Clovis Police Arrest Two Home Invasion Robbery Suspects Clovis Police detectives have arrested two of three home invasion suspects, a man and a woman, in a crime that took place just after 3 o’clock in the afternoon on December 14, 2013. As you may recall, three boys under the age of 18 were in the house at the time. One of the suspects hit a 17-year-old in the face with a handgun. The victim was taken to the hospital for treatment of a cut lip. All three victims’ hands had been duct taped together. The trio specifically targeted and ransacked a home in the 3300 block of Loyola, although there is no direct connection between the victims and the suspects. The thieves stole items such as money, jewelry and electronics. Fortunately, no one was seriously hurt. In custody are 41-year-old Christopher Copeland and 21-year-old Breanna Allen both of Fresno. Good stuff -- I'm particularly interested in care, shelter, evacuation planning & preparation for our community members with special challenges in emergencies -- and from among that diversity, also, maybe especially, for our neighbors who are homeless. I've been asked to liaise with an Office of Emergency Services workgroup for the Sacramento County Human Services Coordinating Council. I've always been interested in what sort of planning is in place to evacuate our disabled from river camps and high homeless services areas. ...makes me shudder when I see the flood barrier gates near 65th on J & H Streets and 12th, 16th & Del Paso / Garden Hwy -- I guess I get to find out a bit.

Rancho Cordova, CA - Sacramento County Sheriff's detectives believe they have narrowed the time and location where an Albert Einstein Middle School eighth-grader was murdered 10 days ago. According to sheriff's detective Tony Turnbull, 13-year-old Jessica Funk-Haslam was slain near the dugout of a baseball field at Rosemont Community Park where she was found and there was no other crime scene. A woman, who was walking through the park on March 6, found the teen's body and called police. The Sacramento County coroner said the cause of death was a combination of blunt force trauma to the head, asphyxia and a stab wound to the neck. Investigators did not find a weapon at the crime scene, but it appears the killer used an edged weapon, Turnbull said. Detectives believe Jessica was murdered sometime between 8 p.m. and 10 p.m. Monday, March 5 and they learned Funk-Haslam took a light rail train and bus to get to the park, according to Turnbull. "Jessica was there for a lengthy period of time before she died," s ...

PLEASE, please be more aware what you are feeding your dogs. It does not cost you less by purchasing inexpensive dog food. It ends up costing you more due to the medical bills you will have due to the junk they put in the dog food. The article below is not surprising in the pet food industry. It is actually the norm. Will someone please explain how “a 5-foot-high pile of dead and bloated dairy cows” cooked for 90 minutes can be considered nutrition? Anyone? The Sacramento Bee news recently posted a story about an area rendering plant that needs to move due to future residential growth that will surround the plant. “Sacramento County and Rancho Cordova have said yes to developers’ plans for tens of thousands of new homes in the fields around the rendering plant.” The move of this rendering facility aside, here are the first two paragraphs of the Sacramento Bee article… “The sign above the door at the Sacramento Rendering Company plant offers a blunt clue about what lies inside. Dear Friends, Judy and I spent many late nights discussing my decision to run for County Supervisor. We agreed that I should only run if I felt I could make a real difference on the Board, and in our community. For 23 years, I have committed myself to the service of my community, first as a neighborhood leader, then a planning commissioner, and the past five as a member of the Sacramento City Unified School District Board of Education. From all of this, I have experienced a growing desire to serve our neighbors, particularly those whose lives have seen and continue to see great challenges. District 2, and Sacramento County as a whole, is a wonderful place to live for many of us. For others, the difficult times of the past six years have taken a tremendous toll. Many of you know that my childhood was not an easy one. Raised by a single mother whose alcoholism and drug addiction led to her death when I was just a boy, I know what it means to be on public assistance, not knowing one day to the next if ...

Written in response to a comment below, but worth sharing with all our friends here: Kimberly Rose, Natomas is a great community! If you read our posts here and our online newspaper at you will see many wonderful people, organizations, events & more which make this neighborhood a special place to live and work. Please don't mistake being informed about crime, for living in a "bad" neighborhood. We only cover Natomas, so all of our information is area specific. There is crime, vandalism and - yes - even naked people high in drugs, in other parts of Sacramento County. You're just not going to read about that here. Natomas is a unique community in that many of our neighbors are engaged and connected to each other through neighborhood watches, HOAs, community groups and long-established online communities such as this one - one of the reasons law enforcement is often successful in nabbing "bad guys" in Natomas. If you want more information on how to get involved, send us a note at editorand we will be happy t ...

