UN Ruling Gives Rohingya Hope That Change is Coming in Burma and Thailand PHUKET: The UN General Assembly's approval of a resolution urging Burma (Myanmar) to provide ''full citizenship'' to its Rohingya Muslim minority is a year-ending breakthrough for commonsense and human rights. All Burma needs to do now is to say the word for a genuine transformation to begin. And the word Burma needs to say is, of course, ''Rohingya.'' President Obama urged Burma to show tolerance towards the stateless Rohingya on his 2014 visit. Now the UN is going one step further. Whether the repressive government of Burma changes course or presses on with its abhorrent program of ethnic cleansing will prove to be one of the epic themes of the Southeast Asian region for 2015. For years now, the emerging democracy has been pushing Rohingya Muslims into the sea to remove the despised group that a Burmese envoy once called ''ogres,'' an underclass who undermined the notion of Burmese being a monoculturally light-skinned, good-lookin ...
United Nations (AP) — The U.N. General Assembly approved a resolution Monday urging Myanmar to provide “full citizenship” to its Rohingya Muslim minority and to allow them to move freely throughout the country. The 1.3 million Rohingyas are denied citizenship under national law and are effectively stateless and have almost no rights. Myanmar authorities want to officially categorize them as “Bengalis,” implying they are illegal migrants from neighboring Bangladesh. After Myanmar started a transition from dictatorship to democracy in 2011, newfound freedom of expression fanned the flames of hatred against the Rohingyas by the Buddhist majority. Violence by Buddhist mobs left up to 280 people dead — most of them members of the religious minority — and chased another 140,000 from their homes. The Rohingyas now live under apartheid-like conditions in camps or in restricted villages in Rakhine State. The resolution, adopted by consensus, stressed the assembly’s “serious concern” about the g ...

Burma: New Violence in Arakan State Satellite Imagery Shows Widespread Destruction of Rohingya Homes, Property (New York) – The government of Burma should take immediate steps to stop sectarian violence against the Rohingya Muslim population in Arakan State, in western Burma, and ensure protection and aid to both Rohingyas and Arakanese in the state, Human Rights Watch said today. New satellite imagery obtained by Human Rights Watch shows extensive destruction of homes and other property in a predominantly Rohingya Muslim area of the coastal town of Kyauk Pyu – one of several areas of new violence and displacement. Human Rights Watch identified 811 destroyed structures on the eastern coastal edge of Kyauk Pyu following arson attacks reportedly conducted on October 24, 2012, less than 24 hours before the satellite images were captured. The area of destruction measures 35 acres and includes 633 buildings and 178 houseboats and floating barges adjacent on the water, all of which were razed. There are no ...

Myanmar - Buddhist - Muslim tensions also influence Aid delivery... Arakanese Groups to ‘Monitor’ Aid Operations for Rohingya By LAWI WENG May 26, 2014 | RANGOON — Twenty Arakanese Buddhist civil society groups from 17 townships in Arakan State announced on Sunday that they have set up a “UN, INGO Watch Team” that will monitor international aid operations for the Rohingya Muslim minority in the state. The move is a further sign that Arakanese nationalist groups are trying to exert a degree of control over operations by the United Nations and international aid groups, which have resumed in Arakan State in the past month. “Our team will investigate what those INGOs are doing. We will approach them if we found that our local people did not like what they are doing, and we will inform [the aid groups] about it,” said Nyo Aye, an Arakanese women’s rights activist. “There was a bad understanding between our local people and aid NGOs in the past. ♥ EU launches dialogue with Myanmar Monday, May 12, 2014 08:20 PM BRUSSELS - European Union foreign ministers agreed Monday to hold regular discussions on human rights issues with Myanmar and help bring the former pariah state into line with international standards. The bloc has gradually expanded its contacts with Myanmar since the military-backed government began introducing reforms and released opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi after 15 years of house arrest. But Myanmar's human rights record remains a cause for concern, notably over a recent hike in anti-Muslim violence, for the most part directed against the Rohingya Muslim minority group in the Rakhine State. The human rights dialogue with Myanmar will include annual meetings between top diplomats from both sides to discuss "issues of mutual interest related to human rights, democratic principles and the rule of law," the EU wrote in a statement. The agreement also lists 21 benchmarks for Myanmar to meet. These include the adoption of internation ...

