28th July - ON THIS DAY 1954, The first press interview with 19-year-old Elvis Presley was published in the 'Memphis Press- Scimitar'. 1956, Gene Vincent made his first appearance on national TV in the US on The Perry Como Show. Vincent had released ‘Woman Love’ the previous month, but it was the B-side, ‘Be-Bop-A-Lula,’ that eventually made the top 10. The song had been purchased from a fellow hospital patient when Vincent was recovering from leg injuries. A demo of the song made its way to Capitol Records as part of an Elvis sound-alike contest and a re-recorded version gave Vincent a hit. 1960, Cliff Richard and the Shadows were at No.1 on the UK singles chart with 'Please Don't Tease', the singers third UK No.1. The song was chosen for release by a poll of Cliff's fans. 1960, Roy Orbison entered the UK chart with 'Only The Lonely', which went on to give Roy his first of 3 UK chart toppers. As an operatic rock ballad, it was a sound unheard of at the time, and is seen as a seminal event in the ...
Chris Isaak reminds me of Roy Orbison. I guess it's rock-a-billy sound?
Today Is Music History July 25th: On this Day 1960, Roy Orbison reached No.2 on the US singles chart with ‘Only the Lonely,’ his first hit. The song was turned down by The Everly Brothers and Elvis Presley, so Orbison decided to record the song himself. More on Roy Orbison 1962, The Beatles played at the Cavern Club in Liverpool at lunchtime; at night they performed again at the Cavern Club, and then they appeared at the Cabaret Club, Liverpool. The Cabaret Club booking was Brian Epstein's attempt to get The Beatles into the cabaret circuit, but it is a miserable failure with no response from the audience. 1963, Cilla Black made a recording test for EMI Records after George Martin had spotted her while at a Gerry And The Pacemakers gig in Liverpool. 1964, The Beatles third album 'A Hard Day's Night' started a twenty-one week run at the top of the UK charts. This was the first Beatles album to be recorded entirely on four-track tape, allowing for good stereo mixes. 1965, Dressed in Carnaby Street threa ...

George & Joe As KTLN's music director and one who contributed record information to the industry's barometer of hits, Bill Gavin in San Francisco, I began receiving telephone calls from national promotion men, there were few females, urging me to add their latest releases to our stations playlist. Top forty radio offered a great variety of music, everything from Lawrence Welk's "Calcutta" and Bert Kaempfert's "Wonderland by Night" to Ricky Nelson, Roy Orbison, Elvis and Pat Boone sharing the Hit Parade with theTokens and folk singers like the Highwaymen. Many years later programmers found a need to "blend," we instead offered a great variety in the music mix. Early on I would hear our afternoon drive jock, who was also our program director, George Wilson, featuring his own records that were not on the KTLN playlist. Denver, with no urban or black music radio station then, was being given a healthy dose of Chess, Checker and Argo music, a Chicago label known for black releases. In questioning George he re ...

June 9th 1963, The Beatles, on the last night of their tour with Roy Orbison, performed at King George's Hall, Blackburn, Lancashire. It was during this tour that The Beatles' fans started throwing jelly babies at them while they were on stage, after an off-the-cuff remark on television that George Harrison enjoyed eating them. 1964, During an evening session Bob Dylan recorded Mr. Tambourine Man at Columbia Recording Studios in New York City. This was the first session for the Another Side Of Bob Dylan, which saw Dylan recording fourteen original compositions that night. The Byrds later recorded a version of Mr. Tambourine Man that was released as their first single and reached No.1 on both the US & UK Chart. The Byrds' recording of the song was influential in initiating the musical subgenre of folk-rock, leading many contemporary bands to mimic its fusion of jangly guitars and intellectual lyrics in the wake of the single's success. 1967, Pink Floyd played two gigs in one day, the first at the College o ...
Whittle With Shine All Night…Bail Hay Every Day! I was watching an episode of Guitar Center Sessions on television tonight in which Gary Allan was the featured artist. He and the host were discussing the current condition of country music. Allan was more or less defending contemporary country that the host was rightfully “calling out.” Attempting to play both sides, Gary Allan was also trying to establish his credibility as a fan of traditional country music. He said something along the lines, “Yeah, I cut my teeth on the Highwaymen, those guys- Kris Kristofferson, Willie Nelson, Johnny Cash, and Roy Orbison.” As a major country recording artist for some time now, how does Gary Allan confuse Roy Orbison for Waylon Jennings? Even the British host caught the error but never brought it to Allan's attention. Worse yet, how does Allan leave Waylon Jennings out of the Highwaymen, period? C’mon man, this is your supposed to be your passion, your industry, and your livelihood. This blunder is compara ...
THIS DAY IN MUSIC HISTORY: 1956, Elvis Presley appeared on ABC-TV's 'Milton Berle Show'. During the performance, Presley abruptly halted an uptempo rendition of 'Hound Dog' with a wave of his arm and launched into a slow, grinding version accentuated with energetic, exaggerated body movements. Presley's gyrations created a storm of controversy. 1959, Bob Zimmerman graduated from high school in Hibbing, Minnesota. Zimmerman was known as a greaser to classmates in the remote rural community, because of his long sideburns and leather jacket. 1961, Roy Orbison went to No.1 on the US chart with 'Running Scared', it made No.9 in the UK. The B-side 'Love Hurts' also picked up significant airplay, making Orbison's recording the first version to be a hit. 1964, The Rolling Stones played their first-ever live date in the US when they appeared at the Swing Auditorium, San Bernardino, California. The Stones were supporting their first album release The Rolling Stones, in North America. 1968, The Jimi Hendrix Experien ...

