A lot of folks have asked me in private why I feel so passionately about what is going on in Ferguson right now. Here’s a small slice of why. I spent nearly all of my early years living in Southern California. My mother was a single parent and after a while the cost of living in California had just become too much to bear. We moved to the St. Louis area from San Diego in 1992, just a few weeks before the LA Riots. All of my family is from there. I split time living with my grandmother and with my aunt who lives in Dellwood, 2 streets away from the Ferguson city limits. My grandmother lives in the Walnut Park area of St. Louis’ north side, arguably one of the most dangerous neighborhoods in America. Years later my 3-year-old cousin would be killed almost right in front of my grandmother’s home in a drive by shooting. My mother made the decision to send me to school in the then middle class neighborhood my aunt lived in. Ferguson Middle School was the first school that I attended in Missouri. Looking ...

It was 121° F in Palm Springs, 120° F at Indio and Thermal, 114° F at Ontario and the Wild Animal Park, and 113° F at El Cajon. Many were killed from the heat, and many more were treated for heat related illnesses. Some power outages occurred. I posted an important article written by San Diego Union tribune no more Migrant flights to San Diego from Texas. Yea anti immigrant mobilization in Murrieta successful as US government is scared to bring undocumented immigrants to Southern California. They claimed they are lesser migrants to move that is not true based on my information. they just did not want to risk it. Interesting they cancel flights after anti immigrant groups were recruiting marines and military people armed with guns. I saw pictures of this on right wing websites A major victory for anti immigrant groups no more flights of migrants to SOuthern Calfifornia.

Carlsbad, California (CNN) -- Thousands of homes, a university campus, a nuclear plant, a Legoland and parts of one of the military's biggest and busiest bases: All have been evacuated due to a rare confluence of fast-moving wildfires scorching Southern California. The Golden State has seen many such blazes before. But these are different because they sprung up so quickly, spread so fast, and hit months before the traditional height of wildfire season, making them menacing in the short- and long-term. CNN meteorologist Jennifer Gray forecasts what the area might expect as the summer gives way to fall: "This is only going to get worse." Carlsbad Mayor Matt Hall -- whose city issued 23,000 evacuation notices, including to three schools -- noted Wednesday evening that crews are battling seven separate wildfires. Hot winds fan San Diego-area wildfire Christina Echols of Oceanside hasn't been told to leave -- yet. But with her home sitting "in the middle of three fires" and a little over 7 miles from the San O ...

Update from my daughter Heather: Precious friends and family, Wow! It looks like we might be transferring down to Southern California this week! Jason was in Palm Springs over the weekend for a work conference, and stayed through today to look into children's hospitals with good recovery programs. This next leg of our journey will probably be two to three weeks of very painful and intensive physical therapy to help Joshy regain full use of his muscles and full range of motion. We have gently discussed with Josh that the first part of his recovery was to passively suffer pain, poking and prodding, but the next phase he will have to become an active participant in the painful fight for mobility. We are hoping that children's hospital in Loma Linda will have a great recovery program with excellent physical therapists. This would be the closest to home, and most convenient. We are also looking into Sharps Children's in San Diego and a children's hospital in Orange County. If anyone is familiar with any of the ...
Da Vinci Science charter team wins engineering contest An all-girls team from Da Vinci Science charter high school in Hawthorne recently won an Engineering Design competition, beating out 16 teams from Southern California. Da Vinci Science ninth-graders Kelly Crabtree, Rachel Greenberg and Cindy Magana won first place in the Chevron Engineering Design Challenge regional competition on April 26 in Redondo Beach. Using Autodesk Inventor software, each team had only one day to create an original car activity center that would function as both a work surface and a location to organize books, food, drinks and other hard-to-reach items. Professional engineers from Chevron and PLTW teachers judged students’ design process and oral presentations. Each Da Vinci student won an iPad Air and the team qualified to compete in the state championships on May 17 in San Diego. The team was supported by engineering teacher Lenny Perez. Chevron sponsored Project Lead The Way Introduction to Engineering Design competition.

Dear TLC lovers, This April it has been 2 years since I opened The Last Call. It has truly been a dream come true for me. Someone told me "you will never make it in New Mexico if you don't serve green chile". But YOU — my WONDERFUL customers, have proved the naysayers wrong! I moved here from San Diego with a passion to cook fresh Baja Mexican and Southern California cuisine - serving the late night masses. I have poured my heart and soul into The Last Call and the success after 2 years is humbling, to say the least. I want to take the time to thank YOU — our customers, for believing and supporting what we do. For giving this small hole in the wall a shot and continuing to patronize our business. I appreciate all the positive comments, gestures and feedback you continually give me and my staff. You are the reason we do what we do. Thank you for "Tasting the love, and loving the taste". 04/2/2014.THE VIEW FROM SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA by ZCin2020 Editorial Board [EB] member Michael Mankin in San Diego, CALIFORNIA: "The reason why ZC have gone to the dogs is because of el custumbre del Zamboangueño ahora tiene sila miedo to speak up. They lost their sense of self-respect, and when you lose your self-respect everything goes down the drain, too, including your principles even what you stand for; what you believe is right and then there goes your values, then what's left is nothing---not even a little of self-pride." =

The Confidence Game Written by Mike Terry The Dodgers And Angels Believe They Can Have Successful Seasons And Make The Playoffs Major League Baseball got its season underway this week for all of its teams this week. And baseball on the West Coast, from San Diego to Oakland, figures to be highly competitive and have a definitive say in who wins the championship in October. Here in Southern California, both the Dodgers and Angels can describe themselves as contenders and say it with a straight face. Each team has young and veteran stars, each team has depth. Each team has the offensive capability in the starting lineups to produce runs and summerlong excitement. The Dodgers have the more proven pitching, while the Angels are rolling the dice on some young arms that must prove their worth more in August and September than May and June. What’s more important: both teams believe and have reasons to believe they are contenders and factors in 2014. It should make for a highly watchable baseball season for the ...

