Opening in 1938, Sick's Stadium, located in Seattle's Rainier Valley, was one of the great minor league ballparks in baseball history. But for one year, it hosted Major League Baseball's Seattle Pilots (who later became the Milwaukee Brewers). Some of baseball's future hall of famers made the trip northwest to Sick's Stadium in 1969! Catfish Hunter, Carl Yastrzemski, Bobby Cox (who played 3B for the Yankees that year), Al Kaline, Harmon Killebrew, Luis Aparicio, Brooks Robinson, Frank Robinson to name a few. Rod Carew led the Twins to a 6-4 victory with a 4-5 performance on April 16, 1969. Reggie Jackson went 3-4 with 2 home runs on April 25, 1969 at Sick's Stadium to lead the visiting A's to a 14-2 trouncing of the Pilots in front of 6,617 fans. Balitmore's Jim Palmer threw a 2 hit shoutout on June 7, 1969 to lead the O's to a 10-0 win. After filing for bankruptcy, the Pilots moved to Milwaukee the following year. It was "Wabasso Rabbit Day" last night, as the Redwood church league playoffs heated up last night. In the first game at Westside, leadoff batter Josey Watkins sparked the offense, while Gold Glove winner Perry Bock vacuumed up throws to first, turned a Derek Jeter-like play at home-and even morphed into Rod Carew at the dish. Like the 1977 Twins, however, Methodist couldn't win a high-scoring battle, as Methodist dropped them into the losers' bracket. Despite Tyler Huhnerkoch's speed on the base paths (and Connor Huhnerkoch's play in right-center), St. Catherine's lost late to St. John's. That perennially strong St. John's team couldn't win twice, though. Shelby Taylor had a multi-hit game, while Sarah Jo Ludwig contributed in the late innings, as the second St. Catherine's team stayed alive to face Methodist next week. I'm not sure how Vesta did. Further church league analysis to follow next week:)
Game # 031 of 162 Truro Tempests – 6 – 6 – 0 1945 Cleveland Buckeyes – 0 – 1 – 0 WP: Greg Maddux (A&C XZZ) LP: Willie Jefferson (A YZ) LP: Bagwell, Sosa (2) (Tempests) Attendance: 22,507 (League Park) Notes: Greg Maddux (A&C XZZ) was almost perfect. "The Professor" gave up a 4th inning single to Avelino Canizares, and faced just 28 hitters from the 1945 Cleveland Buckeyes. The Tempests' offense was a little weak against Willie Jefferson (A YZ) managing only 6 hits, but the boys from Truro made every one of them count, scoring 6 runs. They were led by Sammy Sosa (2001) who hit 2 homers and had 4 RBI's. Rod Carew (1977) led off the game with a double, and has now hit safely in 26 consecutive games, and in 30 out of 31 games. The Tempests are now 29-2, and have won 22 games in a row.
I'll give credit to Jeter. No one in the history of the game, has come in as an average shortstop, solidified themselves as slightly above average and then descended to mediocrity and to being below average as quickly as he has and yet have had 3,000 hits. Yay, to having amazing like-ability, in the world's biggest market and on the world's most internationally recognizable sports brand. If New York loves you, you can stay as long as you'd like, even 5 or 6 years too long, to achieve numbers only true Hall of Famers earn in far lesser desirable circumstances, i.e. Rod Carew, Paul Molitor, Robin Yount, Dave Winfield, George Brett, Craig Biggio... All better players on very small market teams that would have been cut long before achieving such success due to popularity and marketing. TRUTH HURTS.

Chris Furrey. in honor of Tony Gwynn the ultimate NO strikeout hitter. Victor going in to today has 17HR and 17 strikeouts. RIP Tony Gwynn one of my three favorite non Tiger hitters of all time along with Kirby Puckett and Rod Carew.
Considering Baseball... Tony Gwynn passed today. He was an awesome hitter and great ambassador of the game. When I think of Gwynn I automatically think of Rod Carew and Joe Morgan. They always seemed to be ambassadors of the game. They studied the game and continually worked on it. Baseball never made as much of his greatness as it made of Pete Rose's weakness. When baseball has a positive role model while also being a great baseball player, they just wink at them as they pass through. Thank you, Tony Gwynn for being great and being a gentleman. You always made me smile...
Tony Gwynn's passing is truly sad to me. I loved watching him play baseball. He has to be one of the top 5 hitters I have seen play baseball. Here are my top 5, what are yours? Pete Rose, Wade Boggs, Tony Gwynn, Rod Carew, Paul Molitor (the last one is up for debate. Lots I could pick from, but thought Molitor would be left out of a lot of people's lists). NOTE: Ted Williams easily is in the top 5 based upon his numbers, but I never saw him play
He hit like Rod Carew, laughed and smiled like Kirby Puckett and was as genuinely nice as Harmon Killebrew. Rest in peace…

