San Diego State, UNLV and New Mexico were all out-hit today by their opponents, but all picked up wins anyway.
OK, let me see if I understand this: New Mexico is ranked number 16 in the NCAA's RPI rankings, one ahead of San Diego State at 17. New Mexico beat SDSU twice this year, including the conference championship yesterday on national TV. San Diego State is given a 4 seed in the Big Dance and New Mexico a 7! This would imply that New Mexico is ranked in the RPI range 25-28, not 16, while SDSU is given a seeding which implies an RPI of 13-16, despite their 17 RPI. I have never seen such a completely inexplicable seeding, based on the RPI which the NCAA has said numerous times is the primary factor. The RPI should have earned New Mexico a 4 and SDSU a 5. I don't see any major differences in regional strength that could explain this. I'm not normally that exercised over sports, but this is, frankly, ridiculous.
Cameron Bairstow scored 17 points to lead No. 20 New Mexico to a 64-58 victory over No. 8 San Diego State in the Mountain West Conference championship game Saturday, giving the Lobos the automatic berth into the NCAA tournament.

San Diego State Falls to New Mexico in Mountain West Tournament. San Diego State will remain a No. 3 Seed in the NCAA Tournament despite Upset.
wow great atmosphere in Vegas for that San Diego State/New Mexico game. Gosh I didn't know Spicoli was playing basketball for The Lobos what a game!
Over the last three years, but especially over the last three weeks, New Mexico and San Diego State have staked a claim as the premier rivalry in the Mountain West. Their season’s third meeting, this time for the tournament championship, didn’t disappoint. At the end, UNM cut down the nets at the Thomas & Mack Center for the third straight time. Story by J.R. Oppenheim, photo by Aaron Sweet. For more on this game, click the link posted in the comments.
Kings of the Mountain!. New Mexico knocks off San Diego State, 64-58, to claim 3rd straight tournament title.
We witnessed a great College Basketball game this afternoon, San Diego State vs. New Mexico, both nationally ranked teams! It was close throughout, with the Lobos beating SDSU at the end. Most every time the score was tied, my friend Randy Wight would tell Cel and I that the game was actually closer than the score indicated. I am ready for March madness!
LOBOS WIN; AGGIES PLAY AT 8 P.M. FREE THINKING FOLLOWS; TAKE YOUR FREE SHOT In a game with no real value except for seeding purposes, UNM defeated San Diego State, 64-58, after almost tossing the game away in the final minutes. The important game for State of New Mexico fans is upcoming at 8 p.m., and a strange situation has developed. The winner goes to the NCAA and the loser goes home and if the winner is Idaho, the fifth seed in the WAC tournament, it will go into the NCAA with a 17-17 record, playing in likely the weakest conference honored as Division I. That will likely give one of the four regional No. 1 seeds a free pass. Of course it probably won't be any different if the Aggies win. They split with Idaho in the regular season, and have shown no signs of getting better as the season has progressed. (I'm not sure how seeding is working in the NCAA this year, but could it be that UNM will face NMSU in the first round based on seeding? It would be an interesting match-up, similar to UNM-Harvard last ...
I the end of the New Mexico win over San Diego State I was jumping for joy. All of a sudden I realize that I was howling like a Lobo. What a way to celebrate my birthday. Go Lobos!
New Mexico Lobos win the Mountain West Championship!! Anther nail biter man!!! So glad we best San Diego State !! A tight game! That 3 by Kendall Williams was beautiful! Ha . So happy we won!!!
Well San Diego State came up a little short. I don't know about you but it sure seems like Barstow for New Mexico gets away with murder. Elbows flying all over the place. Let's hope they do great in the NCAA Tournament. GO AZTECS WE ARE VERY PROUD OF YOU!

This Mountain West Conference final is outstanding!! New Mexico and San Diego State are playing their guts out. All those basketball snobs that bad mouth the mid-major conferences can kiss my fat hairy backside!!