Five months of meals. What a powerful force for good in our community. And you know what? You did that! Every one of you who helped out in any way last year--whether it was going to an event, buying a jello shot, cookie, or raffle ticket, attending Bearquake, or by spreading the word. You did that. I am honored humbled to have served as Mr. Bear San Diego this past year, and you all have made it a joy. Thank you especially to the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence, The Imperial Court de San Diego, the Leather communities, and all the other Southern California and Tijuana bear groups. It really doesn't rain in southern California. So, I asked my sister where's LA's water supply come from, she says, I don't know, LOL. So I did the research. State Water Project State Water Project In 1960, California voters approved financing for construction of the initial features of the State Water Project (SWP). The project includes some 22 dams and reservoirs, a Delta pumping plant, a 444-mile-long aqueduct that carries water from the Delta through the San Joaquin Valley to southern California. The project begins at Oroville Dam on the Feather River and ends at Lake Perris near Riverside. At the Tehachapi Mountains, giant pumps lift the water from the California Aqueduct some 2,000 feet over the mountains and into southern California. The SWP provides irrigation water to farms in the San Joaquin Valley, and is a major source of supply for cities in Los Angeles, Riverside, San Bernardino, San Diego, and other parts of southern California. In addition, the SWP serves cities in Napa and Solano counties ...

Allen played running back at the University of Southern California (USC) from 1978 to 1981. He was recruited as a defensive back, but head coach John Robinson switched him to tailback. Allen spent his first season at USC as a backup to Heisman Trophy winning running back Charles White. In 1979, he was moved to fullback. Eventually, in 1980, Allen became the starter at tailback and rushed for 1,563 yards, the third-most in the nation that year (behind senior George Rogers of S. Carolina - 1,781 yards and freshman Herschel Walker of Georgia - 1,616). In 1981, Allen had one of the most spectacular seasons in NCAA history, rushing for 2,342 yards, becoming the first player in NCAA history to rush for over 2,000 yards in one season, passing the 2,000 yar ...
I was reading an article in Harper's earlier about the Colorado River and water use in the Southwest. According to a studies done by UC San Diego's Scripps Institution of Oceanography in 2008 and 2009, there's a 50% chance that Southern California won't be able to draw water from Lake Mead by 2036. Because of Hoover Dam's configuration, electricity production would cease somewhat before that (water level 155 feet higher). And because California has precedence over Arizona (it began using the water first) Arizona would stop getting water before there was none for LA. Friends in the region: Karen Rontowski, Leigh Bowie, David Holtzman, etc., take note.

The National Weather Service in San Diego has issued a Flash Flood Warning for: West Central Riverside County in Southern California. East Central Orange County in Southwest California.
SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA SEVERE WEATHER UPDATE- Winter has finally arrived in Southern California with light to moderate rain falling overnight from Santa Barbara through San Diego and inland. A Winter Storm Warning is now in effect for the mountains above 6000 feet. A flash flood watch is in effect particularly for the burn areas. The Camarillo area would be my best guess at where the news stations will set up to try and get flash flood footage. A potent (By California standards) 974mb low is developing well to the West of Central California. It will spin up a vigorous front that will impact the area on Friday with strong winds, moderate to heavy (Very heavy in Thunderstorms) and some possible small waterspouts and F-0 to F1 tornadoes. The action begins on Friday morning but will build throughout the day. If you have not watched a storm come in at the coast, do yourself a favor and find a safe place to watch from whether inside or outside and enjoy the show. Dress appropriately and stay off of jettys or e ...

WebSense To Move Headquarters To Texas - In a big loss for the local high tech community, Computer Security software developer Websense--based in San Diego--is moving its headquarters to Austin, Texas, and is taking 445 jobs with it. According to Texas Governor Rick Perry--who has been aggressively courting Southern California companies--Websense has agreed to move its headquarters and employees to Texas, after receiving a $4.5M payment from the state. The move comes eight months after Websense was acquired by private equity company Vista Equity Partners last June. Vista Equity Partners also owns two other, San Diego firms--Omnitracs and Active Network--spurring speculation that those firms are also at risk of relocating to Texas.
The Lupus Community in San Diego has lost one of it's greatest patient advocate. Kitty Mones passed away on Thursday, January 23, 2014 at the age of 89. In 1976 Kitty with a group of other lupus patients met over coffee and started the first lupus group in San Diego County which led to The American Lupus Society which is now the Lupus Foundation of Southern California. Kitty served in various capacities from Board Member, Chaired Various Committees and Fundraising Events and President. Kitty voluneered endless hours at the lupus office answering questions about lupus to everyone who dropped by or called the office. But Kitty's biggest contribution was being a patient advocate for lupus. Our sincere condolences to the Mones Family. She will be missed.

On this Day in Weather History. *In 1987, an Arctic airmass invaded the north central United States. By evening, strong northwest winds, combined with temperatures near zero, resulted in wind chills near 50 below zero at Grand Forks, North Dakota. *In 1999, it was widely reported that Allagash, Maine set the state's all time record low temperature at 55 below zero. However, no record was set since the thermometer was found to be in error! *In 1934, Fairbanks, Alaska set their all-time record low temperature of 66 below zero. The day before, on the 13th, their low was 65 below while on the 15th, their low was 64 below. *In 1882, Southern California's greatest snow occurred on this date, when San Bernadino was buried under 15 inches. Even San Diego received a trace of snow.