U.S. officials warn Burma that attacks on Rohingya Muslims, aid groups are hurting ties. A Rohingya Muslim family look out from their tents at Da Paing camp for Muslim refugees in north of Sittwe, Rakhine State. (Khin Maung Win/AP) By Joseph J. Schatz, Published: APRIL 17, 11:54 AM ET E-mail the writer Aa RANGOON, Burma — American officials are warning that attacks on minority Muslims and foreign aid groups in Burma are threatening the nascent thaw in relations between Washington and this former pariah state. The Obama administration counts Burma’s transition from military rule as a major foreign policy success for the president and his former secretary of state, Hillary Rodham Clinton. For Burmese leaders, normalizing relations with the U.S. government was key to ending their dependence on China. But allegations, disputed by the Burmese government, that dozens of Rohingya Muslims were massacred by mobs of Buddhists in western Rakhine State in January have outraged human rights groups and members of . ...
Suspension of NGO operations after attacks on their offices leaves aid-dependent minority group even more vulnerable. Weeks after the suspension of foreign aid operations, the humanitarian situation for Myanmar's most vulnerable people, including the ethnic Rohingya people, is worsening. International aid groups stopped operations after their premises were attacked last month. The decision affected Rohingya Muslims in particular because so many of them live in refugee camps. The minority group faces government restrictions and is heavily reliant on non-governmental organisations (NGOs). Al Jazeera's Florence Looi reports from Sittwe, Myanmar.

Rohingya News Agency –(News Service): Archbishop Charles Bo of Yangon said proposed laws on "the protection of race and religion" are unnecessary, and warned against the state interfering in an individual's right to choose their religion. Archbishop Bo told the Asian church news portal ucanews.com that such laws risked dialing back religious freedom in Myanmar at a time when citizens are gaining freedoms in most other areas. A nationalist movement led by Buddhist monks last year had lawyers draft a package of legislation to regulate interfaith marriage, religious conversion and population growth, backed by a petition with more than 1.3 million signatures. The government of the country's reformist president, Thein Sein, is drafting laws based on the proposal, which is targeting the Buddhist-majority country's Muslim minority. At the heart of the movement is an apparent fear that Buddhist women are being forcibly converted to Islam, and that Muslims are growing in number and influence. Inter-communal viol ...

Tuesday, April 08, 2014 Press TV: A UN envoy is urging Myanmar to allow the return of aid groups which were forced to flee sectarian attacks in Rakhine State. The UN's Special Rapporteur on the human rights situation in Myanmar warned that the aid groups' departure could have severe consequences for displaced Muslims. The Muslims have been sheltering in camps to avoid deadly attacks by extremist Buddhists. Tomas Ojea Quintana added that water shortages could reach critical levels within a week in some camps. Some 140-thousand Rohingya Muslims are living in camps as a result of the sectarian conflict since 2012. Another 700 thousand Rohingya Muslims are in dire conditions outside the camps. T he U-N envoy noted that the persecution of Muslims in Myanmar could amount to crimes against humanity.

