This screen test features James Dean and his co-stars Natalie Wood and Sal Mineo (both of whom would also die young) doing a key scene in the film "Rebel Without a Cause" between the three characters. The screen test ends with the three posing together and goofing off a bit. Dean’s most popular film remains Rebel Without a Cause, which was released less than one month after his death. The film’s poster features Dean striking a classic pose in his famous red jacket. However, in the original Warner Bros. screen test for the film you won’t see the bright red jacket, since it was filmed in black and white. I'm a girl in Love but the problem is I'm in love with the late James Dean

Happy Birthday VALERIE HARPER!! An American actress, known for her role as Rhoda Morgenstern on the 1970s television show The Mary Tyler Moore Show, and for her starring roles on the sitcoms Rhoda (a spin-off of The Mary Tyler Moore Show) and Valerie. Early TV-comedy influences included Lucille Ball, Jackie Gleason, Joan Davis, Your Show of Shows, and, later, Mary Tyler Moore in The *** Van *** Show. She attended Lincoln High School in Jersey City, and finished high school at the private Young Professionals School on West 56th Street, where classmates included Sal Mineo, Barbara Dana, Tuesday Weld, and Carol Lynley. Happy birthday to very talented Robert Cabot "Bobby" Sherman, Jr. (born July 22, 1943), an American singer, actor and occasional songwriter, who became a popular teen idol in the late 1960s and early 1970s. He graduated in 1961 from Birmingham High School in Van Nuys, California. Sherman attended Pierce College in Woodland Hills, California. Bobby's interest in music began at age 11 when he learned to play the trumpet. He eventually progressed to playing 16 musical instruments. At Birmingham High School Bobby played football, joined a dance band, and discovered his love for singing. From the time he was in high school, Bobby knew that he wanted to be some type of performer, but wasn't sure how to make it happen. In 1962 Sal Mineo took Sherman under his wing and wrote two songs for him as well as arranging for Sherman to record the songs, then in 1964 when Sherman was asked by Mineo to sing with his old band at a Hollywood party (there were many actors and agents in attendance) he made such an impression a ...
On this day in 1944, seventy years ago, tens of thousands of soldiers from the U.S. and other allied nations launched a massive military mission to take back France and eventually Europe from Nazi Germany. These men, most of them under 30, journeyed on boats from Great Britain across the rough English Channel to make a surprise amphibious landing on the beaches of Normandy, France. Thousands of them died before they even reached the sand. But the rest of them fought through Hitler's defense lines, allowing allied forces to get into Europe and defeat the Nazis. The 1962 film "The Longest Day" depicts this epic moment in World War II. It is a spectacular movie that covers the events of D-Day with a dozen different plots and a hundred very realistic characters on both sides of the fight. The movie is packed with the biggest actors of the 1960's, such as John Wayne, Richard Burton, Henry Fonda, Robert Mitchum, Edmund O'Brien, Peter Lawford, and even Sal Mineo, Paul Anka, Robert Wagner, Sean Connery, Red ...
I've never seen this television show with Phil Spector, Sal Mineo, and the Dave Clark Five. I could do without the interpretive dance sequences but overall this was pretty fascinating.
Here's something interesting to me, if maybe not everybody else, but Johnny D. Boggs and David Morrell might take note. I watched a couple of John Ford pictures over the last couple of nights. The first was CHEYENNE AUTUMN, which I remember from many years ago, and which I thought was a dud, at the time, but watching it forty years later, I liked it more. It's beautifully photographed, of course, which you'd expect of a Ford, but the issue is its inconsistency of tone. Good cast, although Sal Mineo makes for a lousy Indian. Widmark is very good. The army stuff works better than the Indian stuff. The other movie was THE LOST PATROL, from 1934, which, for all its generic conventions, is still compelling, and claustrophobic, the guys in the desert being picked off one by one by the invisible Bedouin enemy. I had a notion. Watching a Ford from the 1930's, you cut him some slack. Maybe that's true of watching a Ford from the 1960's, seen now through the mists of time. Nothing will ever rescue SEVEN ...