Comment from Garrison Keillor Prairie Home Companion. We are Minnesotans in San Diego (briefly) in January and while that is a pleasure and a thing of beauty, we are nonetheless obligated to disparage Southern California for the sake of the people in Ely, Minnesota, who listen to the show and Crookston and Grand marauders, people in log huts with ten-foot stacks of firewood by the back door people who wear parkas indoors and sleep under piles of foam blNkrts and anal skins for as many as eighteen or twenty hours a day and who,we're we to talk about running around in T-shirts and eating mahimahi under the spreading palm trees, might lose heart Nd Jo on their snowmobiles and head south leaving our long northern border in defended against the rapacious Canadian, which would not be good,so we ask your indulgence in the interest if national security. Great show and lots of fun music.
Double Coverage: Chargers at Bengals By Coley Harvey and Eric D. Williams The last time the San Diego Chargers and Cincinnati Bengals met, both teams were missing key players, they played in a local TV blackout, and they could comfortably compete on a 60-degree, postcard-perfect Southern California afternoon. Those were the conditions just one month ago Wednesday. At least one of them could be the same. With ticket uncertainty rolling over into Thursday, Bengals officials have been working hard to avoid the NFL's first postseason blackout since 2002. On the field, the Bengals and Chargers have been working to get back key members of their teams, and are anticipating playing in conditions much less favorable than what they had on the West Coast. Sunday's playoff game isn't only a rematch of the regular-season game won 17-10 by the Bengals. It also marks the first time the teams have met in the postseason since 1981, when Cincinnati beat San Diego for the AFC championship at old Riverfront Stadium. Because ...

Gr, I hate it when you're right Bill Simmons. Petroleum and our food huh? Wow. Why does this not sound like a good match? Who knew companies like this were bought by foreign oil investors? From Eater LA: International Petroleum Investment Company, or IPIC, is a $780 billion investment fund out of Abu Dhabi that has helped fund the global expansion of the Hakkasan restaurant empire, as well as the eponymously named club that opened earlier this year in Vegas. Eater has now received multiple reports that the fund is VERY close to inking another deal that will expand their restaurant and nightlife interests by acquiring a 50% stake of James Brennan's Enlightened Hospitality, which owns San Diego's Stingaree and Top Chef alum Brian Malarkey's restaurant consortium. The deal, which is reportedly worth close to $28 million, will give IPIC a foothold in two key Southern California markets that feed into Vegas, and will provide Enlightened with a capital infusion to fund further expansion. Enlightened is set to debut its next Malarkey branded restaurant Herr ...

Info-6 Kate Morgan Hotel del Coronado Hotel del Coronado is a stunning Victorian beachfront resort hotel in the very southern California city of Coronado, just south of San Diego. It was only four years open when a beautiful young woman named Kate Morgan checked in on November 24th, 1892. She was apparently very ill for the time she spent at the hotel, and it was later speculated she had taken a large dose of quinine in an effort to induce miscarriage of an unwanted child. That she was distraught there was little argument, so when she was found on the outside steps leading to the beach on November 29th, with a single bullet hole in her temple and a gun nearby, the death was quickly ruled a suicide. From that point on, strange phenomena have been reported at the hotel: strange noises, lights flickering on and off, and even the occasional ghostly woman in Victorian garb wandering the halls. It is worth noting during my research on this story that the particular room number where most of the phenomena is wit ...

I am so very proud ! My son's heading out to sunny Southern California. He'll be stationed on Coronado Island, 10 minutes from San Diego. *** it was harder saying good-bye this time than boot camp.
Just in from a great road trip to San Diego to watch Marine Corps graduation. On the way, the winds came sweeping down the plains as we passed through Oklahoma, and I'm fairly sure that I heard some thunder as we drove by OK City. Our plans to be in Amarillo by morning didn't work out due to the work schedule of travelling companions. By the time we got to Phoenix, it was rush hour. I put my son Aaron behind the wheel and closed my eyes. He didn't even try to drive 55, but we made it safe and sound. Our hotel in California was such a lovely place. We could check in any time we liked, and I can't seem to remember leaving. We gathered for a feast at their fantastic Mexican restaurant. There was a lot of variation in the price of gas, and I was glad when I saw that it was $3.10 in Yuma. Having heard somewhere that it never rains in Southern California, I was surprised when it did for most of our stay. Man, it poured. Our son Kellin is now officially a US Marine, and I knew he was ready to go home when he tol ...
I read this article about treats in California, by Andrew Collins. Everyone can enjoy these hot spots. at the end of last year, I've created a new San Diego *** Bar Guide- it's a survey of about 20 popular hangouts throughout Southern California's second-largest city, plus the notoriously wild Club Fusion/Club Extasis, just a few hundred feet over the U.S./Mexico border in Tijuana (I included some tips on how to easily and affordably get here from downtown). San Diego has a relatively stable *** clubbing scene - many of the top spots here have been going strong for 15 or 20 years, and the majority of the city's GLBT nightspots are in the lively Hillcrest neighborhood, with several others in North Park, just to the east. During my visit, I also had the chance to stay at Kimpton's latest San Diego hotel, the chic and stylish Palomar, which opened in 2009 (then as Se San Diego) and contains some of the most smartly designed rooms in the city. It's in downtown's Gaslamp Quarter, within an easy stroll of a nu ...

Little Change Again for Southland Home Prices; Sales Picture Mixed November 12, 2013 Southern California home buying picked up last month compared with September but fell short of a year earlier as sales in inventory-starved, lower-cost markets continued to lag far behind 2012 levels. For the fourth month in a row the region’s median sale price more or less moved sideways, though it was still nearly 22 percent higher than October last year, a real estate information service reported. A total of 20,150 new and resale houses and condos sold in Los Angeles, Riverside, San Diego, Ventura, San Bernardino and Orange counties last month. That was up 5.4 percent from 19,112 sales in September, and down 4.4 percent from 21,075 sales in October 2012, according to San Diego-based DataQuick. On average, Southland sales have declined 1.1 percent between September and October since 1988, when DataQuick’s statistics begin. Last month’s sales were 14.4 percent below the average number of sales – 23,572 – in the ...