Burma, a predominantly Buddhist nation of 60 million people, has been grappling with sectarian violence since June 2012. The incident in Du Chee Yar Tan, a village in northern Rakhine State, appears to be the deadliest in a year, and would bring the total number killed nationwide to more than 280, most of them Muslims. Another 250,000 people have fled their homes. Rakhine – home to 80% of the country's 1 million Muslim Rohingya population – runs along the Bay of Bengal and is cut off from the rest of the country by a mountain range. It is off-limits to foreign journalists and humanitarian aid workers have limited access, adding to the difficulties of confirming details about the violence, which flared up more than a week ago. Hundreds of Rohingya people have been killed; tens of thousands were forced from their homes and live as suffering refugees in Internal Displacement Camps (IDP's) where disease is rampant and food and shelter are scarce. "Terrorist" groups are frequently the banter of network news anchors and analysts; yet few in America devote time to the terrorists of Burma who have behaved treacherously toward the Muslim population for a year and a half now, due to old simmering hatreds and a desire among the majority population to live in a Buddhist only country. The Buddhist answer toward their frustration with having to live with Muslims, is most vividly expressed in the "969" movement led by a Buddhist monk named U Wirathu; which propagates false information that in turn damages the fragile existence of Muslims in this country that was locked down under a military junta for so many years. While all Muslims are threatened, the Rohingya Muslim people are at the center of the Buddhist's gun sites. Wirathu is now an ab ...
Rohingya Muslims face state-sponsored violence in Myanmar A political analyst says the violence against the Rohingya Muslim community in Myanmar is “a state-sponsored effort” being made by extremists in the country, Press TV reports. “This is actually a state-sponsored effort by the Buddhist extremists who form both the government and the majority of the population,” Jahangir Mohammed, the director of the Center for Muslim Affairs, told Press TV on Friday. On January 23, Human Rights Watch joined the United Nations in urging Myanmar’s government to launch an investigation into the recent killings of Rohingya Muslims in the western state of Rakhine. The political commentator expressed doubt about an impartial probe by the government into the killings. “So I fail to see how the government itself can investigate these killings impartially. I really need somebody from the outside to investigate it and to make recommendation, but in reality we know that the Buddhists are carrying out these atrociti ...
Obama calls on Myanmar to protect Muslims, ignores slaughter of Christians President Barack Obama meets with Myanmar's President Thein Sein in the Oval Office of the White House in Washington, Monday, May 20, 2013. Thein Sein is the first Myanmar president to be welcomed to the White House in almost 47 years. (AP Photo/Jacquelyn Martin) January 18, 2014 Recent clashes between the Buddhist majority and Muslim minority in the Southeast Asian nation of Myanmar have prompted the Obama Administration to call for investigations amid concerns for the safety for the nation's Muslims, as reported by the Reuters news service on Jan. 17, 2014. Formerly known as Burma, violence has broken out in the Myanmar state of Rakhine between the ethnic Rohingya Muslim minority and Myanmarese Buddhist majority earlier this week, killing between 10 to 60. The Obama Administration issued a statement from their embassy in Rangoon, while also insinuating government troops were complicit in the attacks on the Muslims: The United Sta ...
BRIEFING: Rohingya Asylum Seekers Discovered on Australia’s Christmas Island Twenty-five Rohingya Muslim asylum seekers from Burma were discovered on Thursday hiding out on a beach on Australia’s Christmas Island, after their boat sunk en route on Monday, AFP reports. No one was reportedly killed or injured during their journey from Burma, where minority Rohingya face widespread discrimination. Australian authorities could not confirm the incident, but the immigration minister said there had been “an incident of an unconfirmed nature” on the island, which is an often-sought destination for people smugglers in the region. Under Australia’s hard-line immigration policy, the asylum seekers will likely be transferred to detention centers in Nauru or Papua New Guinea for resettlement.
Bill Clinton: Violence in Myanmar sickens world By ROBIN McDOWELL Associated PressNovember 14, 2013 YANGON, Myanmar — Reports of sectarian violence in Myanmar sicken the world, former U.S. President Bill Clinton said after speaking to political and civic leaders about challenges faced by the emerging democracy following a half-century of military rule. The attacks on Muslims are a topic many in this predominantly Buddhist nation of 60 million try to avoid. Soon after President Thein Sein formed a quasi-civilian government in early 2011 and began making sweeping political and economic changes, deep-seated prejudices started to surface. In the past year, more than 240 people have been killed and 240,000 others forced to flee their homes. Most of the victims have been members of the minority Rohingya Muslim community, hunted down by stick- and machete-weilding Buddhist mobs, often as members of the security forces stood by. And the government — together with much of the population — has been largely si ...