Elvis is unharmed 1956: Elvis Presley appears on the last broadcast of Milton Berle's Texaco Star Theater, performing his brand-new song, "Hound Dog," and also "I Want You, I Need You, I Love You." Elvis' hip-swinging dancing to "Hound Dog" shocks the nation, leading the press to describe it as "like the mating dance of an aborigine" and that the singer clearly had "no future in the music business." 1956: Gene Vincent releases "Be-Bop-A-Lula" 1959: A young kid named Robert Zimmerman, a greaser of sorts known for his long hair and black leather jackets, graduates from Hibbing High School in Hibbing, MN. How Recording Studios Work Legendary recording artist Elvis Presley recorded in Memphis' Sun Studios. Phantom City Studio Orlando Florida recording studios. In 1953, a skinny 18-year-old with slicked-back hair walked into Memphis Recording Service. He wanted to make a personal recording and was looking for owner Sam Phillips. Since Phillips wasn't in, the teen talked to secretary Marion Kiesker. When she asked what style of music he played, he responded, "I don't sound like nobody." Although few people ever heard that first $4 recording, Elvis Presley turned his personal style into worldwide fame with the help of Sam Phillips and that recording studio, which became the legendary Sun Studio. The studio was also home to Johnny Cash, Roy Orbison, Jerry Lee Lewis and B.B. King [source: Rockabilly Hall of Fame]. Sun Studio may be what comes to mind when you think of recording studios, or the Beatles' Abbey Road in London -- or maybe even Chess Records in Chicago where artists such as Muddy Waters, Chuck Berry, ...

I was curious to find out whatever happened to Johhny Horton, only to find that he was killed in a car accident at age 35, caused by a drunk driver. I looked up Johhny Burnette not too long ago and he died in a boating accident at age 30. Patsy Cline was also 30.then we have poor Buddy Holly, Richie V and The Big B. Poor Eddie Cochran was only 21.Gene Vincent was only 36. Hank Williams was only 29. Elvis was 42, Roy Orbison was 54.I'm sure I'm just scratching the surface when it comes to early rock and country Legends who have died too young. Makes me wonder how different the music scene could have been :(

Thank you for your edited photo and comments Jerry Lawrence. ~Eileen On April 3, 1988, Bob Dylan invited some friends over. George Harrison, Jeff Lynne and Roy Orbison thought it would be fun to record a song together. George's guitar was at Tom Petty's house and when he left to get it, he brought Petty back with him. Thus began the Traveling Wilburys

Throwback Thursday. 6 years old and heading to my first talent show. I was doing a Jimmy Durante inpersonation complete with prosthetic nose. Still trying to figure out how to get this nose off. For 5 minutes I was the toast of St. Bartholomew's in Scotch Plains, NJ. 55 years later I'm still playing dress up only now it's as Roy Orbison. Some things never change.
this dissertation playlist consists of my father's favorite performer, Roy Orbison. Listening to his last live concert, the Black and White Night with Elvis Costello, Bruce Springsteen, Tom Waits, and others. Great album.