So for several years I had a wonderfully uninteresting, and fabulously spectacular job, working as a sort of electrician. I never had to get my hands dirty, my job was to do inspections. Of utility poles. I was a pole inspector. Take it in. Let it all out. Moving on. So I would have to go to every utility pole in Sacramento County. All of them. Take a picture, GPS setting, go down an inspection check list, and then move on. Sometimes a couple hundred times a day. Pretty monotonous. And beautiful. Amazing scenery. So one time, I had to avoid doing a particular stretch of lines, because in the field was an immense black bull. Just enormous. The field was his. He could have it. Until my boss. "You gotta do it. They've all gotta get done." So off to work I go. It's a lovely day, kind of overcast, so I grab my map bag, and I hop the barbed wire fence to make the trek out to the first pole. Maybe fifty yards from the fence. Done. Easy peasy. Off to the second one in, probably about another hundred yards away, b ...

Americans want Congress to focus on jobs, not waste time and taxpayer money voting 37 times to take away patient protections from middle class families. The Supreme Court has ruled, and ACA is now law. It’s not perfect, and it’s not the law I would have proposed because it doesn’t do enough to address the cost of care. But we don’t want to go back to a time when children faced discrimination due to pre-existing conditions, when students and young adults were kicked off their parents’ insurance, and when women had to pay more for insurance than men just because of their gender. Now we need to move past partisan bickering and start working on ways we can drive healthcare costs down. For years, we’ve been paying more and more for healthcare, and getting less and less. As a doctor and former Chief Medical Officer for Sacramento County, I know there are many places we can find savings.

Cancer Rates Drop After Nuclear Reactor Closes Source: Medscape Medical News Roxanne Nelson Apr 03, 2013 The closure of a nuclear reactor could be linked to a long-term decrease in the incidence of cancer. Since the Rancho Seco nuclear reactor, located in Sacramento County, California, closed in 1989, there have been several thousand fewer cancer deaths in the region. Results from the first long-term study to examine the impact of the closure of a nuclear reactor on health were published online March 27 in Biomedicine International. The research was conducted by Joseph Mangano, MPH, MBA, an epidemiologist and executive director of the radiation and public health project in New York City, and Janette Sherman, MD, adjunct professor of environmental studies at Western Michigan University in Kalamazoo. "We believe that further research is now warranted to see if there is a cause and effect relation between the elimination of nuclear emissions from power plants and a significant long-term decline of cancers," ...

