WINDIES LOOK TO EVEN SERIES Superb Taylor gives Windies advantage CMC. PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad – West Indies are likely to go with a three-pronged pace attack in the second Test against New Zealand which bowls off here Monday, as they seek to rebound from last week's heavy defeat and level the series. The Caribbean side were hammered by 186 runs inside four days in the first Test at Sabina Park in Kingston last Wednesday, and will hunt a victory over the next few days at Queen's Park Oval in order to stay alive in the three-Test rubber. While they fielded two seamers and two spinners in the opening Test, captain Denesh Ramdin hinted on Sunday that they could play the lone spinner as they looked to boost their fast bowler options. “Looking at the pitch, it looks like a little more grass than Jamaica so we may have to make some changes to our spin department,” Ramdin told reporters. “Come tomorrow, [it] depends on how (Shane) Shillingford feels – he has a little niggle – and how (Sulieman) Benn ...

MEDIA RELEASE VETERAN GUYANESE PLAYERS TO SHOWCASE TALENT AT SABINA PARK Kingston, Jamaica- Veteran Guyanese batsmen Shivnarine Chanderpaul and Ramnaresh Sarwan headline a strong Guyana team that arrived in Jamaica on Tuesday for the first round Regional Four Day clash against host Jamaica at Sabina Park starting on Friday. The duo is joined by West Indies players Narsingh Deonarine ,Assad Fudadin, Cristopher Barnwell, Versammy Permaul, Devendra Bishoo and Sewnarine Chattergoon in what is being described as one of the strongest Guyana sides in many year’s. The rest of the squad reads Anthony Bramble, Amir Khan, Ronsford Beaton, Keon Joseph and Vishal Singh. The team is coached by former player Esuan Crandon and managed by Alvin Johnson. Chanderpaul, who will be leading the team in this year’s Regional Four Day championship, says his team will be looking to get off to a good start against Jamaica. “We know that playing Jamaica at Sabina Park will be a tough assignment, but we have one of the stronges ...
Ireland stun World T20 champions Windies Kingston (Jamaica), Thu, Feb 20 2014 Ireland's Ed Joyce bats during a one-day international (ODI) cricket match between Ireland and England at Malahide Cricket Club in Malahide, Ireland, on September 3, 2013 Ireland added to their list of giant-killing victories with a six-wicket win over World Twenty20 champions West Indies in the first T20 international at Jamaica's Sabina Park on Wednesday. It was at the Kingston venue where Ireland dramatically defeated Pakistan in a St Patrick's Day 50-over World Cup match back in 2007. And seven years on from that success, Ireland -- the leading non-Test cricket nation -- upset one of the sport's 'big boys' once again, with former England batsman Ed Joyce making a decisive 40 not out. After the West Indies won the toss and batted, a good all-round Ireland effort in the field saw the hosts restricted to 116 for eight in their 20 overs. Tim Murtagh, Alex Cusack and Kevin O'Brien took two wickets apiece, with Cusack capturing th ...

Today in Cricket history: 1986 The day Mike Gatting's nose went west. In the first one-day international against West Indies at Sabina Park, Gatting, sporting a helmet with no visor, wore a short one from Malcolm Marshall right on the bridge of the nose. To add insult to injury, the ball trickled onto the stumps and bowled him. Marshall later found a piece of bone embedded in the ball. It led to a famous exchange at Heathrow Airport, where a battered and bruised Gatting was asked by a journalist "where exactly on the nose" the ball had hit him. As for the match, England were never in it once Tim Robinson and David Gower went without scoring, and West Indies eased home by six wickets with 13 balls to spare. 1969 For such a magnificent player, Garry Sobers the captain made some duff decisions. He was the man who declared when England won by seven wickets in Trinidad in 1967-68, and on this day his decision to put Australia in backfired with a thumping 382-run defeat. This after the Aussies smashed 619 in th ...
Unsung hero of 80's... It was not just 1992 World cup win... Under Imran Khan's leadership Pakistan drew THREE test series against the Mighty West Indies of the 80s (all of them drawn 1-1) Cricket - on second thoughts: Imran Khan's Pakistan | Sport | The legendary West Indies side of the 80s never managed to beat them, yet Pakistan's greatest side are nowhere near cricket's pantheon. Rob Smyth wonders why Modern Test cricket can be akin to the school playground: the batting bullies prey upon frail bowlers who are given little or no support by both the authorities and their culture. But at least the damage has a natural limit: sticks and stones may break your bones, but X-rated figures will never hurt you. It was different in the 1980s, when West Indies' army of fast bowlers turned Test cricket into a war zone. They were armed with so much more than sticks and stones - when they brutalised England inside three days in Sabina Park in 1986 Wisden Cricket Monthly described it as "cricket's equ ...
Sachin Tendulkar retires, cricketing world goes numb - Hindustan Times The news of Sachin Tendulkar’s retirement was expected for some time, but when it did come, there was a sense of numbness. And, that is how it would be felt across India and the rest of the cricketing world. Hailed a genius on his international debut, his achievements with the bat and fame have transcended the game. Tendulkar announced on Thursday that he will retire from the Tests following his 200th test match. (PTI Photo) That is because ever since he burst on to the scene as a 16-year-old in 1989, he has entertained cricket fans like few others have. In return, the cricketing world, from Sydney Cricket Ground to Sabina Park, have loved him like one of their own. Across nations, his runs were celebrated and strokes applauded. The rousing reception the announcement of his name elicited was not restricted to hometown Mumbai – they were equally thunderous in England, Australia or South Africa. The crowd reaction settled all debate ...

