Movie News MGM & Warner Bros. launching new Stargate trilogy with Roland Emmerich
Movie Music UK Review of Alexandre Desplat's GODZILLA Original Review by Jonathan Broxton American film makers have been trying to do justice to Godzilla ever since he first appeared in director Ishiro Honda’s classic Japanese monster movie in 1954; although Godzilla is considered to be a significant icon of Japanese culture, Honda was himself inspired to create the King of the Monsters by watching Schoedsack and Cooper’s King Kong, and as such he has his roots in classic Hollywood. There have been 28 official Godzilla films released in Japan, the most recent coming in 2004, but only two American movies (three, if you count Cloverfield): the ill-fated Roland Emmerich directed disaster epic from 1998, which was scored by David Arnold, and this one, which is significantly superior to its predecessor, but still fails to capture the character’s essence according to the purists. Aaron Taylor-Johnson stars as Ford Brody, a naval bomb disposal technician who grew up in Japan, where his father Joe (Bryan Cr ...
Liz and Ryan and I went to see "Godzilla" last night. I was surprised at the depth of thought and feeling the film evoked from all three of us. I shall endeavor to avoid major spoilers in these remarks. I've recently read a couple of pieces on Roland Emmerich's 1998 " 'Godzilla' " (double quotes intentional) inspired by this new reboot, the best of which was a nostalgic ode in Vanity Fair by John DeVore. John's very astute point is that, if you love the '90s, you kind of have to love Emmerich's take on the monster. It's everything about Summer '90s movies all in one: A-list actors and weird B-listers, comedy absolutely everywhere (especially in the most dangerous moments), awkward love stories shoehorned in, wanton destruction of beloved landmarks, and body counts to shame the "Man of Steel" climax, but with even fewer emotional consequences. Emmerich, like Michael Bay, was simply an artist at this genre, a savant who made you cheer for the flash and the trash in equal doses. If 1998's " 'Godzilla' " fai ...
"Godzilla (2014)" surprised me with how little Godzilla there actually was. Like "Jaws" and its lack of full-bodied sharks, "Godzilla" keeps the money-shots close to its chest. I remember Roland Emmerich's widely-panned "Godzilla (1998)" -- where the title character is an antagonist and a source of terror . . . not unlike Jason Voorhees or Freddie Kruger. Here we get a softer, more lovable Godzilla. The creature is our oversized superhero. This "Godzilla" is truer to earlier entries in the franchise where he rescued humankind from Megalon and a cast of other discontents. We continue to see old franchises like "Star Trek" and "Superman" reborn with 4K digital projection and mature computer-graphics (CGI). "Godzilla" makes filmmakers of the 1990s seem like toddlers who carelessly inserted CGI-shots into storyboards. Now we insert drama and storyboards into CGI worlds. In the 1990s, audiences were wowed by impressive CGI assets married to live footage. Now, almost every set has green-screen elements. Almost ...
I really enjoyed Godzilla, all the components worked and I liked the approach to the story, very much in the style of the older Kaiju giant monster films, miles better and more interesting than the Roland Emmerich version. It also honoured the whole point of Godzilla really well, being that Godzilla was the embodiment of the fear of nuclear weaponry and radiation after the second world war, managing to incorporate some of the potentially more unbelievable elements of the original mythology but pulling them off very well. I would say the first half was much better as it lost it's way a bit in terms of the characters during the second half, but I loved the set-up.
GODZILLA THE ORIGINAL “Godzilla” movie made by the Japanese Toho Company in 1954 is an allegory to the atomic bomb that destroyed Hiroshima 8 years ago. It was such a hit that it had 27 sequels. There was even a Pinoy version made by Premiere Productions starring the late Tessie Quintana, “Tokyo 1960”. The monster later became more friendly to humans as he fought with other monstrous opponents. Hollywood first came up with its own version in 1998, directed by Roland Emmerich who had a hit in “Independence Day” the year before. Sadly, his “Godzilla” wasn’t as successful. The latest reboot, on its 60th year, is from British director Gareth Edwards, whose debut in “Monsters” (2010), was well received. He and his writers re-establish Godzilla as the result of the nuclear age. It opens in our own country, The Philippines, in 1999 when a Japanese scientist (Ken Watanabe) and his assistant (Sally Hawkins) discover the huge skeleton of a monster in a mining pit. Whatever is inside the cavern ...
Godzilla (2014): First and foremost, I am proud to say that this is the first US Godzilla film that does not suck (thank you Scott)! After being exposed to Roland Emmerich's 90s epic fail of Godzilla film, didn't think it was possible for Hollywood to try again. This time, they trusted Gareth Edwards after his brilliant film Monsters and gave him the helm. Overall, the film is not perfect, but it is a ride worth remembering. I can say that for the treatment of Godzilla (and I mean the creature itself) is absolutely brilliant. This leads to the biggest complaint a lot of people are giving it that I personally did not have a problem with: the limited amount of screen time Godzilla has during the two hour and eleven minutes duration. Let me put it this way, there are films out there where the title character has limited screen time but each second this character is on screen, they capture the audience's attention and never let go. This is the case in Jaws, Silence of the Lambs and Wizard of Oz when the shark ...
Godzilla review: The 2014 Godzilla is a huge tease. A massively enjoyable, beautifully cinematic tease with some great sound design and of course probably the best looking Godzilla to ever grace the screen but a big tease none the less... yet it still wins my heart. There is a lot of foreplay (small glimpses and images that stick in the head due to the filmmakers beautiful shot composition and just little tidbits of action that make us lust for more) before finally we see the big guy battle, but when he does while it is awesome (and they kept in a piece of lore that previous filmmakers, cough Roland Emmerich cough thought was silly, it literally made me squeal with delight when i knew what was coming). But that's also sort of the problem for all the teasing the payoff, while epic, was kinda too built up and too short. Still It always felt as if the monster was the main even though he wasnt seen at all times. The human lead, unlike in the 1998 American remake, while at the forefront always felt kinda inter ...
In shorter review, Roland Emmerich should take notes on how to make a good Godzilla monster vs monster mash movie.
Godzilla 2014, he is not the Godzilla we need right now, but the Godzilla we deserve. Here's what we know: Apparently he hates Italian food, considering the new Fiat commercial. Rodan confirmed ;) The firefighters are the new version of the Mothra twins. This takes place in New York. The person who did the motion capture movements for Godzilla was Wesley Snipes. (Gonna be badass) There will be only three Asian people in this movie, three more than Roland Emmerich's on-screen abortion from 1998. This is a remake of the Roland Emmerich on-screen abortion from 1998.
Also sidenote I didn't know Bryan Singer or Roland Emmerich were *** Next thing you'll be telling me Ian McKellen is ***
Okay, so here's the thing. The Missus and I just watched "Independence Day" (me for the 7th or 8th time, she for the first time). She wants to know: If the alien saucers are powered from the mothership, how come Jeff Goldblum and Will Smith can escape in their saucer after having planted the virus and destroyed the mothership? Any offers? Roland Emmerich are you reading this?