Sacramento County gets a new sheriff!
Bubble 2.0 ? Despite all the happy-go-lucky Real Estate news of late, I am growing ever concerned about the pace of growth in the region. We have reported 25% year over year gains, other publications have pegged it higher, some over 35%. I certainly don't want to be the guy pouring water on the fire, but let's really take a hard look at the fundamentals. The most significant contributor to the recent surge in value is scarcity of inventory. Sure affordability, low prices & rates, contribute to buyer demand; but it all comes down to good, old-fashioned supply and demand. I can almost here the Brogue of Adam Smith in my head saying, "Look Laddie!" My concern is that there are no other economic fundamentals to support this growth. Granted unemployment is down a couple points, but those numbers are so manipulated that it is hard to know if that statistic is due to people getting jobs, or just giving up. Unemployment in Sacramento County is projected to be under 6% by 2016, but how does that help us toda ...
My families mine ownership Frank Fischer friend of my Grandfather left such in his will to Dallas Wilson and his Grandson Michael Dallas Finch of Fresno California One of the oldest mining men in the vicinity of Sierra City is Arthur R. Pride, who is a native of the Sacramento Valley and is the owner of some valuable gold-mining property in Sierra County. He was born at Courtland, Sacramento County, California, on the 7th of February, 1877, and is a son of Baruch and Maggie (Haddox) Pride. His father was born in what is now West Virginia and came to California in 1856 locating in Sierra City later in the same year. He followed the vocation of mining, working at the Sierra Buttes and Independence mines, and did much prospecting and mining in various localities. At that time Sierra City was in its embryo stage, and there was not a road or hotel there. In Virginia he married Miss Maggie Haddox, who was born in that state and was of Welsh ancestry, while he was of English antecedents. Her father was a g ...
Sacramento County elections officials say they have found 407 uncounted ballots cast in the Nov. 6 election. County Registrar Jill LaVine says her "stomach dropped" after the ballots were found in a sealed bag on a warehouse shelf. She said the ballots were placed in a red bag on Election Day instead of the designated pink ones used to hold ballots because workers at the Natomas Community Center ran out of pink bags. Red bags typically hold supplies such as provisional envelopes, pens and registration cards. LaVine said Thursday that an analysis showed the ballots would not have changed the outcome of any of contest in the 92 affected precincts. The ballots were found Feb. 7 as workers went through red supply bags to prepare for the next election.
Sacramento area residents reported more murders, robberies, rapes and thefts to police last year than during 2011, ending a string of consecutive annual crime declines, according to statistics from nine of the largest law enforcement agencies in the region. Few areas went unscathed. In the city of Sacramento, violent crime rose 5 percent. In the Sacramento County Sheriff's jurisdiction, it rose 12 percent. Folsom, Roseville, Rancho Cordova and West Sacramento each saw violent crime reports increase by 15 percent or more. The jump marks at least a pause in the long-term decline in crime generally seen across the Sacramento region and the nation. The U.S. violent crime rate in 2011 was roughly half the rate from 1991. The FBI is still collecting year-end crime totals for agencies nationwide. But data for the first six months of the year indicated that the nation, too, was seeing a modest crime increase. Criminologists cautioned that one year's worth of data does not establish a trend. The number of crimes r ...
I would like to share with you these pictures from last Friday at the 41st Annual Business Award Gala held by the Sacramento Hispanic Chamber of Commerce. I had the opportunity to talk to Sacramento’s Mayor Kevin Johnson about the King Kennedy Board of Directors, Latino Community Roundtable of Stanislaus County and the B&B Mixers. He was pleased to learn about the collaboration between the African American and Hispanic Communities. He said that it would be a good idea to do the same activities in Sacramento County with their local organizations.

I thought it would be of local interest to repeat my commentary from last year regarding a past SacBee news item. I would like to hear your comments. The 6th Assembly District which is mostly Placer County (Roseville, Lincoln, Rocklin, Granite Bay, Loomis/Penryn), most eastern district of Sacramento County (Fair Oaks, Orangevale, and Folsom), and the area southwest of Placerville in Placer County) voted in 2012 just the opposite of the rest of California and the the nation; against President Obama, for Prop 32 (union-busting bill) and against Prop 30 (Governor's budget) and a landslide for local Republican/Tea Party state legislators at a 2:1 ratio. Is there a connection here? Your comments please. - My amended comments regarding a News item in 9/16/12 Sacbee by Dan Morain. "Placer County has achieved a 78% youth (18 - 25) voter registration due to the outreach program of the Placer County Registrar of Voters, managed by county registrar, Jim McCawley. This is in itself a significant achievement. You kn . ...

is back from a 34F drive to Riverside, and is ready to get something done! But, the garage is still in the 30's!! So, I'm going to share my solution to Obama's National Debt and our future bankruptcy! Obama won't cut spending, so like any responsible American household, we should sell an asset to payoff our debt. We should sell the State of Hawaii to the Chinese for 18 Trillion dollars to pay them back and obtain a little cash. I know, China would prefer the oil rich State of Alaska but we will need the oil after Obama's policies are fully implemented. To avoid the cost of replacing all our flags with 50 stars, we should also split California into two States, i.e., the Liberal West California consisting of coastal counties from LA north including Sacramento County, and the Conservative East California including the other counties! Of course there would be a period of relocation for those wishing to live in Conservative East California or Liberal West California!!