Will injured MS Dhoni leave tri-series midway? "Dhoni is not feeling good. He is going to be examined. He has a hamstring issue," a source in the BCCI said here. Dhoni handed over the wicket keeping duties to teammate Dinesh Karthik in their opening match last night, which was won by the West Indies by one wicket at Sabina Park, Kingston. India are to take on Sri Lanka tomorrow at the same ground and the source said that the selectors would take a call on the matter once his injury is assessed. Confident Charles - "I did my thing" (By Sports Journalist) JOHNSON Charles made a stroke-filled 97 to lead the West Indies to sensational one-wicket victory over India in Match 2 of the CELKON Mobile Cup tri-nation tournament on Sunday at Sabina Park. The 24-year-old opener Charles hit eight fours and four towering sixes off 100 balls as West Indies recovered from 26-3 to reach their target of 230-9 to win with 14 balls left. When India travel, money follows, For the impoverished WICB, substituting a bilateral with Sri Lanka with a tri-series is a financial coup. However, it isn't doing Test cricket any good in the region. It only needed a quick glance around Sabina Park on Friday to understand why India are here for the ODI triangular with West Indies and Sri Lanka, rather than the two Tests, three ODIs and one T20 against Sri Lanka as stipulated on the ICC's Future Tours Programme (FTP). The switch has little to do with cricket, all to do with the money that follows India wherever they go. The teams are playing for the Celkon Mobile Cup, the name of a large Hyderabad-based manufacturer of mobile phones. It and a host of other Indian products and services, household names in the subcontinent, but unheard of in these parts, fill the ground perimeter advertising boards. They are there because live coverage of the matches is transmitted back to India (as well as several other areas) by Ten Sports, the Dubai-based Indian producti ...

GAYLE'S TON. WESTINDIES WIN. West Indies enjoyed a six-wicket victory over Sri Lanka with the help of the hard-hitting century made by opening batsman Chris Gayle, in the opening one-day cricket international in the tri-nation cup at Sabina Park on Friday. Gayle slammed 109 off 100 balls, with nine fours and seven sixes, in posting his 21st one-day century as the hosts successfully chased down Sri Lanka's modest total of 208 all out off 48.3 overs,