The two San Diego State fans in this video had moved to better seats for the Mountain West Conference tournament and were "out of control drunk for about ten minutes," according to our tipster. A New Mexico fan behind them called for security, and that's when one SDSU bro unleashed the biggest burn…
Florida, Arizona and Wichita State have sewn up No. 1 seeds come Selection Sunday. The question is who should be the fourth No. 1? Virginia's loss at Maryland probably took them out of the running although beating two of Duke, North Carolina and Syracuse could vault them back into the discussion. The Blue Devils and Orange also have shots with SU possibly getting the fourth No. 1 even with one more humongous win despite a free-fall towards the end of the regular season. Kansas with eight losses could make their case winning the Big 12 Tournament. A nine-loss Jayhawk squad should be a 2 seed however. Michigan, Villanova and San Diego State are the only other contenders for a No. 1 seed with Wisconsin losing at Nebraska. Another victory over New Mexico could be all the Aztecs need to snag a No. 1 seed. Sure most of the country would be up-and-arms on how could SDSU and the Shockers secure No. 1 seeds, but I say they deserve it. How many teams can say they won in Lawrence this year besides KU? No one. Villan ...
Xavier Thames and Matt Shrigley each made two free throws in the final 9 seconds to complete No. 10 San Diego State's rally from a 16-point second-half deficit for a 51-48 victory over No. 21 New Mexico on Saturday night to win the outright Mountain West Conference title.

Zach Gentry, 6'6', 225, pro type quarterback at Eldorado High School, Albuquerque is being looked at by several universities: Tennessee, Louisville, San Diego State, Maryland, TCU, Oklahoma St, Northwestern, New Mexico and New Mexico State. Yesterday, Coach Nick Saben of Alabama called him and according to this morning paper spoke to Zach for about 20 minutes. Zach said, "my head is still spinning". Zach said Coach Saben spoke of the success of the program, the facilities, sending guys to the NFL, academic excellence of the school and the top level program. Zach hopes to make some unofficial visits to some of the schools this spring and next fall make some official visits. He did not say who was tops in his mind right now, but it sounds like Coach Saben really impressed him. Well, I know which one I would select...
Free Play from Ross Benjamin San Diego State at Fresno State Play: Fresno State +4 Fresno State continues to get no respect from the book. Granted they will be facing a nationally ranked team today, but this is a club that's won 7 of their last 8-games, and has covered 9-games in a row with 6 of those coming as an underdog. The Bulldogs just don't beat themselves as they've committed just 8 turnovers or less in each of their last 5-games. As a matter of fact Fresno has a +35 turnover differential over their last 8 contests. They're one of the most improved teams in the country since the beginning of the season, and certainly the most improved in the Mountain West Conference. The Bulldogs are coming off a 76-56 win over Boise State as a 3.0 point home underdog. San Diego State enters today's game having lost their last 2 road games at New Mexico by 14, and at Wyoming by 6. Monitored by the Sports Watch Monitor
Free play from Strike Point Sports San Diego State -4 over Fresno State The Aztecs were pretty inept last weekend being upset and completely handled by New Mexico. I expect San Diego State to have a much better effort in this road game. Fresno State has been pretty much all over the map this season, and I think the road favorite has some atoning to do right before the conference tournament gets going in early March. Every league game counts the rest of the way now that the top of the Mountain West is up for grabs. They’ll wand to step up and come through before a couple of important games to finish the regular season. San Diego State bounces back here and cashes against the Bulldogs and I plan on cashing in again this weekend. Monitored by the Sports Watch Monitor

New Mexico ran to a 17-point lead and cruised to a convincing 68-56 Mountain West win over UNLV. It's San Diego State on Saturday!
With Boise State losing to San Diego State, here's what needs to happen for the Broncos to make it to the Mountain West Championship. If Utah State (6-1) beats Wyoming this week, the Aggies clinch the Mountain Division. They will play Fresno State for the title. Fresno State has already won the West Division and will host the game because it has the highest BCS ranking. If Utah State loses and Boise State (5-2) beats New Mexico, the Broncos then jump the Aggies and make it to the championship. If both teams lose, Utah State clinches. If both teams win, Utah State clinches.

Kansas men's basketball annually has one of the toughest schedules in the nation and its 2013-14 non-conference slate will be as competitive as ever with the likes of Duke, Colorado, Florida, New Mexico, Georgetown and San Diego State along with several other major conference favorites.
2014 San Diego (Calif.) St. Augustine wing Trey Kell has been offered by Gonzaga, Utah State and New Mexico per his AAU coach
A lot of San Diego State fans at Thomas & Mack. But, man, New Mexico travels well. Mountain West semifinal starts in five minutes.
Calling upsets: Michigan over Wisconsin, San Diego State over New Mexico and Missouri over Ole Miss. Huge day of hoops.
