MUSIC HISTORY 101 JANUARY 5, 1923 - Born on this day as Samuel Cornelius Phillips in Florence, Alabama: Sun Studios owner/producer Sam Phillips (d. July 30, 2003) Although he first made his mark with electric blues by black artists, he will be most remembered for his "discovery" of Elvis Presley and other rockabilly stars. Phillip's Memphis, Tennessee based Sun records was first label of Presley, but Sun also launched many other careers including Howlin' Wolf, Carl Perkins, Ike Turner, Rufus Thomas, B.B. King, Jerry Lee Lewis, Roy Orbison, and Johnny Cash. Phillips and Elvis Presley opened a new form of music. He said of Presley: "Elvis cut a ballad, which was just excellent. I could tell you, both Elvis and Roy Orbison could tear a ballad to pieces. But I said to myself, 'You can't do that, Sam.' If I had released a ballad I don't think you would have heard of Elvis Presley." Although much has been written about Phillips' goals, he can be seen stating the following: "Everyone knew that I was just a strug ...

Deduct the Alamo! In 1836, Mexican General Santa Anna and 1,500 troops laid seige against 182 Texans garrisoned at the Alamo, a Spanish mission designed to resist attack from native tribes. Thirteen days later, the Mexicans stormed the walls and killed every last man inside, including Commander William Travis and frontiersmen Davey Crockett and Jim Bowie. Santa Anna's cruelty inspired Texans to join their army to seek revenge, crying "Remember the Alamo!" on their way to crushing the Mexicans at the Battle of San Jacinto. Remembering the Alamo has become a central part of Texas history. So, which Texas musician just offered a tax-planning lesson by donating his collection of Alamo artifacts to the Texas Land Office? Was it rock 'n' roll pioneer Roy Orbison, hailing from lonely Vernon near the Oklahoma border? Perhaps it was country legend Willie Nelson, born an hour south of Fort Worth? Wait, wait . . . was it Tejano accordionist Leonardo "Flaco" Jiménez from San Antonio? No, no, and no. The answer, of c ...

Each Monday for the next couple weeks, I'm going to list albums that were hugely influential for me growing up, both musically and artistically, but also in my life in general. I'll start with the ones that influenced me when I was youngest, and work upwards from there. So here are some from when I was between 0 and 7 years old: Raffi - Baby Beluga Sesame Street - "The Best of Sesame Street" Nirvana - "Nevermind" Roy Orbison - "Mystery Girl" Les Miserables - "The London Recordings" Jimi Hendrix - "Band of Gypsys" Johnny Cash - "At Folsom Prison" Dinah Washington - "Unforgettable" Sade - "Love Deluxe" Whitney Houston - "Whitney Houston" Anyone heard any of these? What influenced you as a toddler?

George : "I just loved playing with the Traveling Wilburys. It was such fun doing that. Oddly enough, with a band that included, besides myself, Bob Dylan, Jeff Lynne, Roy Orbison, Tom Petty and jim Keltner on drums, I felt less pressure than I had on many smaller projects, because none of us had to worry about the solo performance thing 50 much. There was 50 much input from everybody, and we were all relieved to be in a band of equals where no one had to worry about doing all the lead vocals or all the writing. I think a lot of people who liked the first album didn't get the second one, Traveling Wilburys Vol. 3. Unfortunately, it came out just when the gulfwar was starting and the economy was going down. I remember we were going down to choose outfits for our first video and we heard that they'd just bombed Baghdad. But a song like 'New Blue Moon' [from Vol. 3] has that slap-back echo and the feel of all those great Fifties records I loved. It stands up to modem technology, yet has the brightness and fe ...
This Day In Music: October 8th 1964, Roy Orbison was at No.1 on the UK singles chart with 'Oh Pretty Woman', his third UK No.1. Last night was an embarrassment of musical riches on TV. Stumbled on to one of those PBS shows, but very different from any of the others. This one had no live performances, just clips from long ago. Things I had never seen. Where did they get them?? Gene Vincent, Buddy Holly, Bo Diddley. Two songs from the Platters. How wonderful that was, to see all the real Platters. The memories of the Platters and others of their ilk have been so diminished by all the phony groups pretending to be them - to see the REAL Platters performing so elegantly, with Tony Williams' voice soaring over everything - yes, now I remember why they were great. That is needed once in awhile. Lloyd Price doing Personality. Don't know where it was from - was lip synced for sure, but there was a band and all the feel of a live performance. Lloyd Price, YUM! Also a clip of Roy Orbison I'd never seen before - Pretty Woman with a bunch of ladies, and then he did Crying. Still amazes me he could sing like that and not open his ...