Global Warming Update-- Mountains in Southern California's Los Angeles, San Bernardino, and Riverside Counties (Maybe San Diego) get earliest snows in 40 years!
Hmmm, it really does rain in southern California. It was quite funny tonight, though, when the thunder started and some young men on Travis' football team began yelling because they didn't know what it was. When I asked a friend of his if he had ever heard thunder before, he said, "Yeah, I heard it once in San Diego." He said it so earnestly, but I had a very hard time believing him. I'm guessing he wasn't joking. Seems unreal. These same kids have never seen snow.

Relative humidity was predicted to be as low as 5% to 10% in some areas, the weather service said, and the readings were not expected to improve much overnight.

US court allows teaching yoga in California school WASHINGTON: A US court has allowed teaching yoga in a Southern California district school as part of curriculum, rejecting the petition by parents that the ancient Indian practice is promoting Hindu religious beliefs. San Diego Superior Court Judge John Meyer on Monday ruled that the yoga programme of Encinitas Union School District does not endorse any religion. As such the judge rejected the plea of a section of parents of schools that the Encinitas Union School District in San Diego by providing instruction in Ashtanga yoga, is promoting religious beliefs. The law suit was filed by The National Center for Law and Policy on behalf of the parents. "It's almost like a trial by Wikipedia, which isn't what this court does," said Meyer, who took nearly two hours to explain a decision that explored yoga's Indian roots and philosophy. The 30-minute programme in Encinitas, funded by the Jois Foundation, is composed of stretching and breathing exercises and is d ...

When Carlsbad Raceway closed in August of 2004, Drag Racers in Southern California lost another historic dedicated race track, where many records, hearts, and parts were broken over the 40+ years of drag racing.   This left two choices for legal drag racing in San Diego County, Race Legal hosted 1/8th mile at the parking lot in Jack Murphy Stadium in Mission Valley, or 30 miles east at the new 1/8th mile track `opened in June of 2003 near Ramona on the Barona Indian Reservation, named Barona Drag Strip.   Race Legal has been operating in cooperation with the City of San Diego for many many years as part of effort to keep racing off the streets. I shared this statement in answer to one of my Sweetwater Union High School, class of 1965, friends on (SuHi Friends): Yes! I lived in Africa. It was totally amazing! It was quite awesome for a boy from California to be in such a place. I lived in Rhodesia. In 1977 I took my wife and two daughters to live in a country that was at war. I went as a missionary with the Church of the Nazarene. My role was "Leadership Development," Church planting/evangelism - helping people understand how to live a life totally committed to Jesus and love God the Father. Rhodesia now Zimbabwe...It became Zimbabwe in 1980 while we were living there. It was a very historical moment. Rhodesia was actually claiming independence from Great Britain...They declared "UDI" - Unilateral Declaration of Independence. Well, when Rhodesia became Zimbabwe it officially ended the British Empire. History - WOW! The climate is not too much different than Southern California - same distance form the equator south as San Diego is north ...

From June 1 to June 12 we vacationed in southern California. We spent three days at Disneyland, a day at the Santa Monica Pier, a day at Sea World in San Diego, and a day at Universal Studios. We also visited four beaches, which were mostly cold. A hotel clerk in San Diego (who is probably still laughing) recommended we go to Coronado Beach, so we drove over a causeway to get to Coronado Island and then to the beach. It was shortly after lunch, and we all felt the need for the facilities. There were none. An employee on a golf cart came by, and he was probably hired just to tell disappointed tourists that the beach had no public facilities. He pointed toward the Community Building on the other side of a large parking lot and across a busy highway. We went on the trek in pairs, and 50% of our party urinated on themselves. I was half of the 50% that did not. Shortly thereafter we left and went to La Jolla Beach. We saw an amazing array of t-shirts, keychains, plastic Oscars, hats, snow globes, sun glasses ( ...

Impeach Obama’ Protest Causes Giant Southern California Traffic Jam JUNE 10, 2013 BY BREAKING NEWS 35 COMMENTS A TEA Party sponsored “Impeach Obama” demonstration on a major Southern California freeway overpass caused traffic to backup at least ten miles, as the organizer apologized for “any small inconvenience” drivers may have dealt with, as reported by the San Diego-based local news portal the Carlsbad Patch on June 9, 2013. Flying a number of American flag as well as the TEA (Taxed Enough Already) Party-adopted Gadsen flag, protesters flashed to motorists on the Interstate 5 southbound lanes in Carlsbad, California placards stating “Remember Benghazi,” “Obama Lies” and “Amnesty *** No!” Organizers estimated between 25,000 and 30,000 vehicles would drive under the Tamarack Rd. overpass where the protesters set up shop. By 12:15, the notoriously slow California freeway traffic had become a slow flowing parking lot from the protest site all the way back to the main gate of the spra ...
If anybody understands California's water wars, please enlighten me. It is beyond me why those of us in the north are constantly being called upon to send our water to Los Angeles, San Diego, Longbeach and the rest of Southern California. We grow the food that makes CA the number one farm state in the country. So why should we have to send our priceless water to cities like Los Angeles that won't even give us the time of day? What do we have in common with these huge urban centers as we look out upon the horizon from Half Dome or El Capitan?
Glitch-hit US nuclear plant shut down for good : A California Nuclear Power plant shut down last year after a radiation leak will be permanently closed, its owners said today. Southern California Edisonhas been trying to fix problems which came to light last year after a minor leak in one reactor at the San Onofre plant, north of San Diego in southern California. But SCE parent company Edison International's chairman Ted Craver said experts had finally concluded that they cannot resolve the problems quickly or comprehensively enough.
SAN DIEGO (AP) — The American Civil Liberties Union sued the U.S. government Tuesday over the way Mexicans accused of living in the country illegally agree to be sent home, claiming the so-called voluntary departures are actually coerced. The federal lawsuit filed in Los Angeles alleges immigration authorities in Southern California routinely steer Mexican immigrants away from insisting on an appearance before an immigration judge. They are told they face months in jail while their cases are decided and are falsely informed that they can easily arrange legal status once they're back in Mexico, the lawsuit alleges. U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement and the Border Patrol offer voluntary departures to some immigrants without criminal records, sparing them the possibility of stiffer penalties under formal deportation orders. Voluntary departures prohibit immigrants from re-entering the U.S. for up to 10 years. The lawsuit by the ACLU of San Diego & Imperial Counties against Homeland Security Secreta ...