I watched a good portion of the film "The Greatest Story Ever Told" last night. This is an early '60s Hollywood extravaganza about the life and death of Jesus. It has lots of theatrical flair but not much in the way of historical accuracy. It has a star-studded cast too: John Wayne, Jose Ferrer, Pat Boone, Sal Mineo, Charlton Heston, Max Von Sydow and other big names of the day. Claud Rains, as Herod, is especially riveting in an evil sort of way. Despite all its' grandiosity, the film reminded me of the religious significance of this week. Whether this really is the "greatest story" is not the point. The point is that some things are more important than peeps and chocolate.

Watching the movie The Gene Krupa Story. It has become Sal Mineo meets Reefer Madness.
"Somebody Up There Likes Me" (1956) - Beaten as a child, Rocky Barbella lives a tough life growing up on the mean streets of New York City. Rocky seems to be heading to an early grave or life in prison. However, after changing his name to Graziano, Rocky has a shot at becoming the middle weight boxing champion of the world . . . if he can escape his past. Paul Newman gets his big break playing the role of Rocky Graziano, a role that was orginally intended for James Dean, in this biographical picture. The movie has a definite 50's gritty vibe as many of the scenes were filmed out on location. The cast is excellent, with many actors (Steve McQueen, Sal Mineo, and more) going on to bigger roles in their careers. For me, the most powerful scene comes near the end of the film between Rocky and his drunken father, played by Harold Stone. It is heart breaking to watch the two actors evoke a relationship based upon pain and unfulfilled dreams. This is a dated movie, but I recommend this film.
Just a note of interest. Since most psychobilly cats at least have somewhat of an interest in 1950s culture, (if not a huge interest) just wanted to let you all know that the Epicenter Movie theater uptown will be showing the granddaddy of all 1950s juvenile delinquent flicks Rebel Without A CAUSE (w/ James Dean, Natalie Wood & Sal Mineo) sometime in May, for one night only. (date not set yet, but it'll be a tuesday night) Just wondered if there would be any interest in the group here.

I'm watching GEORGE WHITE'S SCANDALS, a B musical which stars Joan Davis, Jack Haley and Margaret Hamilton, because I love Joan and Maggie. Jack and Maggie are playing siblings. Now THERE'S news: The Tin Man and the Wicked Witch of the West were siblings? And the Wicked Witch of the East was Westie's sister, which means she's the Tin Man's sister too. But he became tin because the Witch had enchanted his ax to keep lopping off his parts, which were then each replaced by prosthetic tin parts. My, what severe sibling rivalry! (Gene Krupa is in the movie also, but unfortunately, it's the real Gene Krupa, and not my darling Sal Mineo.) Joan, looking into her make-up mirror in her dressing room: "My this mirror has aged."
Some TV show coolness from the mid sixties. The Dave Clark Five are the featured group. Lots of songs along with sixties style dancing stuff. Sal Mineo is the host along with Phil Spector. Cool black & white film in the middle of the show.

Giant Giant is a 1956 American drama film, directed by George Stevens from a screenplay adapted by Fred Guiol and Ivan Moffat from the novel by Edna Ferber. The film stars Elizabeth Taylor, Rock Hudson and James Dean and features Carroll Baker, Jane Withers, Chill Wills, Mercedes McCambridge, Dennis Hopper, Sal Mineo, Rod Taylor, Elsa Cardenas and Earl Holliman. Giant was the last of James Dean's three films as a leading actor, and earned him his second and last Academy Award nomination – he was killed in a car accident before the film was released. Nick Adams was called in to do some voice-over dubbing for Dean's role. In 2005, the film was selected for preservation in the United States National Film Registry by the Library of Congress as being "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant". In 1954, Krupa returned to Hollywood, to appear in such films as The Glenn Miller Story and The Benny Goodman Story. In 1959, the movie biography, The Gene Krupa Story, was released; Sal Mineo portrayed Krupa, and the film had a cameo appearance by Red Nichols. Dave Frishberg, a pianist who played with Krupa, was particularly struck by the accuracy of one key moment in the film. "The scene where the Krupa character drops his sticks during the big solo, and the audience realizes that he's "back on the stuff." I remember at least a couple of occasions in real life when Gene dropped a stick, and people in the audience began whispering among themselves and pointing at Gene."