"Thank God For Kids" is one of my favorite songs of all time. I have seen the Oak Ridge Boys sing it. I cried when I saw Marie Osmond and John Schneider sing it at the Children's Miracle Network Hospitals Champions Celebration at Disney World. I have even sung it on stage before. The guy who wrote the song is the great Eddy Raven. Eddy will be my guest on Kevin Phillips' Classic Country this Saturday at 1:05pm on 810-am KBHB and at www.kbhbradio.com. Eddy, and I, talk about him writing Thank God For Kids, writing for Roy Orbison, we talk about his 12 dogs and the time when my fellow young whipper snapper disc jockeys and I were a little naughty at one of his Fargo concerts back in the early 80s. You will hear lots of great Eddy Raven music, including his moving version of Thank God For Kids. Eddy will appear with Bobby Bare, Leroy Van *** and T. Graham Brown April 25th at the Deadwood Mountain Grand.
There was a time when I enjoyed any music on any dial. Now we're left with one sound trying to sound like another, and some disappearing all together. I actually used to like "country music" too! Now the best thing I've accidentally heard is Darius Rucker! Long gone are the days when you could have "generic" music like we had back in the day like Pearl jam, Guns n' Roses, James Taylor, Aerosmith, Tony Bennett(yes he had a comeback) Michael jackson, Madonna, Janet Jackson, Metallica, Nirvana, U2, nine inch nails, lemon heads, Sade, simply red, Elton John, R.E.M., Garth Brooks, Allen Jackson, Dee-Lite, Outkast, Soul Asylum, Tag-team, Coolio, Dr. Dre, Snoop Dog, Randy Travis, George Straight, The Judd's, Aaron Neville, Beastie Boys, Beck, The Flaming Lips, Billy Joel, Tom Petty, Bruce Hornsby, Willie Nelson, George Jones, Roy Orbison, Depeche Mode, INXS, Morphine, Rage Against the Machine, George Michael, Red Hot Chilli Peppers, Prince, Soundgarden,.if you can't tell by now I'm jumping around a good bit fro ...

3/1/2014 What a better way than to start off the month with an awesome Mardis Gras Parade: The Krewe of Endymion is one of the three Super Krewes. Super Krewes are defined by their stunning use of visuals and floats laced with brand new technology and celebrity Grand Marshals. Their parade has become one of the largest of the eighty parades during Mardi Gras. It is so popular that locals and those in the know begin saving their viewing spots in the early morning hours, even though the parade doesn’t happen until the evening. Endymion gets its name from the figure of Greek mythology, the most handsome of men and the god of youth and fertility. First parading in 1967, Endymion quickly emerged as one of Carnival's 'Super-Krewes' in 1974 with the inclusion of more floats and celebrity guests. Past celebrity guests have included • KC and the Sunshine Band • Suzanne Somers • Captain & Tennille • Kool & the Gang • Fats DominoTom JonesDolly Parton • Heather Locklear • Roy Orbison • Smo ...

Singers that no one could ever sound like: John Fogerty, Roy Orbison, and Frankie Valli
I love discovering older music that I've heard but didn't really realize who was in the group or singing (which is rare for me) like The Traveling Wilburys didn't know it was made up of the late George Harrison, the late great Roy Orbison, Tom Petty, Bob Dylan and others.wow...what an all-star group.
I am glad that you met the King of Pop Michael Jackson. Have you met and performed a song with Roy Orbison.
Here's a musical challenge: Pick a lineup for a next generation Traveling Wilburys group. My first pick would be Tom Petty, as he brings continuity to the group, graduating from "kid brother" to "elder statesman". Second would be SPRINGSTEEN, who would fill the folk-singing, "voice of a generation" role Dylan held in the original group. My third member would be JACKSON BROWNE, who provides a smooth-voiced, west coast juxtaposition to Bruce's gravel-throated east coast vibe. Just to make things interesting, I also chose BONO. "The Joshua Tree" was about as Americana as you can get without being an American. And finally, my most controversial choice will probably be Chris Isaak, who has had a respectable, though admittedly, not legendary musical run. He pulls double-duty by being this group's "junior member", while providing a vocal range hauntingly similar to Roy Orbison's. Honorable Mentions: John Mellencamp, Billy Joel, Bryan Adams & Elvis Costello