LA’s Frontiers to emerge stronger after bankruptcy protection by Chuck Colbert In a move to restructure its debt and emerge with a stronger balance sheet, Frontiers Media, LLC, has filed for bankruptcy protection from its creditors. Based in Los Angeles, the media company publishes Frontiers Magazine, the oldest and largest circulation LGBT publication serving Southern California. It is distributed free of charge primarily in San Diego, Long Beach, West Hollywood, and Palm Springs. News of the filing came in a March 20 press statement, which said Frontiers Media filed a voluntary petition for Chapter 11 reorganization in the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the Central District of California. Frontiers has liabilities of $3.2 million and assets of $342,000, only $58,000 of which is in cash, according to the filing. For everyone that doesn't have a Clue what America is Facing? """Mexican Nationals Sue U.S. Over `Voluntary Departure’ By Edvard Pettersson - Jun 4, 2013 6:07 PM PT Mexican nationals living in Southern California are coerced into signing “voluntary departure” documents that deny them their right to an immigration hearing, the American Civil Liberties Union said in a federal lawsuit. The ACLU of San Diego and Imperial Counties sued U.S. immigration authorities in federal court in Los Angeles today on behalf of seven Mexican nationals, seeking to represent others in a class action, or group lawsuit. The ACLU seeks a court order declaring the deportations of the seven individuals and others were unlawful and allowing them to return to the U.S. “The policy and practice of misrepresenting an individual’s legal rights to summarily deport them from this country is inconsistent with the fundamental notions of fairness and due process under our Constitution,” Anthony Stiegler, a lawyer with Cooley LLP ...
NFL great "Deacon" Jones dead at 74 David "Deacon" Jones, the original sackmaster, has died. The Hall of Fame defensive end credited with terming the word sack -- for how he knocked down quarterbacks -- was 74. The Washington Redskins said Jones died of natural causes at his home in Southern California on Monday night. "Deacon Jones was one of the greatest players in NFL history. Off the field, he was a true giant," said Redskins general manager Bruce Allen, whose father, George, coached Jones with the Los Angeles Rams. "His passion and spirit will continue to inspire those who knew him. He was a cherished member of the Allen family and I will always consider him my big brother." Because sacks didn't become an official statistic until 1982, Jones' total is uncertain. His impact as a premier pass rusher and team leader is not. Jones was the leader of the Rams' Fearsome Foursome unit from 1961-71, then played for San Diego for two seasons before finishing his career with the Redskins in 1974. He was inducte ...

INDIAN WELLS, Calif. — A modest but widely felt earthquake rolled through a wide swath of Southern California late Monday morning but there were no immediate reports of damage. The 9:55 a.m. quake had an estimated magnitude of 4.7, said Nick Scheckel, seismic analyst at the California Institute of Technology's seismological laboratory in Pasadena. He said a number of aftershocks were occurring. The epicenter was about a dozen miles from the Riverside County desert community of Anza, about 100 miles southeast of Los Angeles. The temblor, which occurred at a depth of eight miles, was felt sharply in the local area and caused a swaying or rolling motion in Los Angeles and San Diego as well as in Orange and San Bernardino counties. Susie Bride, a cashier at Cahuilla Mountain Market and Cafe in Anza, said the quake seemed to last awhile but didn't do any damage to the business. "It kind of shook and then I thought, `God, is that an earthquake?' It kind of shook and then it rolled a little bit and then it sho ...
Watched "Argo" last night: as you know, it's based on a real story with some "additions" to it. While watching I was thinking, "Oh, this really looks like Sultanahmet and Grand Bazaar", in fact, it was Sultanahmet, Grand Bazaar and at some moments, Hagia Sophia in Istanbul. I was curious where they were shooting this movie. Turned to be California. I kinda forgot: there are lots of Persians live in Southern California. When I lived in San Diego, we had them in our School, and my friend was dating a Persian guy. In fact, celebrating Nouruz (Persian New Year) was lots of fun, dancing and delicious food. And, yes, I read about Tom Mendez today.