The recent ethnic clashes between the Rohingya Muslims and the Buddhist community in the Rakhine (or Arakan) province of Myanmar have attracted global attention though late – the latest is the UN’s decision to probe into the killings and human rights violation there. An ugly incident of rape and murder of a Buddhist woman allegedly by three Rohingya Muslims in the end of May this year turned into a disaster for Rohingya Muslim community in Myanmar. There are more than 800,000 Rohingyas residing in Burma, mostly in the province of Rakhine. According to several UN reports, Rohingyas are one of the most persecuted minorities in the world. The military Junta striped Rohingyas off all the rights of a citizen through a law called Citizenship Law in 1982, thus making Rohingyas the only stateless community of the world. Who are Rohingyas? The history of Rohingya community in Burma goes back to 8th century as they claim to be original settlers of Rakhine (Arakan) province the country while tracing their ancest ...

MERHROM strongly condemned the Myanmar government on the continuous attack on Muslims in Myanmar which took place over 60 years without the world knowing what we went through inside Arakan State. European lawmakers on Thursday condemned violence suffered by Myanmar's Rohingya Muslim minority and called on the authorities to protect them.
By Sajjad Shaukat: In the modern era, various forms of state terrorism continue by the Israeli armed forces on the Palestinians. While with the backing of Burmese military regime and the covert assistance of Hindus, recent bloodshed of the minority Rohingya Muslim community at the hands of the Rakhine extremist Buddhists in Burma (Myanmar) presents another such example. Similarly, during the Bosnian War (19921995), Serb forces slaughtered more than 10,000 Muslims in Bosnia and Herzegovina and buried them in the unamed mass graves. That genocide was repeated in Kosovo where several men and women were murdered. While, these atrocities are still fresh in the minds of every Muslim, but with the official backing of the government, massacre and harassment of Muslims by the Indian military including paramilitary troops in the Indian-held Kashmir has become a permanent feature. In this regard, instead of granting the people their genuine right of self-determination and holding plebiscite in the controlled territo ...
(REFUGEES/ MIGRANTS) ‘Ethnic cleansing’ in Myanmar: HRW... BANGKOK: Human Rights Watch (HRW), a leading international rights group, on Monday, accused authorities in Myanmar, including Buddhist monks, of fomenting an organised campaign of ethnic cleansing against the country’s Rohingya Muslim minority that killed hundreds of people and forced 125,000 from their homes. While state security forces sometimes intervened to protect fleeing Muslims, more often they fuelled the unrest, the rights group said, either by standing by idle or directly participating in atrocities. The allegations, detailed in a new report, came the same day the European Union (EU) was expected to lift all sanctions on Myanmar, except an arms embargo, to reward it for its progress towards democratic rule. Win Myaing, a government spokesman for Rakhine State, strongly rejected the allegations against state security forces, saying Human Rights Watch (HRW) investigators “don’t understand the situation on the ground”. As chillingly reminiscent of the Third Reich and its Nazism, un-Buddhist, un-factual and ethnocidal as some may sound, these select statements are an accurate reflection of the sub-consciously neo-Nazi world of the ethnically dominant Burmese ruling elite and counter-elite who are forging ahead one grand coalition with their former jailers to turn Burma into 'the last Asian tiger' and build 'discipline flourishing democracy', apparently at the expense of religious and ethnic minorities who make up 40% of the population. Ironically, local Rakhines, generally widely disliked by both the Burmese public and the military, and the Rohingya Muslim, one of the world's 'most vulnerable' peoples, have been pitted against one another by the internally colonial State and Society in Burma, since 1940's.