SOUTHTOWN 101: Mitch Webb and Claude Black Morgan playing a nice abbreviated, acoustic set this early evening to an appreciative audience. Mitch Webb, did a great job and, played an awesome cover of Elvis Costello's 'What's So Funny about Peace, Love and Understanding'. Mr. Claude, veteran of the local and regional music scene, played some great lead and slide guitar. Claude like wise sang a great rendition of Roy Orbison's "Crying [over you]".

Roy Orbison - Only the Lonely in the Cape Verdean iTunes top 100 chart
George & Joe As KTLN's music director and one who contributed record information to the industry's barometer of hits, Bill Gavin in San Francisco, I began receiving telephone calls from national promotion men, there were few females, urging me to add their latest releases to our stations playlist. Top forty radio offered a great variety of music, everything from Lawrence Welk's "Calcutta" and Bert Kaempfert's "Wonderland by Night" to Ricky Nelson, Roy Orbison, Elvis and Pat Boone sharing the Hit Parade with theTokens and folk singers like the Highwaymen. Many years later programmers found a need to "blend," we instead offered a great variety in the music mix. Early on I would hear our afternoon drive jock, who was also our program director, George Wilson, featuring his own records that were not on the KTLN playlist. Denver, with no urban or black music radio station then, was being given a healthy dose of Chess, Checker and Argo music, a Chicago label known for black releases. In questioning George he re ...

June 9th 1963, The Beatles, on the last night of their tour with Roy Orbison, performed at King George's Hall, Blackburn, Lancashire. It was during this tour that The Beatles' fans started throwing jelly babies at them while they were on stage, after an off-the-cuff remark on television that George Harrison enjoyed eating them. 1964, During an evening session Bob Dylan recorded Mr. Tambourine Man at Columbia Recording Studios in New York City. This was the first session for the Another Side Of Bob Dylan, which saw Dylan recording fourteen original compositions that night. The Byrds later recorded a version of Mr. Tambourine Man that was released as their first single and reached No.1 on both the US & UK Chart. The Byrds' recording of the song was influential in initiating the musical subgenre of folk-rock, leading many contemporary bands to mimic its fusion of jangly guitars and intellectual lyrics in the wake of the single's success. 1967, Pink Floyd played two gigs in one day, the first at the College o ...
Whittle With Shine All Night…Bail Hay Every Day! I was watching an episode of Guitar Center Sessions on television tonight in which Gary Allan was the featured artist. He and the host were discussing the current condition of country music. Allan was more or less defending contemporary country that the host was rightfully “calling out.” Attempting to play both sides, Gary Allan was also trying to establish his credibility as a fan of traditional country music. He said something along the lines, “Yeah, I cut my teeth on the Highwaymen, those guys- Kris Kristofferson, Willie Nelson, Johnny Cash, and Roy Orbison.” As a major country recording artist for some time now, how does Gary Allan confuse Roy Orbison for Waylon Jennings? Even the British host caught the error but never brought it to Allan's attention. Worse yet, how does Allan leave Waylon Jennings out of the Highwaymen, period? C’mon man, this is your supposed to be your passion, your industry, and your livelihood. This blunder is compara ...
THIS DAY IN MUSIC HISTORY: 1956, Elvis Presley appeared on ABC-TV's 'Milton Berle Show'. During the performance, Presley abruptly halted an uptempo rendition of 'Hound Dog' with a wave of his arm and launched into a slow, grinding version accentuated with energetic, exaggerated body movements. Presley's gyrations created a storm of controversy. 1959, Bob Zimmerman graduated from high school in Hibbing, Minnesota. Zimmerman was known as a greaser to classmates in the remote rural community, because of his long sideburns and leather jacket. 1961, Roy Orbison went to No.1 on the US chart with 'Running Scared', it made No.9 in the UK. The B-side 'Love Hurts' also picked up significant airplay, making Orbison's recording the first version to be a hit. 1964, The Rolling Stones played their first-ever live date in the US when they appeared at the Swing Auditorium, San Bernardino, California. The Stones were supporting their first album release The Rolling Stones, in North America. 1968, The Jimi Hendrix Experien ...