*If we can't be there we can write.* Here's Anne's letter: To the NavySonarAgenda Number CD-008-13 (Navy, Southern California). Dear Sirs, I am protesting against the Navy's proposal to engage in intense training exercises throughout Tongva and Acjachemen and coastal tribal territories from north of Dana Point to San Diego up to 600 nautical miles out to sea for five years. I fee strongly about this and want to state that you do not have the right to destroy or damage the sea and animals that are free to roam. They will suffer and die from the exercises, and I want my children and theirs to live in a natural environment with all Sea Life in that still. Keep out of the seas with your explosions and heavy deafening exercises.! Times change, you can use computers and Calculate the results. Do not destroy our nature with your naval war games. The manhunt in Southern California continues for Christopher Dorner - an ex naval officer and terminated LAPD officer. He has killed 3 and injured 1 so far. His written manifesto lists 20 that need to go. He blew through my city -San Diego- pretty quick. No one seems to have seen him here, but personal stuff of his left behind says he was here. Now he seems to be (law enforcement thinks) in the mountains about 150 miles north of here near Big Bear Lake. 7,000 feet up so cold this time of year. Residents there locked in tight with guns and ammo if they have them? Area crawling with cops. He doesn't blend in real well though at 6' feet tall and 270 lbs. I predict he will not be taken alive. He is one of the approximately 23,000,000 people in Southern Calfornia that is trying to do it HIS way ... and so far ... so good?
Gumbo NEWS: Los Angeles (CNN) -- Police continued the massive manhunt for Christopher Dorner early Friday in a Southern California mountain town as a severe winter storm that may help cover the tracks of the suspected cop killer moved in. As quickly as Dorner emerged on the scene with his guns, bravado and bitter manifesto, the burly man, who is a suspect in three murders, disappeared, it seemed. Investigators suspect him of killing a police officer, and another officer's daughter and fiance, to settle a score for what he called an unjust firing. Early Friday, it seemed for a while that the focus of the search had shifted to the San Diego area, where a caller told authorities that Dorner may have been spotted near the Barona Indian Reservation. Officers were searching that area, said Sgt. Jason Rothlein of the San Diego County Sheriff's Department. He later said the phone call was probably a hoax. I had heard glowing reports about this southernmost mecca from South African friends living in San Diego and Los Angeles. I now understand why when they move to the U.S., they often choose Southern California as a logical nesting place. My maiden voyage to "the Cape" was one of surprise and delight.
I really enjoyed meeting with the Crow Family this morning - they're going to have a blast in Southern California at Disneyland Resort, SeaWorld San Diego, and the San Diego Zoo and Safari Park!
SURFING CALIFORNIA: THE freeway was dark. Wisps of sea mist obscured the moon. At 2 a.m. there wasn’t another car on Highway 101, the southern extension of the Pacific Coast Highway that traces the edge of the continent from Orange County in California almost to the Oregon border. On the left side of the road as I drove south, miles of tract housing reached into the hills. Somewhere on the right, between the guardrail and the great void of the Pacific, was the entrance to the San Elijo campground. I’d already missed the turn three times. The lights on my 1977 Volkswagen Westfalia camper van were so dim they barely illuminated the exit signs. Bill and Diane Staggs, the owners of Vintage Surfari Wagons in Costa Mesa, Calif., where I rented the van, grew up in Southern California and have squatted at many of the 80-odd state parks between San Diego and San Francisco. “If you can’t find a campsite,” Bill told me as he handed me the keys to my van, “Diane and I usually park in a nice suburb and pul ...

Thanks to Raider Nation ... Blackout lifted for Raiders-Chargers season-finale SAN DIEGO (AP) — The San Diego Chargers say they have sold enough tickets to lift the local blackout for Sunday's season-finale against the rival Oakland Raiders. The sellout snaps a string of three straight blackouts for the Chargers, who will miss the playoffs for the third straight season. Overall, the Chargers had four games blacked out this year. The sellout is likely due to interest by Raiders fans in seeing their team's only Southern California appearance of the season. San Diego is 6-9 and the Raiders are 4-11. San Diego is expected to fire coach Norv Turner and likely general manager A.J. Smith.

About 700 people joined Shankar's wife, Sukanya, and family at the service held at a spiritual center in the coastal town about 25 miles north of San Diego. Indian sitar virtuoso Ravi Shankar dies at 92 With an instrument perplexing to most Westerners, Ravi Shankar helped connect the world through music. The sitar virtuoso hobnobbed with the Beatles, became a hippie musical icon and spearheaded the first rock benefit concert as he introduced traditional Indian ragas to Western audiences over nearly a century. From George Harrison to John Coltrane, from Yehudi Menuhin to David Crosby, his connections reflected music's universality, though a gap persisted between Shankar and many Western fans. Sometimes they mistook tuning for tunes, while he stood aghast at displays like Jimi Hendrix's burning guitar. Shankar died Tuesday at age 92. A statement on his website said he died in San Diego, near his Southern California home with his wife and younger daughter by his side. The musician's foundation issued a statement saying that he had suffered upper respiratory and heart problems and had undergone heart-valve replacement surgery last week. Indian Prime Minister Manm ...

A 68-year-old man has pleaded not guilty to killing his wife after police found her severed head in a freezer and her body parts cooking on a stove at their Southern California home. Frederick Hengl looked frail as he entered his plea, and his lawyer requested he receive medical attention, according to U-T San Diego. Police say they responded to neighbours' complaints about a foul odour coming from the couple's home in Oceanside last Friday. An officer who entered the home through a window said he saw three pans containing body parts of the victim, 73-year-old Anna Faris. It is believed she was killed sometime in November, but authorities have not determined how she died. There were numerous pieces of freshly cut bone found around the home, according to Deputy District Attorney Katherine Flaherty. A meat grinder, a saw, a boning knife and other cutting materials were also in the house but there was no evidence of cannibalism, she said. Neighbour Erick Chavez told U-T San Diego that the stench from the hou ...

The valley’s median price — half sold for more, half for less — rose 26 percent to $210,000 compared to October 2011, marking the fourth straight month of double-digit percentage increases in the median price, DataQuick reported. An important anniversary for industrial union organizing - the sit-down strike, as opposed to striking and leaving your workplace, the sit-down strike brings workplace democracy and workers' self-management to the fore ("building a new world in the shell of the old"). My hometown of Schenectady is credited with the first US sit-down strike - December 10, 1906, at the General Electric Works where 3,000 workers sat down on the job and stopped production to protest the dismissal of three fellow IWW members. And the sit-down strike is the inspiration for sit-ins that followed, most famously in the civil rights struggles. This weekend fellow workers in Southern California are attending organizer training in San Diego with Wobblies from LA, Orange County, Inland Empire and San Diego. Solidarity!