The Fascist Burmese Regime Presents Birth Control of as its latest Weapon of Ethnic Cleansing of Rakhine's Muslims. Not content with its complicity in the razing of Muslim villages as well as the rape, torture, murder and displacement of over 120,000 Rohingya as part of its systematic campaign of ethnic cleansing in its Western Rakhine State, the fascist Burmese regime has now presented birth control of Rohingya Muslim women as its latest pogrom policy against its Muslim minority. On Monday the 29th of April, a Burmese government-backed commission appointed to investigate the violence in Rakhine published its suggestions of how to address the ethnic problems in the state. The report proposals included instituting a population control policy in Rohingya communities to counter what the commission stated were fears amongst Rakhine's Buddhists about the rapid growth of the Rohingya population. Such a proposal is an assault on Islam's recommendation and high praise for Muslims to bear many children as accordin ...
ENGAGE: Our letter to William Hague concerning Burma: Dear William, We are writing in relation to the decision announced following the meeting of EU Foreign Ministers yesterday on the lifting of all but an arms embargo against Myanmar/Burma. The decision to lift trade, economic and individual sanctions against Burma in order to show European support for its democratic reforms programme is, in our view, poorly timed and morally dubious. The decision has come on the eve of the publication by Human Rights Watch of a report which categorically denounces the Burmese security agencies and politicians for their dereliction of duty in failing to curb the ‘ethnic cleansing’ of Rohingya Muslim communities throughout the country... JAKARTA — Burma's Rohingyas A Muslim minority, they have been denied Burmese citizenship Not allowed to move freely Most live in Rakhine State near the Bangladesh border Thousands of Rohingyas were displaced in 2012 violence Tens of thousands live in camps in Rakhine In 2012, an estimated 13,000 tried to leave Burma on smugglers' boats in the Bay of Bengal, hundreds drowned A boatload of 121 Muslim Rohingya fleeing Burma arrived off the Indonesian coast of Aceh this week. They are just some of thousands of Rohingya fleeing Burma by sea, in a deadly exodus that the United Nations plans to discuss at a conference in Jakarta next month. Human rights groups worry the situation could lead to more sectarian violence. Tensions between Burma’s Rakhine Buddhists and ethnic Rohingyas have festered for decades. Violence erupted last year when communal attacks in Arakan State left hundreds of Rohingya Muslims dead, and 100,000 displaced. Last week, an angry Buddhist mob targeted a non-Rohingya Muslim community in ...
UN: Muslim refugee camps unreachable because of threats and harassment from Buddhist communities = Serious human rights abuses are still being committed in Myanmar despite democratic reforms and progress in resolving conflicts with ethnic groups, according to the United Nations. Tomas Ojea Quintana took the authorities to task at the end of his five-day mission. ‘‘I am concerned about the ongoing practice of arbitrary arrest and torture during interrogation by the military, of Kachin men accused of belonging to the Kachin independence army,” he said during a news conference at Yangon airport. The envoy also said ethnic violence between Muslims and Buddhists in the western Rakhine State threatened to undermine the entire reform process. Medical staff were unable to reach refugees in some Rohingya Muslim camps because of threats and harassment from Buddhist communities, he added. Quintana said 120,000 people were now living in camps, describing one as being “more like a prison”. Although condition ...
OnIslam & Newspapers February 12, 2013 CAIRO – Surviving on handouts and unable to look for work outside refugee camps, Rohingya Muslims are forced by Burmese authorities to take hazardous journeys by sea to flee persecution in their country. “There are no opportunities here for us, no hope,” Abu Kassim, a Rohingya Muslim, told The Washington Post on Tuesday, February 12. “We are prisoners.” Like thousands of fellow Rohingya, Abu Kassim lives in a refugee camp in western Burma after fleeing his home in Rakhine after attacks by Buddhist mobs in June. The 26-year-old Muslim was neither able to return to his home, fearing attacks by Buddhists, nor work outside the camp. This has left him with no other option but to try to cross the Bay of Bengal by sea to look for a better life outside Burma. Estimates show that several thousands of Rohingya Muslims flee Burma on flimsy wooden boats every month. Travelers pay more than $100 for a space on rickety, 40-foot-long boats. The United Nations says of the ...