1958 A record-breaking day for 21-year-old Garry Sobers , who turned his maiden Test century into a stunning 365 not out at Sabina Park
Once upon a twinkle-toed debut A little over eight years ago, a young Australian made a dream debut in Bangalore. Now he returns as captain Cricket loves its beginnings: the first Test of a series, the first spell, the first hour. The first over, like the start of a good novel, can grab you by the collar, demanding your attention. Steve Harmison knows that. Virender Sehwag once said he always wants to cart the first ball of every Test for four. He didn't say anything about the second or third (which he would probably cart too) but emphasised the first. The game has a special place for first Tests. Nathan Lyon took a wicket off his first ball on debut and joined a pub trivia frat with 17 others. Bob Massie played only six Tests but nobody will forget his first. A Sabina Park veteran dragged me into the stands to show me where he had sat during Lawrence Rowe's debut 214. Then he cover-drove with his right hand and, as Rowe had done, whistled in the follow-through. Every memorable debut has a tailor-made nar ...
CCC aim to change fortunes against Jamaica Marc Stamp, Gleaner Writer The Combined Campuses and Colleges (CCC) cricket team arrived in the island yesterday in a confident mood ahead of their West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) Super50 tournament match against Jamaica at Sabina Park tomorrow,... ~SportsMan
A Sabina Park farce Sixty-two ball match in Jamaica, and a record no other match can break Jan 29, 1998 One of the shortest Tests in history. The Jamaica match between England and West Indies lasted just 62 bone-crushing deliveries. England were 17 for 3 at the time - Alec Stewart was still there having made an imperious, unbeaten 9 - and their physio Wayne Morton had run out six times in 66 minutes. When Nasser Hussain came to the crease, Stewart apparently greeted him with the words: "It's Saturday, it's eight o'clock, it's the lottery." Thankfully England's number came up when the umpires, Steve Bucknor and Srinivas Venkataraghavan, courageously called off play because of the unsafe pitch.
TODAY IN HISTORY : 1933 Boys' Own stuff in Brisbane when Eddie Paynter left his hospital bed to come to England's aid as they struggled in the fourth Test of the Bodyline series. Laid low by acute tonsillitis, Paynter heard of England's plight on the radio, and with the Ashes in the balance, grabbed a taxi and arrived at the ground in his pyjamas. He stopped the rot, finishing the day on 24 not out, returned to hospital, and then extended his innings to 83 the following morning. 2009 In a situation reminiscent of the Sabina Park farce in 1997-98, the second Test between West Indies and England at the new Sir Vivian Richards Stadium was abandoned after just 10 balls. The outfield was sandy and there was a lack of firmness underfoot while bowling. Jerome Taylor's first delivery landed wide off the stumps. Fidel Edwards was frustrated with the sand being kicked up as he ran in. International cricket was suspended at the stadium for 12 months. 1980 A famous victory for New Zealand, but a cranky match that lef ...
by Clare Forrester Published Wednesday, January 16, 2013  |  The Jamaica Observer   My first column for 2013 is devoted to a conservative review of my friend and colleague sports writer Tony Becca's latest book, Cricket, lovely cricketers: The best of my time. Regrettably, a thorough review would require much more space than what the Observer allows me.   The book chronicles memorable feats of select cricketing immortals between 1953, when Becca saw his first Test match at Sabina Park, and 2011. Strangely, the writer does not make much of his role as a sports writer/editor for first the Daily News and subsequently The Gleaner, during this period, which allowed him to view most of the games and which, to my mind, would have added even more credibility to this very important publication. In fact, the brief back-cover note on the author refers to his role as a life member, trustee and former president of Melbourne Cricket Club with the last line simply stating that: "He currently writes for Jamaica's old ...
Exhibit A: October 2004: Nagpur – India India vs Australia, on a green pitch. Yes, the very same game in which Saurav Ganguly famously sat out. India were 70 odd with 4 down, Rahul Dravid and Mohammed Kaif slugging it out against a marauding Glenn McGrath. During the course of partnership, Dravid, who was struggling for form himself, apparently said to Kaif that he will face McGrath from this end and let Kaif face the relatively easier Warne. Reason – Him being the senior player, he felt he had the experience to handle McGrath, and if they saw through this mini session, they had a chance of building a good partnership. Dravid eventually was caught at first slip of McGrath after 6 consecutive maidens. The scorecard would show an ugly 21 of 140 balls, but there was much more to the innings than just its strike rate. Exhibit B: July 2006 – Sabina Park –Kingston, Jamaica India vs West Indies, on a minefield of a pitch. The pitch was 2 paced, variable bounce and everything else that made a pitch nearly ...

Samuels' special tribute to Jamaica 50 Marlon Samuels put on a batting master class for his countrymen at Sabina Park as he made a superb fourth Test century. The elegant Jamaican played a number of breathtaking shots as he made a commanding 123 off 169 balls to keep the West Indies alive on the second day of the second Digicel Test on Friday. The 31-year-old stroked 15 fours and four sixes - three in one over - including a gem over extra-cover to reach triple figures. It was his highest Test score, surpassing the 117 he made against England at Trent Bridge in May. The century was his first on home soil at Sabina Park and first in the Caribbean. Samuels dedicated his century to the people of Jamaica. The island nation will celebrate its 50th anniversary of Independence on Monday, August 6. "This was for Jamaica. This was for the people of my country as we celebrate Jamaica 50. It is a special time for Jamaica so I came out and put in my piece to celebrate. It was good to be in front of my people doing wel ...