Too Real, Brad. Too Real: Prankster Brad Paisley ended the stateside leg of his Virtual Reality Tour with several dates in Southern California, one of which caused him to call the cops on his opening act. Paisley sent crew members dressed as Lt. Dangle from Comedy Central's Reno 911 onto the stage during The Band Perry's performance in San Diego. "We had just started our first song and we knew something was up when the audience started laughing," Reid Perry explains. Small price to pay, however, for such a good gig. "We're so grateful to Brad for inviting us be part of his touring family this past year and for being such a fun-loving host," Reid's sister Kimberly adds. "We just hope on the next tour he can buy his crew members some longer shorts!"
Thinking of the students and staff at Lynn University in Boca Raton today as they are getting ready for the debate.I remember 1996 well when the debate was held at The University of San Diego and we had to clear the female residence hall so a 'sweep' could be done with the secret service.and George Stephanopoulis rallying the students on campus. I still remember a student saying 'dude, watz going on' about the security and the way things were being done.(yes it was Southern California!!) Seems like yesterday and then again it was so many years ago!! Although it causes some twists and turns for the 'normal' college day, it really does have a lasting impact that the students will be able to say it was held at MY college.
This past week, I left the project I was on as my duties were pretty much completed and there was not a lot that I could do for them in the future. So Tammy and I decided that it would be best for her to be with her family in Port Huron, MI during her cancer treatments. They are going for a cure and not just remission. She is a great candidate for a cure as her cancer is very isolated and only affects her tonsil and one lymph node. I may be heading back to San Ramon / Danville CA before her treatments are done to start working on organizing the resources for the inspection of a project in San Diego that was assigned two years ago and just hadn’t started yet. It will begin in early March. We have been assigned many other projects in Southern California, so that will be where I hang my hat at least until I retire. Tammy and I are both excited about the possibility of getting back to warmer weather. It a bit cold in the North-East. Tammy is very fortunate to have her family and friends here to support her ...

The coast line in Southern California is constantly being polluted by feces with steroids, used condoms from the *** trade in Mexico, meth amphetamine waste, and all sorts of trash from Mexico, in order to kill the rich in California, and the world that made them so poor, after the Marines took it from them (California), that is why the Marines are the PERFECT candidates to take it over; 3 of the world’s largest USMC military bases are right here in San Diego, CA, at their borders. I say, Mr. President Obama & Michelle, send the Marines to capture the president of Mexico for these crimes, I personally (Major General Shawn Allen Schindler-Grayson, USMC) would like to lead this team of operatives, spies, and military personnel, into Mexico, to recapture our economic stability by bringing down the PRI/Mexican Mafia, that controls waste management in this 3rd world country. Josh Bauserman formed Emotion Sickness with Jeffrey Jackson in the Fall of 2005. In 2006 they released their self-titled EP and the opening track Fall recieved generous airplay on San Diego's Rock 1053. After a short break they began writing new material to enter the studio and in 2008 released the full length album Transparent Scene. Good Morning from Texas my friends and Happy Hump Day, On last Thursday, in my efforts to relocate back to Southern California as a "Lead Writer", I submitted a copyrighted script to the major cable networks for a new "scripted reality show" based in San Diego. The script features the life-styles of a group of attractive Latina-American women as they deal with issues of love, marriage, bad relationships, single parenting, lesbianism, sexual harrassment, partying, pro athletes, alcoholism, and all that comes with the territory. I've also recommended Christina Gonzales and her group of friends for role considerations, should my script be approved. Your prayers are both solicited and appreciated. Luv y'all.
On 9/11, I was in my car going to work and listening to "The Scott and B.R. Show" on AM1090 out of San Diego, when ABC News interrupted the broadcast with the news. After parking, I ran into a cafe and saw people crowding around a TV. A lawyer said "They'll have to tear those buildings down and rebuild them". When I got to the school office, one of my co-workers had her face buried in her hands. It was hard to work that day at all. I went to the local National Guard armory in Santa Ana after work to check in and there were guards with rifles posted. They told me to keep my cell on and be ready. At football practice, we took a knee as a team and said a prayer and for the only time in our lives, the skies above Southern California were silent, with the exception of a single Navy P-3 Orion.

Los Angeles Earthquake Today 2012 Rocks Southern California, Yorba Linda Los Angeles (LALATE) – A moderate Los Angeles earthquake today 2012 has rocked Southern California. The Los Angeles earthquake today August 29, 2012 was centered in Yorba Linda. But LALATE felt the quake, in a parked car, all the way up in Westwood (West Los Angeles) at the time. The Los Angeles quake is the latest in what officials have called a “swarm of quakes” striking Southern California since Sunday. As previously reported on LALATE, these quakes initially began Sunday centered east of San Diego. With the epicenter outside of El Centro, the quakes initially rocked communities east of San Diego Sunday through Tuesday. But that changed when one reported quake struck Malibu within the last twenty-four hours. That quake, clearly on a different fault line, impacted West Los Angeles residents of Pacific Palisades and Santa Monica. Today’s latest quake centered closer to Chino Hills was felt over a wider region. That derives f ...
Here are more earthquakes! I hope you're ready! A rash of up to 70 moderate earthquakes rattled Southern California on Sunday, shaking an area from rural Imperial County to the San Diego coast and north into the Coachella Valley. According to the USGS, the largest quake was 5.5-magnitude that rattled Brawley, Calif., small Imperial County farming town, just before 2 p.m. A 5.3 magnitude quake struck at 12:31 p.m. about three miles north-northwest of Brawley, according to Paul Caruso, a geophysicist with the U.S. Geological Survey. It was followed minutes later by a 4.9 magnitude quake.
Hi, Brods and Sis and Everyone To disabuse the "kingmaker" theory floated around all these years insofar as the Alpha Phi Omega (Philippines) Alumni Council of North America is concerned, please allow me to present an analysis based on empirical data that may represent a big picture of the APO-ACNA experiment. Please review Chart 1 and Chart 2. As we can tell, two (2) power houses -- Northern California and Southern California -- are both on top, with Texas a distant third. If we separate San Diego (2002 convention city), NorCal is even ahead. OR, if we add Nevada (2008 contender) to it, SoCal would be ahead. We conclude from the preponderance of evidence: * We have two (2) areas of power -- NorCal and SoCal * Above profile could encourage other areas to contend The data may be represented by Chart 3 as well. Losing at elections may be considered a negative. I should think so, because I represent that -3 across the NorCal column (yes, I ran three [3] times and was given up for dead until Brod Gene Licauco ...

