Spent this morning teaching actors from the Royal Shakespeare Theatre to play Billiards!
Out Tuesday 6th May! Richard is King. A monarch ordained by God to lead his people. But he is also a man of very human weakness. A man whose vanity threatens to divide the great houses of England and drag his people into a dynastic civil war that will last 100 years. RSC Artistic Director Gregory Doran directs David Tennant in the title role of ‘a definitive production of a great play’ (Daily Mail). Richard: David Tennant Duke of York: Oliver Ford Davies John of Gaunt: Michael Pennington Bolingbroke: Nigel Lindsay Duchess of Gloucester: Jane Lapotaire Director: Gregory Doran Recorded live at the Royal Shakespeare Theatre, Stratford-upon-Avon, November 2013. What the press said: ‘‘David Tennant gives a bravado performance of a multi-layered, complex and intelligent medieval king in Shakespeare's masterful history play.’’ The Daily Express ‘‘Gregory Doran's exceptional production is a rousing triumph.’’The Observer ‘‘Michael Pennington is little short of magnificent as John of Gaunt. ...
Greetings fellow Griftarians! I trust all have enjoyed the festivities so far. I know I particularly enjoyed the live table read of Starship Grifters, directed by Kenneth Branagh and starring David Tennant, on the stage of the Royal Shakespeare Theatre. That is to say nothing of the statue of Grifters author, Rob Kroese, unveiled in the courtyard of One Kroese Place, the I.M. Pei-designed headquarters of Kroese International. After such pomp and pomposity, it seems I am here to sweep up the floors, virtually speaking, before the big fireworks finale. On with it, then… The topic of the day is heroism. When I am not writing, which is almost all of the time these days, I am a commercial and documentary film producer, director and editor. In our business, we throw the word “hero” around with reckless abandon. A shot that we feel is the most important of the day is our “hero shot.” A car that should be lit and photographed with far greater attention to detail than others is the “hero car.” We hav ...
This year's birthday festivities launch with a free fireworks display from the top of the Royal Shakespeare Theatre on Wednesday 23 April.
Life Events Part7ff Stratford-upon-Avon There were times when I was living in England when I felt like I was frequenting a dream world of the highest order. Attending performances at the Royal Shakespeare Theatre in Stratford took me to that magical place. The theatre is imposing, but I took greater delight in the statues on the lawn. Of course, there is a statue of Shakespeare. There are four other statues there as well: Hamlet, my favorite character in Shakespeare's plays, Lady Macbeth, Prince Hal, and Falstaff. Bob, Jenora, and I saw more than half of Shakespeare's plays performed by the premiere Shakespearean actors of that era. After we arrived in Statford, we checked in at a bed and breakfast place where the owner, a woman, always made us feel at home. Between checking in and attending a performance of a play, we would explore Stratford. Of course, we went to Shakespeare's birthplace, which was decidedly not humble. We also visited the house where he and his wife Anne Hathaway lived. We went to the ...
Today Simon Annand's exhibition of photographs of actors preparing for the stage opens at the Royal Shakespeare Theatre. The Half is a touring exhibition from the Victoria and Albert Museum, London (V&A) curated with Simon Annand. This special version of the exhibition, created in collaboration with the RSC, includes new photographs on public display for the first time of Jane Lapotaire, Michael Pennington and David Tennant from the RSC's current production of Richard II. The Half is an actor's countdown to walking on stage and facing an audience. Simon Annand's photographs capture this final 35 mins of excitement and intensity before the show begins. Visitors are invited to peep into the secret world of the dressing room to discover actors engaging in personal reflections and private rituals as they make the transition into character. The exhibition also features a video of images by Simon Annand of the RSC's costume team and acting company working together backstage, commissioned by the RSC as part of I ...
David Tennant doesn't disappoint as he returns to the RSC in artistic director Gregory Doran's production, which runs in the Royal Shakespeare Theatre before transferring to the Barbican
A few days before the opening of their latest production, David Tennant and Greg Doran have been interviewed by the Independent about their theatrical collaborations. At the moment they are in the closing stages of rehearsals for the new Royal Shakespeare Company staging of Richard II which will make its debut on Thursday 10th October at the Royal Shakespeare Theatre, Stratford-upon-Avon. Read some highlights from the interview below: On their reasons for wanting to perform Richard II: Greg: "It’s a great lyric tragedy. On one level it’s a play about regime change, where people who think they have a God-given right to power attempt to cling on to that power beyond its sell-by date, so it has a great resonance [with current world events]. It’s all delivered in the most beautiful poetry [ever] written." David: " I saw [it] at drama school [and] was completely transported by it and by Derek Jacobi’s performance. It’s a play I have always loved… Because it’s quite unknowable. There are no heroes ...