Burma has acknowledged the persecution of its stateless Rohingya Muslim minority and is considering giving citizenship to thousands of members of the group as a first step to finding a solution to the conflict with local Rakhine Buddhists.
These are the photos evidence from Rohingya genocide which was broken out in Arakan State in June 2012. The photos are saying that the Buddhist homes near to Rohingya homes are labelled as Rakhine home (means Rakhine Buddhist home) in order to get avoid from fire by extremists Buddhist Rakhine and Riot Police while they were setting fire on that village of Rohingya Muslim homes.
The mass genocide against the Muslim minority of Myanmar that began in June 2012 and continues to date by military president, Thein Sein, and opposition leader, Aung Kan Tu Chee (a.k.a. Jabhat al-Nusra of the East), is not the first of its kind in the country.  The minority Muslim population of Myanmar (Burma) known as the Rohingyas have been suffering persecution since decades only because of the choice of their faith.  They have been denied citizenship even though they are the native and indigenous people of that land.   Since years they have been left with no other choice but to flee their ancestral homes in Myanmar to save their lives.  Since the 1990s many took refuge in neighboring Bangladesh as refugees living in camps.  But arriving in refugee camps in Bangladesh doesn't resolve much of their problems except for not fearing to get killed.   The UN refugee agency has been releasing reports from inside Rohingya Muslim camps in Bangladesh, where many have been living for years aft ...

UN Urges Thailand Not to Deport Rohingya Migrants VOA News January 3, 2012 The United Nations refugee agency is urging Thailand not to deport a group of Rohingya Muslim boat people, saying they could be in danger if they are sent back to Burma. UNHCR spokesperson Vivian Tan says that the group, which is allegedly fleeing sectarian violence and persecution in Burma's western Rakhine State, may be subject to punishment upon their return. "We're strongly advocating that they shouldn't be sent back," says Tan. "We're worried they may be punished, because there are rules where if they leave they need to apply for permits, and if they come back without these permits, we don't know what could happen - there might be some punitive measures." Tan says U.N. officials are meeting with Thai authorities Thursday in an attempt to gain access to the group so it can "find out exactly who they are and what they need." Thai officials said Wednesday the group of 73 migrants, including women and children, must be deported by ...

The Economist has a decent summary/analysis of distressing Rakhine Buddhist vs Rohingya Muslim violence in Burma:
Urgent need Where’s Myanmar’s all-powerful military? Is it deaf and blind to the atrocities taking place in Rakhine State against the Rohingyas? What’s President Thein Sein doing about what happening in Rakhine ? Why is the international community not doing more to solace the Rohingyas? Where are the human rights bodies ? Why is there is a studied silence in Washington and is it quiet due to its greed for Myanmar’s natural resources which are vast? These and many other questions are being asked every moment as new stories of atrocities against the Rohingya Muslim and their agony are flashed across the world by the international news media. The latest bit of news is about the manner in which France’s Medecins Sans Frontieres (MSF) is not being allowed to help the affected people. This attitude of responsible ethnic Rakhine leaders is highly deplorable. They must be subjected to harsh punishment by the government and MSF must be allowed to move at high speed to deliver medicines, clear water an ...