ITF: Congrats to San Diego State women and New Mexico men, winners of the 2013 MW Indoor T&F Championships!
basketball tournment is wide open if it start today. New Mexico, Colorado State, UNLV, San Diego State & Boise State could win it
To my friemds on Colorado: Sorry to hear about the CSU Ram loss to New Mexico. I predict that if CSU does not drop any more games in the regular season, they will make the NCAA Tourament. The primary reason is the number of seniors in their top six players. The committee generally likes teams that know its now or never.
Shae hits a three run bomb today against New Mexico State as the Rams win 10-9. In the second game they get down 14-4 in the forth and and the softball gods say na, na, na! Its not over until its over. CSU comes back and beat UMKC 17 to 16 in the 9th. CSU 4-0 this series so far. This team is going to make some noise this year!
How about them Sycamores? Indiana State men's basketball team have knocked off Ole Miss, The U, and Wichita State...all top teams in their respective conferences at the time they have played them...all on the road. Not to mention, taking New Mexico to OT and hanging with San Diego State, both ranked currently in the Top 25. They have two more contests vs. Top 25 teams in Wichita State and Creighton, the two teams ahead of them in their conference, but good friggin' gravy...these guys may get some looks for some post-season play even if they don't win their conference. NIT at the very least...
LA Kings get first win of the season, university of Arizona beats USC and San Diego State blows out New Mexico. Good sports day.
I have no idea what Monday's rankings will be?? The bodies are all over with (Duke lost to Miami), (Syracuse lost to Villanova), (Louisville lost to Villanova, & Georgetown), (Arizona lost to UCLA), (Butler lost to LaSalle), (Kansas State lost to Kansas & Iowa State), (Minnesota lost to Northwestern & Wisconsin), (New Mexico lost to San Diego State), (Creighton lost to Drake), (N.C. State lost to Wake Forest), (VCU lost to La Salle). Butler may even move up with its lose?? - or could drop 3 spots.
Butler, Gonzaga are legit final four threats. San Diego State, New Mexico, VCU, Creighton, Wichita St, all can make tourney runs
No. 15 New Mexico was held to 34 points in a loss at San Diego State, the Lobos lowest point total in the shot-clock era.
After falling out of the top 25, San Diego State dominated New Mexico at home Saturday afternoon, holding them to just 34 points on 11-44 shooting.
UPSET:New Mexico goes down to unranked San Diego State 55-34. Total of 5 Top 15 teams (33%) have lost to unranked teams so far today.
College Basketball No. 15 New Mexico 34 San Diego State 55 - Final Did you watch the game? Leave a COMMENT to tell us what you think went wrong for the Lobos today.
San Diego State trying to get back that No. 15 ranking. Considering that they are winning 33-19 at halftime against the team that had that ranking now...they could do it today. SDSU over New Mexico...ALL DAY!
"Ay Naku". Shockwave just crashed for the umpteenth time. Speaking of crashing, New Mexico is trailing San Diego State 33-19 at the half. Lobos can't hit a basket to save their lives...7-22 from the field. At least Kendall Williams showed up to play. Where are the other guys?
Hey Zoners! The College Basketball season is heating up and there are few great games on today. Right now on ESPNU, Villanova is giving Syracuse all they can handle in Philadelphia in the 2nd Half. Louisville is hoping to rebound from back to back losses to Syracuse and Villanova, as they square off with Georgetown in our nation's capital on ESPN. Later on today on ESPN, first place in the Big 12 is up for grabs, as Boomer Sooner vs. Rock Chalk Jayhawk, Oklahoma at Kansas. Two of the best in the Mountain West will do battle in San Diego, as New Mexico is at San Diego State on the NBC Sports Network. We're still a week away from Super Bowl XLVII, let the college kids fill your sports appetite in the meantime.
New Mexico-San Diego St. Preview STATS LLC New Mexico will lead the Mountain West after Saturday's showdown at San Diego State no matter the result, but a victory could put the Lobos firmly in control of the conference race for now. The No. 15 Lobos seek their fifth straight win in the teams' first meeting since New Mexico pulled off the upset in the conference tournament final last season. New Mexico (17-2, 4-0) has made things interesting during its four-game run, winning three times by five points, including once in overtime. The Lobos nearly blew a 22-point lead against Colorado State on Wednesday before hanging on for a 66-61 victory. Coach Steve Alford wasn't discouraged by his team almost squandering the big lead as it dealt the Rams, one of the top rebounding teams in the nation, their fourth loss in 19 games this season. Colorado State held a 42-28 edge on the glass. "I'm extremely pleased with our basketball team," he said. "We're pretty good. We're a pretty good basketball team and I think we'r ...
