was going on. "It's Earth Day," he said. "The Grateful Dead is playing a free concert in Golden Gate Park." He told me the buses were overcrowded so everybody was walking to the park. "Get in," I said, and I gave him a lift as close as we could get to the park. That was my first day in California, and I loved this place ever since. GH
I just may celebrate Earth Day and Vladimir Lenin's birthday by relaxing at Fisherman's Wharf in San Francisco, shooting a sea turtle and BBQing it on the beach, maybe making turtle soup in the shell and chasing sea lions from the pier. Sounds like a good day.