The songs I had in my head today (in no particular order): "Gary Indiana" (from "The Music Man") "Love Affair" by k.d. Lang "It's Beginning to Look a Lot Like Christmas" "Bawitdaba" by Kid Rock "Feel This Moment" by Pit Bull ft Christina Aguilera "Nothing But" by Skin "Crying" by Roy Orbison "That's Life" by Frank Sinatra ...actually, I think this is just what was in my head during the first 4 hours at work!
Today's Rant: The Beatles, The question that no panel of talking heads are asking is why? Up to that point in pop music history English acts had very little, if any success, in America. At the same time, American acts such as R&B legends as Robert Johnson, Howlin Wolf, and Muddy Waters were being worshipped by the likes of Lennon, McCartney, Jagger and Clapton. So why would these lads from Liverpool take the world by storm and particularly American teenagers like me? The short answer is "Rockabilly" music. Almost all early rockers were from the Southern United States, Buddy Holly and Roy Orbison were from Texas, so other than the acts out of Philly and the East Coast, the founders of early Rock n roll such as Elvis, Little Richard, Chuck Berry and Jerry Lee Lewis were very much from the south, and most from the deep south. You can add Carl Perkins and Johnny Cash to that list. The "hillbilly" influence in early rock was very hard to listen to, if you were from Chicago or Detroit, it just sounded stupid an ...
Roy Orbison, Gene Pitney , The Platters not really bands per say but that's what I listened to back in the late 50s and 60s
I was just flipping through TV channels and saw this band My Morning Jacket in concert. I've never even heard of this band but the singer was talking about his singing inspirations and he said he was trying to channel "Shannon Hoon, Roy Orbison or Marvin Gaye" in hopes that he could "get on the same rocket ship that they did to hit hose notes". Pretty cool for a Melonhead to hear!! If you ask me NO ONE could duplicate Shannon's vocals.
Beck Hansen (born 8 July 1970) & Paul Henson (myself; born 7 September 1979) have nearly the exact same natal combination of signs in the known planets, but in almost completely different order & numbers: Beck has the Sun, Mercury & Mars in Cancer; the Moon & PLuto in Virgo; Venus in Leo; Jupiter & Uranus in Libra; Saturn in Taurus; Chiron in Aries; Neptune in Scorpio; then I myself have the Sun, Mercury, Venus & Saturn in Virgo; Moon in Aries; Mars in Cancer; Jupiter in Leo; Uranus in Scorpio; Chron in Taurus; & Pluto in Libra; plus, add Neptune in Sagittarius: so I’ve got 1 more sign than Beck has, in the known planets anyway. is that Roy, or a bison? Roy Orbison: Taurus doppelgangers Ford Madox Brown & Claire Danes: both Aries sun/Libra moon. Today, in the history of Rock and Roll, February 6th: 1939: Elvis Presley's father Vernon is released from Parchment Penitentiary in McComb MS, after serving eight months of a 14-month sentence for check forgery. 1962: Decca Records rejects the Beatles. 1964: Tickets for the first Beatles appearance on CBS' Ed Sullivan Show sell out. 1967: The Byrds issue their fourth studio album, “Younger Than Yesterday.” The set contains a cover of Bob Dylan’s “My Back Pages.” 1970: John Lennon releases “Instant Karma (We All Shine On),” his best Rock song. 1981: Paul McCartney records vocal harmonies for George Harrison's "All Those Years Ago," an oddly upbeat tribute to the recently-murdered John Lennon (the song actually started life as something else entirely). Although they were never all in the studio at the same time, the three remaining Beatles do appear on the song. 1982: Van Halen’s remake of Roy Orbison`s “Oh, Pretty Woman” peaks at becoming the group’s biggest hit to date. Review by Stephen Thomas Erlewine [-] There never was a supergroup more super than the Traveling Wilburys. They had Jeff Lynne, the leader of ELO; they had Roy Orbison, the best pop singer of the '60s; they had Tom Petty, the best roots rocker this side of Bruce Springsteen; they had a Beatle and Bob Dylan, for crying out loud! It's impossible to picture a supergroup with a stronger pedigree than that (all that's missing is a Rolling Stone), but in another sense it's hard to call the Wilburys a true supergroup, since they arrived nearly two decades after the all-star craze of the '70s peaked, and they never had the self-important air of nearly all the other supergroups. That, of course, was the key to their charm: they were a group of friends that fell together easily, almost effortlessly, to record a B-side for a single for George Harrison, then had such a good time they stuck around to record a full album, which became a hit upon its 1988 release. Looking back, the group's success seems all the more re ...
Artist Biography by Richie Unterberger Although he shared the same rockabilly roots as Carl Perkins, Johnny Cash, and Elvis Presley, Roy Orbison went on to pioneer an entirely different brand of country/pop-based rock & roll in the early '60s. What he lacked in charisma and photogenic looks, Orbison made up for in spades with his quavering operatic voice and melodramatic narratives of unrequited love and yearning. In the process, he established rock & roll archetypes of the underdog and the hopelessly romantic loser. These were not only amplified by peers such as Del Shannon and Gene Pitney, but also influenced future generations of roots rockers such as Bruce Springsteen and Chris Isaak, as well as modern country stars the Mavericks. Orbison made his first widely distributed recordings for Sun Records in 1956. Roy was a capable rockabilly singer, and had a small national hit with his first Sun single, "Ooby Dooby." But even then, he was far more comfortable as a ballad singer than as a hepped-up rockabil ...