Elvis is unharmed 1956: Elvis Presley appears on the last broadcast of Milton Berle's Texaco Star Theater, performing his brand-new song, "Hound Dog," and also "I Want You, I Need You, I Love You." Elvis' hip-swinging dancing to "Hound Dog" shocks the nation, leading the press to describe it as "like the mating dance of an aborigine" and that the singer clearly had "no future in the music business." 1956: Gene Vincent releases "Be-Bop-A-Lula" 1959: A young kid named Robert Zimmerman, a greaser of sorts known for his long hair and black leather jackets, graduates from Hibbing High School in Hibbing, MN. How Recording Studios Work Legendary recording artist Elvis Presley recorded in Memphis' Sun Studios. Phantom City Studio Orlando Florida recording studios. In 1953, a skinny 18-year-old with slicked-back hair walked into Memphis Recording Service. He wanted to make a personal recording and was looking for owner Sam Phillips. Since Phillips wasn't in, the teen talked to secretary Marion Kiesker. When she asked what style of music he played, he responded, "I don't sound like nobody." Although few people ever heard that first $4 recording, Elvis Presley turned his personal style into worldwide fame with the help of Sam Phillips and that recording studio, which became the legendary Sun Studio. The studio was also home to Johnny Cash, Roy Orbison, Jerry Lee Lewis and B.B. King [source: Rockabilly Hall of Fame]. Sun Studio may be what comes to mind when you think of recording studios, or the Beatles' Abbey Road in London -- or maybe even Chess Records in Chicago where artists such as Muddy Waters, Chuck Berry, ...
I guess I am older than I thought, but I mentioned to someone the band The Traveling Wilburys. They had never heard of them. It hurt, a LOT. Please allow me to educate anyone not familiar with this band. The following video was done in tribute to one of their number who had recently died, that was Roy Orbison. How many do you recognize?
On this day 51 years ago, for the first time, female Beatles fans attempted to sneak into the group's dressing room while they were on the same bill with Roy Orbison at a gig in Hanley, England. I was curious to find out whatever happened to Johhny Horton, only to find that he was killed in a car accident at age 35, caused by a drunk driver. I looked up Johhny Burnette not too long ago and he died in a boating accident at age 30. Patsy Cline was also 30.then we have poor Buddy Holly, Richie V and The Big B. Poor Eddie Cochran was only 21.Gene Vincent was only 36. Hank Williams was only 29. Elvis was 42, Roy Orbison was 54.I'm sure I'm just scratching the surface when it comes to early rock and country Legends who have died too young. Makes me wonder how different the music scene could have been :(

"Thank God For Kids" is one of my favorite songs of all time. I have seen the Oak Ridge Boys sing it. I cried when I saw Marie Osmond and John Schneider sing it at the Children's Miracle Network Hospitals Champions Celebration at Disney World. I have even sung it on stage before. The guy who wrote the song is the great Eddy Raven. Eddy will be my guest on Kevin Phillips' Classic Country this Saturday at 1:05pm on 810-am KBHB and at Eddy, and I, talk about him writing Thank God For Kids, writing for Roy Orbison, we talk about his 12 dogs and the time when my fellow young whipper snapper disc jockeys and I were a little naughty at one of his Fargo concerts back in the early 80s. You will hear lots of great Eddy Raven music, including his moving version of Thank God For Kids. Eddy will appear with Bobby Bare, Leroy Van *** and T. Graham Brown April 25th at the Deadwood Mountain Grand.
There was a time when I enjoyed any music on any dial. Now we're left with one sound trying to sound like another, and some disappearing all together. I actually used to like "country music" too!