For your reading pleasure, ( if you like to read); Creepy places that I've painted part one: The old Central Jail in Lincoln Heights. The land where the old Central Jail sits in Lincoln Heights has held prisoners since the historic California Gold Rush. The first prisoners were kept in an adobe building shackled to iron holders attached to logs so as not to escape. As the city grew the old jail became The Eastside Police Station and extensions were added onto the original building. In 1931 the old jail was demolished to make room for the new Lincoln Heights jail. It was constructed in the art deco style of what is known as "Bauhaus Modern". Mexican American youths were held there during the Zoot Suit Riots as well as the rioters of the Watts Riots. In 1951 seven young men were arrested in Elysian Park and booked into the jail. An event known as "Bloody Christmas" took place in which about 50 L.A.P.D. officers brutally beat the seven prisoners. The 1966 movie L.A. Confidential attempted to retell that sto ...

I loved this theatre in Lubbock, Texas so much that when my husband and I owned our own movie chain in the AZ White Mountains, we named one of our theatres Winchester. It was most apropos as the town was Western and the folks loved it. In 1969 at the original Winchester, I saw Stanley Kubrick's 2001:Space Odyssey & the rollicking musical Paint Your Wagon with Clint Eastwood as Pardner & Lee Majors as Ben; the entire cast was amazing. Too many films to name but I also recall my freshman year at Texas Tech, they revisited Gone With the Wind...it was magical! LOVED the Granada Theatre in Plainview too...in the 1950's there were as many as 2 film releases a week & you could stay even when they had to "clean & clear" I remember seeing Edna Ferber's GIANT 10 times at the age of 8! We are watching "The Longest Day" here in the office. The 1962 film with John Wayne, Richard Burton, Sal Mineo, Sean Connery, Robert Mitchum Henry Fonda, Paul Anka, Red Buttons, Eddie Albert, Fabian, Peter Lawford and Roddy McDowell that depicts the events of D-Day, told on a grand scale from both the Allied and German points of view. GREAT MOVIE! Of course my boss who is about 15 years younger than me said he doesn't know who any of those people are except John Wayne. Slam! ~rgw
Elizabeth Taylor fans: If you've missed her three biggest movies, I urge you to see them; all are available on DVD. GIANT (1956): A giant of a movie, it had a large *** cast, including Rock Hudson, James Dean, Sal Mineo, and Mercedes McCambridge, won an Oscan nomination or her performance as Hudson's *** sister. RAINTREE COUNTY (1957): An epic Civil War romance filmed on a scale to match GONE WITH THE WIND, it was filmed on location I Danville,Kentucky, Reelfoot Lake, Tennessee, and Natchez, Mississippi. Taylor plays a character very much like Scarlett O'Hara. CLEOPATRA (1963): The most expensive (adjusted for inflation) movie ever made, and I looks it.Taylor received Oscar nominations for all three. Each movie is berween 3 1/2 and 4 hours long, which should be enough to satisfy any Elizabeth Taylor fan. Happy viewing, and make a BIG batch of popcorn!
Seems fitting that on Memorial Day I watch the greatest movie made about the Greatest Generation, "The Longest Day". It also seems only fitting that when you make a movie about the one operation that would either make or break the establishment of the second front in Europe it should be one of those movies with everyone in it. The Longest Day does have the 'longest list' of the best of the best of Hollywood talent. Who was in it? Try the likes of Eddie Albert, Paul Anka, Richard Burton, Red Buttons, Mel Ferrer, Fabian, Sean Connery, Henry Fonda, Peter Lawford, Jeffrey Hunter, Curd Jurgens, Robert Mitchum, Sal Mineo, Roddy McDowall, Robert Ryan, George Segal, Rod Steiger, Robert Wagner, Richard Dawson and of course the unforgettable guy you just can't throw an invasion without, John Wayne. You needed the best to represent the best and so thanks to all those who landed on those beaches and never got off of them. We will remember them.