Between the years 1945 and 1992 the United States government (like they care about you?) conducted 1,030 nuclear tests. Two hundred ten (210) were classified as atmospheric tests, 815 were detonated underground, and 5 were exploded underwater. One hundred (100) atmospheric tests and 804 underground tests were detonated at the Nevada Test Site (NTS). And it all happened just 50 miles west of Las Vegas (the wind blows from West to East). Many people died of Lukemia; and the US Government denied everything. Now the US Government is burying nuclear waste near (50 miles) the Colorado River, the water source for Las Vegas, Arizona, New Mexico, and Southern California, including Los Angeles and San Diego and water for much of California's farmland crops). SIGN SENATOR REID'S PETITION to prevent nuclear dumping in Nevada
In an atempt to understand the insanity of what happened in Aurora, CO I discovered these 40 facts in the case... James Eagan Holmes, 24, is the suspect in a shooting that killed or wounded 71 people early on July 20, 2012 in an Aurora, Colorado movie theater during the midnight showing of the Batman film, The Dark Night Rises. Holmes was born in the San Diego area of Southern California and lived his entire life in the Golden State, except for the last 11 months he was in Colorado doing research for a doctorate degree. James Holmes is accused of throwing two smoke bombs, then firing an AR-15 assault rifle (equipped with a high-capacity, drum-style ammunition clip), a Remington 12-gauge shotgun, and a .40-caliber handgun into a packed movie theater in the Denver suburb. 71 were shot, 13 were killed, and 58 were wounded in the Aurora, CO movie theater massacre. NOW Home | Next Post » Colorado shooting suspect was 'a bright guy,' former teacher says July 21, 2012 | 9:59 am 61 The suspected gunman in the Colorado movie theater shooting that killed 12 and injured dozens more was a bright student who “cared about his studies,” according to a teacher at his high school. Few details have emerged in the portrait of James E. Holmes, the 24-year-old former resident of San Diego, but many friends and acquaintances labeled him as brainy. Friends from his high school said Holmes took multiple advanced placement classes while at Westview High, and UC Riverside Chancellor Timothy P. White said that Holmes was an honor student as an undergraduate there. The suspect had been pursuing a doctorate in neuroscience at the University of Colorado Denver Anschutz Medical Campus in Aurora for a year, but had begun the process of withdrawing from the program last month, officials said. Opening Day for Del Mar Race Track is tomorrow with a great racecard. Friday is Opening Day at Saratoga with an even equally exciting first day racecard. This summer promises to yield great returns for everyone connected to the world of horse racing. Del Mar was created by Bing Crosby if you do not know that already. It is located in Southern California near San Diego. A great place to spend the summer. Saratoga is a very rich and old racetrack made famous by Edna Ferber in a novel called Saratoga Trunk. Saratoga is a great place in New York State in the Adirondacks, and is worth the time and money spent to visit, enjoy, and win a few races.
Forty five years ago my Mom and Dad gave me a one way plane ticket to California. I had a great time with family in Bellflower and Costa Mesa. South Coast Plaza shopping center in CM had only been open about a year and only had the one strip of shops which included May Co. and Sears. Six weeks later my whole family drove out where we settled in Norwalk for about 10 years. Lots of great memories of those early days in beautiful sunny Southern California. Thankful for being raised in RI with all the beauty that comes with the seasons and history of the early days of our great United States. Love now being in the North County of San Diego. Thank you Lord!

Latasha this is for you, Brian, Kaveh, remember George you guys use to compete against each other. I'm so happy I captured him on video showing the various steps and how "Spot Rexing" lives on. I had to post this to what it was like back when. The form of skating is known as "Spot Rexing", very popular around the southern California area, Los Angeles, Venice Beach area, and San Diego, a total of 28 dance movements along with todays dance steps. New Horizons became a Corporate promotional team for Pepsi-Cola, Dr. Pepper, Today are mothers and fathers of future skaters as we continue to skate, but not like we did back then. Its always here to remember what once was at decades ago..
What do you say about a man who would rather water his tomatoes in Huntersville, NC that own a gold mine in Southern California? 5,822 miles, 23 days, 17 states, $1,264.60 in gas, 14 different pillows, 5 selling venues, a few desperate days, countless new friends and memories and we are now back where we started. George, with his California tan, finally gets to do what comes natural in the morning (make his own brand of coffee and read a real Charlotte newspaper rather than the internet version) and I will spend days reviewing my notes and following up on leads and getting ready for the next time out. We won't wander so far for a while, but I must say that in spite of the trials, I think the adventure was worth it. There were so many unforgettable moments such as the flock of wild parrots squawking in the air and trees at the Kobey's Swap Meet in San Diego and the moment to moment vistas while driving in New Mexico, Nevada & Utah. Of course, the Grand Canyon. George's vertigo kicked in immediately ...