Wyoming made its first three 3-pt shots of the game to lead 9-3 before the wheels came off. Fresno State used a stingy defense and shot an uncharacteristic 64.7% from the floor to lead by 10 at halftime. Coach Rodney Terry used the combination of Jerry Brown and Tanner Giddings at the post for the last 14 minutes of the first half. And the combo produced scoring a combined 14 points. Giddings, who didn’t play against No. 15 San Diego State last week and recorded just 20 minutes versus No. 19 New Mexico, scored eight of the Bulldogs 26 first half points.
San Diego State junior guard Jamaal Franklin has been named Mountain West Co-Player of the Week, the league announced Monday morning. Franklin shares his fourth career award with New Mexico's Alex Kirk.
College Basketball takes center stage now that College Football is over. The Big 10 is really good. I am guessing about 7 teams make the dance. Ohio State may be the 4th or 5th best team in the league and still be a top 15 team. The other conference I follow the Mountain West could be the second best conference behind the Big 10, They are projecting 6 teams out of 9 make the dance. That would be incredible. San Diego State is really talented. New Mexico beat Cincinnati when they were unbeaten at Cincinnati. UNLV might have the best freshmen in the country and have to played with thier whole team yet. Tonight could be the return of Mike Moser. They also open up with a brutal start to confernce with tonights game at New Mexico. They then come home to face Air Force and then next week travel to San Diego State and Colorado State. If they get through this part of the schedule 2-2 or 3-1 watch out. Anthony Benett is the freshmen if you get a chance watch him play. 6'8 built like a man and can dom ...
Hmm... University of New Mexico or San Diego State...? I think I'm gonna have to go with Cali on this one.
Really excited to watch race for the MWC championship. New Mexico, UNLV and San Diego State all teams that could make impact in NCAA tourney
New Mexico Women's Basketball is assisting the Teens for Jeans campaign and taking donated jeans at the San Diego State game on January 26th. The Lobos are looking for your help to clothe homeless teens in New Mexico.
How about Rocky Long ? Look at the talent San Diego State sent to the NFL last spring: Hillman is the 1 or 1A running back for the Broncos, Lindley is the starting QB for the Cardinals, Miles Burris is starting at LB for the Raiders. So what did Rocky do this year? He led the Aztecs to a 9-3 record and a share of MWC title with the win today at Wyoming. I'd written that I liked Long's hiring because I figured that anybody who could win as New Mexico's coach would have a lot of success at SDSU. But I didn't expect the Aztecs to go 9-3 this year. Any win at Wyoming is a big one for the Aztecs. It's like winning on the moon. I covered the 52-51 loss there. I covered another defeat in which the Aztecs never scored a TD, even though Marshall Faulk and Darnay Scott were in the lineup. I wonder what Rocky Long would've done with that team.
Who do you think will be in the Gildan New Mexico Bowl this year? Wesley Henderson would love to see Boise, I'd love to see Notre Dame Football... Erik Gee would love to see the Oklahoma Sooners - Official Page... Jeff Siembieda would love to see San Diego State University - The Official Page. Lee Roy Lucero would love to see University of New Mexico. What about you College Football fans?
San Diego State recorded its 11th straight victory with a hard-fought three-set (26-24, 29-27, 25-16) win over New Mexico at the Jonson Center in Albuquerque Saturday afternoon.
I have had the opportunity to coach some great young ladies over the past 10 years. Today 4 of them signed their letter's of intent to play softball and realize their dreams. Congratulations to Ane Pahulu (Mississippi Valley University), Erica Romero (San Diego State), Alyssa Cornejo (Eastern New Mexico) & Madison Murphy (Cal State Dominguez Hills). Continue the hard work Ladies the sky is the limit.

Tough loss for the Rebs last night. ranked nationally San Diego State escaped with a 2-1 win in Las Vegas after trailing UNLV at the half. Next is New Mexico sunday afternoon at 1:00pm.
Congratulations to Coach Birmingham and the New Mexico Lobos Baseball team for taking the Mountain West Championship in Las Vegas Nevada. Final score against San Diego State was 22-3. Looking Forward to watching the Lobos at the regionals and hoping they get a decent draw. Coach Birminghams attitude that you can win with New Mexico kids is great and he is having success with this philosophy. See everyone in Omaha. GO LOBOS
TCU can earn share of Mountain West title today by beating San Diego State (would match New Mexico at 18-6; they split 6 head-to-head).