Mº Leonard Rosenman's music speaks for itself, the real voice of the characters, in this western directed by Don Siegel in 1967, starring Henry Fonda, Anne Baxter, Dan Duryea, Michael Parks, and Sal Mineo. (The main titles features the song "Stranger on the run", written by Kay Scott, and sung by Bill Anderson)
General PSA: Sal Mineo and Ralph Macchio. Not the same person.
February 12 37 year old Sal Mineo, a singer and actor who reached number nine on the Billboard chart in 1957 with "Start Movin' In My Direction", was stabbed to death by an unknown assailant. Over three years later, a man named Lionel Williams was tried and convicted for the murder. 1976
Found a DVD copy of West Side Story at Walmart and watched it last night. In my personal but reliable opinion, it hasn’t aged well. All the players are wearing orange make-up, not only the Sharks, the Puerto Ricans, but also the Jets, who are supposed to be mainly “Polacks.” They say stuff like “Cool it, Daddy-O.” Natalie Wood puts on a bad P-R accent and doesn’t do her own singing, it’s done by a trained soprano who sounds glassy and has a strong vibrato (or maybe it's a tremolo), very operatic, and it just sounds wrong. Rita Moreno is good. Nobody else is. The sets are cheesy, dark & depressing. On my first visit to New York City sometime around 1973 or 4, I walked through Avenues A, B & C where a lot of Puerto Ricans lived and I was in awe of their good looks. I couldn’t stop smiling at them. But none of the actors playing Ricans in the movie are especially beautiful. Disappointing. And I thought Sal Mineo was in the movie but he wasn’t. Another disappointment. Good thing it only cos ...
I'm trying to think of a book I read back in the day that I want to find, but I can't remember the title. Does anybody know of a book that the main character is a high school girl, I think her name was "Blue", that was homeschooled by her weird dad who was some sort of economics professor and always drank George T. Stagg bourbon (weird details are all I have left). She falls in with a group of popular kids called the Bluebloods, and they call her "Olives" because she got a "martini with three olives" like Audrey Hepburn at their first party and then threw up. She makes a ton of movie/literary/film critic references, and there is one dude in the book she refers to as the "Sal Mineo" of the story. Does this ring a bell with anybody
Nassar/Sadat (both of whom I'll get to in depth), 1949-1967 Israel had the support of the U.S. and most of western Europe. But it hit the fan almost everyday. I don't have the link yet, that's next, but look up the film, "Exodus", with Paul Newman, Sal Mineo, et al. For now let's look back to when Israel bacame a modern nation:
My shouting "SERPENTINE!" at the screen didn't help Sal Mineo at all.
Just watched a movie about Rocky Graziano with Paul Newman and Sal Mineo and was reminded of watching the Friday Night Fights with my Dad. I knew more about boxing than most girls my age. Also saw a movie with Joanne Woodward and realize now what an excellent actress she was. I just love the old movies!
Sal Mineo was such a hunk and a great actor. He was taken from this world way too soon
Which Sal Mineo films would you recommend? Also, any chance you might profile him for Scandals?

My brother has a cousin of this car. They were called "muscle cars," weren't they? It suddenly hits me. I wasn't the only boy in the house to be fascinated with fast cars, motorcycles, leather jackets, tattoos, five o'clock shadow, ducktail haircuts dripping with varnish, and a pack of cigarets tucked in a rolled sleeve. Well, maybe David Nova wasn't as fascinated with all those things as I, and I'm willing to bet a stranger watching us would only have remarked that the fat little *** brother sure did stare at those punks.

Watching the Patty Duke episode where is showing Sal Mineo around the school. Almost as much fun as the Sammy Davis Jr one.
Actor Sal Mineo (1939-1976) lived just 37 years, but as this striking biography vividly shows, in that short span he experienced many of life's extremes. This Bronx-born son of Sicilian coffin makers went rapidly from Rebel Without A Cause stardom to sudden obscurity while still in his mid-twenties;...