Folks today in history is one that many of us should not forget...if only because what happened paved the way for many, many other things that we now see as everyday and are better for it. For those who do not know...on April 15, 1947...Jackie Robinson took the field with the Brooklyn Dodgers (Ebbets Field) and in the process broke the color line in the majors. The list of those who came after read like a how's who of history: Roy Campanella, Willie Mays, Hank Aaron, Frank Robinson, Willie McCovey, Curt Flood, Bob Gibson, Bobby Tolin, Joe Morgan, Rod Carew, Al Downing, Kirby Puckett, Jim Rice, Cleon Jones, Tommie Agee.et al. In fact, the Pittsburgh Pirates for quite some time had all starting positions, for many games with an all-black lineup [as Danny Murtaugh, the manager of the Bucs at the time said 'I did not see race, I just saw they had Pirates uniforms on'] . Many out there take for granted the visibility that does exist in sports, entertainment etc. Human nature being what it is, this will happen ...

How times have changed. Imagine a game played by Willie Mays, Hank Aaron, Roberto Clemente, Willie Stargell, Joe Torre, Willie McCovey, Johnny Bench, Rod Carew, Brooks Robinson, Tom Seaver, Lou Brock, Bobby Bonds, Bobby Mercer, Carl Yastrzemski, Frank Robinson, Norm Cash, Vida Blue, Jim Palmer, Andy Messersmith, Wilbur Wood, Al Kaline, Amos Otis, Harmon Killebrew, Thurman Munson, Reggie Jackson, Frank Howard, and coached by Billy Martin and Sparky Anderson. All heroes to a generation, and virtually all first-round members of the Hall of Fame. Forty years from now, how many names will you remember from the 2013 MLB All-Star Game? Probably not many.

Remembering the Metrodome today, saw my first MLB game there in 1982 Twins and Angels saw Reggie Jackson, Fred Lynn and Rod Carew. My first NFL game 1982 Vikings and Saints, Tequila Tommy Kramer and Bobby Herbert. Stood behind home plate next to Bob Costas and interviewed Gary Giaetti during the ALCS in 1987. Was on the field when the Twins returned from Atlanta with the World Series trophy, interviews with Kirby Puckett and Kent Hrbeck. Watched Barry Sanders tear up the Vikings in the 90's. Reminds me of just how old I am. So long HHH Metrodome.
Cano's got as pure as a swing as Rod Carew did & as nice as a glove as any other 2B. Plenty of great years ahead of him. Money well earned.
Wilbur Wood pitching and Terry Forester coming in to relieve , I believe it was against Kansas City or the Twinkies . Loved watching Bill Melton , Carlos May and Pat Kelly play . I did not like George Brett , but enjoyed Rod Carew when we played against them .
Who Said That? "Inspiration exists, but it has to find us working." Who’s your pick? a) Pablo Picasso b) Rod Carew c) Lee Iacocca Come back tomorrow for the answer!

Hi gang. Boston is on the edge of the World Series after their win last night. Detroit is losing its grip on reality. Dodgers look to hang on tonight against the beer guzzlers. They are down 3-2. Before were get to some history I must give the answer to the yesterday's question. As you may recall, I told everyone that Robin Yount was one of six players to have played in 1000+ games at two different positions with 4 being Hall Of Famers (Yount was a HOF.) Okay, he goes. The four Hall Of Fame members are: Yount-SS/CF; Rod Carew-2B/1B; Ernie Banks-SS/1B; Stan "The Man" Musial-1B/OF; the non-members are ex-Dodger Ron Fairly- 1B/RF and A-Rod-SS/3B. How did you do? Ron Fairly was the toughest to get. 1. On October 18, 1913, the Baseball World Tour officially began. The Chicago White Sox and the N.Y. Just a suggestion for the off season for Dan Uggla and BJ Upton think old school. Dan, think Pete Rose batting stance and style. And BJ, think Rod Carew's batting style. There are loads of examples in today's league but these guys were tried and true. You don't even have to look off out of the Braves line up if you'd like, Freddie Freeman, Chris Johnson and even Jason Heyward are good examples.
Who knew you could find a throw back Rod Carew Twins jersey in Utah. Thanks
ha. I used to model my batting stance after Cooper, though everyone always asked me why I was trying to look like Rod Carew
Rod Carew had been retired for nine years when Ill Communication dropped.

The 26 year-old Tiger first baseman finishes the season with 183 RBIs, just one shy of Lou Gehrig's 1931 American League record. 1937 Johnny Allen's bid for a perfect season is spoiled when Hank Greenberg drives in the only run of the game in the first inning and Jake Wade throws a one-hitter against the Indians in the 1-0 loss to Detroit on the last day of the season at Navin Field. The 32 year-old right-hander from North Carolina will finish the season 15-1, with his .938 won-loss percentage the best in the major leagues. 1951 In Game 3 of National League play-off series at the Polo Grounds, Bobby Thomson's shot heard around ...

Hall-of-Famer Rod Carew turns 68 today. This is such a weird picture. I associate the pre-renovation old Yankee Stadium with black-and-white and "before my time," and powder-blue road uniforms, pullover shirts and elastic waistbands as being well within my time -- sadly.