I'll follow up Jeff Thoele's question with a related one: what is the *best* concert you ever attended and what made it so special? I've seen some great ones (Roy Orbison, Doc Watson, Odetta, Aretha Franklin, Mavis Stapes, Pete Seeger & Arlo Guthrie, Al Green, Booker T, but my Top 5 are: 5. The Who 1980-brilliant show brimming with hits; 4. Bob Dylan 1978-first time I saw His Bobness and it was worth it just for the solo acoustic version of "It Ain't Me, Babe" but the rest of the show was awesome; 3. Paul McCartney 2012; 2. Paul Simon solo acoustic 1984 Poplar Creek in Chicago - just Paul Simon, his guitars and songs. He didn't need anything else; 1. Simon & Garfunkel, Paramount Theater, New York 1993. S&G did all the hits as well as 50's covers like Be-Bop-A-Lula, Black Slacks, and You're Mine (And We Belong Together).

And although I have to admit that was pretty funny, I remember seeing the guy when I was about ten years old on the Jimmy Dean Show. Errol Flynn mustache. Black and white motif on his guitars and suits. Now you have to understand that I was grooving to the Beatles and Dave Clark Five and this new sound from across the Atlantic so old Slim came across as quite a clown to me then. But fifty years later, I realize that the man possessed a tone and incredible vocal command that few present day performers could even dream of. What a voice! Amazing perfection in multiple octaves. Roy Orbison approached it. Others attempted. Very pure musical talent. Must be getting old and soft in my appreciation of things I used to ridicule. Maybe that's how this life makes its circles.

...Been pretending to be June Cleaver today. And I've got my Frank Sinatra station playing on Pandora. Pretty sure sweet Mrs. Cleaver didn't exactly jive to the Contours and Roy Orbison in her kitchen, though. This is what I call a good day.
Somethings cannot wait. Today is the day Sam Phillips was born. Sam owned Sun Studios in Memphis, Tennessee. In the 1950's Sam discovered and recorded Elvis,Jerry Lee Lewis, Roy Orbison, Carl Perkins,Johnny Cash,B.B. King, Bobby "Blue" Bland,Ike Turner,Junior Parker,James Cotton, Rufus Thomas,Little Milton and the guy Sam said was his greatest discovery...Howlin' Wolf! I know I left out many artists that recorded for Sam on the Sun Label. When I visited the Sun Studios, it is the only time I really wanted to kiss the floor!! If I had a couple of more adult beverages.

"YOU'RE MY BABY!" by Roy Orbison At Sun Studio, Roy Orbison and Johnny Cash made a deal where they each had to do the other guy's worst song. Orbison's song "You Tell Me" was done by Cash. Johnny's song was a kind of comedy poem called "Little Wooly Booger." Roy sped it up, helped Johnny with the lyrics and it because "YOU'RE MY BABY"! A Rockabilly classic, today it's most famous from the Johnny Cash movie "Walk The Line" where the Roy Orbison character does the song.