"Rebel Without a Cause" (1955) is one of those classic American films that you often hear critics mention... and for good reason too. I first discovered this movie during my film studies class at Queen's University in my first year. We had to do a major case study on it and I think I did well if I recall. :) The film is a drama about emotionally confused middle class teens and deals with the themes of generational conflict, parenting roles, and the moral decay of American youth. The film starred the iconic James Dean (in his defining role), the lovely Natalie Wood ("Miricle on 34th St.", "West Side Story" and "Gypsy") and Sal Mineo ("Exodus", "The Longest Day"). Originally the movie was to be a black and white picture and it began filming that way. The studio thought it would amount to a B-Movie and didn't want to waste its coloured film on it. However with the rise in stardom for Dean (coming off his Oscar nominated role in "East of Eden" (1955)) and basically becoming like a young Brad Pitt with the fan ...

Just got done watching "Rebel Without A Cause" on TCM... They weren't subtle at all naming Sal Mineo's character "Plato"... How did that movie get by 1950's censors?

Watching Rebel Without a Cause. Sad knowing that James Dean, Natalie Wood, and Sal Mineo died young, tragic deaths. Seen movie many times.

Overview of Rebel Without a Cause, 1955, directed by Nicholas Ray, with James Dean, Natalie Wood, Sal Mineo, at Turner Classic Movies
One of the most bizarre Letterman segments ever, complete with a Sal Mineo reference and mild roughhousing by the host.
Dave Letterman said looks like Sal Mineo. I totally see that. He was in Rebel Without a Cause, people.
I love watching David Letterman make Justin Bieber uncomfortable! Sal Mineo!! I knew that!!!

Chilling Monday night watching Columbo on DVR - with Sal Mineo murdered in TV in 1975, and in life in 1976! Some pain never abates.
A Case of Immunity - with Sal Mineo ... OH MY!!! And I think Hector Elizondo knows he's not gonna get away with it. 8-)
The creator of this fan video for the song 'Just Like a Movie Star' by the Sixths obviously doesn't know who Sal Mineo was.
Thanks for keeping in my obsessive rambling about posthumously stalking Sal Mineo! My weirdness is forever immortalized. :)
Was watching "TCM" last night and didn't even know it waas raining. Sal Mineo in "The Young Don't Cry", never seen, good. Then "A Summer Place" with Troy Donohue and Sandra Dee. WOW, what happened to those kind of movies. Implied sex was the best.
An A Train Rant: thank God for iPad earphones...I traveled uptown this evening in a crowded subway car. I sat between two men; one read and commented extensively, in two languages, on sexploits in the news in today's Post. Without my electronics I would be lost in their world of call and response, and not in my world reading a new biography of Sal Mineo.
This photo is so sad to me. Sal Mineo was murdered, James Dean died in a car crash and Natalie Wood drowned
James Dean, Sal Mineo & Natalie Wood in a screen test for 1955's "Rebel Without A Cause." Second part has no audio.

When I am eighty, I want to be able to still look at something... anything... anyone... with the mixture of wonder and desire that you could see in Sal Mineo's eyes in "Rebel Without a Cause"... As he gazed at Natalie Wood and James Dean... For when all desire is gone, the soul has already moved on... And the body that remains behind is nothing more than an abandoned property.

This is a very rare footage for Rebel Without a cause. Watch how he interacts with male co-star Sal Mineo. LUV IT!
Having recently read the excellent biography of the actor Sal Mineo by Michael Gregg Michaud-I decided that it was high time for me to finally watch "Rebel Without A Cause" Mineo's 1st film staring James Dean and Natalie Wood. What a great film- and yes there are wet tissues around. Mineo had such an innate raw talent that it made me think sadly of that small word "If" which can actually be so big. If only his mother hadn't so mis-managed his career-passing on a lucrative 7 year contract with one of the major studios which could have driven his career to much deserved greater heights; If only his family had not fed off of him like leeches causing him to spend a life in debt. His mother, Josephine, actually had the nerve to file an inflated claim against his estate after his tragic death, for his burial expenses. It's also interesting to note that all 3 of these beautiful talented (Mineo & Dean were drop dead gorgeous) and so was Wood-if that's your thing-met with tragic deaths far too young. Gerry Bur ...