Humanitarian aid charity offical stated Rohingya Muslim casualties around a thousand. A fresh influx of Rohingya Muslims from Myanmar's Arakan region were headed to Bangladesh for refuge after a week of ethnic clashes with Rakhine Buddhists. Sait Demir, an official from Turkey-based humanitarian aid charity IHH, told The Anadolu Agency that reports arriving from the conflict area had put Rohingya Muslim casualties at around one thousand, adding that many more were waiting for permission to set foot in Bangladesh, "but the Bangladeshi government won't let them in and many of them are stranded in the boats which carried them and they are hungary. The (Bangladeshi) government has failed to take necessary measures." Turkey's Ambassador to Myanmar Murat Yavuz Ates told the AA on Saturday the number of casualties remained unclear in the clashes from Sunday through Thursday as Myanmar's state-run television had put the death toll at 67 with 95 people were injured and 2,818 houses were burned down. Rohingya News, William Hague No comments Foreign Secretary William Hague calls for peace in Burma's Rakhine State, after the destruction of settlements occupied by Muslim Rohingyas following fierce fighting with Buddhists. In a statement, Mr Hague said: "Our ambassador is in constant contact with the Burmese government. "He spoke to the president’s office earlier today to express our grave concerns about recent developments and our readiness to assist at both a humanitarian and diplomatic level in the search for a sustainable solution to this long running issue." It follows claims of intense fighting in the past week and satellite images from Human Rights Watch that show the widespread destruction of a predominantly Rohingya Muslim part of Kyaukpyu, one of several areas in Rakhine State. This is where battles between Rohingyas and ethnic Rakhine Buddhists threaten to derail the country's fragile democratic transition. Members of the Muslim Rohingya community say that more than 100 Rohingya were killed ...

Saturday, 13 October 2012 Mizzima News Violence throws spotlight on Rohingya Mizzima NewsFriday 12th October, 2012 (Analysis) – The week-long sectarian violence between Buddhists and Muslims in Burma's western Rakhine State has thrown the spotlight on the Rohingya, one of the most oppressed groups in the country, and compels the government to address a burning issue that has been swept under the carpet for decades. Most of the estimated 800,000-strong Rohingya Muslim minority in Burma live in Rakhine, a predominantly Buddhist state bordering Bangladesh where dozens of people have been killed in clashes triggered by the rape and murder last month of a Buddhist girl, allegedly by three Muslims, and the June 3 lynching of 10 Muslims in apparent retaliation. In revenge attacks, Rohingya mobs in the state's capital Sittwe burned the homes and businesses of ethnic Rakhine Buddhists, and the army opened fire and allegedly killed Rohingyas, according to Human Rights Watch. Rohingya Muslim massacre Dr Raja Muhammad Khan 73 There live approximately 800,000 Rohingya Muslims in Myanmar, forming 4% of the Burma’s total population. Contrary to this official data of Myanmar Government, neutral sources claims that, the total Muslim population is more than double the government estimates. It is worth noting that, Burmese Muslims, commonly known as Rohingya Muslims, settled in this part of the world in 7th and 8th century from Arab. Nevertheless, they had the legal status of Burmese minority until 1970s. In 1982, through constitutional amendment, the Military Junta of the country declared them as non-Burmese. Thereafter, Military Junta, started gradual exploitation of this Muslim population to include; denial of their personal and religious freedom and fundamental human rights. Owing to these inhuman acts, thousands of Rohingya Muslims to fled to the neighbouring countries too. After 9/11, the persecution of Rohingya Muslims has increased many folds. Rohingya Muslim refugees hiding in Bangladesh say they were targeted by a Burmese helicopter. AFP Army helicopters sit on the tarmac at the airport in Sittwe, June 12, 2012. A Burmese helicopter set fire to three boats carrying nearly 50 Muslim Rohingyas fleeing sectarian violence in western Burma in an attack that is believed to have killed everyone on board, according to refugees. The three ethnic Rohingyas, whose names have been withheld because they are currently in hiding, said their group put out to sea in six boats heading to Teknaf in the southernmost part of Bangladesh on June 8 at around 4 p.m. They said that they saw the helicopter take off from the area of Sittwe, the capital of western Burma’s Rakhine State, between 30 and 60 minutes after they launched their boats from Burmese soil. One of the three refugees—a young father who made it to Bangladesh after the ordeal—said that the helicopter then circled above three of the boats that had fallen behind for nearly 20 minutes while setting ...