"Sexual Impropriety in the Church" Once again I converted to the Catholic faith due to the on going sexual impropriety found in the protestant churches of Sacramento County. This is not the kind of social behavior I want to see for myself or my children. There has not been one divorce in my Catholic Church. I think I am the only divorced party. The churches were so violent I left. I have never heard of one rape case in the catholic church but there have been three or four girls raped in Sacramento County Churches were criminal convictions were never made. My kids are only allowed to go the Catholic and Muslim churches. Call a priest a "perp" but after convicting them thin air as a music teacher I have yet to meet a priest who possessed the behavioral patterns of a pedophile because they have behavioral patterns. I think when one person screams "perp" all of society screams "perp" and the catholic church sent a check. I am not in agreement with what occurred. There may have been a few issues but not to th ...

Lock Your Doors and Prepare to Defend your Families! Do you think that is an alarmist headline? Well, I am not the one saying this. Law enforcement authorities all over the country are telling citizens that they can no longer deal with all the crime and that people need to lock their doors and prepare to defend their families. Just recently, the city attorney of San Bernardino, California told citizens to "lock their doors and load their guns" because there is not enough money to pay for adequate police protection any longer. The murder rate in San Bernardino is up 50 percent this year, but the city is dealing with bankruptcy and has been forced to lay off 80 police officers. But San Bernardino is not the only city dealing with this kind of a thing. In Oakland, burglaries are up 43 percent so far this year, and to say that there is a "crime wave" going on in Oakland would be a massive understatement. If you can believe it, in Oakland "more than 11,000 homes, cars or businesses have been broken into so far ...

Among my City mail today was an invitation from the "Local Government Commission" out of Sacramento to attend their 22nd Annual Conference for Local Elected Officials at Yosemite National Park, March 15-17. The theme is going to be "Building Livable Communities: New Strategies for a New Age." Sounds lofty! Cost for the 2 1/2 day conference is $275 for LGC members and $320 for non-members. You can choose between staying at the Ahwahnee Hotel for $486 per night, per room or at the Yosemite Lodge at THE FALLS for $217 per night. I wonder how many elected officials in this state take a long weekend trip to Yosemite on the backs of their taxpayers and I wonder whether their constituents have any idea their tax dollars are spent on such boondoggles (aka free vacations).

Is the State of California going broke, or broke already? In Sacramento County, which I think is the same throughout the State, your business (large or small) now is required to Self Inspect "Fire Inspections" at a $90 fee. If you don't, they come out (which they haven't done in how many years?) at a charge of $180 plus whatever they find wrong, thus a fine. But, it doesn't stop there. Try to register your vehicle on line. This is my experience. $157 fee made up of Registration Fee of $69, License Fee of $40, County/District Fee of $10 and Special Plate Fee of $38. Okay, I will pay the fee. Wait. If you pay it on-line, you pay an additional $29 to Cartagz Service Fee (never heard of them) and a $3.93 Convenience Fee. The total is now $189.93. The good news is that you can still mail it in at the original fee of $157, I THINK. I DID. On my other car, I didn't have to get a SMOG test, but I was charged a "SMOG Abatement Fee" of $20, plus all of the other charges listed above, at a higher fee be ...

Hello All, Genealogy wise 2013 is starting out well. What Kindergarten Readiness Means to Kindergarten Teachers Lisa Guernsey - November 2, 2009 - 10:48am Data from a survey of kindergarten teachers in California's Santa Clara County adds to the mounting evidence that kindergarten readiness is not as simple to define as you might think. Contrary to popular conceptions of what it means for a 5-year-old to be ready for kindergarten, most kindergarten teachers are not wishing for rooms full of children who can already identify the letters of the alphabet. What they want instead are children who have learned how to regulate their impulses, follow through on a difficult task and have the self-control to listen to the teacher's directions for a few minutes. This was one of several messages that emerged in Sacramento last Thursday during a presentation of recent data from the Santa Clara County Partnership for School Readiness, a collaborative of public, private and non-profit organizations in Silicon Valley. The presentation was part of the forum at which the New ...

I’m pleased that Congress passed the fiscal cliff compromise last night, protecting middle class families and small business owners from devastating tax hikes in the new year, and that Sacramento County families struggling to find jobs will continue to receive unemployment benefits. Unfortunately this is only a temporary fix and there is still significant work to be done to reduce the deficit and make sure our children aren’t burdened under a mountain of debt. Within the next two months, Congress will have to address the debt limit and the cuts in federal spending that were postponed by last night’s 11th-hour action. I look forward to tackling these important issues with my colleagues from both parties in the 113th Congress.
